Professor’s multimedia piece featured in D.C.

By Matthew Reisen A UNM arts professor is being honored by having her work displayed at an exhibit in the nation’s capitol this month.

Fine arts professor Mary Tsiongas’ video artwork, “The Mercurial Dog Anticipates Her,” is being featured in the 2015 Women To Watch exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. It can also be viewed at vimeo.com/88729128.

“It was a wonderful surprise, and I was just thrilled to have it go to Washington, D.C.,” Tsiongas said.

According to the NMWA website, Women To Watch features emerging and underrepresented artists from various states and countries, each exhibition focuses on a specific medium or theme chosen by NMWA’s curators.

This year’s exhibit, the fourth in the series, titled “Organic Matters,” is on display through Sept. 13 and will illuminate “the ways in which contemporary artists re-contextualize images of plants and animals to reflect upon themes of sexuality, gender politics, the abject and the sublime,” according to the site.

Tsiongas said Lisa Becker, curator at the UNM Museum of Art, nominated her to be featured in the exhibit. Once nominated, The New Mexico Committee of the NMWA sent in a collection of five pieces selected by Tsiongas, to Virginia Treanor, the exhibition’s curator.

“I was trying to pick works that fit the theme, which was sort of nature, women and identity and animals,” Tsiongas said.

part of a larger body of work that is called “The Likenesses Of Light.”

“I’m interested in our relationship to the environment, to the natural world, and kind of how that’s changed over the years,” she said.

Additionally, Tsiongas said her theme regards how the public receives and learns from the media, so she wanted to use still images as backdrops for video.

“Initially, the idea was just, ‘let me see if I can find backdrops that I can sort of manipulate and add people to them.’ It was sort of a general interest,” she said.

To that end, she utilized a botanical print from the UNM Art Museum collection, done

by Edward Skeats, a little-known artist from the 1800s. Implementing a green screen in the art lab, Tsiongas made the print into an environmental backdrop for the video.

Tsiongas said she liked the prints and thought the palette was interesting because the paper had yellowed and included flowers and cacti. “The Mercurial Dog Anticipates Her” contains one of those cacti.

“The work is talking about not only just the natural environment, but also water and our relationship, how we manipulate the environment,” she said.

In her artwork, a framed HD video, a person emerges with a pail of water and starts wiping and cleaning, eventually drawing a flower into life.

“The human being is bringing forth a flower by adding water,” she said. “Sometimes we add water to the desert and we change the climate. I mean, we have grass in a place that we shouldn’t have grass.”

In addition to the flower sequence, Tsiongas said she wanted to have a coyote as well.

“Coyotes are very interesting, adaptable animals,” she said. “They adapt to changes

that humans make to the environment.”

For the video, Tsiongas chose a colleague’s dog, Skyla, who has coyote-like features. Tsiongas filmed Skyla pacing in front of the green screen.

“The idea was that the coyote is kind of anticipating change that’s happening, constantly, so it’s back-and-forth movement,” she said.

The video also references early cinema, which Tsiongas called “Buster Keaton-esque.”

“But also I wanted to talk about the relationship of video and painting and drawing. I’m very well aware that drawing and painting is much more archival than video in some ways,” Tsiongas said. “Even though I’m digitally changing those images, those Skeats drawings are probably going to outlast my video.”

Tsiongas said that her current work involves time and how we understand it.

“Not only just our experience of it, but also the physics of time,” she said.

She said she still doesn’t know what the work will end up looking like, but she is developing new videos and finding out how to present them. Her idea involves paper films from the distant past and loading up high-resolution images to convert it to digital film.

“The moving image is one of my favorite mediums,” Tsiongas said. “There’s something about it, too, that when you videotape something, you kind of capture it. I like that about it.”

Tsiongas said her work is influenced by her background in biology, which she studied in college.

“The way I make art is rooted in those early experiences of being a biology student,” she said. “What drew me to the sciences was

sort of the beauty of the natural world.”

Tsiongas said she is happy to have steered more toward art than science in the long run.

“Other ways of being engaged in the world, that is a very positive change for art,” she said. “Because ultimately artists can make you see things that you may not be able to see otherwise.”

LETTERS UNM weapon policy enables offenders and creates victims Editor, On Friday, there was another student alert of a female being groped on UNM main campus. That makes five groping reports in a month (according to KOB Channel 4 news).

As people on campus are being targeted by predators, the UNM policy office states: “No person may use or possess a weapon on any part of campus.”

Also, any weapons found could lead to materials being impounded by law enforcement and disciplinary or criminal action. (The only persons exempt are campus police and “inoperable” weapons

by ROTC).

This policy creates an atmosphere in which any person on campus becomes a walking target, as well as a place in which a predator does not have to worry about whether or not the person they assault has

Real social fabric requires conscious effort to maintain Editor, We live in a society that is more connected, and yet at the same time more disconnected, than ever before. Social media has transformed the way we communicate, and has made creating social connections that previously would have been improbable as easy as clicking a button.

At the same time, repeated studies show that the number of close friends the average American says she/he can talk to in a time of need has dropped sharply over the last half-century. Other evidence points to the same trend: the number of people who would describe themselves as lonely, who

a defensive weapon. Outside of campus people are allowed to carry defensive weapons such as pepper spray, mace, collapsible batons and non-switchblade knives.

People should have the right to defend themselves on campus, and if assaulted have the ability to defend themselves with these or other weapons. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around or approaching you. Use your intuition.

There are too many people on campus walking while talking on their phones, texting or walking with their eyes toward the ground.

Read the book “The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals that Protect Us From Violence” by Gavin De Becker. In the future, I would like to hear more news stories of attackers being subdued by their victims or being forced to flee from their targets.

Trump reminds me of Rupert Pupkin, the comic wannabe in Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy” who kidnaps a talk show host (Jerry Lewis) to get ten minutes on the program.

I kind of like Trump’s unfiltered rant -- it’s audacious, but what he proposes is usually ugly, in line with the Republican agenda.

The guy who scares me more than Trump is Jeb Bush. I lived in Florida when he was

governor, and his only notable achievement was stealing the 2000 presidential election for his idiot brother. The full details of this sordid heist, involving a spurious “Felon Purge,” have been provided by independent journalist Greg Palast, among others.

I particularly liked the letter from Livingstone Morlan, which made a strong case for a scientifically literate country. I

would just add that art is equally important.

Think of what The Captain, Robin Williams, said about poetry in “Dead Poets Society.”

Imagination is as powerful as logic, reason and the scientific method.

We seem to have a lot more “friends,” and a lot fewer real friends. The reason for this largely depends on who you ask.

The religious among us point to a sharp downward trend in religiosity, particularly among the young. More Americans than ever before are describing themselves as not religious, or openly atheist. The religious have a point. For hundreds, if not thousands of years, religious services were the primary social context in which we, as members of a family, engaged with our communities, and other relationships were built upon that shared social bedrock. You lose more than your religion when you stop going to church, and I say that as an atheist.

There are those, too, that claim that it is actually the result of the technology itself -- that the internet, a system designed to connect us, is actually driving us apart. We are making more time for the content that is now at our fingertips at all times, and less for the people in our lives. I can certainly see this phenomenon at work in my life, and I suspect, upon a critical examination, you would be able to as well.

Whatever the reason, I find this trend towards a disconnected society disturbing.

Stable societies are not built by or for disconnected, disengaged individuals. I have this overwhelming sense that the social fabric that binds us together is becoming precariously thin.

You might have heard something like this before, and if you have, you probably heard it from a religious conservative. I

am neither religious nor conservative, but I think that they have a strong point here -- one that deserves to be judged on it’s own merits. We’re mature enough as a society to recognize the importance of the ties that bind us, while at the same time recognizing that LGBT individuals have the right to marry, and that women have the right to choose.

My challenge to my fellow UNM students, especially freshmen, is this: Get Involved. It doesn’t matter what you’re involved in, and I guarantee that you will be better for the experience, so just do it. It’s good for you, it’s good for the UNM community you’re a part of, and ultimately it’s good for our society.

Movie Review

‘Ultra’ is surprisingly timid

By Nathan Reynolds Small-town American angst meets ultra violence in “American Ultra.” At least, that’s supposed to be the joke in the new stoner comedy.

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart are cute and convincing as characters Mike and Phoebe, a slacker couple whose mundane lives are upturned when Mike finds he might be something more than he thought.

Mike is a nervous, unambitious guy who works nights at a convenience store and smokes heavily with his girlfriend, who is the best thing in his life. In one of the funnier recurring jokes, he tries to find the perfect time to propose to Phoebe.

Everyday life is shattered when Mike finds out he might be a government-trained killing machine capable of using anything, including a spoon, as a deadly weapon. Mike and Phoebe go on the run from CIA agents who are determined to round them up, and many violent situations ensue.

The action is on the dirty, low-key side, but there are quite a few fittingly ridiculous moments, such as when Mike decapitates several agents with a dustpan. Most of the humor is derived from the couple’s mildmannered stoner responses to the over-the-top action, with lines like, “babe, I’m really freaking out, I have a lot of anxiety about this” when Mike is nearly killed by said agents.

Eisenberg and Stewart make a good couple. Their codependency comes off as quite natural; there are a number of funny moments when Phoebe has to focus Mike’s attention.

It’s the sort of quirk that longtime couples develop.

“American Ultra” threatens to become a satirical tale of generational discomfort, but never quite achieves full burn. Far too much of the film is dedicated to a subplot that involves infighting among the CIA agents responsible for Mike.

Beyond a vaguely defined sense of ethics, there is never a real reason given for why the CIA faction of the film comes out on top. A good portion of the second act feels like a

misallocation of cinematic resources.

The mystery and emotion behind Mike’s transformation are much more compelling than the half-baked spy games narrative that explains it.

Mike and Phoebe get into plenty of strange situations, but there seems to be reluctance on the part of the filmmakers to let the scenes play out.

All too often the audience is stuck listening to exposition rather than the character interactions, which often turn violent before the scene has a chance to develop much tension.

The protagonists of “American Ultra,” though likable, are stuck in a meaningless construct of a plot, which may be the intended point, but the film never pulls the disparate elements together. The pieces are in place - disaffected millennials, grungy postmodern neighborhood and a morally dubious government authority - but the premise is never fully realized.

Women bust city for sexist ordinance

By Robert Maler It was 95 years ago that American women secured their right to vote. Today, another battle has begun: a campaign for topless equality.

About 50 people gathered near the UNM Duck Pond on Sunday to celebrate Go Topless Day, an event that advocates a revision to Albuquerque’s nudity ordinance, which allows men to walk about the city without wearing a shirt, but outlaws the same act for women.

Event organizer Andrea Runyan said the demonstrators had one simple goal, which was to promote equality in public toplessness.

“Sometimes you don’t know what you are missing unless you experience it,” she said.

Albuquerque’s ordinance dictates that the areola of the female breast must be covered. Runyan said she believes the support for topless equality is there, and that it’s hard to make an argument for restricting one sex, but not the other.

While there are no immediate plans to meet with lawmakers or the city council, she would be willing if the opportunity presented itself.

Physicist Samantha Howard said she moved to Albuquerque from Ohio, where female toplessness is legal, four months ago. She said she didn’t realize Albuquerque was different.

“It seems so silly,” Howard said.

“The fact that it’s 2015 and there are different laws based on gender sets a bad precedent.”

Tucker Adlersflügel, a junior exercise science major who co-organized the event, said the public tends only to see the female breast in a sexualized context. Adlersflügel said that by making the sight more common in everyday life, it can become less racy.

you don’t say, ‘How could you show that?’” he said.

Brian Stinar, a senior Russian major, said he thinks the cause could ultimately be successful in achieving change.

“I would be surprised if it didn’t change,” he said. “Look at gay marriage, nationalized health — all sorts of things are going a different direction. Social change is accelerating.”

CNM student Caitlin Murphy said she hoped women baring their chests could lead to a new social norm.

“I think that over time, people would become accustomed to seeing women’s bodies in their natural state,” Murphy said. “Eventually, it won’t be so taboo.”

Adlersflügel said there are plans to host a similar event in the near future, and hopes to make it a monthly meet-up.

“I’d feel safer. With the rate that I get emails saying people are being groped, people are being grabbed or people are even being attacked or kidnapped…I don’t feel safe being on this campus. I used to live on campus, until I realized I don’t feel safe.”

“I would actually support that a lot, I don’t see any problem with that. I’ve been here for three years and [in that span] once in a while there’s [an incident], and this semester there’s been like four or five. So I feel like maybe it’s a thing that’s going around, like some fraternity or with hazing or something. But I still think it’s disgusting and that Albuquerque’s going downhill.”

“I think I would support it, I’d feel safer in general walking around campus at night. That last one happened during the day, but how often does that happen?

Over time, I feel like they happen more often at night. I feel like during the day, it would be hard for cops to see everything that’s going on just because there’s so many people on campus. It might be good to have more walking around at night.”

Developing countries developing cultures UNM students look for connections between booming economies and wealth distribution

By Sayyed Shah New jobs are beginning to emerge in developing and underdeveloped countries. Economies are opening up and people are moving to major cities in search of new career opportunities. Agrarian societies are turning into industrial societies.

A UNM researcher is examining how these recent changes in socioeconomic opportunities affect the distribution of wealth in China and Bangladesh.

“Previously, these societies have been agrarian and most people subsisted in fairly similar ways. Everyone was a farmer and everyone had similar things. But now that the economies are opening up and they are integrating with regional economies, people have different opportunities,” said Siobhán Mattison, assistant professor of evolutionary anthropology.

The study, headed up by

UNM, is funded by the National Science Foundation. Researchers from University of Missouri and Furmen University, partners in the study, will also provide some financial support. The project is also funding several undergraduate and graduate students at these host institutions, Mattison said.

“It is a great training opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students,” she said.

The project is currently at its early stages and researchers are currently developing instrument for gathering data.

“We are comparing two locations, Bangladesh and China, to examine how recent changes in socioeconomic opportunities basically affect the distribution of wealth,” she said. “One thing that we are really interested in learning about is how a particular social context affects peoples’ access to new kinds of wealth that are coming in,” she said.

The researchers are hoping to extend their study to other countries beyond China and Bangladesh, she said.

“They can work as wage laborers at places that are fairly remote from these locations; they can work globally in the tourism industry,” she said. “We are trying to see what kind of social networks facilitate access to those opportunities.”

She said she and her partners

became interested in the project when they were in their respective field sites.

“It became really clear that all of the things we were focusing on as anthropologists, that we considered to be traditional, particularly in the Chinese context, were changing, and they were changing really quickly.

And this is something that affects a lot of anthropological studies of human population,” she said.

The researchers are also investigating how the economic changes are affecting traditions in China and Bangladesh.

“Increasingly these communities are becoming integrated into the wider regional or global markets,” Mattison said. “What happens as this integration takes place is that some traditions are lost. Things are taken out specifically. We want to know how that happens.”

The researchers are also figuring out how different kinds of communities shape different

kinds of opportunities, she said.

“Different family structures within Albuquerque, for example, might have different ways of accessing these kinds of opportunities,” she said. “What we find out in the context of China and Bangladesh we are hoping will also be relevant for local socioeconomic kinship.”

Zubair Abro, a graduate anthropology student, said anthropological research is required to understand the complex socioeconomic fabric of South Asia.

“Things are changing really quickly — quicker than we are expecting,” he said. “There is a need to explore the changes and see how those changes impact the family system and health institutions of those countries.”

YouTuber draws crowd for rape culture talk

Laci Green, a 25-year-old sex education activist and YouTube vlogger, is combating rape culture one college campus at a time.

Green, who recently received her degree from UC Berkeley on rape nature and causes, filled the SUB Ballroom with more than a thousand students, staff and interested persons Thursday night — an uncommon occurrence for UNM events. Her discussion focused on defining and describing what rape culture is and how to confront it.

“Whenever I talk about rape culture online, there is a lot of skepticism,” Green said.

During her talk, Green displayed statistics that suggest sexual assault is a “common” occurrence, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. One in 33 men, one in 20 women, one in eight transgender youth, one in seven homosexual men, one in four homosexual women and one in three disabled persons have experienced sexual violence, according to the statistics she presented.

“Perpetrators will rape an average of six times,” Green read from one of her slides. “The predators are not commonly punished for their crimes.”

Green’s focus for the lecture was sexual assault on college campuses.

Using the University of South Indiana as a case study, Green said she looked into multiple cases of men assaulting women and noticed a common trend: perpetrators were sympathized with, and the victims were blamed.

“Sympathy for the boys, but not for the victim. Her life was torn apart and no one cared or was sympathetic,” Green said. “The rapist graduates, and the victims’ lives are turned upside down... it’s hard to see the rapist in class, and (she) takes a semester off.”

Not only is sexual assault illegal, it is also illegal for schools not to take action in response to it, regardless of gender or race, according to Title IX, she said.

Green also touched on gender roles and sexual objectification during her presentation, using the blatant rape-based lyrics for “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke.

“It’s funny, like the words a rapist would say — ‘You’re a good girl.

I know you want it,’” Green said.

Her slide show included victims presenting the words to be sexual objectification and predatory.

As Green closed, she explained that standing up as a bystander, knowing when rape culture is being perpetuated and challenging the norms will lead to the end of it.

“The only reason I’m here is to raise awareness about sexual violence, how common it is and the attitudes about it, so that we can change that and bring down the rates of sexual assault,” Green said.

Tomas Aguirre, dean of students, said he was impressed by the data, presentation and student participation at the event.

“Here we had over a thousand students, (and) you could just tell (they) were fired up,” Aguirre said.

He said Green is relatable, has a message that resonates with students and presents facts in a palatable way.

NIH grant shows faith in researchers

The UNM Clinical and Translational Science Center announced last week that it has received a $23 million grant renewal from the National Institutes of Health through its Clinical and Translational Science Award.

UNM shares this award with more than 60 other institutions around the United States, including many of the nation’s top universities and Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Dartmouth, according to the CTSA website. The CTSA is among the most prestigious awards from the NIH, said John Arnold, director of news and multimedia services at HSC. The UNM Health Sciences Center first received the award in 2010, according to the Center’s press release.

The CTSA helps research teams break barriers and streamline research process, thereby meeting the needs of scientists to help create new research and treatments that will meet current and future health challenges, according to the NIH website.

Lobos come close vs. top teams

There’s no tougher way to start the season than what the New Mexico women’s soccer team experienced at the Lobo Invitational this past weekend.

The Lobos faced two top15 teams, including No. 1 in the nation, at their season-opening classic in Florida State and Texas Tech. The Lobos dropped both games, 3-1 on Friday night to the defending national champion Seminoles, and 1-0 Sunday to the No. 15 Red Raiders.

Despite the losses, the Lobos kept pace with both squads for significant stretches. Florida State’s offensive efficiency proved too much for the Lobos to handle, but UNM head coach Heather Dyche felt disappointed in the team’s inability to convert goals against Texas Tech.

In Sunday’s game, she said, the Lobos let it slip away.

“I thought today was a frustrating one because we did enough to win it,” Dyche said. “We created some really good chances at the end there that we needed to put away, and I think if you play an opponent like that you’re not going to get 20 chances, so if you get three, one of them needs to be a goal.”

Texas Tech forward Janine Beckie took a well-played ball out of the Red Raiders’ defensive side to score a goal 13 minutes into the game. Forward/midfielder Caity Heap found Beckie onside on a run, and Beckie found an open shot from 30 yards out.

After the goal, New Mexico created six solid chances in the first half to net an equalizer, but couldn’t finish. Texas Tech deflected four of those six shots. After the first 45 minutes, both teams took seven shots, but the Lobos tried six corner kicks to the Raiders’ one.

That trend continued into the second half. The Lobos attempted another eight shots, including two more on goal.

For the game, senior Lobo midfielder Lindsey Guice took two shots and sophomore midfielder Claire Lynch fired three shots with two on goal. Redshirt senior forward Madisyn Olguin also took three shots.

Forward Cheyna Williams, Florida State’s top returning scorer from last year’s national championship run, had a big opening weekend in recording a goal and two assists. After scoring the game-winner against New Mexico on Friday, Williams provided an assist to the only goal of Sunday’s early game.

Williams initially fired a shot at USC’s Sammy Jo Prudhomme with seven and a half minutes in regulation. The Trojan goalie made save, but Seminole midfielder Isabella Schmid scored on the rebound shot attempt.

GRANTS — On Aug. 19, a new Miss Pueblo of Acoma was crowned at the Sky City Cultural Center & Museum. Stephanie Riley, 25, will represent Acoma Pueblo for the 20152016 year.

The ceremony began with a few words from the Miss Pueblo of Acoma Pageant Organization officer Shayai Lucero. Lucero remarked about the difficulties of recruiting the tribe’s young women to run in the pageant.

Many decline to run due to minimal knowledge of the Acoma Pueblo language of Keres. The organization recognized it as an obstacle and added more language support.

Part of their vision is to encourage young Acoma women to learn and speak the Acoma language, practice the traditions, and model leadership.

Report: State no longer faced with severe drought SANTA FE — The last time New Mexico’s drought levels were this low was in January 2011, more than four years ago.

The U.S. Drought Monitor report released Aug. 20 shows severe drought has disappeared from the state, leaving behind lesser levels of dryness in the western half of New Mexico. Just one year ago, severe and extreme drought conditions covered more than two-fifths of the state.

Senators seek answers on mine spill SANTA FE — New Mexico Sens.

joining a bipartisan group of their Senate colleagues in Colorado and Utah to urge the Environmental Protection Agency Office of Inspector General to examine a critical set of questions regarding the Gold King Mine spill that occurred in the Animas River earlier this month.

The Senators’ announcement came as Gov. Susana Martinez ordered the New Mexico Environment Department to investigate the waste spill that impacted the Animas River in Northwest New Mexico and Southwest Colorado.

Official: Declining oil prices to affect revenues SANTA FE — New Mexico’s top finance official said declining oil and gas prices will continue to cut into revenues, but the state has enough money to follow through with education reforms and public safety mandates.

The head of the Department of Finance and Administration, Tom Clifford, updated members of the Legislative Finance Committee on the latest revenue outlook during a meeting Aug. 19 in Taos. Clifford’s agency said revenues from oil and gas are expected to be around $840 million for the 2016 fiscal year. That’s more than 16 percent less than the last fiscal year.

Torrance County approves medical pot greenhouse EDGEWOOD — The Torrance County Commission allowed a medical marijuana growing

operation to go forward.

In only 10 minutes, the commission voted to uphold its planning and zoning director’s interpretation of its ordinance, giving approval to a medical cannabis growing operation near Mountainair. At its meeting two weeks previously, the commission had continued its executive session after hours of testimony, but no action was taken. The issue was planning and zoning director Steve Guetschow’s interpretation of the county’s subdivision ordinance, which specifically allows low-impact agriculture and farming, including the cultivation of plants.

Neighbors argued that the five hoop greenhouses constitute commercial use of the property, which is in a “conservation zone” which, according to the ordinance, “protects and preserves areas within the county which are characterized by their limited access, minimal development, limitations on water resources, natural beauty, fragile environment and native wildlife populations.”

Councilor withdraws teen curfew resolution SANTA FE — An Albuquerque city councilor has withdrawn his resolution to seek a change in state law that would give local governments the authority to impose teen curfews.

Councilor Ken Sanchez made the decision Aug. 17 after Gov. Susana Martinez announced that she would put the question on the agenda for the next legislative session in January.

The City Council was set to discuss the proposal during their meeting.

Dozens of speakers weighed in on

the resolution. Supporters contend a teen curfew would help reduce juvenile crime, while others argued such measures would increase the potential for conflicts between teens and law enforcement. Albuquerque imposed a curfew during the 1990s, but it was struck down in court following a challenge by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Airports across the state to receive federal aid SANTA FE — Nine airports across New Mexico will share more than $3 million in federal grants for runway expansions and other improvements.

Members of the state’s congressional delegation announced the funding Aug. 18. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich said local airports serve as an economic engine for many New Mexico communities and the funding will help make them stronger while boosting commerce and increasing travel.

The city of Alamogordo is getting the lion’s share — $1.4 million — to extend a runway to better accommodate local aircraft. Lea and Colfax counties, the village of Questa, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo and the cities of Clovis, Grants, Farmington and Santa Rosa will also receive funding for projects that range from resealing pavement to building taxiways.

Federal judge denies hold on oil and gas SANTA FE — A federal judge has denied a request by environmentalists to put on hold oil and gas development

in northwestern New Mexico that stems from the approval of dozens of permits over the last two years by the Bureau of Land Management.

U.S. District Judge James Browning issued his ruling late on Aug. 14. At least one environmental group plans to appeal. Environmentalists contend the BLM’s Farmington office violated federal environmental laws by approving 265 permits since 2013 and that more development could harm the environment and archaeological and cultural sites in the region.

The BLM has declined to comment directly on the litigation but maintains that it reviews all permitted wells to ensure compliance with state and federal laws. Browning also cleared the way for the American Petroleum Institute to participate in the case.

Officials: Servers blocked Democratic Party emails SANTA FE — State officials are acknowledging that emails from the domain belonging to the Democratic Party of New Mexico were blocked from state servers after being identified as spam four years ago.

On Aug. 17, officials with the state Department of Information Technology detailed the cause of the email flap as the party called for an investigation. Party spokesman Scott Tillman said Democrats first noticed emails being returned in July, after requesting information from the Secretary of State’s office.

The office denied doing anything to block the emails, saying it was the IT Department that maintained the state government email system.

Youth tourney draws thousands

By Liam Cary-Eaves The New Mexico Soccer Tournament Complex in Bernalillo witnessed plenty of action throughout the Rio Rapids Open on Saturday and Sunday.

Youth teams affiliated with the Colorado Rapids from New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and Colorado made the trek to the biggest soccer complex in the Albuquerque area.

The preseason tourney showcased players ranging from U-9 through U-14 for both boys and girls.

More than 125 teams across four age classes competed in a minimum of three games for a chance to take home some hardware.

Head coach Ryan Creager of Colorado Rapids Burgundy brought his squad down from Denver and found a lot of success in the tournament.

He said the tournament was a good way to give his kids some exposure to high-caliber play. In his first time coaching for the Rio Rapids Open, Creager went 2-0 on Saturday, bringing his team to the finals on Sunday.

“Obviously, it’s a good feeling -- every time the ball goes into the back of the net, it’s a good feeling,” Creager said. “I think they did a really good job, and I’m just really proud of them.”

Creager’s U-14 club took home a dominating 12-0 victory in the first match on Saturday, leading to Creager’s decision to give his backup goalie, Noah Rhodes, a shot to play keeper.

“It felt good going up five to zero on them,” Rhodes said. “It didn’t matter, though; I was still focused.”

Creager said Rhodes, the

6-foot-1 backup keeper, was able to provide some intimidation to Albuquerque United Football Club during the win. Overall, though, Creager said his team was well able to take advantage of the opportunities, and that’s all he could ask for as a head coach.

“Any time we can help out our affiliates, it’s a good thing,” Creager said.

Dillon Good, a Bosque School graduate, said it was fun to get out and watch some soccer.

Good had played at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex dozens of times, including for state championships.

“I don’t even remember there being this many people for (the state championships),” Good said.

“It was fun to get out here again.”

Fans, teams and family members were scattered all across the 22 soccer fields to watch the vast number of teams play.

All of the teams participating in the tournament are affiliated with the Colorado Rapids, giving the professional soccer club all of the rights to the players arising from their system. Albuquerque’s largest soccer club, the Rio Rapids, fields boys and girls ranging from 4 to 19 years old.

The nonprofit organization has five alumni currently on the Lobo soccer team. Jimmy Schneebeck, Lucas Seligman, Justin Hix, Ford Parker & Aaron Herrera all matured through the Rio Rapids Soccer program.

Team shows off air game in final scrimmage

By Thomas Romero-Salas The passing game is starting to look like the real deal for New Mexico.

After three years of not being a threat in the air, the Lobos showed off their new aerial attack in their third and final scrimmage of fall camp.

Both the quarterbacks and the receivers made several plays throughout the scrimmage, including a couple of nice plays by sophomore wide out Delane Hart-Johnson.

“It wasn’t long ago that we couldn’t even throw the ball. We’ve brought in some really good receivers,” head coach Bob Davie said. “We have three quarterbacks that we can get the ball out there to them. So you have to be pleased with that.”

Redshirt junior transfer quarterback Austin Apodaca showed off his arm in the first series that he played. Apodaca hit Hart-Johnson on a curl route, which turned into a 45-yard gain after Hart-Johnson broke a tackle.

Later in the scrimmage, UNM practiced its two-minute offense.

Apodaca had no problem leading

the offense down the field for a 25yard touchdown when he hit HartJohnson in the endzone after the receiver made a double-move on the defensive back.

“I think it went pretty good. I definitely thought I had a good day throwing the ball,” Apodaca said. “I didn’t run the ball very much, but when I did I thought I made some good reads.”

UNM’s running game had some highlights as well. Redshirt senior tailback Jhurell Pressley broke a 30yard score after shifting his way to the endzone. Sophomore transfer running back Daryl Chestnut showed off his speed when he outran the defense on a 40-yard touchdown run.

The defense didn’t have as many big plays as the offense, but they were consistent throughout the night. The defense had several sacks and recovered a fumble.

Junior linebacker Dakota Cox said the defense tackled well during the scrimmage.

“I feel like you could see that as well compared to last year, when guys were breaking free,” Cox said.

“We’re stopping them and we’re getting off the field on third down.”

Injury report Redshirt sophomore center Toye Adewon will miss significant time due to an undisclosed injury, Davie said.

Adewon was injured during Wednesday’s practice. Senior guard Eden Mahina has taken over the center position with Adewon out.

“I’m going to announce something next week. He’s (Adewon) actually going to see a couple of specialists over the next couple of weeks,” Davie said. “He’s going to be out for a significant period, so we won’t be counting on him. I’ll announce a little bit more on him.”

Davie also announced on Saturday that redshirt junior offensive lineman Johnny Vizcaino has decided to give up football for health reasons. Vizcaino, who didn’t play last year, suffered a concussion two years ago in a game and is still dealing with the side effects.

Junior running back Teriyon Gipson might miss the seasonopener. Gipson is scheduled to have surgery to repair a slightly torn meniscus today. Davie said he might

miss two to three weeks of action.

“Teriyon has a little cartilage, a little meniscus,” Davie said.

“He has just a light tear in there.

It was a non-contact injury.”

Practice update

The Lobos will have a light practice on Monday followed by three hard practices, Davie said.

UNM is scheduled to have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off.

“This week is going to be physical practices. It’s going to be a good physical week,” Davie said.
