WELCOME
Welcome, graduates, family, friends and honoured guests
On behalf of the entire Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) community, I am honoured to welcome you to our annual convocation celebration. We gather today to celebrate the great achievements of our graduating class of 2023: the young people for whom our institution exists; the ethos of why we do what we do here at CUE.
CUE is located on Treaty 6 territory, and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community. We are committed to furthering reconciliation efforts as we learn about our true and living history, and challenge ourselves to implement what we have learned to create better outcomes for Indigenous students and our greater CUE community.
Our graduates have shown courage, resilience and excellence during their time here at CUE. They’ve had to navigate a pandemic and
a subsequent return to campus, in addition to their academic endeavours. And they have persevered! This adaptability will serve them well as they go on to do great things in their careers - and their communities.
Because here at CUE, being successful means more than just doing well in your studies. We are dedicated to inspiring good citizens, people who are community builders and ethical leaders for the common good. On our campus, what you do matters as much as how you do it. And it is the connections to the people we meet along the way that make that journey worth it.
Graduates, I am so proud of you. Today you convocate from CUE and join the elite ranks of our alumni! We are so excited to see the places you go and the things you will accomplish. You’ll always have a place to belong here in our CUE community and we hope you stay in touch with us. Congratulations!
Dr. Tim Loreman President and Vice-ChancellorOUR HISTORY
Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) is more than an academic institution— we are a community of scholars, dreamers, and doers; people who aren’t afraid to lend a hand, to ask questions, to be bold, to make a difference. For more than 100 years, we have gathered in the heart of Edmonton’s Highlands community and committed ourselves to creating independent thinkers, ethical leaders, and citizens for the common good.
Founded in 1921 as Concordia College by Lutherans from the Americanbased Missouri Synod, the college became a degree-granting institution in 1987 before changing its name to Concordia University College of Alberta in 1995. In 2015, Concordia University College of Alberta became CUE—a secular post-secondary institution that offers an exceptional
learning environment, world-class research centres and facilities, and a premier student experience.
Today, CUE is a vibrant and forwardthinking university. We offer more than 50 undergraduate majors, concentrations and minors, 4 master’s degree programs, and 1 doctorate degree program, in addition to several afterdegree programs, graduate and undergraduate certificates and diplomas, and continuing education programs. We are known for our commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research, and we proudly welcome more than 3,500 students annually from across Canada and around the world.
From humble beginnings, CUE has evolved into a place of spirit,
connection, and excellence, and has entered our next century with momentum as we strive to fulfill our promise of being Canada’s preeminent small university.
No matter what lies ahead for CUE, we will continue to nurture the century-old spirit of community present on our campus, and we will take pride in the stories that are passed down through generations of our students.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia dates back to that which was worn by academics and clergy in European universities of the Middle Ages. The various components of academic regalia have come to symbolize levels of academic scholarship. Variations in sleeves, colours, and decorations represent degree levels and the particular preferences of individual universities. Faculty and guests with doctoral-level degrees participating in Concordia’s graduation ceremonies wear the distinctive academic gown, hood, and cap of the institution from which they graduated.
Hoods are granted to students who have earned University Degrees. The hoods for Concordia’s graduates are lined with blue and white, CUE’s official colours. The colour of the velvet edging indicates the academic discipline in which the degree has been earned:
The gold cord indicates a degree earned with distinction or with high distinction.

CEREMONIAL MACE
The mace is a symbolic artifact that has been used throughout human history. From an emblem used to lead knights into war, to other regal purposes, the mace is now used by post-secondary institutions as a symbol of the organization’s governing authority. The mace-bearer leads the processional as all authorities gather for the most central ceremony of the institution – convocation. The mace, unique in design to embody CUE, rests on its stand throughout the ceremony, as our students are recognized for their earned degrees, diplomas, or certificates.
EAGLE STAFF
An Eagle Staff is a sacred item prepared with prayer and eagle feathers as a ceremonial display of leadership. Eagle feathers, when gifted, are considered the highest honour given by the Indigenous community. The eagle flies the highest, making it the closest being to Creator. When an eagle gifts us its feathers we use them to acknowledge a major contribution or achievement. Each eagle feather on a staff holds significance and tells a story. The CUE eagle staff was created by our Elders Council with many feathers from four communities across Turtle Island. Our Elders Council determines the carrier of the staff, and the CUE President is given the responsibility to keep and display our staff as a reminder to model leadership and to maintain good relations within the Indigenous community.
HONOUR SONG
The Honour Song is a prayer drum song to honour all graduates and the work they have completed while at CUE. It also honours those recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to their community. It is an Indigenous way of celebrating and sending wishes of health and happiness to those who are moving on to their next journeys.

THANK YOU CHANCELLOR STEPHEN MANDEL FOR YOUR DEDICATED SERVICE TO CUE
The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) community expresses their collective pride and gratitude in having Stephen Mandel, former Mayor of Edmonton and Alberta cabinet minister, serve as the Chancellor of our university.
Chancellor Mandel’s leadership and dedication to public service has been invaluable to Alberta, and he continued that legacy at CUE by helping to set a strong foundation for the future growth and success of our university. As Chancellor, he upheld the mission and vision of our institution and modeled good citizenship for our students, faculty, and staff.
“Having worked closely with Chancellor Mandel, I will miss his friendship, wisdom, and tenacity,” said Dr. Tim Loreman, President and Vice-Chancellor. “He helped to guide us through some character-defining moments such as the pandemic
and a labour dispute. He has left an indelible mark on Concordia University of Edmonton. He will forever be an important part of our CUE community.”
Chancellor Mandel is a visionary, and during his tenure at CUE we strengthened our academic offerings, grew our Centre for Innovation and Applied Research, advanced and expanded our research portfolio, and embarked on the largest campus expansion in our history. The Chancellor’s financial contributions, energy, and guidance helped the university to carry out its ambitious goals.
During Chancellor Mandel’s tenure we faced unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic which had an impact on every part of our operations, and impacted students, faculty, and staff. With Chancellor Mandel’s optimism and strong leadership, we switched
to online learning for a year and then transitioned back to in-person classes in 2022. His encouragement helped CUE bear through the storm and come out the other side stronger, against the odds.
We are thankful for Chancellor Mandel’s spirit of collaboration towards improving the university, so it can be a place to serve students from all backgrounds to become leaders of the future. The legacy of Stephen’s contributions will be felt for years to come.
“On behalf of the entire CUE community, we thank Chancellor Mandel for his leadership, wisdom, and guidance. In addition, his contributions have helped fund crucial initiatives that have enhanced the student experience and positioned the university as a leader in higher education.” says Dr. John Acheson, Chair, Board of Governors, CUE.
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC SILVER MEDAL
ALESHA JODY WORTHMANN
Graduate Alesha Worthmann was honoured with the Governor General Academic Silver Medal. Alesha is a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts program with a major in Psychology and a minor in Education.
Alesha felt that a background in psychology would be invaluable as she continues to pursue her career goal of becoming an elementary teacher. The knowledge she has gained allows her to cultivate the well-being of a diverse student body. “I now feel better equipped to provide my students with the support they need to learn, grow, and ultimately realize their full potential,” says Alesha.
Alesha was drawn to the small class sizes at CUE, and having a personalized education experience. “Rather than sitting silently in a packed lecture hall, I was able to take part in class conversations that involved sharing ideas and life experiences,” Alesha explains.
She was able to form meaningful connections with peers and faculty at university and believes they will have a lasting impact on her life. “It was reassuring to know that if I needed support at any point, there was always someone I could turn to.”
Alesha is excited to continue her academic journey here at CUE and will be returning in the Fall for a Bachelor of Education After Degree.
“I have always been passionate about working with children. Time spent volunteering within my community and working in recreation affirmed that this was the career path meant for me,” says Alesha.
Alesha’s advice for current students is to always have a goal in mind. “While the journey to graduation might feel long and difficult, setting goals throughout will motivate you to push through those stressful periods and help you keep things in perspective. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you can achieve anything!”
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC GOLD MEDAL RAGHAVKUMAR DEEPAKKUMAR THAKKAR
Graduate Raghavkumar Thakkar was honoured with the Governor General Academic Gold Medal. Raghav is a graduate from the Master of Science in Information Technology.
Raghav has worked in the software development industry for over eight years and, after earning a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, word-of-mouth about the excellent Master’s program at CUE enticed him to apply. Raghav is grateful that the MScIT program has given him the knowledge and experience necessary to excel in this field.
Despite the unexpected disruption caused by the pandemic, Raghav said he was impressed with the terrific learning environment for him while he studied machine learning from home in India. “I appreciated the effort put into ensuring that the online classes were engaging and interactive, and that the professors were available and responsive to my questions and concerns.”
Raghav beams when speaking about Innovation Launchpad, a program that provides students with the resources, support, and mentorship they need to turn their innovative ideas into successful businesses. Raghav thanks CUE faculty and staff for not only supporting his ideas, but also for connecting him with many industry experts.
Raghav says Innovation Launchpad provided handson, real-world experience to give him the confidence to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions. His project “Intelligent Energy Calculator” was winner of the Most Interactive Presenter title at the Machine Learning Innovation Symposium last Fall.
Raghav says that his MScIT degree provided him with a competitive edge in the job market. Post-graduation Raghav is excited to say he has already found full-time employment as a software developer in Edmonton, and hopes to stay in the city where his family also resides.
In the future, Raghav said he hopes to work in the government sector as a solutions architect, designing and implementing technology solutions for government agencies.
His advice to students is to “apply for jobs and connect with industry from the day you first step foot in university. Industry is looking for graduates from CUE with specialized skills, so apply early so they can keep you in mind once you graduate.”
