ecclesiastes 3:1
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven"
editor's note.
There are two books in the Bible that have greatly impacted my Christian walk
The first one is the Book of Ezekiel ( chapter 37 specifically) and the second one is Ecclesiastes which is this issue's opening scripture
The book of Ecclesiastes is all about life lessons, wisdom, and seasons of life. Whereas the book of Ezekiel is all about visions, prophecy, and the authority we have through our words
In Ezekiel 37:1-10 God asks the prophet a game changing question
"Son of man, can these bones live?" I said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone know."
The Lord followed the question with a command
"Prophesy to these bones and say to them, `Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!
Which Ezekiel did and we all know what happened next.
Ezekiel went from not knowing if the dry bones would live again to prophesying over the same bones From death to life From powerlessness to authority, thus changing the course of an entire generation
To me, summer is so much more than warmer months, it is a season for blooming. Much like Ecclesiastes 3:1, there is a time and purpose for everything. We created this issue for the purpose of blooming by commanding the bones in your life to live again whether it be by enrolling in swimming lessons so you can be the first one in your family to learn how to swim ( see our BLACK SWAN article). Or introducing your friends to healthy summer treats ( see our Taste and See Section) We're here to let you know that we all have the authority of Jesus Christ to shift our lives and the generations to come
In closing, we had a wonderful time creating this issue; I want to extend a special thanks to our contributors for blessing these digital pages with their extremely creative ideas
I look forward to seeing you in the Fall.
Creatively yours,
life (style)

THE
idea that black people can’t swim is a common stereotype that has been perpetuated for decades
While it is true that black Americans are less likely to know how to swim compared to their white counterparts, the notion that they are genetically predisposed to being unable to swim is completely false.
The reason why many black people do not know how to swim is due to a number of factors, including a lack of access to swimming pools and swimming lessons, historical discrimination and segregation and fear of drowning.
Historically, swimming pools were segregated, and black people were not allowed to use them This made it difficult for them to learn how to swim
Even after desegregation, many black communities did not have access to swimming pools, and those that did have access often could not afford to use them Additionally, there have been instances where black people have been discriminated against at public swimming pools, leading to a fear of going near the water
Another factor that contributes to the lack of swimming ability among black people is the fear of drowning
This fear is often passed down through generations, and it can be difficult to overcome Studies have shown that black children are less likely to be enrolled in swimming lessons than white children, which only perpetuates the cycle
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Black children ages 10-14 years old drown in swimming pools at rates over seven times higher than white children (data from 12/2022).
A parent survey from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago revealed that over 26 percent of Black parents and over 32 percent of LatinX parents reported they never learned to swim, compared to less than 4 percent of white parents. Likewise, fewer Black and LatinX children had swimming lessons, compared to white children (46 percent, 47 percent and 72 percent, respectively).
Swimming is a valuable life skill In order to break this cycle and encourage more black people to learn how to swim, we've created a list of places in the UNITED STATES that offer swimming lessons for both children and adults
