William’s Food Hall 3 Fountain St, Nailsworth, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL6 0BL Design | Build | Furnish

 “TRUST - believe in the reliability, truth, or ability of something or someone When planning our cocktail bar, Richard Wilson, MD of Concorde BWG said ‘‘trust me and my team to deliver what you want, on time and within budget’’. This was not an easy statement to believe but I am delighted to say it was true.

William’s Food Hall, a fishmonger and delicatessen refurbished by Concorde BGW in 2020 has won the Bar & Restaurant <£250k award at the Northern Design Awards! Their nautical themed interior is an engaging retail environment where old meets new; it tells the brands story by creating an immersive shopping experience. The redesign of the venue aimed to increase covers whilst creating an adaptable space to allow William’s to operate predominately as a fish monger and delicatessen but also as a seafood restaurant and coffee forum. williamsfoodhall.co.uk

We now have the most beautiful space that was delivered just as promised; not quite on time, but then we did have a little ‘down tools lockdown’ in the middle of the project. This did not deter the team and our vision became real just as we had imagined.

Allison Garner, Commercial and HR Director, Ragdale Hall

From front page

Ragdale Hall are constantly reinvesting to improve their spa experience. Although heritage is important, so is keeping up with the times and the changing market expectations. The new Twilight Lounge needed to appeal to the next generation of spa goers who like sophisticated venues with a glamourous drink’s menu. The building which previously housed The Mind Gym was extended to achieve a size of 914sq ft to allow for the new Twilight Lounge. The new extension has an oxidized copper finish to its shell which gives it its eye-catching turquoise appearance. The finishes of the existing garden room have been

updated to match the new extension and give an overall sense of cohesion. The glamourous decade of the 1920’s which brought with it its famous art deco style is subtly expressed in elements of the Twilight Lounge’s design. Angular furniture in dark green hues along with exotic touches of parlour palms, colourful House of Hackney wallpaper and a rich colour palate of fabrics makes its design both opulent and exotic. The moody, dramatic lighting in the lounge creates a sense of intrigue and luxe sophistication and forms the perfect backdrop for accent pieces

such as gold scalloped tiles and fringed pendant lighting. Scallop prints and shapes are timeless yet quirky and modern and have been used in Ragdales fixed seating which is totally unique to the venue. The scallop shape appears again on the bar front, a sweeping gold and white tiled showstopper. Its a beautifully tiled feature that makes the bar really sparkle and is an instant talking point. Large bifold windows let plenty of natural light into the lounge whilst allowing guests to enjoy an inside/ outside atmosphere with the garden area.

The rejuvenated garden has plenty of places to hideaway. The new landscaping and a bespoke water feature adds to the sense of tranquillity with the calming sound of running water and aromatics from the planting making it a very special place to unwind. Overall, the Twilight Lounge is a memorable space at Ragdale Hall Spa, it has many exceptional features which all work together to form an approachable yet exclusive cocktail lounge. The new bar has allowed Ragdale to continue to stay fresh and relevant with both new and existing clientele. ragdalehall.co.uk

 We’re delighted with the new look pub and can’t wait to show the regulars and guests what we’ve done. The heart and the soul of this much-loved building is very much still intact but we’ve subtly brought it up to date with a fresher look and feel.

Horse & Groom The Street, Charlton, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, SN16 9DL Design | Build | Furnish

Dating back to the 16th century, The Horse & Groom is a grade II-listed pub and inn in the heart of Charlton, near Malmesbury in Wiltshire. Recently reopened after a full refurbishment, expect stylish, cosy interiors, five luxurious bedrooms, and a gorgeous new rear dining room and event space – The Stables. Fronted by a tree-sheltered lawn and surrounded by its own paddock, The Horse & Groom offers plenty of space for al fresco drinking and dining. To allow households or socially distant friends to sit together in a waterproofed space, a temporary marquee was put in the garden which replaced the old smoking area solution with open sides. The new marquee, named The Stables, can hold up to 48 people, has a timber-clad interior, is decked out with heaters and has fabric draped from the ceiling. A hand painted ghost sign within the marquee creates a central feature and is a prominent brand statement for the brewery. A new lobby attached to the pub connects the external toilet block to the main building – great news for the gents who no longer have to walk outside to reach the toilets. The luxurious bedrooms have embraced a classic design style with their rich colour schemes and comfortable yet slightly formal vibe. New original artwork, unique table lamps and artificial planting complement the existing furniture which is

traditional yet somewhat casual. The oversized upholstered headboards add a further touch of luxurious style. In true Butcombe fashion the rooms narrate a story – they are aptly named after a place of local interest which is sign written on the door. The ensuite bathrooms with their rolltop baths add something a little different. Wood panelling painted in pastel shades provide the perfect backdrop for the sophisticated fittings. The pub itself which was ready for a refresh has been bought up to the Butcombe brand standard by combining Cotswold styling with upholstered furniture and fittings. The cosy bar with original flagstone floors has an open log fire and a considered furniture layout to create a better atmosphere and define areas. Overall, The Horse & Groom has maintained the values and interior aesthetics of a traditional pub but with a modern influence that makes it more aspirational and timeless.

The Ostrich Lower Guinea St, Redcliffe, Bristol BS1 6TJ Design | Build | Furnish

The tipis in the Ostrich’s vast garden were specifically installed to cater for patrons during the pandemic, plus they make the most of the stunning views offered by the pub’s harbourside location. Internally, each tipi has decked flooring, planting, festoon lighting and a warming open fire in the centre. A new external kitchen was constructed with serving hatches and some cover for direct catering services for the busy outdoor area. The tipis are a temporary structure which allow the client to move them and use wherever they are needed, they also provide the perfect space for private bookings. butcombe.com/the-ostrich-pub-bristol

The Lime Kiln Knole, Langport TA10 9JH Design | Build

The Lime Kiln’s remodel of their outdoor area transformed a tired garden into a stylish shelter in the form of a covered pergola. Pergolas incorporate beauty and function in any garden providing shade, and comfort outside the pub. The Lime Kiln’s thoughtfully designed pergola has added character to their outdoor space and defines a separate area from the rest of the yard.

creates a mix of formal and functional areas for patrons to dine in.

It offers a relaxing outdoor retreat with its feature planting and twinkling night lights. The sides of the pergola are clad with reclaimed timber, branded with the Butcombe logo and have characterful faux ivy creeping up onto the beams.

There are few things as evocative of summer as eating meals alfresco. That’s never been more true than right now when we are only able to do this (lockdown and tier dependent). The Lime Kiln’s garden will certainly cater to the ideals of summer whilst being a cosy garden nook, an outdoor dining area, or simply an installation to maximise kerb appeal.

The clever use of fixed seating constructed with reclaimed timber compliments the rustic look of the pergola and

The White Horse — 4 Wembley Park Blvd, Wembley Park, Wembley HA9 0HP Design | Build | Furnish | 3D Visuals

For customers coming up Olympic Way onto Wembley Park Boulevard they will be greeted by a pub garden buzzing with life and a classic pub sign signalling they have arrived at Wembley Park’s newest Pub, The White Horse. The design of The White Horse has created a distinctive look that is simultaneously warm, welcoming and contemporary but also functional to the needs of Fuller’s and the people who live, work, shop and play in this worldfamous cultural neighbourhood. The building in which The White Horse resides is almost rectangular and features sky-high ceilings supported by trusses. The open-plan interior has been divided visually and physically which fills the hollowness of the room and maximises trade space. The introduction of a mezzanine has split the open plan interior into two floors.

Overall, the White Horse has two spaces with different identities, the upper floor is private and the lower more social. Both floors have their own bars, W.C.’s and stunning views. The pub also features ample outdoor space for al fresco drinking and dining, with a quaint external garden at ground level and an incredible outside terrace that overlooks The SSE Arena, Wembley. It is a traditional pub put into modern shell that is fitting for Wembley Park and the Fuller’s brand whilst offering a quintessential pub experience.

Five Oaks Pub & Dining Five Oaks Eating House, La Rue A La Dame, St. Saviour, Jersey, JE2 7NH Design | Build | Furnish | Brand

Recently refurbished, the Five Oaks pub is a little bit of Liberation Group luxury. Located just outside St Helier town centre. Currently, contractors face many challenges when undertaking refurbishment works on the Channel Islands, they include travel restrictions and selfisolation requirements, but also carrying out the work itself, site inspections and client meetings. A concise schedule of works executed by a very small team allowed this project to go ahead, as well as the use of digital technologies such as communicating through video calls. 3D walkthroughs of the site permitted client meetings to go ahead all socially distant and safe. Signalling the venues upgrade to passers-by is the new entrance from the car park into the triple glazed lobby together with stunning outdoor decorations and new signage. The cedar cladding to the building’s exterior gives it a fresh contemporary look.

Newly installed bi-fold doors were the perfect solution in improving access to the pub from the garden. The glazed wind barrier to the garden’s perimeter cuts down street noise and wind and gives the terrace real impact and a feeling of exclusivity. Carefully curated outdoor furniture and accessories are nestled under Jumberalls with heat lights which provide maximum comfort to those wanting to dine alfresco. A bespoke totem pole and a plush planting installation captures interest. Demolition works have been undertaken to create the sites successful open plan layout. Centrally, a new wrap around bar brings together the drinking and dining areas

creating one transitional space. The extended kitchen can cater for the expected increase in custom and an open food pass adds theatre to the delivery of meals. There has been no compromise on the cosiness of the bar with its new feature fireplace acting as a warming accent to the area. Forward thinking allowed for reclaimed timber and glass screens to be added which safely separate diners during the pandemic. Not only do they feel inclusive of the scheme and not just a pandemic related afterthought, but they are practical and beautiful too. Rustic furniture and fixed seating formed with layers of natural materials such as wood, leather and even the thick grey hanging cushions add to the pubs ‘industrial ambiance’.

The benefits of this renovation range from discovering original features such as the vaulted ceilings which give the rooms so much more space, to the opportunity for Liberation group to put their own stamp on the pub. It was the perfect way of the site getting more pub for its money with better drinking and dining areas with a more communal and inviting outdoor space in a very popular Jersey location. The success of the refurbishment ultimately came down to good preparation and being aware of what lied ahead. The step-by-step plan of action meant the project remained on schedule and on budget even during these challenging times.

NAAFI Falkland Islands Falklands Design | Build | Furnish |Branding | 3D Visuals

Whilst many miles away from home NAAFI provides a retail and leisure offer to 1,500 serving personnel and contractors in the Falkland Islands. Not only is this an incredibly unique project – there are few examples of similar in-situ refurbishment work done anywhere else in the region – but once all materials and equipment were ordered it had to be shipped 8,000 miles, in 21 containers to reach the Falklands. All of this during a global pandemic where the already minimal commercial flights and visiting ships were scarce, isolation upon arrival was required and due to the restrictions on travel, the entire site had to be designed without ever visiting it. All refurbished areas big or small, are filled with flexible furniture, giving NAAFI the power to make the most of it. The large dining area in the Dolphin Bar & Diner has lots of booths and cluster seating

to create intimate small group sections for military personnel to be able to hang out together in a more relaxed environment. The new branding and sign above the entrance is smart and creates awareness of the new interior. Investment in the food and drinks offering has introduced an all-day lounge bar which now deliverers Lavazza quality coffee. At the air terminal, the Duty Free Shop was carefully demolished and a new unit put back in its place which now allows customers to walk into the unit rather than being served over the counter. Finally, The Gull & Penguin, the largest of the three schemes is now a truly multi-functional space where patrons can eat, meet or be entertained. Brightly coloured lighting under

the bar helps to add an effortlessly fun feel to the laid-back décor. A new food retail counter appropriately branded with an illuminated sign saying “Food to go” ensures a better product display and a streamlined checkout system. The new display cabinets improve the customer experience and will improve the revenue of the shop. The refurbishment of NAAFI, Falkland’s has created an environment that people want to be a part of. The facilities are modern with a feeling of playfulness, they encourage visitors and serving personnel to relax, eat, drink and meet.

The stretch tent and decked area is entirely new and really is an outdoor space you will never want to leave. Khai Khai 29 Queen St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 3UG Build

Khai Khai’s design offers informal spaces that allow relaxed interaction. Its style comes down to the brands history and the mixed influences of materials, intricately carved aesthetics, curious accessories and art. Khai Khai’s story is rooted in heritage. A big part of that tradition is sharing food and drinks with family and friends. The newly installed commercial kitchen allows Khai Khai to deliver an extraordinary culinary experience. Legendary dishes can be prepared over hot stones, coals and wood fires in the revolutionary and bespoke fitted josper or the age-old tandoor oven. In the dining area, different levels of seating using high chairs and divan style booths are combined with solid wood furniture for an authentic Indian interior style. Traditional Indian cabinets are a great combination of functionality and aesthetics. Embellished with inlay work using mirrors or metal, they serve as storage units too.

Accessories on the wall look like heirloom pieces which have been put to good use, they transport you to another place and time where they might have been used. In contrast, a neon light-up sign to the back of the room is an accent piece and adds a burst of colour which is a hallmark trait of Indian interior design. Overall, the transformation of this site has allowed Kha Khai to share their elemental cooking techniques which were perfected in villages and culinary hotspots across India, in an authentic and relaxed setting.
