Mom and vet navigates packed schedule

By Johnny Vizcaino Katrina Davidson-Shea, a U.S. Air Force veteran and mother who is expecting her fourth child in October, will graduate with a degree in English and history and a sterling 4.0 GPA this week.

Davidson-Shea said after originally deciding to minor in history, the decision to pursue a double major seemed practical since it would require the same amount of work.

“I took English originally because I wanted to specialize in technical writing. (Labs, corporations) always need writers for their documents,” she said, citing local job listings she took note of recently. “But I didn’t have time to apply because I’m (expecting), so I figured I would take a year off, and then start slowly doing part-time work, maybe an internship, and then work my way into a full-time position.”

Though balancing two fields of study is no easy chore, it is slight

work when compared to the task of caring for three young children.

She said proper scheduling has been a fundamental element to her family’s success.

“Not necessarily scheduling the kids, but scheduling the school work around them. There’s a lot of lists,” she said. “I had to look at when I could drop the kids off, when I could pick them up, but I also had to look at which classes fit into my degree as well, so there was a lot of stuff to look at.”

Her oldest child, 9-year-old Cara, does well in school and “understands that mommy has to (study) now, but she knows on the weekend there’s always time for us to do stuff together,” DavidsonShea said.

Reuben, the middle child, is five. Her youngest, Gabriel, will turn two in June.

Davidson-Shea began her college career at CNM in 2012, when Reuben was 1, she said. Her family had just been stationed locally after being stationed in Turkey.

She said she came close to getting her degree from the Community College of the Air Force, but never finished it.

“I applied to UNM but I didn’t have all of my records, so my husband told me ‘just go to CNM, get your associate’s, and then you can hop right over,’” she said. “So I did that.”

Since that time in 2012, Davidson-Shea said she has attended college every semester except for the summer of 2014, when she gave birth to Gabriel. Her husband is still active in the military.

This accomplishment required hard work, discipline and, most of all, self-sacrifice, she said.

“For me it was good because I wasn’t a very good student in high school. I would put off a lot of work, but now I’m a lot more focused,” she said. “I think the Air Force had a lot to do with that, with the discipline, how I can stay focused on the task and get everything done on time.”

“It was weird this semester not signing up for classes, because it’s like ‘You can sign up now,’ but I don’t have to, I have nothing left,”

she said. “It will be nice to get some time off.”

Ex-Marine overcomes adversity to graduate

As a first generation college student and the daughter of two factory workers, Taren Smith-Townsend initially struggled to balance the responsibilities of being a single mother and finishing her degree.

Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, both of Smith-Townsend’s parents worked for General Motors. Her mother has been in and out of her life due to alcoholism, she said, leaving her father to raise her since the age of three.

“My dad has always been my rock, he is my biggest cheerleader, he has always been there for me,” Taren said.

She said her father’s consistent love and support played an instru-

mental role in helping her become the woman that she is today.

Smith-Townsend put being a student on hold when she chose to join the Marine Corps.

She served two tours in Iraq, she said, while working as a combat lifesaver and a truck driver for the Marines during her deployment. After her first tour, Smith-Townsend gave birth to her daughter.

Once her second tour was over, Smith-Townsend moved to Albuquerque and joined the New Mexico Army National Guard to continue her schooling at the University of New Mexico.

Her decision to become a pharmacist was influenced by her experiences in the military. Smith-Townsend said her time as an active duty soldier

The challenges of simultaneously being a single parent and going back to school can be daunting for anyone.

But Smith-Townsend was able to finish her undergraduate studies in only three years.

Now, she is just days away from graduating with a doctorate from the College of Pharmacy.

Smith-Townsend didn’t just practice her studies in the classroom. As an undergrad, she was the president of the UNM Pre-Pharmacy Society, and later served as vice president of the Health and Sciences Student Council while in the College of Pharmacy.

Student runs own website while attending class

By Denica Aragon A UNM student set to graduate this semester is already living out his dream by creating and writing for his own website focused on NASCAR. The nationally accredited website, TheRacingExperts.com, is owned and operated by UNM’s own Dominic Aragon, graduating with a degree in mass communication.

Aragon started his journalism career as editor-in-chief for the website he started in 2010. It began as a blog, but has turned into a comprehensive news source accredited by NASCAR and IndyCar. “It’s been neat to be able to start off something that so small and to be accredited by NASCAR and to go to the Daytona 500 to cover NASCAR championship weekend and start working towards being a full-time reporter in the industry,” Aragon said.

Before creating his own website, Aragon applied for a job at another NASCAR website already i existence, but was turned down. That inspired him to create one of his own.

Dominic Aragon works in his dream job running his own site while holding New Mexico’s highest media access for NASCAR.

ate a website, he said, but he had a small team behind him helping him create the website as well as the content for it.

As the website was growing, more time was needed to keep it moving forward, Aragon said. As his work was getting noticed, he turned down multiple job opportunities to allow him to focus on his endeavor.

He credits the growth of TheRacingExperts to the amount of dedication put in during the last six years from him and his co-workers.

A new passion Aragon’s story behind the reason for choosing to report on NASCAR began on Christmas when he was four.

He said he and his brother received a PlayStation that year, along with five games to go along with it.

One of those five games turned out to be NASCAR 99, which sparked his interest in racing. While playing the game, he said he learned about the drivers at the time and tracks they raced on.

He attended his first race in 2002, and by 2004 was engaged as a fan full-time.

“There was something interesting about that video game that caught my attention, so I often do wonder if I would have never gotten that video game what would have happened,” he said.

Before starting his website, Aragon said he started his journalism career with a local television station working with Grants High Athletics reporting on sports and interviewing coaches.

Through that opportunity, Aragon requested to interview NASCAR drivers, with the school approving the request and paying for him to travel and report on races for the website of the school newspaper.

Improvements have been planned for the look and format of

TheRacingExpert’s website. Aragon said he is working with web designers to change the structure so that editors can post articles and other content quickly and easily.

He said right now it takes double the amount of time to upload a story than it does to write it, and most of the improvements being planned are going towards improving the website.

But Aragon doesn’t see it as work, not when he’s able to focus on his passion day in and day out.

Sometimes that means staying up at two in the morning, he said, waiting for races to finish so he can write about it.

“I’m getting to live my dream, and I’m still in school,” Aragon said. “You have to be willing to put in the hours. If I have any advice it would be to look for the specific angle look for those specific stories others aren’t covering. That is what will get you noticed.”

LETTERS Seal is irrelevant, UNM is no longer about education Editor, If UNM were still a public education institution, a new seal might reflect some of those values, not colonization and racism as it does now. But UNM is no longer a public educational place. Over the past two decades, it has been transformed into a private sector corporate and government military war research center, saying this research was done for the enrichment of students for the job market. And don’t forget the entertainment mafia of the “sports” industry having a big role in the school.

Yes, there is big money to be made in war profiteering and sports entertainment. A new seal should reflect that and not promote the myth of it being a public school any longer or that it belongs to the several demographic groups in New Mexico. This is long gone.

A more accurate seal might show a big dollar sign and a mushroom cloud, or a laser weapon beam from space with the corporate logo of a firm like Lockheed Martin or Northrop Grumman and a Reaper killer drone above, for instance.

Given that President Frank and the regents are hosting a global symposium here next month on how to sell to the public the use of custom-tailored nuclear weapons in pursuit of our nation’s global empire it might make sense to change the name of UNM to University of Nuclear Madness along with a new seal. Abolishing racist seal a step toward fixing power dynamics Editor, Nobody took us seriously when we held the Abolish Columbus Day march in fall of 2014. But then we got a resolution passed in spring of 2015 through ASUNM calling for the celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day of Resistance and Resilience, and yet we did not see any action from any UNM Admins or Regents.

And then we held a march and rally with over 1,300 people in downtown Albuquerque, again calling for Columbus Day to be abolished, and this time our efforts paid off as now the City of Albuquerque officially celebrates Indigenous People’s Day. We are living in an era where millions of

Protests over seal prove that it is not serving its purpose Obviously, the UNM seal has to go. The seal is supposed to be an anodyne bit of branding, totally inoffensive and a brief, pleasant reminder of our fine University.

It doesn’t matter if the protesters are right about it being offensive. The fact that people

are protesting it means it isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do.

That said, I’ll be sorry to lose the seal. I always thought it was a useful reminder of New Mexico’s history. I’d be going about my day, see it somewhere, and think “Oh, right. This university, state and country were all carved out by rapists and murderers on land they stole from Native Americans. That conquistador probably enslaved a people, and that settler probably thought Native Americans were subhuman monsters. Man, the past is

shameful. How can we be better now?”

This, incidentally, is why I think those doctored seals with the pile of bones are so funny. The seal has a conquistador and a settler on it. The pile of bones is already implied.

Still, I’m pretty sure “subtle reminder of past horrors” isn’t what people are looking for in a seal, so again, change it already.

people in the United States are renouncing the excesses of capitalist exploitation and embracing socialism and socialist candidates for President, like Bernie Sanders, a Democrat, or Gloria La Riva with the Party for Socialism and Liberation. And people are not doing this because they are misinformed or uneducated.

People are feeling the pain and agony of corporate greed that is leaving many unemployed, many without access to education and healthcare, and many are ready to build a better and more equitable system that works for all of us and not just the one percent.

The campaign to #AbolishTheRacistSeal has 11 very clear demands and these are tied into broader and larger notions of what justice and liberation look like, and all of us who believe in things like common decency and equality should embrace this campaign.

We should embrace the upholding of treaty rights that ensures education for all

Native Americans, we should embrace the abolition of racist imagery to ensure that all are welcome and we should embrace the growth and development of UNM through initiatives like constructing a new Native Cultural Center, hiring more faculty of color and celebrating Indigenous People’s Day of Resistance and Resilience. These are all initiatives that would place UNM at the forefront of the 21st century instead of in the backwoods of 19th-century colonialism.

Just like we fight to end sexual assault on campus, and we supported the departmentalization of Chicano/a Studies, and we call for divestment from companies that profit from the Zionist occupation of Palestine, and we stood with UNM medical students calling for single payer healthcare, and we have stood with workers calling for $15/hour minimum wage, and we stand with the Black Student Union to ensure that Black students

are heard and supported. We also stand very closely with the Kiva Club and the Red Nation.

I think most people take us seriously now as we continue to struggle to change the whole power structure of the University so that it serves all of us, and it serves the interests of the working class as a whole; white, black, brown, and Native.

As we have stated in the past, all are welcome to join this struggle.

It is never too late to be on the right side of history ... until it is.

From motor racing to an engineering degree

By Robert Maler One UNM student underwent a unique journey to graduation. It started on a race track, switched lanes into the classroom and could end up with a degree that puts him right back on the track again.

Gonzalo Correa-Kemish, a senior mechanical engineering major and motocross enthusiast, said motor sports have always been his passion.

He knew at a young age that a mechanical engineering degree could be the bridge that keeps him close to the thing he loves.

“I started racing motorcycles when I was four years old,” he said.

Correa-Kemish, a native of Peru, said he began to gain a lot of motocross experience, even as a child, and won a junior motocross national championship in Peru at the age of 12, competing in the 65-85 cc division.

He said his parents provided a lot of support, but as his father started making more trips to the United States, it became more difficult to keep up with racing. Even though he could no longer compete, he still wanted to be involved in it.

He said his family moved to New Mexico when he was about 13 years old, and he remembers the family of five managing life in a one-bedroom

apartment for about a year while waiting for their house to be built.

He said his father’s decision to move to the U.S. was a bold one; it had to be difficult to leave behind friends and family, he said.

“We became very close because when we came here, all we had was each other,” he said. “It’s hard to come to a different place and adapt.”

But Correa-Kemish seems to have adapted well. His girlfriend of two years, Kourtnee White, said the future graduate is very outgoing, with a personality that makes it hard for him to be disliked. She said he is probably the funniest person she knows.

Correa-Kemish’s infectious smile never left his face as he seemed to enjoy talking about how tightknit his family is. Even though all three children in Correa-Kemish’s household are adults that have gone their individual paths, White said the family remains very close, reuniting for dinner every week.

“His mom or dad cooks dinner at their house, and everyone goes (there) and eats every Sunday,” she said.

White has also become very close with Correa-Kemish’s sister, Alejandra, who said she and White are almost like sisters. Both are also students at UNM, and they frequently study with each other on campus.

Alejandra Correa-Kemish said she is extremely proud of her brother because things could not have been easy for him. She said her brother took a lot of AP class at Rio Rancho High School that likely helped prepare him, but he knew he had to work hard throughout college as well.

“Graduating is huge and that’s a hard degree that he finished in four years,” Alejandra Correa-Kemish said.

“He always puts 100 percent in everything he does.”

Gonzalo Correa-Kemish said things might not come as easy for him as it does for others, but he believes people get back what they

put in, in terms of effort. He said some of the courses he took were very intense, but he took advantage of after-hours access to maximize his opportunities to study.

“I don’t know how many times I have been here with a group of four or five people through the whole night, studying to be able to do good on the exam,” he said.

He said that with the job market in Peru, he’s not sure engineering would have even been an option for him. Now, as he closes in on his degree, he said he is almost through with designing a car and performing research in order to

While McCutchen’s guidance kept Smith-Townsend on track to achieving her goals, it was reciprocated as McCutchen said she felt inspired by

Smith-Townsend.

“Taren is a great example of perseverance,” McCutchen said. “Over the seven years I have known her, I have watched her overcome personal and academic challenges. Even with big roadblocks, she wouldn’t give up; she would simply find a way around the block.”

“It’s been kind of a blessing in disguise,” Smith-Townsend said. “Because my daughter sees me studying, she sees me working hard and putting in the effort and passing my classes.

I’m glad things have worked out the way they have, because I know she’s going to be better knowing that I did

this, that she saw her mom do this.”

The drive of being able to give her daughter a better and brighter future, and to be a better mom than the one she had growing up, has helped her push forward and achieve new heights no one in her family has ever reached before.

Correa-Kemish said he has already applied for jobs in North Carolina and Florida. He said it is important to be somewhere where his girlfriend can finish her nursing degree and then they can figure things out from there.

The mechanical engineering major said he’s hoping to eventually find work in NASCAR or motocross.

He said his dream job would be working for Formula 1 or MotoGP as those organizations are the pinnacle of the sport.

Correa-Kemish said he thinks a lot of people may be apprehensive about pursuing their passion because they may feel they have to conform, worry about financial issues or other outside influences, but his advice is to chase those dreams anyway.

“I would say a lot of people don’t get to do what they love,” he said. “You might get kicked down a few times along the way, but if you want to do something that you love, don’t settle for anything less than that.”

Tragedy doesn’t stop student from graduating

By Liam Cary-Eaves Maria Mendez tries to remember July 10, 2012 not as the day that her world stopped, but as a marker to keep going.

That’s what her father would have wanted, Mendez said.

“My dad, I don’t know, he was tired ... and that’s when he shot himself,” Mendez said. “It turned my entire family’s lives for a whirlwind. All of us suffered in different ways, but for me it was different because I was so close to him, but I was also so far away.”

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Mendez was the first person in her family to take the plunge and go to college. In August of 2011, she packed up all she would need and made the 12hour drive to Albuquerque.

Initially, Mendez said she wanted to go into medicine because she knew it was a good profession. However, she will graduate with her Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Biology, due to the lack of attention that mental disorders receive.

“That’s why, now, I want to go into mental health. It’s why I’ve done research in resilience and trauma, because my little brother has suffered a lot,” Mendez said.

“One of my brothers actually witnessed my dad passing away ... I just saw the change in him and we couldn’t get him the help that he needed.”

Mendez said her father had been going through hardships after losing his job at Coca-Cola.

The financial instability is something that she said caused tension among her parents, a situation that Mendez said would affect any family.

Her father lost his job right before she shipped off to New Mexico, a place Mendez was not familiar with. She said her dad was proud of her for taking the leap to better herself and chase her dreams, but Mendez also knew the toll that it took on him.

“I was really close with my dad, so leaving was probably really hard for me and him because we were best friends,” Mendez said. “He knew it was a good thing for me.”

That first year, Mendez said she would call to chat with her father to check in, just to see how he was doing. Time between classes, breaks at work, car rides home were normally spent on the phone with her dad.

Tonya Romero first linked up with Mendez at UNM’s freshman orientation. She said the two instantly formed a close-knit bond that would help them both through difficult times.

Romero said that she noticed the change in her close friend, but that Mendez remained driven through enduring her traumatizing experience.

“When her dad passed away, she was a very different person ...

But she’s one person that definitely stayed strong,” Romero said. “She never gave up, she stayed close to her friends and pursued what she wanted to do because she knew her dad would be proud of her.”

“That wasn’t my dad’s first attempt,” Mendez said.

Mendez jumped on a plane for the remainder of the summer, but said she was right back in school in the fall.

“I think Maria didn’t take any time off because she wanted to pursue her dream still and making her dad proud,” Romero said.

“Keeping herself busy helped her.

All of her friends being there ... we really helped push her through, but mainly it was her choice not to give up and I think she just wanted to make her dad proud.”

would graduate on time and said she felt like she was falling behind because she was only allowed 12 credit hours per semester due to the regulations of the consortium agreement she had signed.

Further, the out-of-state tuition was too high, so she did everything she could to make sure she stayed on track to graduate.

So instead of going home for the summer, she decided to stay in New Mexico, work at the UNM Children’s Campus and take summer classes at CNM.

Tragic news Mendez said she had just talked to her father on the way home after her evening class and was working on her math homework in bed. She fell asleep and said when she woke up she felt like something was

wrong but assumed it was because she knew how much work needed to be done.

When Mendez reached out for her phone to contact her dad, it was already ringing.

It was the family neighbor, from back in California.

In a panic, the neighbor ran across the street to get Mendez’s sister. All Mendez wanted to know was whether or not her father was okay, she said. She asked repeatedly to talk to her father, or for someone to let her know what was going on.

Her sister then asked to go to her roommate’s room, who had already received the news. Finally, Mendez said after being in her roommate’s room and demanding over and over to know what happened, that was when they told her her father had commited suicide.

‘I would hate for anyone to judge him’ Even to this day, Mendez and her family remain very close despite having a state between them.

Even when losing their house in California, they were able to work through the hard times together, she said. Mendez said by not giving up and pursuing her degree, she inspired her sister to get her associate’s degree.

“It did make our family closer because we now have a running group text and we constantly check in and we constantly talk throughout the day,” she said. “But it was definitely difficult for me being way out here and everything going on back home.”

Mendez said that there is a misconception about suicide, that she has heard people mention the false notion that suicide is selfish.

Senior’s daughter tags along with her to class

Senior family studies major Khiara Sumone Loera didn’t come to class with a just notebook and a pen, but also with her 2-year-old daughter Illiana.

Loera will be graduating this spring after taking her daughter to most of her classes as an undergrad.

Loera had to face many challenges while simultaneously having to combat a full class load schedule and taking care of her daughter. She would often juggle multiple jobs or take notes during lecture while looking after Illiana.

“The hardest times that I could think of was just being a single parent,” she said. “That extra help would have been nice and made things a lot smoother. But in life you don’t always get that and it was a bit frustrating.”

After her pregnancy, Loera also worked a graveyard shift while completing her degree.

an extra hand.

“Looking back at my childhood, I knew I wanted more for (Illiana), although I knew raising her as a single mom, I was going to have to work twice as hard to get where I needed to be. I had motivation before she was born but when she came into my life my motivation came on a whole other level,” she said.

Once Illiana was born Loera said she was a little worried going back into the classroom. She just wanted to be treated as a normal student, even if that meant she had to breast feed or take a moment away from class to check in with her daughter.

“That first day going back to school, my mentality was for them not to treat me any different. I wanted the teachers to know I was up for the challenge. I was paying attention and I was here to learn just like everyone else,” Loera said.

UNM’s Women’s Resource Center offers on-campus aid to help mothers that have to commute to class with their children.

Counseling sessions, scholarships for single mothers and private

breastfeeding rooms are a few of the many resources that are offered.

There are 17 lactation stations between main and north campus, 14 of which have hospital-grade breastfeeding pumps available.

The amount of support and positivity that Loera experienced on the

UNM campus stood out to her in a big way. She said students and professors didn’t treat her negatively and she never heard any complaints about having Illiana with her.

One of her biggest supporters was Virginia Shipman, one of her instructors.

A promise fulfilled As Mendez will walk up the aisle this week to receive her diploma alongside her close friend, the two will surely be thinking about the trying times they have overcome

One trip in particular was to California.

Before his death, Mendez’s father promised to cook for the two and take them to Disneyland.

Though her father passed before he, Mendez and Romero were able to ride Glacier Mountain together,

the family stayed true to the promise.

“I got a lot of experiences with Maria that not a lot of friends get to have,” Romero said.

Mendez’s schooling is not done, as she will shift her focus following graduation night to packing for Chicago in order to continue pursuing her academic dreams.

Khaira Leora spent her last two years at UNM completing her degree in family studies while attending class with her two-year-old daughter, Illiana.

“Like most of my teachers that made an impact in my life, she did much more,” Loera said.

Shipman showed her how to take a step back and look at her goals more slowly. She said while a person can never go back and redo motherhood, they can always find time to go back to school.

Loera will take a year off from school after graduation before she starts her master’s program in social work at Norfolk State University in Virginia. She plans to finish her master’s degree and begin working for the Children, Youth and Families Department before aiming for a federal position in her field.

“I am truly blessed. I hope to see more single parents — not just mothers — further their education (at UNM) and I hope to see more teaching staff accept it as well,” Loera said.

The senior has already been accepted to DePaul, where she will pursue a Master’s degree in Mental Health.

Ayse Muñiz

Student aims to integrate medicine and engineering

We are led to believe that the technologies of science fiction are impossible to achieve, and are merely outlets of creativity for writers and dreamers.

Biochemistry undergraduate Ayse Muñiz strives to challenge that assumption by integrating the fields of medicine and engineering, and in turn pushing the realm of possibility to the limit.

Muñiz was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to a family that frequently moved across the state as well as to Arizona. She graduated in her hometown in 2012 and went on to pursue further education at UNM, the first of her family to do so.

“I had no idea what I wanted to do. During my freshman orientation I believe I put down psychology as my major, just to have something there,” Muñiz said. “My then-boyfriend was doing nuclear engineering, and he recommended I should check out chemical engineering. I did a year and a half of that before switching to biochemistry.”

Muñiz took part in the Research

Experience for Undergraduates program the summer after her freshman year. The program, funded by the National Science Foundation, took place at the Center for High Technology Materials on south campus where Muñiz spent her time etching solar cells and contributing to various studies.

Muñiz landed her name on two research papers by her sophomore year, one of which published in the Journal of Electronic Materials where she was credited as second author.

In keeping with her passion, Muñiz joined the Maximizing Access to Research Careers program in 2014.

Included in the program was a grant that funded Muñiz in a lab of her choice for two years. Of five potential laboratories, she chose Jeffery Brinker’s biomedical engineering lab in the Centennial Engineering Center.

Despite her major in a renowned medical field, Muñizsaid that she has no intention to go to medical school but rather pursue a more engineering-focused curriculum in her graduate career and improve the relationship between the two fields.

“I really do like engineering. My whole goal is to apply engineering

principles to developing technologies that will help in medically relevant situations,” she said. “And so overall I noticed a gap in science, in the research being done and how the medical field is operated, such as with pharmaceutical industries.”

“There’s a rift there, I want to be a part of that solution to bridge the gap.”

In her two years in the lab, Muñiz worked with scientists of various backgrounds, including chemists, material scientists and biomedical engineers. She believes the diverse background of the laboratory is invaluable, as everyone has a different perspective to offer.

Moreover, Muñiz and her husband are both first generation college students in each of their respective families. She credits her success to the multiple opportunities UNM has provided along the way.

“Nobody in my family has gone to college before,” she said. “STEM has been a challenge, more so in that way.

I didn’t have family or friends in the field beforehand at all, and I didn’t know anything about anything before I came here. Now, I’ve been able to have all these experiences because of programs UNM has offered.”

After graduating with a bachelor’s of science in biochemistry later this week, Muñiz will pursue her doctorate at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in macromolecular science and engineering, which she intends to apply to medicine.

Muñiz is one of 2,000 students in the nation to receive the

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, which will be funding three years of her graduate education.

Education grad hopes to impact students’ lives

A little boy came into kindergarten without being able to read or write his name, hitting his classmates and refusing to talk to teachers. But by the end of the year, he had completely changed. The solution? Batman.

Nikole Couleur has been a student teacher at Bandelier Elementary School for three semesters.

During this time, the UNM senior has worked hard to engage kids and make learning fun for them. To do that, she worked to learn what each child’s individual passion is.

Like Batman, Couleur does not

have super powers, but she hopes to make a difference in her community with her degree in elementary education.

“I want to make a difference in at least one student’s life, a major difference,” she said. “I want them to remember me when they are older.”

For Couleur, choosing a career

was not difficult. She said she has known what she wanted to be since third grade.

“I would always play school with my sister and grandma. I would make them do homework and grade papers,” she said. “Teaching is the only thing I have had my mind set on from the beginning.”

According to the National Education Association website, the average starting salary for teachers in 2012-13 was $36,141. While not exactly a glorifying salary, Couleur is not in it for the money.

Single mom beats addiction to get her degree

By Sayyed Shah AnnaLisa Hightower, a senior nutrition and dietetics major, overcame a lot of personal and social hurdles to pursue her education.

She dropped out of high school and then got addicted to drugs.

“I should have graduated high school in 1986. I probably dropped out of high school in 1985. I thought that I was bored,” she said.

After dropping out of high school, she took two classes at the University but didn’t finish them.

“I just stopped going. It still shows on my records today that I got a D in one of those classes and an F,” she said.

She said that at that time nobody ever told her that she could have had those wiped, had she done it within a certain amount of time.

“So those grades are still following me around. I got involved with partying and you know high school and it got out of control, so I became a drug

addict and alcoholic that I struggled with through my young adult age,” she said.

But during that phase she also became a mother, she said.

“I was married, in an abusive relationship. After fourteen years of that relationship and rough marriage, I got out of that, because I found a note in my second oldest’s bed one day saying ‘save me from my father,’” Hightower said.

She was “35 or 36” when she filed for a divorce.

She said that, after the divorce, she realized that she could not support her children by just working at Wal-Mart.

“I had been a stay-at-home mom up to that point. My husband at that point was a business owner and was doing quite well. So we could afford for me to be a stay-at-home mom and drink,” she said.

She said that after filing for divorce she also realized she wouldn’t get far without an education.

She said that supporting three kids on Wal-Mart wages

was an uphill task.

“So, I decided I needed to go to school. Luckily, when I dropped out of high school, I had enough foresight to do my GED right away. So I had that,” she said.

At 37 she applied to CNM, but she still did not know what she wanted to do, she said.

“The easiest thing to do for me was to go to nursing school. So that is how I signed in to college. But that was not what I really wanted to do, and I don’t know why I wanted to go into nutrition, except for that was always something that intrigued me. And, within my first semester in CNM, I made my major,” she said.

She transferred to UNM after spending two years at CNM, she said.

She says she has a lot to celebrate.

“I am excited; I have never graduated before. I just celebrated 10 years clean and sober on April 23,” Hightower said.

She said that she has been working in her field for “probably” five years.

She will complete her degree in

UNM, an organization that encourages students to be active in community service and volunteer through the Red Cross in New Mexico. In her sophomore year, Couleur became president of the organization.

Two of the club’s biggest projects were installing fire alarms in elderly people’s homes, and going to schools to teach about fire safety and CPR. “With the Red Cross, their main philosophy is all about helping people and being there for others when no one else is,” Couleur said. “Teachers do kind of the same thing. It is about

being supportive and looking out for the community.”

After she graduates this week, Couleur plans to stay in Albuquerque for a year and then try to find a job in an underprivileged community in a different state or even a different country.

“I’ve had so much support throughout my life, but I know a lot of kids are not as lucky as I was,” she said. “I just want to be that influential person in their lives.”

adventures and excitement she experiences in the classroom make it all worthwhile, and will continue to do so in the future.

“Just the things the kids say every day, I am always surprised.

What I found to be most interesting is how different every kid is.

There are so many crazy stories,” she said. “There is a lot of gross stuff, which you probably do not want to know.”

Couleur’s passion for helping others expands beyond teaching basic school subjects and stopping kids from eating glue sticks.
