Celebrate all types of encased meats Aug. 11-13 at the Chicago History Museum’s (p.46) Chicago Hot Dog Fest (p.50). The Chicago-style hot dog is the star of this family friendly festival, but get to know other styles along with a little history from speakers, fun from live bands, and activities for children all across three days. Byron’s Hot Dogs, Flashy Hot Dogs, Downtown Dogs, Chicago’s Dog House, and more will be providing their best hot dogs. Food and drinks are available for purchase using Dog Dollars. One normal dollar equals one Dog Dollar but you can purchase them at a 20-percent discount in advance. Feeling full?

Dance off some of the extra pounds with bands including the Polkaholics, Yoko & the Oh No’s, Funkadesi, and more.

Ever wish you could go back in time?

Well here’s your chance! Chicagoans looking for a blast from the past don’t need to look further than the Retro on Roscoe (p.50) festival happening Aug.11-13. In its 21st year, this music festival brings a blast from the past with live Chicago bands playing old-

ies and throwbacks on three stages across six blocks in Roscoe Village including 16 Candles with all the ‘80s hits, American English for your Beatles fix, and Cat Fight, the all-girl band that’s been dubbed “the darlings” of Chicago’s cover band scene. Roscoe Village’s top restaurants provide summer bites; and while the festival may not be on a Thursday, don’t let that stop you from posting #tbt retro pics of the 50 classic vehicles from the Antique Classic Car and Motorcycle show.

HIGH-FLYING FUN

As the summer comes to a close, the annual Chicago Air and Water Show (p.50) will be wrapping it up in style on Aug.19-20. Grab a spot along the water on North Avenue Beach (M6;A2) to watch the largest free show in the U.S., with air performances featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights. Work on your tan and take part in a great Chicago tradition, while soaking up the last of those summer rays.

Van Buren Streets on Aug.25-27 for the 28th Annual Taste of Greektown (p.50). With over ten participating Greektown restaurants, this festival blends old-world traditions with a modern twist beside live music from Greek bands and games for kids and families. Entertainment and gyros for all, opa!

GLOBAL RHYTHMS

While summer winds down, so will Chicago SummerDance (p.50), which will host its last event Sept. 14th. This summer dance festival has given Chicagoans live music and dance lessons on its 4,900-square-foot dance floor in the Spirit of Music garden at Grant Park (M6;F3) for the last 20 years. At its last event of the year, show off your Bollywood skills by learning how to Bhangra, and make the heat of summer last just a little longer.

HELLENIC PRIDE

Summer wouldn't be as sweet if you didn't stop into The Northman (p.18), Chicago's first cider bar. Located in the North Center neighborhood, this cider mecca can please even an experienced cocktail savant and its extensive array of offerings strike at the very core of cider lovers. Don’t forget to indulge in one of their fine whiskey selections or with Ploughman’s Platter, the perfect light bite for a small group.

The Driehaus Museum (p.46) is a hidden gem and one of the grandest residential buildings of the 19th century. If you’re looking for a museum that can be explored in a short amount of time, but still inspires by its beauty, this is it. Chicago-style hot dogs have become something of a legend—as they should be. So, where can you get the best one in town? While the answer may vary from person to person, neighborhood to neighborhood, John Dillon, concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, recommends the Chicago Dog from Chicago’s Dog House (p.16) in Lincoln Park (M7). Not planning to venture beyond downtown? Concierges’ also recommend Portillo’s (p.20) on Ontario Street for a great taste of the local food staple (and its convenient location).

No trip to Chicago would be complete without tasting an Italian Beef sandwich. Right up there with hot dogs and deep dish pizza in the Chicago food hall of fame, independent concierge Lynn Nealis is a firm believer that nowhere else in the country will you find one that remotely comes close to ours. Her favorite?

Al’s #1 Italian Beef (p.16) in Little Italy (M6;G1). Be sure to order it dipped (we also prefer ours with sweet and hot peppers). You’ll receive a pile of lovely, tender Italian meats dunked in a rich broth. After, head across the street and grab some Italian ice

at Mario’s Italian Lemonade, another Chicago summer favorite.

OLD SCHOOL SPOTS

Shannon Boland, chef concierge at LondonHouse Chicago, thinks you might recognize this Old Town (M7;O2) spot; it was transformed into O'Reilly's Italian Restaurant in the romantic comedy “Return to Me,” directed by Windy City native Bonnie Hunt. Although Twin Anchors (p.18) has been a favorite with the locals since 1932, numerous celebrities have dined here through the years, including Frank Sinatra who regular-

ly frequented the joint. Slow-cooked baby back ribs (get the zesty sauce!) with sides like pepper-jack creamed spinach are a must-try.

Boland also recommends Gene & Georgetti (p.19), a family-owned Italian steakhouse in River North that has been serving up oversized portions of steaks, chops, and Italian specialties since 1941. With its close proximity to the Merchandise Mart, you're likely to spot business types hobnobbing with the restaurant's loyal regulars, and you might even see a famous face as numerous celebrities have eaten here (and they have the photos to prove it).

NEW SCHOOL

While Judson Corrie, concierge at the Waldorf Astoria, is a fan of the classics, he’s also a firm believe that there is a new age of iconic foods to be found around town. If you want a more native diet, he recommends venturing over to Avec (p.34) where you will fall in love with their signature chorizo-stuffed medjool dates wrapped in bacon. They’ve become somewhat of a local legend and you’ll soon discover why for yourself.

And last, but certainly not least, we have to weigh in on deep dish pizza.

There are few cities who have built as strong of a reputation for great pizza as Chicago; after all, when they name a style after you, it’s clear you mean business. So who were the frontrunners when we posed the question to concierge? Lou Malnati’s (p.16) emerged victorious with Gino’s East (p.34) coming in a close second.

The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge (p.43) has been around since 1907, and was a favorite hangout joint for Al Capone and Frank Sinatra. Charlie Chaplin himself would also come in for a drink after working at nearby Essanay Studios. During Prohibition, the bar served as a gangster hangout and speakeasy. The door with a slit that would be opened for the “secret password” has been replaced with glass doors, but one can still feel the classic 1920s-30s bar style, with some cool historic features.

While the Map Room (p.40) is termed a “traveler’s tavern,” you won’t find it on a list of the usual tourist hotspots. Rather, this delightfully unique little bar is more often frequented by faces already familiar to the bar staff. Wooden bookcases throughout the place are lined Map Room î

with copies of National Geographic as well as travel atlases – and you’d need one for the long trip required to find a comparable beer selection elsewhere.

The Map Room offers over 200 brands from around the world, the products of 36 brewing styles, with 26 selections on tap, and even cask-conditioned ale served from a hand pump. A hand pump! Needless to say, this isn’t an average neighborhood bar; it’s an oasis for ale-lovers.

JUDSON CORRIE, CONCIERGE, WALDORF ASTORIA

After The Berghoff (p.38) opened in 1898 as a saloon, which admitted men only and sold Dortmunderstyle beer for a nickel a glass, this historic Chicago establishment has adapted over time into what is now a full-service restaurant serving German-American cuisine. With over a century spent battling the challenges posed by an ever-changing Windy City, The Berghoff was one of the few bars tough enough to survive Prohibition—serving soda pop and schnitzel in the place of liquor and ale—before getting back to business in 1933, obtaining Chicago’s very first post-Prohibition liquor license (which is proudly on display in the bar).

In 1934, the original Billy Goat Tavern (p.38) was purchased for just $205 (and the check bounced).

Today, it is a Chicago legend. When an escaped goat wandered into the little bar, owner William Sianis adopted the stray pet, grew a goatee, and named his new pub the Billy Goat Tavern. Originally located across the street from the old Chicago Stadium, the pub has always been a favorite among sports fans, even after it moved to its new location in 1964.

Until last year’s World Series, Cubs fans still harbored an old a grudge with Sianis, the assumed source of the Cubs’ curse, having told off owner P.K. Wrigley for not letting his goat in to watch the game, yelling those “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more!” While Billy Goat Tavern has grown immensely, with eight Chicago locations now serving those special cheezborgers, Hohs recommends a trip to the original pub for a burger, a brew, and a taste of the historic Chicago experience.

Whether you’re a first time visitor or know how to order a Chicagostyle hot dog like a pro, Chicago still has so much to see and do. We polled the concierge community and got an insiders take on all of the “must-do” places to visit or revisit.

DELVE INTO HISTORY

For the architecture buff, Lynn Nealis, an independent concierge, recommends Chicago Line Cruises (p.56). Known for its lake and river cruises, Chicago Line provides in-depth information on Chicago, its history, and its stunning architecture. The 28th annual Festival de La Villita is part of the Fiestas Patrias family of patriotic holidays held each year in Mexico. This fest specifically celebrates Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule in September of 1810. It’s also a celebration of families. Festival de La Villita (aka Little Village Fest) offers something for everyone: top local and regional music entertainment, food, carnival rides, and more. In addition, on Sunday afternoon the fest is the end location of the neighborhood’s popular annual happening that is the 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade.
