Site: Muslim groups make UNM ‘terror-friendly’

By David Lynch An American watchdog website has listed UNM as one of the top 10 “terrorist-friendly” universities nationwide — a claim that some on campus are calling unfounded and illegitimate.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center wrote the article for stopthejihadoncampus.org, stating that two national student groups — the Muslim Students Association and Students for Justice in Palestine — are being supported by universities in their efforts to allegedly “spread the propaganda lies of the terrorist organization Hamas, and to demonize the Jewish state” through events.

But Masood Mirza, president of the Muslim Students Association at UNM, said the group’s goals are leaning in the opposite direction.

“In terms of what he’s written, all of his allegations are absolutely incorrect: the MSA’s offered to open its books to anybody who’s interested,” Mirza said. “We don’t receive any money from any terrorist organization ... and we strongly condemn all the acts (of terrorism) that have been happening.”

Following the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Lebanon, the MSA issued a statement on its Facebook page stating its opposition to those involved, and reaffirming that “this is not the true

way of Islam, or any faith, or the direction of the human being.”

Emile Nakhleh, coordinator for National Security Programs at UNM, also called the article false, grounded in narrow ideological perspective and not based on any legitimate evidence.

As a matter of fact, Nakhleh said that because of UNM’s close proximity to the Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs, the institution should be considered a national security university.

“In all candor, the author of the blog accusing UNM of being friendly to terrorism doesn’t know what he is talking about.

The so-called supporting evidence is a series of lectures and student activities that have called for justice and human dignity,” he said. “There is nothing radical or extremist about these activities.”

Nakhleh went on to say that the article’s claims are “at best disingenuous, and at worst malicious.”

As it pertains to UNM, the article specifically claims SJP events, as well as an anti-Islamophobia resolution passed by the Associated Students of UNM in the spring, as promoting a terrorist-affiliated agenda.

According to its website, the

David Horowitz Freedom Center seeks to “combat the efforts of the radical left and its Islamist allies to destroy American values and disarm this country as it attempts to defend itself in a time of terror.” Mirza said that the Center probably didn’t do much research before writing the article.

“What I’m assuming the writer did ... was he simply went on Google, typed in ‘SJP’ and ‘MSA’, and whatever universities have both (organizations), he said, ‘Oh, these are terror-friendly universities,” Mirza said.

The other universities on the list are Brandeis, Columbia, Harvard, Rutgers - New Brunswick, San Francisco State, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego and the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.

Representatives at the David Horowitz Freedom Center could not be reached at press time.

Mirza said if the writers were to come to UNM and experience its rich diversity — something that the University takes pride in — they would see a very different agenda from MSA and other groups.

“And we do our best: every group has to show off their diversity,” he said. “MSA does Islamic Awareness Week; that’s important to us because we want to show people that this is how diverse we are, and most people support us in it. Most people really enjoy it when we

do that.”

The anti-Islamophobia resolution passed unanimously

by ASUNM in the spring received some backlash from students and others off campus for attempting to silence political opposition.

ASUNM vice president Alex Cervantes, who was a senator at the time, said any backlash was unprecedented when taking into account the legislation’s intent.

“At the end of the day, this was something (the senators) all supported because we all support students,” she said.

“For us it wasn’t a religious thing, and it wasn’t a racial thing, and it wasn’t any type of group thing; it was just, ‘we’re supporting students who are having hardships’.”

While many around the world perceive Islam as a doctrine based on fear, Mirza said that that is absolutely not the case, especially when it comes to the UNM group that he leads.

“We are completely against any terrorism, including ISIL or Hamas or the Muslim Brotherhood — anybody that’s replacing justice with violence or justice with injustice and peace with violence. We don’t stand with (them),” he said.

Terrorist attacks affect University community

Marvinn Croizeau, a nondegree status exchange student at UNM from France, was sitting in his room listening to live coverage of the soccer match between France and Germany on his radio when he heard explosions. Initially, he thought some youngsters were using fire crackers near the stadium to enjoy the match. But then he suddenly received a notification on his phone that “the stadium (was being) evacuated.”

“To my devastation, it was François Hollande, the French president, who was escorted from the stadium,” said Croizeau. “I suddenly realized that something was terribly wrong.”

He was trying to find out what happened at the stadium when his brother called him from France to say that Paris had been attacked by militants.

The next day, CNN and The New York Times reported that at least 128 people had been killed in coordinated terrorist attacks in various parts of Paris. The media organizations, quoting French officials, reported that at least 100 people were killed at a concert site, at which people had been taken hostage by the terrorists for more than two hours. The New York Times also reported the killings of many others outside the country’s main stadium and at four other popular locations.

The terrorists used suicide vests and automated machine guns during the assault, according to French media.

France’s President François Hollande described the attacks as an “act of war” against France and vowed a “ruthless” response, according to media reports.

Soon after the attacks, ISIS, a terrorist organization controlling one-third of Iraq and Syria, accepted responsibility for the attack, according to different media outlets.

“My mind was blurred. I was lost. I could not comprehend what was going on,” Croizeau said.

He was overwhelmed with concern for his family and friends.

“I called all of my friends in Paris to know if they are safe immediately,” he said. “All of them told me that as soon as they heard the news, they went back home.”

He said that even his friends in Paris were unable to understand what was going on, and as soon as they heard news of the attack, they all closed themselves in their apartments.

“Everyone was fearful,” he said.

On Wednesday, French authorities announced the death of the mastermind of the Paris attacks and his accomplices in a shootout in a suburb north of Paris, according to CNN. As French and Russian jets bombard ISISheld territories, Croizeau thinks, the war on terror has just started for France.

“I feel like it is just the beginning of a ping pong game between us and ISIS,” he said.

“Now, the people of France and the global community have to show that they stand against terrorism. We need to be brave and fearless.”

He said that France was already in a state of war.

“French military is in the streets across the country. I heard my family saying that the police do identity controls everywhere,” he said.

He said there is a need to cut down the finances of terrorists and expel all people from France who have links to militant organizations.

“We all need to show that our solidarity is bigger than their terrorist minority. We need to never stop standing together,” he said.

Terrorism and Refugees He said unfortunately, the terrorist attacks would negatively affects the lives of refugees who are looking for shelters in Europe.

“I don’t want to confuse the two issues, but the first reaction in this kind of situation is to close borders, because it is impossible to separate the terrorists from the genuine refugees when they arrive in France,” he said.

International media reported

that one of the attackers had a Syrian passport. However, some media outlets reported that the passport recovered from the terrorist was forged.

UNM students and alumni arranged a candlelight vigil for the victims of Paris, Beirut and Baghdad attacks on Sunday.

More than 100 had been killed in terrorist attacks in Beirut and Baghdad a day before the militant attacks in Paris, according to media outlets.

Andrew Beale, a UNM alumnus who arranged the vigil, said the sacrifices of all those killed in the terrorist attacks will never be forgotten.

He was talking to a friend in Paris on Facebook as the attack happened.

“I wrote to her, ‘Are you OK?’ And she said was trying to get home. It shook me up. It made everything real for me,” he said.

However, he said war is not a solution to terrorism, and the international community needs to do “something different.”

“War is the problem; it is not a solution,” he said. “Had we not invaded Iraq, ISIS would have never gotten so powerful.”

He said that ISIS took advantage of instability in Iraq and Syria.

He also said that the refugees seeking refuge in Europe should not suffer because of these attacks.

Fighting Terrorism To Become More Complicated Dr. Emile Nakhleh, a retired Senior Intelligence service officer and research professor of national security programs at UNM, said the Paris attacks signal that ISIS has expanded its operations from fighting the “near enemy” to the “far enemy;” which means it’s going global.

“The result is that fighting terrorism in the Middle East region will become more complicated and would require a global effort,” he said.

He said the international response should be both shortterm and long-term.

“The short-term should focus on putting enough boots on the ground, mostly from regional states, to contain the territorial expansion of

ISIS and to cut off its access to oil, commerce and other resources,” he said. “In the long run, the international community should spend several billion dollars to improve the education in those countries and to invest in jobcreation enterprises.”

He said the international community needs to give the rising generation hope for a better future.

“Otherwise, another terrorist group would replace ISIS after it’s defeated,” he said.

He predicted that the Syrian refugees in Europe, “most of whom are truly humanitarian refugees fleeing war and destruction,” would suffer heavily from the actions of a few terrorists.

“They will face more obstacles in getting admitted to European countries and more discrimination once they get there,” he said.

Nakleh said investing in people and spending time and effort in helping those countries get on their feet is the solution of the problem.

“The politics of inclusion — to include respect for human rights; recognition of religious and ethnic minorities; and upholding of freedoms of speech, assembly, movement, and religious worship — is the only way to help those societies transition from violence to peaceful existence,” he said.

Muslims in Albuquerque condemn the attack The Islamic Center of Albuquerque and different Muslim Students Associations condemned the attack on Paris and stressed that Islam should not be linked in any way to ISIS or any other terrorist organizations.

Imam Shafi Abdul Aziz, prayer leader of the Islamic Center of Albuquerque, said Muslims condemn all terrorist attacks in the strongest words. He strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Paris.

Zubair Abro, president of the Pakistani Students Association at UNM, also denounced the terrorist attacks in Paris. He said Muslims stand together with the people of France in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

“We are the victims of terrorism ourselves, and can understand the pain suffered

by French people,” he said.

He said terrorists killed 150 school-going children in Pakistan in December 2014.

“The international community should stand together to fight the menace of terrorism,” he said.

Cowardice is seeing terrorism under every hijab

By Jyllian Roach Did you know UNM is a terroristfriendly school?

It is because we have an active Students for Justice in Palestine chapter, and because ASUNM passed an antiIslamophobia resolution last year. So says David Horowitz, editor-in-chief of FrontPage Magazine and founder of Students for Academic Freedom.

Because popular opinion says that supporting Palestine is anti-Semitic.

The only place Jewish people could find refuge from Europe in the late 1930s was Palestine. Other countries —the United States, Canada, France and Australia, to name a few – refused to take in people who had fled for their lives from a country

where they were being persecuted.

More than 50 years later, the IsraelPalestine conflict is still going strong with no end in sight, and globally, we have learned nothing.

As the people of Syria flee for their lives, the world looks away once more.

Donald Trump suggests we should shut down mosques.

Jeb Bush says we should only help Christian refugees.

More than half of the governors in the nation — including our own — are trying to turn away Syrian refugees.

And everyone cites fear of terrorism as the reason. Terrorism, which seems to always be paired with religion these days.

Last I checked, we were supposedly the “home of the brave.” We’re supposed to be the country that saves the day and

helps the oppressed. I remember the lessons on bravery from every Saturday morning cartoon, after-school special and lauded children’s book that crossed my path when I was a kid.

Bravery means doing what’s right even when you’re scared.

If we were brave, we’d be thinking about the widowed and orphaned refugees first, and terrorists second.

Guess that makes us “home of the cowards.”

We allow ourselves to be dictated by fear. We lash out at people with different gods and different skin tones and different languages. We spend no time on understanding their cultures, histories or religions, and then frame them as the enemy; as terrorists.

People do terrible things, it’s true.

But that doesn’t mean we should hide from everyone to protect ourselves from the few. It doesn’t mean we should take our shoes off at the airport because one idiot tried to make a shoe bomb one time. It doesn’t mean we should automatically fear every woman wearing a hijab. It doesn’t mean we should shut our hearts and our borders to people who are suffering.

And it damn well doesn’t mean that we should accuse universities of being “terrorist-friendly” because they give students a place to talk about their ‘controversial’ beliefs.

exploited and that human rights are not violated. Regulations that protect child laborers and worker safety are ideas that few could ever be opposed to. The reality, though, is that most regulations go far beyond that noble purpose. There are 103 million words in the Code of Federal Regulations.

Are all of those addressing child labor and emergency exits? No, they aren’t.

There are many dumb regulations that

make it hard for employers to do business, and this has a direct impact on new business start-ups and hiring. From 1997 to 2012, federal regulation increased 28 percent. The late 1990s are not historically remembered for rampant child labor or a distinct lack of emergency exits.

It is naive to think that all new regulation fits into the life-saving narrative crafted by proponents, and it is irresponsible to ignore the

real impact it has on small business owners that don’t have mountains of profits or armies of lawyers to comply with each new regulation put out by the EPA or other faceless, unaccountable government agencies.

but I do not think she understands the implication of letting these refugees set up camps elsewhere. Refugee camps are breeding grounds for crime, disease and poverty, and camps are certainly where the 10,000 refugees that Martinez wants to refuse will end up.

These are families, collegeeducated individuals (40 percent of Syrian displaced persons are collegeeducated, by many accounts), teachers, engineers and grocers.

These peoples’ lives and homes were destroyed by the organizations that filled the power vacuums caused by Western intervention in the Middle East for so many years, and now we are refusing to offer shelter.

Not only would providing shelter be the right thing to do, but it would keep these poor, tired, terrorized people out of refugee camps (and likely reduce the costs and time required to integrate them into American society — costs that will only compound the longer it takes to “vet” them).

France gave us Lady Liberty, and she has a poem inscribed on her base. The New Colossus honors America’s past devotion to accepting immigrants and refugees. We used to see immigrants and refugees as a boon — they bring diversity, culture, language and economic value to a country that is rich in all those things, but that could always benefit from more.

ISIS wants us to fear. They want us

to be paralyzed by it to the point of inaction, but I say we fight back. Fight back with love and warmth and the ohso-American welcome, because fear has never been the American way.

Governor Martinez, if you cannot find it in your heart to accept a family of Syrian refugees into your home, send them to me. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore —because I am American and I am not afraid to live up to Lady Liberty’s expectations.

Proposal aims to adjust online course fees

By Jyllian Roach and Denicia Aragon For 15 years, every online class taken at UNM has a delivery fee of $100. But after Friday’s Board of Regents meeting, that fee may change — and not just for students taking online courses.

Vice Provost of Extended Learning Monica Orozco Obando and Associate Vice President of the Office of Planning, Budget and Analysis Andrew Cullen will propose an end to the delivery fee for all online classes at UNM. What would replace it is a mandatory fee that all students would pay each semester, regardless of their

enrollment in online courses.

The new fee would range from approximately “$5.27 to $5.48 per student credit hour (depending on the number of credit hours taken a semester),” according to the Memorandum “Proposed Online Delivery Fee Modification” in the Board of Regents’ Finance and Facilities Committee meeting.

That would translate to about $132 for two semesters at 12 credit hours, and about $158 for two semesters at 15 credit hours.

Part of the reason for the shift is that the original model did not account for the use of UNM Learn, the University’s online classroom, in traditional

face-to-face classes. So while 64 percent of students enroll in online courses, far more use the system to submit assignments or download lecture notes and class readings.

UNM’s first online courses became available in Spring of 2000. It was then that the $100 delivery fee was set at $100 for a 3-hour credit course.

This set price has never been increased, according to the memorandum.

“Delivery fees on fully online courses entirely finance the infrastructure that now supports all course types offered

by UNM,” Orozco and Cullen wrote in the Memorandum.

Travis Givens, a sophomore business marketing major, said a fee hike wouldn’t bother him.

“I wouldn’t mind taking an extra 20 cents more for each class, especially if one day I take on a work load and need to take a few online classes,” he said.

“I’d rather pay 20 cents more than $100 more.”

Kili Murray, a senior English major, said she was unsure of how she felt about the change.

“Having never taken an online class before, I don’t necessarily think it’s a good idea,” she said. “There’s a lot of schedule variation out there, and a lot of students can’t afford extra fees like that. At the same

time, it’s great for the ones that do take a lot of online classes.”

The Board of Regents will make a decision at Friday’s meeting. The meeting will be held in Roberts Room in Scholes Hall from 9 a.m. until noon.

14-year-old student sets his sights high

By Matthew Reisen One UNM student has achieved more than a majority of the student body, and he’s only 14 years old.

Noah Rodney, a dual credit student, said age should not be an obstacle for anyone when it comes to achieving their dreams.

“If you set your mind to it, you can do whatever you want,” he said.

Rodney was born in California and lived in Hawaii before moving to New Mexico.

He had been homeschooled

since first grade. Not one to wait around for traditional advancement, Rodney took the ACT at 13, earning a score of 26.

This semester, Rodney is enrolled as a non-degree status student while taking Arabic 111. His interest in the language was piqued over the summer, when he attended STARTALK, a language program sponsored by the NSA. “I like to be able to take the language course and advanced language courses that I wouldn’t normally be able to take,” he said.

course, and by far the youngest. Rodney plans to continue Arabic next semester in addition to other fields of study, including his favorite subjects: math and science.

But he is just as accomplished outside of the classroom.

An avid outdoorsman and Boy Scout, Rodney earned the Eagle Scout rank — the highest rank given in Boy Scouts — at age 13.

His other hobbies include biking, tennis, rock climbing and mountaineering.

“Mountaineering is my favorite,” Rodney said. “The fun of the climb, the challenge. I like

the summit; the summit’s one of the best parts.”

At age 12 he summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, which was a eightday hike in the snow. He said that it was fun, but also very difficult, and that he often fell asleep while standing up. At one point during the descent, he vomited from dehydration.

Rodney has also summited Mt. Elbrus in Russia. He described it as much more technical than Kilimanjaro, partly due to the necessity of clipping into fixed ropes as he climbed.

Rodney plans to climb 22,840-foot Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina in January, and said

he is not daunted by the task.

“It’s (going to take) 18 days, and a lot of people die on that mountain,” he said.

Cross Country

No. 1 Lobos enter NCAAs as favorites for title

New Mexico has its sights on its first national cross country title.

The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships are just days away. On Saturday, the top-ranked women’s cross country team will be one of 31 schools competing for a national championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Lobos have been ranked No. 1 wire to wire this season, but the only ranking that will matter as the season ends is the one they earn on Saturday afternoon. If the Lobos can take first in that, they will bring home the program’s first cross country national championship, and the school’s second national title in any sport since the skiing team won it all in 2004.

Even though the stakes are higher this weekend, Lobo head coach Joe Franklin said the approach will not change. He said his message to the team will be to have fun.

all year,” he said, “to make sure they go out, run with their friends and enjoy the experience.”

Courtney Frerichs said Franklin tells the team to have fun often. She said that everybody is running because it’s something they enjoy doing, and it’s important not to lose sight of that. In fact, she said she believes the reminders help them focus and run better.

“Before every meet he reminds us, ‘Have fun, find your teammates and work together,’ and after the meet he asks us, ‘Did you have fun?’” Frerichs said. “If we are stressing out or taking it too seriously, that’s when we’re going to make mistakes.”

Franklin said the course is not one they are used to running on.

UNM is not accustomed to fast tracks, but expected rain might slow things down, which will work in their favor, he said.

The team should be wellrested. Franklin held AllAmerican Alice Wright and AllMountain West athletes Heleene Tambet and Emily HoskerThornhill from racing at the regional competition. He said

the runners who did compete were under specific instruction not to push too hard. One of the Colorado runners sprinted past the pack of Lobos near the finish line, which is something Franklin said he didn’t want his team to do.

“We told them specifically, ‘do not get on your toes, don’t sprint. Save that for Saturday,’” Franklin said.

Frerichs said she feels the strategy has already started paying off. She said it allowed the team to focus on getting rest, to back off on the training and feel energetic for Saturday.

“Friday was kind of like a warm up … we didn’t have to tap in to that competitiveness,” she said. “We feel like we are warmed up and ready to go now, versus being worried about getting rested up to compete.”

One advantage that might favor the Lobos is the depth of the team. Frequently this season, the runners finishing outside of the top five have actually outperformed many other teams’ top scorers.

Franklin said depth is

something every coach craves, and allows the team to be interchangeable, giving him more room to make decisions.

He said one of the special things is that, even though there are seven individual runners out there, they all run as a team.

The Lobos will be wearing their

turquoise uniforms for the second time this season, which should make it easy for the teammates to find each other. The women’s race will take place at 10 a.m. MT.

“I wouldn’t want to have people just helping me to the top, kind of dragging me to the top,” he said.

He is thankful for the opportunities he’s had from a young age, and plans to take full advantage of it all.

“It’s fun to be able to do stuff when you’re young and have that experience,” he said. “That

way I can just continue it when I’m older and be very experienced when I’m older so I can do other expeditions” Rodney already has career plans in mind: he wants to attend West Point and be an officer in the U.S. Army, “to serve my country.”

Beyond that goal, Rodney wants to be a mechanical engi-

neer, specifically a pyrotechnics engineer — but that’s not set in stone.

“If I get bored with that, if it’s a boring desk job, (I’ll) possibly become a mountain guide,” he said.

Rodney said he doesn’t think age has to be a limiting factor, and he certainly is not the exception.

“Do what you want to do, accomplish your goals. Don’t worry about your age,” he said.

“If you learn the skills and set your mind to it you can do whatever you want.”

seven summits — the highest mountains in each of the seven continents -- before age 18. He admits, however, that, due to the required qualifications and expense, summiting Everest will more realistically happen for him by age 30.

Rodney said he is taking his time and wants to be physically ready for Everest.

Lobos win despite heartbreaking news Forward Devon Williams has congenital spinal stenosis

The Lobos won this game for Devon Williams.

Following New Mexico’s 7551 victory over Loyola-Chicago in the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge, head coach Craig Neal said Williams will not play basketball again after it was discovered he has congenital spinal stenosis.

“Today was a really hard day,” a choked-up Neal said in his postgame press conference.

“Wow. It was probably the hardest day I’ve had in a long time, telling one of your sons or telling one of your kids he can’t play the game they love.”

Williams went down midway through the second half in Sunday’s victory at NMSU with a neck injury. The injury did not cause the congential spinal stenosis, or a narrowing of the spinal column, but doctors discovered it later and advised Williams to not play again, Neal said.

It is the same condition that ended the football career for offensive lineman Toye Adewon this season.

“I gotta give my guys a lot of credit for being mentally tough and really resilient,” Neal said.

“Playing the way they did to honor him was amazing. That’s what our program is about.”

Williams will continue his education and graduate in the spring, Neal said, with graduate classes coming next fall.

Forward Tim Williams, Wednesday’s leading scorer with 22 points, called it an emotional game. The players wrote “D-Will” on the bottom of their shoes, he said, to represent him.

“That was hard for us, but we came together and got a big win for him,” Tim Williams said.

UNM had little difficulty with Loyola through the first half. After exchanging the first 10 points with the Ramblers, the Lobos broke through with an 11-0 run that spanned 3:20. Forward Tim Williams scored four points dur-

ing the spurt, including one bucket on a rebound putback.

The Lobos also closed out the half with a 7-2 run, holding Loyola-Chicago scoreless over the last 1:46 before the break.

For much of the half Loyola’s zone defense put a heavy emphasis on the UNM guards, especially the two top scorers Cullen Neal and Elijah Brown. That opened up buckets down low. The Lobos dumped 22 points in the low post, more than half of its offensive output through the first 20 minutes.

Williams benefitted the most, scoring 13 points by converting six of his eight shots from the field. He finished with 22 points and seven rebounds for the game, becoming the third different leading scorer in the first three games. The previous two leading scorers, guards Cullen Neal and Elijah Brown, did not crack into double figures with nine and six points, respectively.

against Texas Southern and nine against New Mexico State.

Center Obij Aget also fared well down low with an eightpoint, eight-rebound effort.

The Lobos’ offense continued its firepower into the second half, scoring another 37 points.

The shooting percentage also went up to 65 percent (13 of 20)

in the later half after firing a 59.3 percent clip in the first half (16 of 27). That averaged to 61.7 percent for the game.

Savage/Love 2:00-3:30pm Experimental Theatre A collection of poems and incorporated movement pieces that showcase the trials and tribulations of love, loss and new beginnings. A social commentary on the human experience. $12 General, $10 Faculty & Seniors, $8 Staff & Students.

Centered on seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line, the musical is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical.
