Oneoftheadvantagesofeducationinaninstitutional settingisthatchildrenlearngodlyhabitsandpracticesinthecontextofcommunity

TheGreekwordpaideia(oftentranslated“education”or“upbringing”)connotesmuchmorethan whatistaughtinaclassroom.Paideiareferstoawholewayofpubliclifeandofcitizenship.Inthe Christiancontext,itreferstoadistinctivelyChristianeducationwhichinformsalloflifeunderthe LordshipofChrist(eg,Eph 6:1-4;cf Deut 6:4-9)

WhatmakesClassicaleducationparticularly distinctisitsapproachtohowstudentsaretaught

● “Education” “Education”isaboutthewholeperson.Educationismorethanheadknowledge,itistheformationof theheart,soul,mind,andstrengthwithChristatthecenter.Webelieveeducationbeginswithwonder andendsinworship. Webelieveeducationisdiscipleshipandthatthosewhoteachyourchildren discipleyourchildren OuraimisthateachstudentwouldlearntocultivatealifethatlivesoutJesus’ visionofthekingdomofGodinallthings

Andasthevaluesofthepubliceducationalmodelbecome morediametricallyopposedtothevaluesofChristianliving,thecontrastbetweenthekingdomsofthis worldandthekingdomofGodbecomeallthestarker.WeacknowledgeandarmthatinChrist“are hiddenallthetreasuresofwisdomandknowledge”(Col2:3)and“thefearofTheLordisthebeginning ofknowledge”(Prov.1:7).

“ClassicalChristianEducation”

Classicalschoolsdividetheeducationallifeofachild intothreephases(grammar,logic,andrhetoric)knownastheTrivium,whichtakesadvantageofa student’snaturalcapacityforcertaintypesoflearning

world.ChristianeducationiswherestudentsareformedintheinstructionoftheLord(alsocalled paideia1)

Inthis,Classicaleducationseeksto“cutwiththe grain”oflearningdevelopment.Classicaleducationfocusesonhowtothinkandlearnwithan emphasisonvirtueandwisdom.Itispreciselythiskindofeducationthathasproducedcountless leaders,inventors,artists,andtheologiansthroughouthistory.

“Classical”referstoalongtraditionofeducationthatemphasizestheseekingafteroftruth,goodness, andbeauty.ThisisprimarilydonethroughthestudyoftheLiberalArtsandthe"Greatbooks"of Westerncivilizationthathaveshapedourmodernsociety.

EightGuidingPrinciples

2 DisciplinedTraining:

1. JoyfulEthos:

TheBibledescribesdiscipleshipasworkinghardasuntotheLord(Col 3:23),astrainingfor godliness(1Tim.4:8)andrighteousness(2Tim.3:16).Webelieveeducationisnotsimply aboutcompletingassignmentsandstudyingfortests,butaboutpreparationforlife.Tothis end,wewanteachstudenttonotjustpassclasses,butpursuesubjectmasterybecauseJesusis Lordofallthings.

ThewholeoftheChristianlifeowsfromthejoyreceivedinthegospel(1Pet.1:89).The purposeofeducation,therefore,isnottoearnGod’sacceptancebasedonourperformance, buttorespondwithjoyinallthathehasdone Christianeducationcultivatesanenvironment thatbeginsinwonderandendsinworship.

3. CommunityContext: Educationisincompleteapartfromthecontextofcommunity

5. Christ-CenteredIntegration: WebelieveAbrahamKuyperwasrightwhenhesaid,

“Thereisnotasquareinchinthewhole domainofourhumanexistenceoverwhichChrist,whoisSovereignoverall,doesnotcry:'Mine!'” WebelieveJesushassomethingtosayabouteverysubjectoflearningbecauseeverythingis subjecttohim.Indeed,“inhimallthingsholdtogether”(Col.1:17).Furthermore,webelievea properChristianeducationisaneducationwhich“cutswiththegrain”ofhowwewere designedtolearn.

7. AccessibleQuality: WebelieveeveryChristianparentoughttohaveaccesstothebestChristianeducationfortheir children.Westriveforatuitionstructurewhichdevelopsaqualityprogramandisaccessible forthoseindierentnancialcircumstances

ArtispartofarobustChristianeducationbecauseofitsplaceinScripture InGenesis,Godcreates,sees,and evaluatesallthathemakesandcallsitgood Increation,beautyprecedesutility Becausewearemadeintheimage ofGod,peoplemirrorGodincreatinganddiscerningthatwhichisbeautiful.Artalsohasanethicaldimension (Gen.3:6,Psalm101:3,Matt.6:22,Phil.4:8,1Jn.2:16).Furthermore,artalsoservesasawindowintoother timesandcultureswhichaidsafullerstudyofanthropology.Educationisnotjustaboutthinkingacademically, butalsoappreciatingthatwhichistrue,good,andbeautifultothegloryofGod.

ToobserveandwonderatGod’screationispreparationforworship Scienceisaeldofstudythat helpsusinterpretGod’sworld,butitnevertrumpsScripture,Scriptureisourplumblinefortruthand becausealltruthisGod’struth,continuingtodiscovermoreaboutGod’screationintheeldof ScienceistoknowmoreaboutitsCreator.Wearecalledtotakedominionoftheworld.Whatbetter equipsstudentsinthisthanmasteryintheskillsofscienticstudyasweworktoseeGod’srevelation throughthecreatedorderoftheuniverse.

WebelievethatallhumanlifeissacredandcreatedbyGodinHisimage Humanlifeisofinestimable worthinallitsdimensions,includingprebornbabies,theaged,thephysicallyormentallychallenged, andeveryotherstageorconditionfromconceptionthroughnaturaldeath.Wearethereforecalledto defend,protect,andvalueallhumanlife (Ps 139) Webelievethisisthestartingpointforall discussionsrelatedtothesanctityoflife(eg,abortion,euthanasia,war)

OnSexuality WebelievethatparticipatinginorapprovingofanyformofsexualactivityforbiddenintheBible (includingunmarriedsex,adultery,homosexualorbisexualbehavior,andpornography)issinfuland oensivetoGod(Matt.15:18 20;Rom.1:24 32;1Cor.6:9 10).

OnGender WebelievethatGodwonderfullyandimmutablycreateseachpersonaseithermaleorfemale,bothin biologicalsexandingender.Thesetwodistinct,complementarygenderstogetherreecttheimageof God(Gen.1:26 27).“Torejectone'sbiologicalgenderisanactofrebellionagainstGod'sdesign.”*

OnMarriage WebelievethataccordingtotheBible,marriagehasonlyoneappropriatemeaning:theunionofone manandonewomaninaholyrelationshipintendedtobeexclusiveandlifelong(Gen.2:18 25).We believethatGodintendssexualintimacytooccuronlybetweenmenandwomenjoinedinmarriage(1 Cor.6:18and7:2-5;Heb.13:4).

Essentialdoctrinesarethosedoctrineswhichthechurchhastaught,believed,andconfessed throughouthistory.Essentialdoctrinesarefoundinthosestatementswhichhavehistoricallydened basicChristianorthodoxy:theApostlesCreed,theNiceneCreed,theChalcedonianDenition,and theAthanasianCreed.
