hen I was in 5th grade, I had a young, charismatic, African American male teacher who used to play vinyl records of Dr. Martin Luther King’ speeches to us on the classroom record player. We would sit silently listening to this rousing, stirring voice booming from the phonograph.

Since then, I have always had a fascination with Martin Luther King, not only as a great prophet of civil rights, but also as a remarkable leader and a visionary. I want you to think about this... on that hot summer day of August 28, 1963 a quarter of a million people converged around the Lincoln Memorial. Do you know how many invitations were sent in the mail in advance of that demonstration? The answer is ZERO. I guarantee that there were no email reminders, no Paperless Posts, no Evites, no Punchbowl; there were no Facebook pages, no Tweets, no Websites listing details of the gathering. And yet, 250,000 people knew exactly where to go, and when to be there. We can’t even do Yizkor without a gaggle of people calling Leslie and asking so what time exactly does Yizkor start? What time should I be there if I don’t want to miss it? The author Simon Sinek says that Dr. King pulled off this miracle-event precisely because he did not talk about the details. He didn’t dwell on minutia. He didn’t preach about 5-point plans to fix inequality or 10-point plans to

combat bigotry... no, Dr. King spoke the language of faith. Of hope. Of belief. Dr. King got people there that day “because he had a dream, not a plan.” (Simon Sinek, How Great Leaders Inspire Action, TEDexPuget Sound, September 2009) So I ask you tonight... What is our dream for the next 50 years of our congregation? What do we want to be as a faith community. Let’s set aside boards and budgets and by-laws. I don’t want to talk about committees or constitutions. You see that’s all important for any functional organization, but it’s not what brings people in the door. It’s not what inspires people to make Har Shalom their spiritual home; to locate their most significant moments of life in this community; to seek God and Torah and meaning in life by being a part of this particular congregation. In our first 50 years, Har Shalom experienced rapid growth... we were in the epicenter of the new frontier of Jewish migration.

Neighborhoods and developments were literally built up around us. People sought us out... our membership lists were long, our schools were full. I’m even told that back in the day, our preschool had an enviable waiting list. But folks, the dynamics and demographics of Jewish life and affiliation have changed monumentally since then.

Last year’s White House proclamation declaring June to be LGBT Pride Month began with the following:

human being must be treated in the same way we would treat a God-like person. We must question and challenge stereotypes that diminish and belittle our fellow humans. We must open our doors and our arms and embrace every human being.

“As progress spreads from State to State, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated Hazzan with dignity and respect Henrique Ozur Bass -- our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, we celebrate victories that have affirmed freedom and fairness, and we recommit ourselves to completing the work that remains.”

Judaism has also seen rapid change working towards inclusiveness in our communities. Back in 1992 the Seminary was still struggling with the idea of “normative” behavior. At that point, the Rabbinical Assembly, after heated debate, closed its doors for gays and lesbians. However, in 2006 the Rabbinical Assembly began to accept the ordination of gay and lesbian rabbis, and in 2011, they issued a resolution to “support the extension of civil rights and privileges granted to married persons to same sex couples”. Finally, in 2012 the Committee on Jewish Laws and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly approved several ceremonies to be used in lifecycle rituals for same-sex couples. Communities within the movement are opening their doors and welcoming arms to LGBTQ individuals and families, and advocating for more inclusion within the Jewish community as a whole.

Even as the Supreme Court of the United States considers the ban on same-sex marriages in four states, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, what impresses me is how quickly opinions on this issue have changed in the country. An article

by NPR News states: “In 1996, public opinion polls showed, on average, only 27 percent of the public favored legalization; this year, although many states still adamantly resist gay marriage, public opinion polls put the approval number nationally at well over 50 percent.” (April 27, 2015)

Here at Har Shalom we are now working with an organization called Keshet to learn how we can become better allies and advocates for the LGBTQ within our community. Keshet is a national grassroots organization “working for the full equality and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Jews in Jewish life.” Because of this association you will see a poster called “Seven Jewish Values: Guidelines for Inclusive Jewish Communities” displayed in many of our offices. Our offices are also being decorated with “Safe Zone” stickers, indicating

s I sit on the plane on my way to New Orleans for a much needed vacation, I think about the summer ahead and what we at Har Shalom have planned for the upcoming year. We are about to have our annual calendar meeting to lay out the plans for what promises to be a fun filled program year. We had our annual High Holy Day Meeting to set the schedule and start working on the High Holy Days. I know you are thinking - “it’s not even officially summer yet and you are worried about the holidays, the kids are still in school, we haven’t started summer camp or family vacations yet!”

By now you should have received your packet of information for the holidays. If you haven’t, you will very shortly. Please make sure you fill it out and get it back to the office by July 15th. We need to make sure that we have everything we need in time to make your Holy Days as spiritual as possible.

This year at our congregational meeting, like we do annually, we held the election of our new officers and Board of Directors.

What a great group of leaders we have taking over the reigns at Har Shalom! I am looking forward to working with them. We do however; have some that will not be returning. I thank you all for the time you have given to Har Shalom; and have truly enjoyed working with each of you and getting to know you. I must however say a special thank you our outgoing president, Cindy Fishman, who I have had the honor of working with and is not returning to our Executive Committee - Cindy has become more than just someone who I am working with at Congregation Har Shalom, she has become my friend, and I will truly miss working directly with her. Kol HaKavod, Cindy!

F

or the handful of congregants whom I haven’t met yet, my name is Robert – I came with the building. I ‘m a very big asset, or so I like to think.

I have been at Har Shalom for more than 30 Custodian years as a maintenance Robert Christian staffer, and I’m a favorite with Har Shalomers from two-year olds in the ECEC to seniors who attend the Daytimers luncheons. In my tenth year as of dedicated service to Har Shalom, I was honored during one of our luncheons. That alone is a sign of how long it took me to get up to speed on things.

When I started here, I considered myself a “country lad” born in Warrenton, Virginia. I recall my first bus ride from my residence downtown in the District seemed to take forever.

This worked to my pleasant surprise when I discovered that Har Shalom was a hidden gem in the countryside, in an area that look like my hometown. Well, much has changed since then.

When I first started, I took the job offer with the intent of staying no more than six years, but before I knew it thirty years had gone by. Boy, they do say time flies when you’re having fun!

I would spend my nights at Har Shalom, working the grave yard shift as a “night man”. If you’ve ever spent time around me, you’ll know I like to stories. One of my classics is that of my first weekend here. I stayed over on a Friday night in order to prepare for Shabbat morning services, one of our Sisterhood members had made a promise to bring me breakfast. I woke up the next morning and made sure to work up a healthy appetite.

By the time she arrived I was hungry and boy was I ready. I expected a big country breakfast, oozing with syrup and butter, and the marvelous delicacies of the countryside. Dismayed is not even the word to express how I felt when she handed me a bagel, cream cheese and a cup of coffee. I’m glad to say since then, I have grown to love bagel and cream cheese, especially whitefish.

The people are what makes Har Shalom so special. Just like I felt back then, I still feel today: everyone really is like one big family. This is my home away from home.

s the school year draws to a close, it’s a good time for reflection, as well as celebration. On June 10, our four-year-old class, the Lions, will celebrate all their accomplishments with a siyyum. Clergy and teachers, parents and grandparents, ECC Director aunts and uncles and Brenda Footer friends, will come to witness and celebrate with them.

Just what have these fouryear-olds accomplished in their years here at the ECEC?

brachot for meals and Shabbat. They view the Rabbis and Hazzan as friends and teachers. Each child delights in the specialness of Shabbat. Objects and symbols associated with each holiday are meaningful to them. By the time children leave the ECEC, they have learned many Torah stories and can identify with Jewish heroes. They know that prayer is a way of talking to God. We encourage all kinds of mitzvot and tikkun olam.

Most importantly, we know that our four-year-olds are curious, excited learners who love school. Please join us wish the children and their families a hearty mazal tov on reaching this milestone in their lives!

They’ve learned so much more than just colors, shapes, numbers and letters (although they’ve learned those too). They are prepared to enter school with the motor skills and ability to self-regulate that are the pre-requisites for formal schooling.

The Lions have developed a sense of themselves as separate from their parents and caregivers, capable of saying goodbye and returning once again. They have become secure in the knowledge that those who love them will always return.

They have learned to explore the big world around them, to follow routines, to share space (and sometimes toys) with other children. They’ve learned to label their own feelings and to feel empathy for their peers. The children have formed lasting friendships and so have the families.

They’ve learned to negotiate conflicts with their peers, and work together on a task. In the ECEC, we believe conflict can be a positive. It allows children to gain understanding of another’s point of view, and can sometimes even change minds! The skill of working in a group carries right through school and into the work place. The Lions have learned to be group leaders and hard-working partners.

We encourage children to solve problems and look for answers to their own hypotheses. By the time they turn four, children in the ECEC show curiosity about cause and effect, notice similarities and differences, and make predictions about what will happen next. They can find alternate solutions to problems and apply new information and vocabulary to an activity or interaction.

Children who participate in the ECEC also develop a strong sense of their Jewish identity. They can recite appropriate

From the Rabbi | Continued often frightens people away who think they’re not observant enough to be here. The Jewish community is spread far and wide, and there are more synagogues in Montgomery County than in the whole state of Texas!

better human beings because of the people they met here, or something they learned here, or some inexplicable truth that they felt in this place. That is the key to a renaissance at Har Shalom for the next 50 years.

Just this morning I was meeting with an adorable couple about a baby naming for their daughter. The mother grew up here at Har Shalom, became a bat mitzvah here, moved away for several years to New York City, and just moved back to Potomac with her young family. Her husband, who is from New Jersey, said to me: “With all these synagogues around here, how would someone know to join Har Shalom? What’s your pitch?”

I told them about the friendly clergy, the great programs, the wonderful families here, how child-friendly and approachable we are. But ultimately I said, the pitch cannot be conveyed in words. The pitch can only be communicated by feeling. You have to come. You have to experience first-hand what this community is all about. Then you’ll know what Har Shalom’s niche truly is... then you’ll understand why we exist, and what we truly have to offer.

When we return the Torah to the ark, we sing that beautiful song Etz Chayim Hi... that song concludes with the words “Chadeish yameinu ke’kedem,” which means, “renew our days as of old.” Now some people take that to mean, “God, can you please just make it like the good old days again?” Our shul certainly has many good old days to recall: Wonderful leaders, cutting edge programs, a proud legacy. But the word kedem doesn’t only mean the good old days. Kedem is also a word that means the very beginning of time, Gan Eden, when everything was new, everything was fresh, everything was possible. And so tonight, as I say those words chadeish yameinu ke’kedem, I pay homage to our glorious past, but also invite all of you to embrace this exciting moment in the life of our shul, when all things should be possible...

Friends, I am convinced that people are seeking deep human connection; people are seeking profound Jewish meaning; people are looking for depth in what we teach and in their relationships with others; people want to find a connection with God, or at least with something greater than themselves in the universe. People want to be associated with other Jews who are on a journey... who take their Judaism seriously. Who are growing and learning and devoting themselves to our sacred traditions. That’s what we have to stand for. That’s what we have to communicate in word and in deed. We have to demonstrate love for each other in this congregation, in the Torah’s words: ve’ahavta le’reiacha kamocha... be effusive in your love for each other, just as you would want for yourself. It’s not just the clergy or the professionals or the staff who have that responsibility, it’s every single one of us. The author Ron Wolfson says that we need more evangelical Jews... Jews who see as their mission helping other Jews to find a way into the community, who believe in what’s happening at their shul so deeply, that they want other people to experience the beauty and the comfort and the fulfillment that they do.

Folks, I don’t want to do synagogue business as usual.

I don’t want to be another boilerplate, suburban, pareve, Conservative synagogue. I want our shul to change lives. I want our shul to nourish people’s neshamot -- to fill their souls with Jewish spirituality and wisdom and hope. I want our shul to help them to become better spouses, better parents, better Jews,

t’s June, almost time for Color War, bug juice and Shabbat under the stars. This summer, an estimated 62,000 children will attend a Jewish summer camp. The American Jewish community, per capita, sends more kids to camp than any other group. Why?

Around the turn of the century, social reformers began organizing summer camps to bring city kids out into the country for fresh air and recreation.

The Jewish community followed the lead of the greater community, but even with more enthusiasm. Jewish leaders wanted to help “Americanize” Eastern European immigrant children. The camps themselves did little that was specifically Jewish, but all the campers were Jewish. By the 1920s, there were hundreds of camps built on lakes and in forests around the country, many of them Jewish.

In our area, Camp Airy and Camp Louise were founded in 1924 and 1922 respectively by Baltimore philanthropists Aaron and Lilly Straus to give Jewish kids in Baltimore a reprieve from the city. Reportedly, they purchased the land for Camp Louise with a $1 deposit.

Camp Goers in the 1960s

As the Jewish community assimilated more, the purpose of the camps shifted. By the 1920s and onward, Jewish summer no longer emphasized secular acculturation, but Jewish education and identity. There were Yiddish camps, Zionist camps and socialist camps. Camp Moshava, which several Har Shalom kids attend, was founded in 1936 as part of the labor Zionist movement and moved to its present location in 1969. One of the early programs at Moshava was Hachshara, where campers worked the land to prepare for Aliyah.

In the 1940s, the different Jewish movements began opening up their own summer camps. The first Camp Ramah opened in 1947 in Conover, WI, as an initiative of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Camp Ramah in the Poconos opened in 1950 and Camp Ramah opened in 1953, and moved to the present site in 1965. The founders envisioned Ramah as a place of Jewish education, connection and leadership development.

And what about Capital Camps? It is the newest sleep-away camp in our area, opened in 1988 by the Jewish community.

My sister worked Capital Camps during its inaugural summer.

Although I happen to be a Camp Louise alumni myself, my daughter Arianna will be spending her second summer at Capital Camps.

Join lay-leaders for this popular, long-standing Torah discussion group, each Shabbat at approximately 12:40 pm. No Hebrew knowledge or previous Torah study necessary; just an interest in looking at Torah text and discussing it with other members of the Har Shalom community.

Minha, Torah Study, Ma’ariv Study Group Ongoing, Saturdays, 15 minutes before candle-lighting time for the previous day Since 1990, Har Shalom congregants have celebrated the end of Shabbat with a lay-led Minha, Torah Study, Ma’ariv Study Group.

This 90-minute service includes 30 to 40 minutes of learning on the weekly Torah portion or the prayers and their meaning. Dr. Stan Siegel and other congregants and clergy members have led the teaching and discussion. Come discover this gem of learning at Har Shalom - twenty-five years in the making.

USY will be electing a new board. Our 9th – 12th graders who decide to run for the board will write speeches. They will stand up in front of their peers and tell them why they believe they can make a difference for this chapter. They will present new ideas that correspond to the position they are running for, and finally the teens will vote. It takes an immense amount of courage for our kids to run. The teens elected will be the leaders of the chapter. With the support of the Youth Director and USY advisor they will plan and execute all USY programs for the coming year.

They will learn new things and grow as our young leaders. Good luck to all the candidates.

The Men’s Club is delighted to announce that our speaker for our final brunch before the Fall will be Geoffrey Melada, Editor-in-Chief of Washington Jewish Week. Readers of WJW have probably noticed a different tone to the paper since new owners took over several months ago. Our impression is that it has more zip and more balanced debate of the many issues confronting our community. Melada is both an award winning journalist and a former prosecutor and white-collar criminal defense attorney admitted to practice in three states – certainly an interesting mixture.

$50 buy-in. All adult members of Har Shalom are welcome and may invite friends from outside the community. Cash and trophy prizes for winners. Optional re-buys available if you go out early, but still want to play. Light refreshments, soft drinks and beer provided.

With summer arriving, it’s a good time to summarize this year’s events – so far. Since September, we had a dinner every month except for October and April, when we had golf outings. These dinners were at a variety of restaurants – all of which were either kosher or had a good vegetarian selection on their menu. The May dinner was held at the Blue Star Kosher Restaurant. But wait!!! There is more to come.

These dinners have been so popular that the attendees want to continue them all year, recognizing that participation will be a little lower because of vacations and other summer activities. So, the next dinner will be on Thursday, June 18 at 6:30 pm, at a location to be determined.

RSVP to AdultKidsClub@harshalom.org if you plan to attend. These dinners are open to all members of the Men’s Club AND to anybody else who might join the Men’s Club.

The Adult Kids Club is part of the Men’s Club. We are open to suggestions regarding other events. All of these activities are aimed at guys who are about 50 years old or older. It’s a great way for guys to get together. We try to send out monthly reminders by email.
