USA DEFEATS TRINIDAD & TOBAGO; PANAMA TIES COSTA RICA 12.01.2005: The USA began the 2005 CONCACAF Under-20 Final Round Qualification Group A with a 6:1 victory over Trinidad & Tobago at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, while in the other game, Panama held Costa Rica to a 1:1 tie. Edward Gaven scored three times for the host USA (1-0-0, 3 Points), while Freddy Adu and Will John each had a tally and Trinidad & Tobago's Radhanfah Abu Bakr also added an own goal. Kevin Crooks scored the only goal for Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points) in the loss. The last time the stars & stripes scored six goals in a CONCACAF U-20 Qualifying match was against the soca warriors (6:1) on 9 August 1998 in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. USA QUALIFIES; COSTA RICA ELIMINATES TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 14.01.2005: The USA advanced to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship after defeating Panama 2:0 in a Group A match of the CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Qualification at the Home Depot Center in Carson, while in the other encounter, Costa Rica eliminated Trinidad & Tobago win a 2:1 win. Second half goals by Freddy Adu and Jacob Peters on in the 55th and 88th minutes, respectively, led the USA (2-0-0, 6 Points) to ending Panama’s (0-1-1, 1 Points) eight-game unbeaten streak in CONCACAF U-20 Qualification. With a game remaining (on 16 January), the stars & stripes have secured one of the two berths in CONCACAF’s Group A to the FIFA World Youth Championship from 10 June – 2 July 2005 in the Netherlands. This will be the USA’s fifth consecutive (1997-2005) and 10th overall appearance at the FIFA World Youth Championship. These marks equal the CONCACAF records by Mexico, which also had fifth consecutive berths (1977 to 1985) and 10 overall FIFA appearances. In an earlier Group A encounter, Costa Rica (1-0-1, 4 Points) took a 2:0 lead over Trinidad & Tobago (0-2-0, 0 Points) with goals from Franklin Chacon and Alonso Salazar in the 8th and 62nd minutes, respectively. USA WINS GROUP A; PANAMA PROGRESS TO FIFA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 16.01.2005: For the first time in history, the USA finished in sole possession of first-place in a CONCACAF Under-20 Final Round Qualification Group after defeating Costa Rica 2:0 for the 2005 Group A title at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Sunday. Chad Barrett and Danny Szetela scored in the 2nd and 37th minutes, respectively, to lead the stars & stripes (3-0-0, 9 Points), who had already qualified to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands, in the win over ticos (1-1-1, 4 Points), which ended their eightgame unbeaten streak in CONCACAF U-20 Qualification. The result also qualified Panama (1-1-1, 4 Points), as the second team from Group A, on goal difference over Costa Rica (0 to –1) after topping Trinidad & Tobago (0-3-0, 0 Points) 3:1 in an earlier Group A encounter at the Home Depot Center. Luis Gallardo opened the scoring for the canaleros in the 12th minute of the first half and then Alvaro Salazar increased the lead to 3:0 with two goals in 71st and 75th minutes, respectively, in the second half. Marcelle Francois got the soca warriors on the board with a goal in the 77th minute, but Panama held on for the victory. This is Panama’s second consecutive qualification to a FIFA World Youth Championship after competing for the first time in the event held at the United Arab Emirates in 2003.
