À l’issue du premier tour, les candidates et candidats seront invités à formuler un projet artistique personnel qui devra être réalisé dans les deux années suivant l’obtention d’un prix. Cédric Pescia, pianiste et président de la commission artistique du Concours de Genève, évoque cette épreuve inédite.

Comment est né ce projet ?

Durant les premières vagues de la pandémie, nous nous sommes demandé, avec toute l’équipe du Concours de Genève, comment la compétition pourrait évoluer. C’est alors que nous avons eu l’idée d’une épreuve moins traditionnelle et plus personnelle, qui serait plus en adéquation avec l’évolution du monde musical.

Quelle est cette « évolution » ?

Si je repense aux nombreux concerts que j’avais donnés après avoir remporté, en 2002, le Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition à Salt Lake City, je me souviens qu’on me demandait tout le temps de jouer les mêmes concertos. Je n’avais pas vraiment envie de jouer ces œuvres, et d’ailleurs je ne les jouais pas bien, mais à chaque fois que je proposais quelque chose de différent, qui sortait des sentiers battus, ça ne passait pas.

Au fil du temps, les choses ont évolué, et aujourd’hui, j’ai l’impression qu’il y a de plus en plus de place pour les interprètes qui proposent des programmes et des projets originaux, qui collaborent avec d’autres artistes et qui peuvent défendre leurs idées. C’est ça qu’on va rechercher chez les candidats qui se présenteront à la demi-finale. Bien entendu, la qualité musicale demeurera au premier plan, mais il nous paraît important de favoriser des personnes qui aimeraient développer des projets différents. How did the idea come about?

As we were navigating the first waves of the pandemic, the entire team put their heads together to think about how the competition could evolve. We came up with an idea for a less traditional, more personal round that would be more in line with the latest developments in the world of music.

What developments are you referring to?

When I recall the numerous concerts that I gave after winning the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City in 2002, I remember that I was always asked to interpret the same concertos. I didn’t really want to perform these works, indeed I didn’t even play them all that well, but whenever I proposed something different, something that went against the mainstream, it wasn’t welcome. Over time things have evolved, and nowadays there seem to be more and more opportunities for interpreters who propose original projects and programmes, for musicians who collaborate with other artists and stand up for their ideas. That’s what we will be looking for in the semi-finalists. Of course the musical quality remains at the forefront, but we feel that it is important to encourage people who want to develop projects that go against the grain. We have no idea what to expect, and we also abstained from giving any concrete examples in the call for applications so as to avoid any kind of bias. We wanted everything to stay open.
