Bon Voyage

We flew into Miami last December and set off on a wonderful eight-day cruise visiting St Croix, Puerto Plata, San Juan and Bimini. Our Virgin Voyages ship was the height of luxury, with twenty bars and restaurants, a night club and plenty of entertainment. We even won $200 at the on-board casino, which helped cover a few little extras on our prize trip.

After returning to Miami, we had a late-night flight back home. So we were able to relax and explore the city on our last day, and made a point of visiting the world-famous Miami Beach. It was a fantastic holiday… all thanks to comping!

Too Much of a Good Thing?

Hello again everyone, and welcome to the August issue of Compers News. New comps are continuing to hit the supermarket shelves thick and fast, and I can’t remember things being this busy for a very long time.

It’s a point I’ve made many times over the years, but companies often turn to competitions and prize draws in times of economic difficulties – and I think that this is at least partly why there are so many comps on the shelves at the moment. Competitions are cheaper for companies to run than across-the-board price reductions, and price cuts might not be possible at the present time anyway as raw material and production costs are on the rise. Even if a few pennies can be shaved off a shelf price, consumers are less likely to notice as the overall cost is probably still going to be higher than it was a few months ago anyway. So a well targeted, eye-catching comp is better placed to grab a shopper’s attention.

Of course, companies still need to keep their costs low so we need to be alert. We’re already seeing a return of promotions with inflated prize pools that are “available to be won” rather than “will be won”, so it’s more important than ever to check the T&Cs of a comp closely – especially if the prize fund seems too good to be true. These unpopular ‘algorithm’ comps had almost disappeared – and rightly so given their misleading claims and the inevitable bad feeling subsequently attached to the brands – but they seem to be sneaking back as promoters work to ever shrinking budgets.

Another ‘victim’ of the current avalanche of new comps is our own Listings File. We’ve struggling to fit everything in over the last couple of months, and our ‘Ongoing’ listings – which I know from your letters and emails that many of you find valuable as

a reminder of current comps, or a useful safety net if you missed the original listing – have all but disappeared. It’s a balancing act for me to get those Ongoing listings right – for every ‘bring them back’ message I receive, there’ll be a counter ‘good, they were a deliberate waste of space anyway’ sentiment! –but personally, I think that a carefully curated selection of Ongoing listings is useful. As a final call to enter for comps nearing their closing date, for example, or as a reminder to keep entering the longer-running comps as special packs start disappearing from the shelves and interest from other potential entrants begins to wane.

I tried – but failed – to squeeze a few of the more relevant Ongoings into this month’s Listings File, and I’ll be keeping a close watch on the situation in the coming months. If the current comp glut shows no sign of slowing down, I may need to think about reintroducing something along the lines of our retired ‘Shopping List’ or ‘Ongoing’ listings categories to remind us all of the comps that are still out there. So watch this space!

As well as the longer-running purchase-necessary comps that we are able to include in the magazine, we’re also seeing a trend towards shorter-dated comps that sometimes fall between our monthly deadlines. These will always be posted on Chatterbox though, so if you’re not already a member of our Discussion Board then now might be a good time to pop in and say hello. Cash For Trash

Back in the June issue, I looked at a competition that was a bit different to those we normally enter. This month I turn my attention to another unusual comp, which unfortunately didn’t end on a positive note.

In May, Currys announced their Cash for Trash competition. To enter, you needed to drop a piece of old tech equipment off at a Currys store to be recycled. You had to take a photo in the store while you were doing it, and then post the photo to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook with the hashtag #CurrysCashforTrash and the name of the store you had taken the item to. There was a very generous prize structure, with 1 x £1,000 Currys gift card and 10 x £100 Currys gift cards to be won each day for fourteen days, and a grand prize of £10,000 awarded to one overall winner at the end of the promotion – 155 prizes in all, worth a total of £38,000.

What a great promotion. Lots of prizes, and also good for the environment – a win/win situation. The competition started on 11th May and closed on 24th May 2023, and I quickly saw social media full of entries… it seems we have a lot of old tech lying around our homes!

The first problem was an issue over what photos could be submitted, as the rules weren’t clear. Could you enter the same photo every day, or did it need to be different –potentially meaning that you needed to find fourteen items to recycle if you wanted to enter the comp each day? A few people asked Currys this question and unfortunately their social media team sent out mixed messages, some said you could reuse the same photo, and others said you couldn’t. Also, what constitutes

“tech”? Does an old computer cable count? How about a toaster – some of those can be very high tech! Does your item need to be mains or battery operated? Could you enter on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter all on the same day with the same photo? No one could get a straight answer.

Currys have a section on their website regarding recycling items under normal circumstances when the competition wasn’t running, where a ‘qualifying product’ is defined as “Any electrical product powered by a battery or mains supply via a plug, working or non-working, that does not need to have been purchased from Currys” – so did this definition also apply for the competition?

Considering the lack of rules about what and how you could enter, there was one specific rule in the Terms and Conditions that led Compers News member Mrs B to contact me:

This promotion is open to all GB residents, including Currys Colleagues (excluding NI and Isle of Man) aged over 18 years. Multiple entries are allowed.

Mrs B wrote:

I don’t think I have ever seen the rules of a competition where employees are allowed to enter. Surely this could only lead to accusations of favouritism or biaswhat could possibly go wrong!?

Good point. It is certainly very unusual, and I think that most businesses would run a separate ‘employee only’ competition alongside the main one just to make things fair. When they have been so general with the rest of the T&Cs, I wonder why this one was specifically included?

To be fair to Currys, there was no problem finding out the winners. They posted a list of names on their social media channels every day. The real problem came when the main £10,000 winner was announced, and this led to a few more members contacting me. Mrs M wrote:

From my investigations, it looks like the winner had only set up their Twitter account during May, and only had a couple of photos and posts on there. Their winning photo was of a computer mouse that plugs in with a USB connector – did this really count as tech?

I had a look at the winning entry, was there really anything to be suspicious about? So they were a new Twitter user – that doesn’t really matter. The question of what counted as tech had never been clarified, so a computer mouse was presumably OK. They had posted the same photo every day, but whether that was allowed or not had never been confirmed either. Looking at things from the opposite viewpoint, I was concerned to see that the winner posted on Twitter

saying that they had received a lot of online abuse about their win.

As so many people had raised it with me, I decided to try and find someone at Currys who would discuss the promotion. What followed were several long and painful interactions with various members of the Currys social media team who refused to enter into any correspondence. I eventually called Currys HQ and was told that the team that had handled Cash for Trash had been disbanded and there was no-one left to answer my query! Had they disbanded the team to make the problem go away? I decided not to make an ASA referral as the whole issue was really hearsay and if they had chosen the winner at random, perhaps this entry really had come out of the bag first and it would have been difficult to prove otherwise. I think it would have been better for them if the winner had been a long-term Twitter user who had entered ‘correctly’ a few timesif we knew what that meant! Do let me know what you think.

Against The Odds

Algorithm comps. It seems that barely a month goes by when I’m not talking about them again. I really felt they had fallen out of favour with promoters, but they seem to be back with a vengeance and with some laughable odds of winning!

The first one on my list this month is the latest promotion from Vimto. Called the ‘Vimto Big Cash Giveaway’, the promotional page at www.vimtobigcash.co.uk says that you can win a share of one million pounds – which sounds very generous. Until you read the T&Cs:

Odds of winning a prize are 1 in 1,999. Should less than £6,000 be claimed during the Promotion Period, a catch-all prize draw will be held at the end of the Promotion for all losing entries. The prize fund for this catch-all draw will be the difference in cash value between the amount already claimed by Entrants and the sum of £6,000. Entrants drawn at random within this catch-all prize draw will each

win £100. Should more than £6,000 in cash prizes be claimed during the Promotion Period no catch-all prize draw will take place.

I assume this means that, in reality, there will actually be 60 winners of £100 rather than the 10,000 winners that would be needed to hit that £1million claim – so why not be more honest and just say that? I guess ‘Win a share of £6,000’ doesn’t make such an exciting headline!

The second comp that has caught my attention this month is on promotional packs of Coors beer and runs until 30th November 2023. The on-pack T&Cs state:

Entrants have the chance to win one of 10 trips for two people to the Snowbombing Festival 2024 in Austria or one of 1,000 Bluetooth speakers. Snowbombing prizes are won instantly via winning moments. All speaker prizes are available but may not be won, prizes allocated via algorithm, estimated chance of winning is 1 in 4,700.

This would suggest that there are 4,700,000 promotional packs in circulation (1,000 x 4,700), and every promotional

pack will have to be entered for all 1,000 speaker prizes to be won. Which will never happen – nowhere near – and the promoters must know this. One speaker for every 4,700 entries seems a very poor return to me, and does anyone want to have a guess at how many will actually be won? I will make a note to send for a winners list when the competition is over.

Time Lapse

I received an email from Compers News member Mrs D:

At the beginning of May I saw a competition posted on Chatterbox, where you needed to purchase any Cadbury product from the Co-op to win football-related prizes including a behind-the-scenes experience, stadium tours and personalised club shirts. I entered the prize draw, which closed on 23rd May 2023, and on 31st May I received an email telling me that I was a potential winner of a personalised Premier League football shirt and asking for a copy of my till receipt, which I provided. I eventually received a reply on 12th June saying that, according to their records, I had entered the competition on 10th May at 13:28 but that the till receipt was timed at 13:43 on that day so I had effectively entered the competition fifteen minutes BEFORE buying the chocolate! I was astounded, as there was absolutely no way I entered before buying the bar. I filled in the entry form online when I got home, at the same time as I filled in a Co-op customer service questionnaire noting that the cashier had gone out of her way to take time assisting a disabled man to the door with his shopping. To fill in the entry at the time they allege, I would have had to do it when I was driving to the store or whilst in the aisles of the store itself! I replied to them saying that either the till timing or their entry timing must be erroneous, but they did not have the courtesy to reply. I suppose that ‘no correspondence will be entered into’ and ‘the judges’

decision is final’ will apply, but I am (a) hugely disappointed and (b) very upset that my honesty and integrity are being compromised. It seems that I have no recourse whatsoever. I have no way of disputing which of the timings is at fault, but I do know I did NOT enter prior to purchase! I’m not sure if there’s anything more you can suggest - but do really appreciate your taking the time to look at my situation.

How can this be possible? Did Mrs D’s local Co-op have a time portal? Joking apart, I just couldn’t understand it. In this day and age we assume that everything is fully digital, synchronised and automated. I assume clocks could be different by a couple of minutes here and there, but surely not 15 minutes? I contacted PromoVeritas who had administered the prize draw, and received this reply:

I have now had a look at the details and I can see the issue with the dates. We have checked against Promodata (where we store all entry data) and there is no way that the entry time would have been incorrect. The only other option is that the receipt supplied to Mrs D had an incorrect time stamp, but of course we cannot confirm this. We responded directly to the winner earlier this week as we received an email from her and, as expected, she is disappointed. Sorry. There is nothing more we can do unless she speaks to the retailer to check the time stamp of the receipt.

I went back to Mrs D to see if she could indeed go back to the store to find out if there was a known issue with the till times. She replied:

I’ve been on the phone for 15 minutes to Co-op Customer Services, and I must say they have bent over backwards to try and assist me. They’ve checked their till times and they have been accurate for the last two months (apparently they need to log any inaccuracies and haven’t needed to do so over that period) and verified that their records show my purchase at 13:43 as per my receipt. I categorically didn’t enter before buying so frustratingly I am on a hiding to nothing. To say I am hugely disappointed is an understatement.

As this was an online entry mechanism, we have no way of checking the times ourselves. If it had been a text entry, we would have had the time of the sent text. I have had to accept that we are at stalemate and reluctantly give up on getting the prize for Mrs D. I am also struggling to think what we can learn from this situation. Firstly, definitely don’t risk entering before buying the product, thinking that you will pick up the product later when you are out. Secondly, if the closing date is far enough away, perhaps we should now consider waiting a day or two before entering, so there can be no question of timing issues?

I’ve known situations in the past where a promotion’s ‘clock’ has been an hour out after the clocks change, or where a website server has been in a different country or time zone which has caused problems with competitions supposedly closing at midnight UK time, for example, but this one has me flummoxed. I would be interested in your views.

Kiss and Tell

Kiss FM ran an online competition where you had to write about an embarrassing holiday experience. I knew I had the perfect story so on the Friday I completed the form, although it was a challenge trying to squeeze humour and the punch line into the limited number of words allowed.

I was surprised to get a call really early on the following Monday morning from a Kiss FM producer, saying they loved my story and asking if I would be prepared to retell it on air to Jordan & Perri – the Kiss FM Breakfast Show hosts – in about ten minutes time!

I was nervous of course, but I had to give it a go. Luckily it all went well, they loved the story and announced that I had won a holiday with Jet2 Vibe

to Croatia. I was thrilled as that was a destination on my travel wish list!

Cash, Cars… & Football Stars

Linda Beresford began comping in 1998 and, despite taking a few breaks from the hobby over the years, has won some exciting prizes along the way.

My first big wins included two cars, a family holiday to Florida, a diamond ring and Grand Prix tickets. One of my car wins was featured in our local newspaper, and it was a nationwide promotion with lots of Rover cars up for grabs. You had to visit your local Rover garage to enter the prize draw, and I visited and filled in an entry form every day while the competition was running. The staff all knew me by the closing date!

I have taken a few breaks from comping over the years. The first coincided with the demise of slogan competitions, which I really missed when they started to disappear, and the others were due to life in general getting in the way. I dabbled in the Quiz TV-type channels which became very popular for a short time before closing down almost overnight, and managed to amass £23,000 in wins while the fad lasted. And then, in 2021, I decided to have a look at the comping scene again which by then had really embraced

social media entries which at that stage I didn’t feel confident with. So, playing it safe and knowing radio competitions are often lower entry, I entered and won a holiday to Benidorm with Capital Radio. We took the holiday in September 2022 after Covid restrictions had eased, and being keen fans of the Benidorm TV show we sought out some of the hotspots featured in the series. These included Mateo’s bar, which had some of the original props from the series on display including Madge’s scooter which I couldn’t resist trying out.

Feeling rather pleased with my holiday win, I began to think that maybe I shouldn’t have taken such a long break from the hobby and I decided that it was time to take a proper look at the current comping scene – which meant making the effort to learn all about social media entries. Working from home meant that l could listen to multiple radio stations and tackle the various entry routes on offer

to compers nowadays, and prizes soon started to roll in again – including an LG TV and home entertainment bundle worth £3,000. Even though slogans had

almost disappeared, I realised that there were still plenty of effort-needed comps to keep me interested.

I persevered with the radio comps, and Valentine’s Day 2022 saw me hit the jackpot with the Cash Register game which runs across the Bauer radio network. A daily prize amount is read out

on air, and if you’re lucky enough to get the winning call you need to tell them the exact amount. I got the call, and knew that the prize total for that day was £35,303! l was absolutely ecstatic at winning such a large amount of money, and it has helped my family out no end – especially with my son getting married, and my daughter saving for a house.

Happily, the big prizes have kept on coming. In May last year, I won an England Lionesses Legends Experience in the Mars SupportHer instant win promotion, and the following month we had three family wins in the Walkers Crisps and EasyJet prize draw. We won £1,500 worth of holiday vouchers between us, and I put my share towards a lovely trip to Amsterdam.

With plenty of other prizes along the way, I don’t think I’ll be giving up comping again any time soon!

FAQs: Radio Comps

Last month’s issue covered the various entry methods for on-air radio competitions, and discussed which formats offer the best chance of a win. This month, Di answers your questions on the topic of radio competitions.

After winning, how long should I wait to hear from the radio station?

If you win an on-air competition, sometimes the DJ will ask you to stay on the line, or sometimes they just hang up. Don’t panic - they have your name and number!

After winning, you may receive a text message with a link asking you to register your details online, or a staff member may call you to ask for your email address. You may have to send them proof of your identity, address and date of birth. Next you should receive email confirmation of your prize – often this is from the prize fulfilment agency NDL. If appropriate, the email will include details of an ‘exclusion period’ (ban).

If it’s been a couple of weeks since a Global win, try contacting Customer Support (Customer.Support@Global. com) or for Bauer, submit an enquiry via their webste at support.planetradio.co.uk/hc/en-gb/requests/new

I had a missed call, was it from a radio competition?

People often panic that they’ve missed out on the huge Cash Register prize because they had a missed call at 3.10pm! But if the call was from a known number, then it definitely wasn’t the Cash Register or Make Me A Winner call – these will display number witheld. If the call was from a London based landline number it could well have been from a radio station regarding another competition you’ve entered or won - try Googling the number to check. When I’ve received winning phone calls from Heart and Magic I have saved the office numbers to my phone contacts in case they call again in future.

Incidentally, compers should always answer calls on a mobile from witheld or private numbers. Most will be spam or scams of course, but don’t risk leaving a winning call unanswered! Radio producers are in a hurry to get their contestants organised and some won’t try to call twice –they will move straight on to the next contestant if you don’t pick up!

Is it best to listen on an analogue radio?

If you tune in via digital radio, app, TV or online there’s a slight delay - so if you do have access to an old fashioned, analogue radio that can be helpful. You’ll be the first to hear when to call in, and you’ll have more time to research an answer before sending a text message.

Can I win more than one prize on the same station?

Yes, you can win again - but if you’ve won a valuable prize, you will have to wait for 6 or 12 months! The three main companies, Bauer, Global And Wireless, all activate bans with slight variations. It’s important to be aware of these rules, which ban you from entering competitions for a set period. Bans are put in place because it’s relatively easy to win radio comps if you’re dedicated, so the stations need to prevent serial winners from picking up all the prizes.

Bauer (Planet Radio: Magic, Kiss, Absolute, Hits Radio...)

Bauer have a set of general competition Terms and Conditions and also specific T&Cs for individual competitions. If the terms contradict each other, then the specific terms take priority. Once you’ve won a prize valued at £500 or more from any Bauer brand, you’re not eligible to win a prize from any Bauer brand during the next 6 months. It’s OK to enter Bauer competitions during your six month ban, as long as they have a closing date AFTER your six month ban ends!

Quite often, specific Bauer competition T&Cs will state that a six month ban applies to all household members (meaning anyone living at the same address as the winner).

Global (Heart, Radio X, Capital, Classic, Smooth...)

If you win a high value prize (over £1,000) with Global, you cannot win any more Global promotions for the following six months. If you win two prizes valued at less than £1,000 each, you will get a six month ban too. Global bans only apply to the individual - people in the same household can continue to enter competitions.

Wireless (Virgin Radio & Talk Sport)

If you win a prize of any value with a Wireless Group station (online or on air), you’re not allowed to enter any of their competitions for a full 12 months, which seems rather mean considering Graham Norton’s prizes on his Virgin show can be as small as a £25 Waitrose gift card!

Some compers won’t enter for prizes valued at £500 on a Bauer station because they don’t want to invoke a 6 month ban for a smaller prize and prefer to hold out for a biggie! If your prize value is approximately £500, always check with the fulfilment agency to see if it means you have a ban.

Is there a free entry option for every premium rate radio competition?

Unfortunately not every radio station offers a free entry route instead of their highly priced text and online entry competitions.

Bauer list premium rate comps at winhappy.com and you can find free entry details in the indivdual T&Cs for each competition. As well as the comps offering free entry by phone, some comps listed on Win Happy offer postcard entry – look for details in the T&Cs (despite a stamp costing almost £1, this is still classed as a ‘free’ entry).

Global Premium rate comps can be found at winplus.co.uk and there is no free entry route.

Can I call or text on multiple phones?

Multiple people in your home can enter a radio competition, but you shouldn’t text or call using separate phones that all belong to you as general T&Cs for all major stations state one entry per person.

Can I enter on a regional station outside the area where I live?

Heart and Capital have a number of regional stations, which will often run their own promotions sponsored by independent businesses. Sometimes they run holiday promotions concurrently across multiple local stations, especially to win Jet2 holidays where departure is from an airport in the same area as the station. Each station will use a different keyword for the start of the entry text message and you can enter all of them. Usually these local station competitions are open to all UK residents, and you don’t have to reside in the broadcast area –but always check T&Cs before entering, just in case!

It’s good to have an excuse ready if the DJ queries that you’re not local – eg. your smart speaker streamed the wrong station, or your friend in the area told you about the competition! Some promotions may feature a detailed list of qualifying postcodes in the T&Cs.

Do BBC Radio give away prizes?

The BBC rarely give away prizes, but Radio 1 do a huge Jan Slam promotion every January where they give away sports, event and concert tickets daily – entry is usually by texting to 81199. For Radio 1 promotions you usually need to put in some effort to prove you really want to win!

Can you enter while abroad?

Texts to UK shortcodes won’t work while overseas. If you pre-registered for a competition and happen to be abroad when the radio station call you up to play, that’s OK.

Can holiday prizes be changed?

Because of limited time, radio DJs rarely give full prize details on air. It’s worth checking the full T&Cs for any competition you plan to take part in, to see what’s included, any restricted holiday dates, etc. If exact dates and hotel details aren’t specified in the T&Cs then there may be flexibility when booking. I recently won an allinclusive trip to Mexico for two adults in term-time, but NDL adjusted the trip so we could take our son and travel during school holidays - we just paid the extra money for this.

How can I prepare for an on-air competition?

Preparation is key. For a daily sponsored competition, listen on the Monday to hear an example of how the format works. You may need to swot up on a topic - Champions League, Disney, European countries, etc. Print out a list of Googled facts if you think they will be required! If you do get a call back, or are put on hold to play, be sat in front of your computer or tablet with Google open so you can try to search for answers if necessary (DJs usually allow you a few seconds to answer a question). Remember to turn down the radio in your room to avoid feedback, and make sure your phone has enough battery - plug it in if necessary. I usually put my phone on speakerphone in front of me rather than holding it, after an incident where I accidentally hung up just as I was about to go on Hits Radio to play for a holiday! Finally, I recommend if you’re interested in radio comps, save links to all the radio station competition pages and check them every few days for new additions. When the last letter is in a square at the head of a snake or the foot of a ladder, repeat the letter at the other end of that snake or ladder and continue from there.
