Anne Hillerman to participate in Anaya lecture

Southwest stories have always intrigued Rudolfo Anaya, which is why the famous writer’s annual lecture will feature fiction writer and food columnist Anne Hillerman for this year’s iteration.

The daughter of Tony Hillerman will speak on behalf of the UNM English Department and Anaya, a professor emeritus at the University.

The English department created the annual lecture in 2010, but Thursday’s lecture will be the first time a fiction writer is featured as the speaker. Melina Vizcaino-Aleman, an assistant professor in the English department, said she is excited about introducing the first genre fiction writer among the presenters since the lecture series started.

“We invited her because there is all of this activity in the scholarly community around the Hillerman name,” VizcainoAleman said. “We wanted to capitalize on that and bring more attention to the event itself. But it’s also a way to open up the lecture series to genre fiction.”

Tony Hillerman’s works are being digitized this fall, allowing easy access to scholars, which was just one of the reasons Vizcaino-Aleman decided to invite Anne Hillerman to speak at the event.

“We’re also trying to raise money,” Vizcaino-Aleman said.

“We have two funds: We have a lecture Anaya series fund, which

funds the lecture series, it’s a spending account; we have another fund in (Rudolfo) Anaya’s name, and it’s a fellowship fund and we’re trying to get that endowed.”

According to Vizcaino-Aleman, the fellowship fund needs to reach $2,500, which would award a Hispanic undergraduate or graduate student to help them continue their collegiate career. Vizcaino-Aleman said she hopes the award would lean toward Southwest studies, but can be awarded to anyone in the English department.

She said she has been chair of the speaker selection committee since 2012, and has been on the committee since it began five years ago.

“Rudy is just excited that there is interest surrounding southwest literature and southwest writers,” Vizcaino-Aleman said. “Any attention and appreciation that we’re bringing to that, he’s all for it.”

Although Anaya is not going to be in attendance, VizcainoAleman said that he wants to be involved in his annual series as much as possible.

Hillerman and Anaya have both signed posters that will be auctioned off to help fund the series or the fellowship.

Vizcaino-Aleman said donors will be able to choose which fund they want to support.

She said anyone who contributes at least $100 will also receive a poster signed by both authors.

Vizcaino-Aleman said Anne Hillerman is excited and honored to be the 2015 lecturer in the newest addition of the lecture series, at time when all her father’s works will be available to their widest audience yet.

“There’s a lot of activity going

around the Hillerman name this fall. There’s the launching of the eHillerman portal, which is an initiative through the library where they are digitizing all of his archival collections, posting them online and making them more accessible for folks doing research or people just interested in his work,” Vizcaino-Aleman said,

Hillerman will be presenting in room 101 of George Pearl Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The lecture is free to everyone who attends.

I’ve seen the whole Rocky series at least 15 times, “Rocky IV” at least 70. Rocky embodies dedication, commitment, drive and tenacity.

My whole life my mother taught me that success takes work, but it’s attainable.

Heck, if it could happen for a southpaw from Philadelphia it could happen for me, right?

Well, here’s hoping.

School can be hard. Eating full meals at reasonable times can be hard. Life can be a

challenge. But that doesn’t mean success is impossible, and it doesn’t mean that the difficulties to reach the goal line aren’t worth it.

As your student government we can’t promise you the world. But what we can do, we will do. We want to help you be successful in whatever ways we can.

This week we are dedicated to your success. We will be doing everything from hosting informational fairs to giving away freebies to help you get through the week.

State briefs Udall discusses energy, job creation SILVER CITY — As part of a southwest New Mexico tour, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall visited Silver City on Oct. 16, eating lunch and chairing a meeting of the Southwest New Mexico Energy and Green Jobs Task Force at Western New Mexico University.

When Udall arrived around noon, he visited with Diane Barrett of Diane’s Restaurant, presenting her with a copy of a national resolution he helped sponsor, declaring October as National Women’s Small Business Month.

After the brief lunch at Diane’s, Udall quickly transitioned to the Southwest New Mexico Energy and Green Jobs Task Force at WNMU, where he met with area officials to hear about their successes and struggles regarding energy and job creation.

Mary Stoecker, the energy task force facilitator, said the plan was

created five years ago, and although not every area has the same needs or views, it is a great way to collaborate on the Southwest’s issues.

Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments Executive Director Priscilla Lucero said the task force has received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Agency to improve renewable energy sources and create jobs.

“Thank you for taking this on,” Udall said.

Mayor takes responsibility for rate hike LORDSBURG — There was a full house at the City Council meeting Oct. 8, with local residents on hand because of the recent utility rate hike.

While the issue was on the agenda, Mayor Clark Smith did not address the issue until the end of the meeting, when he said the city cannot

continue to use general funds to cover the utility shortfall. The city did this in years past and it is quickly depleting city coffers— to the point that the New Mexico Department of Finance has threatened to step in and manage the budget if the city cannot.

“If we continue to deplete our funds,” said Smith, “We will be forced to close the swimming pool and the Special Events Center and will not be able to support local agencies such as the senior center and the library.”

He went on to explain how federal mandates and increased electric usage at the Wastewater Treatment Plant have put a huge strain on the city’s budget.

Then he addressed the recent rate increase — an increase that had many Lordsburg residents fuming over bills that were double and sometimes triple what they were accustomed to paying before the rate hike.

“I take full responsibility for that,” Smith said. “The council can only vote on the information

they are provided with.”

“This council is a group of dedicated, responsible people,” he said. “You elected the right people for this job.”

‘Bucketload of money’ spent on sewer EDGEWOOD — An asset management plan took a look at Edgewood’s wastewater system and concluded that it would cost what engineer Raymond Dennis described as “a bucketload of money” to keep it operating.

In addition, the plant is past the point that would automatically trigger an expansion according to rules of the state’s environment department.

The sewer system was put into place for businesses initially, as a way to spur economic development in Edgewood. Previous planning by the town was to add residential customers to the mix at some point.

Dennis said “the town of Edgewood has a relatively new

multimillion-dollar facility that serves 23 commercial customers. The fact that the system is used exclusively by businesses, many of them restaurants, may be part of the reason that the system is not functioning as it should, Dennis said.

For example, the wastewater treatment system includes 600 membranes for filtering solids out. The estimated lifetime of each membrane is six years, but in Edgewood’s system they are lasting about a year because the membranes are being rinsed out with citric acid.

The capacity of the current plant should be around 50,000 to 56,000 gallons a day, but “actual numbers” for the plant are a capacity of about half that, Dennis said.

He added that the groundwater discharge permit Edgewood has from the state environment department “stipulates a trigger point for expansion at about 75 percent of capacity,” Dennis said.

Female Rangers incite discussion in Army

Walking across campus with a backpack full of heavy textbooks can be exhausting after a long day of classes. An Indiana University study from 2013 found that collegeaged women who reported back and shoulder pain had backpacks that, on average, weighed between 15 and 20 pounds.

For the first female soldiers ever going through Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia, however, walking around with a backpack weighing upwards of 50 pounds is just part of the daily grind.

On Aug. 21, 26-year-old Capt.

Kristen Griest and 25-year-old 1st Lt. Shaye Haver made history by becoming the first females to graduate from Army Ranger School, which has been in existence since the early 1950s. On Friday they were joined by 37-year-old Maj. Lisa Jaster.

However, the U.S. Army is currently investigating the legitimacy of the women’s success in their train-

ing, as rumors have begun circulating that they may have received “special treatment” for their gender.

According to People Magazine, Rep. Steve Russell, R-Okla., a Ranger School graduate and 21-year Army veteran, sent a letter to Secretary of the Army John McHugh last month requesting proof of the two women’s paperwork and test scores from their time in Ranger School. People Magazine stated an anonymous “Capitol Hill source” told them that Russell’s letter was written after rumors sparked that the women had received “special treatment” and “played by different rules.”

The Rangers are among the most agile and flexible special operations forces in the U.S. military, composed of infantry soldiers that specialize in air operations, reconnaissance and direct combat, according to army.mil.

days long, and that soldiers get five hours of sleep or fewer each night while consuming no more than 2,200 calories a day throughout training. The Fort Benning Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade official website states that the school had a 58 percent failure rate between the 2010 and 2014 fiscal years.

UNM Army ROTC Recruiting Operations Officer Erik Sevigny said that the parameters for Ranger School have changed over the years. Sevigny, a retired Army veteran who graduated from Ranger School in 1990, said that change is inevitable in the Army.

“I think Ranger School is one of those things where if you don’t modify the standards, I don’t care who goes through,” Sevigny said.

“I know plenty of men who can’t make it through Ranger School.

If the course remains intact, if we don’t adjust the standards or give special treatment to anybody, whether it’s women or men who can’t pass, then who cares?”

Sevigny said that the Army is part of America’s “social fabric,” and that

social changes should not impact the standards that all soldiers are held to.

“I’ve been on campus for ten years now and I’ve had a couple female cadets come through our program who would absolutely be phenomenal infantry soldiers,” Sevigny said. “Were they capable of meeting the standard? Absolutely.”

2nd Lt. Ashley Nguyen, a former UNM Army ROTC cadet who is now with the New Mexico Army National Guard, said that the accomplishments of Griest, Haver and Jaster have motivated her in her military career.

“These women have most certainly inspired me to not hold myself to a lower standard just because I am a female, and to pursue things even if no one has done it before,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen said that although the female graduates’ accomplishments have been motivational to women in the military, her own feelings about women in combat roles are mixed.

“The idea of women being physically, mentally strong and being given the opportunity to put boots on

the ground is incredibly exciting, don’t get me wrong,” Nguyen said, “but I also feel that combat roles have been successful in the past because women are not a ... factor. We will just have to see how it goes.”

According to the New York Times, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter has until Jan. 1 to decide whether to open up all combat-related jobs to women in all U.S. military branches.

CNN stated that if the military decides to do so, the U.S. would join at least 16 other industrialized countries that already allow women to serve in combat.

Nguyen said that could open up new opportunities for her in the future.

“These women have shown me not to give up after you fall down, but to keep trying. Who knows, maybe I might follow in their footsteps and attend Army Ranger School,” Nguyen said.

Neal’s Lobo Louie dance electrifies crowd

By Thomas Romero-Salas Craig Neal definitely knows how to make an entrance.

At the annual Lobo Howl, the men’s basketball team began its portion with Lobo Louie dancing through the decades to various hit songs. The crowd of 6,676 erupted when Louie took off his head to reveal himself as the team’s head coach.

Only a handful of people knew that Neal was going to come out as Lobo Louie. Not even his own team knew that he would start off the Howl in a costume.

“I knew all of them (the dances). I just didn’t think I could do all of them,” Neal said after the Howl on Friday at WisePies Arena, aka The Pit. “We had it to 15, and that was too much. I could only go two minutes in that suit. I thought it was funny because the guys had no idea.”

It wasn’t the first time that Neal made his presence felt at a Howl.

Two years ago, during Neal’s first Howl as head coach, he came down The Pit ramp on a custom motorcycle that got the crowd going. Last year, Neal didn’t make a big entrance, but he did shave his head in front of the fans to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

“I came up with it because it’s kind of hard to repeat the motorcycle deal,” Neal said. “... I can’t rappel from the ceiling. I don’t think they’ll let me ride a cyborg down there or let me drive a car down there.”

After a couple of warm-up drills, the 3-point contest was held. The

participants were guards Cullen Neal, Jordan Hunter, Anthony Mathis and Elijah Brown.

Mathis showed off his shooting skill by having the highest unofficial scores in both rounds. He ended up beating out Cullen Neal in the finals to win the contest.

A few minutes after the 3-point contest, Craig Neal, who was mic’d up during the Howl, said UNM will not have a shooting problem as it did last year.

“I don’t mind shots as long as they’re good shots. I don’t mind distance of shots as long as they’re open shots,” Craig Neal said. “I’m sure there will be some shots that some have taken two or three in a row, and they’re going to have a heat check.

That’s one way to open up scoring if you can spread the floor.”

The dunk contest followed shortly after, and guard Xavier Adams stole the show. The highlight dunk of Adams was when he took a bounce pass from guard Tim Jacobs, who was up in the crowd, and slammed it home to seal the win.

Later in the dunk contest, Adams put on a Texas state flag and wore it like a cape for one of his dunks. Adams celebrated his victory by throwing a shoe into the stands.

“It’s fun. It’s supposed to be entertaining,” Craig Neal said. “We’re supposed to be entertaining the fans.

We have the best fans in the country and they come out for a practice.”

Winner-winner Stevie Burns, a freshman nursing major, will have her next semester’s books paid for by Craig Neal.

Freshmen get their first taste of WisePies

To get the freshmen acclimated to the ambiance of WisePies Arena, aka The Pit, everyone is required to take part in the annual dance at the Lobo Howl. Barring injury, this is non-negotiable.

For incoming freshman guard Emily Lines, the dance was the most worrisome part of her introduction to New Mexico fans.

“I am not a dancer at all. They really had to convince me to be a part of it,” Lines joked. “... I didn’t think it would be, but it ended up being a lot of fun.”

The team looked much more comfortable out on the dance floor this year than in years past. Senior forward Khadijah Shumpert said it was because the team rehearsed the dance a lot more this year.

“It took a lot of practice, that’s for sure,” Shumpert said. “We practiced it for about three weeks or so after practice. It came out well, I think; I haven’t seen it yet on video, but it felt good.”

Country, hip-hop and a little bit of rock n’ roll guided the team in front of 6,676 riled-up fans. The team collectively comes together with a list of songs, which later get voted in by the team, Shumpert said.

One of the purposes for the Howl is to get the freshmen used to the home crowd, head coach Yvonne Sanchez said in one of the team’s first practices. Lines said her emotions were unlike any she had felt in her life.

“It’s a crazy feeling. The crowd is loud, people are excited, just coming into a bright arena is unlike anything else,” Lines said. “Now I’m really looking forward to the season.”

Before the Howl, the entire team is interviewed to give the fans a few facts about the individuals’ personalities. Some players were able to recite their favorite New Mexican foods, others did impressions, and, of course, most presented their personal

interpretations of a howl.

Although Lines pleaded with Lobo TV to not use her howl, she said her embarrassment was subdued by the overall excitement of the night.

Sanchez did away with the 3-pointer contest because she said there was a lack of interest from the fan base. However, the team was able to showcase a five-on-five halfcourt scrimmage on both halves of the court.

“I was really happy we got to do the five-on-five,” Shumpert said. “We were trying to convince coach to a little fullcourt, but she’s not quite ready for that yet. It was really good to just get out there and go against each other in front of fans and stuff so they can see what we’re working with.”

Aside from a few miscues, the Lobos seemed to be relatively relaxed for the initial

presentation of the 2015-2016 campaign.

“I definitely think the freshmen really realize what The Pit can be like when the games come,” Shumpert said. “I think they’re ready, and so are we.”

Lobo women crush field in Wisconsin Five of five runners finish in top ten for record-breaking team score

By Robert Maler If anyone is questioning the No. 1 ranking of the New Mexico women’s cross country team, they are still searching for reasonable doubt.

The UNM women’s cross country team not only took first place at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, but it dominated the field in the sixkilometer race and won by 156 points. The Lobo men, meanwhile, finished in 23rd place.

Courtney Frerichs, Rhona Auckland, Calli Thackery and Alice Wright swept fourth through seventh place, all finishing within four seconds of each other. Molly Renfer came in 10th place, just 12 seconds after that group.

It’s hard to imagine the women’s team could improve upon its last performance, but the results showed the women’s success over the field. In fact, the women were so dominant that they set a new meet record with a team score of 32 points, crushing the previous meet record of 78 points.

Head coach Joe Franklin said the plan was for all the competitors to run as a team and communicate with each other.

And, of course, he said he wanted the team to have fun.

“They ran really well. They were supportive of each other. They did a great job,” Franklin said.

The men’s team had a strong finish to the race, making up ground on the competition.

Dan Milechman finished 59th in the eight-kilometer race, Elmar Engholm 84th, Graham Thomas 109th, finishing within 15 seconds of each other. The men improved the overall time between runners, with less than 27 seconds separating runners

one through five.

Franklin said it was fair to say this meet would be a good indicator of where the program is at because of the depth of the field. For the women, 20 of the top 25 programs were in Wisconsin to compete, and 17 of the top 25 were present for the men.

“The men keep getting better and better. They’re going in

the right direction and they’re running hard,” Franklin said. “We have a shot to be really good by the end of the year.”

Boise State’s Allie Ostrander finished in first place for the women, followed by Molly Seidel from Notre Dame and Dominique Scott from Arkansas. The women’s field consisted of 246 runners.

On the men’s side, 244 runners competed with Tulsa’s Marc Scott posting the best time at 23:35.0.

Justyn Knight from Syracuse finished 2nd, and two more of his teammates finished in the top 10, which allowed them to capture the victory with a team score of 101 points.

The Lobos will next travel to Reno, Nevada to compete in

the NCAA Mountain West Cross Country Championships. The event takes place on Oct, 30. The men will run eight kilometers at 11:00, and the women six kilometers at 11:45 Mountain Time.

Apodoca proves himself in game-winning drive

By Thomas Romero-Salas Quarterback Austin Apodaca proved he’s ready for any situation.

After sitting on the bench the entire game, Apodaca was inserted into the game to construct an 80-yard drive with just 2:14 left in the game and the Lobos trailing Hawaii 27-21.

The Lobos had the opportunity to win the game after Hawaii missed a short field goal attempt that would have sealed the victory.

Apodaca came through when he hit wide receiver Dameon Gamblin for a 28-yard touchdown off a double-move for a 28-27 win over Hawaii at University Stadium on Saturday. The quarterback finished the drive 6 of 10 for 70 yards.

“I just tried to stay focused the whole game. Whether or not I got my number called I didn’t know, but I can’t control that,” Apodaca said. “But when I did, I just tried to make the most of my opportunities. I went in there in the huddle and we were all confident

in our abilities and I had no doubt from the first play in the huddle that we were going to go down and score because of the look in all the guys’ eyes.”

For most of the game, it looked like UNM (4-3, 2-1 Mountain West) would suffer a letdown after making several mistakes. The Lobos hurt themselves with two turnovers — one of which was inside Hawaii’s 5-yard line — and with penalties at different moments.

UNM killed one of its own fourth quarter drives when, on fourth-and-1, quarterback Lamar Jordan was forced onto one knee to corral a low snap, but the Lobos converted the short-yardage situation. The refs didn’t see Jordan hit his knee at first but after a review it was ruled he was down.

“Honestly, my first thought right now is that we have to get better. We have to get better,” head coach Bob Davie said. “Before we talk about the good things, I think you just have to go through and see

Strong second-half defense secures Lobos victory

“It was personal. We couldn’t cover them. The kid (running back Paul Harris) was running up and down the field on us.”

It was indeed a gloomy start for the Lobos. Hawaii had not yet scored a single point while playing on the road, but managed to take the opening drive down the field to score a touchdown.

Davie said the opening touchdown took the wind out of the Lobos’ sails. Even though wide receiver Carlos Wiggins was able to answer immediately with a 100-yard touchdown return to tie the game, Davie said the drive was detrimental.

In both contests the Lobos found themselves trailing on the way into the locker room, desperate to make some sort of stand to ignite the offense. Davie said that in both games the Lobos didn’t need to make any adjustments, but the

Lobos cruise past Fresno state in 5-1 victory

By J.R. Oppenheim Head Coach Heather Dyche called Friday’s overtime loss particularly hard because it had been the best New Mexico has played this year. The Lobos made sure on Sunday that their best resulted in a win.

UNM’s offense clicked into a gear not seen since the Sept. 3 Idaho State game, scoring three firsthalf goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Fresno State at the UNM Soccer Complex. The game saw the most Lobo goals scored this season, and the most they’ve had since netting four against the Bengals during nonconference play.

“I think this is the best weekend we’ve had all year,” Dyche said.

“We’re finally starting to have an identity on how we want to attack and a real clear sense of what roles and responsibilities are, where balls need to go, and we’re picking the more dangerous option.”

The win salvages a key weekend for the Lobos (7-7-1, 5-2-1 MW).

Friday’s 2-1 OT loss was to a San Jose State team tied atop the Mountain West standings, and two other tough Mountain West schools — Colorado College and San Diego State — are still on the horizon.

UNM remains in third place in the conference standings behind SDSU and SJSU, who played each other on Sunday. The Lobos stayed ahead of Colorado College by one point.

UNM maintained a balanced offense throughout with five different players scoring goals, three of whom had two players providing assists on them.

Forward Quincy Slora, who had an unassisted goal against Colorado State last week, posted a goal and two assists against Fresno State.

“I think we are going up a steady slope and peaking at the right time,” Slora said. “People are talking about us and a little bit intimidated to play us by the way the results have been and the way we are showing on the field. The result shows we’re competing and coming together as a team.”

In addition to its potent offense, the UNM defense also withstood a feisty Fresno State attack. The Bulldogs actually outshot New Mexico 21-14 (13-9 in the first

UNM had no more than two goals in any game other than the Idaho State outing, including six 1-goal contests.

“From previous weekends, we knew what we needed to do,” defender Emily Chavez said. “I think we were more composed, less worried about making mistakes, and I think we looked like we were having more fun. It was fun to play.”

The Lobo offense opened the game swinging in the first half, attacking the Fresno State goal with two strong scoring opportunities from forward Lindsey Guice and midfielder Claire Lynch (both saved by Fresno State goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann).

O’Connor on the near side passed to Lynch, and she sent the ball high over goalkeeper Berwinkel-Kottmann.

The goal put Lynch into a tie for the team lead in goals with forward Madisyn Olguin (three), but only for about two minutes. Olguin scored her fourth of the season moments later on the near corner of the net off defender/midfielder Brooke Webster’s assist.

Forward Korynn Blanksma capped the first-half scoring eruption at the 60-minute mark, this time off assists by Olguin and Slora.

Olguin dumped the ball to Blanksma on a breakaway run to the net, and converted her first goal of 2015.

Guice and Slora continued the scoring in the second half. Slora chipped in an assist for Guice, who scored on a hard shot to the upper right corner.

Ten minutes later with help from defender Victoria Archuleta and forward Ruth Bruciaga, Slora added a goal to her two assists when she took a long crossing pass

and shot from inside the box for her third score of the year.

“Quincy’s a smart player,” Dyche said. “She thinks, and anything that we talk about in the locker room or work on in training she implements it into the game. She’s being rewarded for her hard work and her effort. It’s certainly coming at the right time.”

Fresno State mustered its goal late in the game after New Mexico made substitutions to get players more field time, including at goalkeeper. Midfielder/forward Myra Delgadillo scored at the 87:36 mark with assists from midfielder Maria Gomez and defender Sara Jo Ciapponi.

By Liam Cary-Eaves Head Coach Jeff Nelson’s newly added zone blocking scheme has rejuvenated New Mexico’s defensive muscle, translating to a jumpstart in the Lobos’ offense.

For the first time since Oct. 6, 2011, the Lobos garnered a home victory over the UNLV Rebels.

Coming into Saturday’s 3-1 victory, New Mexico had a 1-5 record for the previous six meetings between the clubs.

Nelson changed UNM’s fortunes by implementing a defensive scheme that made the Lobos less predictable, he said.

“Last year they got us twice, so we got them back finally, and they’re a great team,” Nelson said.

“They’re really well-coached, and Bree Hammel is as good of a middle (blocker) as there is in the league. We’re excited when we can get a win against outstanding players like that.”

Chaos, confusion and mismatches allowed the Lobos to throw a block party in the first set, batting six balls down at the net to UNLV’s one. UNM (11-9, 4-3 MW) held the Rebels to just a .083 hitting percentage in the first set while the squad was able to blow past UNLV’s

particularly successful in the past two games with New Mexico’s new defensive strategy. Middle blocker Skye Gullatt said the change has opened up a wide array of shots for the middles, giving both herself and Simone Henderson more room to work with.

“The transition work has been really what has been getting us,” Gullatt said. “Hannah (Johnson) has been forcing it to us from five to ten feet off the net, and it opens up the block, spreads everything out and gets the offense a little more smooth.”

The new scheme keeps the opposing defense honest. Without knowing where big blockers Cassie House or Julia Warren are, the defense can no longer sit on the middle attack, spreading opponents out at the net.

“I think our lineup is good here,” Gullatt said. “I think it’s working for us.”

Whether or not the Lobos found the right key to their lineup, Nelson said he is obviously going to stick with what’s working.

Running back Paul Harris had a solid game for the Warriors with 125 yards on 24 attempts with two

touchdowns. Woolsey finished 13 of 25 for 195 yards and a touchdown.

Carlos Wiggins returned a first quarter kickoff 100 yards that tied the game at 7-all. That return gave him five for his career on kickoff returns for a Mountain West and school record.

The backup quarterback marched the Lobos down the field to take the first lead of the second half. However, he would ask his defense to make one last stand with 55 seconds left in the contest.

Crosby answered Apodaca’s request with his second interception of the contest in the final stage of the game, allowing Apodaca to

take a knee.

“I think it was a big moment as a team just to finish a game like that.

Not give up, you know; we were down a lot of the game,” Apodaca said.

Although all four sets were close, the Lobo defense certainly played tight, which was encouraging for the Lobos who have been in search of a consistent lineup.

“I think it feels really comfortable. Everyone has really good energy, and even the transitions of subs coming in and out ... are smooth,” House said. “Hopefully this is our lineup, and hopefully we take this a long way.”

Inconsistency has been a major theme for the Lobos while Nelson has given many different looks to many different lineups. However, if the Lobos’ new blocking scheme’s success is any indication of things to come, it’s hard to think he will stray too far from what is working.
