Here we are…..deep in the middle of a brutal cold winter! But March is only 27 days away!!
Lately, I have been asked a lot whether or not if snow is good for the golf course The answer is YES and NO, here is why…
Yes, the snow acts like a blanket covering the turf from frigid artic air. As I write this article, we have been in single digits temperatures all week long Underneath, the snow where the turf is, it is roughly a balmy 30 to 32 degrees F while outside air can be 0 degrees F. So, it is a perfect timing for snow covering prior to artic blast
However, there is one catch....
No, melting snow can form into ice underneath the snow. Having an ice layer on the turf especially on the greens can lead to winterkill.Winterkill is caused by crown hydration, desiccation, ice encasement, and snow mold. Poa (Annual Bluegrass) is highly susceptible to winterkill. The first 30 days of snow covering is not a concern; however we start to worry after 30 days. If the weather persists, we would take drastic measures to safely remove snow and ice. After 60 days of covering, there is a high likelihood of plant death. The good news like I said earlier, only 27 days until March.I would be more nervous if this had happened in beginning of December. Another HUGE preventive maintenance that we put in place is deep tining and core aeration during the 2 week of November. This allows water to drain easier thru the frozen soil with fresh aeration holes available Also, having extra topdressing helps buffer the crowns of the plant from the harsh elements of the weather nd
We will keep a close eye on the turf underneath the snow We are always ready to remove snow if necessary after 30 days.
Stay warm and see you around.
