Time is no object for retirement-age grad

Louis Cimalore, a 65-year-old UNM graduate student, knows that as well as anyone.

Cimalore was a dual major in secondary education and history at the University of Rhode Island, but that was 41 years ago. This year he will receive his master’s degree in organization and information learning sciences (OILS) from UNM. In the course of those 41 years, Cimalore said, he has experienced a lot. He has worked with several social programs, primarily focusing on people in low-income areas of Albuquerque. His job experience includes working for SNAP, otherwise known as food stamps, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, a program that assists families in need mostly on a financial level.

Cimalore is currently a contractor for SL Start, a privately owned

company that helps people find jobs.

As a job coach, he helps people with their resumes and with finding jobs that suit them best. He also works with employers, connecting them to potential hires.

Cimalore also used to be the director of a program at the South Valley Economic Development Center, where he would assist people working on their GEDs, teach computer classes and even culinary classes. As director he would accompany people to different campuses for their GED testing; and from there, he knew that he wanted to go back to school.

“There was this one morning we came here to the UNM campus, and it was early in the morning.

The testing started about 8:00 in the morning,” Cimalore said. “I was just watching those kids as we walked across campus, and I saw in them possibilities that they’ve never seen before. I could just see in their faces that this is something they’d dreamed

that they’d never do, but I could feel a whole world of possibilities open up for them. I started thinking what my face would look like, in retrospect.”

After that, Cimalore said he enrolled at UNM as a non-degree grad. He said he wasn’t accepted to the first program he applied to because of his grades from his undergraduate degree many years ago, but was accepted into the second program he applied to, which was OILS. On his downtime, he said his he and his wife like to attend shows at Popejoy Hall. Three of his favorites are “The Lion King”, “Wicked” and “Fiddler on the Roof”. Cimalore also enjoys watching sports, including football.

“I love the Jets. I grew up on the east coast,” said Cimalore. “I remember when the Jets won (Super Bowl III), it was the first time an American Conference team won and beat the Colts. They haven’t had many good teams since then, but they did do well that one year.”

What’s the point of this?’” Cimalore said. “And the other voice would say, ‘Shut up!’ and I’m glad I listened to the second voice.”

Cimalore said he believes that education should be more accessible to everyone, regardless of their situation. He would also like to see public universities offer free tuition.

“I really think we should make education more available for everyone,” Cimalore said. “I know it’s expensive, and I’d like to see us get to the point where anybody that’s capable can go.”

At 64, Cimalore embodies timeless education, and would even be up for more time in the classroom.

“These 40 years between the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree ... whether I need it or not, I’m going to come back in another 40 (years),” he said jokingly.

Cimalore considers himself a lifelong learner, whether he’s learning formally or informally. That doesn’t come without any mental setbacks, however: He has often questioned coming back to school at his age, but he said he is glad he did.

Graduate endured homelessness at 13

By Liam Cary-Eaves On Friday night, Hayley Horowitz’s struggling chapter will come to a close.

While obtaining a college degree is a valued milestone for the majority of college graduates, Horowitz’s journey to reach the plateau is unlike most. Horowitz has not completed a grade following sixth, when she left her house at the age of 13, and was forced to endure her teenage years as a member of the homeless community.

“In a few short days, my fight will have ended,” she said. “I have literally been fighting almost all my life, and I don’t know what it’s like to not have to do that.”

Horowitz said the value she placed in education was a major priority in her life, but it seemed to be unobtainable following her unorthodox learning experience.

While staying with her boyfriend at the time, Horowitz said she realized that she had no idea what she would tell people upon being asked what she did for a living.

Horowitz was homeless and

focused on survival. She said she had no depth to her beyond trying to make it to the next day.

“I had nothing I could say. I was on the street, I don’t do anything,” she said. “I just go around day to day trying to get some change to buy some chips out of the vending machine.”

Further schooling aspirations Horowitz said she decided to change her misfortunes. She was going to get her GED and make something of her life.

However, for a person without a home, guardians or any assistance, getting a form of identification would

prove to be a difficult task, let alone obtaining a substitute for a high school diploma.

At age 16, Horowitz found a way to acquire an ID, followed by a GED. Her schooling didn’t end there; Horowitz said she wanted more, and the Lottery Scholarship allowed her to attend a community college in Santa Fe. Although still homeless, Horowtiz’s life was going to change for the better. She acted on her love for dance and took a swing and salsa class at the community college that led her into a swing and dance club where she would meet

her eventual husband, Mathew.

However, Mathew Horowitz departed to New York for a while, and Hayley Horowitz was about to endure a significant change in her life as well.

At age 19, Hayley Horowitz had her son Camilo Candelaria while “technically still homeless,” she said.

While the relationship with Candelaria’s father did not last long following his birth, Horowitz said she could not bear the thought of not giving her son her full attention while trying to go to school and work full-time.

Christmas’ spirit drives him to graduate

After a long journey fighting numerous physical disabilities, Christmas is coming early for one UNM senior, and it’s in the form of a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Ian Christmas will graduate from UNM this month, finishing his undergraduate studies with a 3.51 GPA. The road to graduation has been a challenging one: Christmas said he suffered a life-changing knee injury two weeks before graduating from One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia as a U.S. Army infantryman in 1997.

Originally from Hesperia, California, Christmas enlisted in the U.S. Army directly after graduating from high school due to a tight financial situation at home.

He said that joining the Army was a defining point in his life.

His injury derailed his military career, ultimately ending it. His injury went untreated for more than five years, and later contributed to

hip and spinal injuries, which left Christmas in a wheelchair until 2009. That’s when he decided to return to school at UNM. “College is a necessary thing nowadays, especially with me and my disabilities,” Christmas said. “The easiest way to get the jobs that allow you the latitude to have disabilities, you’ve got to have a college degree.”

After leaving the Army, Christmas ended up in Santa Fe for a job. That opportunity fell through, so he decided to stay at home full-time to raise his son.

When his son was old enough to start attending school, he decided to do the same.

Christmas began his time as an undergraduate at UNM in the engineering program. He said that he ultimately switched to economics because the amount of medications he was taking conflicted with his ability to meet tight deadlines for his engineering classes.

Christmas said he enjoys

the mathematics that both engineering and economics classes require, but he prefers economics because it allows him to analyze the bigger picture.

Christmas also minored in history, which he said goes hand-in-hand with economics. He said that some of his favorite topics to study were the history of American capitalism and the Depression Era. Due to his injuries, Christmas said he has not worked a fulltime job since 2003 and has been struggling to receive full medical benefits from the VA for over 10 years. Although he has been faced with these challenges, he said that the amount of resources at UNM for people with disabilities has been outstanding.

“The Accessibility Resource Center has been phenomenally wonderful with actually helping people in ways that are truly needed,” Christmas said.

Although his military career was cut short after his training accident, Christmas said that the

military mindset has helped him get through college.

“For school, you have to be goal-oriented and just do it. Even with all of my problems, I did the work,” Christmas said. “It may hurt, but you just push through it.”

After graduation, Christmas said he is hoping to take advantage of his economics degree and pursue a government job in banking and regulation. He said that he feels hopeful for the future, and that he is willing to go wherever job opportunities seem promising.

“Everything always works out.

Sometimes not exactly the way I planned it, but it all works out in the end,” Christmas said.

Hard work ultimately worked out well for Christmas as he will be graduating with a 3.51 cumulative GPA and honors from the Delta Alpha Pi International Honors Society.

Christmas said he hopes that his journey will set a good example for his 11-year-old son, who has been his motivation to finish

school. He said he never wants to see his son give up, no matter how bad things may get.

“Keep going no matter how hard it gets. Just keep pushing through and you’ll get to the end,” Christmas said. “No matter how hard it gets, there’s got to be something in your life to think about to keep you motivated.”

Returning to college challenging, but rewarding

Man, it seems like it’s taken a long time to get to this point.

Like many other students on this campus, I will take part in next week’s commencement celebration. I will walk up the ramp to receive two bachelor’s degrees: for multimedia journalism and history.

I’m also 33 years old — not the oldest nontraditional student out there, but older than many of my counterparts. The effort that I put in during this second stint in college makes this graduation much more important to me than my high school or associate’s degree.

I spent 10 years in the newspaper business before my career hit a standstill. I had worked as a layout guy; then later as a sports writer for the Star-Herald in Scottsbluff, Nebraska for five years; then served as the staff photographer at the Alamogordo Daily News for another five years.

Last time around, when I worked on my associate’s degree, I aspired to attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln (which is why I was in rural Nebraska in the first place). Nebraska didn’t let me in. I didn’t meet the academic requirements even

going the community college route.

I had a contingency plan because, well, I always have a contingency plan. Since Nebraska was now out of the picture, I looked into going to a state college to finish my degree. By that point I had already been promoted to sports reporter, and under advice from my editor stayed at the Star-Herald. I did the small newspaper thing for a while.

But my career halted in Alamogordo. Though I had 10 years in the business, I couldn’t even get an interview for a job. I kept hearing how all these young kids were getting jobs right out of college with up-to-date knowledge on modern journalism. I had a choice to make: stay in Alamogordo, or make a change. I chose the latter.

Hindsight is always 20/20 vision. I had been bitter for years about not getting accepted to Nebraska, but my experience here at UNM showed me that I lacked the maturity needed to attend a big University like this. Not everyone is capable of enduring these rigors right away; even in the community college realm, I saw it being High School Part II. Going through a major university system like this was much tougher than I anticipated. Unlike the time I tried 15 years ago, I came to realize that my life experiences helped me tremendously in dealing

with the volume of work. Then again, not all students have the added stress of covering a nationally recognized basketball program like I did for a few years.

Don’t take that the wrong way: It’s not a complaint by any stretch. As challenging as it’s been these last three-and-a-half years at UNM, this has easily been the most rewarding experience of my life. I initially joined the Daily Lobo staff in 2012 not to learn, but to ensure my current skills wouldn’t rust as I developed new talents. To be able to cover Lobo basketball was totally worth any increased load I faced.

I also developed my passion for history here.

For my entire adult life I squared my focus on journalism, and that’s it. I started at a newspaper right out of high school. I sacrificed a personal life for it. Coming back to school meant journalism would continue to be my sole focus ... until I took Andrew Sandoval-Strausz’s Early American History class and excelled, much to my surprise.

He talked me into taking his American Legal History class my second semester here.

It remains the most challenging, yet most worthwhile class I’ve taken here. It helped me establish a passion for American history (and later war history with courses from Paul Hutton,

Melissa Bokovoy and Caleb Richardson).

History helped keep me sane, a reprieve from journalism for a moment.

And yet, I still gained quite a bit from my Daily Lobo experience. Because my career hit a snag, I felt pretty low about my trajectory. Though it has been rocky at times – as all life experiences are - I did reconnect with the field. Basketball had a lot to do with that, too, but so did my friendships with Thomas Romeo-Salas, Liam Cary-Eaves and others at the paper.

My time here at UNM isn’t over yet. I’ve been accepted to graduate school to get a master’s in sport administration, and I will start the program this spring. I’m devoted to going back to sports full-time, whether it be in journalism or in another realm.

But with undergraduate completion right around the corner, I can’t help but feel a level of pride I haven’t felt before. My last two graduations I walked for commencement because my family insisted. This time, I’m walking for me.

intersectional lens that focused on sexuality and religion, sexuality and race, and sexuality for people on the LGBTQ spectrum.

During the “State of Sex Education” panel, Matie Fricker, owner of Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center, explained the inadequacies of our current sex education systems by comparing them to driver’s education: “Imagine if we only told students, ‘Don’t drive.

You’ll probably get in a crash and there are consequences to making that choice. But if you do drive, wear a seatbelt.’”

Matie explained that only teaching students what not to do, or how to prevent pregnancy and STIs, does not go far enough. Sex education that only focuses on prevention does not accurately address the reasons that young people are having sex, and does not give them the information they need to have healthy sexual relationships.

That being said, conversations about safe sex

were present throughout Sex Week, with specific presentations geared toward STI prevention and birth control.

Presenters highlighted what good communication and enthusiastic consent looks like in different situations. During “Sex Ed A Go Go,” students from the audience acted out scenes of consent. During “Sex Ed Quickies for the 21st Century,” Mike Guichete discussed sex-positive parenting, and how to reduce the impact of rape culture on children. He discussed the importance of allowing children to establish boundaries and privacy, and helping children learn that their bodies should be respected.

For me, the most crucial part of Sex Week was the creation of a shame-free environment where students could have real conversations about a topic that affects all of us. Students should not be afraid to ask real questions about sexuality, and to explore what makes them

happy in a supportive environment. What is portrayed in movies and taught in mainstream sex education is incomplete at best, and inaccurate and unhealthy at its worst. Sex-positive education means students can get the full picture and can make decisions about what is best for themselves.

The university setting is designed to facilitate learning and to expose students to new ideas.

I think that accurate, fact-based information about sex is an essential part of the college experience. I am grateful for the organizers of SexUality Week at UNM, and was especially pleased to see such strong support from the campus administration, the student body and the Albuquerque community at large.

as “pro-life” supporting the shooter, or arguing that that’s what Planned Parenthood gets for “murdering babies every day.”

I am aware that these people are on the extreme end of the pro-life spectrum.

However, I also noticed that Republican presidential candidates, pro-life groups and pro-life individuals refused to take any responsibility for what occurred in Colorado Springs. They sent prayers to the victims, and then they continued on with plans to defund Planned Parenthood and to limit the choices

women have when it comes to reproduction.

These are the same people who stand in front of huge audiences and vilify people who connect themselves with Planned Parenthood. These are people who constantly spread lies about Planned Parenthood and how they “sell baby parts.” These are the people who stand outside clinics, protesting and spewing hateful messages about people being “disgusting,” “murderers,” or that they are “going to go to hell.” These are the same people who act shocked when a man goes in

to a clinic with a gun and kills people because of the lies and the hate he has heard, believed and spewed about Planned Parenthood.

Anti-abortion rhetoric is often hateful, dehumanizing and filled with misinformation. This rhetoric leads to violence. It does not matter what you think about abortion: hate has no place in the conversations surrounding abortion.

20-year student career to end this week

JD Blatchford-Rodriguez is a Desert Storm veteran, as well as a father of two, and will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts. It has taken BlatchfordRodriguez 20 years to graduate due to his obligations to his family and his job, but said he feels relieved that the pursuit is over.

“My dad, when I was three years old, brought me to the U.S.,” Blatchford-Rodriguez said. “I was actually born in Mexico City ... my dad brought me to the U.S., he was self-taught how to read, write and speak English within a year.”

Blatchford-Rodriguez is the eldest son of seven children, with two older sisters, two younger sisters and two younger brothers. Out of his six siblings, he is the first to earn a college degree.

“Because of what (my father) decided to do, it made a big difference for me,” he said, “If we look at (the)

education scaffolding and being able to learn from a different point, he gave me a different perspective, a different opportunity.”

Blatchford-Rodriguez’s mother only required that he and his siblings obtain high school degrees.

“My mother, when she was alive, used to say, ‘All I want you to do is to give me a high school diploma,’” he said. “She said. ‘As long as all seven of you give me a high school diploma, I’ll know that you have an education to do something in life.’”

Blatchford-Rodriguez’s path has not been without challenges. He said the biggest challenge in his life was supporting a family through college, but he faced other obstacles along the way.

“The racial hegemony of race, class and gender in many different aspects was a big thing to deal with,” he said. “Based on whatever school I was going to, whatever professor I was having, what their perspective was, if they felt I deserved the grade or not.”

Blatchford-Rodriguez said he had

encounters with biased professors, but he said he doesn’t harbor any hard feelings.

“The coursework was there, but they decided to give me the grade based on their own perceptions,” Blatchford-Rodriguez said.

“It happens; they decide based on whatever they desire ... we have policies and procedures for education, but I still had to deal with that.”

It has taken BlatchfordRodriguez 20 years to earn his degree. During that time he has helped his wife earn her degree and is putting his two daughters through pre-med. BlatchfordRodriguez said scheduling was very important through his journey.

“Where I was working at, I would work a graveyard shift or a swing shift so I could go to school during the day,” Blatchford-Rodriguez said. “My manager was flexible with my schedule ... I would leave for two hours in the middle of the day to go to class ... (and) I kept doing that every semester.”

Blatchford-Rodriguez said he was

only able to take one or two classes a semester because he was working full-time and supporting a family, and sometimes he had to take a semester off from school for his family.

“Going back and forth to go to school, if I had to skip a semester then I would have to do that based on work or whatever I needed to do,” Blatchford-Rodriguez said. “That’s why it took me forever.”

He said now that he’s graduated, he’s looking for a new place to live.

“My wife wants to go back to where she was raised most of her adult life, which was Okinawa, Japan,” Blatchford-Rodriguez said. “To get a job there is the final goal, but if we can get a job in Virginia or Hawaii, we want to be somewhere close to water.

Living in a desert for 14 years really dries you out.”

Blatchford-Rodriguez said that along with helping his family get through college, he felt he has inspired others in his family to do the same.

“I got nieces and nephews that

are right behind me,” he said. “So I’ve inspired them to go get their education, too.”

Blatchford-Rodriguez said he wants to encourage non-traditional students to pursue college and to push through until the end.

“I was an underdog because it took me so long to get a degree,” he said, “but desiring to do something and never stopping from what you desire is important, so pursue your goals and don’t be discouraged.”

Anaya finishes inspiring career

By Thomas Romero-Salas After high school, the options that David Anaya had to continue his football career weren’t great.

Anaya had offers from a few Division II schools and junior colleges, but he didn’t want to go to a small university. His goal was to go Division I and play among the country’s best athletes.

That goal didn’t look promising, until UNM head coach Bob Davie decided to sit down and watch a tape of Anaya. Davie liked what he saw and contacted Anaya about coming to the University of New Mexico.

The offer to play at UNM intrigued Anaya, and he decided that his best option was to walk-on to the program in 2012.

“I wanted to go D-I first of all, and UNM had always been in my mind,” he said. “All of my brothers have gone to New Mexico State, so I wanted to create this sibling rivalry by going here.”

After having one of the best high school careers in New Mexico history at Goddard High in Roswell, Anaya came to UNM with no guarantees of playing time.

However, with a limited number of players at Davie’s disposal because of a high attrition rate, Anaya played in all 13 games as a freshman and even earned two starts at running back when UNM started with a two-back set.

Anaya eventually worked his way toward earning a full scholarship after the 2013 season.

“It was a humbling experience, walking on and having to earn everything that I’ve gotten,” he said.

“It’s also that kind of thing that I play with these guys and really play anybody in the country. That confidence has really carried me to do this.”

Anaya’s drive to succeed came from an entirely different sport. At first, he wanted to play basketball in high school, but he quickly realized it wasn’t his game.

He then chose to wrestle after talking to his middle school coach Mike Guerrero, who told him that it would improve his strength for football.

However, it was Goddard wrestling coach Jaime Martinez that would help Anaya become one of the better wrestlers in the state. Anaya became the first wrestler in Goddard history to place every year at State, and he eventually became a state champion at 185 pounds in 2011.

“Martinez (was) the one that instilled (in) me ... that nothing comes easy,” Anaya said. “He put that dog mentality and that winning mentality in my mind.

That’s what really pushed me over the edge in wrestling.”

His mentality helped him accept his role at UNM. The running back never had more than 30 carries in a season, but played an integral role on special teams throughout his career.

In the Lobos’ 14-13 win over Utah State this year, Anaya forced a fumble on a punt return that led to a touchdown and recovered Carlos Wiggins’ fumble in the fourth quarter, preventing the Aggies from starting at good field position.

“Winning is kind of my mentality,” Anaya said. “All I want to do is win, whether it’s getting the ball on special teams or getting the ball on offense.”

Davie said he’s grateful for everything that Anaya has done for the Lobos.

“It’s going to be hard to replace David Anaya,” Davie said. “I was jogging yesterday and thinking about how David Anaya won’t be here next year. You think about all the things he’s done for us. He’s an incredible kid and an incredible player.”

Spanish major earns degree in five semesters

Maria Andrea Aguilar is graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences this month, and she took a not-sotraditional path to her Spanish degree, completing the requirements in just two and a half years.

Aguilar said that she has always known what is she capable of, and she always try to meet her goals.

“I knew it would be possible for me to obtain my degree in less than four years, and therefore I had to do my best to do it,” she said. “I am currently engaged, and would love to start a family soon, but I knew getting my degree and finishing my education was a priority. Therefore, I pushed through it so that my fiancé and I could graduate together and move on to our next step in life.”

She said that she knew it was going to take a few full-time summers and a huge overload of classes each semester, but said she was up for the challenge.

Completing her degree in two and a half years required taking about nine credit hours each summer, and 18-plus credit hours most semesters, including one 24-credit hour semester to fulfill all the requisites for graduation.

“It also took a lot of organization, because many classes have prerequisites, therefore every semester I was on top of seeing my adviser and checking Lobo Trax to make sure that I was on schedule with all my classes,” she said.

Aguilar said managing the overload was very difficult, especially while maintaining a job. She was able to get through the classes through a lot of organization, she said.

“Every week I would make a schedule allowing me enough time to rest, do all my assignments and still be able to hang out with family and friends,” she said. “I also had a lot of encouragement and motivation from my family.”

old and lived in Socorro for a few years before attending New Mexico Military Institute for high school. She said she loves playing golf and staying active. She currently works at Baca & Howard P.C. as an accounting intern.

She said UNM served as a great stepping stone for her future.

“The staff was always willing to help when I had any questions or any troubles,” she said. “My teachers were always understanding and willing to

lend a helping hand. UNM allowed me to obtain my degree in a quick period of time, which I will always be grateful for.”

She suggested that students take as many classes as they can without stressing themselves out.

“Your freshman and sophomore years will be your easiest classes, so just get into a routine and you’ll be just fine,” she said.

She also recommended having study partners in each class.

“Throughout all my classes, I realized that I was doing better in classes where I had a studying partner. I tried to take the classes with my friends that I could, because I knew that if we worked together we both would do better,” she said.

She said that she also visited CAPS a few times, especially when she had trouble with the homework.

“Also, asking the teacher for studying suggestions for the exams was very helpful. However, I believe having a study partner in each class is crucial,” she said.

She and her fiancé will be

moving to Portland in January, she said. She plans to pursue a Master of Science in financial analysis and accounting at Portland State University.

Aguilar said that graduating in such a short period of time was difficult, but well worth it.

“It gives you a head start in life and in your career,” she said. “It puts you a step ahead of everyone when it comes to achieving your goals and dreams.”

She said that even though most people will say that she missed out on “the college experience” because she was doing a lot of homework and studying, she now has enough free time and a stable job to do all of the things she may have put aside in the past couple of years.

“If I could go back and change anything, I wouldn’t change a thing,” she said.

Graduating with the prestigious summa cum laude with her Bachelor of Arts in strategic communication is something Mathew Horowitz said he comes to expect from his wife. He said Hayley Horowitz has never done anything without the full intention of giving the task her best effort.

Hayley Horowitz has already reaped the benefits of a degree, despite not yet having her diploma. She described her job at the Academy for the Love of Learning as perfect.

“The mission is basically to nurture and sustain a natural love of learning for all ages,” she said. “We have a lot of different programs throughout the community that materialize that in whatever shape that takes.”

Hayley Horowitz battled adversities and unlikely odds to complete her education.

“Considering some of the challenges I’ve faced, I should be either technically dead or in jail,” she said.

“But I’m not. I’m here. And that’s really significant.”

Shift to caregiver She was forced to drop out of UNM after moving to Albuquerque to be with Candelaria’s father. Hayley Horowitz returned to Santa Fe and resided at a Transitional Living Program, a place she found comfort in during her youth.

She said she was not satisfied with staying at the Transitional Living Program, which she described as “helping kids get on their feet.”

“At that time I wanted to have a home, I wanted to have a house, and so I set my sights on what it might take to do that,” she said.

At 23, Hayley Horowitz was able to buy a home, providing a stable roof over her son’s head — something

Horowitz went a large portion of her life without. The move back to Santa Fe also reunited her with someone she had been quite fond of, someone she described as “always having a crush on”.

“When we got together about five years ago, we started talking about it because she’s absolutely brilliant,” Mathew Horowitz said. “She was just kind of doing some retail jobs here in Santa Fe, and it wasn’t totally fulfilling. She definitely had more to offer to the world and to society.”

her dream of a college degree.

The transformation in Hayley Horowitz’s life has been so drastic that she said it’s hard to remember the person she was: a kid just trying to survive. However, she said it’s something that will always be a significant part of her life.

“Somewhere deep down inside I’m still that very insecure kind of scared homeless girl,” she said. “I battle with that, but with my son it was never a question.”

After Hayley and Mathew Horowitz were together, Hayley Horowitz no longer had to focus solely on being a caregiver for her son.

The Reserve Officer Training Corps, ROTC, commissions officers into the United States Armed Forces to serve the nation in Active, National Guard, or Reserve units. Since World War I, ROTC has produced the majority of our nation’s military leaders. The concept of training and commissioning the military’s junior leaders at colleges and universities across the country has become an integral part of providing our nation’s military with well rounded, educated officers. ROTC students experience a traditional college life while also receiving leadership and military training. UNM is one of the few schools in the nation to have all four military services represented on campus.

Student achieves long-held dream of graduating

Setting goals is often considered the first step when working toward achieving something in life. For one student, the goal of graduating college was apparent early on, posted on the bulletin board in her bedroom while she was still attending Rio Rancho High School.

Even after switching majors, Jocelyn Fafard will graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Science in family studies in just three and a half years on Saturday. Fafard said college was on her mind early, and she was fortunate to have parents that provided strong support along the way.

“In high school I started taking dual credit classes at CNM, and I took AP classes,” she said. “My parents definitely motivated me to get higher education.”

Fafard said she was originally a journalism major, but decided to switch fields of study, and fam-

ily studies stood out for her. She said she found her passion when she took a marriage and family relationships course that captured her attention.

While studying, she said one of the instructors, Ashley Martin, presented her with the opportunity to volunteer at a family advocacy center, where she gained valuable experience.

About a year ago, Fafard started working at APN Family Support Center as a supervisor. Fafard said the center offers parenting classes and facilitates supervised visits and exchanges, often working with families that involve divorced parents who have lost custody of their children.

She said sometimes the experience is difficult because families go through a lot of hardships together, and while one person might make one bad decision, the whole family has to deal with the aftermath.

She said she learned in class how many families are struggling, especially in Albuquerque, and she was particularly concerned with the ef-

fects divorce can have on children.

She said no child deserves to go through that, and she wants to be a source of relief for them.

“I grew up in such a great home; all children deserve to grow up in a great home,” she said.

Fafard said her fiancé, Joseph de Anda, has been that person for her.

She said he is always there to listen, which can be a good stress reliever.

De Anda is a member of the military stationed in Arkansas. He said he has known Fafard since high school, and they have been together for about four years. De Anda said Fafard has always been very productive and driven, and remembers how meticulous she was in planning things.

“She had this list on her bulletin board in her room, and it said, ‘Finish one year of college before graduating high school,’” de Anda said. “It was always pretty definite that she was going to college.”

Fafard said she is looking forward to moving to Arkansas soon and start-

ing the next chapter of her life. She does expect to pursue a master’s degree, but wants to take advantage of family advocacy opportunities in Arkansas, because experience is a good teacher.

Fafard said she also learned to speak German while minoring in the language, as well as political science, and said that might come in handy if they get stationed overseas. She said she is thankful for the experiences she

has already had in Albuquerque.

Jonathan Montoya, a friend and co-worker, helped Fafard get the job at APN Family Support Center. He said there were signs pointing to Fafard ending up as a family studies major, even though that wasn’t her original intention..

Montoya said the job teaches that life can be tough, and it always throws obstacles in your way. He said he knows that Fafard has always been goal-oriented and will overcome whatever life throws at her.

“In the future, I see her doing anything her heart desires. If that means having a family of her own, extra schooling, traveling the world, I could see her doing it,” Montoya said. “If it’s on the bulletin board, she sets her mind to it, and she’s gonna accomplish it.”

Pair of Lobos graduate with superb GPAs

By Isabel Gonzalez “Humbling” is the word men’s soccer head coach Jeremy Fishbein used to describe the two seniors who will receive their college degrees this semester.

The two “interesting cats,” as Fishbein described them, are Josh Dye and Adrian Mora Delgado.

“Those are two stable guys,” Fishbein said. “More than anything, they epitomize what a student-athlete is. It’s a bit humbling. They’re both engineering majors with 4.0 GPAs and they’re Division I athletes.”

A La Cueva High School graduate, Dye said he grew up in Albuquerque watching the Lobos and going to their camps, so being a Lobo is something he always aspired to.

“My most memorable experience was my first career start two years ago at Old Dominion,” Dye said. “It was just a great feeling.”

His first career start resulted in a 3-0 victory over then-No. 24 Old Dominion.

Dye, a midfielder, finished his

career with one goal and two assists.

He appeared in 52 games and played 3,539 minutes during his tenure as a Lobo. This November, Dye was named First Team Academic All-America by CoSIDA, which he earned by achieving a 4.07 GPA in electrical engineering.

“I just try to get my assignments done when I’m not doing soccer stuff,” Dye said. “It’s not easy, but I had learned how to managed my time wisely.”

Fishbein described the award as “well-deserved” and said Dye is a “great example” of what student-athletes should aspire to be.

Dye will attend graduate school to get his master’s degree. He is also getting ready to be married next year, and says he is beyond excited about the future.

Unlike Dye, who watched the Lobos his entire life, Mora Delgado was born in Costa Rica. The midfielder said he didn’t know what to expect from UNM because he never got a chance to visit before he transferred.

Today, Mora describes his time as a Lobo as “amazing,” even though

there were several ups and downs.

After suffering a knee injury during preseason his junior year, Mora had to take a medical redshirt and sit out.

“I think prior to getting hurt two years ago, he was maybe our best player in the preseason,” Fishbein said.

Mora described this period as difficult, but he also said some positives came out of it.

“It’s never easy to come back from a nine-month injury, but it definitely made me build some character,” he said.

His knee was healed by the next season, but other problems came up.

Mora Delgado came to the Lobos as a transfer from Costa Rica, and the NCAA said there were some discrepancies during the process, so Mora was declared ineligible to play.

But this didn’t discourage him, so he decided to just stick around.

“I knew I wasn’t going to get out of this program that way,” Mora said during his comeback at the beginning of the 2015 fall season.

As a senior, Mora made 11 appearances and played 579 minutes. Mora

will graduate with a GPA above 3.9.

He plans to continue working as an engineer intern and eventually become a professional engineer.

Fishbein said the real world is going to hit both Mora and Dye soon, but he thinks they’ll be alright because of everything they’ve

already accomplished.

“It’s phenomenal. I’m really proud of them,” he said.

Single, young mother graduates despite odds

College students are expected to take on a lot of pressure, stress and responsibility during the school year.

But for Monique Trujillo, the pressure was doubled when entering college at age 17, with both her education to complete and her 1-year-old son Jacob to care for.

Trujillo will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology this semester, and she said she is looking forward to working toward her master’s degree next fall.

First, she said she plans on taking a break from school to get into Albuquerque Public Schools and attain her alternative teaching license so she can teach while working on her master’s.

“I am super proud. I get to walk with such confidence knowing that I overcame (the odds),” she said. “I beat the odds of being teenage mom and a single mom, and I now have my degree at age 22 with my child.”

There are many hidden struggles that come with being a single mom and attending a higher-level institution at the same time. Trujillo said everything is essentially twice as hard.

“You have to take the time to take care of your child while still having enough time to do your studies and homework,” Trujillo said. “Now my son’s in school, and now I have to help him with his homework while getting my own done. You don’t get to take the classes at the exact times that you want; you have to make sure they are good with his schedule. If he gets sick, then you have to deal with their sickness.”

Trujillo’s original plan was to graduate in the spring. However, she didn’t meet the requirements for a single class, setting her back a semester.

Additionally, her son had a double ear infection, causing her to be out of school for about two and a half weeks, which led to her falling behind on her studies and being unable to catch up in time. That obstacle made her question whether she could continue.

“Having that failure made me question if I was able to do it. Any time I got a grade lower than I wanted, I questioned (myself),” she said. “But looking at him made me want to push forward, made me want to continue.”

Trujillo said she wouldn’t have been able to accomplish all that she has done if she didn’t have the support of her family along the way. She said her parents were great supporters, and her brother worked around his own work schedule to help out with Jacob as much as he could.

She received help not only from family members, but from the University as well. She encourages others going through the same situation – or those considering attending college that have children – to not give up.

“You can always ask for help. Help is something most people are reluctant to ask for, but it is your main resource. The advisers are some of the main people that helped me. I didn’t know about the daycare center here, I didn’t know about a lot of aspects until I started asking for help,” she said.

Parentless childhood didn’t hold grad back

One UNM student, with the deck stacked against her, will graduate this semester and chase her dreams farther than she ever imagined.

Daniela Romero was born in New Mexico and grew up in a oneparent home, she said. However, it wasn’t her parent who raised her, but her great grandmother. Romero said this was due to the fact that her parents were both drug addicts.

Her dad went to prison when she was four years old, and he wasn’t released until she was 15.

“My mom was in and out of my life for my whole life,” Romero said, “So my great grandmother raised me and my two sisters.”

Despite that, Romero said she was committed to her education.

“I always did good in school in elementary school, and I was always going to the counselors because they knew about my situation,” she said.

“The counselors often talked to us.”

Unfortunately, that early success didn’t last. Romero said by the time she got into middle school, she started acting out.

“It was just something I learned,” she said. “It was more normal for

me to get into the lifestyle that I did get into.”

Romero said she started smoking marijuana at the age of 8. By 12 she was drinking. This trend continued, and eventually led to her dropping out of school in the sixth grade.

Romero said she returned to school for eighth grade, attending Los Puentes Charter School — school for troubled youth — at the insistence of a friend.

But, once again, it did not last, and she dropped out in ninth grade, she said. But the next time she enrolled she was committed to finishing her education.

“I went back and actually finished high school,” Romero said.

“The teachers at Los Puentes are actually the ones who helped me get into college.”

After high school, Romero said she started at CNM and continued on to UNM. “UNM has contributed greatly to my growth,” Romero said. “It has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and introduced me to people I never would have socialized with if I hadn’t had the opportunity at UNM. It’s definitely pushed me to be more and know that I can achieve my goals.”

major in psychology and criminology, and a minor in evolutionary anthropology.

“It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally going to graduate,” she said. “I feel grateful, honestly; I didn’t think I was going to graduate high school. I thought I was going to have a sixth-grade education for the rest of my life.”

Once she started college, her dreams began to take shape and, for the first time, she knew what she wanted to do.

“My biggest inspiration was definitely what I want to do with my career ... work with at-risk youth like me,” Romero said. “To show others teenagers like me, who grew up like me or have similar stories as me, that they could get out of it, and they don’t have to stay stuck.”

Romero is already giving back: She said she is currently volunteering at the D-home. She said the biggest reward from volunteering is “impacting lives: if there’s one life I can get to and change ... that’s my goal”

Looking back now, Lovato remembers the struggles before the surgeries and how she felt angry with school, other people and herself.

Despite the hardships, Lovato has

taken away more than just a degree or the knowledge that she can continue one with her dreams.

“After my surgeries I realized how terrible that was, and I’ve really strived to become a nicer and more sympathetic person and to know that everybody goes through their

“I know there’s a lot of youth at the D-home that tell me the only reason they get themselves in trouble (is) because their parents aren’t around, or they don’t like the household they’re in. They get in trouble just to have a place to sleep,” Romero said. “I know there’s a lot of youth like that ... A good home is where it starts” Romero said people raised under difficult circumstances should not be encumbered by them, and she knows from experience that anything is possible with determination.

“Just make up your mind not to quit, and I know it sounds cliché, but the whole thing about not giving up is something I decided to do from day one,” she said. “I’m not the brightest crayon in the box, but (I believe in) dedication and continuing with it until you meet the goal that you want.”

Lovato attributes her success in school to her friends who have been with her through it all.

“It’s really hard for someone to understand the effects of a chronic

illness when you have never felt it,” Lovato said. “I was really lucky to have very sympathetic friends, and they’re really supportive of me and they always said to ‘put your health first, you can always come back to school.’”
