’OME DEVELOPMENT CTUIR becomes first Indigenous community selected for Amazon’s Think Big Space; ribbon-cutting held for opening

Board of Trustees members and Amazon Web Services, Inc. celebrated the grand opening of the Think Big Space, an educational lab located at the CTUIR Education Department’s After School Center in Mission. The new AWS Think Big Space is designed to help students explore what the tribe calls “CSTEM” – cultural science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – and will focus on inspiring learning around environmental topics. These projects will focus on issues the CTUIR are currently facing while looking at tools to help resolve the issues with technology. The CTUIR will focus on projects related to water, soil, temperature, and renewable energy. An emphasis on machine learning and data collection will be used.” Year one objectives, also stated within the project proposal, are for students to learn how to operate raspberry pi boards, learn how to program a simple raspberry pi program, learn how to identify a First Food, learn how to germinate a seed of a First Food and

BY JILL-MARIE GAVIN THE CUJ MISSION – The Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) and Amazon Web Services, Inc.’s (AWS) Think Big Space was a project kept under tight wraps during its inception, but once the ball got rolling it started picking up speed. The CTUIR AWS Think Big Space project was underway long before it was publically announced, due to non-disclosure agreements between Amazon and CTUIR, but from October 2021 to the Grand Opening held March 31, it was a non-stop race to complete the project. The state of the art education lab was placed in the CTUIR’s After School Education Program (ASEP), supervised by Linda Sampson, ASEP Coordinator. The equipment placed in the ASEP is designed to help students explore what CTUIR calls “CSTEM” – cultural science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – and will focus on inspiring learning around environmental topics.
