The evolution of the modern living dead

By Robert Maler In a decade full of remakes, moviegoers have seen many classic supernatural creatures evolve. Vampires now sparkle.

Werewolves suddenly control their transformations.

Perhaps the latest popular evolution, however, is that of the zombie.

Zombies are a lot older than some might think, first appearing in film about 80 years ago, and maintaining a screen presence ever since.

Zombies are probably best defined as reanimated corpses.

Most credit Victor Halperin’s 1932 film “White Zombie” as the first in film. In the movie, zombies were created and controlled by a voodoo master named Murder.

James Stone, an associate professor of cinematic arts who

teaches international horror film, said an argument could be made that Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein” was actually the first zombie.

“Although it’s not strictly a zombie story, it is about a series of reanimated corpses that are stitched together,” Stone said.

Stone said there is a really important distinction between early groups of zombie films and those of today. Because there was a great interest in voodoo, those early stories are about control and were typically filled with racial and gender anxieties.

George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” is probably more recognizable as the birth of zombies as fans know them. This was likely the start of zombies rising from the grave without being controlled by anyone.

“Instead of being a story about control, it’s now a story about plague,” Stone said. “This is now going to be a story about a

plague of cannibals.”

Stone said he believed Romero’s franchise, which continued into the 2000s, has achieved success because Romero was always a very selfconscious social commentator.

Stone said the films touch a nerve with people because they seem to be talking about our lives and the culture in which we live.

Even though there have been dozens of successful zombie movies over the following decades, the video-gameturned-film-franchise “Resident Evil” changed the landscape in 2002 by introducing them as humans infected with a virus.

This film seemed to spearhead the infected premise and the repopularization of zombie horror films. Stone said there still is a connection to the older films, even back to “Frankenstein,” because it’s often science’s fault; and that’s what creates the so-

called monsters or zombies.

“Resident Evil” opened the door for other films such as “28 Days Later,” “I Am Legend,” “Quarantine” and “World War Z,” making the infected zombies much faster and stronger. Stone said one of the most potent images of “World War Z” was of all the zombies stacking on top of each other to scale a wall and breach a barrier.

“We’ve gone from a zombie cinema that’s about the ability to control, to a zombie cinema that’s about a complete inability to control,” he said.

Stone said he did notice that the slow, almost sleep-walking zombies returned in “Shaun of the Dead” and other more recent works. It and several other movies like “Zombieland” have capitalized on the comedic aspects of the zombie. He said while it focused on comedy, it did a good job of illustrating there’s not much separation between them and us.

Deputies keeping eyes open despite crime rarity

By David Lynch Studies have shown that Halloween celebrations in major cities can lead to spikes in crimes such as vandalism, homicide and robbery.

However, in Albuquerque, keeping an eye open might be all it takes in a city where the only real terror lies in houses and businesses being draped in toilet paper.

“There’s sometimes kids playing pranks, and I shouldn’t say kids, but maybe teenagers playing pranks, and they’re toilet-papering houses, doing different things like that. Other than that, we haven’t seen a real big increase in crime (on Halloween),” said Capt. Ray Chavez of the Bernalillo County Sheriff ’s Department.

According to boston.com, the Massachusetts city experiences a violent crime rate on Halloween that is “50 percent higher than on any other date during the year.”

Angeles, and the Washington Post states that vandalism on cars were higher on Oct. 31 than any other day of the year between 2008 and 2012.

Crime of that nature is rare on Halloween in Albuquerque,Chavez said. The focus for his deputies is mostly on watching out for the safety of trick-or-treaters going door to door.

“We’re not doing anything specific, although in our briefings we do tell the deputies that we’ve got to be vigilant for the kids’ safety,” he said. “That means higher traffic enforcement in residential areas, and just... keeping an extra eye open.”

Part of local law enforcement’s line of sight will be around UNM on a holiday that TIME calls the eighth most popular nationwide for breaking out the booze.

“We will be on alert for pranks and parties throughout campus,” UNMPD Lieutenant Tim Stump said. “(However), we typically do not foresee any issues and have not in many years during Halloween.”

Stump advised students walking

through campus during the night to be in pairs or larger groups, and all students are encouraged to call 277-2241 for an escort should they ever feel unsafe.

While law enforcement officials said there isn’t a noticeable spike in crime locally on Halloween, the same can’t be said for petty pranks and random acts of property crime, at least in some parts of the city.

Joe Gallegos, a member of the University Heights Neighborhood Association,said misconduct around this time of year is typically limited to plastic graves being pulled out from the ground and hanging ghosts being ripped from trees in homeowners’ yards.

“That’s stuff that’s been occurring since probably the beginning of October, when they start doing decorations and stuff for Halloween,” Gallegos said.

In a voicemail message to the Daily Lobo, Carolyn Siegel, president of the Alvarado Gardens Neighborhood Association, said even that activity is unusual in the North Valley. She said she does not

know of any seasonal crime in her neighborhood, and she has lived in the area since 1984.

Chavez said neighborhood associations, such as the ones Gallegos and Siegel lead, are vital to providing a public voice of concern to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department, especially on days like Halloween.

“If in our area we get a tip of vandalism around those times… we would relay it to the deputies and tell them ‘Hey look, you need to help us out…’” he said.

He said when there is a spike of vandalism in a certain neighborhood, deputies make an effort to patrol that area more, especially on years like this when Halloween falls on a weekend.

Michaela Hida, a senior psychology major, said perhaps younger people who decide to pull pranks on Halloween feel as though they’re going along with the somewhat rebellious nature of the holiday.

“It’s bad, it’s evil, it’s getting in the spirit,” Hida said. “I know some people don’t even celebrate

it because it has that mischievous connotation to it.”

Hida said she’s been a victim of random Halloween destruction – or rather her decorations have been.

“I’ve had my pumpkin stolen and smashed before and it’s just like ‘why would you do that?’ But I don’t know, because I have actually had friends who have gone and (done) stuff like that before, and they said it’s just something to do,” she said.

Whether it’s saving pumpkins from meeting an untimely demise or looking out for young children seeking sweets, Chavez said his deputies will be on the lookout.

“Even though we haven’t hired extra people, we’re still out there,” he said. “The sheriff ’s department now is a fully-staffed sworn law enforcement agency that has everybody working, so we’re going to be working diligently to keep everybody safe.”

While the zombie idea isn’t new, the series also begs the

question of who the real monsters are and highlights how quickly we might lose our humanity.

Stone said it’s interesting to think how quickly we would devolve as a civilization when we think we are justified in our actions.

“How easy would it be for us to kill zombies who five minutes earlier were normal people,”

Stone said. “It’s a very scary fantasy having carte blanche to be as destructive as you want, and that’s one of the most disturbing images, not the zombie.”

Stone said he believes the post-apocalyptic theme of zombie stories will continue at least for the foreseeable future.

“If we stay as apocalyptic-

minded as we are and as culturally weary of difference, then I think there’s a place for the zombie for a long time,“ Stone said.

By Matthew Reisen Halloween is a night that means something different for everyone. Kids focus on all the free candy while many of their elders set out to drink obscene amounts of booze. It is a holiday that involves mischief, giving, frights, games and so much more.

But above all, Halloween is about dressing up. Whether it’s scary or funny, people love to dress up. Some people choose to dress up with controversial or potentially offensive costumes.

Here is a list of 2015’s top five most offensive costumes for those of you looking to piss your peers off this year.

Become one of the many silent victims of the refugee crisis and let the political opinions fly.

All you need is a selfie-stick (homemade or genuine), fake blood (of course) and some indicator of what you were trying to squeeze your head into a frame with (i.e. shark bite/bull horns/cliffside or that flaming crème brulée that went awry).

As for clothing, there are many avenues to take: do half your face in makeup or wear a half jeanskirt combo. Whatever you choose, make sure it brings justice to the long oppressed and pigeon-holed storm system.

Bonus costume: Vengeful Christopher Columbus Columbus Day was recently abolished in our city, a trend that is spreading fast across the nation. Imagine how Columbus would react if he were here, channel that and take it to the streets. The best way to go about this is to wear the traditional explorer garb of old and add some blood/zombie makeup.

To finish off the idea, have a sign that says “abolish Indigenous People’s Day” or “I was here first.” People will get the idea – and you may get hurt. If that happens, you kind of asked for it.

Superstition is the way: sports and rituals Athletes keep routines alive

By Liam Cary-Eaves The wide world of sports is a magical place. So much so, in fact, that obsessive-compulsive tendencies rule its world. A plethora of fans, sports information directors and, of course, the players themselves, have rituals they endure in order to facilitate a positive energy toward their respected teams.

Superstition in sports has been around for decades. Tracing back to ancient tales, timeless traditions, and of course longstanding curses, the majestic ambiance has a rightful place in every arena, field or ballpark.

New Mexico’s junior outfielder Danny Collier said the feeling can be traced to his freshman Sandia High School baseball shorts.

“I’ve worn the same shorts – obviously I wash them – for the last seven years,” he said. “I actually almost lost them this summer and Dalton Bowers was giving me a hard time about giving them back.”

Collier’s old (but clean) baseball shorts are not the only thing that matters before and during every game. In his sophomore campaign, the outfielder was able to hit .346, drive in 28 runs and score 30 times with his peculiar game-day ritual.

Before games, Collier said he must jump into his routine by listening to a specified playlist.

Leading up to a contest, the

outfielder must sip on some chocolate milk for preparation.

And, after Collier hoists his baseball pants over his Sandia High School shorts, he must place his ChapStick strategically in the left rear pocket.

“They’re lucky to me or something,” he said. “If I don’t do every single one of those things, I feel like I’m not prepared.”

Many baseball players know not to bring bad mojo by stepping on freshly painted chalk along the foul lines. They avoid the pitcher’s mound between innings, refuse to talk to a pitcher during a no-hitter, and, of course, wear the late-inning rally caps, but not many have considered the importance of wellplaced ChapStick.

Superstitions are not unique to the baseball diamond. Senior Khadijah Shumpert’s pregame rituals stem as far back as to when the forward first started playing basketball.

“When I was really young, I’d get nervous, so I’d have to use the bathroom and I’d end up washing my hands a bunch of times,” she said. “Now I just do it all the time.”

While Shumpert said she has outgrown her nervous bathroom habits, she has not outgrown the necessity to wash her hands exactly five times before every game. The senior forward said she doesn’t find the pregame ritual of listening to Beyoncé or Drake to be weird, nor does she find the necessity to cleanse her hands a precise

amount of times to be at all out of the ordinary.

“It has to be exactly five times to be a good game,” she said.

Shumpert said the superstitions don’t cease with her. The team must undergo serious talks about uniform code before venturing onto the court. While New Mexico dictates team colors for jerseys, shorts, and warmup attire, each member of the team must be wearing matching colors for their accessories.

Although some players choose to opt out of wearing excessive gear aside from their normal uniforms, the players who do choose to accessorize must wear color-coordinated items. She said particular color combinations will generate different results.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if every athlete has a ritual,” Shumpert said.

“It’s more like a routine, which goes back to what coaches preach about muscle memory. Everything is a routine.”

While players have their own ways of getting into game-shape, those on the sidelines are not exempt from the perplexing nature of the game.

same place during the national anthem. He did say, however, he might still have a bit of influence on some of the outcomes of games.

“I don’t have a ton (of superstitions), but certainly against Hawaii when they lined up for that field goal, I stood almost exactly where I stood when the kid from UNLV… missed last year,” Mercogliano said.

That missed field goal propelled New Mexico to a late run to win

its last home game against Hawaii 28-27.

Call it chance, call it coincidence, or call it sheer dumb luck, there is a magnificent force in the sports culture that cannot be denied. At least those in the sports world think so.

By Matthew Reisen Hey, you. Yeah. I’m talking to you. The one who could care less about this paper because it’s Halloween-centered and you hate Halloween.

Before you throw this issue aside, I’ll let you in on a little secret: There are other things to do on Halloween. You don’t have to lock yourself away. I have a list of five things to help you to have a good time on Oct. 31 while avoiding the festivities you may find annoying, routine, absurd or just plain boring.

Check out Tom Hanks in the CIA noir “Bridge of Spies,” Matt Damon in the SF flick “The Martian” or Johnny Depp as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in “Black Mass”. While it is a bunch of actors dressing up as other people, there is no other correlation with Halloween.

3. Blow something up Subvert expectations, head out to the lawless firework wonderland that is Moriarty and get yourself some good ol’ black-powder by the pound. The only connection to Halloween you’ll come across is the black cat on the wrapper that says, ‘you got the good stuff.’ It doesn’t have to be July or January to blow off some spinners, cracker jacks and bottle rockets.

4. Get lost Ignore the notion of Halloween and instead focus on the bigger picture: Fall is here!

5. Laugh a little

and Improv Theatre for “The Show.” Throughout the evening, performers improvise skits and songs off audience suggestions along with any absurdity that crosses their minds. It may be the perfect way to ward off unwanted Halloween vibes, and maybe even crack a joke or two at the holiday’s expense (we all know there’s plenty of material there).

While the rest of the city seeks out scares and screams, appease your funny side. Grab a nice dinner and afterward, mosey over to the Box Performance Space

Local haunted houses ranked by scare factor

Halloween is all about fear (among other things). Those who enjoy Halloween either want to scare people or get scared. For those who choose the latter, a popular choice is to visit a haunted house. Depending on how easily scared you are, you may need a scorecard. Worry not. The Daily Lobo has your haunted house picks covered.

NM Slaughterhouse Scare Factor: 9.5/10 Warnings that victims they may be touched by something are spot on. Groups are often separated and the house is a maze, which may increase frustration and the likelihood of being scared.

Realism: 10/10 The elaborate set design is probably the most impressive aspect. Special effects are well done and costume design is great; even the supernatural creatures seem authentic.

Acting: 9.5/10 The actors include creepy children, clowns and supernatural manifestations of children’s nightmares. They do a great job of committing and controlling the action, providing a unique experience.

Cost: 9.5/10 General admission is set at $30.

The experience makes the slightly higher price worth the cost. The production company also recommends saving ticket stubs, which have a serial number, because the company offers promotions throughout the year via their Facebook page to reward customers.

The attraction, located at 1909 Bellamah Ave. NW, is open through Halloween night. This year, two blood bath and black out nights will be offered to provide an even more intense experience.

Too bad people can’t see them, or anything else for that matter.

Realism: 4/10 The props made it clear what the use of each room was, but it was too dark to make any of them out. While patrons could be shocked a few times in the maze, the uneven sand floor and lack of lighting made the risk of falling more frightening than the black silhouettes.

Acting: 6/10 Our tour guide had our group convinced he was just another customer.

It wasn’t until we made it to the last maze that we realized that he was part of the staff. There were two occasions in addition to that of the tour guide that the acting was truly impressive.

The little boy and his father made our group uneasy. The jump scares involving clown masks were the only consistent jump scares. However, the acrobatics by the young man in the

Those who imagined this will be horribly disappointed to find that the “zombie hoard” consists of the same three guys. They don’t even look like zombies. Acting: 5/10 The man leading the tour has high levels of energy and is helpful in showing customers how to work

Battlefield Apocalypse Scare factor: 3/10 As someone who is so easy to scare, it’s a lot coming from me to

their paintball markers. The story of what’s behind all the banging noises is interesting, but you can tell the actors find it harder to keep up with the story as they take more and more abuse from paintballs.

Cost: 5/10 Battlefield Apocalypse admission is $25 per person. Considering the building takes only 20 minutes to get through, it’s really not worth the money. Perhaps going in a larger group would make a difference, but if you just bring a friend as I did, expect the most fun to come out of tripping your friend in the dark.

NM choirs amplify chills in ‘Spooktacular’ Choir show pays tribute to thrilling musical classics

A suspenseful soundtrack typifies any great thriller, horror or Halloween film, and it is to be expected of the New Mexico Philharmonic this Halloween at their annual “Halloween Spooktacular.”

The New Mexico Philharmonic will perform at Popejoy Hall on Saturday at 6 p.m. in partnership with the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus and the New Mexico Women’s Chorus.

Labeled a “symphonic tribute to the greatest musical chills and thrills of all time,” the concert is

appealing to a family audience.

Alex Onieal, the New Mexico Philharmonic office manager, said this year they are emphasizing a family-friendly environment. With the help of the So-Low VW Club, the “trunkor-treat” entails a number of cars outside of Popejoy offering attendees the trick-or-treating experience by visiting the cars.

Marian Tanau, the executive director, said he hopes this can draw a broader audience than last year.

“The ‘trunk-or-treat’ is a great alternative to trick-or-treating because this is in a safe space and it doesn’t matter that it gets dark early. We hope this draws more families as this is a familyoriented event,” he said.

Alexis Corbin, the operations coordinator of the event, said the event comes with many extras, including hanging out with “Star Wars” character, face painting

and a photo booth.

James of KOB Eyewitness News 4 will be the MC. Onieal said attendees can expect a variety of performances at the event.

“We will have general Halloween-themed music, some numbers from Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and a couple of Tim Burton soundtracks. Really just music that fits the sound of Halloween,” Oneial said.

Joining the philharmonic are The New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus, led by Aaron Howe, and The New Mexico Women’s Chorus. All three groups have long histories of involvement in the Albuquerque community and have frequently collaborated for such events.

Corbin said though the philharmonic has never worked with the two groups before, they are both incredibly accomplished choirs and she’s sure they will add a great element to the performance.

“This is the first time we’ve worked with these choruses.We usually work with choruses from the local school community, but these are two really successful groups and I’m really excited to see how it all comes together.”

Corbin said she encourages all those who come to dress up.

“The choir and the orchestra are all going to be in costume so it’s going to be a really enthusiastic event,” she said.

The new performers in this year’s line-up promise a “frightfully good night.” After all, it wouldn’t Halloween be without a chilling soundtrack.

By Isabel Gonzalez Stories of drama, jealousy and murder echo down the empty streets of the Albuquerque Old Town area every night.

To hear them though, you must make a reservation for the Old Town Ghost Tour before 6 p.m.

The Old Town Ghost Tour takes visitors through 306 years of history in hopes of rediscovering the longforgotten secrets that haunt the area surrounding Old Town Plaza.

Every night, a guide takes a group of 12 people on a 90-minute —sometimes longer —expedition through historic buildings and dark alleys.

Tour guide Craig Degenhardt said the Old Town area is home to 13 major ghosts. This is a technical term which means an apparition that has been seen by at least three people.

One of these ghosts is Scarlett.

This redheaded woman was a staff member of what Degenhardt described as a “house of negotiated affection”. According to legend, her beauty led her to be solicited quite often. Her beauty, or rather the jealousy of her beauty by the other women, ultimately led to her murder.

Degenhardt said an alleged Scarlett encounter occurred in

2005 when two skateboarders sat by a former back entrance of the brothel. He said they reported seeing an old woman asking for money. A few minutes later they saw a younger, prettier version of the woman, who asked them to follow her into the courtyard.

She went inside the building, but didn’t leave the doors open; When the men knocked they heard the woman’s voice say, “Just a minute, boys,” he said.

When the doors suddenly flew open, one man was hit on the head while the other said he suddenly felt cold air all around him.

Degenhardt said he himself has encountered several strange situations while working in the area. He said he was giving a tour two years ago, when he heard a horrible wail.

“I had the hair on my arms standing up,” he said.

Police officers investigated the scream while his group kept walking, he said. They found nothing.

Degenhardt said he thinks he the scream came from La Llorona or “The Weeping Woman.”

He said this southwest legend is based on a young mother who couldn’t take care of her children anymore, so she threw them into the river. Coming to her senses and

realizing what she had done, she tried to rescue them, but it was too late. The children had drowned.

Legend says she never stopped wailing, not even when she was taken to a mental institution.

Degenhardt said his favorite part about giving tours is getting scared when something unexpected happens.

His second favorite thing is helping people have a good time, whether they believe in ghosts or not.

Farmington native Carrie Charley, a self-described ghost enthusiast, took the tour for her birthday on Oct. 16.

“I thought I felt something with the Hatchet Lady (one of the 13 ghosts),” she said. “And my husband found some orbs on his camera.”

Charley said she found the experience very enjoyable, to the delight of Degenhardt.

“I always hope guests get an enjoyment of things that happened in the afterlife,” he said. “And that they see that there is fun to be had by being a little bit scared, but nothing traumatizing.”

For paranormal society, Halloween just another day

By Jenna Stoff While trick-or-treaters may be dressing up as ghosts this Halloween, the Duke City Paranormal Research Society will be hunting for actual ghosts.

The trio has investigated local businesses and homes believed to be haunted since February 2014.

This is the time of year the team reflects on past experiences and plans for future trips in and out of New Mexico.

Team cameraman Ed Sather and his wife, Sara, moved to Albuquerque from Seabrook, Texas in 2009. With a shared interest in the paranormal, they met lead investigator Phillip Ray, who has conducted investigations for 14 years. Together they formed The Duke City Paranormal Research Society.

Starting his own group was something Ray said he always wanted to do, so a good friend and fellow paranormal researcher in California helped him get on the right track.

“I’m a truck driver by trade, but I have many hobbies and the paranormal is one of them,” Ray said. “I want to do this for science and research legitimately so that the skeptics understand that we are real.”

Sara Sather is responsible for research and going through archives.

“I love history,” she said. “When I go to a property, I want to know who was here before, so I do the research behind it.”

She said being a ghost hunter comes with its challenges, espe-

cially when certain businesses restrict investigations.

“Some people really don’t want to be a part of it,” she said.

“It may not be that they don’t believe [in ghosts]; maybe they don’t want their hotel to be thought of as haunted.”

The first step in the ghosthunting process is screening calls and conducting background research. Ray said it’s dangerous for people to take matters into their own hands, which is why he asks clients if they’ve used Tarot cards, Ouija boards or other means to contact spirits before deciding to investigate.

If he feels comfortable, Ray said he likes to “debunk,” or attempt to find causes for mysterious phenomena. His main job is to check for things that might explain a “haunting” such as electrical wires, hidden animals or holes in the walls.

If something can’t be explained, the team starts investigating using cameras, electromagnetic “K2” meters, REM pods and recorders to try and capture Electronic Voice Phenomena.

“We just use a regular Nikon camera and an SB-11 box, which sweeps radio frequencies,” Ed Sather said.

Notable places the team has walked through include the Schaffer Hotel, St. James Hotel, Luna Mansion and the Belen Harvey House. They also traveled to Cripple Creek, Colorado in May to explore the former mining town.

“The prime time to be ghost hunting is during the “Witching Hour,” between 1 and 3 a.m.,” Ed Sather said.

He said he was in the basement of a local jail with two other paranormal research groups when his equipment stopped working.

“We were asking questions using the K2 meter,” he said. “We played the recorder and heard three whistles and after the third one, there was a little growl and then it died.”

The team plans to head back to Cripple Creek next month to investigate a private residence.

Ray said he would love to get the chance to tour the state prison in Santa Fe in the near future as well.

His sister, LaToya Lazoya, is a senior at UNM. Like Ray, she said she is interested in the paranormal and has joined the group for a few investigations, one being the Luna Mansion in Los Lunas.

“I’m 26 years old and I still kind of get freaked out by the dark,” Lazoya said.

She said that some of the old buildings at UNM would be interesting to check out at night, after they are closed.

“I’ve always wanted to sit in Zimmerman (Library) and Johnson Gym,” she said. “Sometimes you just get weird feelings.”
