WELCOME

Welcome graduates, family, friends, and honoured guests
On behalf of the entire Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) community, I am honoured to welcome you to our annual convocation celebration. We gather today to celebrate the great achievements of our graduating class of 2025: the young people for whom our institution exists; the ethos of why we do what we do here at CUE.
CUE is located on Treaty 6 territory and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community. We are committed to furthering reconciliation efforts as we learn about our true and living history, and challenge ourselves to implement what we have learned to create better outcomes for Indigenous students and our greater CUE community. Our graduates have shown courage, resilience, and excellence during their time here at CUE. The post-
secondary environment provides a variety of new challenges for students—not only academically— and our graduates have persevered! This adaptability will serve them well as they go on to do great things in their careers and their communities. Here at CUE, being successful means more than just doing well in your studies. We are dedicated to inspiring good citizens, people who are community builders and ethical leaders for the common good. On our campus, what you do matters as much as how you do it. And it is the connections to the people we meet along the way that make that journey worth it.
Graduates, I am so proud of you. Today you convocate from CUE and join the elite ranks of our alumni! We are so excited to see the places you go and the things you will accomplish. You’ll always have a place to belong here in our CUE community and we hope you stay in touch with us. Congratulations!
Dr. Tim Loreman President and Vice-Chancellor
OUR HISTORY
Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) is more than an academic institution—we are a community of scholars, dreamers, and doers; people who are not afraid to lend a hand, to ask questions, to be bold, to make a difference. For more than 100 years, we have gathered in the heart of Edmonton’s Highlands community and committed ourselves to creating independent thinkers, ethical leaders, and citizens for the common good.
Founded in 1921 as Concordia College by Lutherans from the American-based Missouri Synod, the college became a degree-granting institution in 1987 before changing its name to Concordia University College of Alberta in 1995. In 2015, Concordia University College of Alberta became CUE—a secular
post-secondary institution that offers an exceptional learning environment, world-class research centres and facilities, and a premier student experience.
Today, CUE is a vibrant and forward-thinking university. We offer more than 50 undergraduate majors, concentrations and minors,
4 master’s degree programs, and 1 doctorate degree program, in addition to several afterdegree programs, graduate and undergraduate certificates and diplomas, and continuing education programs. We are known for our commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research, and we proudly welcome more than 3,500 students annually from across Canada and around the world.

From humble beginnings, CUE has evolved into a place of spirit, connection, and excellence, and has entered our next century with momentum as we strive to fulfill our promise of being Canada’s preeminent small university.
No matter what lies ahead for CUE, we will continue to nurture the century-old spirit of community present on our campus, and we will take pride in the stories that are passed down through generations of our students.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia dates back to that which was worn by academics and clergy in European universities of the Middle Ages. The various components of academic regalia have come to symbolize levels of academic scholarship. Variations in sleeves, colours, and decorations represent degree levels and the particular preferences of individual universities. Faculty and guests with doctoral-level degrees participating in Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE)’s graduation ceremonies wear the distinctive academic gown, hood, and cap of the institution from which they graduated.
Hoods are granted to students who have earned university degrees. The hoods for CUE’s graduates are lined with blue and white, CUE’s official colours. The colour of the velvet edging indicates the academic discipline in which the degree has been earned:
ARTS White SCIENCE Gold
MANAGEMENT
Drab
EDUCATION Blue
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH Salmon
DOCTOR OF LAWS Purple
The gold cord indicates a degree earned with distinction or with high distinction.

CEREMONIAL SYMBOLS
CEREMONIAL MACE
The mace is a symbolic artifact that has been used throughout human history. From an emblem used to lead knights into war, to other regal purposes, the mace is now used by post-secondary institutions as a symbol of the organization’s governing authority. The macebearer leads the processional as all authorities gather for the most central ceremony of the institution— convocation. The mace, unique in design to embody CUE, rests on its stand throughout the ceremony, as our students are recognized for their earned degrees, diplomas, or certificates.
EAGLE STAFF
An Eagle Staff is a sacred item prepared with prayer and eagle feathers as a ceremonial display of leadership. Eagle feathers, when gifted, are considered the highest honour given by the Indigenous community. The eagle flies the highest, making it the closest being to Creator. When an eagle gifts us its feathers we use them to acknowledge a major contribution or achievement. Each eagle feather on a staff holds significance and tells a story. The CUE Eagle Staff was created by our Elders Council with many feathers from four communities across Turtle Island. Our
Elders Council determines the carrier of the staff, and the CUE President is given the responsibility to keep and display our staff as a reminder to model leadership and to maintain good relations within the Indigenous community.
THE DRUM, TREATY 6 FLAG SONG, AND VICTORY SONG
The drum is a highly respected and sacred spirit that connects many Indigenous peoples from this territory to the spiritual world. The drum protocols and ceremonial songs that are observed by their singers are acquired through strict and traditional knowledge transfer systems. Honour songs require the highest form of respect by standing and removing any headwear.
The flag song is sung to acknowledge the spirit of the eagle staff, flags, and veterans. This is done at Convocation to respect the agreements between the sovereign Treaty 6 Nations and the Crown as well as issue the reminder that we are all gathered on Indigenous lands.
The victory song is sung to celebrate a great victory and its warriors. This song is at Convocation to acknowledge the battles faced by Indigenous students and celebrate your graduation as a modern warrior.

GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC SILVER MEDAL
ALLISON MARTENS
Allison Martens was honoured with the Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal. Allison has completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Education.
Allison was drawn to the fields of psychology and education out of a desire to help others. While in high school, she received many recommendations from others to enrol at CUE. She found the small class sizes appealing.
“The idea that I could be more than a number to my professors is what I valued most while looking into postsecondary options,” she says.
“It is one thing to learn about the theory that relationships are essential to the classroom; to experience it firsthand is something else.”
Allison has been accepted into the Bachelor of Education (After Degree) program at CUE and plans to become an elementary school teacher. Her goal is to provide children with a supportive space where they can safely make mistakes as they learn and grow.

Her advice to her peers is that attending university is not simply about achieving a goal, it is also about enjoying the journey. She says, “The classes were fantastic, the professors were great, but the biggest highlight was the friends I made along the way.”
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC GOLD MEDAL
ALEXANDRA JERRARD-MACFADYEN
Alexandra Jerrard-MacFadyen was honoured with the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal. Alexandra is a graduate of the Master of Education in Educational Leadership program.
Alexandra completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (After Degree) at CUE in the late 1990s. During her teaching career, she noticed a concerning shift in students’ mental health and overall well-being. This motivated her to return to CUE to pursue a Master of Education to empower her to make an even greater difference.
“At CUE I was challenged academically while also consistently encouraged by my professors and classmates,” she says.
“Professors at CUE are grounded in an ethic of care and exemplify the kind of educator I aspire to be.”
Alexandra sees multiple paths ahead in her journey of supporting positive learning environments locally and beyond, and she is excited about the possibilities, whether they be taking on a school administrator role or conducting research aimed at improving the mental health of students and educators.

Alexandra’s message to current and future students is to not fear vulnerability. “Life lessons contain threads of wisdom that can be woven into a beautiful tapestry of knowledge,” she says.
