New Mexico traditions illuminate the land

New Mexico is a land of enchanting traditions and beauty year-round, but much of the state’s rich heritage relates to life around the holidays.

One of New Mexico’s trademark holiday decorations takes the form of luminarias, or farolitos, depending on what part of the state you’re from. Consisting of sand and a candle in a brown paper bag, these decorations are common all over the state and offer a unique holiday style that is not commonly seen outside of the Land of Enchantment.

UNM’s annual “Hanging of the Greens,” which typically features more than 14,000 luminarias set up around campus, is one of the largest displays of luminarias in Albuquerque. This year, festivities at UNM will take place on Dec. 4 and will include lighting of the luminarias around campus, caroling and the annual lighting of “The U” at Hodgin Hall Alumni Center.

The city is also famous for its annual Christmas Eve Luminaria Tour. The tour can be experienced by taking an ABQ Ride bus or by walking, and consists of looking at luminarias placed throughout neighborhoods in downtown and Old Town Albuquerque.

For those taking public transportation, six tours will be given throughout the evening and will begin at the Convention Center. Tickets for the event go on sale Friday.

Although not funded or sponsored by the city, the Lee

Acres neighborhood in northwest Albuquerque is also notorious for featuring large numbers of luminarias along the roads, sidewalks and roofs of homes.

The Lee Acres community can be found off of Fourth Street and Solar Road, and is a popular place to witness a road lit only by the glow of luminarias.

For those who don’t live in the Albuquerque area, luminarias are widely celebrated in the rest of the state as well. According to newmexico.org, other holidaythemed celebrations around the state include Santa Fe’s Farolito Walk on Canyon Road, Elephant Butte’s Luminaria Beach Walk and Floating Parade of Lights, and the Christmas Luminaria Tour at the Enchanted Forest in Red River.

The River of Lights is another favorite activity of New Mexicans throughout the holiday season.

Taking place at the BioPark every winter, the River of Lights is the largest walk-through holiday light show in the state, consisting of over 500 light sculptures, as well as live music from local artists and holiday-themed arts & crafts activities, according to the City of Albuquerque. This year the River of Lights will begin on Saturday and run through Jan. 2.

Along with the state’s uniquely themed activities and decorations, New Mexican cuisine is always something to look forward to around the holidays.

by New Mexican restaurants and families alike during the colder months. Biscochitos, which are lard-based sugar cookies usually topped with cinnamon, were even named New Mexico’s official cookie in 1989.

Skiing and snowboarding are not uniquely New Mexican activities, but the state does offer some of the best places

in the country to take part in these winter activities. Out of 220 North American ski resorts that were evaluated, ZRankings ranked Taos Ski Valley 21st on the list, with Ski Santa Fe the next best ski resort in New Mexico, coming in at 69th. According to onthesnow.com, a website that ranks ski resorts by state based off of customer reviews, the other top winter sport destinations in the state include Angel Fire

Resort, Pajarito Mountain Ski and Ski Apache.

From chile ristras hanging up in Old Town Albuquerque to Christmas parades in Aztec, the Land of Enchantment offers New Mexicans a unique charm that can only be felt in the state around the holidays.

St. Martin’s offers food, shelter, opportunity

For a lot of people, the crisp autumn mornings are a friendly reminder that the holiday season is just around the corner. But for others, the falling leaves are a reminder of the harsh winter months to come.

According to data from the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, in 2013 there were almost 1,200 homeless people in Albuquerque. This number fell by more than 800 people after 2009, but there’s still work to be done.

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Library lists 11 homeless shelters in the area. One of these is the St. Martin’s Hospitality Center.

Although it’s only a day shelter, St. Martin’s offers several essential services such as showers, clothing and full meals Monday through Friday. There’s also a behavioral health program and a job training program.

Some clients only show up once or twice, while others come on a regular basis. A Texas man who refers

to himself as “Billy” is one of those regulars. Billy has spent 22 years of his life traveling the country. He gets rides whenever he can, never stressing out too much about when or where he is going next.

He said when he first got to St. Martin’s back in May, he got off on the wrong foot by having some issues with a security guard.

“I walked away from it, of course, and I decided to keep coming back,” he said.

His relationship with the staff eventually improved, and he decided to start helping to keep himself out of trouble.

“It don’t bother me. It gives me something to do,” he said.

With no special plans for the holidays, Billy said he will help at St. Martin’s or any other shelter that may be short-staffed. He said that by volunteering, he is not just helping others, he is also helping himself.

Lisa Nelson and Patricia Chavez are two volunteers who think the same way as Billy. They both describe the experience of volunteering as “rewarding.”

Nelson and Chavez organize donated clothes and help with distribution. One of St. Martin’s main goals is to help people maintain their dignity, so helping clients to look presentable is important.

Chavez said it’s not uncommon for someone who received clothes one day to come back the next day with nothing, because people often get beaten on the street and have their possessions stolen.

“Their shoes are taken, their socks are taken. Sometimes their pants are taken,” she said.

Billy said someone stole his ID, so now he is working on getting a new one.

Chavez talked about how saddened she was to see “evil people” hurting others, but that it unfortunately happens often.

“They see people that are vulnerable, and they just take advantage of them,” Nelson added.

Chavez said this is the reason that places like St. Martin’s exist in the first place: to assists those who need a helping hand.

so he does his best to pay it forward.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” he said.

“Love all. Don’t hate no one. Be there for one another. Be friends.

Be their comfort if they need it.

That’s what I try to do.”

College of Education gives gift of literacy

In recent years the UNM College of Education has found a way to spread holiday cheer by giving students new reading material.

Since 2011, the Center for Student Success has teamed up with the GSLA for an annual book drive, offering new and gently used books to K-12 students in the community.

The “2015 Book Fiesta” has enticed donors by planting giant bins across campus for anyone willing to donate reading materials.

Associate Dean Deborah Rifenbary said the book drive began as a way to say thank-you to the cooperating teachers who have supported, supervised and helped the college grow.

“The thought process was: how can we give back to the community?

How can we give to the cooperating teachers who have worked with our students, who have helped created a relationship between the college and the community?” Rifenbary said.

“What can we do that is not only beneficial to those teachers, but the students in their classrooms?”

Since 2011, the CoE documented more than 1,000 books donated to more than 125 teachers and classrooms.

“The most logical thing was, let’s do something around reading and books,” Rifenbary said. “Let’s get the kids excited about having outside people come to read to them and get them excited about books.”

The 2015 book drive is running toward the end of the two-and-ahalf-month donation period that began on Oct. 5 and ends Dec. 20, just before the college shuts down for Winter Break.

UNM Graduate Student Leader Alliance President Katrina Edelmann said the drive is on pace to surpass the number of book donations from the previous four drives in 2015 alone.

“We’re really hitting the social media really hard,” Edelmann said.

“GSLA in particular, which has primarily taken responsibility for it the past couple of years.”

GSLA, recently changed from GPSA to avoid confusion with the university wide Graduate and Professional Student Association, has found a lot of success by using television monitors in the CoE, emails

and social media posts to generate interest from people in the college.

Rifenbary and Edelmann said the bins are being filled with reading materials for all age groups — and it’s a healthy amount of donations at that.

Picture books, young adult literature and even classics have found their

way into the bins, appealing to the vast range of cooperating teachers who the CoE hopes to reach.

Rifenbary said that after the books are sorted by age group, the cooperating teachers to whom the books are donated are selected arbitrarily to receive the reading

materials for their students.

“The teachers’ names are drawn at random, and their classrooms are presented with backpacks full of books,” Rifenbary said. “Last year there were 35 classrooms with over 500 books.”

Rifenbary said the near-threemonths donation period will reward the classrooms in late January and early February.

“It’s super important for kids who don’t normally have access to reading materials — what we call ‘literacy opportunities’ — at home, to receive a large array and diversity of reading materials,” Edelmann said.

The GSLA leader said representatives from each of the CoE departments have helped her tremendously in her first year as president. She said each representative will help her with the sorting and distribution process across the schools.

“We’re very grateful as a college to be getting so many donations,” Edelmann said.

Gifts you might just want to give yourself

Imagine eating a small lava cake from a mason jar while enjoying a fizzy scented bath and drinking hot chocolate from a personalized mug.

How does one achieve this awesome fantasy? Simple: Make all of this year’s Christmas/ Hanukkah/Gift-Giving-Holiday gifts yourself, and then keep the leftover gift materials to make your own.

Most college students aren’t exactly swimming in money with all the time in the world on their hands, which is why many are starting to stress about how they’re going to afford gifts for everyone this holiday season.

For those who have long “nice” lists this year, here are five ideas for gifts you can make in bulk (and use the rest to make for yourself ).

Bath bombs

Who doesn’t love a relaxing, fizzy bath? With a combination of online and Walmart shopping, you can get the necessary ingredients for about $25. Citric acid is the only thing you will need to buy online if you want to get a large amount at a cheaper price. For last-minute shopping, citric acid is available at Natural Grocers stores, but it costs more there.

What you’ll need: 1. Twenty-four-cavity minimuffin pan 2. Citric acid 3. Baking soda 4. Witch hazel 5. Fragrance oil 6.

(Optional) Non-water based liquid colorant These ingredients are all you need to make fragrant and relaxing bath bombs for bath-loving friends and family members to enjoy. If you put a little extra cash into some tulle and rib-

bon, you can package them nicely, too. If you give two or three bombs to each person, one batch will make enough for 8-12 people. That’s less than four dollars per person.

Here’s a basic run-down on making one batch of 24 bombs: 1. Pour 2 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of citric acid into bowl.

Work out any clumps in the powder by mixing.

2. Add fragrance oil. The more you add, the stronger the scent of the bombs.

3. Thoroughly mix oil into the powder.

4. (Optional) Add non-waterbased liquid colorant and mix.

Keep in mind that if you add too much, it will color the bath water when used.

5. Spray the entire mixture with witch hazel as needed, until a clump of it will retain a mold of your fingers when squeezed in your hand.

6. Put the mixture in your mini-muffin pan. Make sure to pack each mold tightly with as much mixture as you can press into it. This will keep your bomb together.

7. Let bombs sit in pan for 10 minutes.

8. Carefully turn pan over and gently tap bombs out.

9. Let sit overnight to completely dry.

Picture Coasters

These personal gifts are timeconsuming to make, but you can make a ton at once for about $30 (plus tax). These thoughtful gifts will do more than show your loved ones how much you care: the waterproof coasters will also protect their furniture from water damage. It doesn’t get better than a gift that’s both personal and functional.

What you’ll need: 1. Eight-ounce bottle of Mod Podge 2. Two foam brushes 3. Acrylic sealer 4. Sticky felt 5. Two 9-packs of 4-by-4inch natural stone tiles (price

may vary depending on the tiles you choose).

6. Eighteen printed pictures These ingredients are enough to make a personalized coaster for 18 people. If you have a color printer, you can print all the photos you want to use on photo paper, or you can get all of your pictures copied at a FedEx office for just a few dollars.

Basic instructions: 1. Cut pictures into 4-by-4inch squares.

2. Coat tile in a layer of Mod Podge.

3. Press picture onto tile. Let Mod Podge dry for 20 minutes.

4. Coat top of picture with Mod Podge. Let dry for 20 minutes.

5. Add final coat of Mod Podge.

6. Cut sticky felt into four 1-by-1-inch squares.

7. Stick felt squares on each corner of bottom of coaster. If you don’t use sticky felt, you can use hot glue and regular felt instead.

8. Spray completed tiles with acrylic sealant after Mod Podge has dried for 20 minutes, and let dry for as long as sealant can recommends.

3. Spoon small amounts of dry brownie mix to coat inside of cup. Tap any excess on inside back into mixing bowl.

4. Add water, eggs and oil to separate bowl and whisk until combined.

5. Pour mixture in brownie mix and stir for well-mixed brownie batter.

6. Spoon batter into each custard cup until each one is half full. This should take around 1/3 cup of batter for each cup.

7. Stack two Dove chocolates and press them into the center of the batter in each cup.

8. Cover surface of candy with batter using a knife.

At this point, you can give the batter in the cup to someone with instructions on how to cook it (batter is good for a week with refrigeration), or cook them up on the day of giving and distribute them to those receiving them.

To cook: 1. Place four cakes on a plate and microwave on high for two minutes and 30 seconds. This time is given for an 1100-watt microwave.

Custard Cup Lava Cakes

Personalized Sharpie Mugs

These yummy gifts cook in the microwave in one minute, and one family-sized box of brownie mix makes enough cakes for eight people for about $30 – less than four dollars per person.

What you’ll need: 1. Eight 6-ounce custard cups (with lids) 2. Three eggs 3. Oil 4. Cooking spray 5. One family-sized box of Pillsbury chocolate fudge brownie mix 6. One bag of Dove dark chocolate promises.

The most expensive part is the $13-plus shipping on Amazon for eight custard cups. This gift is the perfect treat for chocolate lovers this holiday season.

Basic Instructions: 1. Pour brownie mix in bowl and whisk out clumps.

2. Spray each custard cup with cooking spray.

This gift is perfect for the many college students who seem to live off of coffee. If you’re artistic, you can draw fancy designs and patterns into your mugs and make them that much more personal. If you feel your drawing talent is equal to that of a toddler, you can opt to outline and polka dot the sharpie around the letter stickers to make a fun monogrammed mug. Just make sure you let the person you’re giving it to know it’s hand-wash only.

What you’ll need: 1. Plain, white mugs (You can buy a case of 24 plain, white stoneware mugs from deals.com for $24 plus shipping).

2. A pack of letter stickers 3. Sharpies 4. A working oven Basic instructions for polka dot monogramming: 1. Stick letter stickers on mug.

2. Poke sharpie all around letters until satisfied with dot cloud

surrounding it. Be sure to poke all around the outline of the sticker, or the shape will be lost when the sticker is removed.

3. Remove the stickers.

4. Bake mug in oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool completely before washing or using.

If your budget is really tight and you’re looking for a small gift for everyone, these festive little treats are the perfect idea.

However, what you save in money you pay for with time.

After watching an 11-minute tutorial from someone who is experienced making these, one can estimate about 30 minutes of time for each Christmas tree.

But when you’re finished, you have an adorable little cardstock Christmas tree decorated with Hershey’s Kiss ornaments and a Rolo tree trunk.

You can even add stars or bows to the top to give your trees a little extra finesse. Alternatively, you can also find a six-point and five-point Hershey’s star if you’re making gifts for a different holiday on the Qbee’s Quest website. These little treats are perfect for making a bulk gift for all the candy lovers in the family.

What you’ll need: 1. Cardstock 2. A ruler 3. A scoring stick 4. Glue (not the kid kind) 5. A bag of Hershey’s Kisses 6. A pack of Rolos This is a very specific tutorial with a lot of specific instructions.

Minor gift ideas for your major supporters A student’s major might be a major clue in determining their ideal presents

By Fin Martinez Late November: the tail end of the semester where finals, cold weather and winter break leave students on the brink of stress-induced insanity. The relief of the holidays comes to students after final exams that, in some cases, could not have been passed without the assistance of friends and family.

A binge session of Netflix or a drink or two for those of legal age sometimes isn’t enough to fully show appreciation for the presence and deeds of those friends.

Oftentimes friends aren’t shown the appreciation they deserve, they provide company, they help you move, they help you out with flashcards for quiz terms, and between the late nights and the long study sessions they stick around for better or for worse.

In the spirit of the season gifts are given to friends as a gesture of appreciation and celebration, but sometimes a gift card to Satellite or the movies just doesn’t cut it.

College is a place of education, where one learns the ropes of the professional field they hope to enter.

In the spirit of the season and the environment, here are a few gift suggestions for different majors.

Business and management

It’s not in many students’ budgets to buy a tailored suit, the uniform of the profession; but small items could mean just at much.

Business cards: Networking is essential in any field, and many job opportunities can be obtained through a good impression, but turning that encounter into a possible job offer requires a way to be contacted. Business cards are a good way to exchange contact info without having to go through the process of exchanging numbers with a cell phone — it’s just a simple trade instead of a sometimes-frustrating process. Business cards are quick, easy and good to have around at a conference.

of the recipient with the card’s design is guaranteed, however.

Psychology

The study of the mind is a popular major on many college campuses, and psychology degrees have the potential to be applied in a wide array of fields.

Depending on the recipient’s focus, the latest version of the DSM might not be best idea, despite its affordability. These gifts are a good substitute.

A book on their favorite topic: This suggestion almost goes without mention. The gift of a book on the recipient’s favorite or particular focus in psychology shows interest in the recipient’s field of study and what they found a passion for. Giving them a book on the subject also provides them with the opportunity to see other viewpoints on the subject, and maybe a new-found appreciation for their focus.

In terms of the price of the book, it can range depending on the popularity, its availability and

how recently it was published.

Checking a number of sellers is a good way of finding a good deal.

Nursing

Pursuing a degree in the medical field is a guarantee of stress and difficult coursework. Often what isn’t understood is the amount of work it takes to become a nurse, especially when the University’s medical school is ranked among the best in the nation. These gifts would be good for friends in Nursing.

A massage: In all seriousness, a massage would be a good gift for a medical student. Stress has negative health consequences, and the amount of work that goes into a nursing degree produces stress. Massages reduce stress with a relaxing environment, and the stimulation of bodily pressure points adds to the experience. Avoid the frantic shoppers and corporate products to support those closest to you. Give your loved ones the gift of New Mexico’s best. Here are some gift ideas that reflect the best our beautiful state has to offer, while also supporting the local culture.

Red or green? Corn or flour?

One of the greatest things about

the Land of Enchantment is the food.

It could be green/red chile, corn/flour tortillas, tamales, salsa, beef jerky, and the list goes on. Every single one of these things is made in our own backyard and sold by local people. Whether it’s Sadie’s salsa, Frontier tortillas or Hatch green chile, keep your wellspent money within state lines this year while filling your family’s bellies with goodness. Hey, if you’re lucky, maybe they’ll even share.

It’s that time of year again, ladies and gentlemen. The holiday season is upon us. Now, regardless of what everyone believes, this time of the year is definitely the best time to pick something up. There are deals galore, especially with Black Friday right around the corner. It’s getting cold outside ... so what’s there better to do than sit down inside and play some video games?

PlayStation 4 with ‘Uncharted Collection’

GameStop — yes, GameStop — is running a Black Friday deal that looks sweet to anyone who lays eyes on it. They plan on selling the

Food banks, churches hope no one goes hungry

With Thanksgiving just a day away, the Roadrunner Food Bank is working to distribute food to a variety of organizations around Albuquerque in the hope that no one goes hungry. Here are some places welcoming the homeless and anyone else in need of a meal.

Joy Junction, 4500 Second Street SW, is providing a traditional Thanksgiving meal on November 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Up to 1500 people can be seated. A meal will also be served at the shelter from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Lifeline of Hope mobile food truck is stopping at eight

locations on Thanksgiving Day from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., including the Transgender Center, Los Altos Park and the Tewa Motor Lodge.

The Salvation Army is serving a Thanksgiving meal at its church location, 501 Broadway Blvd. SE from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. About 800 to 1200 people are expected to attend.

The Salvation Army is also asking for volunteers and toy donations for the Christmas Angel program.

McDonald’s Restaurant, 1390 Rio Rancho Blvd. SE, is serving a meal on Thanksgiving Day from 11 am. to 2 p.m. The restaurant has been working with St. Felix Food Pantry for more than 10 years to distribute food.

La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper Ave. NE, is providing a “Feast of Hope” Thanksgiving

Day meal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition, its clothing bank will open at 10 a.m. and craftrelated activities are provided for the children. Anyone wishing to volunteer can walk in between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. to help open canned goods. Turkeys, ham, packages of individual juice boxes, cakes or pies are acceptable donations.

Project Share, one of several programs of St. Martin’s Hospitality Center, serves about 40,000 meals to the hungry each year. Some still have a full season ahead; others are planning recruiting trips around the country; and a few of them are concerned about their jobs.

A new car or suit may keep their spirits up for a day or two, but that’s not the gift that keeps their hopes high.

The only cure-all for coaches is winning. Thus, the best gifts that coaches can receive around the holidays are ones that they give themselves.

Unfortunately for Davie, his

wildest and very real Christmas dream of getting the Lobos to the Mountain West Championship game ended with Saturday’s loss to Colorado State.

However, there are still other ways Davie can make history this holiday season.

If UNM is able to upset Air Force this coming Saturday, the Lobos will clinch a winning record for the first time since 2007. The Lobos will also have a shot at earning the school’s first bowl victory in nearly a decade.

Davie did enough this season to earn the benefit of the doubt for a couple of seasons. His job security isn’t in question after some of the biggest upsets in program history.

The Nov. 14 win at Boise State will be talked about for years to come, and might be considered the turning point for the football program.

Yvonne Sanchez

A year after Sanchez’s job was in jeopardy, she was able to turn the program around and garner second-place finishes in both the regular season and the Mountain West Tournament.

The Lobos’ aspirations are set higher this year after their recent success, and they’ve been picked to finish second in the conference behind Colorado State, who won the Mountain West title last season.

Sanchez boasts a deep squad that is led by one of best post players in conference in

Khadijah Shumpert.

There’s also the matter of UNM’s winning streak at home, which will reach 15 games with a win against Nicholls State.

It’s amazing the turnaround Sanchez has performed with this program. She went from worrying whether she was in her last year as head coach to earning a well-deserved extension.

Craig Neal

After one of the worst seasons in recent memory, Neal is trying to bring back UNM’s winning ways.

Probably the gift Neal wants the most this year — besides winning — is a healthy team.

UNM had to deal with the unfortunate news of Devon

Williams career-ending condition earlier this season, but overall the team has been healthy.

UNM is also still in the early processes of coming together as a team. That was apparent in the Lobos’ first loss of the season at USC on Saturday.

When the team chemistry comes along, there shouldn’t be any reason for UNM not to contend.

The key for that to happen is health, and after last season’s slew of injuries, the law of averages should favor the Lobos to stay injury-free this year.

Toy, food drives make holidays for the needy

Perhaps Saint Francis of Assisi was right when he said that when people give, they also receive something in return.

At least, that sentiment resonates for Valarie Sheffey, a junior computer science major.

“None of us was born in a bubble,” she said. “Our communities shape us into the adults we are now and give us opportunities. It is only natural we show gratitude by returning the favor.”

Sheffey is a board member for two community-service-oriented clubs on campus: she is the bulletin editor of Circle K International (UNM CKI) and treasurer of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

Apart from volunteering at a slew of other community service projects, she assisted with the Crossroads for Women Thanksgiving Meal this semester and plans on participating in bell ringing for the Salvation Army in December, and welcomes anyone else interested. Sheffey encourages students to go to unmcki.org and the UNM NSBE Facebook page for more information on how to get involved.

For people like Sheffey who enjoy giving back to the community, here are a few more volunteer opportunities happening this holiday season to help get started.

Toys for Tots

Two years ago, Toys for Tots re-

ceived a plate of cookies and card from a child who was very appreciative of the group’s mission. The card explained that his mother was surprised at the program’s generosity, as she struggled to provide for him and his younger brother and would now have one less thing to worry about during Christmas.

“This note touched (us) all. This is the reason so many come back to volunteer,” Toys for Tots Registration Coordinator Michelle Sena said.

This year the organization will be distributing toys on Dec. 11 and 12 at the Hobby Lobby on Wyoming Boulevard near Montgomery Boulevard from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

During the distribution, children and families come together to choose and collect toys.

Registration dates are on Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Alamosa Community Center and on Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Cesar Chavez Community Center.

Apart from assistance at the toy distribution, Sena said Toys for Tots would appreciate volunteer assistance during the toy pick-up, setup and cleanup, all being held during the first half of December.

“It’s not about the toys; it’s about (bringing) us together as a community during the holidays,” Sena said. “Many families struggle to pay the bills. With this program, these parents don’t have to worry about providing a nice Christmas for their children.”

Joy Junction

Joy Junction is a church ministry that offers emergency and short-term necessities to Albuquerque’s homeless women, children and families. This faithbased organization provides its guests spiritual and emotional support, as well as food, counseling, shelter, clothing and transportation services.

This Thanksgiving and Christmas, Joy Junction will be hosting Holiday Feasts and encourages the community to make a donation or volunteer.

The Thanksgiving Feast will be held Nov. 25 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Nov. 26 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the 4500 Second St. SW Joy Junction location.

The Christmas Feast will be held on Dec. 21 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The Pre-Christmas Meal will be held on Dec. 22 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Second St. location mentioned above.

The Traditional Christmas Dinner will be held Dec. 25 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., also at the Second St. location.

Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico serves more than 350 children across its six branches. This year, the group will be holding a Toy Drive for kids and an “Adopt a Family” event. There will also be a Club Donation Wish List for the Clubs.

The Toy Drive requests that donors give new, unwrapped toys for children between the ages of five and 18. It is running now through Dec. 14. Donations can be dropped off at the Seligman Branch at 3333 Truman St. NE in Albuquerque or at the Schumann Branch at 4600 Sundt Road NE in Rio Rancho between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The “Adopt a Family” event provides food, clothing and gifts to

families in need. It is running now through Dec. 23; however, the last day to request a family is Dec. 18.

Donations should be delivered by Dec. 23 to the Administrative Office at the Truman St. location mentioned above.

All of the clubs will be supported via donations to the Club Donation Wish List, which includes specific items the Clubs need to provide a positive environment and strong programs for their children. The Wish List is an ongoing project and can be found at bgccnm.org, as donations are needed and accepted year-round.

These may also be delivered to the Truman St. location.

“We encourage donations and volunteers from the entire community ... At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico, we strive to give kids of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho the Gift of a Great Future,” said Development Coordinator of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico Sharlene Argyres. “We can’t do that alone.

We are a not-for-profit organization, and we rely on donations and sponsorships from our community in order to provide a safe, fun, healthy and educational environment to kids.”
