By Liam Cary-Eaves Not speaking up after a hard hit, often times leaving an individual dazed and weary, used to mark strength and durability in football culture.

Yet what was once taken as a sign of toughness is now taken as a sign of danger. Although far from being a new concept, the effects of multiple concussions can no longer be ignored.

The situation has convinced the NFL to change football culture with respect to concussions, in order to take the issue more seriously.

New Mexico football’s head coach Bob Davie said he has witnessed a change in culture recently. He said the football world no longer regards concussions with the same nonchalant attitude it did in the past.

“I think back to some of the drills we used to do 10 to 15 years ago - it’s come a long, long way,” Davie said. “We used to call it getting your bell rung or getting a stinger, it was almost a badge of courage a little bit, quite honestly. A guy that could just do that and keep on playing. Now it’s taken with total seriousness.”

Heightened awareness is something Davie said has been a major contributor to the recent change in approach to dealing with head trauma.

He lost a key offensive lineman in the preseason, who no longer

wanted to risk his mental health after suffering multiple concussions in his playing career.

Giving up the game Johnny Vizcaino said quitting football was one of the hardest decisions he has ever had to make. However, the offensive tackle said his quality of life off the field was far more important than playing the sport he loves.

The junior liberal arts major said football is all that some people have; but for Vizcaino, there is more to life than what takes place on the field.

“A lot of guys are willing to deal with the ramifications of multiple concussions and still play, but I wasn’t one of them,” Vizcaino said. “My mental health takes precedence for me.”

Vizcaino said he never felt pressured by teammates, coaches or training staff to forge ahead after getting his bell rung. He said he was always encouraged to speak up and voice his concerns whenever something did not feel right.

However, Vizcaino said he knows that a lot of players do not handle injuries, especially to the brain, the same way he did, which he attributed to being a judgment call for each individual.

“I think the most important thing is for people to be aware of the risks and know what

would constantly battle with.

Taking the decision away from players Todd Seidler, a risk management specialist and chair of UNM’s Health Exercise and Sports Science Department, said the decision about a player’s health after injury needs to be taken out of athletes’ hands and placed solely in the hands of medical professionals.

He said this is not an easy task, when mixed with the desire to play and prove loyalty to teammates, coaches and fans. He said no matter the difficulty, it’s something that needs to be done in order to protect young athletes.

“It’s really important to understand that we can’t depend on the players,” Seidler said.

“College football especially, and in the pros, will not report an injury of any kind if it’s going to keep them off the field, unless it’s so bad that they just can’t do their job on the field.”

High-profile NFL cases such as Junior Seau and Mike Webster have forced the NFL to stop ignoring the significant problems that arise from taking frequent blows the head.

Webster died at 50 of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known better as CTE. His case was one of the first to bring forth one the truths surrounding football: the sport can cause permanent brain damage.

Seau, the former San Diego Chargers star, committed suicide just two years after retiring as one

of the most prolific linebackers in the game. ESPN reported at the time that Seau had been diagnosed with what numerous retired NFL players before him had: CTE. “A lot of the research is showing now that years of even sub-concussive-level hits to the head and helmets may add up and cause CTE, which is the cause of these early dementia cases with these football cases,” Seidler said.

If such injuries to a vital organ can be caused by sub-concussive blows to the brain, the necessity of reporting concussions has become more apparent than ever.

New research In September, the University of Arizona created an application to portray the initial symptoms of a concussion in order to recognize the preliminary signs.

The application, a tool for athletics trainers, was designed to help players make the right decisions when confronted with some early concussion symptoms.

Athletic trainer Lindsey White said UNM has been conducting research of its own to create an iPad app to help displace the decision making process from those immediately involved in the sport. The mobile app would allow for immediate testing, which would evaluate the severity of a brain injury, exempting players from making any sort of judgment call with regard to their mental health.

“We’re just starting to hone in on some of the key indica-

tors that someone has sustained a concussion,” White said. “As technology continues to improve and as medicine and science continue to improve, I think we’ll be able to hopefully get to a point to where we can streamline the evaluation process.”

Although still in the early stages of research, White said she has been part of the research that would facilitate a major change in head trauma throughout sports.

Several UNM athletics programs assisted in the development of the application. White, among others helping with the application, took a preliminary brain scan of several football players, men’s and women’s soccer players, and a few basketball players, to get a feel for athletes’ usual levels of brain activity.

“Having a baseline measure helped us first and foremost get to know what that individual’s normal was on the tasks that we were having them do,” White said. “But it also helped us to identify areas of the application that could be improved to make the app more user-friendly and overall more applicable to the athletic training world.”

Although the medical world has yet to divest players of all responsibility, the stigmas which used to urge players to “tough it out” have long been stifled.

Scholarships should be as diverse as YOU

By Alexandra Cervantes Halloween has really got me thinking that life, at any stage, is about creating. As kids we are busy fashioning the perfect costumes; as we get older, it’s crafting the suspension of disbelief at a haunted house; and as college students, no matter what we decide is our perfect Halloween recipe, we’re making memories.

As I sit here, watching movies with the people I love, I can’t help but wonder: are we actually creating enough? Or are we just doing what’s needed to get by and maintain what’s already there? Do the realities of adulthood limit our willingness to try new things?

ASUNM is a strange balance between maintenance and creation. On any given year your student government is doing a lot of the same things as the year prior, because that’s what has worked habitually. But each administration runs on the promise of something different, something better.

Our administration is hoping we can deliver on that promise.

We want to create more opportunities for students as they pursue their own dreams of invention.

Sometimes the financial burdens of an education can prevent people from having the freedom and flexibility to create. So, of the many things we’re working on

this year, the latest is providing more financial aid to students.

In addition to having a recordbreaking number of applicants for our fall semester scholarships, this spring semester we are happy to announce we are working to create four new $1,000 awards, bringing our total in the spring to potentially seven scholarships.

These are still in the works, but our office is busy ironing out the criteria and details so they are ready to go.

If you have any ideas about what types of scholarships you would like to see on campus, let us know. We want to provide options to students who normally wouldn’t fall into the more stereotypical scholarship boxes. Tell us your story and let’s think of a creative way to reward our students together.

No matter what, try not to get stuck just filling shoes; shape your own every day. Always create, even if it’s as simple as drawing a Day of the Dead sketch to share with a loved one.

LETTER UNM BeKind encourages kindness in the face of rage Editor, Random acts of violence evoke emotions of despair, frustration, sadness and anger, as well as the ever-present question, “How could this happen?”

In the wake of the recent tragedies in Albuquerque and around our country, “What can I do to help?” or “What small changes can I make to ensure that this doesn’t happen again?” seem to be the recurring questions in our lives. The answer is simple: be kind.

While it’s heartwarming and inspiring to see our community and businesses step up in support of Lilly Garcia and Officer Daniel Webster, I would challenge us to keep this support and

assistance going—even when these tragedies aren’t in the forefront of our minds.

I challenge us as a community to continue to support and assist each other by, as Maya Angelou says, “being the rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” One random act of kindness can be that rainbow.

Kindness is a powerful opportunity to change ourselves and the lives of others.

Choosing to do small, random acts of kindness in our daily lives within our own circles will multiply within the community, throughout Albuquerque, and the country, thus providing a safer place to live and work.

Being kind to each other isn’t difficult or profound, and doesn’t take much extra time or money— and if we are always aware of our surroundings, we will notice ways to assist others every day. Some of the smallest acts of

kindness can make the biggest difference.

Helping a neighbor with their groceries, opening the door for someone or offering a kind word can make the difference between a bad day and a good day.

And, if you want to do more, contribute a few dollars to your favorite charity, donate extra food or clothes for people in need, or volunteer your time to a nonprofit that could use your help.

Because of the recent tragic events, the UNM BeKind team—which is dedicated to doing random acts of kindness not only during National Random Acts of Kindness Week, but throughout the year—wanted to step up and do its part to help prevent road rage and other acts of violence by providing a small reminder to be kind and courteous always, especially while driving.

Car magnets and stickers that read: “Be Kind. Be Courteous. Get home safe,” have

been ordered and will be available for free when they become available. There are also images available at BeKind UNM. If you would like a full-size or half-size copy of the sign to display anywhere you see fit, feel free to download it from BeKind UNM online.

The UNM BeKind initiative is devoted to encouraging random acts of kindness. Annually, in February, the Division of Student Affairs spearheads the celebration of Random Acts of Kindness week on the UNM campus. However, kindness is encouraged each and every day.

Promote kindness, courtesy, respect and safety with random acts of kindness every day.

Where homework meets the homeless Student intends to re-humanize homeless people in society’s eyes via photography project

By Jenna Stoff Every morning before school, 20-year-old Ariane Crummer walks past Golden Pride and sees the same woman stationed outside the restaurant without food. She has an oversized coat that appears too hot to wear, as well as a collection of dirt beneath her fingernails.

To Crummer, a junior psychology major, these features are just a handful of many that indicate homelessness.

“Her name is Linda ... she is the sweetest old lady,” Crummer said.

A project for an introductory photography class is what led her to speak with the woman for the first time.

When she passed by Linda in early October, Crummer said she knew she wanted to photograph other homeless people around Albuquerque for her environmental portraits project.

“That first experience really kept me going with the project,” she said. “(Linda) was so excited that I was going to school. She could have put the focus on herself, on how she’s homeless, but she wanted to know who I was.”

Crummer said she has spoken with about 30 homeless individuals since her then.

Although she has already given her class presentation, she said she plans to continue the project because it was such a rewarding experience.

Crummer has approached people on campus and on the side of the road, where she stops her car to hand out bags of food or spare change. She said she always starts a light conversation before describing the project and asking permission to take photos.

“You have to remember that, as a photographer you have to have good ethics,” she said.

“You can’t just take from someone and not give.”

Overall, Crummer said the people she met in this past month have positively impacted her. She said she finds it shocking, yet pleasing when people agree to be photographed and say they are glad to be treated like human beings.

“I’ve listened to a story about a man being beaten and targeted just because he’s homeless,” she said. “They want to be seen as members of society rather than trash.”

Crummer plans to continue building trust among homeless populations in other parts of the state.

“My family lives in Santa Fe now, so when I visit them I will go around and see how different the area is,” she said.

Offering a few coins, a sandwich and a conversation can go a long way, and serves as a reminder that people can help in simple ways, Crummer said in a recent Facebook post.

“They’re just trying to get back up on their feet,” she said. “Everyone has their hardships.”

New Mexico sweeps NCU in dual meet

Solid performances across the board allowed the UNM swimming and diving team to take a win this Saturday against Northern Colorado (2-4) in a dual meet at Seidler Natatorium.

The Lobos (3-1) took first place in every swimming event except the 200-yard breast stroke. The final score was 203.5-96.5 in favor of the Lobos.

Adriana Palomino, for a second straight week, placed first in all three individual events she competed in. The freshman’s first-place finishes helped the Lobos win in convincing fashion. Head coach Kunio Kono was impressed by Palomino’s performance and gave her credit for her effort.

“She’s just a talented kid,” Kono said. “She works hard, she has a good talent, and just the heart--she wants to go win, and she always tries hard. We’re very

fortunate to have her.”

Her first event was the 1000yard freestyle (10:39.57), and immediately after she competed in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.35), and finally the 500yard freestyle (5:11.00).

Palomino wasn’t the only one having an outstanding day. Junior Kaela McKee took first in two individual events: the 100-yard backstroke (56.95) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.58).

“Going into that (100-yard backstroke), I knew that it was going to be kind of a close race with my own teammates and with UNC, so I really just had to take that out as fast as I could,” McKee said.

“The (200-yard backstroke) was my next event, and I think our team is really strong in the 200 back: we have a lot of backstrokers who were very strong at that event, so my main focus for that was taking it out fast and then

bringing it back the last half as quickly as they would.”

Others from UNM topped their opposition, as well.

Senior Kristin Walker had a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.05). Freshman Emily Huffer took first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.91).

Sophomore Morgan Ginnis also had a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (52.69).

The Lobos also took the first, second and third spots in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

Kono believed this meet, in comparison to the Wyoming meet, was a definite improvement for some of the girls.

“I think some of the girls improved a lot,” Kono said.

“This week we trained really hard. We had a lot of heavy weights. A lot of the girls stepped up from last week, and they had a good improvement.”

Women finish atop the Mountain West

A pack of Lobos crossed the finish line together at the Mountain West Conference Championships on Friday in Reno, Nevada.

What appears to be the top women’s cross country team in the country captured the conference title for the eighth year in the row.

Head coach Joe Franklin was also named Mountain West Women’s Coach of the Year for the eighth consecutive time.

“The women did great,” Franklin said in a release.

“They did a good job of making sure they got through the course. They ran a really good race. It was a little surreal, almost.”

The Lobos finished the Mountain West Cross Country Championships in dominant fashion. Seven UNM runners from the women’s team

finished in the top 12 for the 6-kilometer race.

Courtney Frerichs led the charge, finishing in second place (22:05.19).

Not long after, Alice Wright (22:24.12) placed fourth, Rhona Auckland (22:39.98) fifth, Molly Renfer (22:54.01) sixth, Calli Thackery (22:55.14) seventh and Heleene Tambet (22:55.47) eighth.

Emily Hosker-Thornhill finished 12th (22:55.47).

UNM’s top five finishers have remained consistent, and all five received FirstTeam All-Mountain West honors. It is the first time five teammates have received that distinction in the program since 2002.

Boise State’s Allie Ostrander turned in the top time, but with the Lobos running so efficiently, the scoring wasn’t even close. UNM logged a team score of just 24 points, with Boise State finishing a distant 2nd with 71 points.

The 47-point margin of victory is the largest since 2005.

The men’s streak of six consecutive Mountain West Conference Championships came to a close as they finished 5th.

The men were not able to run as tightly as they had hoped. Elmar Engholm turned in the best time for the men’s team, finishing in sixth (26:43.73).

Dan Milechman finished 11th (27:03.44), but there was a large gap across the team: Graham Thomas finished 26th (27:56.26), Josh Kerr 37th (28:16.58) and Zac Castillo 47th (29:03.35).

“People may look at the results and say, ‘Oh, you got fifth,’” Franklin said in the statement. “Well, we did. They gave everything they could.

We just weren’t there today.”

Colorado State’s Jerrell Mock finished 1st in the men’s race, but it was Air Force that placed three finishers in the

top 10 to win the event, posting a score of 49. The Lobos finished with a team score of 120.

Even though the women’s team has dominated its competition throughout the season thus far, it continues to show improvement from one event to the next, placing more finishers in the top 10 each race. The men have also showed improvement and hope to make the most out of the next opportunity.

The men will still have a chance to clinch a spot at nationals by placing in the top two at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships.

This will be the first opportunity for Albuquerque to see the team at home, as UNM will host the event at the UNM North Golf Course on Nov. 13.

Speaker: Western media are increasingly biased

On Wednesday, the Israel Public Diplomacy Forum stopped at UNM to give a talk on the problems with western media coverage of conflicts and issues in the Middle East.

Dr. Eytan Gilboa, chair and academic director of the organization that seeks to educate and advance understanding of Middle Eastern and Israeli issues, presented on the subject during the group’s New Mexico leg of its three-state trip.

His presentation focused on ways that coverage of Middle Eastern affairs is being blurred through specific techniques that western media utilize.

“These are always difficult issues because often journalists face dilemmas, especially when they are threatened to submit a particular report,” Gilboa said.

“When your life is on the line, then you may behave in ways that contradict professional

and ethical norms.”

Gilboa credited part of the problem to what he calls “new journalism” – a shift from traditional, objective reporting to journalism that is obligated to take a stand on an issue.

Gilboa said that, unfortunately, the concept of new journalism has led to inaccurate reporting, particularly on the Middle East.

“Objectivity, neutrality, balance and fairness ... forget about all of those,” he said.

“These belong to perhaps a previous age and a previous generation of journalists.”

He said that framing — putting emphasis on particular events to reach a subjective conclusion — is one of the main components of new journalism, or “journalism of attachment.”

“The goal is to promote a particular interpretation,” he said, “which runs contrary to many professional and ethical norms ... framing is usually the opposite of objective and fair journalism.”

He said such framing is usually done in the headlines and subheadlines of stories, which, in some instances, might be all that an individual sees about a story.

Gilboa also cited the first paragraphs of stories, source use and graphics as things that may be manipulated through framing for media outlets to convey a certain message to the public.

He also presented a recent front-page picture from the New York Times, which seemed to show an Israeli policeman beating a Palestinian citizen.

However, Gilboa said that the picture can be misinterpreted — especially with the lack of context in the photo’s caption — and that the policeman was actually assisting the man.

“We have to conclude that there is some kind of a mental thinking ... that when editors at the New York Times see something like that, it could not be otherwise, it must be an Israeli policeman beating a Palestinian,” Gilboa

said. “This is both professional and ethical failure.”

Gilboa suggested that one reason for the seemingly biased and inaccurate coverage is an anti-Israeli mentality perpetuated in the media. “(There may be) something against whatever Israel does, that whatever Israel does is wrong, and you can see it in European coverage and some American coverage.”

UNM journalism instructor Jaelyn DeMaria, who attended Gilboa’s lecture, said that journalistic preference is not just a trait of western media, but of all media and news outlets.

“I believe that we all carry all of our own life experience and internal biases with us as reporters,” DeMaria said. “I think that as long as human beings create media, there will be bias.”

The pubic should always be critical of the media they consume in order to be responsible consumers,

especially when it comes to global concerns, she said.

“It is critically important for all people to be informed about what is happening around the world,” she said, “because foreign affairs impact the underlying foundation of our collective world.”

In contrast, near the end of his lecture, Gilboa took the stance that western media are skewing their reporting, blurring the public’s understanding of what is happening overseas.

“There is something very mysterious about the way Israel is being covered in western media, including the American media,” he said.

“Reporters are not supposed to make mistakes like this ... the fact that they do occur means that there’s something wrong with this coverage.”

Green Jeans Farmery trapped in permit purgatory

Green Jeans Farmery, Albuquerque’s new uniquelystyled shipping container development, was supposed to celebrate its grand opening last Tuesday, but permit complications have caused a delay.

Located off of Carlisle Boulevard and I-40, the establishment will be home to 12 tenants, all of which are locally owned businesses. However, only Santa Fe Brewing, which opened in September, has an occupancy permit from the city.

City Planning Director Suzanne Lubar said the delay has been caused by unapproved, unrevised changes to the development’s original design, called a “shell drawing”.

She said the developer, Roy Solomon, made changes to the buildings’ original electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. Once the tenants started to bring in their improvement plans, they referenced the original shell

drawing, indicating that changes were made that were not brought to the city’s attention.

“The problem is that the tenants’ applications referred back to the shell drawing, and when we looked at the tenants’ drawings versus the shell drawings, it didn’t match,” Lubar said.

Lubar said any changes made to the original shell drawing must be reviewed, revised and stamped by licensed engineers. Until that happens, Green Jeans tenants will not receive building permits, inspections or the ability to receive a “certificate of occupancy”.

“We are waiting on those revised drawings that have been reviewed and approved by engineers in regards to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems,” Lubar said.

“It’s also my understanding that there are revisions that might be needed by a licensed architect.”

Although the Green Jeans development did not open as soon as expected, some of the tenants still share an

optimistic outlook.

“I have nothing but great things to say about everyone who has been putting in all of their time and hard work over there, and all of the tenants who have been patient,” said Kelly Adams, owner of the Rustic on the Green Restaurant.

Adams said the permit battle between the establishment and the city has not affected the positive attitude surrounding the development.

“There’s a lot of positive energy going around, and things are coming together,” Adams said. “It’ll open when it opens.”

Adams, who also owns the Rustic Food Truck, said Rustic on the Green has not been noticeably affected by the Green Jeans delay since his food truck business has been successful. He said he has no complaints about the entire process.

the delays have caused Green Jeans to miss out on a large business opportunity.

“We were hoping to be open for the Balloon Fiesta, and we really missed out on that,” Garcia said. “We thought that construction would move a little faster.”

Garcia said he is also facing payments for business expenses, but is understanding of the situation at hand.

“We can’t rush these things; it’s a new concept to Albuquerque. We’ve never seen anything like this.”

Garcia said he and Tony Lopez, the second co-owner of Epiphany Espresso, see a lot of business potential in Albuquerque after spending time working in Denver. He also said once Green Jeans finally gets up and running, he believes it will be a popular attraction for UNM students.

“We have our Lobo pride here in Albuquerque, so we’re going to do a ‘Lobo latte’ and ‘Lobo lemonade,’ just as examples,” Garcia said. “We’re not far from campus at all, so we

want to be a hub for students.”

Lubar said Solomon is currently working with his team of professionals to get the changes to the plans revised and turned in to the city.

She said once his changes are submitted, it would only take a few days for inspectors to visit the development and approve the plans. The exact opening date for Green Jeans is still uncertain, but everyone is hoping for a time within the next two weeks.

“We’re really sorry that we had this issue with not having all the permits and everything in order, but until we have properly issued permits we’re prohibited from issuing certificates of occupancy,” Lubar said. “However, the city is absolutely supportive of this project; we’re really excited about it. It’s a really special and unique environment that we’re all going to enjoy.”

Defense needs tightening before season opener

By Liam Cary-Eaves If New Mexico is to take anything away from Saturday’s Cherry vs. Silver scrimmage, it is this: the defense needs to improve.

UNM was out warming up early Saturday morning in anticipation of playing a live game against its male practice opponents. However, the men of the Silver team had no trouble moving the ball around against the Lobos’ defense in a 90-57 route over the Cherry squad.

“There’s going to be times when you’re not going to be able to put the ball in the basket. That happens to every team,” head coach Yvonne Sanchez said. “But if your defense isn’t there to make up the difference, then you’re going to be in a little bit of trouble.”

Granted, New Mexico was without one of its best defenders down low, with forward Khadijah Shumpert being sick.

Sanchez said she gave her preseason all-conference player the day off because Shumpert needed to be ready for Wednesday night’s preseason opener against Western New Mexico.

Sanchez said she took the decision out of Shumpert’s hands because she knew her senior starter would do whatever it took to get out on the court. However, some good may have come from Shumpert’s absence.

The Lobos got a good look

at one of their blossoming freshmen, center Jaisa Nunn, whose near-double-double was the best performance on the Cherry squad.

“I definitely thought it was intense, fast-paced and not what I’m used to,” Nunn said.

“But I am getting adjusted to it.”

Despite being a freshman, Nunn is getting acclimated to collegiate-level play quickly.

Her 14 points and nine boards on the day was the best of any member for Cherry.

Nunn is also auditioning for a starting role come opening day. Sanchez has said all offseason that the number of minutes and form in which they come will be earned because Sanchez said she is comfortable playing anyone at any time.

“Obviously, Khadijah is going to be (starting),” Sanchez said. “I mean, Kianna (Keller), Whitney (Johnson), and Jaisa-it’s going to be one of those three (as well),” Sanchez said. “I just don’t know.”

Sanchez said she applauded Keller’s 4-of-8 shooting and six boards. But with Alexa Chavez, last year’s starting forward, battling a foot injury, Sanchez is giving plenty of attention to those who want to claim the spot.

The head coach added that she does not know if the team could use the experience that Keller brings, or if she should instead try out one of her freshman centers, the only true centers on the team.

While Sanchez is blessed with the problem of selecting which of her talented posts will get the starting gig, the head coach is also looking for someone to step in at shooting guard in place of Antiesha Brown, last year’s starting guard.

That decision won’t be an easy task for Sanchez either, with her abundance of new

Offense likely won’t be the deciding factor for who fills in as Brown’s replacement, as Sanchez runs a defense-oriented team.

“Our guards have to do a much better job defensively,” Sanchez said. “We just started working on the zone, so I didn’t expect the zone to be

stellar by any means, but our man-to-man defense has to be better.”

Team’s season on the line at MW tournament

In all likelihood, the Mountain West will only send one representative to the NCAA women’s soccer tournament. That means the Lobos’ season lives or dies by this week’s Mountain West tournament in San Diego.

And if they happen to make it, the Lobos will get some measure of revenge along the way against the only three teams they lost to during the conference schedule.

UNM (9-8-1, 7-3-1 MW), as the No. 3 seed, takes on sixthseeded UNLV Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Mountain Time in the tournament’s first round. Should the Lobos advance, they’ll play No. 2 San Jose State on Thursday.

UNLV defeated UNM 3-1 on Oct. 4, while SJSU claimed a 2-1 overtime win on Oct. 16.

San Diego State University will be vying for its fourthstraight MW title. SDSU locked up the top seed for the tournament and should be the favorite to win, but UNM is on the opposite side of the bracket.

Therefore, a potential rematch from last Friday’s regular-season finale – SDSU prevailed 2-1 in the closing moments – would be for the title.

“We noticed that (revenge was possible) as well, and we’re just so excited we’re on that side of the bracket because we can really prove to these teams they didn’t deserve to beat us the first time,” Lobo forward Madisyn Olguin said. “We’re going to come out with everything Lobo Soccer has.”

Only SDSU, SJSU and UNM had bids for the conference tournament secured heading into the final games on Friday.

Boise State and Utah State both played themselves out of the tournament when they tied Friday, and UNLV’s bid was only ensured when it beat Nevada 3-1 on the final game night.

In the other first-round matchup Tuesday, No. 4 Wyoming battles fifth-seeded Colorado College.

That game happens after the UNM-UNLV contest. The Cowgirl-Tiger winner plays host San Diego State in Thursday’s second semifinal game.

The tournament champion will be determined Saturday at 8 p.m. MT. UNM head coach Heather Dyche said last week she predicts SDSU will be the only MW team to be considered for an atlarge bid.

UNM missed out on the other first-round bye to San Jose State with Friday’s loss and the Spartans’ 2-0 victory over Fresno State.

The Lobos and Aztecs fought a close game throughout, with each team’s stout defense containing several scoring opportunities.

In the previous meeting between UNM and UNLV, the Rebels scored three straight times At that point in the season, UNM still struggled with making the most of its scoring chances.

That issue for UNM has since been rectified.

In the seven games that followed Oct. 2, the Lobos netted 13 goals and had only one game without a goal. Even that contest was a scoreless draw at Wyoming.

Through the 10 games prior to Oct. 10, UNM had 10 goals.

“We’re creating more opportunities, so we’re able to finish more of them,” Olguin said. “And also, our defense has been a rock back there. They’re eliminating the chances the other teams get, so those combined make us a much better team than the last time we

Physical battle at FIU ends in 0-0 draw

The UNM men’s soccer team gained another Conference USA point after battling to a scoreless draw with Florida International on Saturday night.

FIU (9-5-1, 3-3-1) had a tight hold on the ball and kept the New Mexico defense on its toes. The Panthers outshot the Lobos 21-5 and led 10-4 in corner kicks.

It was also a very physical game, with a total of 30 fouls and five yellow cards distributed. FIU contributed 19 fouls and four yellow cards.

UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein described the environment as “tough,” but said he thought his team was able to

create some chances.

“I’m really proud of our effort,” he said in a statement. “I’m disappointed with the result for the guys’ sake, but we battled and were mature. I’m not happy (with a tie), but I’m also very focused on the positives.”

The first 15 minutes of the match saw three shots, all coming from FIU. But in the 20th minute the Lobos began creating their own chances.

Junior midfielder Josh Goss sent a free kick that bounced at the edge of the six-yard box and then off the cross bar. A minute later, Goss had another chance with a free kick from about 25 yards out, but sent the ball too high.

In the 24th minute FIU regained the ball. Sophomore midfielder Brad Fountain took

a shot at the Lobo net, but goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu was able to make the save.

This lead to a corner kick taken by FIU midfielder Ismael Longo. His teammate, Patrick Lopez, forced Beaulieu into another save. A second corner kick followed, but nothing came of it.

The first half ended with FIU leading 9-2 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

The Panthers began their attacks early in the second half.

Just four minutes in they took two shots, both blocked by the New Mexico defense.

In the 51st minute, Lobo midfielder Francesco Casucci took the one shot that FIU keeper Arthur Clapot would be forced to save during the entire night.

Just four minutes before regulation time was over, FIU’s Santiago Patino had a good chance at scoring a goal for his team, but Beaulieu kept the Lobos alive by making one of his biggest saves of the night.

The regular 90 minutes ended with the Panthers leading 15-5 in shots and 9-3 in corner kicks.

During overtime, the Lobos were not able to record a single shot, but FIU recorded six.

Three of these were on goal. By the end of the match Beaulieu had made a total of eight saves.

Fishbein said he was happy with the way the Lobos handled the game defensively on Saturday, but that the team as a whole still has room for improvement.

“We’re a good team and we continue to gain maturity,” Fishbein said in the release.

“Our Achilles’ heel this season has just been our inability to finish our chances.”

The Lobos (7-4-4, 1-3-2) remain in seventh place in CUSA. There’s one more conference match remaining for New Mexico, and if the Lobos can pull off the win they could be guaranteed a spot in this year’s championship.

The Lobos will host Florida Atlantic on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex.
