Question of the Day Stan Sias - National Manager

WOW! Did you see the January Advertiser?

Plated Truss Industry at Simpson Strong-Tie

If you are anything like me, you were delighted with the new format and content of the January issue. Congratulations to Anna and Thom on producing a first rate resource periodical. I was delighted to see new articles by Carl Schoening at Eagle Metal Products, Sean Hubbard at Square 1 Design and Manufacture and Joe Kannapell at MiTek USA, joining myself and the other monthly columnist. The issue was packed with ads for new and used equipment, jobs and job seekers and other information to give the Component Manufacturers the facts they need to do the job they have at hand today. Heck, the value of Matt Layman’s Lumber Market Strategy posting could easily add thousands of dollars to your bottom line annually. What’s next? Hopefully Thom and Anna will keep up the great work and reach out to our sister trade associations and customer groups and see if we can get them to participate too. Maybe we could start an exchange with the National Association of Home Builders and the National Frame Builders Association and get monthly updates on their projects and initiatives, needs and desires. Hopefully we will get more of the suppliers to the Component Manufacturing industry to tell us all what they’d like us to know about their products, services and industry workings. Is the future of component manufacturing in 3D printing? What about cross laminated timber in place of open studded wall panels? Could we be doing more for our Builder friends? How can we help? What about other parts of the construction industry? Could we be supplying pre-cut or pre-assembled components for their use, at cost much lower that they have today? Should we ask?

Let me pause to congratulate and commend the American Wood Council for their first submission in this month’s Advertiser. I’m excited for their continued involvement and look forward to helping establish a real connection between them and the Component Manufacturing industry. Welcome aboard, AWC! One thing is for certain; talking to one another has never hurt anyone. Open honest communication is the basis for trust and trust is the backbone for mutually beneficial relationships. I personally hope that we can get monthly installments from many, if not all of our partner associations, councils and customers. This would serve as an excellent communication tool and a place where CMs, suppliers, customers, code officials and standards developers can converse openly about whatever issue or event, new product launch or need, code issue or update may be on their minds. Let’s talk about the aging workforce and the need to work together, and harder, at developing our replacements and future generation of CMs. We are not alone in this battle. Every related industry is experiencing similar challenges. How do we make responsible forestry, transportation, development, building construction and component manufacturing sexy for the generations now in high school, post-secondary education, the military or those looking for laterin-life careers? Opening our doors for plant tours to all of these groups is one way, but surely talking about our experiences with others facing a similar plight is another. Collectively, we should be able to work towards building sustainable solutions. The same can be said for working with the lumber companies on supply, quality and design values…working with the fire service on sprinklers, fire assemblies and building safety…and working with the builders on efficiency, sustainability, durability and permanence. Together we can do great things. Thanks for reading, S Ps. Let’s also congratulate and commend the TPI Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for it’s thoughtful selection of Professor Don Bender, Washington State University, as the new academic member of TAC. Don replaces Steve Cramer, University of Wisconsin, who resigned in 2014. Welcome, Don! PHONE: 800-289-5627

Forum

Fighting the Good Fight In January, I had the privilege of once again attending SBCA Chapter meetings. Having participated Director of Communications and Marketing in meetings for many years as WTCA/SBCA staff, it was Component Manufacturing Advertiser. funny to think I was now calling in as an SBCA member. In the past, I spent 13 years working to support members, and now I was a member too! Attending the meetings took me right back to conversations I had over the years and problems we addressed together. Anna L. Stamm

Finding the Right People The conversation that struck the deepest chord with me happened at the Alabama Chapter meeting. The members began discussing how difficult it is to recruit workers into our industry. Everyone agreed, you can give presentations at high schools, tech schools, and community colleges, but more times than not you feel like there is no reward. You try to entice these students with facts about good jobs in a terrific industry, and you wonder how you can get through to them. But sometimes, there is a connection. Sometimes, you do reach your audience, if only for a while.

1997 ASI B500 Component Saw 1997 ASI B500, 5-blade component saw, features semi-automatic user interface with backup mechanical indicators, grouped functions such as automatic blade alignment for chords or webs, automatic centerline adjustment of nominal board size, safety fencing, shaker pan scrap system, digital read outs and push-button adjustment controls. 480 volt, 3 phase. $19,890 FOB ON Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com

Making the Connections The conversation reminded me of Bob Becht. As we were all sad to learn, Bob passed away in November. In his heyday though, he was a force to be reckoned with in South Florida. I remember that, for a time, he had made a good connection with the Indian River Community College. He had made that link that everyone wants – a connection with an instructor that leads to a room full of students who are actually paying attention during a conversation about truss design. The catch, however, is what happens to everything in life – it’s only temporary. The whole process is cyclical – whatever grows in popularity will eventually fade in popularity. What’s important though is trying. Whether or not it’s a success at any given moment is not the point. You have to keep trying to make the connection, because the value is well worth it when you succeed.

1997 Timbermill 620 Pro SSD Timbermill 620 Pro single-sided digital, model 6-20 Pro SSD. Six heads cuts lumber from 2x3 through 2x12, 4x2 lengths from 13” to 20’ including four-angle floor truss webs from 19". "Pro" model features faster angulation movements and faster carriage speeds with soft-start technology and powered movements with single-side setup and digital readouts. Includes set of spare blades, drag-chain waste conveyor with incline, and all available spare parts. 480V 3ph. $25,990 FOB IA Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com

Coming Together in the Chapter The wonderful thing about chapters is that they can bring together competitors and unite them for a common goal. A room full of people struggling to stay in business can still discuss the day’s issues and offer solutions toward their mutual progress. The solutions may or may not work, but at least they’re trying. At least sometimes they hit the winning combination, connect with the right instructor, educate the right inspectors, agree to the optimal plan of attack. In chapters, you may not get along with everyone on every issue. You may not be the kind of friends who would ever socialize in another setting. That reminds me of Bob Becht too. Through all of his years in the business, Bob worked with folks who really liked him as well as folks who really did not. But that happens to all of us – some people connect with us and others learn to tolerate us. No one can deny, however, that Bob was a powerful figure as a business leader, as a Chapter President, as Membership Committee Chair, as WTCA President. ur industry is made up of an assortment of players from small family owned framing crews, to medium sized family corporations and even publicly traded corporations. Each and every corporation has their place in our industry. Diverse entities bring a specialty that is advantageous to their specific business model. Square 1 Design & Manufacture Inc. is a small family owned corporation with family values. Our staff strives to build the best equipment, provide the best service, all at a realistic margin to keep us moving forward. I often field calls asking about our relationship with Klaisler Mfg. Corp., if my last name is Klaisler, how we compare to Klaisler. Honestly, I feel sense of pride, and a sense of loss each and every time I am confronted by this circumstance.

Klaisler Mfg. Corp. was my family’s business; producing one of the first finish rollers ever used to roll steel connector plates into a truss. In 1965, my Grandfather, Elmer K. Hubbard was passed up for a promotion in Evansville, IN. Frustrated with his current situation, he 1983: Elmer Hubbard installing a new roof truss system began researching a company and an emerging market nearly 200 miles away. Eventually, selling everything his family owned, moving his wife and three children north to Indianapolis, Indiana. For decades, Klaisler filled a niche market, customizing equipment for many truss plants throughout the world. The global financial crisis was devastating to Klaisler Mfg. Corp, just like it was to many of our friends in the building components industry. In 2008, our family permanently closed Klaisler Mfg. Corp. In 2009, I continued to receive countless phone calls and emails requesting assistance for Klaisler equipment. This led to the decision to start Square 1 Design & Manufacture Inc., where we continue the tradition of specializing in custom equipment for the building components industry. We continually strive to improve our products and service, maintaining the values entrenched into me by my grandfather. Square 1 Design & Manufacture Inc. has the complete list of Klaisler Mfg. Corp. parts, manuals and equipment. In the coming months, we invite you to visit our new website complete with Klaisler parts, manuals and electrical schematics. Adverti$er What Happened to the Fun? Don’t Forget! You Saw it in the

So, here I sit with plenty of work that needs to be done. I began thinking of when I first started in the industry, then becoming involved in the national association, then becoming the western distributor of involved. The one constant in all of that “doing” was that as a group we had FUN. Our mantra was that we worked hard and we played hard……sometimes a little too hard making those early morning association meetings challenging. But, the take away was always terrifically valuable. The ideas and problems discussed and solved at the bar following the association meetings were always extremely valuable and insightful. It seems as the recent economic downturn hit we all got really serious about business, as we should have. We were working hard to keep businesses afloat and remain profitable. We were doing more with less. All of this hard work was at the expense of fun. Before the downturn we worked hard, but we had fun doing it. During and since the downturn we have continued working hard, but we just have not embraced the fun….yet. The work place has to be more than a place where you serve time each day. It has to have more meaning to the employees than earning a paycheck. You want your employees to be “invested” in the business. The best way is to try to make it a little fun in the process.

Wood Truss Systems 765-751-9990 www.woodtrusssystems.com

While the association has a lot on its plate, most of it really serious work, it still has to be fun to attend the meetings and participate in the solutions to the problems. The quarterly meetings have become less well attended than in the past. Partly to do with the downturn, but also because it has become less engaging to those that used to attend; less fun. I can remember when the hotel bar of the meeting venue couldn’t hold all of the attendees. We did a lot of really good work in that less formal and less structured environment. Ideas were fleshed out with “lubricated input” from everyone in attendance. Many, many great ideas came from those late night brainstorming sessions. It made everyone want to attend the next meeting. It was FUN! I am starting a movement to bring the fun back to the association meetings starting with the March meeting in Fort Worth, Texas. We will be holding court at the end of the day’s sessions. Bring your ideas and problems, but more importantly bring the fun. There is a small group that has been trying to revive the fun. We are now going to take it to another level. We will be working hard to move the industry forward in key areas, but we are going to have fun doing it. There will be a group at the bar every evening trying to resolve issues that went unresolved during the association meetings. Listen closely during the meetings and don’t be afraid to speak at the meeting and, more importantly, at the bar following the meeting. Nothing will be off limits. Speak your mind and have fun doing it. You may get poked and prodded in a friendly manner, but your input will always be absorbed. In the bar forum, the best idea wins. That is part of what makes it fun. You get to hear ideas from attendees that live all over the country. They may have the same problem you do. They may have already found a solution and they will share it. It is fun. The sharing that happens during the after meeting has surprised a lot of first time attendees. The group is always great and never at a loss for ideas and opinions on any issue. Especially one guy from Jacksonville. He has opinions on everything….and, sometimes we laugh our heads off during his dissertations. But, it is always fun. I could tell many stories of past meetings, but what happens at quarterly meetings, stays at quarterly meetings. Like the guy that evaporated for 3 days at the South Padre Island quarterly meeting. We were all worried, but he made it to the last meeting and survived. A living legend to this day. I look forward to meeting everyone in Fort Worth. Bring your fun. If it is your first meeting to attend or the first in a long time, mention this little story and I will happily buy your first glass of “idea lubricant.” Come make your own memories, solve problems and engage in the industry. We are all better when everyone participates and when everyone has fun. Let’s bring the fun back! Do you think that some of your competition Todd Drummond Consulting www.todd-drummond.com has a competitive advantage because their sales teams are processing projects via the Web on tablets? If they are able to start and/or update any project information, find the current stage 7:42 of AM any task and also review any project’s schedule, all without calling someone on the phone or waiting on an e-mail, then the answer is yes, they do have a big advantage over you if you are not able to do these as well. Ask your sales team and other employees how much time is wasted during any given day because they are searching for information that is not at their fingertips. Most employees waste a lot of time every day trying to contact someone to get simple answers such as a reliable scheduled delivery date. And yes, many of your competitors have figured out that with modern technology, your existing staff (not just the sales team) can be a whole lot more productive if everything is live on the cloud (Web) and accessible with any user rights limitations via any Web browser (computer, tablet or cell phone). So how do you implement a cloud-based communication system to fix this information breakdown that your company may be experiencing? Well, there are multiple ways with different levels of needed money and effort.

2005 Alpine AutoMill SC Saw Five-blade, servo-controlled computerized saw, sets up in 2 to 19 seconds and downloads from a network or by using a touch screen for ease of operation. The all-too-common method is hiring expensive coders and/or IT gurus who claim, “I can get all of that done for you in-house in about 6 months to a year. No problem!” If you speak with anyone who has gone the coding-in-house route, you will hear a common-repeated phrase of the number 3. Whatever cost and amount of time they tell you, multiply it by 3 and it will be somewhere close to that number to have something resembling what you requested. And the other thing you must keep in mind is that all IT/coders are mechanical gurus who know how to create and fix the coding, but very few understand easy-to-use user interface issues. Another version of the same IT gurus is that they will use a hodgepodge of different software programs semi-bundled together to solve different tasks. In the end, both these methods end up with hard-to-use software not doing everything it was meant to provide, and only the IT/coder knows how to keep everything running, which is a formula for disaster. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel and hire expensive coders and IT gurus. Nor do you need to do away with all of your current project processing forms so that the transition can be much easier to move to the Web. Imagine how much easier it would be if you were to use your existing forms that everyone is already familiar with and have those same form designs as the user interface that is displayed in Web browsers. Once any information is keyed into the system on one of the forms, it propagates throughout the project processes so that there is no multiple inputting of the same information.

When Do You Cull Lumber at the Table?

From worst-case scenarios to less obvious examples, do you have general guidelines that will help you make informed decisions? For example, when faced with lumber defects on the table, do you know how the builders in your plant will proceed? More importantly, are they being supplied with the information they will need to make informed decisions? Take, for example, the question of culling lumber.

Most fabricators would not even consider using the bottom chord shown in the first photo. The real question is: do your builders know how to cull lumber? Do they know when to bump up the plate size and when to replace the truss member? There is no set rule to the situation; however, since TPI regulations allow some defects, the question is how much defect is allowable and when is a defect unacceptable. The technical response is that “it depends on the plate tolerances” and the other factors determining the plate size. The plate size via the truss design software calculates the necessary tooth holding, orientation of the connector plate. The larger the fabrication tolerance, the more flexibility the builder has for locating the connector on the joint. Still other factors must be considered in order to achieve a suitable truss. Considering the joint in the photo, in this case the wane area does not contribute tooth holding and should not be counted as acceptable tooth holding. This particular plate fails this application because adequate tooth count is not available in the chord. In this instance, it would appear that using a larger plate would have resulted in an acceptable joint. So how does the truss builder out in the shop determine what they should do? Consider these guidelines: If there is a defect of up to 25% of the face of the member in the plated area, 1. then it a good idea to upsize the plate just to be covered. Keep in mind that, if plates are designed oversized, this rule may not be necessary. If there is a defect of 25% to 50% of the face of the member in the plated 2. area, then it is imperative that the plate be evaluated and a larger plate should be used. This can be done by upsizing the plate based on the percentage of defect area in the member affected. In the example above, a single plate size each way covers the 1 x 4 inch area. Here a 3 x 4 is substituted with a 4 x 5. If there is a defect of 50% or larger of the face of the member in the plated 3. area, then the member should be culled and replaced with a suitable replacement. Of course these decisions need to be made by the builder at the table in a quick manner. Some situations, such as critical plates, may not allow any defects. That’s why it’s important to give the table enough information. Most plate software providers have shop output that shows minimum tooth count for every joint of the truss. Its good information to have if your lumber has a great deal of defects at the plated area. A little paper saves throwing away an expensive piece of lumber already cut and at the table ready to be used. Providing accurate information at the table in addition to thoughtful guidelines will help ensure that the best results are achieved in practice. Self-directed learning program provides guidance for safe and sustainable wood construction

February 1st, 2016 #09199 Page #34 MISC.

By: Robert Glowinski, President & CEO of the American Wood Council

Construction is rebounding, and with it the need to invest in education for safe and sustainable structures is more important than ever. As manufacturers of wood products, many in our industry have the opportunity to directly engage with those on the front lines of construction who are often looking for information on proper and code-compliant wood building design. Industry representatives should steer them to the many industry resources that have been developed specifically for their use by the American Wood Council (AWC), APA The Engineered Wood Association, Canadian Wood Council, WoodWorks and reThink Wood, among others. Often, builders, designers and building officials are in need of continuing education units (CEU) or just want to explore and learn proper wood design at their own pace. As an organization that is closely involved in the development of building codes and standards to ensure safe wood construction, AWC offers a complimentary, self-directed education program to address these topics in wood design. Thirty courses are currently available from AWC for CEU credit, all of which are certified by the American Institute of Architects, International Code Council or the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, including courses on: •

AWC Standards – A background on standards developed by AWC and referenced in the International Building Code, including the National Design Specification®, wind and seismic provisions, and connections.

Building Codes - Includes the latest design considerations in recent editions of the International Building Code, International Residential Code and International Wildland Urban Interface Code, along with code updates, fire protection requirements, California wildfire compliance and proper residential deck construction.

Design Considerations - Highlighting specific design considerations in wood-frame construction such as connection solutions, seismic-resistive design, shear walls, wind-resistive design and durability.

Green Building - Covers the evolving definition of green building and its relationship to sustainable building materials, covering green building, wood product Environmental Product Declarations and meeting energy objectives.

Materials - Introduction to various wood products including expanded options for traditional and engineered wood technology and building solutions. Topics covered include characteristics of wood, traditional and engineered wood products, crosslaminated and other mass timber products, and new trends in wood construction.

In today’s building codes, wood's structural performance makes it an outstanding option for a broad range of applications — from repetitive framing common in many smaller structures to larger framing systems utilizing mass timber. For AWC, a full list of online courses and complimentary registration for the self-directed learning program is available at www.awc.org.

FASTENERS SIMPLIFY WIND-UPLIFT RESTRAINT Door & Stair

Building homes and structures with a continuous load path in regions of the country susceptible to high winds can now be accomplished from inside the structure with easy-to-install fasteners. Strong-Drive® SDWC Screws Truss/Rafter-toPlate Connection and Stud-to-Plate Connection

Tried-and-true metal connectors, fasteners and anchors are traditionally used as a system to connect the roof, floors and foundation together. But now there’s another choice. Simpson Strong-Tie offers two structural fasteners designed for wind-uplift restraint: the Strong-Drive® SDWF Floor-to-Floor screw and the Strong-Drive® SDWC Truss screw. There are several key benefits to using structural fasteners for continuous load path connections, including: • • • • •

Fast installations (significantly fastener than traditional methods) No predrilling No interference with finish materials Floor-to-floor framing alignment is not critical Ease of installation: The SDWC and SDWF install from inside the structure, eliminating exterior work on upper stories

Wind-Uplift Restraint

For illustrative purposes only. See installation specifications.

The Strong-Drive SDWC Truss screw provides a stud-to-bottom-plate or stud-to-top-plate connection and can be used to fasten trusses and rafters to top plates. It is designed to simplify continuous load path connections at the roof and foundation. The SDWC is available in a kit that includes 500 screws, two driver bits and two metal installation guides. The SDWC screw is code compliant (IAPMO-UES ER-262) and is for interior use only. The Strong Drive SDWF Floor-to-Floor screw attaches upper and lower walls together from the top, spanning the floor system to create a strong connection between floors. When used with the TUW take-up washer, the SDWF screw simplifies the floor-to-floor winduplift restraint connection. The patented TUW take-up washer plays a key role in the long-term performance of the SDWF Floor-to-Floor screw when installed between the screw and the sole plate of the upper floor. As the structure settles because of shrinkage and construction loading, the threaded portion under the head of the screw ratchets up through the tabs of the TUW. The interlock between the tabs of the take-up washer and the threads under the head of the SDWF screw prevents the screw from sliding back under load. This provides a simple yet reliable means of shrinkage compensation for up to 3 ⁄4" per story. The SDWF screw is code compliant (ICC-ES ESR-3046), as is the TUW take-up washer (ICC-ES ESR-2320) – both are for interior use only. When used together as a system with anchor bolts at the foundation, the SDWC and SDWF screws are a reliable, safe and economical solution for creating a continuous load path and resisting wind uplift. The evolutionDon’t of Steel Forget! Truss Technology You Saw it in the Adverti$er

Light gauge steel trusses have been around a long, long time. Steel trusses offer the same advantages that make light gauge steel framing generally appealing for a significant segment of the light frame construction industry. Light gauge steel does not burn. It does not serve as a food source for mold. It won’t warp. Termites have no use for it. As a consequence, steel trusses have found their way into a significant portion of light commercial construction…a portion that is growing. THe Cee For many years, the dominant method for building trusses was the use of the back to back cee. Cee section stud material was available through a nationwide system of production and distribution. Stock lengths of commodity studs could be purchased through distribution. Engineering was typically done by structural engineers and involved a lot of manual work. Likewise truss production involved a lot of manual work – fetching material, cutting members on a chop saw, setting up for assembly, etc. It was an arduous process, but it got the job done. Other challenges included awkward shipping as the trusses were not “in line”. Also, roof framing and sheathing were not symmetric.

PROPRIeTARY TRUSS Over time, inventive entrepreneurs developed clever proprietary material with which steel trusses could be made. The steel had more bends to give it compressive strength and generally most such trusses could be built in a single plane, unlike the back-to-back cee. Many shapes made their way to market, but few are widely used today. Automation made the difference in determining survival. Today, only a few shapes are widely used and a major reason is the software that is used to design those trusses. The combination of effective shapes and design automation have narrowed the field to a few players. This technology has been effective. However, a large

February 1st, 2016 #09199 Page #38

part of proprietary truss construction remains manual in nature – just as it was with back to back cees. Fetching inventory, measuring, cutting, marking of pieces, and setting up jigs are for the most part manual processes that require training, significant labor time and cost, and introduce the possibility of error. NeXT STeP The technology exists to develop a system that includes design automation, material that allows for in plane truss construction, and that also automates most of the manual processes that exist today in dominant truss systems. At Keymark, we have developed powerful steel truss software that automates the design of steel trusses out of cee – like material that can be built in plane. Production data for webs and chords is downloaded to proprietary roll formers. Pieces are not generated as stock lengths; they are cut to length, automatically marked to match up with each other, and pieces are notched and given pilot holes so they slide together and automatically jig.

The result is a system that requires little training in the shop, a process that has quality control built in, and a substantial reduction in labor cost. There is no need to buy roll formers as job specific material is generated on our roll formers and sent to fabricators for assembly. The system is called KeyTruss and is available today from Keymark. Mid-Winter Lumber Rally

Order File, Forecast & Strategy ¥ Producer Order Files... Mills are out of orders. Some are negotiating price for sales, others are trying to wait out the buyers. Winter weather is certainly slowing job sites, however a month of dealer inventory liquidation has created holes to fill. ¥ Forecast... The lumber market is under pressure, at the same time some buyers are getting concerned about being under stocked. Prices should weaken this week and next. Three weeks from now, regardless of weather, buyers will be feeling the urgency of covering over- exposed areas. ¥ Strategy... Get your house in order. Begin to scale-in buy this week and wrap it up the week after, covering needs through mid April to avoid restocking at the top. Mills will likely be counterable early in the week. Counter $10 and buy it.

Snow, ice and cold sent contractors on eastern U.S. job sites running for cover the end of last week. That is not the case country wide, however it is a possibility in 80% of the continental U.S. now through the end of February. One can only ponder, in the depths of winter, how could our lumber market possibly rally? It's all about inventory comfort level in relation to the next six weeks, not the next six days. After a month of inventory liquidation, contractor yards are uncomfortably lean. Replenishment momentum will build in February. The mid-winter lumber rally is not a new bull market, rather the last up leg of the winter bull market. It may not make a new high, nevertheless it should be expected to relieve the downward momentum. The mid winter lumber rally is worth investing in. Looking Forward...ml

Summary Looking at price action last week we see the down moves were much stronger than the up moves....increasing downward momentum. Midweek we identified the most likely next support to be the low $230's. We almost made it on Friday. Rebounding stock markets provided temporary support on Thursday, then Friday's winter storm took all the warm fuzziness back out of the trade. The weekly chart, top, shows a long term bull market correction with support in the low $230's. The March daily chart, below, shows an approach to the bottom of the channel. MRCI's historical work suggests a reversal low intersection this coming week $231-232. That same historical picture projects a higher high on this last leg up. That would give us a minimum $35 rally during the first two weeks of February. That would be nice, eh?

Don’t Don’t Forget! Forget! You Saw it in the YOU S AW IT IN THE

Safety First! Safety Meeting Topics From State Fund CA.

Safety and Substance Abuse Dont Mix

Drug use and alcohol consumption are normally considered personal issues. They only become an employers concern when they affect safety and worker performance. Drug and alcohol abuse cost employers through high absenteeism and sick pay. Abusers hurt themselves and their families if they lose their job as a result of their actions. If they are fired or cannot function on the job, the company loses the services of an experienced worker. Those under the influence of drugs or alcohol cause friction in the work group, lower morale and work efficiency, use poor judgment that results in bad decisions, and give the company a poor public image. Certain times of the year individuals should be especially aware of their alcohol and drug consumption. In the winter months when the days are dark and dreary, some people experience a sense of depression or seasonal affected disorder (SAD). They may turn to drugs or alcohol in the mistaken belief it will relieve the symptoms of the disorder. The holiday season, with increased social gatherings or added financial stress, leads some people to misuse drugs or alcohol, especially during this year of millennium celebration. Those who over-consumed alcohol or drugs yesterday and are hung over today may feel out of sorts, still trying to recover, and may not give all their attention to the safety aspects of their job. Their judgment and safety performance becomes impaired and the likelihood of an accident or injury to themselves or coworkers increases. Sometimes a personal or health problem persists. In most cases, the problem gets resolved. But if it is not resolved some people turn to alcohol or drugs. Even some prescription drugs can interfere with job performance. The individual cannot think clearly or becomes distracted. This can lead to accidents. Irresponsible consumption of drugs or alcohol not only jeopardizes the safety and health of the worker and coworkers but it can impact the employers business and affect the future of all families involved.

Controlling Floor Vibration Home buyers naturally take for granted that the floor system in a new house is safe and complies with the building code—and rightly so. But home buyers also have expectations for their floors that are unrelated to safety or the building code. In particular, many home buyers are aware of their floor’s “vibration” in response to foot traffic, which some people find annoying or disturbing. In Canada, the building code includes limits on floor vibration. But U.S. codes don’t regulate floor vibration. So most U.S. builders design for deflection only—typically by holding deflection due to live load to a maximum of L/360 (where “L” is the floor joist span), or perhaps a more restrictive L/480.

Unfortunately, however, code compliance does not automatically equal customer satisfaction. Some components of a floor system that greatly influence the floor’s response to foot traffic—such as the presence of a ceiling, floor sheathing, supporting beams or girders, and partition walls—are not captured in the live-load deflection analysis required to satisfy the code. To make things even more complicated, floor vibration is highly subjective: A floor that feels fine for one person may seem annoying to another. For example, the buyer who previously occupied a slab-on-grade residence may have a different performance expectation from the buyer who has been living in the upper levels of an apartment complex. Additionally, prob-

Above is one example (for TJI 210 series joists) drawn from the output of the TJ-Pro Ratings System. Increasing joist depth or increasing sheathing thickness improves the floor response. Increasing both at once leads to a very high rate of customer satisfaction. But as the live-load deflection numbers indicate, reducing vibration requires that joists be much stiffer than required by code.

lems not related to floor vibration, such as squeaks or sound transmission between rooms, often create the perception of poor vibration performance. Subtle changes in floor usage or joist spans may also result in floor performance complaints. One common problem area is a PHONE: 800-289-5627

kitchen with an island, where a homeowner may notice rattling dishes or ripples in a glass of water. A change in joist span at a bay window may also be a trouble spot, even if the difference in spans would seem to be slight. A short stiff member will make the longer spans feel softer.

Laboratory research at Virginia Tech has shown that customer perception of floor vibration is related to the frequency of the vibration. Using test floor systems built in the lab, researchers found that people were particularly sensitive to vibrations of about 8 or 10 Hz (cycles per second). At higher fre-

quencies, vibrations were perceived as less annoying. Field investigation in real homes confirmed that occupants were not bothered once the vibration frequency went above 14 Hz. To help designers and builders avoid complaints and callbacks, Weyerhaeuser (which manufactures Trus Joist TJI wood I-joists) has developed a floor analysis system called the TJ-Pro Ratings System. The software includes algorithms that correlate floor vibration with customer satisfaction by modifying elements a designer and builder can control, including joist depth, joist span, joist series, on-center joist spacing, floor sheathing thickness, and ceiling drywall thickness. The software also correlates floor vibration with customer survey data, allowing the app to assign a customer-perceived quality rating to any floor design. The higher the TJ-Pro Rating, the greater the percentage of customers who will find the floor satisfactory. Rather than learn by trial and error—by building homes and then responding to callbacks—the user of this software gets a whole set of “knobs to turn” during the design phase. By knowing the home buyer’s expectation of floor performance in terms PHONE: 800-289-5627

of a simple probability number, builders and designers can reliably design floor systems that are likely to satisfy the customer. The table shown on the facing page provides an example. The base case is a floor system designed to meet the building code, with 11 7/8-inch joists at four different on-center spacings and code-compliant floor sheathing for those joist spacings. The next three cases show the results from turning two of the available knobs: joist depth, and floor sheathing thickness. As you can see, increasing the joist depth greatly improves the customer satisfaction rating. But you can achieve a comparable degree of improvement by increasing the sheathing thickness, without increasing the joist depth. And if you increase both the joist depth and the sheathing thickness, you can achieve a level of customer satisfaction approaching 100%. The deeper I-joists and thicker subflooring panels in this improved floor system may add to the materials cost. But labor savings could counteract some of that up-charge. APA - The Engineered Wood Association is currently promoting floor designs using deeper wood I-joists at wide spacings with thicker sheathing, calling

the system a “premium floor assembly.” As APA points out, such a floor requires framers to handle fewer pieces of lumber, and uses fewer tubes of subfloor adhesive and fewer fasteners than a floor with lesser joist depth and closer on-center spacing. But keep in mind that the floor joist assembly may not be the only factor that affects floor vibration. Researchers at Virginia Tech reported that a floor with very good performance on its own may show unsatisfactory performance if it is supported by a girder or a partition wall that doesn’t perform up to the same level. Framing workmanship can be a factor: Where joists are attached to the face of a girder, small gaps between the joists and joist hangers can affect the whole system’s vibrational response to footfalls. By the same token, if multi-ply girders are not built up with sufficiently long nails or structural screws to distribute the impact forces to all plies of the girder, the whole girder-and-joist assembly may vibrate at a bothersome frequency because of the flexible nature of the poorly connected outside ply. Supporting wall construction can be a similar quality issue. If mid-span supporting walls under a floor aren’t sheathed, the “give” in the wall studs may have a vibrational response frequency that creates a subjective quality issue. Applying drywall to those studs will brace the studs against lateral vibrational movement; but gaps between wall plate members could also allow a noticeable vibration response. In the case of a kitchen with an island, blocking may also be helpful to ensure that the joists evenly support the load, in order to mitigate any differential deflection and resulting “tipping” motion of the island. These quality issues may not be predicted even by a sophisticated tool like the TJ-Pro Ratings System. So to avoid callbacks and problems, it’s still important for builders to pay attention to their own field experience and to adjust their construction quality measures accordingly. Tomo Tsuda, P.E., P.Eng., is the Manager of Product Applications and Building Codes at Weyerhaeuser, based in Federal Way, Wash. Frank Woeste, P.E., Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor of Sustainable Biomaterials, Virginia Tech University.

New Framing Screw Offers Code-Approved Alternative to Nails posted 1/18/16

SDWS Framing Screw

MiTek Acquires Sales Simplicity CHESTERFIELD, MO – January 5, 2016 – MiTek Industries, Inc. (“MiTek”), a diversified, global business supplying a wide range of engineered products; proprietary business management and design software; and automated equipment sold into the broad construction and industrial end markets, announced today that it has acquired Sales Simplicity Software, headquartered in Chandler, AZ. Sales Simplicity Software is the widely acknowledged leader in CRM, sales automation, dynamic content management, and reporting for the home building and real-estate sectors. “The acquisition of Sales Simplicity Software is yet another step that MiTek is taking to enrich its offering of operations workflow solutions for residential production builders,” stated Tom Manenti, Chairman and CEO of MiTek. “With this acquisition of Sales Simplicity Software, along with our 2015 acquisition of BuilderMT, and previous acquisitions of Simpad and Kova, we offer a truly unique and expansive selection of software for production builders. Sales Simplicity Software has an excellent user-base among production builders and integration into BuilderMT, which MiTek will further strengthen. MiTek will continue to offer solutions and resources to our customers that are second to none.”

Pleasanton, Calif. – Simpson Strong-Tie, the industry leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, has expanded its Strong-Drive® line of structural fasteners to include the SDWS Framing screw, a multipurpose fastener designed and load-rated for replacing nails in framing and remodeling applications. This versatile fastener offers a new alternative to 16d, 10d and 8d nails for contractors and do-it-yourselfers in areas too constrained for the use of a hammer or where there is a need for the superior holding power and pull-out resistance of screws. In addition to its many general uses, the Strong-Drive® SDWS Framing screw is code-listed under IAPMO UES ER-192 and meets 2009 and 2012 IRC and IBC code requirements for common wood framing applications. "This is such a versatile screw and can be used for so many construction applications that we think it will become the 'go-to' screw for contractors and DIYers alike," said Dr. Edward Sutt, vice president of Fastening Systems. "We see the SDWS Framing Screw as not only a superior alternative in many framing applications, but also as a great solution for indoor and outdoor projects. It's easy to drive, fast to install and offers vastly superior holding power than nails." Key features of the Strong-Drive SDWS Framing screw include: • SawTooth™ Type-17 point with serrated threads that provides fast installations with reduced torque and no pre-drilling • Specially designed head countersinks easily to provide a clean, flush finish • Quik Guard® coating provides extra corrosion protection in exterior applications and preservative treated wood. • T25 bit holds the 6-lobe recess tightly, reducing cam-out and head stripping. In addition, the SDWS Framing screw is available in commonly used 2 1/2" and 3" lengths for extra versatility. For more information, visit strongtie.com/sdwsframing.

As part of this acquisition, Tom Gebes, the current president of BuilderMT, will also become president of Sales Simplicity and work to tighten the integration between the two companies, as they move toward working together as one system. Customers will still be able to purchase BuilderMT or Sales Simplicity as stand-alone solutions. Sales Simplicity will remain in Chandler, AZ, with no changes to employee base, and Barry Forbes, the founder of Sales Simplicity, will retire in early 2016. About Sales Simplicity Sales Simplicity is the creator and marketer of leading sales automation, content management, lead management, eMarketing and reporting management tools for new single-family, semi-custom and custom homes; condo, multi-family, realtor and senior living providers. The Last Word...

The Importance of Measuring Our Work

To safeguard our work future, we need to know, and more importantly show, what we have accomplished. Rarely are we fooled about the value of our work. But how we feel may not accord with our boss’s feelings. That’s where measurement enters the workplace, to provide an unbiased appraisal. Or not? Metrics have become so common – inside and outside our work lives – that they may seem uncontestable. Pro athletes are measured nearly “to death”. Phone reps are judged on the number of calls. And truss people must meet board feet objectives. That truss metrics have migrated from whiteboards updated daily, to digital displays updated continuously, seems to reinforce their infallibility. That they are deceptively easy to understand lends them further credibility. What if we end up on the “wrong side” of a metric? Time to do our homework and find a better metric. In the plant, “man-minutes” may beat “board feet” per interval. Or in the design office, “numbers of truss designs” may be better than “sales dollars” per time period. But gather the facts first before contesting a “proven” system. Especially if you are very experienced in your job, you are likely receiving the most complex, least quantifiable work. And you may need to supplement metrics with subjective measures to support your value. Don’t assume that you know how your boss feels. Too often, I have failed to ask, “How do I measure up?” Too often I have waited until an annual review when I should have asked often. And too often have I assumed that just working hard proved my worth, short of any measureable evidence. PHONE: 800-289-5627
