If you’re able to take part in all these events then your Chicago winter trip will be remembered less by the temperature and more by warm memories.

LIONS, TIGERS, AND ICE SKATING, OH MY

Nothing gives you that warm feeling inside than spending time with the ones you love. Lincoln Park Zoo’s Zoolights (p.54) provides the perfect setting for just that. Through Jan. 3 the zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland with two million lights, ice carvings, musical light shows, animal encounters, ice skating, holiday crafts, and more. The adults can also enjoy warm-spiced wine and beer while the kids enjoy the carousel and train adventure.

SKETCH COMEDY CAPITAL

As a city with comedy institutions like The Second City, iO, and ComedySportz sketch comedy groups jump at the opportunity to perform at the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival (p.54). With over 10,000 guests and

hundreds of groups performing this festival dwarfs all comedy festivals.

Farmhouse Chicago (p.35) is one of Chicago’s finest farm-to-table restaurants.

With a craft beer list that features a plethora of hard-to-find local brews and a cocktail list inspired by topics from literature to music, deciding on a drink is rather difficult!

Their menu is always rotating, but the top picks at the moment are their rainbow trout fish fry with a side of heirloom beans.

Hash House A Go-Go (p.18) has a very sleek, urban look and is nestled in the heart of the Gold Coast. They have an amazing dish called Andy’s Sage Fried Chicken Benedict.

It is enough to put you down for a nice winter’s nap. I don't know if I'm obsessed with sage, but the Big O’ Sage Fried Chicken & Waffle Tower is the best rendition of chicken and waffles I've ever had.

Named after casual corner eateries found in Spain, La Taberna highlights various flavors from Latin America, Mexico, Spain's Basque region and inspirations from the Mediterranean. The datiles, croquetas de pollo, and vieras salteadas are absolutely delectable and not to be missed.

Named one of Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants for 2013," Embeya (p.38) quickly became one of Chicago’s “restaurants-of-the-moment” celebrated for its refined Asian cuisine and its dashing atmosphere. Now helmed by nationally-acclaimed chef Mike Sheerin, the menu has been creatively re-tooled, and showcases dishes based on a range of Asian ingredients, flavors, and textures integrated with French technique.

Must-try dishes include Sheerin’s Smoked scallops with pickled turmeric and smoked walnut and the delectable Peking duck, slowroasted with blood-orange hoisin glaze, on sweet pea purée.

If you’re in town on Thursday, Jan. 14, make sure to snag a reservation for the second Spice Route Dinner Series with guest chef Paul Virant of Perennial Virant, Vie, and Vistro.

Joining forces in the kitchen, the five-course family-style tasting menu, which will showcase 15 - 18 dishes all together, curated by Chefs Sheerin and Virant will incorporate flavors from their respective restaurants’ cuisines.

Part dive bar and part taqueria, Big Star (p.18) is a honky-tonk serving up inexpensive, approachable, and excellent food and drink in the center of Wicker Park. Led by James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Kahan, Big Star offers gussied-up Mexican street food—walking taco, anyone?— with the motto aqui vendemos sabor or “here we sell deliciousness”. And, folks, they do. While wildly popular during the warmer months for its spacious patio, Big Star is just as delightful when experienced indoors and is the perfect, low key respite to stave off winter’s chill.

Also from the talents behind Big Star, Paul Kahan’s Nico Osteria (p.18) takes coastal Italian fare to a whole new level. Located in the Gold Coast’s (M6;A2) Thompson Hotel, this hot spot brings authentically Italian seafood and housemade pastas together with inventive pasties and desserts in a rustic, chic environment. While the menu changes daily to best showcase the pristine product, standout items range from lobster lasagnette with Swiss chard, tomato, and crème fraiche to the extensive crudo offerings that would be the envy of any sushi restaurant in town.

A tapas-style restaurant, the Purple Pig’s (p.20) tagline is “cheese, swine, and wine” and delivers on all counts.

The small-plate, Mediterranean cuisine from Jimmy Bannos Jr. ranges from their house-made charcuterie and antipasto options like pork fried almonds with rosemary and garlic (they’re addicting!) to smears such as their house-cured lardo iberico.

CHICAGO'S BEST DANCE PARTIES

It may be chilly outside, but these underground dance parties will have you burning up the dance floor.

GET SOULFUL

Established in 2008, Windy City Soul Club (p.46) is one of Chicago’s longestrunning northern soul dance parties.

Spinning the best up-beat, Motown-y sounds in town, their DJs play all original vinyl from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Most of the music comes from local or Midwestern artists, with a majority of the albums produced right here The Hideout ï

Fizz Bar and Grill ì

in Chicago. This dance club’s monthly home is at The Empty Bottle (p.46), in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood, where they set up shop one Saturday night every month except for their annual New Year’s Eve party, which takes place at the Logan Square Auditorium (p.46). It’s best to arrive early—preferably before 10 p.m.—and make sure to bring cash, as the Empty Bottle doesn’t accept cards.

LATE-NIGHT DANCE PARTY

The Hideout (p.46) has been around since 1934, tucked away on a quiet street in the center of the industrial corridor along the North Branch of the Chicago River. In its early days, The Hideout was ran by bootleggers and gamblers. Today, it is home to the Malt Shop (p.46), one of my favorite dance parties in the city. On a snowy Christmas Eve in 1983, the operator of the Music Box Theatre decided to show two old holiday movies and sing a few Christmas carols during the intermission. Now, 32 years later, the Music Box Christmas Sing-A-Long & Double Feature (p.50) has become an extravaganza (Dec. 11-25) with people from all around Chicagoland having made this old-fashioned event part of their holiday tradition. Each year, revelers are greeted by none other than Santa Claus who welcome the audience and, accompanied by the theater organist, leads them in the singing of the most cherished Christmas carols of all time before taking in screenings of "White Christmas" or cheering for Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey during a showing of "It’s a Wonderful Life."

The Charles Dickens classic "A Christmas Carol" at the Goodman Theatre (p.55) is an ongoing tradition during the holidays in Chicago. The story, set in 19th-century England, follows the prominent Ebenezer Scrooge who receives unexpected visits from past, present, and future ghosts who convince him to change

Stage 773’s (p.55) hilarious holiday cavalcade "It’s a Wonderful Santaland Miracle, Nut Cracking Christmas Story... Jews Welcome!" is a familyfriendly, interactive show featuring familiar Christmas carols, original musical numbers, dance, sketch comedy, puppets, and everything in-between. Stage 773 puts their twist on the traditional holiday show, packing the world’s most beloved stories and traditions into one extravagant event. The show runs through Dec. 27.

The Museum’s Main Floor dazzles with 50, 12-foot trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities representing their diverse culture and holiday traditions. Each year, the display highlights the traditions of the Chinese New Year, Diwali (a Hindu and Sikh festival), Kwanzaa (celebrated by African Americans), Ramadan (celebrated

by Muslims), Hanukkah (a Jewish holiday), Visakha Puja Day (a Buddhist holiday), and St. Lucia Day (a Swedish tradition). The celebrations run through Jan. 3.
