Itistempting,intheeducationworld,tofocusonacademicstotheextentthatchildrenhavealimited experienceoutsideofclassroomwalls.ButiftheapexofaChristianistoloveGodandloveour neighbor,thenweneedtomakesurethatoureducationisnotself-focusedbutisinsteadapracticein humanity

Itisnotthatacademicsisunimportant,itissimplythatwehavecreatedasub-cultureofsmallhumans whosegradeandgradesbecome“whotheyare”Aristotlespokeextensivelyofvirtue Andalthougha pagan,heunderstoodthatastudentwhosimplygainedknowledgehadnotreallyreceivedan education.

AtTheJubileeSchooltheTrivium,whichpedagogicallymovesfromtheconcretetothephilosophical, isappliedateverylevelandineveryeldofstudy,buildingskillsindiscernment.Academicallystrong andstrugglinglearnersareintegratedintolearninggroupsbasedonmasteryofmaterialratherthanage. TheJubileeSchoolaimstoteachstudentsofallabilitylevelsthroughsolidChristianpedagogyand materials.Becauseweareabletotakebothconventionalanduniquelearners(eventhosediagnosed withASD),ourprogramisverydistinct.Weoerclassicalteachingasinputbutonlyexpectclassical outputbasedonthegiftingofeachindividualstudent.Ourteachingisdoneinaone-roomstyle settingwhereweimplementthetriviumandmovefromtheconcretetothephilosophicalasthe studentsareready.

Webelievethatthosediagnosedwithalearningdisability,aswellasthosewithdevelopmentaldelaysor trauma,arenotdenedbytheircondition Theyarerstandforemostimage-bearersofthelivingGod Theseuniquelygifted,andsometimeshurting,childrenhaveamind,abody,andasoulthathasthe sameneedsanddesiresasotherchildren.Forsome,thedierenceisintheirhyper-sensoryskillswhich canoverloadtheirminds Forotherstheyneedaddedassistanceinvariousbehavioralandacademic areas.Becauseofthis,ourgoalistogivethesechildrenalearningenvironmentthathelpsthemorganize theirsensorysystems,seethemselvesasanintegralpartofGod’sworld,andinvestthetalentGodhas giventhem.

CULTURAL ISSUES

TheJubileeSchoolbelievesthatallhumanlifeissacredandthatwearecreatedintheimageofGod andcalledtodefendandprotectthatlife Webelievetherearetwodistinctsexes,maleandfemale TogethertheyreecttheimageandnatureofGodandtheBiblicalmeaningof“marriage”describedin Scripture.(Gen.2:18–25).

TheJubileeSchooliscommittedtoahealthydiscussionofthisissueinawaythatvaluesallthoseof otheropinions,yetdoesnotcompromiseourvalues.OurultimategoalisChristianunitywithinthe parametersoftheApostles’CreedandthetruthofScripture

OVERARCHINGCULTURE

DiligeDeum,DiligeProximum LoveGod,loveneighbor. WhenGodmadehumans,HemadeusinHisownimage,acommunityreectiveofHistriunenature withthecapacitytolove,asHehasloved Inthelastcentury,schoolshaveassumedafragmentedview thatreducesapersontoanindividualinneedofknowledge.AtTheJubileeSchool,webelievein disciplingthewholepersontoloveGodandloveandhonorallpeople.

AugustinedealswiththisinOnChristianTeaching....“Itisinterestingtoconsiderthattopractice lovingGodandlovingourneighbormightbeagreatereducationthananything.Toloveourneighbor istolovetheimageofGod.Toloveourneighborweneedtostudyandunderstandthem.Toknowand loveourneighboristoknowmoreaboutGodandtolearnmoreaboutGodproduceswisdom,and wisdomlivedoutsacricesforourneighbor.”Inotherwords,thecycleofeducationhasgoneawry. DISCIPLINE POLICY

Werecognizethatmaintainingawell-disciplinedclassroomiskeytolearning.Webelievethat “knowledgewithoutvirtueisdangerous.”Therefore,encouragingvirtuousbehaviorthatstemsfrom theheartisasimportantasencouragingexcellenceinmathandgrammar Ayoungstudent’sbehavior, attitude,andphysicaldispositionshouldcontributepositivelytotheclassroomenvironmentandThe JubileeSchool’svalueofshapinggodlycharacter.Ourruleissimpleformaintainingthisdisciplined atmosphere:“loveyourneighborasyourself.”

TheJubileeSchoolusesastructureddisciplineplanfortheclassroomwhilevaryingtheconsequences

basedontheframeofthechildandtheparent’sinput.Althoughourmethodofhelpingthemreach thestandardof“lovingGodandlovingourneighbor”maybedierent,thestandardremains.

ELECTRONICDEVICEPOLICY

Useofpersonalelectronicdevices(i.e.,phones,smartphones,portablegamingdevices,smartwatches, etc.)bystudentsisprohibitedoncampus.Suchdevicesmaybeputonsilentorturnedoandleftin bagsorbackpackswhileastudentisatschooloroncampus.Anyuseofphonesmustbeapprovedby theHeadofSchoolorthesecretary

● Theuseoflaptopsispermissibleforsecondaryacademicpurposesonlyunderthe pre-approveddirectionandsupervisionofateacher

● Arstviolationofthispolicywillresultinimmediateconscationofthedevicetoberetrieved bythestudentattheendoftheday.

● AsecondviolationofthispolicywillresultinaparentconferencewiththeHeadofSchooland thedevice(ifneeded)beingplacedintheHeadofSchool’spossessionatthebeginningofeach dayandreleasedtothestudentattheendofthedayforadecideduponperiodoftime.

● Athirdviolationofthispolicywillresultinadisciplinaryhearing.

● TheJubileeSchoolacceptsnoresponsibilityforuse,breakage,theft,orlossofphoneorother personalitems

CHEATINGANDPLAGIARISM

Cheatingisdenedaslookingatanother’sworkwithouttheteacher’spermission,orcommunicating withanotherduringanexamwithouttheteacher’spermission.

Plagiarismisdenedasusinganother’sworkwithoutthankingthemfortheuse.

Ifeithercheatingorplagiarismisnoticed,theassignmentorexamwillimmediatelyreceivea0 Parents willbenotied.AsecondcheatingorplagiarisminfractionwillresultinanEducationCouncilreview.

DRESSCODEVIOLATION

Ifateachernoticesadresscodeviolation,heorshewillinformtheHeadofSchool.TheHeadof Schoolorsecretarywilltrytomakeaccommodationsbyprovidinguniformsthatwehaveonhand If wedonothaveanyclothesthatt,theparentswillbeaskedtobringintheappropriateclothing.

Afterfourdresscodeviolations,anocevisitwillfollowwithanemailsenttoparents.Afterthefth withinasemester,thestudentwillbesenthome.Subsequentdresscodeviolationswillrequirethe HeadofSchooltotreattheviolationsasocevisitsinaccordancewiththedisciplinepolicy

MISSINGHOMEWORK

Anymissinghomeworkwillbeenteredasa“M”inClassReach Afterthethird“M”orthirdpoor grade,theparentswillbenotied Thelateassignmentpolicyis10%gradereductiontherstday,20% reductionthesecondday,and1percentagepointforanydaythereafter.Astanding“0”willmeanthe assignmentwasneversubmitted.

OFFICEVISIT

TherearevebasicbehaviorsthatwillautomaticallynecessitatedisciplinefromtheHeadofSchool (versustheteacher).Thosebehaviorsarethefollowing:

1. Blatantdisrespectshowntoanystamember.Thestamemberwillbethejudgeofwhether ornotdisrespecthasbeenshown.

2 Dishonestyinanysituationwhileatschool,includinglying,cheating,andstealing

3. Rebellion(i.e.,outrightdisobedienceinresponsetoinstructions).

4. Fighting(i.e.,strikinginangerwiththeintentiontoharmanotherstudent).

5. Obscenelanguage,includingtakingthenameoftheLordinvain.

DISCIPLESHIPPOLICY

Weexpectourclassroomstobeanorderlyandcalmenvironmentandweaskourteacherstomentor theirstudentsingodlyhabits LovingbehaviorismodeledandScriptureisusedforteaching, correction,andtraininginrighteousness(ITim3:16)

Thestudent'steacherwillgiveaverbalwarningandwordsofencouragement Ifthestudentdisobeysthisverbal warningthenthestudent'snamewillbewrittenonthewhiteboard Thisisnottoshamethechildbutto givethemachancetochangetheirdirection.Ifthestudentcontinuestodisobeythentheteachermay sendthestudenttospeakwiththeHeadofSchool.Intheeventthatachildisuncooperative,aparent maybecalledtohelp.

Thegoalofourdiscipleshippolicyisto:

● Directtowardsgodlybehaviorandwalkalongsideparentstonurturetheirchildren

● Helpshowthestudenthowsinaectsrelationshipsandtheimportanceofrestoration.

● Usenaturalconsequencestohelpdirectastudenttomakebetterchoices.

Somestudentsmayneedmoreattentionandsowewillcreateaplantohelpthestudentbesuccessful

DISCIPLESHIPANDCOMMUNICATION

Theteacherofastudentwhoisstrugglingtoobeyintheclassroom,mayreachouttotheparentsto discussthebehavior Ifachildcomestotheoce,theHeadofSchoolwillsendanemaillettingthe parentsknowwhatthestudentwassentforandtheHeadofSchoolmayalsochoosetocallthe student’sparentsintodiscussthesituation.

EXCESSIVEOFFICEVISITS

Asnotedabove,thepurposeofthediscipleshippolicyistoshapegodlycharacterinthestudent.Ifit becomesapparenttotheHeadofSchoolthatthestudent’scharacterisnotimprovingovertime and/orisbecomingworsetothedetrimentoftheschoolculture,theHeadofSchoolwillmeetwith theparentsandtheywillcomeupwithaplantoresolvetheissue.TheHeadofSchoolwillalsomeet withtheparentsincaseswherethestudentexhibitsalackofrepentanceorlacksinterestinattending TheJubileeSchool.TheHeadofSchoolmay,athis/herdiscretion,allowforadditionalmeetingswith theparentsifthepreviousdiscipleshipplantohelpthestudentwasunsuccessful Tohelptheparents understandtheirchild’sbehavior,theymayberequiredtositwiththestudentduringapart,orall,of theschoolday.IftheHeadofSchooldeterminesthatthestudent’sbehavioralissuestillcannotbe correctedthroughthediscipleshipplan(s)generatedbythemeeting(s)withtheparents,thenitwillbe considereda“SeriousDisciplineCase”

SERIOUSDISCIPLINECASES

ASeriousDisciplineCaseoccurswhenastudentexhibitsextremeungodlybehaviorthatimpedesthe cultureoftheschool.Examplesinclude(butarenotlimitedto):

1 Excessiveocevisits(seesectionofthesamenameabove)

2. Unrepentant,consistent,orseriousdisrespectofauthority.

3. Unsafebehavior endangermenttothemselvesorothers.

4 Overtmoralissuesincluding(butnotlimitedto):

a Inappropriatetouching

b. Substanceabuse

c. Illegalactivity

IftheHeadofSchoolhasdeterminedthatthestudent’swordsorbehaviorconstituteaSerious DisciplineCase,thestudentwillbesubjecttoadisciplinehearingbeforetheschoolboard.The disciplinehearingwillincludethestudent,theparent(s),theteacher(ifapplicable),theHeadof School,andschoolboardmembers.Atthispointtheschoolboardwilldeterminethenecessary courseofactionwhichmayincludesuspensionorexpulsionofthestudent.Tuitionwillnotbe

reimbursedforsuspensionsorexpulsions.

TheJubileeSchooloers3coredays,withtheoptionforanadditionalMonday/Fridayhalf-day. OurHumanitiesblockisatthecoreofourcurriculum,anditisorganizedaroundtwoprinciples: worldviewandintegration History,Literature,Bible,Geography,Grammar,Writing,andSpellingare wovenintoanintegratedwholeandtaughtfromadistinctivelyChristianperspective.

Thisblockoftimereectsourcommitmenttorestoringnotonlythecontentbutthestructureof education Ratherthanarigidclassschedulethathurriedlymovesstudentsfromonesubject-specic classtothenext,interruptinggreatdiscussionsormeaningfulprojects,welingerlongerandgodeeper throughintegrationofmaterial,allowingthestudenttimetomasterlearning.

Mathematicstakesmasterytounderstand Thismeansthatbothcorporateinstructionand individualizedlearningareimportantinmasteringtheseskills.Weuseacombinationofintegrated methods,manipulatives,andthetriviumtobuildimportantskillsinthestudyofmathematics.Word problems,workedthroughasagroup,helpwithpuzzlingskillsandouraimistogoamiledeeprather thanamilewidewithmathematicsunderstanding

PHILOSOPHYOFGRADING

GRADINGPOLICY

GradesatTheJubileeSchooldonotinanywayreecttheimmeasurableworthandvalueofeachchild madeinGod’simage,butratheranaccuratereectionofthequalityofworkinagiveneldofstudy atagiventime.AtTheJubileeSchool,gradesservethreebasicpurposes:

1. Tohelpstudentstoimprove.

2. Todeterminethebestplacementlevelforayoungstudent'sacademicability.

3 Toprovideajustandlegitimatemeansofholdingstudentsaccountableforthequalityoftheir work.Gradesprovideawidelyunderstoodmeansofcommunicatingprogressandachievement toparentsandotherpartiessuchascollegeentranceboardsorotherschoolstowhichthe youngstudentmaytransfer.

Wehaveestablishedabalancedandobjectivegradingsystembasedonthesevalues.

INDIVIDUAL GRADES

TheJubileeSchoolwilluseauniquemethodofgradingthatensuresstudentshavetimeto“practice” beforetheyreceiveagrade Thereforeregular“feedback”grades,or“softgrades,”onnewconceptswill beinternallykeptwhilegradesthataectoverallstandingswillberecordedinoursoftwarefor transcripts.Consistentwitheducatingthewholechild,bothattitudeandeortwillbeconsidered withinourgradingsystems.

GROUP PROJECT GRADES

Groupprojectsareapartofcourseworkanditshouldbeexpectedthatgradingofthesewillnotbe individualizedbecausewebelievethatcharacterincommunityrevealstheheart: IThessalonians5:14 “Andweurgeyou,brothersandsisters,warnthosewhoareidleanddisruptive,encouragethe disheartened,helptheweak,bepatientwitheveryone”BecauseTheJubileeSchoolcaresevenmore abouttheheartthantheacademics,groupprojectsallowteacherstoseewherecharacterworkis needed,andsincewearepreparingstudentsforlife,notjustcollege,characterinChristiancommunity isintegralto“LovingGodandLovingNeighbor.”

MATHEMATICAL GRADING POLICY

Becausemathproblemsareobjectivelyrightorwrong,gradeswillbedeterminedusingasimple calculation:numbercorrectoutofthetotalnumberofproblems.Exercisesthatarephilosophically basedwillfollowthehumanitiesscale(seebelow).

Mathexaminationsare30%ofthenalgrade Mathhomeworkcompletionis40%ofthenalgrade. Mathpracticums/projectsare30%ofthenalgrade(grouporindividual).

SCIENCEGRADINGPOLICY

Sincescienceistaughtthroughexperimentsanddiscovery,thiswillbeaparticipationandgroup projectgradeintheprimaryyearsandwillmovetowardsmasterygradingthroughthevariousscientic eldsofstudyinthesecondaryyears.

LATIN GRADING POLICY

LatinistaughttobuildvocabularyandcontinuetogrowEnglishaswellasLatingrammarskills. Assessmentswillbebasedontheseconceptsandpointsawardedforthepurposeofrevealingmastery

HUMANITIES GRADING POLICY

Vocabularyterms,spelling,grammar,anddirectcharacternamesordateswillbeobjectivelygradedand willbescoredusingapoints-basedsystem.WithMasteryasourgoal,studentswillbeaskedtocorrect thewronganswers
