Albuquerque’s Historic Old Town showcased the state’s cultural diversity during Western Day on Saturday.

Attendees listened to live Western music performances and cowboy poetry in the gazebo, and browsed the multitude of vendors selling items such as authentic horseshoes and handcrafted leather goods on the plaza.

The yearly event was put on by New Mexico’s chapter of the Western Music Association.

“I wouldn’t make it any smaller.”

Being chosen to work on this memorial gives Rivera a sense of pride, he said.

“I am elated. I’m glad and humbled to see all these people coming together, and there’s no way that they cannot have the piece that they want,” Rivera said. “These boys lost their lives for us, and now this is going to happen.”

Joe Padilla wants to be the mouthpiece for his family on relating the feelings this memorial inspires in them and the impact it has on the neighborhood of Barelas, he said.

“Rebecca asked me one day, ‘What is the importance of this memorial?’ and I said, ‘I want to see my brother’s likeness,” Joe Padilla said.

Photos are all the families have left to remember their sons, he said.

“When I see that sculpture, it’s lifelike and I can say, ‘Welcome back, boys,’” Joe Padilla said. “To us — the Padillas — this is very personal … We never got to see our brother’s remains.

He was in a sealed casket.”

All four of the Padilla brothers served in the Vietnam conflict, but Pete Padilla was the only one among them who did not come home, Joe Padilla said.

“I want to see my brother like I am looking at a real person in 3 dimensions,” he said. “Even though it’s in bronze, to me he’s back.”

The fallen sons of two Barelas neighborhood families are finally being memorialized at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Marine Pfc. Manuel Mora and Marine Sgt. Pete Padilla gave their lives in service during the Vietnam conflict. The NHCC promised in 2000 to honor Mora and Padilla with a park and memorial.

Now, 14 years later, that promise is being kept.

The story of the memorial starts not with the promise, but 30 years earlier, when the city of Albuquerque founded a memorial park for the two boys from Barelas.

Pete Padilla’s older brother, Joe Padilla, said the park stood until 1999, when its badly weathered remains were torn down and the NHCC was built on the grounds.

One year later, the Albuquerque City Council and the board members of the NHCC promised the families of Mora and Pete Padilla a memorial to the two heroes.

Yet the frequent turnover of NHCC board members cost the families years of progress, Joe Padilla said.

“One goes out and another member comes in, then he has to be confirmed by the governor,” Joe Padilla said. “Then a year later or so, one goes out and another member comes in, so this is all new to the new board members.”

Although Joe Padilla wanted his brother remembered, he has been advocating for Mora as if he were family too, he said.

“The idea of the bronze sculpture with the two Marines standing side-

by-side was fantastic,” Joe Padilla said.

Everything changed when Rebecca Avitia, the NHCC’s newest executive director, took over, he said.

Avitia said she had to investigate the work of a long chain of former directors to get to the bottom of the promised memorial. But once she did, she said, she was able to make a lot of headway in very little time.

“I had a handful of top priorities for my first six months, (and) the memorial park was one of them,” Avitia said. “I think there has been a series of changes in leadership here that have certainly slowed the process.”

There was little in the way of plans and records when it came to the memorial, Avitia said, but she met with the families, members of the board and even Cabinet Secretary Veronica Gonzales to make sure the 15-year-old promise was kept.

“I just knew it had to be dealt with, it had to be fixed,” she said.

“Something had to be done because where it was sitting was not healthy for anybody.”

Finally, the day came when an artist was selected. The families and the NHCC chose Sonny Rivera, a local sculptor who is himself a veteran.

Rivera, who is in the process of completing the memorial for Mora and Pete Padilla, said the community of Barelas, including other former Marines, has been adamant about the memorial depicting these two soldiers.

Rivera said he wanted to make the two life-sized, as befitted the heroes.

“To make a sculpture worth its weight in gold … to give it the position that you need, I wouldn’t go less than 6 feet,” Rivera said.

Little Daylight’s album catchy, but doesn’t excite

by Stephen Montoya Electronic vibes channeled straight from the ‘80s find a fresh revival with Little Daylight’s first full-length release, aptly titled “Hello Memory.”

The hooks on some of the tracks of this album are intriguingly misleading. The wellproduced album has quite a few things going for it: quality musicians, hooks and beats that curl in close to the listener and a vocalist whose control and range hints at a lot of undiscovered talent.

The problem, though, is the content of the songs. It’s as though Little Daylight stole a teenage girl’s diary and set the entire thing to music.

“Overdose” is another catchy, upbeat synth pop song. It’s a dark subject masquerading as a love song, but it is underwhelming at best. Barely veiled analogies like “Need you like a drug/you keep me wanting/oh oh I come undone” and “You’re my favorite high” weaving in and out of the toe-tapping tune may leave listeners unsure about what exactly they’re supposed to feel.

The album’s strongest track, “Siren Song,” is infectious and upbeat from beginning to end. The craftsmanship is impeccable, with a voice layering that adds depth to the track. The guitars and synthesizers mix to perfection.

“Mona Lisa” shows the range of Little Daylight’s approaches to each song writing

style. This effort is so Top 40 it could easily have a spot on “Glee.” The pop hook seems to come from a paint-by-numbers writing approach that is disappointing after hearing the previous two excellent tracks.

“Nothing to Lose” brings the album back to an upbeat tempo. The sadness of the previous track, “Be Long,” needed this structure as an uplifting relief. The synthesizer comes in fast like a breath of fresh air and jolts the listener into a wavelike atmosphere. The chorus features some great echo voice effects and sounds like a “Yeah Yeah Yeahs”-inspired song. This track features some of that cool New York-inspired punk synth.

The final song, “Never Go Back,” is a proper album closer with a slow synth start and then — surprise! — a great club-like atmosphere.

If the band had chosen to take this route for more songs on this album, it would’ve been a stronger record. Taking a risk and cutting the safety net of pop choruses worked well.

On a scale of 1 to 10, “Hello Memory” is a strong 5 to a light 6. With a bit more seasoning, Little Daylight has an opportunity to become huge.

Comic book women are not men’s sexual objects

I went to the Albuquerque Comic Expo recently, and I was utterly dismayed by what I saw.

I was introduced to the worlds of “The Fantastic Four” and “the Avengers” when I was only a tiny child, moving with my family from state to state every few years. My father, as a young boy in the ‘60s, read the genesis of Spider-Man, Thor and Daredevil. So when he had boys of his own, he would take my older brother and I to comic book shops no matter where we lived to buy what few comics we could scrounge from bargain bins selling them three for a dollar.

West Coast, East Coast, small town or big city — no matter where we lived, we could find comic book shops.

Sanctioned by my father’s childhood memories and interests, we delved headfirst into the hobby, reading grand stories of heroes and villains, of success and defeat, always with a dream of that essence of humanity that makes people truly extraordinary.

As I grew older, I began to notice subtexts that bothered me: women were often, if not always, utterly sexualized, looking to tease or tantalize rather than act like people.

Male-to-female ratios for superhero teams would often be 5-to-1, but the token of women always looked the same: wobbling triple-G breasts that formed buoyantly under skimpy costumes that looked nothing like what was worn by the male heroes.

Even as I passed through puberty, I felt confused by this massive dichotomy. Was it supposed to entice me? Mostly, I found it distracting and annoying. I read comics for the tales of battles with evil and the courage to overcome personal doubt and fear. I wasn’t there to be addled by jiggling cartoon titties.

Now I’m an adult, but I still love comic books. Thanks to international financial success of movie adaptations, comic books have slowly entered into mainstream and I work hard every day on writing and producing my own. Baffling things have happened, like Iron Man actually becoming not incredibly boring — a complete surprise to me.

And so I pulled the trigger on something I’d been meaning to do for a long time: go to a comic book convention. Mostly it was great, astounding. Mostly.

The images of women in comic books had bothered me my entire life, but I was able to look at them in small chunks: one female hero or villain would offer their bodies up to

the reader, no one else; I could wrinkle my nose in annoyance and move on.

At the Albuquerque Comic Expo, this was impossible. I was bombarded on all sides by images of the same woman.

Sometimes she was dressed in different colors or had different hair, but it was the all the same: a woman — less a person and more an object — existing solely for the sexual gratification of men.

All her sexual features were violently exaggerated, each of her poses with coy winks or seductive leans, all to better expose herself as an invitation to bestial voyeurism.

No wonder nerd hobbies are male-dominated. It’s an echo chamber of softcore porn targeted at preteen boys. I want all people to love the geeky things I do: comic books, pen and paper role-playing, overly complex board games, Here are my two hopes: To all nerd-curious women of the world: First, please ignore the “Sex Sells” images that paint literally everything in our culture.

I really do apologize. You are, in fact, completely welcome — even if it may not seem that way.

Creators and companies try to appeal to an already mostly male base, and re-

fuse to grow or change. Feminism is a vital rhetoric that needs to be heard, especially in nerdy subcultures.

The internet is a vile place for wonderful, nerdy feminists like Anita Sarkeesian to articulate patterns of women getting the constant short end of the stick, only to have the shouting anonymity respond with threats of raping her to death.

Stay classy, cretins.

Second, to the nerd world at large: It’s not a woman’s fault if they don’t like you. All the “men’s rights” gibberish is as asinine as it is repugnant. Patriarchy is as real as anything, built to maintain that fragile, defensive sense of masculinity.

I can’t believe I even have to say this, but guys, can you please just, you know, treat women like they’re people and not sex objects that lack all human qualities and exist only for your sexual gratification?

That’d be great.

Lobo games to be broadcast

On Tuesday, New Mexico and the Mountain West Conference announced that the Lobos’ Aug. 30 season and home opener against UTEP will be broadcasted by the Mountain West Network at 6 p.m.

It will be broadcasted exclusively on the MWN and CampusInsiders. com. UNM’s game against UTEP is one of seven that will be shown on both sites.

The University also announced that UNM’s Sep. 20 road game at New Mexico State will be shown on Aggie Vision, meaning that 11 of the Lobos’ 12 contests will be broadcasted via television or online.

The only game not scheduled for broadcast is UNM’s Oct. 4 road game at the University of Texas-San Antonio.

Nine of UNM’s 12 games are scheduled to be broadcasted on television this upcoming season.

In June, ROOT Sports announced that it will carry four of UNM’s games, including three road games and just one home game, all of which are conference games.

“We are excited to bring another year of New Mexico football to Lobos fans,” said David Woodman, ROOT Sports general manager.

Women get a peek at football life with clinic

UNM will host its 21st annual New Mexico Women’s Football Clinic on July 24th at Branch Field.

The clinic gives women a firsthand look at how the Lobo football program operates. Attendees will also get to meet with head coach Bob Davie and his coaching staff.

“The Lobo Football Women’s Clinic has become a great tradition here at UNM for me and my staff,” Davie said in a statement on golobos.com. “We cherish the opportunity to give the women of New Mexico a glimpse of what Lobo football is all about.”

Activities for the clinic include a question and answer session, a tour of the Lobo football facilities, on-field drills with instructions from players and coaches

and a free t-shirt for attending.

“There are a lot of women who are pretty savvy when it comes to football,” assistant coach Jason Lenzmeier said in a statement. “It’s not like we’re trying to introduce them to football; it’s just taking them through a day in the life of a Lobo football player.”

The event costs $30 to participate, and the proceeds go to the Send-A-Kid Program, which allows underprivileged youths to attend Lobo football games.

by J.R. Oppenheim Craig Snow contributed to the Lobos’ recent string of success in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now he will see what he can do in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

New Mexico Highlands University announced on Twitter Thursday that the three-year UNM assistant coach is to be its new men’s basketball head coach. Snow will replace Joe Harge at the helm of the Division II Cowboys, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Association team that went 11-15 last season.

“Leaving UNM, no matter what the opportunity, was going to be bittersweet,” Snow told the Daily Lobo on Thursday. “To be able to be this close to Albuquerque, where we’ve been for 10 years, and to be branching out in northern New Mexico is something my family is looking forward to.”

Highlands sports information director Matthew Lofton said in an

email that the structure of Snow’s contract is year-to-year, a common practice among Division II schools, and Snow’s at-will employment comes at the discretion of NMHU President James Fries.

Media reports also stated that Brandon Mason, another UNM assistant coach, will join Snow’s coaching staff at NMHU; but Snow said he cannot comment publicly on the reports.

When Snow arrives in northern New Mexico, he must hit the ground running. The late hire gives Snow a short recruiting window. He said the challenge lies in getting everything in place and finding the right components at such a late stage in the process.

“We have to get a firm grasp of what we have coming back, and we have to get well-versed in admissions and scholarship situations,” Snow said. “We have about four or five weeks until

school starts and we have about four months until our first practice.”

Certainly smaller Division II schools like Highlands don’t net the talent Division I programs acquire, but Snow said he doesn’t believe the fact will hurt him. The 10 years of experience coaching at various levels in New Mexico grants Snow a solid network to aid his recruitment efforts, he said.

“Maybe, instead of recruiting the best player on a certain AAU team, you’re recruiting the kid that’s passing the ball or is a role player in a certain spot,” Snow said. “I think, for me, we have a really good built-in infrastructure in the state of New Mexico, the state of Arizona, especially, and internationally.”

Snow spent three years on UNM basketball staff, including his last two as an assistant coach. Hired as a video coordinator under Steve Alford, Snow moved up to director of basketball operations in his second year.

During Snow’s years at UNM, the Lobos went 86-20 and earned bids to the NCAA tournament each season.

“It’s bittersweet to lose Coach Snow because he’s been such a big part of our program,” UNM head coach Craig Neal said in a statement. “However, this is a great opportunity for him to be a head coach of his own program, and I am very excited for him.”

While Snow assisted in the successes and coached good players, he said the mentorship of both Alford and Neal aids his career. Snow said those two coaches have a strong reputation within national and international circles for the way they recruit and develop talent, and for the way they build programs.

Snow said he learned quite a bit from them about basketball — not strictly from an ‘X’s and ‘O’s standpoint, but from a management position.

“Those are things I can’t thank

them enough for,” he said. “I feel like the three years I was there, we won a lot of games and won championships.

I had an opportunity to coach a lot of good players, but at the end of the day my time with those two guys is going to be so beneficial for my career long-term.”

Prior to his arrival at UNM, Snow served as the athletic director and boys basketball coach at Bosque School in Albuquerque.

He also played collegiately for Evansville University, where he scored 1,530 points, averaged 12.6 points per game, and shot 46 percent from the field.

Highlands also hired Brianna Finch to lead its women’s basketball program.

College presidents against unions for athletes

WASHINGTON — Northwestern University on Thursday urged the National Labor Relations Board to overturn a regional ruling that would allow its scholarship football players to unionize, holding up the football program as exemplifying the university’s integration of athletics and education.

In a 60-page brief filed with the labor board in Washington just hours ahead of a midnight deadline, the university laid out its opposition to student athletes forming a union and asked to argue its case before the board.

The regional director’s decision “transforms what has always been a cooperative educational relationship between university and student into an adversarial employer-employee relationship,” the university said in the brief.

Northwestern’s brief was one of several filed Thursday by organizations on both sides of a March 26 ruling by a regional director of the labor board that could revolutionize college sports. The director ruled that football players who receive full scholarships to the Big Ten school qualify as employees under federal law and therefore can unionize.

An employee is regarded by law as someone who, among other things, receives compensation for a service and is under the strict, direct control of managers. In the case of the

Northwestern players, coaches are the managers and scholarships are a form of compensation.

An organization of college presidents filed a friend-of-the-court brief taking strong issue with the regional director’s ruling.

“Student-athletes participate for their own benefit; they do not render services for compensation,” said the 1,800 member American Council on Education. They “are not employees and therefore not subject to the National Labor Relations Act.” The full labor board is weighing the case but has no deadline for a ruling.

In asking the board to overturn the ruling, Northwestern University said that its Chicago-region director “overlooked or ignored key evidence that Northwestern presented showing that its student-athletes are primarily students, not employees.”

Instead the regional director’s decision “relied incorrectly on a common-law definition of employee that considered the amount of control an employer has over an employee,” said Northwestern, which is located in Evanston, Illinois.

In its own brief, the fledgling College Athletes Players Association argued that Northwestern football is a commercial enterprise from which the university derives substantial financial benefits. “They are entitled to representation ... the regional director’s decision should be affirmed,” the union said.

“this case involves the same questions that arise in every representation case: Do the players perform services for the university? Do they work under the university’s supervision and direction? Do they receive compensation for their work?”

Answering in the affirmative, the players’ union said that under federal law, the players are entitled to vote on whether to unionize “and to pursue a collective voice to address their working conditions.”

The Northwestern college athletes on scholarship did hold an election in the spring. However, the ballot box was sealed pending a final NLRB decision.

In other voices in the case: —The AFL-CIO labor union asserted in its brief that the Northwestern football program “functions as a largely autonomous commercial enterprise that is affiliated with and generates revenue for the university. There is no question that the players...‘work for’ the Northwestern football program in much the same way as professional athletes.”

MLS looking to steady growth after World Cup

by Ronald Blum and Janie McCauley Even before millions of people packed into outdoor fan parties, ran out to bars for long lunches and sneaked peeks of games at their offices during the Americans’ World Cup run, Major League Soccer began thinking about how to convert some of those fans into supporters for its own teams.

Playing its 19th season and preparing for an expansion to 24 teams in its post-David Beckham era, MLS has grown in support and interest but remains a feeder league — with most young star players it produces leaving for more lucrative contracts in Europe.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber wants to change that quickly, and it only helps his cause when stars such as Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley come home to play on U.S. soil.

“We want to be thought of the way the Premier League is thought of, Serie A is thought of, La Liga is thought of, the Bundesliga is thought of,” Garber said. “When people think about the best leagues in the world, everybody knows who they are, and we want to be one of those leagues.”

Dempsey and Bradley each returned to MLS from Europe in the past year. Jermain Defoe joined Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill as the league’s top international attractions. David Villa and Kaka already are signed for 2015 and Frank Lampard may be on the way, too.

Garber has set 2022 as the year for MLS to achieve his goal and says that while the league has come a long way, it still has a lot further to go.

To attract top players, MLS must pay top prices. Part of the funds will come from new eight-year broadcasting deals by MLS and the U.S. Soccer Federation with ESPN, Fox and Univision that start next season and will average more than $90 million annually.

MLS says sponsorship revenue has nearly doubled since 2010 for the league and its marketing arm, Soccer United Marketing. Among the corporate partners investing in soccer are Adidas, Allstate, AT&T, General Motors’ Chevrolet division and Continental Tire.

Houston and up to Toronto, general sports fans watched their local MLS players along with the die-hards during the World Cup. Now, MLS’ tallest task is to get those same supporters — and more — to attend league games each weekend. MLS was much more central to this year’s tournament, sending 22 players for an increase from six in 2010.

“Any time there’s a World Cup it’s going to put a focus on soccer for this country, and if there are guys playing in MLS it can only help boost the sport in general and also our league,” said Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman, who started three games in Brazil.

People now in decision-making positions got there in the era after the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., which drew a record 3.6 million fans. They’ve viewed shifts in the taste of American sports fans and the population as a whole, where there has been a growing Hispanic population.

In addition to 16.5 million who watched the United States’ World Cup loss to Belgium on ESPN, there were 5.1 million tuned in on Spanish-language Univision. The 24.7 million total watching the U.S. draw against Portugal topped the averages of the most recent World Series and NBA Finals.

“We have been dealing with a generation of soccer moms and a massive youth participation,” Garber said. “They now have gone through a generational turn. They are now influencers.

They grew up with the game. It’s certainly not foreign to them.

They care about it in ways that their parents did not and now they are becoming MLS fans and becoming soccer fans overall.”

But only a fraction of the people watching the World Cup have tuned into MLS. ESPN2’s regular-season average dropped from 259,000 in 2012 to 206,000 last year, the first season after Beckham’s departure.

It rebounded to 251,000 this year, and the league hopes having regular time slots as part of the new contracts will provide a boost.

Marc Ganis, president of Chicago-based consulting firm SportsCorp, says the league should be happy with steady if not spectacular growth.

“Major League Soccer is still not a top American sport but it has elevated itself dramatically over the last four, five years. But it is still a

select market, relative niche sport and likely will be for the foreseeable future, and that has to do with the predisposition of the American market more than anything else,” Ganis said. “There is really nothing MLS can do to change that. They can enhance their position as they have, but it will not likely be viewed as one of the great American sports in our lifetimes or the next for a variety of reasons that cannot be changed simply by better management.”

U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, already signed through the 2018 World Cup, would like to see a longer MLS season. That will help players develop stamina to compete at World Cups with stars from big clubs that have 60 games or more per year in leagues, cups and European competitions.

“Every year there’s another step forward, another step forward,” Klinsmann said. “The league is growing, not only in the infrastructure side, the financial side, but on the level of play side.”

world’s top club competition. He didn’t seem to be 100 percent in favor of deals that brought Dempsey to Seattle last August and Bradley to Toronto this past winter.

Yet those deals would never have even been contemplated by the league five years ago.

MLS player compensation totaled $42 million in 2007 and has risen to $115 million this year, according to salaries released by the MLS Players Union and analyzed by The Associated Press. The average grew from $113,800 to $208,100.

Dempsey has $6,695,000 in guaranteed compensation with Seattle and Bradley $6.5 million with Toronto. But the median — the figure where an equal number of players are above and below — is just under $92,000. The minimum salaries of $48,500 (for the first 24 players on each roster) and $36,500 (for the final five) figure to be a point of contention in negotiations to replace the collective bargaining agreement that expires after this season.

Having more top players and even middle-roster grinders should increase the level of play

and the buzz.

“It’s a huge thing. It just shows where this league is at right now, the progress, the quality of play,” San Jose Earthquakes coach Mark Watson said. “We want the best players to play here. There’s always going to be the lure of the big clubs in Europe that will always be there, but we want our best players playing here. To have them back, to add to the quality of the league, to see MLS players in the World Cup, it’s something that we’re really happy about.”

The Earthquakes are building a soccer-specific stadium, scheduled to open in 2015. So is Orlando City, which joins the league next along with New York City FC as MLS reaches 21 teams. That will increase the league’s soccer-specific venues to 15.

Teams have thrived in the smaller, 18,000-to-27,000-seat arenas, where the color and noise of supporters stands out, much as it does in larger arenas in Europe and South America.

Curanderismo classes teach students NM’s roots

Nervous excitement fills the air as 200 people gather to watch the Curandera demonstrate laugh therapy.

A woman is called on as a volunteer, but there’s one problem — she hasn’t been able to laugh for 10 years.

Tonita Gonzalez, owner of Tonantzín Traditional Healing, was diagnosed a decade ago with Bell’s Palsey and Trigeminal Neuralgia, which causes paralysis on one side of the face and pain originating from the face.

“It was at that moment that I realized how much my emotional state of being affected my health,” Gonzales said. “(The Curandera) said, ‘You can’t smile, not because of the paralysis of your face, (but) because of the pain in your soul.’”

That is the power of Curanderismo, Eliseo “Cheo” Torres said.

Torres, vice president of student affairs at UNM, teaches the Curanderismo class on campus, which revives the art of traditional medicine, he said.

Healers from North and South America come to speak to the Curanderismo class. This year’s speakers come from Peru, New York, Texas, Mexico and Missouri, he said.

Curanderismo is a practical art with many daily uses, he said. For minor aches and pains, certain plants help: stomach aches can be cured with spinach and clove; aniseed helps with a toothache; for insomnia or headaches, chamomile and orange blossom tea can help, he said.

“It’s a class that has gained a lot of popularity within the last 14 years,” Torres said. “So much, that we have two additional online courses because of the demand.”

Summer Little, director of the Women’s Resource Center at UNM, said she helps organize transportation for the visiting healers and plans the health fairs associated with the class because it’s a valuable part of New Mexico’s roots.

your own health,” she said.

Little said she has been involved in the Curanderismo class for three years, and even enrolled in the class herself in 2012.

“You know, just learning about plants that are readily available and what they can do for you — like sage, lavender and all kinds of different teas — I thought it was really interesting and really valuable,” Little said.

The class is cross-listed with six different departments including Latin American

studies, Spanish, Portuguese, anthropology, language literacy, sociocultural studies and women’s studies.

The class is intended to be inclusive to allow students to take credit in their various departments, Torres said.

Curanderismo is traditional medicine practiced by many throughout Central and South America. It is a holistic approach to healing that includes mind, body and spirit, he said.

The class, Traditional Medicine without Borders: Curanderismo in the Southwest and Mexico, is being offered this summer between July 14-25. The class is also offered online during the fall and spring semesters and as a non-credit massive open online course.
