O

ne of the highlights of my summer each year is the opportunity to visit several of the Jewish summer camps where Har Shalom kids are campers and counselors.

I am constantly amazed by the incredible work summer camps do, in a preciously limited amount of time, to create joyful, positive, content-rich Jewish communities at camp. I witnessed kids singing Hebrew songs, performing Israeli dances, referring to activities and places around camp by their Hebrew names, learning about Israel and Jewish life from college-age role models from Israel, the United States, and other countries, and joining in boisterous renditions of Birkat Ha’Mazon (Grace After Meals) and other traditional Jewish prayers. It’s no wonder that the communal surveys tell us again and again that Jewish summer camp is one of the fundamental experiences that lead to affiliation and leadership in Jewish adulthood. I grew up at the day and overnight camps at the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland.

I was a camper, a counselor, a unit head, a pool director, and my last summer, I served as assistant director of the day camp. To say that these many summers helped shape my own Jewish identity and helped hone my leadership skills would be a profound understatement. In my recent summer camp circuit-riding, I can attest to the fact that no matter the specific

Since moving to the Washington area four years ago, I have been introduced to a camp that I had never before visited, but that has turned me into an enthusiastic fan. The past few years I have had the opportunity to spend time at Camp Ramah in Palmer, Massachusetts. Camp Ramah New England was the second camp to be established in a network of 8 overnight camps and 5 day camps (including one near Germantown, Maryland!) that are part of the Ramah network founded in the 1940’s by my alma mater, the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Educational visionaries at the Seminary understood the deep impact of a rich Jewish community combined with the natural appeal of the camp environment for inculcating life-long Jewish values and knowledge. Indeed a study of former Ramah campers revealed that they are three times more likely to date other Jews, four times more likely to attend synagogue services, and three times more likely to spend significant time in Israel. Today Ramah comprises over 6,500 campers, 1,500 counselors and specialty staff. Kids ages 7-16 from our region of the country are zoned for the camp in Palmer, which I can tell you based on first-hand experience is a jewel of site, nestled around a pristine lake, and ringed by the lush green mountains of western Massachusetts. As I stood on the pier watching kids boat in kayaks, sailboats, paddle boats, and canoes, the boating director turned to me and said, “What I love about Ramah is that this is exactly what Conservative Judaism is supposed to be.”

elichot, prayers of forgiveness, are first mentioned in the Mishnah. They originated as prayers for fast days. We begin saying them on the Saturday night prior to Rosh Hashanah, and continue saying them every morning until Hazzan Rosh Hashanah, for at Henrique Ozur Bass least 4 days. Sephardic communities begin reciting Selichot from Rosh Hodesh Elul to evoke the 40-day period Moshe spent up on Har Sinai.

Cleanses but does not cleanse completely, recalling the iniquity of parents upon children and grandchildren, to the third and fourth generations”.

A midrash retold by Ronald Eisenberg in the “JPS Guide to Jewish Traditions” explains why these verses are used in connection with forgiveness: after the incident of the Golden calf, God threatened to destroy the people of Israel rather than forgive them. According to the Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 17b), Moses felt that Israel’s sin was too serious and he could not speak on their behalf. God appeared to Moses and taught him the Thirteen Attributes, saying: “Whenever Israel sins, let them recite this in its proper order and I will forgive them.”

There is a beautiful reading in our Mahzor Lev Shalem, on page 336 which explains how we derive 13 attributes from the two verses in Exodus. This passage is based in the opinion of Rabenu Tam (a grandson of Rashi). The repetition of the name of God, for instance, is counted as two attributes: the first time because God forgives even before a person sins; the second, because God forgives after a person sins.

According to Rabbi Reuven Hammer (“Entering the High Holidays”) originally, Selichot prayers were recited early in the morning, prior to dawn. The minhag in Eastern Europe was for the Shaliach Tsibbur to go around the village, knocking on each door and inviting people to recite Selichot. Later on, the practice developed to hold the first Selichot service at a time more convenient for more people. We now recite Selichot around midnight on Saturday.

an you believe the summer is over? For some this is a time of joy — the kids are going back to school, we can get back into a routine, fall will be here soon and the leaves will begin to change. However for me, the summer being over is a reminder that the High Holy Executive Director Days are around the corner.

It’s a beautiful city with a warm desert climate.

Perhaps most surprising is that Tashkent is surrounded by the beautiful snowcapped Western Tian Accounts Receivable Shan mountain range.

Irina Laskin The mountains were like a second home to me growing up. As a child, I spent holidays there with family, but as I got older I started going with friends. I loved hiking, climbing, and kayaking in the summers, surrounded by cold rushing mountain rivers, glaciers, and delicious wild berries. In winters, kayaking became skiing, and rushing currents were replaced by mountain slopes. I grew up in Tashkent, even graduating from Tashkent Technical University, and lived in that city for most of my life.

Shabbat dinners will continue to be held throughout the year. The first dinner of the 5776 programming year will be held on October 9, with the kick-off of Back to the Shul Weekend. We have many great programs scheduled for the coming year. Make sure to check out all of our programs for the coming year in our guide, which you will receive at the High Holy Days.

Please don’t assume that we know what is going on in the lives of all of you; we need to be told. If you have good news to share, or an illness to report, please call us and let us know. We are your extended family and want to be there to support and help you anyway we can. That is what family is for, to share with you in the good times and the bad.

I have a girlfriend who sees the world through rose colored glasses. She is the type of person who always finds the good in every situation, she is the one who always says there is meaning in everything that happens, it might not seem it at first, but there is good somewhere buried deep in whatever is going on. As Executive Director I have learned that she might be right, as we enter a new year we should all try and live like her and we will feel so much better about everything as we go on from day to day.

Lastly, from my family, Todd, Jayme, Justin, Randi, Ricky, Landon and myself; we would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Sweet New Year.

However when the USSR fell apart and Uzbekistan became a newly independent country, everyone we knew started emigrating all around the world. We were lucky and in 2000 we won the green card lottery and were able to move to the United States, just me, my husband and our four year old son. Without knowing English or having any relatives here, we started to explore what our new life here had to offer. It was scary, to say the least, but America welcomed us with open arms. All along our journey here, we have met countless people who helped us adapt to make this new place feel like home.

I took English classes and attended an English conversation club at the library, and our teachers there were some of the most incredible, open, and friendly people who not only taught us the language, but helped us get acclimated to life here, helping us look for and apply to jobs. Through them I met some people at the JCC and worked there. I started working at Har Shalom in 2005 for accounts payable. I was one of the “good guys”: paying bills, credit cards, and even refunding money to congregants and staff. Now I have the opposite role, every month I send bills to congregants, and collect money for the synagogue. I’m glad to be working here, with amazing co-workers, and wonderful congregants, in such a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

When I’m not busy collecting money, I’m spending time with my Spotlight | Continued on Page 8

I was a reserve soldier and we received a donation from you for pizzas i would like to personally thank you, the pizza was a very happy moment for some of us who were away from our homes and on duty to defend the country, little gestures like these and the backing makes going to reserve duty just a little more comforting, this year we were stationed in the Jordan valley and that pizza at the night of a 39° day (102°F!) with the drink that came with it was a wonderful well appreciated gesture.

ast Spring, our Religious School students voted to spend some of their tzedakah money to send pizza and soda to a platoon of Israeli IDF soldiers. The pizza ended up going to a tank unit. Quite unexpectedly, I received the note above in response from one of the soldiers:

organizations which they shared with the school. Finally, all the students had a chance to vote for their favorite organization.

It is wonderful to see the personal way that tzedakah money can make an impact. Earlier in the summer, we received a whole packet of information from the Israeli Guide Dog Institute, where the students also voted to send their money.

I want to commend our students on donating $1157.24 to tzedakah last year. To decide where to send the money, I presented the 7th grade with about a dozen possible choices.

They researched the choices and choose their favorite 5 organizations. Then, they created Power Points about these

Introducing Ari Jacobson

A

ri Jacobson’s experience as a songleader includes 4 years as a counselor songleader at Eisner Camp in Gt. Barrington, MA, music Music Teacher Ari Jacobson specialist at Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill, MA and Temple Israel in Manhattan, as well as too many holidays, services, song sessions and youth group events to count. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Ari studied music and theatre at UMass Amherst before heading to New York City to pursue a career in the arts. Since then, Ari has taught music in both Jewish and secular contexts to children from 3 months to high school, toured with the American Shakespeare Center, performed off-Broadway with the National Yiddish Theatre (Folksbiene), played guitar on various cruise ships, and performed his original music in venues around the country. He is very excited to be making Washington, DC his new home base, and honored to become part of the Har Shalom community.

The Maturation of Israeli Cinema from the 1960s to 2000s with Ira Weiss Tuesdays from 8 to 10 pm Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24 This will be a six week series of Tuesday evening classes from 8 PM to 10 PM. Each week a feature length Israeli film will be screened in its entirety, followed by a class discussion. For all films made after 1990, each will have been awarded the Ophir (Israeli Oscar) for Best Film of the Year. Discussions will concentrate on how the story lines, writing style, and production quality evolve over time and the factors that influenced those changes.

Weekly Jewish Text Classes Shabbat Torah Study with Lay-leaders At approximately 12:40 pm on Shabbat Join this popular, long-standing Torah discussion group, each Shabbat at approximately 12:40 pm. No Hebrew knowledge or previous Torah study necessary; just an interest in looking at Torah text and discussing it with other members of the Har Shalom community.

Minha-Torah Study-Ma’ariv Study Group On Shabbat, time is 15 minutes before candle-lighting time the day before (rounded to the nearest 5 min) Since 1990, Har Shalom congregants have celebrated the end of Shabbat with a lay-led Minha-Torah Study, Ma’ariv Study Group.

This 90-minute service includes 30 to 40 minutes of learning on the weekly Torah portion or the prayers and their meaning.

Dr. Stan Siegel, Dr. Fred Steinberg and other congregants and clergy members have led the teaching and discussion. Come discover this gem of learning at Har Shalom - twenty-five years in the making.

Mishna Study with Rabbi Raskin & Hazzan Ozur Bass Wednesdays at 10:30 am, beginning Oct. 14 through Apr. 13 This year we will be learning Masechet Pesachim, the tractate concerned with Pesach. Come study the basis of Passover rituals and laws. Newcomers are always welcome. Join your clergy in exploring the wonders of Mishna.

Talmud Study with Rabbi Cahan Mondays at 8 pm, Oct. 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Explore the Talmud and its lessons with Rabbi Cahan. This perennial favorite has been around for over a decade. Mysticism & Kabbalah: Secret Knowledge in Judaism at Har Shalom: Thursdays at 9:30 am on Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, Dec. 3, 10, 17, Jan. 7, 14 Thanks to Madonna and other contemporary celebrities, Kabbalah today is one of the best known facets of Judaism, yet also one of the least well understood. As a result, despite the public chatter about Kabbalah, for many, this important aspect of the Jewish tradition remains a “closed book.” This new Melton Scholars course enables participants to gain familiarity with the rich history of Jewish mysticism, and an understanding of many of the texts that have been so central to that tradition. Presented chronologically, the course provides an opportunity for discussing the progression of Jewish mystical tradition over hundreds of years. Discussions surrounding the texts will relate to enduring Jewish challenges, issues of pressing relevance for Jewish life both past and present. The course will expose participants to some of the ways that the particular lens of the mystical and esoteric has been employed throughout Jewish history to discover the relevant, deeper meanings of Judaism, as students consider the extent to which Jewish mystical teachings speak to the deepest mysteries of human existence, offering rich, meaningful explanations for so many of life’s eternal universal questions.

rabbis and professional Jewish educators are part of the core staff; where Hebrew, tefillah, Israel, and Jewish values are learned and lived. Of all the various camping movements in this country, Camp Ramah brings more Israeli staff to interact with campers each summer than any other. This is all accomplished in exquisite natural surroundings, in the most creative ways, and with so much fun and enthusiasm. A handful of Har Shalom families are currently Ramah campers, and I would love to see that number grow exponentially. One way to get to know Ramah for younger kids is to enroll in the Ramah Day Camp, which opened this summer with 105 kids on a beautiful camp site just about 20 miles to the north of us. Get a load of this deal: If we have 8-10 day campers from Har Shalom, Ramah will send a bus to our parking lot to pick them up and drop them off! Younger kids can get a taste of the Ramah experience there, and then “graduate” to the overnight camp, which has 2, 4, and 8 week options depending on age and grade.

One final image. On the evening before I left camp to come home I got to see a performance that the oldest eidah (unit) had been working on. It was a Broadway musical review featuring hit songs from several famous shows, except in this performance the songs were all presented in Hebrew! Even more remarkable though was the fact that these teenagers did the show alongside campers from the Tikvah program, a unique opportunity at Ramah New England for campers with special needs to experience Jewish summer camp. Side by side they sang, danced, and energetically interpreted songs from Grease, The Lion King, Annie, and other shows. I watched the subtle interactions; how the Tikvah campers were encouraged and supported; how it didn’t matter if every move was executed perfectly or every note hit correctly. What mattered was the genuine loving-kindness that graced the stage that night and made the show so beautiful to watch. Yet another Jewish value inculcated at this exceptional camp.

My name is David Helfand and I am the new Director of Youth Engagement! I am thrilled to be joining the staff and family at Har Shalom and I look forward to spending time with each and every one of Director of you. Just a quick word about Youth Engagement me. I was born and raised in David Helfand Kansas City where I was active in USY and within my Jewish Community. After a year in Israel, I graduated from the American Jewish University in Los Angeles and just completed another year in Israel. As I start working here at Har Shalom, I look forward to being apart of a warm and welcoming community. I look forward to seeing you all during my favorite time of year, The High Holidays!

family. I’m lucky to have my mom living with us, my son Mike (20) is studying Finance at the University of Pittsburgh, and my sister’s family now lives in this area. I love to travel and I am taken aback by all of the incredible National Parks I have visited: Mount Rainier, Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce Canyon, each more breathtaking than the last. My life has been quite an adventure and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

e are excited to start the year here at the ECEC!

In addition to our usual September of adjusting to school and learning about the High Holy Days, this year all the students will also be ECC Director studying Israeli artists. We Brenda Footer will be learning about and be inspired by these artists in conjunction with the Israeli Art Show sponsored by the Ways and Means Committee. Teachers will begin by exposing the children to a variety of artists. Children will have the chance to explore different techniques such as Agam’s paper folding and Chagal’s famous stained glass windows. Our exploration of Israel’s artists will culminate with a reception on November 1st where parents and friends can view their children’s art as well as that of the Israeli artists in the Art Sale (and of course have a nosh!) We look forward to collaborating with the Ways and Means Committee on this exciting event and thank them for including the ECEC children.

Membership Activities Town Hall Meeting Monday, October 19, at 8:00 pm The Har Shalom New Member, Membership Outreach and Programming committees would like to hear from you! We are seeking input from our members about activities or programs that you would like to see at Har Shalom in the next few years.

Adult Kids Club: Dinner Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 6:30 pm

The Adult Kids Club is part of the Men’s Club. This segment of the Men’s Club focuses on activities for members who think that they are chronologically, if not psychologically, old enough to have adult children. In other words, for guys who are approximately 50 years old and older. One of our upcoming activities is going to dinner on Thursday, September 17th at 6:30 pm at a restaurant to be determined. Daytimers Forum: Seth Kibel Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at noon

Our 2015-2016 season is opening with a bang! Seth Kibel will be joining us on September 9, 2015 to discuss “George Gershwin and the Rhapsody in Blue” and play his clarinet (and probably other instruments). As you know from his previous visits, Seth combines great playing with fascinating information to create a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

As the founder and director of the Alexandria Kleztet and his involvement with other groups, Seth is well known as a fine musician and musicologist in the Baltimore-Washington area.

He has received many honors and has published many albums, both with the Kleztet and others. He was recently featured in a full-page article in the Washington Jewish Week.

Please join us at this opening program. As usual, we will have beverages and dessert to accompany your brown-bag lunch, beginning at noon. The program will begin at about 12:30 pm.

Adult Kids Club: Golf Outing Thursday, October 23, 2015 at 6:30 pm

We usually have a dinner outing each month on the 3rd Thursday. An exception to that is next month. In October, there will be a golf outing on Friday, October 23rd in lieu of a dinner event. The golf outing is open to all members of the Men’s Club and to potential members of the Men’s Club. If interested let us know at the above email address. All skill levels are welcome.

If you have an idea for another activity, let us know. We want to hear from you.

We are currently planning our programs for the rest of the fall. On October 14, we will have a representative from AIPAC. The specific speaker will be announced later.

Theater J : Queens Girl in the World Wednesday, October 7, at noon

The first play of the season will be “QUEENS GIRL IN THE WORLD”, a world premiere by Caleen Sinnette Jennings and directed by Eleanor Holdridge. Theater J will be offering a noon performance on Wednesday, October 7, 2015. Jacqueline’s parents abruptly transfer her to a progressive, predominantly Jewish school in Greenwich Village. She is thrust out of her comfort zone and is one of only four black students in this new school. Jacqueline discovers a new city and a whole new world.

Tickets will be $15.00 each.

Deadline for payment must be Friday, September 11.

Thanks to Madonna and other contemporary celebrities, Kabbalah today is one of the best known facets of Judaism, yet also one of the least well understood. As a result, despite the public chatter about Kabbalah, for many, this important aspect of the Jewish tradition remains a "closed book."

This new Melton Scholars course enables participants to gain familiarity with the rich history of Jewish mysticism, and understanding of many of the texts that have been so central to that tradition.

Presented chronologically, the course provides an opportunity for discussing the progression of Jewish mystical tradition over hundreds of years. Discussions surrounding the texts will relate to enduring Jewish challenges, issues of pressing relevance for Jewish life both past and present.

The course will expose participants to some of the ways that the particular lens of the mystical and esoteric has been employed throughout Jewish history to discover the relevant, deeper meanings of Judaism, as students consider the extent to which Jewish mystical teachings speak to the deepest mysteries of human existence, offering rich, meaningful explanations for so many of life's eternal universal questions.
