COSTA RICA & USA OPEN BEACH SOCCER TOURNAMENT WITH VICTORIES 13.09.2006: The USA and the host Costa Rica opened the 2006 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship (FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006 – Qualifier Costa Rica) with victories over Canada and Jamaica, respectively, at Punta Leona in Puntarenas. A spirited crowd of 950 spectators saw Zak Ibsen, Yuri Morales and Brendon Taguinod all scored in the 3:0 win for the USA over Canada in the opening match of the inaugural CONCACAF tournament. “To win this game (vs. Canada) today was very important,” said USA’s Beach Soccer Technical Director Roberto Ceciliano. “Now this doesn’t mean we are the favorites in the tournament because all the teams are equally strong and this event will be very close to call.” In the second match at Punta Leona, three goals by Danny Jhonson led Costa Rica to a hard-fought 8:6 triumph against Jamaica. “I believe it was a good game from the start,” said Costa Rica’s Technical Director Edson Soto. “The concentration was a key factor for us winning this match, because as we were leading by two goals in the second period, we began to celebrate as if we won the match and resulted in us trailing at one point. In the end we were able to turn the match around in our favor and held on for the victory.” Match #1 CANADA – USA 0:3 (0:1) (0:1) Brendon TAGUINOD 9’; Yuri MORALES 28’; Zak IBSEN 35’

"At this moment we have six points and if we win the next match then we'll have nine and secure a berth into the World Cup." In the second game, three goals from Ricardo Villalobos weren’t enough for Mexico as they lost 6:4 to Canada. Eric Munoz scored twice for Canada in the victory. CANADA ELIMINATES JAMAICA; COSTA RICA DEFEATS MEXICO ON PENALITIES

15.09.2006: Canada eliminated Jamaica from the 2006 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship (FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2006 – Qualifier Costa Rica) with a 7:3 victory at Punta Leona in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Kyle Yamada scored three times and Ian Carlos Diaz added two more for Canada in the win over Jamaica. "Despite the victory, this definitively was not an easy game," said Canada’s Technical Director, Ross Onagro. "The game tomorrow against Costa Rica will be the toughest, because they are a good squad that will take you on one-on-one.” In the day’s other encounter, Costa Rica defeated Mexico 1:0 on penalties after playing to a 4:4 draw at the end of regulation and extra time. Jeffrey Chavarria, Danny Jhonson, Hans Morales and Andres Villegas all scored for the ticos, while Jose Davila, Antonio Gonzalez, Jesus Lopez and Jose Luis Navarrete answered for the tricolores in order to send the game into extra time. After a scoreless extra time, the penalty kick shootout had Costa Rica’s goalkeeper save Ramon Villa’s kick, while Mexico’s Genoni Martinez’s shot missing the target. After, Christian Ovares kick went wide from the goal, Jeffrey Chavarria scored the game-winner for the ticos. "We were expected to win and first of all I want to make something really clear, that I am not hapy with this result as we obtained two points but the one we lost may cost us in the final run," said Costa Rica’s Technical Director Edson Soto. "The idea was to be more dynamic and instead we were passive. The Mexican goals caught us always off guard." CANADA & USA ADVANCE TO FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP 2006 16.09.2006: The USA and Canada advanced to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Rio de Janeiro 2006 after defeating Mexico and the host, Costa Rica, respectively, at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship. After heavy rains hit the venue of Punta Leona during the last 18 hours making the pitch unplayable, the day’s CONCACAF Beach Soccer event were moved to Playa Jaco in Puntarenas. The standing room crowd of 547 witnessed the USA progress to their second consecutive FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup after defeating Mexico by a score of 7:4. After Benyam Astorga opened the scoring for the USA with just four seconds into match, making it the fastest goal at the inaugural CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship, Yuri Morales led the stars & stripes offence with two goals, while Anthony Chimienti, Francis Farberoff, Zak Ibsen and Raphael Xexeo all scored in the win. “My team didn’t play as well as I would have liked, but thank God we qualified,” said said USA’s Beach Soccer Technical Director Roberto Ceciliano. “It means a lot to be taking part in a (Beach Soccer) World Cup, because after months of hard work and preparation this is a great reward.” In the other encounter at Playa Jaco, two goals by Kyriakos Selaidopoulos and another each from Ian Carlos Diaz, Damir Deco Jesic, Sipho Sibiya and Kyle Yamada helped Canada to a 6:4 victory over Costa Rica. “The work that we have done was very beneficial and one of the important things that has helped us is that we enjoyed what we did and enjoyed competing in this tournament,” said Canada’s Technical Director, Ross Onagro. “I can not imagine what it will be like to play in Rio de Janeiro, at the (Beach Soccer) World Cup I only promised my players that we will do a good job and look at what we have accomplished.” Match #7 USA- MEXICO 7:4 (2:1) (5:2) Benyam ASTORGA 1’; Zak IBSEN 12’; Francis FARBEROFF 18’; Anthony CHIMIENTI 20’; Raphael XEXEO 22’; Yuri MORALES 26’, 27’ – Jesus LOPEZ 7’; Ricardo VILLALOBOS 13’, 31’; Genoni MARTINEZ 28’
