Dorm life offers new perspectives

By Marielle Dent College freshmen have many big decisions to make, but one of the hardest is whether to live on or off campus.

Living in a dorm has been linked to benefits such as better grades, a greater sense of community and more access to resources, said Wayne Sullivan, director of UNM Residence Life and Student Housing. According to data compiled by UNM Enrollment Management from 2006 to 2010, overall freshman GPA improved by .08 among those who lived in a dorm.

Sophomore students showed improvements of .28 points, the data revealed.

However, that does not mean that oncampus housing is for everyone.

UNM Housing offers three types of residence hall living – traditional halls, suites and apartments – that have similar amenities, but are based on different concepts, according to their website.

“The residence halls are more than just a place to sleep and study,” Sullivan said. “Through an active, engaged residence life program, they are an extension of the educational process and enhance a student’s opportunity to succeed through the efforts of the residence life staff, the programs and activities they provide and the link they provide to the rest of the University.”

Larriane Tan, a sophomore nursing major, said she had a mostly positive experience this academic year living in Alvarado, a traditional hall. She moved out of the first room she was assigned to because of difficulties with establishing boundaries with her roommate.

“After I moved out, my new roommate was a Brazilian foreign exchange student and she is amazing,” Tan said. “She introduced me to the foreign exchange world

Between the University’s official housing and its private-partner housing, more than 3,000 students choose to live on UNM campus each year, according to its website.

UNM’s private partner housing complexes, Casas del Rio and Lobo Village, are owned by American Campus Communities, the nation’s largest developer and owner of student housing communities, according to ACC’s website. Students living on those properties sign a lease directly with ACC rather than with UNM. “Some advice I would give is that you should come into living on-campus with an open mind,” Tan said. “Try to make friends with your roommate, and if you have a problem, talk to them. Don’t be afraid to speak up; it’s your living space, too. Also, make friends … Just be positive

and don’t be afraid to say hi to the people around you.”

Jordan Grow, a sophomore premedical biology major, said the Student Residence Center is good for people who like having their own space. The SRCs are made up of single-occupancy bedrooms grouped around a common living and dining area.

“If you’re moving in with people you know, make sure you know how clean they are,” Grow said. “Also, be very straightforward to your roommates in terms of keeping it clean … the SRCs are great, but communication is a huge part of it as well.”

Learning spaces cater to students’ study habits

Officials at the University Libraries said that due to completion of renovation work in the four libraries on campus, incoming freshmen will have access to features that have been added recently.

The main focus of expansion and renovation efforts over the last year has been Zimmerman library, which now has more space and facilities, according to University officials.

“We are really pleased to welcome new students to the University of New Mexico, and we have a lot of services and resources that our new students would find helpful,” said Cindy Pierard, director of Access Services and Undergraduate Engagement for University Libraries.

She said new learning space was also added to Zimmerman library last year, in an effort to accommodate students’ study habits.

“The new learning space is meant to be a really flexible and comfortable place where students can come to get help if they are researching a paper, to use technology and to work on projects and papers,” Pierard said.

The collections of books, journals and other research materials in Zimmerman include humanities and social studies, as well as areas like history, English, psychology,

sociology and journalism.

“Last year we reached 3 million volumes between four libraries on campus. We have over one million of them in Zimmerman,” said Jason Shoup, senior operations manager at University Libraries. “Between our print and our electronic journals, I assume we have access to over 100,000 titles.”

The other three libraries on campus are the Centennial Science and Engineering Library, which has material in science, technology, engineering and math fields; the Parish Memorial Library, which includes Business and Economics; and the Fine Arts and Design Library, which serves the students and faculty in the arts colleges, according to officials.

“Most books check out for a set period of time based on which type of student you are,” Shoup said. “As an incoming freshman you can (check out) a book for up to four weeks, and then renew it three times as long as no one else is waiting for that book.”

However, he said there are specific books that belong to certain collections and may be more restricted.

“If it is a rare book or it is really difficult to get a hold of, that can be issued for just a couple of days,” he said.

UNMPD: Campus is safe, but stay alert

By Matthew Reisen Freshman year can be an exciting time for many students at UNM. They are given the opportunity to meet new people while also taking on more responsibility as adults in the community.

Some students will be moving out of their parents’ homes and into dorms on campus, or into a home or apartment just off campus.

For those who are going through this transition, there is a caution that comes along with that new-found freedom and excitement.

New students should always be aware of their surroundings as they enter a new environment, and be vigilant to the possible dangers of that environment.

In the 2015 spring semester there were at least 100 criminal

incidents on UNM campus, according to the UNM Police Department Daily Crime Log Report found on the UNMPD website. These crimes ranged from larceny and auto burglary to robbery and aggravated assault.

Although the map shows separate incident locations, there is no discernible area of centralized crime on campus for new students to watch out for, according to UNMPD’s Lt. Timothy Stump “We believe campus is a safe place; we do not have designated safe and unsafe places,” he said. “We don’t have statistics that show one place is safer than the other.”

Stump said the most prevalent crime on campus is theft – particularly bicycle and auto theft. Stump said that although a full statistical report on crime is not yet available

Students should know to always be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to avoid it when possible. UNM is a university, but it is also a community, and just like any community, community members should be aware of their surroundings and look out for one another.

Stump said new students should get to know the “blue-phone” locations – these are alert posts located around campus that are lit and operate 24 hours a day. Each “blue phone” has a large button that, when pressed, alerts UNMPD to your location for immediate assistance.

Even though there are many of these emergency posts across campus, familiarizing oneself with their locations can help at a crucial time

and can inform students of where to travel when traversing the grounds.

Stump also advised students not to travel alone at night when possible, and if they must do so, to try to always stay in groups of two or more.

He urges students to put UNMPD’s number, 277-2241, in their phone contacts and even on speed dial.

New students are also encouraged to download and utilize the Rave Lobo Guardian app on their phones, he said. The app allows anyone to immediately contact UNM Police Department to increase the safety of students, staff and faculty on campus.

The LoboGuardian app is “a customized version of Rave Guardian, a campus safety application produced

by Rave Mobile Safety that is being used by more than 100 universities throughout the United States,” said

Dean of Students Tomas Aguirre.

Aguirre said the app was purchased by the Office of the President, and is free to use for UNM students, staff and faculty.

Stump had some words of advice for new students at UNM concerning the public nature of a university campus.

“You’re no longer at home, secure your dorm rooms (and) belongings,” he said. “When in public areas of campus, do not leave your belongings unattended. Register your bikes right away. UNMPD is located at 2500 Campus in the basement of Hokona Hall. Come by and say hello.”

Involvement with ASUNM has many faces

The Associated Students of UNM, commonly referred to as ASUNM, is the undergraduate student governing body at the University of New Mexico, representing more than 20,000 undergraduate students.

ASUNM answers to the UNM Board of Regents and is made up

of the executive, legislative and judicial branches. They act in the students’ best interests in various ways, including writing resolutions that express the opinion of the senate on certain issues and deciding which student organizations’ requests for funding are fulfilled.

It is also composed of three committees run by ASUNM senators: Finance, Outreach and Appoint-

ments, and Steering and Rules.

David Ishmael, ASUNM director of communications for the 2014-2015 school year, said ASUNM has all the makings of a legitimate governing entity that looks out for its constituents.

“It really is a living, breathing, functional government right here on campus,” Ishmael said.

Students don’t have to be politically minded or elected to be a part

of ASUNM. There are also various agencies responsible for putting on a multitude of activities, from the spring Fiestas music festival to programs designed to prepare students to serve in ASUNM. Rachel Williams, ASUNM president for the 2014-2015 year, said in the governing body’s first e-magazine, which was released in January, that being involved in ASUNM

is one way that students can maximize their college experiences.

“You are all empowered to take the reins and to drive your college experience,” Williams said, “ … allow ASUNM to be along for the ride.”

ASUNM is always willing to talk to students about issues that concern them. Each senator has office hours that can be found on ASUNM’s website, and students are welcome to come speak with them at their office on the basement level of the SUB. The governing body also has its own e-magazine that goes out by e-mail to all undergraduates once a month. You can also follow them on Facebook or Twitter at @asunmlobos, or email them at asunm@unm.edu In addition, ASUNM meetings are open to the public. Senate meetings, where new pieces of legislation and appropriations are discussed and voted on, are every other Wednesday during the semester at 6:00 p.m. in the Lobo A and B rooms on the top floor of the SUB. Committee meetings are held on subsequent Wednesdays. A meeting schedule can be found online at asunm.unm.edu.

Emerging Lobo Leaders is as ASUNM program designed to prepare students for future involvement with ASUNM in a larger role. Students learn the inner workings of ASUNM as well as build connections with current senators and other members of the governing body.

There is an application process for students interested in Emerging Lobo Leaders. Anyone interested is invited to contact ell@unm.edu for more information.

Students are also invited to work in one of ASUNM’s other seven agencies in various roles. ASUNM Branches and Responsibilities Executive President – Leads the executive branch, oversees ASUNM agencies, sits on Student Fee Review Board, works closely with University regents to advocate for student interests, sits on various University committees and boards. Candidates are elected to this position during the spring.

Chief of Staff – Assists the president with internal tasks, prepares agendas for meetings, attends University meetings in place of the president when necessary. This is an appointed position.

Attorney General – Provides advice concerning ASUNM law and protocol, serves as non-voting member of the Senate and its committees. This is an appointed position.

Director of Communications – Responsible for maintaining ASUNM social media accounts, assists with public relations and advertising, acts as liaison for communications.

This is an appointed position.

Legislative Vice President – Leads ASUNM Senate meetings, responsible for senate functions and senator accountability, appoints interim senators in the event of a vacant seat. This is an elected position.

Senator – Represents student organizations, sits on one of three ASUNM committees, hosts office hours to talk to students and work on initiatives. There are 20 ASUNM senators, 10 of whom are elected each semester.

Judicial A student court composed of a chief justice appointed by the president, and four associate justices appointed by the chief justice. Handles ASUNM-related complaints by students.

ASUNM Agencies Arts and Crafts Studio The Arts and Crafts Studio is a space for UNM students to work on personal ceramics and jewelry projects, providing the necessary equipment and workshops for a low cost.

Governmental Affairs Members of this agency lobby on behalf of UNM students to New Mexico’s legislators, as well as other government bodies outside of UNM. Government affairs organizes UNM Day each spring, on which students and ASUNM leaders travel to the state legislative session to talk with politicians about issues affecting them.

Departments provide specialized tutoring

UNM offers a variety of studying resources for students, one of the more popular being the Center for Academic Program Support in Zimmerman Library.

There are, other resources offered across campus as well as online for students who need homework help. These options include tutoring for engineering students; tutoring tables for algebra, calculus and statistics; and the social media website for students, StudyRoom.

According to the School of Engineering website, tutoring services are provided for all levels of math, as well as in every field of engineering, by “senior-level peers” in the Centennial Engineering Center, provided by the Engineering Student Services office. Help with math can also be found at the tutoring tables on the third floor of Dane Smith Hall.

Nina Greenberg, a senior faculty lecturer and statistics coordinator, said all of the tutors at the tables in DSH are instructors in their respective subjects. Their work at the tables is part of their required office hours, and is provided by the Mathematics and Statistics

Department Services, she said.

“These tables are a convenient place for students to get help from either their own instructors or other instructors at many times and many days of the week,” Greenberg said.

The tables differ from CAPS in that CAPS offers peer tutoring, while the math tables in DSH are tutoring offered from instructors that do not require appointments, Greenberg said Jurg Bolli, director of calculus in the Mathematics and Statistics Department and a tutor at the calculus table, said another convenience is the tables’ location: the building in which these classes are held.

“Many students are at Dane Smith Hall during the day, and the calculus and statistics tables are right there,” Bolli said.

Another resource that can be utilized by students who need help in subjects outside of math is StudyRoom. It is a free website that only college students have access to.

It’s a medium for students to share notes, ask questions to classmates and organize study groups with people taking the same courses.

riety of methods like the Snapsolve app, which allows students to take a picture of their homework and post it as a question, as well as online tutoring sessions via video.

StudyRoom CEO Emerson Malca said the site was created to promote the social aspect of education, which is a fundamental aspect of learning.

“I really believe in the power of peer-to-peer learning,” he said.

“Students are well prepared to ex-

plain the problems for other students because they just did them themselves. Now they get the opportunity to actually learn. There is nothing more powerful than teaching something to actually learn it.”

While there are currently fees for tutoring sessions and posting official questions on the site, Malca said the StudyRoom team is working hard to make it free for students in the future while still

paying the tutors.

Many departments also offer tutoring services for students within the department majors. Interested students can ask their department heads about these services.

Whether a student needs to print an essay or a shoulder to cry on, Mesa Vista Hall is a central location where they can access a variety of services tailored to people from a variety of backgrounds.

The resource centers within Mesa Vista Hall offer facilities such as computer labs, free printing, faxing and copying. There is also counseling, academic advisement, mentorship scholarships and opportunities to get involved to build social and leadership skills.

African American Student Services Jamila Clayton, a recruiter and academic advisor at African American Student Services, said she works with students one-on-one to provide support and guidance to promote a successful college experience.

The purpose of African American Student Services is to support students by providing resources such as holistic academic support, academic workshops, tutoring, leadership skill-building through student organizations and several

cultural events, she said.

Among the events they present is the Welcome Back Barbeque in the beginning of the fall semester, which encourages freshmen to socialize with other African Americans in the community as well as other students on campus, Clayton said.

“It’s important for freshmen especially to utilize the services because we’re going to make sure that you navigate your first year successfully at UNM,” Clayton said.

“We’re here to support you if you have any issues with your instructors, and just making sure that you’re on the right track toward graduation and taking the right classes. We’re like your main support system as an African American student.”

Daniel Begay is a student program advisor at American Indian Student Services who oversees the mentorship program, which he said he encourages freshmen to get involved in.

Begay said the purpose of American Indian Student Services is to support students through their academic endeavors by providing a variety of

rooms to make it easier for students to bring their own laptops and hook them up to the monitors or to check out a wireless keyboard from us so that they could work on their presentations,” Pierard said.

Students can also utilize many services offered by the libraries online, she said.

“If students need to reserve one of our study rooms, they can do that

online through our website,” she said.

“We have a service called Ask a Librarian – it is something that we push really heavily. If you have any questions about anything at all, please call us or text us and we will be happy to help you out.”

Three of the four libraries now also have water bottle refill stations, she said.

The mentorship program allows freshmen to establish a personal network with upperclassmen to make their college experience memorable, he said.

The program consists of academic enrichment, professional development and social events students can attend to earn points. Students who earn the most points will be eligible for a scholarship at the end of the academic year.

American Indian Student Services also presents a Welcome Back Social during the first week of fall semester for freshmen to socialize and introduce themselves to the department and other students.

“Students have come here because they’ve felt a little frustrated or just unsure where to go at times,” Begay said. “Sometimes they just come in here by chance, and we’re happy to help them because we do have that ability to help answer all of their questions. If we can’t answer the question personally, we do know where we can direct them.”

Among a variety of resources, the Women’s Resource Center offers a new mentorship program geared toward freshmen. Henke said it’s a way for first-year students to partner with upper-level students for oneon-one mentoring in an effort to enhance their skills throughout the academic year.

“Coming to college for many people is a really huge transition. You get onto this campus and it’s so big and the culture is so different. It can be really overwhelming,” Henke said. “If you just have one place to start that you can go into, ask questions, find support and ask people who have been through the same experience and just find a place that’s comfortable, you’re probably more prone to be successful … than if you’re just trying to go at it and navigate alone.”

Recent past and near future of Lobo sports Staff Report

Lobo football’s head coach Bob Davie and his team are looking to earn their first bowl bid since the 2007 season.

For basketball head coach Craig Neal, the Lobo men’s team is coming off one of the worst seasons in recent memory and has to rebound quickly in order to quiet a rabid fan base.

In order to understand the key issues surrounding both teams, Daily Lobo sports editor Thomas Romero-Salas and assistant sports editor Liam Cary-Eaves discussed the coming season for the Lobos.

Can Lobo football take the next step?

LCE: Since Mike Locksley’s departure in 2011, the team has shown definite signs of turning the program around.

Although UNM’s defense is still a key concern, I think that the addition of new cornerbacks coach Al Simmons will be a definite upgrade, along with the Lobos’ new nickel package. With a defensive improvement against spread offenses, New Mexico has a real shot at being bowl-eligible.

TRS: That’s the key question about the Lobos: I don’t know whether or not their defense will be able to make the leap, and at least be decent enough for them

to win games. I do know their offense will be better with either Lamar Jordan or Austin Apodaca running the show at quarterback.

However, if their defense doesn’t improve it will all be for naught.

LCE: Having Jordan behind center will provide an identity for this team. After making the switch from Cole Gautsche to Jordan, there was a little more spark in the triple-option. Not only will the Lobos be dominant on the ground, as they have been for some time, but they have the additional threat of the deep pass. I agree that the defense will need to improve in order to help this team take the next step, but by no means will they have to be perfect with a quarterback leading the helm who can both throw and run.

TRS: If UNM’s defense becomes average, the coaching staff will take it. Like you said, the next step at quarterback is the other big questions surrounding this team. Gone are the days where UNM throws fewer than 10 passes a game: the Lobos will throw the ball more, but how often is still up for debate. Regardless, the team has nowhere to go but up after ranking 123rd in passing offense last season.

LCE: I’m sure UNM’s run-happy offense was not appealing to the majority of its fan base, like you said.

However, I don’t foresee the Lobos

abandoning their foundation of running the ball first. That is, of course, the identity of this team, and will be for some time to come.

It’s going to be interesting to see where this offense goes. Labeling a starting quarterback right away and sticking to it is one of the things I will be looking for Davie to do. After a solid performance his freshman year, Jordan has to have an edge over Apodaca.

TRS: I think that Jordan does have the inside track to the starting job, but don’t sleep on Apodaca. The junior college transfer is still getting used to the triple-option offense, but did make several nice plays during spring ball. Apodaca doesn’t have the nimblest of feet, but can make do with running the football.

However, Davie said watch out for redshirt freshman JaJuan Lawson, who has the potential to overcome both Jordan and Apodaca for the quarterback position.

LCE: UNM will go 7-5 in its first winning season since 2007 with Jordan garnering the reins.

TRS: The Lobos will go 6-6 and earn a bowl spot – most likely in the New Mexico Bowl.

Can men’s basketball make a comeback?

LCE: Thomas, this is one of the most disappointing New Mexico basketball teams in recent memory.

TRS: Last year was tough, to say the least. Injuries are what really killed the team early in the season, and the Lobos just didn’t have the depth to survive them.

Yes, they played about 10 players on average, but most of them were newcomers to the program.

Guards Hugh Greenwood – a cornerstone on UNM’s Mountain West champion teams – and DeShawn Delaney were the only seniors on a squad that needed more veterans. Head coach Craig Neal is known as an offensive guru around the county, but his team struggled to form anything coherent on the offensive end, managing just 62 points per game.

LCE: I have major concerns with this team. Yes, injuries will haunt any club, but closing games out was more of a surprise to me. Having UNM’s leading scorer, Cullen Neal, sitting on the bench for almost the entire season didn’t help the Lobos’ cause

by any means. However, there were multiple occasions where New Mexico was in a position to stop their losing streak, but would slide into a scoring drought late in the game. This is with the identity of the club, Greenwood, bringing the ball up the court.

Where will the Lobos be without any of their known leaders?

TRS: Trying to replace Greenwood will be tough, but UNM will have some major additions this upcoming season.

Unfortunately, the Lobos will be without junior college transfer Jordan Goodman, who said he was leaving UNM last month. However, the sharp-shooting Elijah Brown and forward Tim Williams will be eligible to play this upcoming season after transferring to the Lobos last year. Guard Cullen Neal will be back from his ankle injury and will only help the offense. All of the players who were thrown to the wolves this past year will only get better from that playing time.

I see some cause for concern, but the Lobos are just stockpiling talent and should be fine.

LCE: That is one of the most puzzling moves I have seen: Goodman leaving the Lobos just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Not only will the junior college

transfer student have to wait another year before playing in his last year of eligibility. I do like the additions of Brown and Williams to add some shooting to this squad which desperately needed a scorer, especially late in games. Neal said in the season-ending presser that the club needed to address its scoring issues, which I think New Mexico has done. The Lobos can shoot lights out, but they are going to need Obij Aget to toughen up down low. I was looking for the junior seven-footer to have a breakout year, but he still has a ways to go.

TRS: I think Craig Neal will bounce back after a dismal sophomore year. The Lobos will go 24-6 and claim second place in the Mountain West.

LCE: Neal will continue to struggle, but the Lobos will show signs of improvement from an abysmal 2014-2015 campaign.

The Lobos will finish fourth in the MW with a 19-11 record.

Finding friends via clubs improves experience

College is where the party is at when it comes to student-run clubs and organizations. Students can join clubs like the Doctor Who fan club, Pokémon club, Yuh-Gu-Oh! club, and even the Tea Enthusiast club.

Debbie Morris, Student Activities Center director, said there are more than 450 clubs and organizations offered on campus.

“Clubs are a way for students that have a particular interest to join with other students and find their niche,” she said.

Morris said students are able to start clubs and make connections with other interested individuals.

“Sometimes you come to this campus and you don’t know any-

one, and that can be a little intimidating,” she said.

Clubs are not only a way for students to make friends, she said, but also a way to gain experience that would be useful in the future.

“Students gain experience with communication, decision making, event planning and a variety (of ways) to handle conflict,” she said.

Morris said students gain useful skills in the job market: whether the club is Honor Society, the Doctor Who fan club or Anime Club, students must organize meetings, budgets, and host events like any other academicsbased club.

“You learn a whole bunch of skills that you can talk about in the

interview with realistic explanations,” she said.

Stephanie Everett, who worked as the Graduate and Professional Student Association office manager last school year, said there are student-run organizations like GPSA and the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico that try and advocate for students.

“We push to see that students are being served at the University,” Everett said. “We work with faculty to make sure that every student is (a) priority.”

She said that the focus is to provide a home base and give students a place to belong.

“You need to have somebody to relate to,” she said. “You need somebody to help you find your way and provide support.”

Students are able to create clubs and find people that share their departments, home countries or interests, she said.

“When you feel like you belong somewhere, you try a little bit harder to succeed,” Everett said.

Drew Morrow, a sophomore art studio major and Kappa Kappa PSI member, said clubs are groups of like-minded people working together to achieve a collective goal or an idea.

“I enjoy the sense of combined friendship and purpose,” he said.

Feeling a part of something greater than himself is important for others around him and the community, Morrow said.

“There’s a sense of purpose in that when I do something I can have the reassurance that tomorrow, or

ten years from now, I can know I’ve made a difference,” he said.

He said being a part of a club or group helps him feel connected to others and able to reach out.

Valentine Fisher, a graduate student majoring in community and regional planning, said that as incoming freshmen students can feel overwhelmed, and being a part of a community can be valuable for that experience.

“Get involved early,” Fisher said.

“There are so many great clubs on campus that (give) you the opportunity to enrich your academic life, and you need that balance.”

Intramural sports’ popularity unprecedented Recreation Services in Johnson Center offer several activities that promote fitness, camaraderie

By Robert Maler Participating in activities outside of the classroom is an excellent way to meet new people and enhance the college experience.

One place to find such activities is Johnson Center, home to UNM’s Recreational Services. Although intramural programs will not resume until the fall semester, there is a variety of other programs in which students can participate.

James Todd, director for Recreational Services, said intramural programs have become popular

lately, so it is important to register for the leagues as early as possible.

“We have to cap our league at a certain number of teams,” Todd said. “For indoor soccer, we have actually had to turn teams away.”

There are several other services offered at Johnson Center, including fitness courses such as pilates, yoga and zumba, he said. In addition, “Getaway Adventures” gives students the opportunity to see New Mexico while hiking, camping, fishing, rafting, kayaking or rock climbing.

Shops also provide students

the chance to rent camping and recreational equipment or tune up their bicycles.

“If students engage in activities in addition to classes, studies have shown that their retention rate is much higher,” Todd said.

Higher grade point averages, physical and mental health benefits and social interaction are some of the positive impacts students can expect to take away from these programs, Todd said.

Lisa Romero, a Recreational Services coordinator, said course and team practice schedules will

have to be set before the intramural schedule can be made. The schedule should be released prior to August, she said.

Basketball, soccer, dodgeball, flag football and volleyball are among the activities to be offered.

Duan Johnson, a senior psychology major, said he participated in basketball, football, dodgeball and softball. He enjoyed meeting new people the most, he said.

“I met a lot of people my freshman year, and we’re still friends,” he said. “It’s what you make of it; if you go in expecting to have fun, you will.”

Abdulai Mansaray, a senior business administration major, is also a participant and employee in the intramural program. He said he played basketball and football, and is also a gym attendant and referee.

Mansaray said the program has helped him build a network of relationships and he enjoys the camaraderie of playing sports with his peers.
