We Resolve To Help It’s the start of a very special New Year here at Compers News, and we’re going to try even harder to find the biggest and best prizes for our readers.

Happy New Year everyone! As you’ll already have seen from this month’s front cover, 2013 is an important milestone in the history of comping magazines – and here at Compers News, we’re proud that we can trace our own heritage right back to that very first edition of Competitors’ Journal exactly one hundred years ago. When we were wading through our extensive archive for the special feature beginning on page 4, it struck us how much comping services have changed over the decades – and not always for the better! So we thought that, in this centenary year, it’d be the perfect time to go back to basics and focus on the things we’ve always done best.

a single Take a Break or Chat coupon as 12 separate comps… some will bump up their total with easy-to-find, low-value comps… some will count the comps featured on an associated website as part of their own magazine total... we could go on! If we followed that logic with Compers News, we’d be able to claim over 5,000 comps each month! That’s counting all the comps here in the magazine, on Chatterbox, and those listed free of charge on our sister website www.ThePrizeFinder.com.

When it comes to the crunch, numbers really aren’t important. You WIN! WE RESOLVE TO ALWAYS TELL YOU ABOUT THE VERY BEST FREE COMPING SERVICES.

As a comper, you’re probably bombarded with invitations to join comper ‘alliances’ costing hundreds of pounds (gulp!), paid-for websites and niche services (we’ve even heard of one that charges you for the pleasure of comping in your coffee or tea break!) – but why not keep things simple and save your money? Why pay for Facebook comps when there are hundreds listed FREE and all in one place at www.theprizefinder.com/facebook? And what’s the point of wasting good money on a list of ongoing ITV comps when it’s all there for FREE at www.theprizefinder.com/tv-competitions? Some other sites may charge a hefty subscription fee for their online services, but why pay over £100 per year when you can find exactly the same competitions at www.theprizefinder.com – all completely free of charge. In fact, at the time of writing we have over 4,000 FREE online competitions on our sister site… a subscription to Compers News, and FREE access to www.theprizefinder.com, really IS all you need!

WE RESOLVE TO LISTEN TO YOUR SUGGESTIONS, AND TO TAKE YOUR FEEDBACK SERIOUSLY.

Written BY compers FOR compers… it’s one of the easiest claims that a comping service can make. But here at Compers News, it’s absolutely true. Everyone who contributes to our pages is a current, active comper – with well over a century of experience between us at the last count! So, we know comping (and compers!) inside out. But if there’s ANYTHING you think we could do differently, then please let us know. Compers News really is YOUR magazine, so while we can’t promise to take every single suggestion on board, we’d still love to hear from you.

100 Years of Winning Advice

Britain’s first comping newspaper went on sale exactly 100 years ago, and Compers News is proud to be part of that very first publication’s family tree. Editor Steve Middleton takes a look through the archive and uncovers a fascinating history…

1913: The Birth of Competitors’ Journal

Competitions started to become popular in the UK towards the end of the 19th century, and it wasn’t long before every newspaper and magazine worth its salt was giving away huge prizes. In those days, the law meant that every contest was skill-based and one of the most popular competitions of the era was John Bull magazine’s ‘Bullets’ phrase-making game which launched in 1912. When the famous author Edgar Wallace met with a journalist friend, Arthur Charles Findon, to discuss their weekly Bullets entries, they instead found themselves talking about an idea for a publication aimed at competitors. This would have news of all the main newspaper and magazine competitions together in one place, and would “advise, assist, encourage and inform” readers on the tasks and prizes on offer. Their weekly newspaper – Competitors’ Journal – launched in early 1913 and was an immediate success.

1920s: After the Great War

Arthur C. Findon left his editor’s post to serve in the Great War, and on his return from service he sold his interest in Competitors’ Journal to a publisher friend called Freddie Poke. Almost immediately, the format changed to that of a general interest magazine and the name also changed to ‘Everybody’s Weekly and Competitors’ Journal’ – with the ‘Competitors’ Journal’ part of the title becoming ever smaller with each passing week!

1930s: Findon Returns

Another general interest magazine similar to Everybody’s Weekly was called The Leader, and in the early 1930s Arthur C. Findon took over as editor of this rival magazine and sent its circulation soaring. And the reason for this success? Well, Arthur couldn’t quite forget his interest in comping and introduced a section at the back of The Leader based on his original Competitors’ Journal concept. The success of Bullets in particular had seen a huge number of similar competitions and crosswords spring up, and thousands of people were now buying The Leader for its expert guidance.

1940s: Competitors’ Journal Reborn

As yet another World War intervened and the fashion for general interest magazines began to wane, both Everybody’s Weekly and The Leader were eventually sold by their publishers and merged into other titles. Which left Arthur C. Findon without a job and the Competitors’

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SMALL PRINT

As well as being a renowned crime writer, Edgar Wallace was a prolific comper who used his writing skills to try to win the weekly Bullets competition and other similar word games of the day. He was also a regular contributor to Competitors’ Journal when it launched. Despite the vast earnings from his books, Wallace found it difficult to finance his lavish lifestyle and he turned to gambling and dubious get-rich-quick schemes. In 1905, before the launch of CJ, he persuaded the Daily Mail to run a promotion that he himself had conceived and which brought together his love of writing, comping and business opportunities. To tie-in with the publication of his latest book ‘Four Just Men’, he came up with a ‘guess the murder method’ competition. But Wallace made a serious error. He failed to include a clause in the competition rules restricting payment of the prize money to one winner only, and it was only after the competition had closed and the correct solution printed as part of his book that he realised he was legally obliged to pay every person who had answered correctly. Shock turned to horror as the number of correct entries continued to inexorably rise, and the owner of the Daily Mail was furious when he had to loan Wallace over £5,000 (around £2million today) to cover the prize fund and protect the newspaper’s reputation. Luckily this didn’t put Edgar Wallace off comping though, and just a few years later he helped to launch Competitors’ Journal. The moral of the story then though remains just as true and important for compers today. Always read the small print!

CJ found itself in the hands such unlikely bedfellows as Boxing News, TV21 of a small publisher which also became involved comic and Men Only! CJ’s reputation was also in the then brand-new genre of monthly puzzle at its height amongst promoters and handling magazines. Things became a lot calmer, and CJ houses, and “winners names will be published in could look forward to several years of stability –

albeit with a much lower profile and circulation than before. This WAS the 70s though, and even CJ couldn’t escape the attitudes of the era. Previously serious ‘order of merit’ photo comps became an excuse for many newspapers and magazines to show pretty girls in various states of undress, and ‘Meet Our Gorgeous Readers’ became a regular weekly feature in CJ! “Are you a gorgeous reader? Send us your picture and win £2 if we use it!” Which all sounds a bit more exciting than our current Winners Gallery, I suppose…

1980s: Fortnightly Fun

As circulation continued to decline, the paper found itself in a vicious circle of falling sales and rising costs, and the number of pages was down to just 12 a week. So by 1980, the decision had been taken to go fortnightly and to adopt a magazine-style size and format. Just one year later, CJ found itself with a serious rival for possibly the first time ever. Competitor’s Companion was launched in 1981 with a huge amount of publicity and a massive marketing budget. Following the success of CC, its publisher followed with Prize Draw News a couple of years later. The comping magazine marketplace was becoming very crowded indeed!

Even CJ wasn’t immune from the attitudes of the 1970s!

The major downside of this change was the loss of CJ’s renowned football pools service. Longer publishing deadlines meant that forecasts could no longer be included in the magazine, and suddenly one of the most accurate and respected pools services in the UK was no more. Much like the loss of Bullets in the 1960s, no-one could have guessed how many readers subscribed to CJ simply for the pools advice – and once again the magazine’s circulation saw a sharp downturn almost overnight. This time, there would be no recovery. Competitors’ Journal was merged with both Competitor’s Companion and Prize Draw Winner over several months beginning in late 1992. The remaining editorial features would find a home in the pages of CC, while the main

Although they were still the two biggest comping magazines on the market, several changes of ownership had seen Competitor’s Companion and Prize Draw Winner lose some of their edge by the turn of the century. They failed to adapt when new comping trends and technologies came along, and new interactive comping services and forums began to appear on the then-fledgling internet. One of the earliest of these new services was the Chatterbox comping discussion forum, and it was so successful that a monthly magazine was launched in early 2001 to complement the service. That magazine was Compers News, and it was an instant success. A couple of years later, Accolade Publishing acquired Competitor’s Companion and Prize Draw Winner and set about returning them to their former glories. In 2005, Compers News became part of the Accolade portfolio meaning that the UK’s biggest comping magazines and online services were now together in one place.

Winning Prizes

March 2011

Some of the best prizes in comping are the ones that money can’t buy. Janice Papworth dropped us a line to tell us about a very special day last September where she COULD have ended up a million pounds she wishes now that she’d paid richer. Bet attention when the football was on! Reading Compers News last spring, I spotted an interesting competition that offered the chance for ten winners to play a special football-the Wants To Be A Millionaire’ med ‘Who . The competition appeared on various beers and ciders during the World Cup and offered a potential £1,000,000 prize… trouble was, I knew nothing about football! However, the Compers News listing made it clear that all ten winners were guaranteed a minimum £1,000 cash prize and entry was by a simple low-cost phone call, so I gave it a go. I was amazed when, in September, I heard that I was one of the ten winners. I’d been chosen to go to the world-famo us Elstree Studios to play Who To Be A Millionaire on the Wants real TV set with Chris Tarrant himself! On the day itself we had a rehearsal where the hardest bit was climbing into the main chair - it‘s a lot higher up than it looks! It was then time to play the game for real and meet Chris Tarrant. I didn’t make it into the main chair (no surprises there!) but after the game Chris had his picture taken with all of us and, as one of just two women, gave me a big hug! He was very pleasant and took time to talk to all the contestants . We were then presented with for £1,000 – apart from the our cheques main winner who walked away with a massive £150,000. He certainly knew his football!

As the publishers of Competitor’s Companion and Prize Draw News spent a huge amount of money convincing people of the merits of comping, other publishers began to try their luck in the market – with varying degrees of success. Before long, compers were spoilt for choice – but it was a choice that couldn’t be sustained. Prize Draw News merged with Everyone’s a Winner to become Prize Draw Winner, and at around the same time the publishers of CC and PDW acquired Competitors’ Journal. Despite relaunching the magazine in full colour, CJ simply couldn’t compete with the circulation figures of its stablemates and so the decision was taken in early 1992 to change the frequency of CJ to a monthly publication.

Companion on skill and purchase-necessary comps, with Compers News taking a more CJstyle ‘pro-comper’ approach to the comping scene generally), but as it became more difficult to categorise comps along traditional lines, the magazines began to duplicate content. The decision was therefore taken in early 2011 to merge Competitor’s Companion, Prize Draw Winner and Compers News into a single monthly magazine to deliver a complete, consolidated comping service. History had come full circle, and once again UK compers would have a single comping title where they could find news, listings and advice together in one place.

2013: Going Forward

When Arthur C. Findon and Edgar Wallace launched Competitors’ Journal exactly one hundred years ago, they could never have imagined how “the hobby of entering competitions” – as they described it in their first issue – would evolve over the following century. Smartphones and computers really were just the stuff of outlandish science fiction back then, but the fact that there’s still demand for a comping magazine with a similar content mix to that very first edition proves the strength and longevity of their original vision. Who knows what the future holds? With the speed that technology is changing these days, we can’t even begin to guess what comping has in store – even in the next 2 or 3 years, let alone the next 100! One thing is for sure though… Compers News will hopefully be around for a good few years yet, carrying on the proud tradition of our forerunner. Here’s to the next 100 years!

It was fascinating going through our archive to research this article, and I’d like to acknowledge former editors and contributors where original content, cuttings and photographs have been reproduced. Special thanks go to former CJ editor Aubrey Morris, whose ‘History of CJ’ article that appeared in the paper in 1979 proved invaluable in assisting my own research.

Dear Diary

HORSING AROUND Each month in Compers News, our two diarists Helen and Kat take it in turns to tell us about their comping life. This month, it’s over to Kat…

Looking back over the last twelve months, as you tend to do at this time of year, I reflect that, although some of my prizes were not the most expensive in monetary value, boy were they rich in terms of life experiences! Not least of which was the day when we were guests of Audi International at The Beaufort Polo Club in Gloucestershire for the England v Commonwealth match. It was a prize from a regional paper, and from the time that I won it my feet did not touch the ground. Winning phone call Tuesday, tickets arrived Thursday and prize taken on the Saturday! I had been in a panic until the wristbands arrived, as I thought the phone call had said I’d won the VIP tickets but there were also runner-up prizes of £10 admission each. However I need not have worried it was indeed the VIP package for 2 that I had won, and which cost a princely £135 each to buy. It included a champagne reception, three course gourmet lunch, Audi stand seats, afternoon tea and admission to the clubhouse… WOW!

High Society We wondered how the young girls in their skimpy dresses and high heels were going to manage on the uncovered stand with the wind and with rain forecast. The answer was they stayed in the marquee and drank to keep warm! I had opted for practicality in dress, warm trousers and waterproofs, with my only concession to the grandeur of the occasion being the Jaegar top (part of a previous prize) that I wore over a long-sleeved T shirt for warmth. However I was glad to see that I was far from the only one who had dressed for the weather. It was all a little disorientating. We felt like we were at a high society wedding, but for the polo pictures on the walls. The whole gathering did have a real buzz and a party atmosphere.

Beaufort Polo Club is next to Westonbirt Arboretum and we drove through verdant Gloucestershire countryside to get there and very green it was with all the rain we had had. On arrival we toured the many stalls of the country fair. We tasted fudge, dipped bread in rapeseed oil and sampled cheese straws. There were lovely leather polo belts LIVING IT UP Kat and her husband enjoy the hospitality interwoven with colourful threads (one of the many dogs there had a collar in Each polo player seemed to have a table of similar style), designer handbags in luscious guests and the Commonwealth had 2 tables colours, firepits, obelisks and so much more. with Indian ladies, elegant in their long sari type We enjoyed, from a distance, watching dubious robes and jewelled slippers. I was highly relieved novices having polo tuition while riding a horse to see our names on the seating plan next to simulator. table 11. Luckily we were sat with other prize winners and so had something in common from Morning coffee was taken in a tent where the the outset, and we were all very appreciative of tables had a barbecue as an integral part of them the luxury on offer and determined to have a and you removed your own meat from the centre, great time. but we had no need to buy food as a feast awaited! The courses. We had melon with parma ham and figs, overriding impression was that of entering an salmon with buttery hollandaise, new potatoes, ice palace, as everything was snowy white with mixed leaf salad and coleslaw, followed by warm crystal chairs, a draped ceiling, and white roses and crispy chocolate amaretti tarts and Baileys ice and peonies in glass cubes adorning each table, cream. All was delicious and generous in quantity. along with several bottles of wine and copious Also it was timed to perfection as we just had the quantities of mineral water. We were handed chance to down our coffee and it was time to take amber champagne cocktails with fruit and mint our seats for the polo. We had our own stand, or non-alcoholic elderflower and ginger, and the separate from the public stand, and although it refills didn’t stop coming. was uncovered, it was sheltered from the worst

of the wind by the huge marquee to its rear. We even had our own toilet trailers, just outside the marquee, and they were the poshest portable loos I have ever seen with wooden floors and doors, marble countertops with glass bowls for sinks and colour changing lights, more akin to the loos in 5 star hotels! The polo ponies were beautiful with well muscled bodies and gleaming coats. They had bright bandages on their legs and dressed tails, also they could turn on a sixpence. The match was fast and furious and totally absorbing. The field was huge, but I suppose it would need to be with 10 horses galloping at full pelt and with the distance some of the players could hit the ball, at least a third of the length of the pitch. We had a helpful commentary, although even the commentator found it hard to keep up at times. People were friendly and the gentleman behind, who was obviously an expert, patiently explained the different types of penalties to my husband, who loves any sport and was fascinated by this. Excitingly after the third chukka there was the chance to win a prize as you stamped in the divets, as one was concealing a silver champagne stopper which could be exchanged for 100,000 Air Miles. Needless to say I was off across the field like a gazelle, furiously stamping in divets for all I was worth despite the sudden storm, hoping I would stumble across the stopper. Sadly, or luckily for them, someone else won. The field looked much better after the mass pitch invasion, and play only stopped to allow the local farm terrier to vacate the field and when one brave lad was hit in the stomach, but despite being doubled up in pain he quickly remounted and carried on! One and a half hours of polo disappeared in a flash. We loved it and found it easy to follow, despite our lack of knowledge. I used to be a keen rider and could appreciate the level of skill to ride at that speed and hit a ball with such precision. I would happily attend a polo match again given the chance, yet I would never have dreamt of attending a match before. As if we needed more food, the match was followed by a trio of tempting sandwiches, golden fruit scones with jam and clotted cream, lemon cake and fruit cake accompanied by cups of piping hot tea. Sadly we left for home after tea, but what a day, what a prize, what a hobby! Have a great New Year, everyone.

Compers News January 2013

As we say goodbye to 2012, it’s the perfect time for us all to take stock of our hobby and think about how we can improve our chances of winning prizes. This month our resident experts look at quick and easy strategies that really CAN make a winning difference, and ponder the question: is one entry ever enough? PAM SAYS:

I have to say I’m somewhat surprised you’ve not had a single win. No doubt someone will tell me if I’m wrong but I thought that everyone who entered the much talked about Co-op Coke text comp in the summer to win Coca-Cola branded Olympic goodies eventually won something. Perhaps you didn’t enter that one as you don’t mention phone or text comps in your letter, but we did say there were thousands of prizes on offer and when you’re having a lean spell any prize, however small, is welcome.

All the team here at Compers News have won fabulous prizes from that one attempt. And this applies equally for every kind of comp, be it an entry form comp, postcard, phone, text, and all forms of online comping. I certainly wouldn’t generally recommend making a huge number of entries to a single online comp except for those long-running promotions with small daily prizes and a big overall prize at the end… and where the rules allow multiple entries, of course! There are people out there with multiple email addresses who manually enter comps over and over again. Then there are people who set up programmes to keep entering comps for them automatically. There are programs which will even bypass the dreaded Captcha anti-spam codes that so many compers detest. Should anyone making automated entries in this manner be discovered by the promoter they will probably be disqualified as more and more often we are seeing rules prohibiting such entries. If an online competition has a rule limiting the number of entries then make sure you stick to it. Promoters can and do keep track of where their entries are coming from but equally I appreciate it’s not always easy to remember which comps you’ve entered and which you haven’t. Some promoters will only accept the first entry and will discard subsequent ones. Those less tolerant may discard EVERY entry, including that first one so do try to be careful.

And did you enter the daily online promotion with Iceland in the run up to Christmas with 100 prizes a day of party food vouchers? Again only a relatively small prize, but this is the type of comp you really need to be looking for. Do you check into Chatterbox every day? If not that’s a habit you really need to develop as Chatterboxers have cleaned up on so many of these multiple prizes early on in a promotion before it comes to the attention of the general comping public. If you get your entries in early in certain kinds of comp, you often have a better chance of winning a prize. And ANY prize – even a small consolation gift – is enough to fire the confidence and enthusiasm In fact, you may have seen the recent news story and is often a springboard to bigger and better where Pepsi refused to pay out prizes in a comp things. they ran during the summer to one entrant and his family who had entered over 11,000 times You ask if you’re wasting your time with multiple using a high number of slightly varying e-mail entries. As I say so many times, it depends! You addresses! That’s taking things to extremes of need to go through every set of rules with a fine course, but as the T&Cs of the comp only limited tooth-comb and sometimes a magnifying glass entries to one per email address rather than one too. I curse the designers who think microscopic per person, the entrant argued that he wasn’t blue print on a red background looks good! actually doing anything wrong! The more often And it never ceases to amaze me that many that stories like this appear in the press though, competitions which require a proof of purchase the quicker we can expect stricter rules to ensure limit the number of entries to one per household. that similar loopholes can’t be exploited in future This does happen and the unwary comper can comps. Promoters rarely get caught out twice! so easily disqualify themselves. Why on earth would they think that is a good idea when surely Make it your New Year Comping Resolution the whole point of a promotion is increasing to enter as many different types of comp as brand awareness, brand loyalty and higher sales possible. While Compers News, Chatterbox, figures leading to larger profits for the company. The PrizeFinder and our Facebook page all offer excellent comping resources, make sure you are Every experienced comper of long standing always on the lookout for the magic word… WIN! will tell you that it only takes one entry to win. Go up and down every aisle of as many shops and

Ask The Experts

NEW YEAR supermarkets as you can, looking for both entry forms and on-pack promotions. If you see an instore demonstrator it’s always worth checking to see if they are running a competition. Read local papers and magazines as their competitions usually have a much lower number of entries than the nationals. Always pick up the free in-store magazines from shops like Boots, Superdrug, Asda, Morrisons and Tesco as they regularly run competitions. And always enter the Compers News members-only comps, as entry numbers for those are a drop in the ocean compared to the big national mags like Take a Break, Chat etc.

There should still just be time when you receive this issue, so ask someone to buy you a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for Christmas. Use this exclusively for comping, and this way you can only enter those text and phone comps you can comfortably afford without the prospects of a large bill every month. I set aside a fixed budget for top ups. Remember that these days, it’s sometimes cheaper to enter a text comp than to pay the cost of a stamp. It’s also sometimes significantly cheaper than buying a magazine for the entry form.

Now let’s look at some of the advantages of only entering once. COST. Postal entries have become very expensive these days, as have some text and phone ones. And the cost of buying multiple products when a code or receipt is needed can soon mount up (as can your waistline as so many of these comps seem to be on chocolate!). TIME. There really are more comps out there than it’s possible to find and enter even if you were to spend all your waking hours comping. Which means that if you decide to dedicate your time to making multiple entries, there will be other comps that you won’t have time to enter at all. And one of those you miss just might be one you would have won!

RULES. When a comp only allows one entry per person, it may not make it clear in the rules, or you may not notice it hidden deep in the terms and conditions, so all that effort of making multiple entries may result in you being disqualified. If you are entering online, using the email addresses of friends and family may not help in this. It is possible to check exactly which internet connection and computer an entry was made JANE SAYS: The letter above asks: how many entries should from so you could find yourself wasting a lot of I make? Well, we’ve all read about compers time. And never knowing it, because promoters who enter competitions loads of times. With seldom tell people that they have been disqualified! high speed internet connections and multiple phone handsets, it’s quite easy to do. And yes, HOWEVER there are some times when entering in many comps, multiple entries can increase more than once can be to your advantage, as long your chances. But does that mean if you only as you are certain you are allowed to. The biggest enter once you have no chance at all? NO!! advantage comes in comps where there is some kind of tiebreaker, because you can never be sure Just picture a hat full of comp entries. Sally has exactly what the judges will be looking for, so by entered once and Tom has entered 20 times. If entering in as many styles and with as many ideas there are only 21 entries, Tom is almost certain as you can, you are increasing the chance of one to win. Almost... but not quite. That entry pulled of your entries being exactly what they want. from the hat could still be Sally’s, with all of Tom’s left behind. The winning entry is the only one that Another time it is worth entering more than once counts, however many others are left in the hat! is if you are uncertain of your answer. If you are Even if Tom were to win, it would only be one of his allowed multiple entries, work out all the possible entries that won. The other 19 would all be losers. answers and enter once for each. After all, you won’t be in the draw if your answer is wrong. But Now imagine there are 1,000 entries in the hat, don’t get carried away, especially if you are asked a fairly small number for a comp. There are now to rank objects in order of preference. If you are 979 entries that come from neither Sally nor Tom, given 10 things to rank, for example, you would so Tom’s 20 entries become less significant. And need to enter 3,628,800 times to be sure you’d when you get to a big comp with tens of thousands covered every possible combination! of entries, the fact that Tom has entered twenty times as often as Sally is of almost no importance Some of you may be reading this and thinking it is at all. Only ONE out of all those entries can be the nonsense, because you enter multiple times and winner, and that is very nearly as likely to be from win a lot, others will be nodding in agreement with somebody whose name is only in that hat once! me. Personally I don’t have time to enter things more than once, but I still win a lot. It all boils down So yes, there is sometimes a slight advantage to to what works for you - and to what you ENJOY. making multiple entries, but only really in lower entry competitions, and even then somebody And remember, the only comp you can be guaranteed not to win is one you don’t enter at all! with a single entry can still win.

Comping Online

Di’s tips and advice will help you find and win exciting competitions on the web – she blogs at www.superlucky.co.uk and www.theprizefinder.com

Your Creative Comping Calendar In the world of online creative comping, the same themes and promotions crop up every year. Get organised by preparing your photos, crafts, stories, recipes and poems in advance, and you could be on to a winner! Here’s a peek into Di’s comping diary for 2013... IT”S A DATE

I’ve been successfully entering and winning creative online competitions for a while now, and as each new year begins I notice that the same concepts for tiebreaker, photo and recipe comps pop up on Facebook and Twitter. If you plan ahead, you can be organised with your entries well in advance of these comps launching! Here are a few promotions that are likely to make an appearance on the 2013 creative comping calendar... In JANUARY there are usually tiebreaker competitions about your New Year’s Resolutions, and also comps where you need to send in photos of your worst Christmas present! In FEBRUARY prepare to cringe as Facebook pages ask for your proposal stories and soppy tales of devotion. There will also be photo comps – last year there were several where you had to upload something that featured a heart shape! On Pancake Day (12th February) you could bag some goodies with a prizewinning photo or recipe idea – in 2012 there were over 40 pancake comps on Facebook and Twitter.

Plan ahead to boost your winning chances

This SUMMER won’t be nearly as busy as 2012, with no Jubilee, football tournaments or Olympics on the agenda! But there are always a whole heap of photo competitions on Facebook during the school holidays. Some will be for general Summery photos (Sainsbury’s and Boots ran these in 2012) and some with a more specific theme like picnics, camping, festivals or sandcastles. If you’re planning a family day out then don’t forget to take your camera! A recurring theme is funny holiday memories, so if Nana gets herself stuck in a fence (yes, this really happened to us in Dorset on holiday!) it could result in a lovely prize - I won a Senior Railcard for my Mum-in-Law with our silly snap!

On 10th March it’s MOTHERING SUNDAY, and there will be lots of comps asking why your Mum is one in a million, or why you love being a Mum. Prepare in advance and next time you see your Mum, get someone to take a photo of the pair of you together! Poem comps are popular too. EASTER HOLIDAYS are a great time for creative comping with the kids – decorating eggs, making Easter bonnets, cooking bunny biscuits and drawing and colouring comps are abundant. FATHER’S DAY this year is on 16th June and though it’s not as popular as Mother’s Day, there should be plenty of fun photo comps and tiebreakers around – if you have classic Dad photos from the 70s or 80s it’s worth scanning them early so you’re prepared.

Compers News January 2013

As you can imagine, OCTOBER is all about Halloween – check back to the October 2012 issue of CN for my rundown of all the fun photo and recipe comps you can expect this month – home made fancy dress is a popular one.

In NOVEMBER make sure to snap a photo of local fireworks, and if you know someone who’s growing a moustache for the ‘Movember’ campaign there will be lots of photo comps to enter. In fact, many of the 2012 moustache winners weren’t even men, so get your stick-on ‘tache at the ready. Early on in DECEMBER there’s a flurry of competitions asking for photos of your Christmas decorations or Christmas trees – why not do something a bit quirky and different to stand out from the crowd? Then there’s usually lots of comps for cute photos of your babies and toddlers in fancy dress on pages like MadeForMums, Netmums and Bounty. On Christmas Day make sure to video your children’s reactions as they open presents. If we have lots of snow this Winter, make sure you’re out and about building an unusual snowman - I’ve already found some great ideas on Pinterest for mine. If you’re preparing early entries for competitions, then consider sending these photos, stories and recipes to magazines too. Chat, Pick Me Up, Love It and My Favourite Recipes start preparing themed issues a few months in advance... and we do at Compers News too! Send your themed letters, photos and puzzles to us and you could win shopping vouchers! Finally, if you’re finding it hard to track down all these creative comps then keep an eye on my blog at www.superlucky.co.uk for my regular roundups of themed comps throughout the year!

HOW TO ENTER Fiendish multiple-choice crosswords like this appeared in lots of newspapers and magazines from the 1930s until the 1970s. They were hugely popular, and advice for solving the many different puzzles on offer was a mainstay of our forerunner Competitors’ Journal during this time. All you have to do is complete the crossword grid here by solving the clues in the normal way, making sure that you write one letter ONLY in each of the blank squares (and yes, we realise that some of the clues could have more than one potential answer… that was all part of the fun!). Once you’ve completed your entry, make sure that you complete your details on the main entry form overleaf and then return the entire form to us – you’ll notice that when you cut out the form overleaf where indicated, the grid here remains intact on the reverse. We’ll check every entry against the official solution and will award a £100 cash prize to the sender of the first all-correct entry drawn. In the event of there being no all-correct entry, we’ll award a guaranteed ‘near miss’ £50 cash prize to the sender of the first entry drawn with at least 10 answers correct.
