lt wasn't 100, but it was a few more than last time when the adult males gathered at Cay-Uma-Wa Head Start to welcome youngsters on their first day of school. The kids ran the gauntlet with high fives from the men. For a photo of that, turn to page 3.

Information for the atlas has been gleaned from a number of sources on and off over a period of more than a dozen years, starting in 2001 when Tamastslikt Cultural Institute hosted a linguistic convocation for elders, students and scholars. Anthropologist Eugene Hunn began a TAMASTSLIKT CULTURAL INSTITUTE conversation about his collection Book Signing of about300 place names he had Caw Pawa Laakni - They Are Not gathered from tribal informants Forgotten throughout the inland Northwest, Sahaptian Place Names Atlas of the including names in the ceded Cayuse, Umatilla, and Wa//a Wa//a Friday, October 9 from 2-4 p.m. lands of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR). He offered the names to Tamastslikt. Elders here, asked what they wanted to do with the names, told Tamastslikt staff to turn them into an educational tool. So the work began. Further research turned up another 300 place names from already recorded oral histories and from elders in the CTUIR Language Program.

Questionnaire shows differences between BOT chair candidates MISSION — What started out to be a story comparing the four candidates or chairman of the Board of Trustees or the Confederated Tribes of the Umailla Indian Reservation took a left turn when only two of them turned in CUJ questionnaires. Challengers Kat Brigham and Elwood Patawa answered some of the questions. Incumbent Chairman Gary Burke did not turn the form in to the CUJ. And, in his defense, Stuart Harris may or may not have received his questionnaire. The CUJ tried through Facebook to get the form to him. At any rate, there was no reply. As a reminder, the election is Nov. 17. Voters here will fill nine positions from nearly two dozen names and at least one declared w r i t e-in candidate. Because Brigham isn't running for her secretary seat, voters will select only one new candidate for sure. Eight of the other nine incumbents could be re-elected. Voters will choose between four candidates for BOT chairman: incumbent Gary Burke and challengers Kat Brigham, Elwood Patawa and Stuart Harris. Two candidates for General Council c hairman: incumbent A lan C r a w f o r d and declared write-in Bob Shippentower. Two candidates for BOT vice-chairman: incumbent Leo Stewart and challenger Jeremy Wolf.
