n behalf of CONCACAF, I’m pleased to welcome you to the 13th Gold Cup, the Confederation’s premier championship for national teams. This year, it provides the perfect opportunity to unite the football family and celebrate the sport in our region.

Since the first edition in 1991, the Gold Cup has grown into a first-class event, earning support and interest from millions of fans across the globe. Two years ago, it drew more than 500,000 fans to the stadiums and generated record numbers of television viewers. In the United States alone, in excess of 36 million people watched the matches on the networks of our broadcast partners.

Gathering elite players from 12 CONCACAF countries, the 2015 version of the biennial tournament promises to be the most competitive ever.

For the first time since 2003, the Gold Cup will feature a third-place match, to be played on July 25 at PPL Park, making the finals weekend in Philadelphia a true celebration of the sport.

A day later, the Final will be contested at Lincoln Financial Field. If the 2013 champion United States repeats, it will represent CONCACAF in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. If not, the 2015 winner will meet the Americans in a playoff for the valued berth.

The Gold Cup allows CONCACAF to support football throughout the region, providing significant resources for development activities that assist our Member Associations in growing the game. In addition, through programs such as Embrace Diversity, the Confederation harnesses the power of football to foster an environment of integration, collaboration and positive social change.

CONCACAF is grateful for the support of all Member Associations, officials, coaches, players, partners, sponsors, media and fans. We also extend our congratulations to the participating teams: Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States.

n nombre de CONCACAF, me complace darle la bienvenida a la decimotercera edición de Copa Oro y a los 12 países participantes, al campeonato premier de la Confederación para selecciones nacionales. Este año, el torneo brinda la mejor oportunidad para reunir a la familia del fútbol y celebrar este especial evento en la región.

Desde el origen de la competencia en 1991, la Copa Oro ha sido proclamada como un evento de primera clase, que atrae el interés y el apoyo de aficionados de todo el mundo. En 2013, el torneo contó con la asistencia de más de 500,000 aficionados y registró números record en audiencias de televisión. Solamente en EE. UU., más de 36 millones de televidentes siguieron los partidos a través de los canales de nuestros socios de televisión.

Congregando a jugadores elite de 12 países de CONCACAF, la competencia bienal de 2015 promete continuar siendo la más competitiva. Por primera vez desde la edición de 2003, el torneo presentará un partido por el tercer puesto, que se jugará el sábado 25 de julio en el PPL Park, convirtiendo el fin de semana de finales de la Copa Oro en Filadelfia en una celebración del deporte.

Un día después, la Final se jugará en la ciudad de Filadelfia en el estadio Lincoln Financial Field. El partido determinará el equipo que representará a CONCACAF en la próxima Copa FIFA Confederaciones 2017. Si el campeón de la Copa Oro 2013, EE. UU., gana la edición de 2015, esta selección será la representante. De lo contrario, el ganador de la Copa Oro 2015 jugará un partido eliminatorio con los estadounidenses para determinar al representante de CONCACAF. La Copa Oro permite a CONCACAF apoyar al fútbol a través de la región, brindando recursos significativos para programas de desarrollo que asisten a las Asociaciones Miembro en el crecimiento del juego. Asimismo, mediante iniciativas como Celebra la Diversidad y alianzas sólidas, la Confederación aprovecha el poder del juego para promover un ambiente de integración, cooperación y cambio social.

Much more than football Mucho más que fútbol In April 2013, CONCACAF and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) agreed to collaborate, engaging football in the AIDS response, particularly among young people. The partnership is an unprecedented commitment to carry out joint advocacy and communications activities in regional competitions organized by CONCACAF. In order to support the UNAIDS “Protect the Goal” campaign, banners are positioned in highly-visible areas of a venue and a pledge is read over the public address system by the captain of each participating team before designated games throughout a CONCACAF tournament.

La CONCACAF trabaja junto con Naciones Unidas en el marco de la campaña “Protege la meta”, un programa que pretende generar conciencia acerca del virus del VIH y su prevención, especialmente con los jóvenes.

Desde 2013, cuando la Confederación y ONUSIDA firmaron el acuerdo para vincular el fútbol con la respuesta a la enfermedad, todas las competencias organizadas por la CONCACAF incluyen actividades de promoción y difusión de la campaña.

Embrace Diversity is a regional initiative created by CONCACAF in 2013 to provide a strong, well-recognized, effective and influential voice for the promotion of integration within the football community and society.

The campaign addresses discrimination concerns through educational/awareness activities, coalition campaigns, prevention and monitoring, as well as regulation that can facilitate the referral of discriminatory incidents within football.

CONCACAF embraces and promotes diversity as a key value of football and life. By fostering a culture of respect and inclusiveness, a commitment to fair play complements the pursuit of excellence on-and-off the field.

La Confederación continúa apostando fuertemente en su campaña “Celebra la Diversidad”, una iniciativa lanzada en julio de 2013 que tiene como objetivo promover la integración dentro de la comunidad del fútbol mediante los valores de igualdad, respeto e inclusión a través del deporte.

La iniciativa incluye actividades educativas, así como tareas de prevención y monitoreo de cualquier incidente o acto discriminatorio. En ese sentido, este año la CONCACAF lanzó su primer Manual de Diversidad, una guía que ofrece herramientas concretas para ampliar los conceptos de aceptación e inclusión tanto dentro de la cancha como fuera de ella.

GOLD CUP: Save the date COPA ORO, la cita máxima

S

ince 1991, the CONCACAF Gold Cup has been the confederation’s premier event for men’s national teams, crowning a champion every two years.

Growing from an eight- to a 12-team competition, Gold Cup participants come from each of CONCACAF’s three sub-regions: North America (3 automatic entrants), Central America (4.5 qualifiers through the Central American Cup) and the Caribbean (4.5 qualifiers through the Caribbean Cup).

Contested on 12 previous occasions, Mexico owns a tournament-record six titles, followed by the United States with five and Canada with one.

The U.S. captured the inaugural championship, outlasting Honduras on penalty kicks in the final, 4-3, after a scoreless draw. That year, the entire tournament was held in two Southern California venues - the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Bowl.

Highlighting the Gold Cup’s spectacular evolution, more than 1,000,000 fans have combined to attend the last two editions, each played in state-of-the-art stadiums across the U. S. The current champion U.S. possesses half a ticket to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and will face the 2015 winner in a single-game playoff for the right to represent CONCACAF in Russia. If the Americans lift the trophy once again, they will earn direct qualification.

a Copa Oro de la CONCACAF se celebra cada dos años y es el principal evento de la Confederación para las selecciones nacionales de la región.Aunque inicialmente incluía solo ocho equipos, hoy se ha convertido en una competencia en la que participan 12 países. El torneo ha alcanzado niveles excepcionales de popularidad, movilizando multitudes hacia los estadios y atrayendo a millones de televidentes que siguen los partidos desde distintas partes del mundo.

Estados Unidos se coronó campeón de la primera edición del torneo en 1991. En esa ocasión, el equipo estadounidense, después de haber empatado sin goles, derrotó 4 a 3 a Honduras en los penales. El primer campeonato de Copa Oro tuvo lugar en solo dos estadios: el Memorial Coliseum de Los Ángeles y el Rose Bowl de Pasadena.

A partir de ese año, edición tras edición, el torneo ha crecido exponencialmente. Del 7 al 26 de julio,Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Ángeles, Nueva York, Filadelfia, Phoenix y Toronto darán la bienvenida a la Copa Oro 2015, que por primera vez se organizará conjuntamente entre Estados Unidos y Canadá.

El estadio Lincoln Financial Field, en Filadelfia, será el escenario de la final, que se jugará el domingo 26 de julio. El partido por el tercer puesto se disputará el sábado en el PPL Park, en la misma ciudad.

he Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is the governing body of football in the region and one of six continental authorities that administer the sport globally along with FIFA. Based in Miami, Florida, USA, CONCACAF is composed of 41 Member Associations, an Executive Committee and a General Secretariat, all supported by multiple committees. Working passionately to advance the game, CONCACAF organizes competitions, encourages development through technical/administrative programs and builds relationships with stakeholders.

Formed in 1961 from the merger of the Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol and the North American Football Confederation, CONCACAF extends from Canada in the north to Guiana, Suriname and French Guyana on the South American continent.

Though CONCACAF’s most visible competitions are the biennial Gold Cup for men’s national teams and the annual Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League for clubs, the Confederation organizes championships at the under-17 and under-20 levels for men and women that lead to direct qualification for FIFA World Cups. CONCACAF also assists in conducting qualifying tournaments for the World Cup, the Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games, plus the Beach Soccer and Futsal World Cups.

Con base en Miami, Florida, Estados Unidos, CONCACAF está compuesta por 41 Asociaciones Miembro, un Comité Ejecutivo y una Secretaría General, con sus respectivos comités. Su función principal es la de desarrollar, promover y organizar el fútbol en la región con integridad, transparencia y pasión, con el fin de inspirar la participación en el juego.

Once every two years, the CONCACAF Gold Cup is contested by the region’s best national teams. Since the tournament was inaugurated in 1991, the field has expanded from eight to 12 sides and the format has undergone multiple modifications all with the expressed objective of crowning a champion.

While Canada, Mexico and the United States gain automatic North American entry, representatives from Central America and the Caribbean are determined through qualifying competitions and a newly-introduced two-legged playoff.

For the first time, the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) decided to play its Central American Cup in the United States. Each of UNCAF’s seven members traveled north for the competition, which was played September 3-13, 2014, in four cities. Following up on its outstanding performances in the FIFA World Cup just months earlier, Costa Rica defeated Guatemala in the final, 2-1, for a record-extending eighth title. A crowd in excess of 41,000 was on hand at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to watch the Ticos rally from a first-half deficit as Bryan Ruiz and Juan Bustos struck for the deciding goals.

Llegó la hora. 12 selecciones pertenecientes a las distintas subregiones de la CONCACAF se verán las caras en la máxima cita del fútbol regional. Los países de la Asociación Norteamericana de Fútbol (Estados Unidos, México y Canadá) se clasificaron en forma directa, mientras que las naciones agrupadas en la Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (UNCAF) y en la Unión Caribeña de Fútbol (UCF) tuvieron que sortear con éxito sus respectivos torneos (la Copa Centroamericana y la Copa del Caribe) para poder acceder a la Copa Oro 2015.

La Copa Centroamericana 2014 otorgó cuatro plazas directas para la presente edición de la Copa Oro y se desarrolló por primera vez fuera de la región que comprende la UNCAF, en cuatro ciudades de los Estados Unidos. Guatemala earned a return to the Gold Cup after missing out in 2013. Midfielder Marco Pappa helped the Chapines to a perfect 3-0-0 record in the group stage, netting braces in games against El Salvador and Honduras. The Seattle Sounders star took home Golden Boot and Golden Ball honors. Third-place Panama booked a ticket to a sixth straight Gold Cup, while fourth-place El Salvador progressed for the ninth time overall.

Jamaica may not have qualified for the 2013 Gold Cup, but any lingering feelings of disappointment were put to rest thanks to a run to the 2014 Caribbean Cup crown at home.

The Reggae Boyz reclaimed their place at the regional summit by overcoming rival Trinidad & Tobago on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw in the final. The Trinidadians qualified for a second consecutive Gold Cup. Haiti may have edged Cuba in the match for third place, but both advanced to CONCACAF’s biggest stage as well.

After finishing fifth at the Central American Cup, Honduras was handed a Gold Cup lifeline in the form of a two-legged playoff with French Guiana, the fifth-place team from the Caribbean Cup. Despite being heavily favored, Honduras –a 2014 FIFA World Cup participant– was on the ropes following a 3-1 away-leg defeat. However, the Catrachos managed to rally in front of their home faithful at the Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula, just edging out their classy Caribbean opposition, 3-0, to secure their place at the 2015 Gold Cup.

La Copa del Caribe 2014, cuya fase final se desarrolló en Jamaica, clasificó a los cuatro equipos mejor ubicados del torneo: Jamaica (campeón), Trinidad y Tobago (subcampeón), Haití (tercer puesto) y Cuba (cuarto lugar) obtuvieron el pase directo a la Copa Oro 2015.

En una entrevista con CONCACAF Gold Cup Program, el español Albert Roca habla sobre su trabajo al frente de El Salvador y advierte: “La historia está para cambiarla”.

n May 2014, the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) officially presented Albert Roca as the new head coach of its men’s national team. While qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is the main priority, he was also tasked with improving the nation’s on-field infrastructure, including player development and coaching standards.

A proud Catalan, Roca’s most notable coaching achievements prior to signing on with El Salvador came during his five-year tenure as an assistant at FC Barcelona, where between 2003 and 2008, he was an instrumental part of the team’s success, working alongside world-class talents like Ronaldinho, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, and Lionel Messi under then-head coach Frank Rijkaard.

Roca continued as an assistant with the Dutch legend during stops in Turkey with Galatasary and the Saudi Arabia national team.

In an interview with CONCACAF Gold Cup Program, the 52-year-old Roca spoke candidly about his work with El Salvador and what it would take to achieve Gold Cup success:

Entre 2003 y 2008 se desempeñó como segundo entrenador en el club y trabajó con genios del balón como Ronaldinho, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández y Lionel Messi, a quien vio evolucionar hasta convertirse en el número uno del fútbol mundial. Su periplo laboral lo llevó, siempre como entrenador adjunto del holandés Frank Rijkaard, al Galatasaray turco y luego a la Selección de Arabia Saudita. Sus conocimientos y su vasta experiencia lo impulsaron a aceptar un nuevo desafío: conducir a El Salvador, cargo que asumió en mayo del año pasado.

Autor del libro El Proceso de entrenamiento en el fútbol, Roca tiene claro cómo es la evolución de un equipo, pero al arribar a San Salvador tuvo que encarar una ardua tarea.

Afortunadamente me encontré con un grupo de jugadores muy jóvenes con muchas ganas y mucha ilusión de hacerlo bien y llegar lejos en el fútbol”, explica el entrenador español.

-After taking the job as national team manager, what was your first objective in order to improve the team’s overall level? ¿Qué nivel encontró? ¿Hacia dónde encaró su trabajo con los jugadores salvadoreños?

- We started to introduce the players to the same methodology that we had always applied at Barcelona.

It’s important to me that our players understand football and the perspective that can be gained by playing with great intensity. It is not easy to apply the tactical concepts we’re trying to instill. It takes a lot of effort to pressure your opponents high up the field, keep close lines and buy into what the coach is trying to teach. It’s a difficult task, but an important one.

-Empezamos a introducir a los jugadores en la metodología que siempre hemos utilizado para entender el fútbol en el Barcelona, desde la perspectiva de una intensidad superior.

No es fácil aplicar los conceptos de presión alta, de líneas juntas, de buscar a nivel táctico sacar partido, porque durante la formación de estos jugadores quizás no se han desarrollado como uno quisiera.

-How would you describe your first months on the job? ¿Cómo fueron estos meses de trabajo?

- First, I had to focus on understanding what type of players I could work with. I had to look for the ones playing abroad and carry out a weekly follow-up of the ones playing domestically. It is really important that we have the right blend of domestic-based and international players in our pool. The more high-level players we have at our disposal, the better we can be as a team.

-Tuve que centrarme en qué tipo de jugador podía realmente aprovechar, buscar a los legionarios que estuvieran fuera del país y hacer un seguimiento cada semana a los que compiten en la liga local, para hacer una buena mezcla entre ellos. Un jugador bueno hace mejor a otro compañero.

-Having been drawn into a group featuring Costa Rica, Jamaica and Canada, what do you make of your Group B opponents? ¿Qué opinión le merecen los adversarios del Grupo B? - We prefer to focus on ourselves more so than our opponents, but I can tell you that we’ll be playing with very complicated and formidable rivals. In the 2009 edition, we were in the same group and, after defeating eventual semifinalists Costa Rica, we then lost back-toback games against Canada and Jamaica. So, in that sense, perhaps history is against us. But history is meant to be changed and now the circumstances are much different for us. We have a young squad that I believe is ready to compete with everybody.

-Tenemos una media que apenas superamos los 24 años y nos falta experiencia. Estaremos jugando contra rivales muy complicados, temibles, con los que la historia no nos juega a favor. En la edición 2009 se dio el mismo grupo y, tras vencer a Costa Rica, Canadá y Jamaica acabaron eliminando a El Salvador. Habrá que tenerlos muy en cuenta, pero la historia está para cambiarla. Son circunstancias muy variables, equipos diferentes, nosotros tenemos un equipo joven con el que vamos a competir a todos.

he United States is taking a three-pronged approach to the Gold Cup. It is looking to repeat as champion, equal Mexico’s record of six titles and avoid a playoff for a berth in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. If the Americans can lift the trophy after the final on July 26, those objectives will be accomplished.

In order to do that, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann will rely on a trio of veterans: midfielder Michael Bradley and forwards Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore, who have combined to appear in 23 FIFA World Cup games.

Missing from the U.S. mix will be retired Landon Donovan, the Gold Cup’s all-time leading scorer with 18 goals. Two years ago, he was the tournament’s jointtop scorer (5 goals) and Golden Ball recipient.

Defending champion United States, 2013 runner-up Panama, as well as 2014 World Cup participant Honduras, will offer Les Grenadiers a stern test.

Collat, however, will be able to select a roster from a pool of players on clubs from countries as close as the U.S. and as far away as Argentina, Malaysia and Russia.

“What I want the players to understand is that we are really able to compete with the other teams within the CONCACAF,” Collat added.

Haiti is coming off a third place finish in the 2014 Caribbean Cup.

The 23-year-old forward appears ready to take a prominent role in Haiti’s bid to join the CONCACAF elite. Belfort was Les Grenadiers top scorer during their run to a third-place finish in the 2014 Caribbean Cup with five goals, netting braces in wins over Barbados and Martinique.

In just six all-time World Cup Qualifying games, he has scored four goals. Belfort’s club career has already taken him to France and Cyprus. A big Gold Cup could lead to even bigger things.

El delantero de 23 años parece preparado para desempeñar un papel protagónico en Haití, que buscará unirse a la élite de CONCACAF. fifth-place finish in the 2014 Central American Cup was not what Honduras had envisioned just months after playing in the FIFA World Cup. That positioning, though, did not eliminate it from an opportunity to participate in a 12th CONCACAF Gold Cup. It was, in fact, a lifeline that led to a qualifying playoff against French Guiana. After falling 3-1 in the first leg on the road, the Catrachos stormed back for a 3-0 win at home, ensuring their return to the confederation’s premier competition.

The lessons learned from that experience led head coach Jorge Luis Pinto to say: “We don´t have to fear anyone.”

With a crop of young stars such as Andy Najar, Antony Lozano and Bryan Rochez emerging, Honduran opponents should proceed with caution.

lot of good things have happened over the course of Panama’s last 11 Gold Cup games. It has lost only twice, beat Mexico on a pair of occasions and conceded one goal or fewer 10 times. Those facts would seem to indicate that a tournament title may have been won along the way. That assumption would be mistaken for one reason. Both of the Canaleros’ losses came at the hands of the United States in two different Gold Cups. The Americans defeated Panama in the 2011 semifinals and 2013 final.

Now under the guidance of head coach Hernan Dario Gomez, the Panamanians are exploring ways to mix veterans with a talented group of youngsters ready to stake claims for spots in the starting 11. If that can be done successfully, a Gold Cup breakthrough is entirely possible.

LUIS TEJADA

THE STAR LA FIGURA

Tejada is Panama’s all-time leading scorer with 38 goals, including eight in the Gold Cup. Though currently in a second stint with Peru’s Juan Aurich, the 33-year-old forward’s considerable talents have taken him across the globe during a productive club career. He’s also made stops in Colombia, Mexico, the USA and the UAE. Tejada was the joint-top scorer in the 2005 Gold Cup (3 goals), the same year he was named MVP. He has appeared in four previous Gold Cups.

nly a year removed from battling the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup, Costa Rica is determined to demonstrate its staying power in the 2015 Gold Cup. In order to qualify for the CONCACAF event, the Ticos won a record-extending eighth Central American Cup title last September under the guidance of then-acting head coach Paulo Wanchope. The former national team star, who is Costa Rica’s second all-time leading scorer with 45 goals (including seven in the Gold Cup), now has the job on a permanent basis. His cause will be aided by a roster that is expected to include midfielder Celso Borges, a veteran of three previous Gold Cups; inspirational forward Bryan Ruiz, who netted in the Central American Cup final victory over Guatemala; and attacker Joel Campbell, who scored against Uruguay in last year’s World Cup.

BRYAN RUIZ

For more than 10 years, the forward has been a CONCACAF star. Since his international debut in 2005, Ruiz has contributed mightily to Costa Rica’s successes. His crowning achievement came at last year’s World Cup, scoring against Italy and Greece as the Ticos made a quarterfinal run. Ruiz, 29, won the 2004 CONCACAF Champions Cup with Alajuelense, before moving to Europe, where he’s played with Gent, FC Twente, PSV Eindhoven and Fulham.

Por más de una década, el delantero fue una de las estrellas de la CONCACAF. Desde su debut internacional en 2005, Ruiz ha sido una pieza clave en el éxito de su selección. En el Mundial de Brasil 2014 se lució con goles a Italia y Grecia y alcanzó los cuartos de final con los Ticos. We have a great amount of talent that is about to explode,” said El Salvador head coach Albert Roca, describing his team. The former FC Barcelona assistant was named head coach in May 2014, eagerly accepting the challenge. Since Roca took the reins, the Cuscatlecos have played eight games against seven teams that participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. El Salvador qualified for its ninth Gold Cup by virtue of a fourth-place finish in last year’s Central American Cup. Forward Rafael Burgos was the key performer, netting twice to become only the second Salvadoran to score in three editions of the tournament. He has never registered a Gold Cup goal, but will have help in 2015 as Darwin Ceren and Alexander Larin continue rising in stature.

El Salvador se clasificó para su novena Copa de Oro en virtud de haber finalizado en cuarto lugar en la Copa Centroamericana. El delantero Rafael Burgos fue la figura destacada, logrando anotar dos goles para convertirse en el segundo jugador salvadoreño en marcar en tres ediciones del torneo. Burgos sin embargo, nunca ha podido anotar en la Copa Oro, pero tendrá la ayuda en la edición 2015 de los Darwin Cerén y Alexander Larin para continúar aumentando su desempeño.

After winning the 2014/15 Hungarian title with Videoton, Alvarez will be targeting more success this summer with El Salvador. Since making his international debut in 2009, the 29-year-old has been a mainstay in the lineup. He has appeared in three World Cup Qualifying campaigns, two Central American Cups (1 goal) and a Gold Cup (1 goal). If El Salvador reaches the Gold Cup semifinals for the first time, Alvarez will be among the chief reasons why.

Luego de conquistar el título húngaro 2014/15 con Videoton, Álvarez espera seguir por el camino del éxito con su selección. Desde que debutó a nivel internacional en 2009, el jugador de 29 años siempre fue uno de los estandartes del equipo. Participó de tres Eliminatorias por Copa del Mundo, dos Copas de Centroamérica (1 gol) y una Copa Oro (1 gol). s part of the country’s summer of soccer, which includes hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Pan American Games, the Gold Cup is set to make its Canada debut. The Canadians will face Costa Rica on July 14 at Toronto’s BMO Field, hoping the home crowd lifts them past the group stage for the first time since 2009.

In 2000, Canada became the only country other than Mexico and the United States to win the Gold Cup. To reach those heights again, head coach Benito Floro is charged with crafting a roster that gives a nod to outstanding veterans, while incorporating eager youth.

Midfielder Atiba Hutchinson, 32, could be in line for his sixth career Gold Cup, while a pair 20-year-olds –forward Cyle Larin and midfielder Samuel Piette– look to establish their international credentials.

El español Benito Floro ha trabajado mucho para cambiar la mentalidad de los jugadores canadienses, que en los últimos tiempos se han ido acostumbrando a los malos resultados, incluyendo una racha de 16 partidos sin ganar que se cortó en septiembre de 2014. “Confiamos en nuestras posibilidades”, ha dicho Floro de cara a la máxima competencia de la CONCACAF. Luego de enfrentar a El Salvador y a Jamaica, Canadá deberá cerrar su participación en el grupo B ante Costa Rica, el rival más duro de la zona. The captain is a midfield cornerstone, whose career has taken him to clubs in five countries. At 34-years-old, de Guzman is looking to play a leadership role in restoring Canada to prominence in CONCACAF. He was named MVP of the 2007 Gold Cup, scoring two goals and guiding the Canadians to the semifinals. In 2005, de Guzman became the first Canadian to compete in Spain’s La Liga, after he joined Deportivo La Coruña from Germany’s Hannover 96.

hanks to overcoming Trinidad & Tobago on penalty kicks to win the Caribbean Cup last November, Jamaica enters the Gold Cup as a confident side. “Our game is based on fighting, passing the ball, counterattacking and working as a team. We know what we need to do to be successful,” explained Reggae Boyz head coach Winfried Schäfer. It will be interesting to see how the Jamaicans transition from the challenges of competing in the Copa América to the taking on CONCACAF’s best. One thing is certain, though, Schäfer is building a side that contains depth, possessing the ability to select from a deepening pool of players performing in the English leagues, as well as Major League Soccer. Six of the squad were named to the 2014 Caribbean Cup’s Best XI, including tournament joint-top scorer Darren Mattocks.

Jamaica’s captain has been a key member of three Caribbean Cup-winning squads, lifting the trophy in 2008, 2010 and 2014. Last year, he won MVP honors as the Reggae Boyz went undefeated over the course of four finals’ games in seven days. Austin, 30, has carved out a productive career for himself in Europe, playing for Norway’s Brann (2008-12) and Leeds United in England (2012-15). He has appeared in two Europa League matches and is still looking for his first-ever Gold Cup goal.

ousing Gold Cup motivation has never been an issue for Mexico. After all, it has contested seven of the 12 all-time finals, finishing victorious on a record six occasions. In the competition’s 2015 edition, though, incentive to reclaim the trophy – after losing it two years ago– has never been greater. The side that stands tallest on July 26 will earn a berth in a playoff against the 2013 champion United States for a place in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. In order to ensure being that team, Mexico is bringing a powerhouse roster north. Head coach Miguel Herrera will call upon two of the Gold Cup’s last three MVP’s –Giovani Dos Santos (2009) and Javier Hernandez (2011)– to make a clear statement of his intent. Carlos Vela is also expected to play in his first Gold Cup since 2009.

El entrenador tomó la decisión de armar dos selecciones diferentes para afrontar la Copa América (del 11 de junio al 4 de julio en Chile) y la Copa Oro, y confirmó que le dará prioridad a la competencia de la CONCACAF, que además podría permitirles jugar la próxima Copa Confederaciones. Para lograr esto último, deberán quedarse con el título y luego vencer a Estados Unidos en un partido desempate.

The 27-year-old forward has achieved incredible popularity thanks to his outstanding performances for Mexico, as well as Manchester United and Real Madrid. Hernandez has a flair for the big occasion, scoring in a pair of World Cups (2010, 2014), a Confederations Cup (2013) and a Gold Cup (2011). His ability to replicate that success in this year’s Gold Cup is key to Mexican hopes. He won 2011 Gold Cup MVP and top scorer (7 goals) honors.

hough Trinidad & Tobago’s respected place in the hierarchy of Caribbean football is unquestioned, its desire to rejoin the ranks of CONCACAF contenders burns strong. The Soca Warriors participated with distinction at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and it was believed that return trips to the event would be well within reach.

While things may not have gone as fully hoped, positive signs pertaining to the team’s future are plentiful. Trinidad finished as runner-up in the 2012 and 2014 editions of the Caribbean Cup and, in 2013, it advanced to the Gold Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2000. The current roster is comprised mostly of players established in Europe and those with clubs in Trinidad & Tobago that qualified for the 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.

From those on Trinidad & Tobago’s roster at the 2006 World Cup, forward Kenwyne Jones is the only one with a regular role in the current selection. The 30-year-old has enjoyed a productive career in the English leagues with numerous clubs, including Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Cardiff City and Bournemouth. He has netted twice in Gold Cup play and scored five goals in the Soca Warriors’ 2014 Caribbean Cup campaign.

fter advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Gold Cup and finishing fourth in the 2014 Caribbean Cup, Cuba is optimistic about taking the next step in its development. The cubans have made seven previous appearances, winning only twice in 20 all-time games. Two years ago, on the strength of a 4-0 triumph over Belize in the group stage, they reached the knockout rounds for the second time.

If the Leones del Caribe hope to do better this time around, attacker Ariel Martinez will be asked to play a key role. He was Cuba’s top scorer in the 2014 Caribbean Cup with two goals. As one of two Cubans to score in two different Gold Cups, defender and captain Yenier Marquez Molina, 36, will provide experience and leadership.

The offensive-minded Martinez is a difference maker for a Cuban side that will rely on his skill and guile in the Gold Cup. Two years ago, he made his presence felt in East Hartford, Connecticut, scoring three goals and leading Cuba to a memorable 4-0 win over Belize. The 28-year-old’s talents were in full bloom during the 2014 Caribbean Cup. Though the Cubans were unable to defend their regional title, Martinez aided the effort by netting against French Guiana and Haiti in the finals.

ot qualifying for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup may have dented Guatemala’s footballing pride somewhat. However, when former Comunicaciones manager Ivan Sopegno was named head coach in May 2014, the Chapines’ competitive prospects took an upward turn.

Sopegno guided the side to a runner-up finish in the 2014 Central American Cup, which qualified it for the 2015 Gold Cup. Guatemala took a 1-0 lead in the final against Costa Rica, but the Ticos rallied for a 2-1 win.

Despite the setback, midfielder Marco Pappa captured Golden Ball and Golden Boot honors (4 goals). Veteran striker Carlos Ruiz also became the first guatemalan to find the back of the net in three different editions of the competition.

Like his beloved Guatemala, Carlos Ruiz is back. The forward initially closed the curtain on his international career following a 3-1 loss to the United States in a World Cup qualifier on October 16, 2012. Slightly less than two years later, he agreed to return and help the Chapines qualify for the Gold Cup. The 35-year-old is Guatemala’s leader in appearances (112 caps) and tops its scoring table (57 goals). He has steered Municipal to two straight runner-up finishes in Guatemala and was the joint-top scorer in the 2014 Apertura with 12 goals.

Highlighting their efforts was the ethereal play of goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who had been tremendous throughout the tournament and his performance against the high-powered Dutch was again exquisite.

It was then, with a bit of cruel irony, that Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal would make the game’s deciding tactical decision: replacing his first-choice goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen with Tim Krul in the waning moments of extra time, giving the Netherlands a six-foot-five presence in goal for the deciding penalty shootout. Krul was fabulous and the Dutch penalty-takers clinical. Costa Rica’s journey was soon over, but the Ticos held their heads high as they walked off the field at the Arena Fonte Nova.

The confident Wanchope believes his defense will be ready and that his team has what it takes to succeed.

Success at the Gold Cup would be a fitting reward for a nation that has risen up the international ladder with supersonic speed. And while the Ticos can no longer be considered the underdog they were in Brazil, fans everywhere will want this Cinderella story to continue, hoping midnight never comes.

LOS SALVADORES DE HONDURAS

Cuando parecía que los hondureños se quedaban afuera de la Copa Oro, aparecieron dos jóvenes que sacaron la cara por La Bicolor. Con sus goles en el desempate frente a Guayana Francesa, Andy Najar y Anthony Lozano sellaron la clasificación para el conjunto de Jorge Luis Pinto.

Najar brilla en el Anderlecht de Bélgica y varios clubes grandes de Europa quieren contar con sus servicios. Lozano tuvo una prematura experiencia en España, pero volvió al Olimpia hondureño y encontró la continuidad que necesitaba. A los 22 años, ambos son claves en la ofensiva de Los Catrachos.

COSTA RICA: NUEVA GENERACIÓN

El gran presente de Costa Rica está apoyado en varios hombres de experiencia, pero también en dos jóvenes de

23 años: Joel Campbell y Yeltsin Tejeda.

Campbell, que tuvo un gran Mundial 2014, se desempeña en el Villarreal de la Liga española, aunque su pase pertenece al Arsenal de Inglaterra. Tejeda ya lleva más de 30 partidos internacionales con los Ticos y actualmente juega en el Evian de la Ligue 1 francesa.

En México, la cuota de sangre joven la aporta Jesús Manuel Corona Ruiz. A los 22 años, el Tecatito atraviesa un gran momento en el Twente de Holanda y ya dio sus primeros pasos con el Tri. POR EL ORO EN LA COPA ORO Make no mistake, the current rivalry between the United States and Mexico is one of the fiercest in all of international soccer. And while the venom and vitriol is ever-present, the their Gold Cup clashes often represent the region’s crescendo of competitive intensity.

The 2015 Gold Cup should be no different as Mexico aims to reclaim the cup, while the Stars and Stripes will be attempting to match the Tricolor’s record of six Gold Cup crowns.

TO THE VICTOR, GO THE SPOILS LO QUE ESTÁ EN JUEGO While regional glory alone would make the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup a showcase worth watching, this year’s event also carries with it the opportunity to qualify for both the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, as well as the 2016 Copa America Centenario.

Along with the prestige that comes with being crowned as the top team in the region, the winner of this year’s event also earns the right to square-off with the United States (2013 Gold Cup champion) in a playoff to decide CONCACAF’s Confederations Cup representative. With a second straight title, though, the United States would book its ticket to Russia outright.

Of equal importance is the opportunity to earn a place in next year’s Copa America Centenario. While four teams have already qualified — the United States (host), Mexico (invited), Costa Rica (Central American Cup champion) and Jamaica (Caribbean Cup champion) — there are still two advancement paths for the remainder of the Gold Cup field.

First, if the winner of the Gold Cup is not one of the four aforementioned qualifiers, that team will earn direct qualification to the Centennial event. The remaining place would then be determined via a playoff between the two highest ranked teams not yet qualified. However, if either the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica or Jamaica win the tournament, then a fourteam playoff field will be constructed to determine the final two qualifiers.

IS IT THE CARIBBEAN’S TURN? ¿LA HORA DEL CARIBE? At no time during the Gold Cup’s rich 24-year history has a Caribbean team hoisted the trophy. While Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago have continually represented their region with distinction — each earning trips to the tournament’s semifinals — it remains that no Caribbean-based squad has ever advanced to a Gold Cup final.

While the road may again seem perilous, reaching the 2015 Gold Cup final in Philadelphia is not out of the question for some of the Caribbean’s finest. Six-time Caribbean Cup champion Jamaica looks particularly ready to make a mark, having enjoyed a solid spell of recent results heading in to the tournament. Under the direction of German-born manager Winfried Schäfer, the Reggae Boyz will feature numerous players currently plying their club trade in top European leagues. Trinidad & Tobago also could be poised to spring a Gold Cup surprise, having made tremendous improvements in recent years under manager Stephen Hart. While the absence of Kevin Molino is sure to be felt, the Soca Warriors could prove a tough test throughout the competition. Fellow Gold Cup competitors will also be wary of Haiti and Cuba, both of which should be considered tournament dark-horses. While the Grenadiers have all the makings of a formidable opponent, Cuba -- the 2012 Caribbean Cup champion-- will be making its eighth Gold Cup appearance.

On July 7, exactly 24 years to the day that the United States prevailed over Honduras on penalty kicks to become the first CONCACAF Gold Cup champion, the 2015 edition will launch in Frisco, Texas. And, once again, the U.S. will be one of the competing teams. Although they played in the 1990 World Cup, the Americans’ success in the Gold Cup a year later was somewhat unexpected. After toppling Costa Rica 3-2 in the last Group B game, a stunning 2-0 semifinal victory over Mexico followed. Those matches ignited regional rivalries that continue to flourish today. Though the Gold Cup has produced only three different champions in 12 editions, there have been no shortage of thrills and special themes.

A TRICOLOR TRIO

Disappointment resulting from the 1991 Gold Cup setback clearly motivated Mexico as it went on a remarkable run of three straight titles, the only team to accomplish that feat in tournament history. In 1993, the Tricolor had the pleasure of lifting its first trophy at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, topping the U.S. 4-0 in the final before more than 130,000 fans. The Mexico/U.S. supremacy came to an end, if only shortly, in 2000, when both were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The Americans fell to South American-guest Colombia on penalty kicks, while Mexico dropped a 2-1 decision to eventual-champion Canada after extra time thanks to Richard Hastings’ “golden goal” in the 92nd minute. The Canadians then edged Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 in the semifinals, before reigning in the final, 2-0, over the Colombians.

En 2003, México volvió a sonreír en el Estadio Azteca luego de una apasionante final contra Brasil (otra vez invitado), definida con un “gol de oro” de Daniel Osorno.

Sin embargo, Estados Unidos demostró que estaba decidido a disputarle la hegemonía al conjunto mexicano y se coronó tanto en 2005 (triunfo ante Panamá) como en 2007 (victoria 2-1 frente a México). El Tri no quiso ser menos y respondió de la misma manera: con un bicampeonato. En 2009, se alzó con el título luego de un aplastante 5-0 frente a Estados Unidos; en 2011, repitió tras vencer nuevamente a su clásico rival, esta vez por 4-2.

La última edición de la Copa Oro quedó en manos de los Estados Unidos. El equipo norteamericano sumó su quinto título, y quedó a solo uno de México, el máximo ganador del torneo. Since that surprise in 2000, seven additional editions of the Gold Cup have been disputed. The U.S. has won four of them, while Mexico acquired three more pieces of silverware, fueling a rivalry that has developed into one of the world’s best.

In 2002, the Stars and Stripes celebrated the championship after defeating Costa Rica 2-0 in the final. The following year, Mexico stood tall on the Estadio Azteca pitch after Daniel Osorno’s “golden goal” vanquished Brazil, 1-0.

Mexico’s reign was short-lived as the U.S. asserted itself in the next two events. The Americans were crowned champion in 2005, knocking off Panama after a 120 minutes of scoreless soccer. In 2007, Benny Feilhaber’s 73rd minute goal lifted the U.S. past Mexico, 2-1, as they met in the final for a third time.

Not to be outdone, the Mexicans responded in a similar fashion, claiming two straight titles themselves. A 5-0 win over the U.S. in 2009 set the record for the largest margin of victory in a Gold Cup final. In 2011, Mexico fell behind 2-0 to the Stars and Stripes before netting four unanswered goals to claim a sixth prize. The 2013 Gold Cup saw the U.S. return to the peak, edging Panama 1-0 in the final for its fifth championship. Twenty-four years and 12 champions: Who will write the history in 2015?

ike language, politics and tradition, the game of soccer is an important part of a nation’s identity. While the players on the field are charged with task of representing an entire population, it is often those cheering them on that provide the best indicator of a country’s true sporting culture. The songs they sing, the emotions they express and the genuine brotherhood known only to those who share their passion.

José, Ryan, Diego, Yosvany and Oscar are five of those fans, all of whom will be cheering on their respective teams at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. They will be wearing the colors and waving the flags of Costa Rica, the United States, Guatemala, Cuba and Mexico. More than just their own countries, however, these five fans also represent what it means to be a true supporter: they are passionate, loyal and willing to do whatever it takes to see their team succeed.

“Costa Rica qualified for the 2002 World Cup on a rainy night in San Jose,” recalls José Perreaguirre. “My friends and I all had other commitments, but there was no way we were going to miss that game. It was an incredible night.

Costa Rica beat the United States and I vividly remember my friends and I crying, draped in the Costa Rican flag, signing the national anthem at the top of our lungs as we celebrated our nation’s FIFA World Cup berth.”

While extraordinary, Jose’s experience is a shared one.

On more than one occasion, under the soft amber glow of streetlights in Havana, Yosvany Hernández –a Cuban national team supporter– has also set aside other obligations in order to watch his national team play. Superstitiously, Hernandez always wears his Industriales baseball cap when Cuba is in action. It’s his lucky charm.

“To be there as your national team raises the trophy is something special!”

Cada seleccionado tiene un estilo propio y ese modo de vivir este deporte se traslada también a los aficionados, que en cada país vibran de una manera diferente. Sin embargo, el fútbol genera una comunión tan fuerte que en las más distantes geografías hay sentimientos comunes, lazos de hermandad que solo puede comprender quien ama a sus colores.

José, Ryan, Diego, Yosvany y Oscar son cinco hinchas que durante julio vibrarán con la Copa Oro. Lo harán con las banderas de Costa Rica, Estados Unidos, Guatemala, Cuba y México, pero bien podrían ser de algún otro país de la CONCACAF o del mundo, como cualquier otro hincha que ha cometido locuras por fidelidad a sus ídolos.

“Venciendo a Estados Unidos en San José, Costa Rica se aseguraba el pasaje al Mundial 2002, pero mis amigos y yo ya teníamos compromisos. Ronny se escapó del trabajo, Andrés rompió una cita y yo falté a un examen en la universidad... ¡Luego tuve que reponer con un dictamen médico! En el estadio llovió desde las 3 de la tarde hasta las 10 de la noche, nos mojamos de pies a cabeza; sobre el final, la TV nos enfocaba y teníamos que taparnos con las banderas para que no nos descubrieran. Al final lloramos juntos cantando la Patriótica Costarricense, celebrando el pase al Mundial”, cuenta José Parreaguirre. Algo parecido le ocurrió en La Habana a Yosvany Hernández: “Por acompañar a la Selección en el estadio Pedro Marrero perdí un derecho de examen, justo de Análisis Matemático, con lo difícil que es”. Lo hizo con su gorra de béisbol de Industriales, la cábala que siempre lo acompaña.

Todas las supersticiones son válidas para apoyar a los colores amados. “Me pongo la camiseta que Clint Dempsey usó para el centenario de la Selección de EE.UU., que tiene un escudo majestuoso, y brindo con una cerveza americana”, cuenta Ryan Youtz, un estadounidense de Omaha, Nebraska, que alienta al equipo de las barras y las estrellas desde que tenía 9 años, cuando su país organizó la Copa del Mundo 1994.

En todos los casos, la niñez es el primer punto de contacto con esta pasión. Así lo testimonia Diego Ortiz, guatemalteco de 21 años: “Tenía apenas 4 años cuando Juan Carlos Plata marcó ante Brasil para el 1-1, en 1998. Imborrable. Años

Of course, charms and superstitions are nothing new in the world of soccer. Something Ryan Youtz, an American from Omaha, Nebraska, can attest to.

“For every game, I wear my Clint Dempsey U.S. Centennial jersey,” says Youtz. “I love that badge.”

For most fans, the emotional attachment between a supporter and their team is cultivated at a young age. Diego Ortiz, a 21-year-old from Guatemala, is a prime example.

“I was just four years old when Juan Carlos Plata scored against Brazil in 1998,” recalls Ortiz. “It was unforgettable. Years later, I was able to attend a hexagonal qualifier with Trinidad & Tobago. I was there as Guatemala won, 5-1. Now, as I make my traditional game-day walk from the Obelisk in downtown Guatemala City to the Mateo Flores Stadium, I think about those moments. I will never forget them. They are a part of me.”

In Mexico, a young Oscar González Garduño fell in love with El Tri as a seven-year-old, watching the 1994 World Cup on TV. “I was at school,” said Garduño. “I remember the excitement. Together with my classmates, we watched the victory over Ireland. It was unforgettable.”

Garduño’s greatest memory, however, dates back to the 2003 Gold Cup. “That was my first time ever watching a game at the Azteca,” he said. “I remember being there, in our great footballing cathedral, watching as Mexico defeated Brazil on an incredible goal from Daniel Osorno. To be there as your national team raises the trophy is something special.”

Another charming quality of the international game resides in its unique ability to bring a country together in support of a common cause.

That is exactly what Perreaguirre experienced while watching the Ticos as a boy in 2001.
