SINCE 1881
History
The year 2021 marked the 140th anniversary of Hills, a pioneer in breeding greenhouse roses. Earnest Gurney Hill (E.G. Hill) started Hill and Company in 1881 in Richmond, Indiana, USA. In a world of takeovers and short-lived companies, the values of honesty and fairness, combining the best of art and science with hard work have been key to moving forward in the 21st century.
Born in England, E.G. Hill moved with his family to the United States when he was just four years old. Son of a nurseryman, he followed his father’s footsteps in the plant growing business and then started representing European roses and also breeding roses in Richmond, Indiana in the United States. Famous varieties from the breeding program include Better Times®, Forever Yours®, Royalty® (Vega), Sensation®, Classy®, and Forever Young®.
With the shift of the key production areas for roses to the high-altitude tropics at or near the equator, in the last decade E.G. Hill shifted its breeding to Ecuador. Our breeding is now done inside a commercial rose farm with the laboratory and office in the Southern Hemisphere and the breeding just on the other side of the equator in the Northern Hemisphere. This give us a more constant climate and one that is closer to many of our key customers in South America and East Africa.

Our current offering includes roses in three different groupings:
Adorarosa™
Roses are adored by many as the world’s leading fresh cut flower. This group includes several collections. Some special roses appear in more than one of the groups.
Aromarosa™
We know that the first thing many people do when receiving or selecting a rose is to check for fragrance. Here again is a group of our roses that that travel and maintain their fragrance all the way to be appreciated by consumers.
Abundarosa™
So named due the multiple flowers on each stem, the collections range from some of the most appreciated basic color sprays on the market to the new and different garden and otherwise special types.
Wild ‘n Rare®
Unusual roses that defy being grouped in traditional categories. Combining the best of nature with eye catching shapes.
