Does UNMPD do enough to prevent sexual harassment?

Department under scrutiny from parents, students who think they could do more

By David Lynch In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of reported sexual harassment incidents on campus, which has some asking whether UNM police are doing enough to protect students.

“I think they need to have more patrols,” said Mary Martinez, a junior biology major. “You hardly ever see them, and it’s very unfortunate that these incidents have to happen for them to notice. They’re usually not here in the evenings, which really sucks. It’s kind of scary walking around campus and you don’t see any of them.”

There have been three sexual harassment incidents on or near main campus warranting a LoboAlert since July 30, including one on Friday morning.

UNMPD Public Information Officer Lt. Tim Stump said the police force constantly does all it can to prevent harassment of any kind at the University, with a comprehensive process that begins right when the first call is made.

“Any call we respond to is handled based on the information we receive at the time,” Stump said.

He said the first priority is always getting medical assistance to survivors.

Additionally, an advocate from the Rape Crisis Center is assigned to help in the short- and long-term.

The investigation of individual incidents is handled by a Sexual Misconduct/Assault Response Team (SMART) detective, who also assists the victim in any way they can.

He said the best thing people can do to prevent sexual harassment is keep their eyes open, and to realize that time is of the essence.

“Students have to be aware and cautious of their surroundings,” Stump said.

“If you’re a victim or a witness, get the best description you possibly can and call UNMPD immediately. If an alert goes out, pay attention to it. If you locate someone matching their description, call us immediately.”

Lilly Diamond, a UNM alum with a daughter currently enrolled, said the high frequency of reported sexual harassment incidents in recent weeks have her concerned, and have prompted her to communicate with UNMPD Chief of Police Kevin McCabe.

By David Lynch The Associated Students of UNM, the University’s undergraduate governing body, held its first full senate meeting of the semester with 2015-2016 Vice President Alex Cervantes presiding. Here are the big things you need to know.

Fresh faces The meeting began with the swearing in of two new senators, replacements for two who were voted in but couldn’t resume ASUNM duties due to scheduling conflicts, said Vice President Alex Cervantes.

They are Jordan Allen, a junior business major, and Arely Guerrero, a sophomore criminology major.

Coming Soon Lisa Marbury of Institutional Support Services laid out the priorities for UNM future projects and building renovations. In order of priority, they are: the physics and astronomy building, Anderson School of Management, Smith Plaza/ Union Square, Johnson Center, and the Children’s Campus/ Child Care.

“These are student priorities, that’s how we present them to the state,” Marbury said.

There are renovations and expansion planned for four of the facilities, while there will be an entirely new physics and astronomy building on a site across form Yale Mall from Castetter Hall.

“I am 99 percent confident that we will get this site,” Marbury said.

There will be an forum open to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and Thursday, Sept. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the SUB Atrium, where students are invited to come give their opinions about the projects.

IT Innovations Moira Gerety of University IT services also gave a presentation at the meeting over technology updates and planned refurbishing from that department.

UNM is evaluating options that would allow faculty members to text their students whenever class is cancelled. myUNM is being “re-envisioned” to have a new look, including a polished interface, search improvements and, for the first time, personalization capabilities.

Gerety explained that IT’s initiatives are made first and foremost with the students in mind.

“We want to invest primarily in the common good.

When we invest in something, we want to invest in something that serves a lot of students,” she said.

Help Wanted Sen. Brad Sedillo said that the Elections Commission is still in need of staff.

Nine commissioners total are needed, yet only two have applied, Sedillo said. As a result, the deadline has been pushed back for a third time to Sept. 4.

According to a post on the Elections Commission’s facebook page, “commissioners are required to run all undergraduate student elections and ensure that the election process is fair and organized.” Stipends are given to commissioners at the end of each semester.

“I’ve been on the LoboAlerts since they’ve started it, and I’ve never seen this many in such a short period of time,” she said.

“I’m very surprised that there hasn’t been more of a face of the UNMPD on campus since things have started.”

Diamond said when it comes to the UNMPD’s list of concerns, it is clear to her what should be at the top.

“It should be their top priority to have a huge presence on campus,” she said. “It should be their number-one priority. All students are walking on campus, and having the police cars drive around Redondo can only do a small amount.”

Stump said UNMPD does have a uniform presence on campus, made up of 40 officers. The time at which the highest number of officers are deployed is from early morning until later afternoon on Monday through Friday.

“Officers regularly conduct foot patrol and bike patrol,” he said. “Proactively, we utilize the media to inform the public. Foot patrols are more directed to areas of occurrence to hopefully divert a repeat incident.”

But that number doesn’t satisfy some students, including Martinez.

“They should probably do some sort of involvement with APD, and have some sort of con-

tract with them, because that is not enough,” she said.

There may be an explanation for the increase in reported incidents, and it suggests that they actually aren’t occurring at a higher frequency as of late.

“The number of reports of gropings on and near campus has increased, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the number of gropings has increased,” said Dianne Anderson, director of University communication.

“What we may be seeing is that women are now more likely to report these types of incidents because they recognize that the University is doing something about them.”

Anderson cited the LoboRESPECT initiative and its soon-to-open advocacy center, revised New Student Orientation presentations on sexual assault and LoboAlerts with suspect descriptions, among other things, as proactive steps that the University is taking to educate students about what to do when they may be witnessing sexual harassment.

“We expect the number of reports of cases to go up as that information resonates with students,” she said.

With regard to the recent string of incidents, Stump said there is no discernible pattern or connection. However, he said

that UNMPD’s odds of catching suspects increase greatly when they do get the exposure on social media, such as the sharing of information from LoboAlerts.

“Officers caught the last individual due to foot patrols, and the alerts that were put out helped identify the suspect,” he said. “This was a great example of how the community worked together to apprehend a suspect.”

UNMPD takes steps to catch stair-do-well vandals

By David Lynch At some time between the evening hours on Monday and 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a portion of the cement steps on the north side of the SUB were vandalized, with a small area of the steps being destroyed and rubble strewn nearby.

Willie West, manager of grounds and landscaping at the Physical Plant Department, said the damage, which includes a portion of an area that measures about 10 feet by 15 feet, was apparently caused by “someone driving a vehicle up the steps.”

West said UNM staff cordoned the area off early Tuesday “so that no students or visitors would be injured.” Further, a contractor arrived during the day to repair the damaged steps. By Wednesday, the steps were functional and the damage repaired.

One of the ongoing initiatives of the Physical Plant Department,

which maintains campus foundations and structures, is to protect the interior of main campus and the students utilizing it, West said.

To that end, UNM has bollards — short, vertical posts intended to reduce outside vehicle traffic — placed around the campus perimeter. But on Monday night those weren’t enough.

“Obviously, somebody got around them and caused this issue last night,” West said.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, UNM police have not had any leads, according to UNMPD Public Information Officer Lt. Tim Stump.

Journalists’ slayings hit real close to home Most of us have had that moment when something bad has happened and we thought, ‘That could have been me.’

‘I almost went to that theater last night.’

‘I was in that store 30 minutes earlier.’

‘It could have been me; it could have been my family.’

For journalists, we have had at least 70 opportunities to that think this year.

The Wednesday morning shootings of Virginia journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward were the first this year in the United States; these two also have the distinction of being the only ones on the list who died while on the job, but not for doing their job.

The other 68 dead journalists died because of what they were investigating or whom they criticized, because murdering reporters has become a worldwide trend.

It’s a hard thing to realize: that our colleagues are being murdered while doing their jobs; that one day, it could be us.

Journalism tends to get a bad reputation. On television we’re portrayed as sleazy liars, backstabbing people to get the story. In real life we’re portrayed as Rupert Murdoch-types — stealing information for sensational headlines.

Are those things true of some of us? Sure, every profession has the jerks and the sneaks, the people who chose the career for the wrong reasons and give the rest of us a bad name.

Do we sometimes just get it wrong? Oh, yes. Both CNN and Fox News initially misreported the Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling on the Affordable Care Act, and any journalist at the Daily Lobo can give the headline and publication date of their biggest mistakes. As much as we try, we just plain screw it up now and then.

But for most of us, the job is about getting information out to the public. Whether it’s WatergateScandal-big or local-recreation-site-small, we’re just trying to inform the public.

We deliver that information because we believe in transparency. We believe that informed citizens are vital to a democracy. In fact, it’s such a strongly held belief that journalism is the only profession specifically mentioned as protected in the Bill of Rights.

And yet, journalists in Egypt are in hiding. The “Charlie Hebdo” building in France has tightened security. Managers at WDBJ in Virginia are considering a move toward secrecy when it comes to reporting locations. How can we do our jobs, how can we perform this public service, when we are always considered a public menace at best and a threat to national security at worst?

Do we stop talking about corrupt governments and cops who abuse their power? Do we stop covering live music and interesting research? Should we hide behind secure doors that will not open to the public and stop identifying ourselves when out in the field?

No. We shouldn’t. We should continue to do our jobs. We should continue to fight for transparency and information. And we should continue to remember: ‘It could have been me.’

LETTERS Toplessness will lead to more female objectification Editor, While I respect the goal to obtain equal rights among men and women, I was disappointed after I read (Monday’s) story, “Activists Go Without for Topless Equality.”

While their intentions may be to de-sexualize the female body, the results are furthering our objectification as women.

There is a difference between women being the same as a men and being treated as equals. Men and women are different: our

anatomy, our hormones and our general urges set us apart. That does not make one inferior or superior to the other. It makes us different — in beautiful ways. We need to embrace our diversity, while still valuing the life of the other and giving equality to each other.

Women, how are we valuing our bodies by making them out to be less than what they are? That is what this protest showed to me: that women are saying our bodies are as ordinary as men’s bodies. But if we look at the miracles and wonders of the human body, we would recognize that neither the female nor male anatomy is ordinary. They are altogether an amazing creation, intended to be honored, respected and treasured

— not to be treated as mere objects for the world to look at as mundane.

How would women in Albuquerque going topless like men better our society? I don’t see any benefits — only outcomes that result in more objectification of women, less respect for the female body and children being exposed too early to nudity. I see teenagers with developing sexual drives having more unprotected sex if their peers are topless, which could lead to more STDs and unplanned pregnancies.

It may seem like a reach to you, but the correlation seems possible to me. I see men targeting topless women as objects and sexually assaulting them — even though being

topless is not an invitation to be assaulted.

But do they know that? Are we willing to put ourselves at risk just to prove a point?

What would come next: males having the right to be bottomless? I don’t see a more progressive society from this, but a more perverted one. Why? Because women’s bodies will never be valued and respected as they should be, especially topless. I think we deserve better as women.

We are not men. We are women — and we are beautiful.

The UNM Health Sciences Center is providing a cooking class to help participants recover from mental illnesses and substance abuse.

The class is offered at the UNM Psychiatric Center and is a part of the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program.

“PSR practice is guided by the basic philosophy of rehabilitation, which holds that people with disabilities need opportunities to identify and choose for themselves their desired roles in the community with regard to living, learning, working and/or participating in social environments,” according to a UNM HSC press release.

PSR is focused on recovery, selfdetermination, daily living skills and individuals being able to function as independently as possible, said Helen Tafoya, clinical manager at the UNM Psychiatric Center’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program.

“Cooking skills are fundamental to self-care and learning to maintain a budget,” she said.

Skills classes offer support in acquiring basic skills crucial to mental health recovery and personal empowerment, according to the statement. Hands-on classes offered include cooking, ceramics, fabric arts, gardening, photography, basic computer skills, mindful living, creative writing and daily fitness classes.

PSR is funded by Medicaid and the New Mexico Behavioral Health Services Division on a fee-for-service basis, Tafoya said.

“PSR as a whole is based in addressing individualized recovery goals,” she said. “Cooking classes address cooking skill sets and assist individuals in learning how to take care of oneself from a nutritional perspective.”

Participants in the class are expected to take an active role in learning and practicing the skill sets taught, such as basic kitchen safety, meal planning, grocery shopping, how to follow a recipe, how to prepare a meal from ingredients already available and how to maintain proper kitchen cleanliness, Tafoya said.

“Also, those key social skills can

be practiced when consumers must work with each other to prepare a meal or complete another cooking/ kitchen project,” she said.

Each cooking class can accommodate approximately 10 consumers at a time, she said.

The program frequently offers more than one cooking class each cycle, which is 13 weeks for the program.

“Many consumers opt to take several cooking classes over the course of their involvement with PSR,” Tafoya said.

The class also provides an opportunity for participants to take what they’ve learned and apply it to their own lifestyles.

“One consumer who lives with his parents has told me he now cooks at least one meal every weekend for his family. He takes a great deal of pride in that,” she said. “Many consumers who live alone are able to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. And for those on a limited budget, which is almost all the individuals we serve, they are better able to make their food dollars stretch and are able to make better food choices.”

Peter Kennedy, supervisor of community-based services at the PSR, said that the cooking classes improve self-efficacy of the participants and they start trusting their abilities and skills.

“It gives individuals basic skills to live independently,” Kennedy said. “It also provides an opportunity to work as a group. It gives them confidence when they are able to cook a meal for themselves. It is an achievement that many of them may or may not have had prior to this cooking class.”

Tafoya said she saw many consumers with increased self-esteem and pride when they show off the finished product.

“As a group they are more likely to try a new recipe or cooking technique together than any single person would try alone,” she said. “There is also something very healing about cooking a meal in community and then sharing it with others.”

campus briefs New C&J chair Selected As of the beginning of the fall semester, Janet Shiver is the new chair of the communications and journalism department at UNM, following the retirement of former chair Karen Foss earlier in the month.

According to the department’s website, Shiver has been a fulltime faculty member at UNM since 2007. However, she has been involved at UNM in a variety of facets, including student, teaching assistant and part-time instructor.

In addition to teaching, Shiver also states on her web page that her interests involve researching different methods of learning for students.

“Employers say they want college-educated employees who know how to effectively work in teams,” she said. “I am very interested in exploring the impact of teambased learning on students’ abilities to engage in active learning.”

Shiver has also published several training manuals centered around teaching and teamwork.

Her favorite classes include business and professional speaking, small group communication and public speaking, according to the web page.

She states on the web page that she is honored to be a part of the communications and journalism department.

“I have had the pleasure of working with an outstanding faculty of exceptional scholars and a department with an outstanding reputation,” she states.

The Daily Lobo was unable to speak to Shiver before publication.

University College offers new supports UNM’s University College has created several programs to prepare students for gathering in-depth knowledge and feel empowered by learning.

Academic Foundations courses are designed to help students needing additional support in reading and math, and are intended to deliver not only content, but also to help students develop selfdirected learning, according to a UNM press release.

The fall offerings include 10 sections of Critical Text Analysis, serving 250 students; 25 sections of Quantitative Reasoning, serving 600 students; and five sections of Math Learning Strategies I, serving 125

students, according to the statement.

“This is a very exciting time in University College, as we work on offering innovative ways to expose students to these skills their first semester in college. With these experiences and skills, they will be inspired to create a better tomorrow for themselves, our University and society.” said Sonia Gipson-Rankin, associate dean, curriculum and program development.

“In the past, students were placed in what had been Introductory Studies-Math (IS-M) because of ACT scores,” she said, “but ACT scores are not always indicative of a student’s ability to do more advanced work.”

Community service award nominations open The UNM’s Office of the President is accepting nominations for the Sarah Belle Brown Community Service Award.

The nominations will be accepted through Monday, Sept.28.

“The award, which recognizes the volunteer service work done by members of the UNM community, was established and endowed by former Regent and

Anderson School of Management Dean Doug Brown to honor his wife, Sarah Belle Brown, and her lifelong commitment to public service,” according to a UNM press release.

Each year one faculty member, one staff member, and one student is recognized by the Award for their services to the community and donation of time to the UNM’s public service mission, according to the statement.

The winners receive a cash award of $1,500 with the student recipient receiving a scholarship of the same amount, the statement said.

“For 30 years Sarah Belle Brown has devoted considerable time to the community. Her lifelong interest in helping children and her command of Spanish led her to specialize in teaching English to Spanishspeaking children in Los Angeles,” she said.

“Later in San Francisco, she established a program in that school district focused on assisting newly immigrated Asian children to adapt to a new culture, and that was just the beginning. Mrs. Brown’s work in child advocacy and community service has continued into the present day.”

Researchers to improve emergency care for children The UNM Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and the UNM Emergency Medical Service Consortium joined the universities of Arizona and Oklahoma in the newly formed Southwest Research Node Center to conduct research studies to improve emergency medical care for ill and injured children.

The research node is one of six within the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network, or PECARN, according to the press release.

“New Mexico’s children can benefit greatly from our front-line participation in PECARN studies,” said Dr. Robert Sapien, chief of pediatric emergency medicine at UNM. “We’re excited to be a part of a research effort that can improve the lives of one of our most vulnerable populations – our youth.”

The alliance will use $2.4 million federal funding to develop and conduct PECARN-approved studies that focus on preventing and reducing youth morbidity and mortality, according to the statement. ~ Compiled by Sayyed Shah

Fundraising picnic also features waterslides

All proceeds from the Princess & Pirate Waterslide Picnic will go to the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network.

Dean Strober, the owner of Blue River Productions, said the RGDSN cause is dear to him and his wife, Lena, because his 2-year-old daughter, Aleeya, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

“That organization has proven incredibly helpful in terms of helping build and maintain a community of people whose

lives are impacted by Down Syndrome,” Strober said. “That’s where the idea came from and why we decided to do it.”

On top of the fundraiser, Strober said Blue River Productions also wanted to create something big that was appropriate and fun for kids of all ages.

“Our approach is ‘if you’re going to do it, go big’ — that ‘go big or go home’ philosophy,” he said.

Strober’s 5-year-old daughter, Zoelle, came up with the idea of a

princess and pirate festival, he said.

“She said, ‘how about a princess and pirate festival’ … So we just kind of trusted our 5-year-old (and) that she would know what other kids would want,” Strober said.

Other activities offered at the festival include interactive soccer and football fields provided by i9 Sports, a large play area for toddlers provided by Gymboree and princess and pirate themed crafts with the help of the Girl Scouts. There will also be a wide variety of vendors for shopping.

The tentative goal of the event is to raise $10,000 for the RGDSN and spread the word about what they do, he said. If this year’s event is successful, Strober said he hopes to make it an annual fundraising event to benefit the network as well as provide a fun event for families in Albuquerque.

Growling and gritty vocals make for misunderstood lyrics

Though the phrase may sound like an oxymoron, it is actually a genre that is growing in popularity among fans of heavy metal.

Melodic metal is a form of metal in which the drums, vocals and bass are as heavy and aggressive as possible, as is the case with most heavy metal, but the guitarist’s role takes on a more melodic aspect as the solos become more symphonic and well-tuned.

“No Epitaphs,” the upcoming release from heavy metal punk band Ramming Speed, is an interesting blend of traditional heavy metal and epic guitar riffs that actually consist of more than fast-paced power chords.

The first track, “No Forgiveness in Death,” gives off an impression of energetic epicness. The fun riffs mixed with the perfect headbanging beat will make fans want to get up and move with the music.

For most metal fans, this feeling will likely last when the gritty vocals of the screamer, I mean, singer, come in. Metal heads are no strangers to indiscernible growling, and most find it fun to mosh to.

Metal heads who are slightly pickier, like this critic, may be disappointed by the vocals and find their energy levels lowered by this disappointment. While the growling is not particularly terrible or unpleasant to listen to, there is also nothing that makes it stand out. Peter Gallagher’s growling sounds like that of any other pissed off man screaming into the microphone. The lack of melodies to match those of the guitar is rather dissatisfying.

What makes it so unimpressive for more musical listeners is not the screaming itself, but the lack of pitch control and diction on Gallagher’s part. If Ramming Speed wants to take the next step in making impressive music,

Gallagher may want to take a page out of Arch Enemy’s book. Alissa White-Gluz, Arch Enemy vocalist, might scream and growl a lot, but you can understand most of what she’s saying when she does so.

Listeners looking for words of inspiration will definitely want to skip this album, as there is absolutely no way to discern whether Gallagher is even speaking English, much less what it is he’s actually saying. Only the most dedicated metal head, with the help of lyric books, will be able to sing along to the distorted words in “No Epitaphs”.

Despite this disappointment, “No Epitaphs” is actually a fun, upbeat album. The music is a catchy blend of old metalinspired solos mixed with the epic guitar intros commonly found in symphonic metal. No one will be able to fall asleep after experiencing the pounding drums in “Horns of War,” and the epic guitar solos in “Break in the Chain” make powering through the vocalist’s gibberish worthwhile.

Guitarists and bassists who enjoy playing metal may find Kallen Bliss, Snake Chuffskin’s and Ben Powell’s playing perfect to inspire the next speed metal solo. Drummers will definitely love the heart-pounding beats of Jonah Livingston. Despite the lack of flair in the vocals, Ramming Speed’s new album stands out from the cookiecutter thrash metal bands that tour these days.

For those who like head-banging, mosh-worthy nonsense rounded out with solos perfect for throwing your horns in the air, “No Epitaphs” may be the next album for you.

Coach shooting for 400th career win with opener Nelson looking to reach milestone at his homecoming tournament

By Liam Cary-Eaves This is no ordinary seasonopening tournament for head coach Jeff Nelson and his New Mexico volleyball squad.

UNM will compete in three games in Muncie, Indiana during the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge. Not only will Nelson face off against some of his former coaching staff, but UNM may be able to award its head coach with his 400th career win - and on a national stage, no less.

The tournament will also be a homecoming for Nelson, as Ball State is his alma mater.

Although Nelson is shooting for a milestone this weekend, he hasn’t hinted anything to his team involving No. 400. Junior outside hitter Cassie House said she had no idea her head coach was going to be playing for a career mark.

“I think it would be a really cool bonus to get a victory against Ball State, his alma mater,” House said.

“But I don’t think there’s any added pressure because I didn’t even know it would be 400.”

Nelson has been a head coach for 21 seasons for three different schools, amassing a 397-234 record.

He is in his ninth year at the helm for New Mexico and has accumulated a 155-87 record as a Lobo.

Ball State, it won’t be the first milestone he achieved against his former school. As head coach of Texas Tech, Nelson garnered his 100th win against Ball State in the Nanook Classic in Fairbanks, Alabama on September 12, 1999.

However, the Lobos will have to

keep a perfect record to celebrate Nelson’s career win. As if there wasn’t already pressure to start the season off on the right foot, UNM will have to take home wins against Belmont and Albany on Friday before playing Ball State on ESPN3 at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

“Any time you can get some exposure it’s good for your program and good for recruiting,” Nelson said.

“Hopefully it will be a great match.”

Nelson said his veteran players are going to be leading the way to start the season off, but added that his incoming

freshmen and transfer players are going to have the ability to earn a spot in some rotations.

“We’re looking to just build the connections and get really comfortable with our lineup,” House said. “Whatever the lineup may be, just making sure it’s sturdy and start a good foundation for the rest of the season.”

New Mexico will likely be beginning the season with a heavy dose of returning players, Nelson said, but the starting libero spot may be handed to incoming freshman Mercedes Pacheco, a recent St. Pius graduate.

Nelson said his excitement to return to Ball State stems from seeing good friends, returning to a beautiful campus and playing against some of his former coaches. However, Nelson said he anticipates a quality atmosphere inside Worthen Arena.

“Volleyball is really a highvisibility sport out there,” Nelson said. “They get good crowds and do a lot of good things with both the men and the women’s programs.”

The opening serve for New Mexico’s 2015 season is scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday against Belmont.

Season opens with top-ranked UCLA Bruins

The New Mexico men’s soccer team will travel to California this weekend to open up its regular season against one of the toughest competitors in the country: UCLA. The Bruins are ranked No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll.

Last year the Bruins advanced to their program’s ninth College Cup final. This season they kept a lot of their talent, as seven of their top 10 scorers will be returning.

UCLA is just one of six teams that UNM will play that made it to the NCAA tournament last year. This doesn’t make for an easy schedule, but the Lobos are enthusiastic.

“I’m really excited about our schedule,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said earlier this month. “We get to test ourselves early against some top teams, both on the road and at home.”

The Bruins already played two exhibition matches. Their first was against the Mexican U-17 national team, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The second was against the San Francisco Dons, against whom the Bruins came out on top with a 2-1 victory.

UCLA is looking strong again this year, but despite the Bruins’ achievements, the Lobos have shown they have no problem keeping up.

The Lobos hosted UCLA last year and fell 2-1. However, UNM dominated the game with an 18-3 edge in shots and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks. That game was an example of what Fishbein said happened last season: “the whole was not greater than the sum of its parts.”

Two years ago the Lobos won the Conference USA regular season title and made it all the way to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament.

Last year was supposed to be an opportunity for the Lobos to build on that success, but things did not go as planned. Although the Lobos held a 11-6-1 overall record, their efforts were not enough to earn them a ticket to the NCAA tournament. It was the first time the Lobos

missed the tournament since 2008.

It was a bit discouraging, but Fishbein said he believes his team has what it takes to be successful this year.

Like UCLA, the Lobos also finished their preseason undefeated, with two wins against Air Force and Grand Canyon, and a draw with Denver.

During these exhibitions Fishbein said he was happy with the cohesiveness of the group and he felt confident that things will sharpen up as the season progresses.

Assistant coach Mike Graczyk agreed with Fishbein and said he think the Lobos have a chance of defeating any opponent as long as they keep working together.

“What I love the most about this group is that it is a team-first group,” he said. “They score together and they keep the ball out of the net together.”

Deep D-line hardens in face of coming season

By Thomas Romero-Salas It takes time to instill a physical mentality. It’s something New Mexico’s defensive coordinator has been working on.

Kevin Cosgrove, who is in his second year at his position, said one of his goals was to get the Lobos to play a more physical style of football.

So far, the team has shown a more aggressive attitude with Cosgrove at the helm.

“I think we have been more aggressive; I don’t think there’s any question in that. That’s a big part of playing defense, but it’s also about taking care of your assignment and doing your job,” Cosgrove said. “We’ve been tackling a lot this camp - more than we ever have since we’ve been here. It has to pay dividends, because we were giving up too many big plays in tackling last year.”

The key question mark that surrounds the defense is tackling. In the course of head coach Bob Davie’s first three years, the Lobos missed numerous tackles that led to big plays for opposing offenses.

There’s not much time left to make adjustments for the Lobos, who are fewer than 10 days from their season-opener against Mississippi Valley State.

Cosgrove said he wants the defense to be sharper in preparation for the opener.

“I like our progress. The attitude has been outstanding,” he said. “We still have some things that we have to get better at. We have to continue to be excellent in our assignment, and I need to have more exactness in that.”

“To say it’s a work in progress is an understatement,” Davie said.

“It’s a big challenge, but it’s also a big opportunity.”

Senior guard Eden Mahina would start at center if the season began today, Davie said. Junior guard Tevita Fonua, a junior college transfer, has been taking snaps at center.

By David Lynch The Associated Students of UNM, the University’s undergraduate governing body, held its first full senate meeting of the semester with 2015-2016 Vice President Alex Cervantes presiding. Here are the big things you need to know.

Fresh faces The meeting began with the swearing in of two new senators, replacements for two who were voted in but couldn’t resume ASUNM duties due to scheduling conflicts, said Vice President Alex Cervantes.

They are Jordan Allen, a junior business major, and Arely Guerrero, a sophomore criminology major.

Coming Soon Lisa Marbury of Institutional Support Services laid out the priorities for UNM future projects and building renovations. In order of priority, they are: the physics and astronomy building, Anderson School of Management, Smith Plaza/ Union Square, Johnson Center, and the Children’s Campus/ Child Care.

“These are student priorities, that’s how we present them to the state,” Marbury said.

There are renovations and expansion planned for four of the facilities, while there will be an entirely new physics and astronomy building on a site across form Yale Mall from Castetter Hall.

“I am 99 percent confident that we will get this site,” Marbury said.

There will be an forum open to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and Thursday, Sept. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the SUB Atrium, where students are invited to come give their opinions about the projects.

IT Innovations Moira Gerety of University IT services also gave a presentation at the meeting over technology updates and planned refurbishing from that department.

UNM is evaluating options that would allow faculty members to text their students whenever class is cancelled. myUNM is being “re-envisioned” to have a new look, including a polished interface, search improvements and, for the first time, personalization capabilities.

Gerety explained that IT’s initiatives are made first and foremost with the students in mind.

“We want to invest primarily in the common good.

When we invest in something, we want to invest in something that serves a lot of students,” she said.

Help Wanted Sen. Brad Sedillo said that the Elections Commission is still in need of staff.

Nine commissioners total are needed, yet only two have applied, Sedillo said. As a result, the deadline has been pushed back for a third time to Sept. 4.

According to a post on the Elections Commission’s facebook page, “commissioners are required to run all undergraduate student elections and ensure that the election process is fair and organized.” Stipends are given to commissioners at the end of each semester.

“I’ve been on the LoboAlerts since they’ve started it, and I’ve never seen this many in such a short period of time,” she said.

“I’m very surprised that there hasn’t been more of a face of the UNMPD on campus since things have started.”

Diamond said when it comes to the UNMPD’s list of concerns, it is clear to her what should be at the top.

“It should be their top priority to have a huge presence on campus,” she said. “It should be their number-one priority. All students are walking on campus, and having the police cars drive around Redondo can only do a small amount.”

Stump said UNMPD does have a uniform presence on campus, made up of 40 officers. The time at which the highest number of officers are deployed is from early morning until later afternoon on Monday through Friday.

“Officers regularly conduct foot patrol and bike patrol,” he said. “Proactively, we utilize the media to inform the public. Foot patrols are more directed to areas of occurrence to hopefully divert a repeat incident.”

But that number doesn’t satisfy some students, including Martinez.

“They should probably do some sort of involvement with APD, and have some sort of con-

tract with them, because that is not enough,” she said.

There may be an explanation for the increase in reported incidents, and it suggests that they actually aren’t occurring at a higher frequency as of late.

“The number of reports of gropings on and near campus has increased, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the number of gropings has increased,” said Dianne Anderson, director of University communication.

“What we may be seeing is that women are now more likely to report these types of incidents because they recognize that the University is doing something about them.”

Anderson cited the LoboRESPECT initiative and its soon-to-open advocacy center, revised New Student Orientation presentations on sexual assault and LoboAlerts with suspect descriptions, among other things, as proactive steps that the University is taking to educate students about what to do when they may be witnessing sexual harassment.

“We expect the number of reports of cases to go up as that information resonates with students,” she said.

With regard to the recent string of incidents, Stump said there is no discernible pattern or connection. However, he said

that UNMPD’s odds of catching suspects increase greatly when they do get the exposure on social media, such as the sharing of information from LoboAlerts.

“Officers caught the last individual due to foot patrols, and the alerts that were put out helped identify the suspect,” he said. “This was a great example of how the community worked together to apprehend a suspect.”

UNMPD takes steps to catch stair-do-well vandals

By David Lynch At some time between the evening hours on Monday and 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a portion of the cement steps on the north side of the SUB were vandalized, with a small area of the steps being destroyed and rubble strewn nearby.

Willie West, manager of grounds and landscaping at the Physical Plant Department, said the damage, which includes a portion of an area that measures about 10 feet by 15 feet, was apparently caused by “someone driving a vehicle up the steps.”

West said UNM staff cordoned the area off early Tuesday “so that no students or visitors would be injured.” Further, a contractor arrived during the day to repair the damaged steps. By Wednesday, the steps were functional and the damage repaired.

One of the ongoing initiatives of the Physical Plant Department,

which maintains campus foundations and structures, is to protect the interior of main campus and the students utilizing it, West said.

To that end, UNM has bollards — short, vertical posts intended to reduce outside vehicle traffic — placed around the campus perimeter. But on Monday night those weren’t enough.

“Obviously, somebody got around them and caused this issue last night,” West said.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, UNM police have not had any leads, according to UNMPD Public Information Officer Lt. Tim Stump.

Journalists’ slayings hit real close to home Most of us have had that moment when something bad has happened and we thought, ‘That could have been me.’

‘I almost went to that theater last night.’

‘I was in that store 30 minutes earlier.’

‘It could have been me; it could have been my family.’

For journalists, we have had at least 70 opportunities to that think this year.

The Wednesday morning shootings of Virginia journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward were the first this year in the United States; these two also have the distinction of being the only ones on the list who died while on the job, but not for doing their job.

The other 68 dead journalists died because of what they were investigating or whom they criticized, because murdering reporters has become a worldwide trend.

It’s a hard thing to realize: that our colleagues are being murdered while doing their jobs; that one day, it could be us.

Journalism tends to get a bad reputation. On television we’re portrayed as sleazy liars, backstabbing people to get the story. In real life we’re portrayed as Rupert Murdoch-types — stealing information for sensational headlines.

Are those things true of some of us? Sure, every profession has the jerks and the sneaks, the people who chose the career for the wrong reasons and give the rest of us a bad name.

Do we sometimes just get it wrong? Oh, yes. Both CNN and Fox News initially misreported the Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling on the Affordable Care Act, and any journalist at the Daily Lobo can give the headline and publication date of their biggest mistakes. As much as we try, we just plain screw it up now and then.

But for most of us, the job is about getting information out to the public. Whether it’s WatergateScandal-big or local-recreation-site-small, we’re just trying to inform the public.

We deliver that information because we believe in transparency. We believe that informed citizens are vital to a democracy. In fact, it’s such a strongly held belief that journalism is the only profession specifically mentioned as protected in the Bill of Rights.

And yet, journalists in Egypt are in hiding. The “Charlie Hebdo” building in France has tightened security. Managers at WDBJ in Virginia are considering a move toward secrecy when it comes to reporting locations. How can we do our jobs, how can we perform this public service, when we are always considered a public menace at best and a threat to national security at worst?

Do we stop talking about corrupt governments and cops who abuse their power? Do we stop covering live music and interesting research? Should we hide behind secure doors that will not open to the public and stop identifying ourselves when out in the field?

No. We shouldn’t. We should continue to do our jobs. We should continue to fight for transparency and information. And we should continue to remember: ‘It could have been me.’

LETTERS Toplessness will lead to more female objectification Editor, While I respect the goal to obtain equal rights among men and women, I was disappointed after I read (Monday’s) story, “Activists Go Without for Topless Equality.”

While their intentions may be to de-sexualize the female body, the results are furthering our objectification as women.

There is a difference between women being the same as a men and being treated as equals. Men and women are different: our

anatomy, our hormones and our general urges set us apart. That does not make one inferior or superior to the other. It makes us different — in beautiful ways. We need to embrace our diversity, while still valuing the life of the other and giving equality to each other.

Women, how are we valuing our bodies by making them out to be less than what they are? That is what this protest showed to me: that women are saying our bodies are as ordinary as men’s bodies. But if we look at the miracles and wonders of the human body, we would recognize that neither the female nor male anatomy is ordinary. They are altogether an amazing creation, intended to be honored, respected and treasured

— not to be treated as mere objects for the world to look at as mundane.

How would women in Albuquerque going topless like men better our society? I don’t see any benefits — only outcomes that result in more objectification of women, less respect for the female body and children being exposed too early to nudity. I see teenagers with developing sexual drives having more unprotected sex if their peers are topless, which could lead to more STDs and unplanned pregnancies.

It may seem like a reach to you, but the correlation seems possible to me. I see men targeting topless women as objects and sexually assaulting them — even though being

topless is not an invitation to be assaulted.

But do they know that? Are we willing to put ourselves at risk just to prove a point?

What would come next: males having the right to be bottomless? I don’t see a more progressive society from this, but a more perverted one. Why? Because women’s bodies will never be valued and respected as they should be, especially topless. I think we deserve better as women.

We are not men. We are women — and we are beautiful.

The UNM Health Sciences Center is providing a cooking class to help participants recover from mental illnesses and substance abuse.

The class is offered at the UNM Psychiatric Center and is a part of the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program.

“PSR practice is guided by the basic philosophy of rehabilitation, which holds that people with disabilities need opportunities to identify and choose for themselves their desired roles in the community with regard to living, learning, working and/or participating in social environments,” according to a UNM HSC press release.

PSR is focused on recovery, selfdetermination, daily living skills and individuals being able to function as independently as possible, said Helen Tafoya, clinical manager at the UNM Psychiatric Center’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program.

“Cooking skills are fundamental to self-care and learning to maintain a budget,” she said.

Skills classes offer support in acquiring basic skills crucial to mental health recovery and personal empowerment, according to the statement. Hands-on classes offered include cooking, ceramics, fabric arts, gardening, photography, basic computer skills, mindful living, creative writing and daily fitness classes.

PSR is funded by Medicaid and the New Mexico Behavioral Health Services Division on a fee-for-service basis, Tafoya said.

“PSR as a whole is based in addressing individualized recovery goals,” she said. “Cooking classes address cooking skill sets and assist individuals in learning how to take care of oneself from a nutritional perspective.”

Participants in the class are expected to take an active role in learning and practicing the skill sets taught, such as basic kitchen safety, meal planning, grocery shopping, how to follow a recipe, how to prepare a meal from ingredients already available and how to maintain proper kitchen cleanliness, Tafoya said.

“Also, those key social skills can

be practiced when consumers must work with each other to prepare a meal or complete another cooking/ kitchen project,” she said.

Each cooking class can accommodate approximately 10 consumers at a time, she said.

The program frequently offers more than one cooking class each cycle, which is 13 weeks for the program.

“Many consumers opt to take several cooking classes over the course of their involvement with PSR,” Tafoya said.

The class also provides an opportunity for participants to take what they’ve learned and apply it to their own lifestyles.

“One consumer who lives with his parents has told me he now cooks at least one meal every weekend for his family. He takes a great deal of pride in that,” she said. “Many consumers who live alone are able to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. And for those on a limited budget, which is almost all the individuals we serve, they are better able to make their food dollars stretch and are able to make better food choices.”

Peter Kennedy, supervisor of community-based services at the PSR, said that the cooking classes improve self-efficacy of the participants and they start trusting their abilities and skills.

“It gives individuals basic skills to live independently,” Kennedy said. “It also provides an opportunity to work as a group. It gives them confidence when they are able to cook a meal for themselves. It is an achievement that many of them may or may not have had prior to this cooking class.”

Tafoya said she saw many consumers with increased self-esteem and pride when they show off the finished product.

“As a group they are more likely to try a new recipe or cooking technique together than any single person would try alone,” she said. “There is also something very healing about cooking a meal in community and then sharing it with others.”

CAMPUS BRIEFS New C&J chair Selected As of the beginning of the fall semester, Janet Shiver is the new chair of the communications and journalism department at UNM, following the retirement of former chair Karen Foss earlier in the month.

According to the department’s website, Shiver has been a fulltime faculty member at UNM since 2007. However, she has been involved at UNM in a variety of facets, including student, teaching assistant and part-time instructor.

In addition to teaching, Shiver also states on her web page that her interests involve researching different methods of learning for students.

“Employers say they want college-educated employees who know how to effectively work in teams,” she said. “I am very interested in exploring the impact of teambased learning on students’ abilities to engage in active learning.”

Shiver has also published several training manuals centered around teaching and teamwork.

Her favorite classes include business and professional speaking, small group communication and public speaking, according to the web page.

She states on the web page that she is honored to be a part of the communications and journalism department.

“I have had the pleasure of working with an outstanding faculty of exceptional scholars and a department with an outstanding reputation,” she states.

The Daily Lobo was unable to speak to Shiver before publication.

University College offers new supports UNM’s University College has created several programs to prepare students for gathering in-depth knowledge and feel empowered by learning.

Academic Foundations courses are designed to help students needing additional support in reading and math, and are intended to deliver not only content, but also to help students develop selfdirected learning, according to a UNM press release.

The fall offerings include 10 sections of Critical Text Analysis, serving 250 students; 25 sections of Quantitative Reasoning, serving 600 students; and five sections of Math Learning Strategies I, serving 125

students, according to the statement.

“This is a very exciting time in University College, as we work on offering innovative ways to expose students to these skills their first semester in college. With these experiences and skills, they will be inspired to create a better tomorrow for themselves, our University and society.” said Sonia Gipson-Rankin, associate dean, curriculum and program development.

“In the past, students were placed in what had been Introductory Studies-Math (IS-M) because of ACT scores,” she said, “but ACT scores are not always indicative of a student’s ability to do more advanced work.”

Community service award nominations open The UNM’s Office of the President is accepting nominations for the Sarah Belle Brown Community Service Award.

The nominations will be accepted through Monday, Sept.28.

“The award, which recognizes the volunteer service work done by members of the UNM community, was established and endowed by former Regent and

Anderson School of Management Dean Doug Brown to honor his wife, Sarah Belle Brown, and her lifelong commitment to public service,” according to a UNM press release.

Each year one faculty member, one staff member, and one student is recognized by the Award for their services to the community and donation of time to the UNM’s public service mission, according to the statement.

The winners receive a cash award of $1,500 with the student recipient receiving a scholarship of the same amount, the statement said.

“For 30 years Sarah Belle Brown has devoted considerable time to the community. Her lifelong interest in helping children and her command of Spanish led her to specialize in teaching English to Spanishspeaking children in Los Angeles,” she said.

“Later in San Francisco, she established a program in that school district focused on assisting newly immigrated Asian children to adapt to a new culture, and that was just the beginning. Mrs. Brown’s work in child advocacy and community service has continued into the present day.”

Researchers to improve emergency care for children The UNM Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and the UNM Emergency Medical Service Consortium joined the universities of Arizona and Oklahoma in the newly formed Southwest Research Node Center to conduct research studies to improve emergency medical care for ill and injured children.

The research node is one of six within the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network, or PECARN, according to the press release.

“New Mexico’s children can benefit greatly from our front-line participation in PECARN studies,” said Dr. Robert Sapien, chief of pediatric emergency medicine at UNM. “We’re excited to be a part of a research effort that can improve the lives of one of our most vulnerable populations – our youth.”

The alliance will use $2.4 million federal funding to develop and conduct PECARN-approved studies that focus on preventing and reducing youth morbidity and mortality, according to the statement. ~ Compiled by Sayyed Shah

Fundraising picnic also features waterslides

Dean Strober, the owner of Blue River Productions, said the RGDSN cause is dear to him and his wife, Lena, because his 2-year-old daughter, Aleeya, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

“That organization has proven incredibly helpful in terms of helping build and maintain a community of people whose

lives are impacted by Down Syndrome,” Strober said. “That’s where the idea came from and why we decided to do it.”

On top of the fundraiser, Strober said Blue River Productions also wanted to create something big that was appropriate and fun for kids of all ages.

“Our approach is ‘if you’re going to do it, go big’ — that ‘go big or go home’ philosophy,” he said.

Strober’s 5-year-old daughter, Zoelle, came up with the idea of a

princess and pirate festival, he said.

“She said, ‘how about a princess and pirate festival’ … So we just kind of trusted our 5-year-old (and) that she would know what other kids would want,” Strober said.

Other activities offered at the festival include interactive soccer and football fields provided by i9 Sports, a large play area for toddlers provided by Gymboree and princess and pirate themed crafts with the help of the Girl Scouts. There will also be a wide variety of vendors for shopping.

The tentative goal of the event is to raise $10,000 for the RGDSN and spread the word about what they do, he said. If this year’s event is successful, Strober said he hopes to make it an annual fundraising event to benefit the network as well as provide a fun event for families in Albuquerque.

Growling and gritty vocals make for misunderstood lyrics

Though the phrase may sound like an oxymoron, it is actually a genre that is growing in popularity among fans of heavy metal.

Melodic metal is a form of metal in which the drums, vocals and bass are as heavy and aggressive as possible, as is the case with most heavy metal, but the guitarist’s role takes on a more melodic aspect as the solos become more symphonic and well-tuned.

“No Epitaphs,” the upcoming release from heavy metal punk band Ramming Speed, is an interesting blend of traditional heavy metal and epic guitar riffs that actually consist of more than fast-paced power chords.

The first track, “No Forgiveness in Death,” gives off an impression of energetic epicness. The fun riffs mixed with the perfect headbanging beat will make fans want to get up and move with the music.

For most metal fans, this feeling will likely last when the gritty vocals of the screamer, I mean, singer, come in. Metal heads are no strangers to indiscernible growling, and most find it fun to mosh to.

Metal heads who are slightly pickier, like this critic, may be disappointed by the vocals and find their energy levels lowered by this disappointment. While the growling is not particularly terrible or unpleasant to listen to, there is also nothing that makes it stand out. Peter Gallagher’s growling sounds like that of any other pissed off man screaming into the microphone. The lack of melodies to match those of the guitar is rather dissatisfying.

What makes it so unimpressive for more musical listeners is not the screaming itself, but the lack of pitch control and diction on Gallagher’s part. If Ramming Speed wants to take the next step in making impressive music,

Gallagher may want to take a page out of Arch Enemy’s book. Alissa White-Gluz, Arch Enemy vocalist, might scream and growl a lot, but you can understand most of what she’s saying when she does so.

Listeners looking for words of inspiration will definitely want to skip this album, as there is absolutely no way to discern whether Gallagher is even speaking English, much less what it is he’s actually saying. Only the most dedicated metal head, with the help of lyric books, will be able to sing along to the distorted words in “No Epitaphs”.

Despite this disappointment, “No Epitaphs” is actually a fun, upbeat album. The music is a catchy blend of old metalinspired solos mixed with the epic guitar intros commonly found in symphonic metal. No one will be able to fall asleep after experiencing the pounding drums in “Horns of War,” and the epic guitar solos in “Break in the Chain” make powering through the vocalist’s gibberish worthwhile.

Guitarists and bassists who enjoy playing metal may find Kallen Bliss, Snake Chuffskin’s and Ben Powell’s playing perfect to inspire the next speed metal solo. Drummers will definitely love the heart-pounding beats of Jonah Livingston. Despite the lack of flair in the vocals, Ramming Speed’s new album stands out from the cookiecutter thrash metal bands that tour these days.

For those who like head-banging, mosh-worthy nonsense rounded out with solos perfect for throwing your horns in the air, “No Epitaphs” may be the next album for you.

Coach shooting for 400th career win with opener Nelson looking to reach milestone at his homecoming tournament

By Liam Cary-Eaves This is no ordinary seasonopening tournament for head coach Jeff Nelson and his New Mexico volleyball squad.

UNM will compete in three games in Muncie, Indiana during the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge. Not only will Nelson face off against some of his former coaching staff, but UNM may be able to award its head coach with his 400th career win - and on a national stage, no less.

The tournament will also be a homecoming for Nelson, as Ball State is his alma mater.

Although Nelson is shooting for a milestone this weekend, he hasn’t hinted anything to his team involving No. 400. Junior outside hitter Cassie House said she had no idea her head coach was going to be playing for a career mark.

“I think it would be a really cool bonus to get a victory against Ball State, his alma mater,” House said.

“But I don’t think there’s any added pressure because I didn’t even know it would be 400.”

Nelson has been a head coach for 21 seasons for three different schools, amassing a 397-234 record.

He is in his ninth year at the helm for New Mexico and has accumulated a 155-87 record as a Lobo.

Ball State, it won’t be the first milestone he achieved against his former school. As head coach of Texas Tech, Nelson garnered his 100th win against Ball State in the Nanook Classic in Fairbanks, Alabama on September 12, 1999.

However, the Lobos will have to

keep a perfect record to celebrate Nelson’s career win. As if there wasn’t already pressure to start the season off on the right foot, UNM will have to take home wins against Belmont and Albany on Friday before playing Ball State on ESPN3 at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

“Any time you can get some exposure it’s good for your program and good for recruiting,” Nelson said.

“Hopefully it will be a great match.”

Nelson said his veteran players are going to be leading the way to start the season off, but added that his incoming

freshmen and transfer players are going to have the ability to earn a spot in some rotations.

“We’re looking to just build the connections and get really comfortable with our lineup,” House said. “Whatever the lineup may be, just making sure it’s sturdy and start a good foundation for the rest of the season.”

New Mexico will likely be beginning the season with a heavy dose of returning players, Nelson said, but the starting libero spot may be handed to incoming freshman Mercedes Pacheco, a recent St. Pius graduate.

Nelson said his excitement to return to Ball State stems from seeing good friends, returning to a beautiful campus and playing against some of his former coaches. However, Nelson said he anticipates a quality atmosphere inside Worthen Arena.

“Volleyball is really a highvisibility sport out there,” Nelson said. “They get good crowds and do a lot of good things with both the men and the women’s programs.”

The opening serve for New Mexico’s 2015 season is scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday against Belmont.

Season opens with top-ranked UCLA Bruins

The New Mexico men’s soccer team will travel to California this weekend to open up its regular season against one of the toughest competitors in the country: UCLA. The Bruins are ranked No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll.

Last year the Bruins advanced to their program’s ninth College Cup final. This season they kept a lot of their talent, as seven of their top 10 scorers will be returning.

UCLA is just one of six teams that UNM will play that made it to the NCAA tournament last year. This doesn’t make for an easy schedule, but the Lobos are enthusiastic.

“I’m really excited about our schedule,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said earlier this month. “We get to test ourselves early against some top teams, both on the road and at home.”

The Bruins already played two exhibition matches. Their first was against the Mexican U-17 national team, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The second was against the San Francisco Dons, against whom the Bruins came out on top with a 2-1 victory.

UCLA is looking strong again this year, but despite the Bruins’ achievements, the Lobos have shown they have no problem keeping up.

The Lobos hosted UCLA last year and fell 2-1. However, UNM dominated the game with an 18-3 edge in shots and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks. That game was an example of what Fishbein said happened last season: “the whole was not greater than the sum of its parts.”

Two years ago the Lobos won the Conference USA regular season title and made it all the way to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament.

Last year was supposed to be an opportunity for the Lobos to build on that success, but things did not go as planned. Although the Lobos held a 11-6-1 overall record, their efforts were not enough to earn them a ticket to the NCAA tournament. It was the first time the Lobos

missed the tournament since 2008.

It was a bit discouraging, but Fishbein said he believes his team has what it takes to be successful this year.

Like UCLA, the Lobos also finished their preseason undefeated, with two wins against Air Force and Grand Canyon, and a draw with Denver.

During these exhibitions Fishbein said he was happy with the cohesiveness of the group and he felt confident that things will sharpen up as the season progresses.

Assistant coach Mike Graczyk agreed with Fishbein and said he think the Lobos have a chance of defeating any opponent as long as they keep working together.

“What I love the most about this group is that it is a team-first group,” he said. “They score together and they keep the ball out of the net together.”

Deep D-line hardens in face of coming season

By Thomas Romero-Salas It takes time to instill a physical mentality. It’s something New Mexico’s defensive coordinator has been working on.

Kevin Cosgrove, who is in his second year at his position, said one of his goals was to get the Lobos to play a more physical style of football.

So far, the team has shown a more aggressive attitude with Cosgrove at the helm.

“I think we have been more aggressive; I don’t think there’s any question in that. That’s a big part of playing defense, but it’s also about taking care of your assignment and doing your job,” Cosgrove said. “We’ve been tackling a lot this camp - more than we ever have since we’ve been here. It has to pay dividends, because we were giving up too many big plays in tackling last year.”

The key question mark that surrounds the defense is tackling. In the course of head coach Bob Davie’s first three years, the Lobos missed numerous tackles that led to big plays for opposing offenses.

Cosgrove said he wants the defense to be sharper in preparation for the opener.

“I like our progress. The attitude has been outstanding,” he said. “We still have some things that we have to get better at. We have to continue to be excellent in our assignment, and I need to have more exactness in that.”
