Young farmers bring fresh ideas to local market

By Liam Cary-Eaves For some, growing vegetables is a job. For others, it may be a hobby.

For Silver Leaf Farms, it’s a way of life.

Co-owners Aaron and Elan Silverblatt-Buser have been promoting the use of local produce for six seasons by producing and selling to local growers markets, restaurants and grocery stores.

It wasn’t until two months ago that the brothers decided to take the next step to better the Albuquerque community by reducing the team’s carbon footprint. Silver Leaf Farms has now expanded its business to be open year-round with hydroponic plants, and chose to install 20 solar panels in order to help minimize energy waste.

“We’re really excited, not only to provide quality produce to the Albuquerque area, Santa Fe and potentially the four corners area, but to do that in the most sustainable way we can,” Aaron Silverblatt-Buser said. “To be able to offset a significant amount of the electricity that we use through our state’s most abundant resource, solar energy, is really exciting.”

The Silverblatt-Busers are still in the process of finishing the 10,000-square-foot greenhouse, but they already have several rows of tomatoes growing inside. By using artificial wind and shelter to protect the plants from Albuquerque’s unforgiving elements, the brothers said they expect to get two to three times as much product while maintaining their organic grow.

ry of the UNM Business Plan Competition, and will use it to help fund the farm’s newest hydroponic adventure.

The installation of the solar power system ended up costing $18,090.

However, with help from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the farm received a $4,522 grant to cover 25 percent of the building cost. The funding came through USDA Rural Development’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).

The REAP was used to generate interest from farmers, ranchers

and small rural businesses to gain access to these type of loan guarantees, according to a release put out by the USDA. State Director for USDA Rural Development Terry Brunner, speaking to a gathering at Silver Leaf Farms, said the integration of solar power not only helps the farm’s carbon footprint, but also works to promote a healthy community in New Mexico.

“We’re trying to get more fresh and nutritious produce into our public schools,” Brunner said. “An arrangement with the Bernalillo

Schools makes it so that kids are introduced to the salad greens and other produce grown here.”

Aaron Silverblatt-Buser said that when he envisioned this project years ago, he never dreamed that it would eventually take such a drastic step into the general health of adolescents in APS. “From my experience growing up, going to public schools, there was no local food and things like that, so their interest in that was kind of news to us, and great news to us,” he said. “To be able to pro-

vide this quality of food to people with less opportunity and really support the health of the community is just awesome.”

Elan and Aaron Silverblatt-Buser are now in a position to change the trajectory from the highly processed foods that currently dominate public schools by offering organic vegetables grown on Albuquerque’s soil.

Brunner said it is a nice change of pace to present the award to a younger generation of farmers. The average age of farmers in New Mexico is 65 years old.

Elan Silverblatt-Buser said it is an honor to receive recognition as a younger farmer, but said it wouldn’t be possible without the entire community coming together to promote local production.

“The whole project doesn’t happen unless all members of the community are involved,” he said.

“Working with the University, all of our labor, our contractors, our electricians, are all local. All the food, the most important part, the food that we produce is all sold, prepared and eaten locally.”

Elan Silverblatt-Buser said the continuous support has been gratifying, and he continues to count on it while the local growers’ business continues to blossom.

“That’s really what it’s all about.

We’re not in the game to start shipping food to New York, to try to compete in that game,” Elan Silverblatt-Buser said. “The whole foundation of the business is to keep the community involved.”

Homecoming traditions not lost in college

In high school, Homecoming was always something many students looked forward to. The week before Homecoming was an eventful time to celebrate pride in the school and the football team, elect the Homecoming Court and, of course, participate in the Homecoming dance.

These traditions were something that many of us took part in, at least to some degree, and were sad to see end. Well, there’s no need to fret because the University of New Mexico has some wonderful Homecoming traditions as well.

Homecoming week is packed with spirit events, pep rallies and, of course, the Homecoming Football Game. ASUNM, in partnership with the Alumni Association, hosts a myriad of events that change each year based on the theme of Homecoming, as well as many events that are traditions for our campus.

This year, the Homecoming theme is “Live Lobo and Prosper,” based on

Star Trek. Both ASUNM and the Alumni Association have worked tirelessly to create a Homecoming week that is filled with events for everyone at UNM, so make sure to check out the schedule and celebrate Homecoming week with your fellow Lobos!

Monday, Oct. 12: Do you love UNM? Well, stop by the SUB Atrium between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for ‘I Heart UNM Day’ and show us how much you really love the University of New Mexico.

A GPSA Open House at 4 p.m. and the Ph.D. movie showing in the SUB Theater at 6 p.m. will follow.

running for Homecoming King and Queen this year. In fact, we have 17 of them! On Wednesday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., you will have your chance to vote for the 2015 King and Queen. Head to the SUB to cast your vote for the ones you believe represent UNM in the best of ways, or log on to MyUNM between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and utilize the first-ever online voting system. There will also be a photo booth in the SUB Atrium between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., followed by the IFC Cookoff in the SUB Ballrooms at 6 p.m.

Finally, our entire week comes to fruition with the UNM v. Hawaii football game at University Stadium with kickoff at 5 p.m.

Come out and support the Lobos, and at halftime watch as the Homecoming King and Queen of 2015 are officially crowned.

ASUNM Lobo Spirit, Elections Commission, and the Alumni Association all deserve a huge round of applause for their valiant efforts to make this week a great one for the University of New Mexico. “I didn’t even know it was next week, to be honest. It’s definitely more of a high school thing. I’d probably interested (in checking out homecoming events). Depends on what the events are, if there’s something I’m interested in.”

“It is (something that interests me). There’s cool activities to get involved in and, I don’t know, it’s just a good time to hang out with people.”

“It was definitely bigger deal in high school than it is in college, but I guess it’s still something definitely cool that I wish more college campuses got into. I feel like it’s still definitely worth doing, it’s definitely a cool activity for everyone on campus and a cool week for everybody. It definitely brings out the school spirit.”

Missed opportunities lead to Lobo defeat

By Thomas Romero-Salas New Mexico had its fair share of chances at Nevada.

However, the Lobos weren’t able to take advantage of those opportunities in a 35-17 loss to the Wolf Pack in Reno, Nevada on Saturday.

The missed opportunity that ended any chance of a Lobo comeback came when wide receiver Dameon Gamblin fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line as he was fighting for a touchdown. Nevada recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback, making the score 28-17 going into the fourth quarter.

UNM’s defense also blew several chances to stop Nevada’s offense that might have given them another shot at a comeback. The Lobos hurt themselves with penalties and missed tackles.

“They made some plays. I know that sounds over simplistic, but that’s exactly what I talked with my team about,” head coach Bob Davie said.

“We did some good things, and they did some good things. They did more good things.”

A major problem for UNM’s defense was Nevada’s running back combination of Don Jackson and James Butler. As a team Nevada had 351 rushing yards, and almost 300 of those yards came from Jackson (152 yards) and Butler (145 yards and a touchdown).

The Lobos (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West) missed numerous tackles against the Wolf Pack that led to big gains or touchdowns.

“In the end, we couldn’t consistently tackle the backs enough. We couldn’t even tackle the receivers enough,” Davie said. “... I thought we got exposed tonight with some physical backs and some physical players on both sides of the ball.”

UNM’s offense wasn’t able to find a rhythm, either. The Lobos finished with just 273 yards of total offense, with 135 of those yards coming on the ground. The running attack produced just 3.6 yards per carry for UNM, compared to a 6.5 yards-per-carry average for Nevada.

Quarterback Lamar Jordan pushed back a NMSU defenseman Oct. 3 at University Stadium. The Lobos lost to Nevada 17-35 this past Saturday and play the University of Hawaii Oct. 17.

The issue for the Lobos was the inability to run the ball between the tackles. Nevada (3-3, 1-1 MW) took away the pitch, forcing UNM to run up the middle, where the team wasn’t able to produce.

“We never really had much going on offense at all,” Davie said. “We’re not quite physical enough inside yet to do it. Against the good teams, we’re not good enough to run the ball up in there.”

In the fourth quarter, Davie inserted Austin Apodaca at quarterback.

Apodaca looked the best he had all season, completing a series of bubble screens to Gamblin that set up the fumble in the red zone.

Overall, Apodaca finished 10 of 12 for 82 yards and an interception.

“You can see, if we can spread it out a little bit, what that does for us,” Davie said. “(Apodaca) came in and did some good things for us.”

Nevada quarterback Tyler Stewart didn’t have much trouble with UNM’s defense. He finished 16 of 19 for 166 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 57 yards and two scores.

“They came out and adjusted to the defense. They knew where the blitz was coming from, where the linebackers were coming from,” cornerback Cranston Jones said. “They were doing a lot of talking and com-

municating well. We just didn’t make as many plays as we needed to.”

Tailback Teriyon Gipson led UNM with 68 yards on 11 attempts and a score. Cornerback Nias Martin scored on a 77-yard fumble return in the third quarter.

The Lobos have ranked in the top 15 in attendance nationally every season since 2001, when the NCAA began keeping attendance statistics. In 2014, New Mexico ranked eighth with a total of 25,038 spectators in 11 games, and an average of 2,276 per game.

It’s no secret that the Lobos like to see the UNM Soccer Complex packed for home matches. But it’s the job of one guy in particular to get that crowd going.

His name is Travis Campbell, the director of operations for the Lobo men’s soccer program.

During games, Campbell walks around making sure that the show runs smoothly and the fans are having a good time. He carries a backpack filled with Lobo giveaways for the audience.

The crowd goes wild when they hear the word “T-shirt.”

His official responsibilities include in-game promotions, organizing team meals and organizing the Lobo Soccer Academy summer and winter camps.

This is only Campbell’s second season as director of operations, but his history with the Lobos goes a few years back.

Campbell played for the Lobos from 2008 to 2012, but he admits that as a freshman he wasn’t exactly sold on being a Lobo.

“I actually tried to transfer from New Mexico,” he said, “simply because I was being a negative Nancy about every single little piece of life in Albuquerque.”

end of the spring.

“The transition wasn’t as smooth as he probably wanted,” Fishbein said. “I saw potential in him and knew that if he stuck with it, he would achieve really great things.”

Fast forward to 2015, and Campbell’s closet is now 80 percent Lobo stuff. And as fate would have it, he now works side-by-side with Fishbein.

“Every day I wake up and I’m actually excited to be going to work,” Campbell said. “To be honest, half the days I don’t feel like I’m coming to work.”

On the side, Campbell coaches the Rio Rapids Soccer Club’s U-9, U-10 and U-12 teams.

He said coaching is his passion because he wants to help young players take their skills to another level so they can accomplish whatever goals they might have.

“I couldn’t love that any more than I do,” Campbell said. “That’s not work — that’s just fun playtime after work. Getting to hang

out with kids and seeing them develop is just the greatest thing in the world.”

Although Campbell enjoys his life in Albuquerque, he got engaged in August and said he is ready to start thinking about the future.

He said he eventually wants to move back to his hometown in Phoenix, Arizona. But wherever he ends up, Campbell said he wants to keep coaching.

“If I can get to the point where I’m a director of coaching or the director of a club, I think that would be my end goal with the coaching side of things,” he said.

Fishbein said Campbell has come a long way and that he supports whatever he wants to do in the future.

“It’s been exciting working with him,” Fishbein said. “I’m proud of the man he’s become.”

C-USA woes continue with Saturday loss

By Isabel Gonzalez The New Mexico men’s soccer team lost its third Conference USA match 2-0 against the No. 11 Old Dominion Monarchs on Saturday night.

The Lobos have yet to win a conference match this season.

Their regular season was off to a promising start with a 5-1-1 record in the first seven matches. The one loss was against then-No. 1 UCLA. New Mexico was ranked as high as No. 7 in the NCAA Coaches’ Poll this season.

However, the Lobos have dropped three of their last four games. Saturday’s match brought their record to 6-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 C-USA. Old Dominion (7-1-1) proved to be a physical team. The Monarchs had 14 fouls, including three yellow cards. The Lobos only committed six fouls.

New Mexico and Old Dominion recorded 15 shots each, but Old Dominion had more shots on goal, forcing Lobo keeper Jason Beaulieu to make 5 saves throughout the night. The Monarch keeper, Alex Tiesenhausen, only had to make two.

“We had some really good scoring chances, including one in the first two minutes,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said in a statement. “You’re presented with a handful of very good chances each game, and you have to take them. Just like in any sport, you get punished if you make mistakes or don’t capitalize on your chances.”

Early in the game, Lobo forward Niko Hansen had a chance to give his team the lead, but his shot was blocked by the ODU defense.

The first goal for the Monarchs came during the 28th minute. It came from a header by defender David Macsicza, who was assisted by midfielder/forward Jesse Miralrio and midfielder/forward Ivan Militar. This was Macsicza’s first goal for the season.

New Mexico had several chances to score, including a series of three corner kicks in the 79th minute, but the players were not able to convert.

“It’s frustrating, but it’s not lack of effort or quality, it’s just finding the right mix of players and physi-

cal presence and adapting to your opponent a little better,” Fishbein said in a statement.

Fishbein said that to be successful, the Lobos will need to match other teams that are playing “efficient soccer” while at the same time maintaining their quality of play.

UNM will now prepare for its final non-conference match of the

season on Wednesday night, when the team hosts Valparaiso.

The Lobos’ next C-USA game will be next Sunday, when they host the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Lobos swept at Colorado State, Wyoming

New Mexico was swept by Colorado State and Wyoming this past week.

UNM started a new lineup at Wyoming, but the Lobos still fell 0-3 on Saturday as they had on Thursday against CSU. Middle blocker Simone Henderson started at outside hitter, Mercedes Pacheco at libero, and Cassie House was put into the front row late in the match.

The moves weren’t enough to kick start UNM’s offense.

“We keep trying things to mix things up because at times we’ve had streaky performances that have caused us to do it,” head coach Jeff Nelson said in a statement. “... but I did like what we did today with both lineups.”

Despite the moves, UNM (99, 2-3 Mountain West) couldn’t keep up with Wyoming (15-3, 5-1 MW). The Lobos lost 25-19, 2516, 25-19 to the Cowgirls.

“We have to get more output across the board,” Nelson said.

“We’re getting performances from one or two people at a time, but we’re playing teams that are top-25, so we (have) got to have more people step up.”

House earned 11 kills, and setter Hannah Johnson had a double-double for UNM with 31 assists and 18 digs.

UNM hit just .185 compared to Wyoming’s .303.

“Colorado State is a good team,” Nelson said in a release from that game. “They did a lot of really good

things. But we struggled. We struggled on our right and we struggled with some of our left-side attacks. …

We’re just making too many errors.”
