We know the cold weather is not easy, but if you stick to these five pillars you’ll have the warmest, best winter imaginable in Chicago.

Nothing gives you that warm feeling inside quite like spending time with the ones you love. Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights (p.53) provides a perfect setting for just that. The zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland with two million lights, ice carvings, musical light shows, animal encounters, holiday crafts, and more. Just a touch south you can also head to Fifth Third Bank Winter Wonderfest (p.53) with 170,000 square feet of rides, a Chicago Blackhawks ice rink, and more family fun at Navy Pier (p.52).

While those who call Chicago home enjoy the return of the Christkindlmarket (p.53) each year, so do visitors from all over the world who come to visit this unique outdoor holiday market. As the market is a

Whether you’re looking to marvel at a grove of hemlock trees as their color transforms from green to technicolor hues or to take in a dazzling show of lights that appear to dance in the trees in time to music, it’s a must-see holiday destination.

I love going up to Skydeck (p.52) at the Willis Tower. On a clear day, I can see the glorious city skyline and even catch a glimpse of neighboring states. It is so liberating to step out on The Ledge, I feel like I am on top of the world! The Skydeck is the highest observation deck in Chicago and home to the highest public viewing area in the United States, so come visit this architectural masterpiece.

For Eric Loughlin, concierge at TheWit, it’s all about pho, a Vietnamese beef broth soup. “Those people who are telling you ramen is the best soup are no longer your friends,” he jokes. Pho comes standard with rice noodles, herbs, and your choice of meat. His recommendation is always the rare steak which will be cooked when placed in the hot broth. He suggests heading to Argyle Street in Uptown to get an authentic taste. His go-to in the area is Pho 888 (p.35) or Cafe Hoang (p.35).

DUMPLINGS

Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings (p.16) on Wentworth Avenue in Chinatown tops Kimpton Gray Hotel Concierge Miles Bertling’s list. He says you would literally have to fly to China to get something this authentic. The dumplings here are all handmade to order and come in a variety of styles and fillings. Bertling suggests pair-

There are burgers with tomatillo salsa and fried chiles, burgers with Sriracha and grilled pineapple, but if you have to choose just one, go for the signature Kuma Burger: bacon, sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a fried egg. It’s nothing short of burger perfection.

While Chicago’s known for its deep dish pizza, Benjamin Strawbridge, concierge at The Gwen, thinks you’d be remiss not to try the caramelized, melty cheese goodness that is Pequod’s (p.17) pan pizza. What makes it such a stand-out dish? It’s the layer of cheese that they put between the crust and the cast-iron pan it’s baked in that yields irresistibly crispy, blackened edges. Topped with their fennelflecked sausage? It can do no wrong.

4 NEW SPOTS TO QUENCH YOUR THIRST

Here’s a look at some of Chicago’s newest bars and lounges that are making big blips on concierges’ radars.

The Delta ïì

In a nod to the Beatnik era of the 1950s, this luxe lounge is a favorite of Hotel Palomar Concierge Mark Kraemer for its awesome mid-century vibe and standout cocktails. From bright and vegetal sippers to smooth, herbaceous cocktails and mocktails, Kraemer says it’s hard to go wrong.

Miles Bertling, concierge at The Kimpton Gray Hotel, also agrees. He recommends grabbing a seat on one of their plush couches and ordering a Deer Hunting in Paradise, a lovely concoction of amaro paired with passionfruit and garam masala.

For drinks that are as artfully prepared as the museum itself, Langham Chicago’s Chef Concierge Philippe Gills recommends bellying up to the bar in Marisol, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s new restaurant and lounge. The latest concept from Jason Hammel, the celebrated chef/owner of Lula Cafe in Logan Square, the drink menu here includes a variety of craft beers on tap and in bottles/cans, as well as wine, housemade cocktails, and a

vodka.” Not really that into Southern cooking? Loughlin suggests you dig into one of their signature tamales, especially their hot-tamale version of the South Side’s Jim Shoe sandwich (gyro-spiced beef and lamb topped with pastrami, sweet peppers, giardiniera, provolone, and their house sauce). INSIDER TIP: Loughlin says their burger is one of the best in the city. Hungry late? You're in luck, the kitchen here runs a late night menu all the way until 1 a.m. (and, yes, the burger is on it!).

Overwhelmingly, the concierge agree that this is the spot to go when the temps hit single digits. Bobbi Chiodo, chef concierge at the Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel, says that no matter how many times she goes, she always learns or sees something new and exciting. “I love it,” she adds.

Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago agrees. “I love getting transported to another world while roaming the galleries,” she says. Maggie Daley Park Skaters can experience “alpine in the city” as they lace up their ice skates and follow a path twice the length of a lap around a traditional skating rink. Andersonville The North Side neighborhood of Andersonville (drawing on its Swedish roots) carries out this traditional event along Clark Street. The candlelight procession kicks off at the Swedish American Museum. Look out for the specially chosen "Lucia Girls" leading the crowd.

Dressed in long white robes and adorned with beautiful crowns of candles, they sing "The Lucia Song" and invite children and adults to join in their walk. Afterwards, celebrate at the museum with family-friendly entertainment.
