II TheScriptures A. God’sauthorityismajesticallydisplayedinGenesis1,wherethewords“andGod said”puncturethedarknessofchaosandspeakthecosmosintobeing.Itissupremely challengedbyacreatureofhisownmakinginGenesis3:“didGodreallysay ?”asks theserpentofthewoman(3:1),andthequestionechoesdownthroughthecenturies thatfollow,allthewaytotheBookofRevelation,whereGod’somnipotentreignis eschatologicallyestablishedandeverychallengetohisauthoritydestroyed(19:16; 20:14) ThisisthetheologicalcontextforthequestionoftheauthorityoftheBible WebelievetheBibleisGod’swrittenrevelation.Thus,itsauthorityistheauthorityof God;forwhatScripturesays,Godsays.
III. TheDoctrineofScripture:
A. UnityandDiversity:
1. TheunityoftheScripturesisfoundthroughtherelationshipofthesixty-sixcanonical booksoftheBible.TheunityofScriptureclaimsthattheBiblepresentsa non-contradictoryandconsistentmessageconcerningGodandredemptivehistory ScriptureitselfisoneoftheredemptiveactsbywhichGoddrawspeopleintounion withChristandintoarelationshipwithhimself.
2. Diversityisobservedincomparingtheindividualauthors’presentationsofGodand history.ItisclearthattheBibleconsistsofbookswrittenindi erentages,cultures, genresandstyles Eachbookmustbeinterpretedaccordingtoitsuniquecomposition
B. Authority 1. TheauthorityoftheScriptureisbasednotontradition,thoughtraditionismassively important,anditisnotbasedonitse ectualnaturetoministertothelifeofthe believer.Rather,theScriptureisauthoritativebecauseitistheverywordofGod(2 Tim 2:15) AsGod’sword,weoughttosubmittoitsauthorityinthesamewaywe submittoGod.Godandhiswordcannotbifurcateunlessweloseauthority altogether.AproperdoctrineofScriptureis,therefore,profoundlytheological:itis groundedinthecharacterandnatureoftheGodwhospeakstheScripturesandthe relationshipbetweenGodandhiswords
C. Inspiration 1. Inspirationisthatextraordinary,supernaturalin uenceexertedbytheHolySpiriton thewritersofthecanonicalScriptures,bywhichtheirwordswerealsorenderedthe wordsofGod,and,therefore,inspired Accordingtothismodeofformation,the wholeofScriptureistheproductofdivineactivities ThisdoesnothappenbyThe Spiritoverridingtheactivitiesofthehumanauthors,butinperfectharmonywith them;sothattheScripturesarethejointproductofdivineandhumanactivities.Both thedivineandhumanpenetratethemateverypoint,workingharmoniouslytogether totheproductionofawritingwhichisnotdivinehereandhumanthere,butatonce divineandhumanineverypart,everyword,andeveryparticular.
D Inerrancy/Infallibility 1. IV. TheGodhead
1 Webelieveinoneliving,sovereign,andall-gloriousGod,eternallyexistinginthree Persons:GodtheFather,fountainofallbeing;GodtheSon,eternallybegotten,not made,withoutbeginning,beingofoneessencewiththeFather;andGodtheHoly Spirit,proceedinginthefull,divineessence,asaPerson,eternallyfromtheFatherand theSon Thus,eachPersonintheGodheadisfullyandcompletelyGod Withinthe divineeconomy,eachmemberoftheTrinityworksinunityasOperaTrinitatisad extrasuntindivisa(theexternalworksoftheTrinityareindivisible).WhenGodacts, healwaysactsasTrinity However,theTrinityisalsotobeunderstoodaccordingto thedoctrineofappropriation.Thedoctrineofappropriationnotesthatthefunction oftheSonisnotequallythefunctionoftheFather.However,thefunctionoftheSon isthefunctionoftheTrinity.
