By Liam Cary-Eaves Head coach Jeff Nelson hit a major milestone in his 21st season coaching collegiate volleyball, garnering win No. 400 in a 3-0 sweep against the Broncos on Friday night.

Nelson has made his presence felt throughout his 20-plus years as a head volleyball coach.

In his ninth season as head coach for New Mexico, Nelson has put up an impressive 159-89 record during his tenure.

“It’s great anytime you can put out a great product, and I think Lobo Volleyball is a great product,” Nelson said. “I think when you put out a great product, the community appreciates it.”

While Nelson was able to celebrate on Friday, he has also put in many more hours outside of the college realm. UNM’s head coach was able to guide Albuquerque locals Cassie House, Julia Warren and Devanne Sours through club volleyball and into his program.

“Jeff ’s like a second dad to me ... he’s been with me through high school and everything,” Warren said. “It makes me excited after watching him help all of his play-

ers, me being one of them. It’s really special for him, and the team thinks it’s really special.”

Warren said little has changed from her high school days to the collegiate level. His expectations of her have grown throughout the years, but Warren said that was to be expected as she matured.

Sours said her experience with Nelson has been wonderful. Another product from the club level, Sours has matured into a force to be reckoned with on the outside.

Both Warren and Sours made a trip to Europe with their longtime head coach as members of the Mountain West All-Stars, which is yet another team the three have been part of together.

“It’s really cool to be able to experience (win 400) with him and get to celebrate with him,” Sours said. “He’s really happy, and it’s really cool to be here.”

Although redshirt senior setter Hannah Johnson was not a rooted local in Nelson’s program, she recently entered her fifth season playing for him. Johnson said she commends Nelson for all he has done for her at a personal level.

me,” Johnson said. “I’m glad we could get the win while I was under him, at home.”

“It’s great anytime you can put out a great product, and I think Lobo Volleyball is a great product. I think when you put out a great product, the community appreciates it.”

Senior transfer Simone Henderson said she had made an excellent decision in coming to New Mexico because of what Nelson has been able to do for her.

said Nelson has been able to help them become better players all around. They are not limited to a particular style of play based on their given positions; he expects the girls be able to make use of their diverse strengths at all times.

As well, in just her second season under Nelson, Henderson said it didn’t take the coach long to have an impact on her life outside of the sport.

“He’s taught me about things about life, like things after volleyball,” Henderson said. “He’s a great coach and I’m really glad that I’m here.”

While spectators and fans are able to witness the passion Nelson feels for volleyball, Warren said that is just one side people are able to view.

“Jeff ’s just one of the funniest human beings I’ve ever met,” Warren said. “His sassiness and his jokes, I just love it. He brings a different fire to practice and on road trips.”

Nelson has made it a point of emphasis to find the best local talent in New Mexico and lead them into his program. Johnson said it is much more than being able to find kids that will pro-

duce a winning product at UNM. “He has a really big heart and he tries to get all of New Mexico involved,” Johnson said. “I think he wants to bring out as many girls to come out and love volleyball because he loves it so much.”

Nelson is always reaching out to the thousands of girls in the community to follow and fall in love with his favorite sport, according to Johnson. Nelson said he has built a great fan base upon the foundation that his squad will always fight and will never concede, no matter the circumstance.

“One thing we’ve talked about for years is the fans here will come whether we win or lose if we fight for them,” Nelson said.

“That’s one of our goals the whole nine years that I’ve been here: We want people to leave here feeling like we’ve fought for them.”

Lobos snatch up first season win

The UNM men’s soccer team got its first win of the season Sunday night after defeating No. 19 UC Santa Barbara 2-1.

This win was made possible thanks to junior midfielder Christopher Wehan’s second brace of the weekend.

The first half of tonight’s match was even in shots with six coming from each side. But the Gauchos took a 1-0 lead during the 23rd minute when sophomore forward Ahinga Selemani took a right footed strike from about 22 yards away.

After this goal, the Lobos began attacking more and managed five corner kicks in the next 10 minutes. “[The Gauchos] were good in the first half,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “But then I think we kind of sorted things out and we realized it’s not going to always going to be on our terms. Sometimes you are going to have to battle.”

The Lobos came back strong during the second half getting on the scoreboard in the 66th minute after Josh Goss sent a through ball that found Wehan in the box.

The Lobos continued to pressure UCSB’s defense. In the 69th minute, Niko Hansen took a shot from inside the box, but the ball went slightly too wide.

New Mexico (1-1-1) was looking for a win, not a tie, so they kept pressuring and with less than four minutes remaining, they got the much-needed second goal.

Matt Dorsey won a long ball and sent Wehan a header. Wehan dribbled the ball towards the center of the box and found the back of the net.

“We’d been close on those [headers] the last couple of games,” Wehan said. “I took a chance because Dorsey is incredible in the air. All credit to him winning that header. It fell in the right place, and I just saw and took my chance.”

the second half was a lot stronger that Friday’s.

“We didn’t let Santa Barbara come on to us,” he said. “They didn’t see much of the ball, they didn’t see many chances during the second half.

I think that was the biggest thing. We were on them. We were playing hard.”

Fishbein said he was happy with Wehan’s four goals this weekend, but that eventually he wants to see other guys step up.

But tonight, Fishbein said his team gave a good performance against UCSB (1-1-1) and that this was only the beginning of what could be a great season.

“This was a big-time win,” he said. “I’m proud of the guys. This is something we can build on and carry momentum. Plus we’re

going to get guys back. Yuri (Domiciano) and Sam (Gleadle) will be back full-time next week and get back in the mix. This is a team that’s going to keep getting better and better. I’m really proud of them.”

What capital renewal projects mean for YOU

Over the past few weeks you may have seen the news articles from UNM Newsroom and the Daily Lobo, as well as in the Albuquerque Journal, regarding the capital renewal projects that the University is suggesting. However, phrases like “capital renewal” and “institutional bonds” might be absolute gibberish to you if they are not ideas you have been informed about before, so I am going to do my best to make these concepts clear and understandable to all.

There are 5 capital renewal projects on campus this year. This means that there are 5 buildings/areas on campus that are old, run down, and are in major need of renovation.

These projects include: 1. Physics and Astronomy (PAIS) 2. Johnson Gym 3. Anderson School of Management

4. Smith Plaza 5. Children’s Campus The University has decided that these projects are the main focus for the 20152016 school year. The Physics and Astronomy Interdisciplinary Science building would be relocated to a more central area near the rest of the science buildings on campus, with more state-of-the-art technology to keep the department competitive.

Johnson Gym would undergo the first of three renovations, which would be on the south side of the building, and make changes that include an indoor track, a climbing wall and much more weight room space for recreational activity.

Anderson School of Management would receive a new building on the north side of the current buildings to provide more stateof-the-art teaching space that is up to par for a business school.

Smith Plaza is centrally located, and is in

dire need of updates to make it a more enjoyable place to be, as well as to make it more ADA-accessible and reach compliance.

Children’s Campus would like to expand in order to serve twice as many kids.

So, why is this important to you? Well, that’s where the institutional bonds aspect of this comes into play. To be able to fund these projects, UNM will sell bonds to companies that will pay upfront. Then, it is the University’s job to pay off the bonds over time.

Part of this money to pay off the bonds will come from student fees: YOUR fees. If these projects do get approved by the Board of Regents this upcoming Friday, student fees will increase over the course of the next few years. However, this is also important because these projects will increase the value of your degree. How, you ask? Well, seeing as better facilities and areas on campus will be able to draw more faculty and staff to the University, a better learning environment will be created.

More students will come to campus, the school will compare with some of the top institutions in the nation, and your degree will hold more value down the line. UNM’s success is YOUR success, and being a graduate of the University of New Mexico in 5, 10, or 50 years will only become more valuable as UNM makes much-needed improvements to its infrastructure.

Media are dead when politicians stop attacking

By Peter Funt Journalists pass a litmus test for fairness in covering politics when both political parties hate their work.

It’s refreshing, therefore, at this early stage of the 2016 presidential campaign, to hear Democrats criticizing so-called liberal media, and Republicans chastising conservative media.

Republican Donald Trump attacked Fox News for its questioning in the first GOP debate. He appeared to be in a state of stunned disbelief that reporters at Fox would dare toss anything but softballs his way. Fox reporters, he said, should be “ashamed.”

Across the aisle, listen to James Carville, chum of the Clintons and mouthpiece for the left, speaking the other day on MSNBC about Jeff Bezos, owner of The Washington Post: “He ought to go on 15th Street where the Post is and get the place in order. There’s nobody editing that newspaper, as far as I can see.”

Carville fumed because a Post analyst dared write that Democrats were in a “freakout”

over slippage in Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Are mainstream reporters treating Clinton fairly? According to Carville, “It’s mostly stupid media people talking to other stupid media people and making stuff up.”

That sounds frighteningly like the way conservatives sound off about media – all the way back to Vice President Spiro Agnew’s 1970 crack about “Nattering nabobs of negativism.” The rest of Agnew’s comment is all but lost to history, yet intriguing. He went on to say that media “have formed their own 4-H Club: the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history.”

Agnew’s remarks, penned by the eloquent conservative William Safire, helped launch a half-century of mistrust by some Republicans – the “silent majority” – of mainstream media in America.

In the current campaign, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s staff is becoming what Politico calls “the most press-averse group in the Republican field.” That Walker is afraid of scrutiny by left-leaning organizations is one thing, but the conservative Wall Street Journal?

Following a conference call with Walker, the Journal’s Stephanie Armour tweeted, “First time as a reporter I’ve ever had my questions pre-screened before I could ask them.”

In talking with diehards in both major parties, I hear an almost-nonstop refrain that media – all media – are out to get their candidate. They’re not referring to columnists and commentators who, by job description, are biased. They’re talking about reporters at established, mainstream outlets, from The New York Times and Wall Street Journal to CBS News and Fox News. As partisans see it, it’s pretty much all bias, all the time.

Many liberals are convinced, for example, that The Times has it in for the Clintons. They see prejudice in almost every news story, no matter how benign. Lately, they also believe The Times has a bias against Hillary Clinton’s closest rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The left-leaning Huffington Post sliced and diced a Times feature about Sanders, calling it “mildly and cheerfully disparaging.”

The piece carried the headline: “The Times Doctrine on Bernie Sanders,” but when it was

picked up word-for-word by Salon, the headline was changed to: “Bernie Sanders gets slimed by The New York Times.”

The Times report didn’t “slime” Sanders at all. Yet, media paranoia has reached a level where many see demons lurking in coverage that is even slightly critical of any candidate they favor.

Is there bias among news media? Probably, in certain quarters, to some degree. But at this point in the long slog to Election Day 2016, many in mainstream media deserve credit for treating all candidates with appropriate skepticism.

Here’s a fair and balanced news flash: The day candidates and partisans stop complaining about journalists is when we’ll know the coverage is skewed.

Letters Chartwells is addressing complaints about pay Editor,

Anti-toplessness is founded on questionable social mores Editor, Female toplessness, an Aug. 25 Daily Lobo letter says, will lead to more objectification. This thesis is fatally flawed: It ignores the social construction of gender and the implications of that. It is the tautological argument that women’s bodies need to be covered in order to garner respect (social norms say women’s bodies should be covered to be respected; women should cover their bodies for greater respect because thus sayeth social norms).

It is time – no, it is far past time – to deconstruct and interrogate the arbitrary social constructions that permit men to do something while women are not given the same privilege.

In response to the recent letter to the editor in the Daly Lobo, Chartwells would like readers to know that it is important to Chartwells that every associate is paid on time. We’ve identified issues with our delivery

service on campus that we are working diligently to resolve. At this time, all wages earned have been paid and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

The first flaw in the argument made in that letter is the glaring dichotomy set up between “woman” and “man.” The argument goes like this: men and women are different, because of – you know – anatomy and biochemistry and genes and things.

Thus, men are different from women.

Yet basing laws and regulations – and social standards – on these differences is a wholly arbitrary action. You cannot easily tell me what a “woman” is or what a “man” is. If you point to anatomical differences – a certain group of the population has penises and another group has vaginas, birth canals, and mammary glands – I will point to an individual with both mammary glands and a penis (is that a man, or a woman? The distinction is arbitrary).

If you point to biochemical and genetic differences, I will point to individuals with an XXY genotype (Klinefelter syndrome). On a

gross genetic level, a “man” is more similar to a “woman” than to an individual with the XXY genotype, even though that individual has a penis and no mammary glands.

Appealing to the “innate” biological differences between “man” and “woman” is arbitrary – and it does nothing to explain why individuals with XX genotypes should be (arbitrarily) singled out for certain legal dictates about the anatomical locations where fabric or covering is needed. It is genetic discrimination of a socially vcontrived nature. Your identity as a “woman” or as a “man” is a social construction – all the more so because such identities become increasingly blurred as Donna Haraway’s cyborgs manifest as a cultural, social and technological reality.

Further, the belief that women will become even more objectified if they were to

go bare-chested is not founded on any evidence – only off of a “hunch.” But men are allowed to be bare-chested, and society does not sexualize them nearly as much as women. If anything, the evidence points to the conclusion that, actually, if social norms permitted bare-chested women, objectification and hypersexualization of the female body would dissipate.

The idea that more female toplessness could incite more sexual assault – and therefore they should not go bare-chested – points to a very sickening aspect of society: it blames women for violence perpetrated against them. Instead of teaching your daughters to “cover up,” you should teach your sons not to rape.

Defense leads first shutout since 2008 Strong start to season leaves Head Coach Davie little to criticize Thomas Romero-Salas

New Mexico sophomore running back Daryl Chestnut didn’t need much time to show off his skills.

In the third quarter Chestnut took his first career handoff up the middle and used his speed to outrace the defense for a 64-yard touchdown.

That was just one of the many big plays UNM made in a 66-0 win over Mississippi Valley State at University Stadium on Saturday.

“We were better than they were, but again, I don’t take a shutout ever for granted. I don’t take 66 points for granted.”

Bob Davie head coach “I see explosiveness. I think we have the potential to be an explosive football team,” head coach Bob Davie said. “We have a lot of new players that bring something to the table as we anticipated they would.

I think we’re a pretty darn explosive football team, including our kicker.”

Davie didn’t have much to criticize about his team because the Lobos dominated in every single phase of the game. UNM (1-0) accrued 511 total yards of offense, compared to just 74 total yards of offense for MVSU.

The Lobos also tied a school and Mountain West record with eight rushing touchdowns.

UNM’s defense preyed on MVSU’s offensive line as the Lobos got six sacks. It was the first time the Lobos shut out an opponent since 2008.

The only time the Delta Devils threatened to score was when they drove to UNM’s 20yard line in the second quarter.

MVSU (0-1) blew its best scoring opportunity after it fumbled on a handoff exchange that was recovered by UNM. “It went about as well as it could go,” Davie said. “We had some penalties early, but other than that I think it went about as well as it could go.”

After going three-and-out on their opening possession, UNM scored on its next nine drives of the game.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Lamar Jordan gave the Lobos a 7-0 lead when he scampered 28 yards to pay dirt on an option read. Jordan had an effective day both running and throwing the ball: He went 7 of 7 passing for 103 yards and rushed for 62 yards on five carries with that lone touchdown.

“I feel like I could do better,” Jordan said. “I’m just a competitor and I’m hard on myself.”

Two Lobos earned their first and second career touchdowns in the game: redshirt freshman Tyrone Owens and junior college transfer sophomore Daryl Chestnut. Owens had touchdown runs of one and eight yards, while Chestnut, who had a team-high 108 rushing yards, scored from 64 and 37 yards out.

was credited with a score after he recovered a fumble by redshirt sophomore running back Romell Jordan in the endzone.

UNM finished with 380 rushing yards overall.

The only defensive touchdown for UNM came when MVSU quarterback Quantavius Peterson threw a pass with a defensive lineman clinging to him.

untouched for a 32-yard score.

“I think we’re pretty explosive; that’s what I take out of this game,” Davie said. “We were better than they were, but again, I don’t take a shutout ever for granted. I don’t take 66 points for granted.”

The only player that struggled for UNM was redshirt junior quarterback Austin Apodaca. He didn’t look comfortable against the Delta Devils and hit just 4 of 11 passes for 48 yards.

By Liam Cary-Eaves New Mexico’s defense showed no growing pains showcasing its new nickel defense in a 66-0 rout over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night at University Stadium.

UNM sent consistent pressure

throughout the night in the season opener against MVSU’s dual quarterback system, never allowing any kind of rhythm for the Delta Devils.

Head coach Bob Davie said he doesn’t take anything for granted after his team blew out the visiting Delta Devils, but said it was hard to tell how well his defense

actually performed.

“Mississippi Valley State really struggled,” Davie said of MVSU’s offense. “I don’t know that they knew what they really wanted to do.”

Davie said he was able to throw a lot of different looks at an inferior MVSU squad. Thirtyone different players saw playing time on the defensive side of the

ball for the Lobos.

All of Davie’s different looks produced UNM’s first shutout since its homecoming game on October 4, 2008 against Wyoming. The Lobos won that game 24-0 under head coach Rocky Long.

“We really just wanted to go out there and make a statement,”

redshirt sophomore linebacker Kimmie Carson said. “I think holding them to zero points made a statement, no matter the team.

We did what we wanted to do.”

MVSU (0-1) ran 56 plays, accumulating 74 yards on 13 drives in its season opener.

Student-entrepreneur wins trip to Tel Aviv Exchange takes UNM business co-founder to conference in Israel

By Skylar Griego Sept. 6 marks the inaugural trip for one lucky entrepreneur on an expense-paid journey to Israel thanks to the New Mexico-Israel Business Exchange.

The winner of this trip of the future-annual NMIBE International Fellowship Program will be sent to Tel Aviv University StarTau Entrepreneurship Center to participate in a course that includes Israel’s annual DLD Tel Aviv Digital Innovation Conference, engage with other business entrepreneurs and receive competitive training in international business.

The course will start Sept. 6 and end on Sept. 10.

Tell me about yourself.

“I am a micro solar cell expert passionate about the environment and clean technology.

I spent the last seven years in Sandia National Laboratories developing a gamechanging solar technology with a large group of worldclass researchers.

The great mentoring and opportunities given at Sandia enabled me to publish more than 30 publications, be (the) author or co-author of more than 20 patents and present my research nationally and internationally through local TV,

magazines and the Internet.”

I understand this fellowship is for entrepreneurs.

So, what do you do?

“I am the co-founder and vice president of product development at mPower Technology Inc. We are in the process of commercializing a unique solar technology from Sandia National Laboratories that was developed over the last nine years with investments summing $19 million.”

How did you hear about the NMIBE program?

“I heard about it through the listserv from entrepreneurs that ABQid runs.”

What made you want to get involved?

for all the creative and hightech startups. I was very curious about learning about their entrepreneurial ecosystem. I also enjoy traveling and understanding other cultures.”

How did you feel when you found out you were going to Israel?

“I didn’t believe (it) for a second, and then I got super excited.”

Why are you interested in going to Israel? What do you hope to accomplish there?

“I want to learn about their entrepreneurial ecosystem. I hope to meet with companies that incorporate our products into their applications.”

Only one of MVSU’s 13 drives was threatening as the Delta Devils marched down the field and into the red zone. The tenplay, 55-yard drive was nullified after a poor exchange between quarterback Dontrinell Scott and wide receiver Booker Chambers.

The fumble at the 20 yard line was the only time MVSU managed to make an appearance inside the red zone despite having a longer time of possession than the Lobos.

UNM’s addition of an extra defensive back had no effect on the Lobos’ ability to reach the backfield.

New Mexico (1-0) made 13 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 71 yards on the game. The Lobo defense had its sights on Scott throughout the contest as five different players brought down the quarterback, tallying six total sacks on the day.

CAMPUS BRIEFS UNM West to open new HSC The UNM Board of Regents recently approved a news health sciences education building at the University’s branch in Rio Rancho, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

The branch currently services about 1,500 students, according to the article, but UNM West CEO Wynn Goering said that some potential students have had to be turned away due to space constraints, which the new facility would address.

“UNM’s nursing program downtown takes about one out of five qualified applicants because they don’t have room, literally, to do any more,” Goering told the Journal.

The University will have to come up with the financials to pay for the project, which would cost about $20 million. Half of that amount would come from capital outlay requests, with the other $10 million coming from taxes, according to the article.

UNM is recognized by various national outlets as among the best when it comes to medical programs. It is ranked 35th

by US News in terms of primary care, and 83rd when it comes to research – 10th in family medicine and 3rd in rural medicine.

Richard Draper, program

manager for the Sandoval Country Health Collaborative, said in the article that the building is one step toward a larger initiative to create opportunities for those interested in the medical field.

“We’re well-positioned to help tell that story of what’s available, what are the openings, what kind of training do you need, what kind of certification you need, so that local students have a clear path to careers in this area,” Draper said in the article.

Blue recycling bins to get a facelift As part of an ongoing initiative to become more environmentally friendly, UNM is improving the visibility and overall appearance of its blue recycling bins around main campus, according to a University press release.

The bins are getting a fresh coat of the trademark blue shade of paint that is associated with the general recycling enterprise, along with the “new UNM Recycling bright green footprint logo,” the release stated.

Mary Clark, sustainability manager at UNM, said that the improvement in the bins’ look could make the difference between whether a student recycles something or throws it in the trash.

“A person’s decision to recycle is usually made in a few seconds, and the hope is that these updated bins will encourage people to reduce their waste, reuse and recycle,” she said. “This is how, as a campus, we can demonstrate how to Love Red and Live Green.”

According to UNM’s Office of Sustainability webpage, students and everyone else on campus can discard paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles in the bins. The recycling division of the Office of Sustainability also recycles old cardboard, media discs, metal and wood.

UNM also recently announced the move to install ten VendingMiser machines around campus. These are essentially vending machines that save energy when not in use.

Contest to bring SNL personality to UNM opens UNM students can vote for Kenan Thompson, a veteran member of Saturday Night Live, to appear at UNM as part of a national competition held in a collaboration between NBCUniversal and Comcast.

The contest is available to colleges nationwide, and students can vote by visiting xfinityprofessors.com, according to an email

sent to the Daily Lobo.

According to the email, students can vote and increase their chances of winning by “participating in a series of tasks such as taking an online quiz or watching a video.

For every task completed, students will win additional entries to attend the lecture. The school with the most votes will win a performance by Kenan in their college town.”

Students provide their vote on the website by entering with their UNM email addresses.

Voting is open until Sept. 28, with the winning college being announced the same day.

According to the release, Thompson is about to begin his 13th season on SNL, and has “a catalog of hilarious impressions that include Rev. Al Sharpton, Steve Harvey and Charles Barkley…he’s also starred in hit movies including Fat Albert, Good Burger and Heavyweights.”

New app looks to improve campus safety A new mobile app to stay safe on campus, called BlueLight, is available to students, according to a press release emailed to the Daily Lobo, . “[It] lets students share locations

in real time and pings contacts when they get to their destination,” the release stated. “The app also routes emergency calls based on location and alerts emergency contacts via text.”

A survey conducted by BlueLight shows that mobile access is playing a bigger role in students feeling safe on university campuses nationwide.

According to the survey, 61 percent of females contact family or friends while walking home alone on college campuses, with 66 percent of those letting them know when they’ve arrived at their destination.

The survey states that such mobile communication is rendering blue emergency phone poles outdated, as BlueLight represents “a growing network that currently comprises over 250 campuses nationwide, including many of the country’s largest and most prestigious universities.”

According to a January article in USA Today, “BlueLight places safety into the hands of students.

It works intuitively with campuses to ensure that students feel secure in any location.”
