Back in April, Birmingham’s NEC played host to the CV Show, and Company Car & Van was there to check out the new vehicle launches – many of which were, unsurprisingly, electric focused.

Renault, Ford, MAXUS, Isuzu, IVECO, Innovation Automotive, Canoo and B-ON all showed off new vehicles, and we’ve a review of the show inside.

Highlights included Renault launching the new electric Master and Trafic E-Tech, and Ford showing off its new longer range E-Transit and the highly anticipated E-Transit Custom.

Isuzu gave us a taste of what the brand can do with a beefed up AT37 Arctic Truck and V-Cross Steel edition D-Max, while the highlight at MAXUS was not one but two new electric vehicles, the eDELIVER 5 panel van and the MIFA 7 MPV.

Other commercial news comes in the form of upgrades to the Toyota CV range and some competitive business deals across the Volkswagen commercial range.

Away from this, with BIK at 2%, company cars are still making up the majority of UK

electric car sales, and we take a look at several this month. Chinese brand BYD has launched three electric cars in under a year and this month we try out the smallest, the DOLPHIN. Subaru is getting in on the EV act with the Solterra, which is AWD to boot. We took one for a spin and discovered it’s as at home off-road as on.

Vauxhall launched an electric Astra Sports Tourer at the end of 2023 which we review inside, and with some highly competitive contract hire rates around it is well worth taking another look at our Large Electric Car of the Year, the BMW i5, which is almost, but not quite, as good to drive as the ICE version. Electric may be in vogue but for those not quite ready for a full EV, there’s always a plug-in. Our Premium Car of the Year, the Range Rover Sport P460e, which comes with just 5% BIK, is a case in point, as is sister brand Jaguar’s E-PACE P300e, both of which put a smile on our faces recently.

Enjoy!

Electric showcase!

In April, Birmingham’s NEC played host to the CV Show, and Company Car & Van was there to check out the new vehicle launches, which were, unsurprisingly, very much focused on electric power.

Renault took the opportunity to launch its new Master and Master E-Tech large van to the public (more on page 8), as well as showing off electric Trafic and Kangoo E-Techs. Renault’s EV charging arm, Mobilize, was also on hand to show visitors just how easy it is to manage your electric fleet using its new Fleet@Home offering, which provides a charging solution for businesses who wish to give drivers the choice of charging at home, at work and on the road.

MAXUS was at the Show in force, with 13 electric vehicles on display. Pride of place went to the new electric eDeliver 5 panel van and MIFA 7, a smaller companion to the larger MIFA 9 unveiled at 2023’s show.

Ford had the largest stand, the highlight of which was the first look at the extended range option for the E-Transit. This features an 89 kWh useable battery capacity for a maximum driving range of up to 402 km.

ISUZU showed a one-off AT37, developed in collaboration with Arctic Trucks, the biggest vehicle Isuzu has ever built. It sat alongside a range of D-Max models including conversions and the limited edition V-Cross Steel Edition.

The IVECO eDaily ‘Mobile Power Station’ made its debut. Its modular battery set-up and up to 50kW ePTO onboard power is able to power heavy-duty equipment. The Mobile Power Station is based on a 4.25-tonne, three-battery eDaily (42S14e) with 15kW high voltage ePTO.

Elsewhere there were plenty of new electric brands vying for attention including Innovation Automotive who featured the DFSK EC35, B-ON, who showed off its all-new production Pelkan eLCV, and new kids on the block Canoo with the electric LDV 130 and 190. Visitors were also able to attend the Workshop Sector and Destination Net Zero, where more than 30 industry experts and influencers took to the stage at an all-new seminar programme, aptly named The Road Ahead.

Renault strategy has all the bases covered for electric CV fleets

Seb Brechon, Renault’s Head of Commercial Vehicles and Pro+ Brand, outlines the company’s electrification strategy to Andrew Walker

CC&V: One of the highlight launches at this year’s CV Show was the unveiling of the new Renault Master. How was it received, and do you think the longer-range electric Master E-TECH could be a game changer for you in the large electric van sector?

Seb Brechon: We received a fantastic response to the New Master at the CV Show from both current customers and prospects alike. With its 285-mile (WLTP) range and a best-in-class payload, we are convinced that it will break down barriers for fleets wanting to decarbonise their large van fleet.

Plus, thanks to the all-electric New Master E-Tech, we have a commercial vehicle that truly breaks that 200-mile barrier.

CC&V: Renault also recently unveiled a new Trafic E-TECH which, alongside the Kangoo E-TECH and Master E-TECH, gives Renault a full set of electric vans. How important is it for a manufacturer like yourselves to have a wide electric CV choice as we head towards 2035?

SB: We need to help our customers and their fleet managers with the decarbonisation of their fleet. To do this we need to cover all bases – all their requirements.

With our updated vehicle range we are confident, be it in the small or medium van, or the large and conversion vehicle segments, that we have the right product to offer our customers no matter their industry. The New Master E-Tech, the Renault Trafic E-Tech with up to 183-mile (WLTP) range and up to 50kw rapid DC charging, plus the award winning Kangoo E-Tech, cover most of our fleet customers’ needs.

CC&V: Conversions is an important sector for SME fleet. What kind of models does the new Master offer for businesses looking at van conversions, and are all these also offered in electric form?

SB: Conversions are really key for us and our customers. On the New Master we will offer a selection of conversions, both factory derived or converted with our approved local converters. These will include Luton box vans, dropsides and tippers. In electric, we will offer both platform and chassis cab versions which will be available for local conversions.

CC&V: The CV Show enabled you to show the industry your full electric van range. How important will the electric van sector be to Renault moving forward?

SB: The Government regulations state that all OEMs need to be able to attain 10% E-LCVs in 2024; and that target increases in 2025, and in 2026.

To be able to respond to this, we need to have the right products to ensure we offer customers an E-Tech equivalent to their current internal combustion vehicles, without comprising their working patterns. Our product range, working alongside Mobilise Power Solutions, our Renault Group subsidiary dedicated to the provision of end-to-end charging solutions, provides a complete solution for fleet managers to help them on their journey in electrifying their commercial vehicle fleet.

CC&V: Finally, the Kangoo Van was our Small Van of the Year for 2024. It’s offered in petrol, diesel and electric powertrains.

Have you seen an increase in petrol sales in the small van sector and will Renault continue to offer customers a petrol and a diesel option?

SB: We are very fortunate to have the Kangoo in our range – it has pride of place as the Small Van of the Year!

Electrification of commercial vehicle fleets is important for us all, but not all fleets are ready for that change in its entirety. As such, it is equally important to ensure we offer a diversified product range to cover all fleet managers’ requirements.

This is the first time we have had a Kangoo available as a petrol version in the UK, and we have seen substantial interest as an alternative to diesel due to cost and lower entry price.

“We received a fantastic response to the New Master at the CV Show from both current customers and prospects alike. ..”

Unplugged: Is electric mobility really the way for company car drivers?

Despite the global push towards electric vehicles (EVs) as a sustainable transportation solution, the UK is facing challenges in accelerating their adoption.

Frustratingly, many company and business drivers feel that there are still too many reasons not to drive electric, and these outweigh the positive reasons to switch.

One of the primary hurdles hindering EVs’ widespread adoption is the perception of insufficient charging infrastructure. However, significant strides have been made in expanding the network of charging stations. Zapmap recently reported that in the first four months of 2024, the rate of charge points being installed across the UK increased by almost 37% compared with the average across 2023. This means that there are now over 60,000 public charging stations across the UK’s road network.

But this isn’t the reason to adopt e-mobility. Driving electric is convenient and economical. Plugging in at home cannot be simpler and will provide sufficient charge for many business drivers, without the need to locate on street charging facilities. With the average

range of vehicles easily topping 300 miles, and the ability to charge overnight, vehicles can be ready for the journeys ahead without stopping en route.

Moreover, the cost of charging electric vehicles at home can be as little as 7p per kW on smart off-peak tariffs. This means that a vehicle with a 60kW battery can be fully charged for £4.20, and on a 300-mile range this is equivalent to just over 1p per mile!

Beyond immediate financial gains, electric vehicles also offer a long-term solution to mitigate fluctuating fuel prices. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, companies can shield themselves from the volatility of the oil market, ensuring stable and predictable transportation costs. This stability enhances budget forecasting and financial planning for businesses, fostering a conducive environment for growth and investment.

The maintenance requirements of electric vehicles are notably lower than their combustion engine counterparts. With fewer moving parts and simplified drivetrains, EVs experience reduced wear and tear, resulting in lower maintenance costs over the vehicle’s lifespan. Routine maintenance tasks such as

oil changes, spark plug replacements, and exhaust system repairs become obsolete, streamlining fleet management and minimising downtime for company operations.

For businesses, another compelling benefit of EVs for company car drivers is the accessibility to a private dedicated charging infrastructure. Workplace charging can benefit from the Government’s EV infrastructure grant, allowing businesses to get up to 75% off the cost of the work, up to a maximum of £30,000 and £350 off every charge point installed. These workplace charging solutions enable company car drivers to easily recharge their vehicles during office hours, or while attending meetings and visiting clients.

In conclusion, electric mobility offers a multitude of benefits for company car drivers, which for many businesses can outweigh the negative reasons for electric. Aside from cost savings and convenience, driving electric provides environmental sustainability. This not only aligns with corporate values of efficiency and innovation but also positions businesses as leaders in the transition towards a cleaner and greener future.

By incorporating electric vehicles into fleets, companies can drive positive change while reaping tangible rewards for their bottom line and the planet alike.

Solar EV charging project saves council £150,000 a year

Workplace Charging:

The County Hall Solar Carport, Storage and EV Charging Project

Northumberland County Council has embarked on a new green technology development, aimed at reinventing urban architecture to incorporate more sustainable energy sources.

Unanimously approved by members of the Castle Morpeth Local Area Committee, the County Hall Solar Carport is one of the largest in the UK.

Partially funded by the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020 with match-funding from the council, the solar energy generated will power EV charging infrastructure for staff and fleet vehicles and all excess will be diverted to the main building of the council headquarters.

Tackling the council’s carbon emissions at the source and helping support their aim to half emissions by 2025.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

Covered in an 800kW solar array and with 400kW of battery storage, the £3.8 million structure required to be completely selfreliant: producing its own energy to charge electric vehicles in parking spaces sheltered by the carport while also diverting the remaining energy to the council building itself.

Naturally, this means the charging network would need to be compatible with solar charging.

Furthermore, chargepoint infrastructure would need to be established outside of the Castle Morpeth County Hall, to support the charging of all staff and fleet vehicles entering the site.

These needed to include advanced information on vehicle metrics and the ability to accurately monitor the site’s energy usage.

“I want to thank everyone involved... this project is a real example of using innovative technologies to move us towards a cleaner sustainable future.’’

requirements for a durable solution with a small footprint, thanks to its robust and sleek, wall-mounted design.

Powered by Monta’s back office, the completed chargepoint network also has access to the most advanced features for fleet management. These included a fully integrated approach to vehicle metrics, giving the council information on battery size, state of charge, charging percentage and location, as well as other details.

BENEFIT

It is anticipated the new solar energy infrastructure will save between £100,000 and £150,000 on energy costs each year, which can be invested in council services.

As well as this, it is estimated over 250 tonnes of carbon emissions will be saved each year, assisting the council to meet its target of cutting its own emissions in half by 2025.

Not only does the project serve an economical purpose it also supports a healthy grid system and makes renewable energy infrastructure a part of the city landscape.

The project has been well received by the council, which can see its clear future benefits. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, said: ‘‘It’s great to see this initiative come to fruition. It will save a massive amount on council energy supply spending and will also reduce the need for us to rely on fossil fuels to power our main building.

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. It is a real example of using innovative technologies to move us towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.’’

MAXUS delight as eDELIVER range grabs the CV Show limelight

MAXUS had one of the stand-out displays at this year’s CV Show. Mark Barrett, General Manager, Harris Maxus UK & Ireland, looks back at the show in conversation with CC&V’s Andrew Walker

CC&V: One of the highlights at this year’s CV Show was the unveiling of the electric eDELIVER 5. How was it received and do you think it has the potential to be a popular selling electric van?

Mark Barrett: The eDELIVER 5 had a very positive reception following its official unveiling, and we’ve already received quite a number of business leads on the back of its launch. I believe it will shake up the market and add some fresh competition to the mid-size van segment.

The overall aim at MAXUS is to ensure that there is an electric van available for each and every business type. As the name suggests, our latest model, the eDELIVER 5, is smaller than the MAXUS eDELIVER 7, which we launched at the CV Show last year, but bigger than the eDELIVER 3 model.

With a payload of 1200kg and a range of 206 miles (with a 64kWh battery) this vehicle is a workhorse that can cater to businesses and drivers from all walks of life.

Modern technology including the introduction of all-new IOV on the vehicle and features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assistance, 360-degree surround-view camera and a 12.3-inch centre screen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto offers drivers a comfortable driving experience with everything they need at the touch of a button.

CC&V: You launched your eDELIVER 7 at last year’s CV Show, and we drove it in January. It’s landing here shortly, so what are you expecting from it sales wise and do you think that it’s Transit Custom-size will bring new customers to the MAXUS brand?

MB: The eDELIVER 7 was the first vehicle in the MAXUS EV range to enter the mid-size van market when launched last year, fitting snugly between our smaller eDELIVER 3 van and larger eDELIVER 9 option. It comes in a SWB, LWB and offers two height options and two battery options, a 77kWh and 88kWh. This van comes with a max cargo volume of 8.7m3 and an impressive one-tonne

payload capacity, ensuring it caters to a multitude of businesses.

The eDELIVER 7 bridges a gap in the midsize van sector. Orders opened earlier this year in January and we have seen quite a lot of interest so far. In fact, we currently have a number of demo vehicles out for testing with some of the UK’s largest blue chip companies.

CC&V: CV operators are more on board than ever with the transition to electric vans, and last year MAXUS supplied the second most electric EVs in the UK. With the new eDELIVER 5 and MIFA 7 joining the MAXUS range, can you go one better in 2024 or 2025?

MB: At Harris MAXUS, our sights are firmly set on the future of motoring, encouraging the transition to greener transport for organisations, businesses, and individuals alike. We have ambitious targets for the year

ahead with double digit grown anticipated in 2024. Our range of vehicles is everexpanding and we have more in the pipeline…. so watch this space.

CC&V: The CV Show enabled you to show the industry your full electric van ranges , MIFA 9 and MIFA 7 including conversions. How important is the electric van conversion sector to MAXUS, and which of your conversions are proving the most popular?

MB: At MAXUS we’re focused on catering for all types of businesses and conversions are a huge part of that, so naturally it’s extremely important to us. Whether our clients need a vehicle with refrigeration, or a minibus with disabled access, we ensure we have conversion capabilities available through our trusted network of convertors. Typically, when it comes to conversions, business owners purchase standard vehicles and take them to after-market specialists to customise. At MAXUS we have simplified this process in a bid to reduce the time between placing an order and having a vehicle ready to use.

We work closely with our network of convertors to ensure that the bespoke requirement of each customer is met. Temperature-controlled conversions are our most common request – we have a lot of customers in the grocery sector, as well as the pharmaceutical industry where these vehicles are required for deliveries on a daily basis.

E-Pace: Jaguar nails it with a great-looking plug-in SUV

To grab company car drivers’ attention, you need to offer them what they want, and what they want right now is a plug-in hybrid or EV. JLR brought out the electric I PACE to satisfy this demand, following it up with electrified E and F-PACE models with plug-in technology.

We’ll look at the plug-in E Pace P300e here. It borrows its drivetrain from the plug-in Range Rover Evoque. So you get a 1.5-litre 197bhp three-cylinder turbo petrol engine coupled to a 15kWh battery and 108bhp electric motor. Add these together and you have a whopping 309PS with 540Nm torque, making it the most powerful E-Pace yet.

From the outside, not a lot has changed. Jaguar has kept the original E-Pace shape, but redesigned the front and rear bumpers, and added new headlights and taillights. Inside, though, things are markedly different, with new tech leading the way.

The E-Pace features a new much improved 11.4” Pivi Pro infotainment unit, a 12.3” digital instrument cluster, a new steering wheel with touch sensitive controls and a new gear selector. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are now standard, making life with your smart phone much easier in the latest E-Pace.

Model line-up

Three models: Entry is the R-Dynamic S at £49,385, our test car, R-Dynamic SE Black, is £51,965, and range-topping R-Dynamic HSE Black at £54,204. All three have a BIK of 12%.

Infotainment

Great improvements on display here. Gone are the slow graphics and responses of the old system, replaced with sharp graphics, lightning changes, clear and concise menus and an easy to understand layout.

Cabin and spec

The interior feels quite pokey, primarily because of the high side windows and dark interior. The build quality is excellent, with top quality plastics, leather and chrome. The spec includes auto LED headlights and tail lights, 17” alloys, front and rear parking aids, a 3D all around camera and push button start. Safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Hill Launch Assist, cruise control, Emergency braking and Brake Assist, plus airbags all round.

Practicality

The cabin itself isn’t the most spacious and there’s only ever going to be enough room on board for four. In its favour, though, the front seats are incredibly comfortable, with the multi-adjustable driver’s seat a highlight. You also get twin cup holders, large door pockets,

a sizeable glove box, a pull down rear centre armrest and front armrest with underneath storage and two USB connections. There’s no rear USBs though.

The boot capacity is compromised by the addition of the battery, only 494 litres is on offer while the ICE model offers 577 litres. There is a handy space under the boot to store two bagged charging cables, plus a 12V power socket, tether hooks and a netted cubby on the side of the boot, all very useful.

Charging and battery range

The 15kWh battery will charge up in a couple of hours on a 7kWh home charger. Use a Rolec Smart Charger, http://rolecserv. com/ev-charging overnight and get a full charge from £1.15.

As far as the battery range goes, you can travel up to 37.3 miles on battery power alone and claimed fuel economy is 188.5mpg. Over seven days of a cold April we drove 600 miles to get a combined fuel economy of 41.2mpg, with about 31 miles electric only.

Performance, CO2 and BIK

The E Pace is heavy, at 2.2 tonnes, but feels swifter and more agile. It’s certainly quick, hitting 62mph in 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 134mph. CO2 emissions stand at just 33g/km, and a 12% BIK tax bracket. In that respect this is a no brainer as this is the E-Pace for company car drivers.

Driving

Thanks to the massive 540Nm when petrol and electric power are working together, the

P300e is great fun to drive. Acceleration is rapid, the brakes are excellent and feels good both in and out of corners. Over rougher surfaces the large alloys and tyres aren’t the softest, and the ride becomes quite fussy over the bumps. Handling is exemplary. The EV mode is very good. You set off in near silence and the car switches in and out of hybrid mode selecting what works best. You can save the battery range by selecting the SAVE function enabling you to utilise this where the miles will go furthest at 30mph or lower.

There’s a Sport Mode which tightens up the throttle and adds a bit of fun. Comfort is the middling choice while ECO gets you the best mpg. On 400 miles of motorway driving we stuck to ECO and were on the right side of 45mpg.

Pros

Beautifully built, much improved dashboard and infotainment. Exhilarating to drive, handles well, and saving pennies on BIK.

Cons

Plug-in is expensive – our test car the RE Dynamic Black costs £52,220 OTR – and extras push it over 55k. The cabin is quite dark and both cabin and boot space aren’t great.

CC&V VERDICT

We really liked the earlier E-Pace, and love this update. Plug-in option makes E-Pace a great car to drive with loads of pace and performance. Looks great, and finish is exemplary, as is infotainment system. Cabin and boot space are compromised but you’ll live with that to spend more time in this great Jaguar.

BIK is just 12%

Go on, spoil yourself!

Luxury for less with unbeatable BIK

It’s a privilege to get behind the wheel of a Range Rover Sport P460e, says Andrew Walker

Motoring writers are spoilt. A different car or van to review every week. Tough life. However, after 30 years in the game, even I have to agree that when the car in question is the Range Rover Sport P460e, it’s really not tough at all.

Two plug-ins are offered, the P460e SE and P550e, with P460e starting from an eyewatering £90,145, but that’s not the point. Its low BIK of just 5% makes the P460e, in relative terms, a bit of a bargain.

It’s powered by a 3.0 litre 6-cylinder petrol engine and a 38.2kWh battery that’s almost twice as large as the competition can muster. Claimed pure electric range is 73.3 miles, with 50 miles readily achieved in our time in the test car. To put that range in context, that’s as good as the original Nissan Leaf, so you can see just how far we’ve come in a decade.

Exterior

The latest Sport is a lesson in less is more. It oozes kerb appeal, especially in our test car’s Varesine Blue with black exterior pack and bespoke 22” wheels. It’s unmistakably a Range Rover. Slim front and rear LED lights, pop out door handles and blacked out Range Rover wording only add to the aura.

Inside

Our test car featured a mix white and ebony perforated Windsor leather seats with

night when rates are 7.5p a kWh.

Performance

The Sport is no slouch with a top speed of 140 mph and 60mph hit in just 5.5 seconds.

BIK and MPG

With such a high official electric range of 70 miles coupled to low CO2 emissions of just 17g/km, the P460e sits in the 5% BIK category for company cars. Claimed WLTP range is up to 382.4 mpg, which is amazing, but let’s be honest, unlikely.

To clarify, we ran it on local roads for a week, on short journeys, and managed 50 miles before resorting to the petrol engine. That’s brilliant. The trip info showed an average of 88.8mpg. We then drove it further and faster on the M6 and A66 on a 155-mile journey and this returned 38.7mpg – again, impressive.

a white and ebony interior, ebony headlining, a panoramic glass roof and brushed aluminium finishes. Everything looks good and feels soft to the touch. The latest Pivi Pro infotainment is a major step up with a large 13.1” touchscreen and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability.

Separate climate controls underneath handle the fan speed and heated seats.

There are three driving modes available. Eco – our preferred choice – Dynamic or Comfort. The standard vehicle setting is Auto Terrain Response, but you can also access all-terrain options such as Wade, Rock Crawl, Sand, Mud-Ruts or Grass-Gravel-Snow.

Practicality

Our test car featured two charging cables in handy bags which do take up some space in the boot. The battery reduces the boot capacity to 647 litres but that’s enough for most people.

In the cabin you get two large front and rear door pockets, under armrest storage, twin centre drinks holders, a rear armrest with twin drinks holders, rear heating vents, heated seats and steering wheel and overall it offers plenty of leg and head room for up to five adults.

Charging

On a Rolec 7kW home charger (https:// www.rolecserv.com/ev-charging) the P460e will take five hours to charge to full. It also has the ability to be rapid charged using a DC unit up to 32kW, cutting the time to 80% full, to just 55 minutes. Get on a special electricity tariff for EVs, plug-in at home at

On the road

Despite the fact that, at 2.8 tonnes, it is heavy, it is a lot lighter to drive than you’d expect. The steering is nicely weighted and the tyres offer plenty of grip. Body roll is negligible even over Pennine switch-backs. Push it hard and it behaves impeccably.

In town it’s quiet and comfortable and the eight-speed automatic gearbox feels refined and overall, forward progress is amazingly relaxing.

The good

Ridiculously low BIK of 5% means an annual company car tax bill of under £2,000. Brilliantly built, incredibly comfortable and amazingly capable. The 50+ mile battery range is a game-changer.

The bad

Expensive and you do lose almost 200 litres of boot space over the diesel version.

CC&V VERDICT

If you’re lucky enough to be able to choose a Range Rover as your company car, then the Sport P460e really is a no brainer. Nothing else bar the larger Range Rover PHEV comes close to its pure electric range and with such low BIK you’ll save, too. Comfortable, capable and refined as you’d expect, and as an added bonus, looks-wise it’s sophisticated and doesn’t shout too loud.

Vauxhall delivers a practical family electric estate

Vauxhall has launched an electric estate –the Astra Sports Tourer. It shares the standard ICE EMP2 platform as the rest of the Astra range, but features a 54kWh battery. This sends power to the frontmounted electric motor for an output of 156PS/115kW with 270Nm of torque. It’s an interesting addition to what is quite a sparse sector, with only the Peugeot e-308 SW and MG5 EV as competition.

Outside

Apart from a tiny ‘e’ on the boot, it’s almost identical to the Astra Sports Tourer. The front features Vauxhall’s latest Vizor headlight and grille treatment while at the rear, wing-shaped tail lights and a mid-boot number plate make it stand out from the competition.

Inside

The interior fixtures and fittings are mainly matt black with some black gloss featured in the centre binnacle and on the door window switches. The build quality is very good and we especially like the rectangular air vents. The dashboard is dominated by Vauxhall’s ‘Pure Panel’ which consists of two 10” screens behind a single panel, giving the impression of a large uninterrupted display. There are some handy short cut buttons

located beneath the touchscreen. In between the front seats there are twin USB C inputs and a 12v socket. This also contains twin cup holders, the electric parking brake, rocker switch gear lever, Drive Mode switch, armrest with storage beneath and a pop open storage space that’s perfect for your keys.

In the rear there’s a single USB C and twin air vents with small rear door pockets. You also get a fold down armrest with twin cupholders inside.

Infotainment

Vauxhall’s operating system is Pure Connect, and it features Pure Panel Pro Multimedia SatNav, 10” colour touchscreen, 10” digital instrument cluster, AM/FM/DAB digital radio, Bluetooth and wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The wireless CarPlay connected to our iPhone in an instant. The screen graphics, response times and ease of use are all very good.

Specification

We tested the left-hand drive version of the Ultimate model – hence the German plates on our test model above! This comes with a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone climate control, 18” diamond cut alloys, six speakers,

a panoramic sunroof, Alcantara seat upholstery and Vauxhall’s Intelli Drive 2.0 suite of safety functions. These include Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Positioning Assist, Advanced Intelligent Speed Adaption and semi-automated Lane Change Assist with side Blind Spot Alert. There’s some electric front seat adjustment, but for moving backwards or forwards you need to use the manual under-seat lever.

Driving modes and range

The Sports Tourer Electric features three driving modes with each giving the car a different theoretical range. When fully charged in Eco mode the range displayed was 276 miles. In Normal mode this reduced to 262 miles while in Sport mode, the figure was 250 miles.

As you move down from Sport through the driving modes each one increases the car’s brake regeneration. So driving in Eco offers less power than Normal, which in turn offers less power than Sport. You can also increase the regeneration function by selecting ‘B’ from the gear selector. It will add some valuable extra miles to your range, but it’s not strong enough for one-pedal driving so you will need to use the footbrake to come to a stop.

26 | June 2024 | Company Car & Van www.companycarandvan.co.uk VAUXHALL ASTRA SPORTS TOURER

Performance

Compared to rivals the Sports Tourer is a little underwhelming, with a top speed of 105 mph and a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds.

Charging

The Sports Tourer features an on-board 11kW charger and will charge up to 100kW on a fast charger. So a 20% – 80% charge would take just 26 minutes. Plug-in at home on an AC 7kWh charger like our own Rolec and a full charge takes eight hours.

Boot space

You get a more than useful 528 litres of storage in the Tourer’s boot. Fold down the rear seats and this goes up to 1,553 litres. The load space measures 1.03 metres wide making loading and unloading incredibly easy. The boot floor is also usefully flat and there’s space underneath to store your charging cable.

Driving

Having driven the Astra Electric we were expecting the Tourer to be similar on the road. In a straight line it is, but take it on to a poorly maintained road and it doesn’t feel quite as

instrument cluster neatly displays all of the information in a logical manner. Rear passenger space is better than in the Astra hatch, with the longer roof line offering a bit more headroom. Overall it’s a good place to spend time in.

Pros

accomplished. Maybe this is because the wheelbase is longer or that it’s slightly heavier than the hatchback, but it doesn’t do as good a job of hiding the car’s battery weight and tends to fidget over imperfections, of which there are a lot in the UK’s road network.

Good news, though, is that in Sport mode it’s eager when pushed and is especially good fun when you’re driving over decent tarmac or winding roads. The steering is light and the balance is very good.

You get a typical instant electric hit from the off, but once you reach 50mph the power peaks and the cars acceleration levels out. On a main road you can select the Adaptive Cruise Control or Autonomous Driving modes, sit back and relax. Sticking to the speed limit means that you’ll pretty much see the range fall in a ratio of 1:1 as you’d expect. As with all electric cars, if you push-on it will fall faster, and faster again in colder weather. If you’re sat up front, you’ll have no problems getting comfortable. The cabin controls fall easily to hand and the infotainment system graphics and input responses are impressive. We connected our iPhone quickly to Car Play and the driver’s

The Sports Tourer offers an incredibly practical alternative to a boxy electric SUV. It also drives way better than one as well. Fitted with the latest Stellantis 54kWh battery means a competitive 250 + mile electric range. Coming with an board 11kWh charger means faster charging. BIK is just 2%.

Cons

It’s not as accomplished a performer as the smaller Astra Electric.

CC&V VERDICT

If you really need the practicality of an electric estate, the Astra Electric Sports Tourer should definitely be on your shopping list. It’s fitted with a premium interior that’s easy on the eye and comes packed with a host of tech and safety features to satisfy the most demanding customer. It’s not the most scintillating car to drive at speed, except when you’re in Sport mode. On the basis that range is an electric customer’s number one priority, the increase to 250 miles means that it ticks that box too.

Subaru uses its tech know-how to join the EV party with a bang

Subaru has an electric car and it’s called the Solterra. Developed in conjunction with Toyota, Subaru has used its all-wheel drive know-how on the specific off-road settings for the Solterra, Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ 450e. It’s a model that gives the brand a foothold in the electric car sector and with a move by Subaru into business contract hire, an opportunity to target company car drivers. Subaru already has an extremely loyal customer base, so conquest sales will be the order of the day.

Model choice

Two options. The entry level is the Limited from £52,995. It’s far from Limited, mind, with 18” alloys wheels, a 360-degree parking camera, a digital rear-view mirror, a heat pump, adaptive cruise control, a powered tailgate, heated front and rear seats and a heated steering. It’s also all-wheel drive, as is the Touring version, which adds a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging, a Harman Kardon sound system and larger 20” wheels to the list. In the fleet sector it’s the BCH price, currently £249 a month, that will be of most interest.

Exterior

The Solterra features plenty of angular edges. We particularly liked the front end profile, the aggressive high wheel arches and the slim LED lights front and rear. The back has a rear roof spoiler that’s split with a small wing on each side for better aerodynamics. As with Toyota’s bZ4X, there’s no rear wiper.

Inside, apps and touchscreen

As with the exterior, the interior is quirky. For starters, there isn’t a glove box and the dash features a sofa-like cloth finish. More interestingly, the TFT panel and information display are set back, so as with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit you have to look over the steering wheel to see the screen, which may be a problem for some. It’s also surrounded by what looks like a running machine set-up, with two grab handles, one on each side. It’s certainly different!

Both models feature a 12.3” touchscreen infotainment system, allowing access to connected Subaru’s Care Apps and control of the car functions from a smartphone, including the ability to pre-heat the car, set charging schedules and view driving data. The graphics and touch reaction speed is excellent and one of the best we’ve come across. Below the touchscreen you get stand alone climate controls.

Overall, the quality of the materials used in

the cabin is high and more than a match for its competition. The cabin itself is light, roomy and airy, and there’s a generous 452-litre boot.

Engine, charging and range

The Solterra’s two electric motors produce 215bhp with 337Nm of torque and it will accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds. The battery capacity is 71.4kWh with a DC charging rate of 150kW and AC of 7.0 kW. You also get two charging cables Type 2 and one with a domestic plug.

It will take nearly 12 hours to fully replenish the battery from a home charger but do it overnight and save money. An ultra-rapid charger will top up from 10-80% in take 28 minutes, but will cost north of 70p a kWh. Subaru claims a range of 289 miles on a single charge in Limited-trim cars, while Touring-spec, the one we drove, is good for 257 miles. When our Solterra was fully charged in April, it showed a maximum range of 242 miles, so the Solterra isn’t too far off the benchmark from the likes of KIA’s EV6 and Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 and 6.

On the road

Start up and the Solterra is quiet and smooth from the get go. The steering is well weighted and you don’t notice the heavy battery, which is a very good thing. A 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds is impressive but it actually feels quicker.

Despite its SUV pretensions, the Solterra actually has a low centre of gravity and coupled with excellent suspension makes for very enjoyable driving. There’s very little in the way of crashing and vibrations even on bad road surfaces. You get capable handling coupled to a decent ride, with a bit of fun thrown in for good measure.

There’s a regeneration feature to recharge the battery on the go. In the strongest setting, offers almost – but not quite – onepedal driving.

Pros

Great looking and really good fun to drive. The cabin is brilliantly spacious and equipment levels are high. The inclusion of AWD will aid sales in certain sectors. For company car drivers its 2% BIK is a winner. On board 11kWh charging capability and a heat pump are also good news, as is the bargain bucket BCH rate currently being offered by Subaru.

Cons

It is expensive, so Business Contract Hire is the order of the day for fleets. Watch out for a real-world range drop in winter.

CC&V VERDICT

Subaru is famous for its AWD expertise and super-fast models of old, but the new Solterra illustrates that it is well capable of making an impact in the EV world, too. Great quality – arguably the best Subaru yet – and great to drive, with excellent ride and handling. Off-road it will take you almost anywhere without breaking a sweat. Other electrics will go further, and winter range takes a hit, but despite this, Solterra is an excellent electric introduction.

Don’t take any heed of its rivals: the BMW i5 really is the executive’s number one choice, says Andrew Walker

Still the executive’s dream

BMW’s ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ tagline was used for years to emphasise how good its cars were to drive, and ever since it has been the benchmark in the premium sector, the brand that all up-and-coming executives aspire to drive.

With BMW electrifying its model range it offered a glimmer of hope for rivals to break the stranglehold, but fear not, BMW fans: the electric 5 is still the one to beat. Here’s why...

Model choice

There are two electric models from launch, the i5 40 Drive or M60 xDrive. The i40 is offered in M Sport or M Sport Pro livery.

Both feature an 81.2kWh lithium ion battery. The eDrive40 features a rearmounted electric motor developing 335bhp and 317lb ft of torque, with a 0-62mph time of 6.0sec and a top speed of 120mph. Prices start at £71,105.

The four-wheel-drive BMW i5 M60 xDrive is priced from £97,745. This uses the same rear-mounted electric motor in combination with a smaller front-mounted motor, which delivers an added 256bhp and 269lb ft of torque, so it comes with a combined system output of 593bhp and 605lb ft of torque. It also offers a super-fast 0-62mph time of 3.8sec and an electronically limited top speed of 143mph.

Driving range and charging

The eDrive40 offers a claimed range of between 296 and 362 miles, while the M60 xDrive claims 283 to 321 miles of range.

The i5 offers 11kW AC charging as standard. This can be increased to 22kW with an optional on-board charger. The maximum DC charging capability is 205kW, so on a public fast charger, BMW claims a 10-80% charge within 30 minutes. Any fleet customer choosing electric should have

access to a home charger, which at 7.4kWh means you’ll fully charge up your i5 in around 12.5 hours.

Exterior

The latest 5 Series is very much a progression of the 5, though bigger in all dimensions. Electric exterior touches include a blanked-off design on the front kidney grille in high-gloss black plastic, a single ‘i’ on the grille front and the i5 moniker on the rear.

Interior, infotainment and cabin practicality

The latest 5 Series adopts the 7 Series’ triple-layer dashboard with a single curved display panel. This contains both the 14.9” infotainment touchscreen running BMW’s 8.5 operating system and the 12.3” instrument cluster. The graphics are sharp and response times swift. There’s also the return of the ‘marmite’ BMW click wheel.

Seats are clad in ‘Veganza’ leather, with the soft-touch chrome, grey and black fixtures and fittings a step-up in quality from what came before.

Driving and regeneration

The $64,000 question: is the i5 an ultimate driving machine? For a start it’s typically EV heavy, coming in at a weighty 2,205kg and the 0-62mph time of six seconds could only be described as so-so. Acceleration is brisk but tails off at motorway speeds. The ‘Boost’ mode adds a short burst of fun.

On-board regeneration features High, Low and Medium settings. If you don’t want to choose one yourself, then there’s an Adaptive mode that will handle it for you.

Road holding is excellent. We were testing on narrow, damp, country roads and the i5 never feels anything other than grippy, with the added battery weight helping to tie it down. Compared to electric rivals, the

steering is sharp, but it’s genuinely not as reactive as the steering in a petrol BMW saloon, for example.

The adaptive air suspension does an excellent job of hiding the weight, feels comfortable inside and is well poised when travelling over most road surfaces.

Company car benefits

The i5 is a veritable company car bargain, with a BIK of 2%. A higher-rate taxpayer will spend only £592 per year until 2024/25, with a rise to £889 in tax year 2025/26.

Pros

It’s the best electric car to drive since the BMW i4 and definitely has the Wow factor. It’s brilliant to drive, with only the Genesis GV60, KIA EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 6 anywhere near it. Beats Tesla Model Y on handling and poise, and particularly on quality. The updated infotainment system and on-board tech are both spot on.

The large battery equates to a decent electric range. And of course, low BIK equals cheap-as-chips company car tax.

Cons

It’s expensive and perhaps a little safe in its design compared to rivals. Speccing your i5 up will be an expensive undertaking.

CC&V VERDICT

Almost but not quite the ultimate driving machine. Superb quality that you can’t match, and a great drive. Only thing to mark it down from perfection is pricethough the BIK rate makes up for that

Transmission: Single-speed auto, front-wheel drive

BYD’s making waves as the DOLPHIN cruises into view

Having already launched the mid-sized ATTO 3, and with a Tesla competitor in the SEAL, BYD is moving through the gears by now offering a small car, the DOLPHIN. On a grey Yorkshire day, Company Car & Van headed to Skipton for a chance to drive one, and here’s how we got on.

What is it?

A small five-door hatchback that will compete with the MG4, ORA Funky Cat and the Citroen e-C3.

Model choice and range

Four are offered. Active and Boost feature the smaller Standard Range 44.9kWh battery with a 211-mile range, while the Comfort and Design are the extended range models, with a 60.4kWh battery and 265-mile range.

Active and boost will set up back £26,195 and £27,195 respectfully, with the Comfort at £30,195 and the Design at £31,695.

Specification

Active gets a 12.8” rotatable infotainment screen, vegan-leather upholstery, a 70kW electric motor, L2 driving assistance and 16” bi-colour alloy wheels. Boost adds 17” bi-colour wheels, a larger 130kW electric motor and multi-link rear suspension. Comfort comes with two front parking sensors, a six-speaker audio system and heated front seats. Range-topping Design tops thing off with a dual-tone exterior, a panoramic roof, rear privacy glass and a

wireless smartphone charger.

Outside

The DOLPHIN is a fairly standard looking five-door hatch, reminiscent of the Renault Captur and of a similar size and shape to the Vauxhall Mokka. LED taillights go right across the rear with the Build Your Dreams logo in the centre. The front features a narrow flat black grille, the larger BYD logo and curved LED daytime driving lights. On our Design test car the roof and bonnet were finished in urban grey, the main body colour being a fetching surf blue.

Inside

We were testing the range-topping Design which doesn’t feel cheap. Plastics are solid, and the dash front and steering wheel are trimmed in a fetching blue, as are the seats. Plastics used are cheaper lower down but still

more than a match for plenty of +£35k competition.

The rotatable touchscreen is large and clear with a simple screen icon to switch between portrait and landscape or vice versa. The DiLink 4.0 4G system comes with voice recognition, integrated Apps including Apple CarPlay, SatNav, DAB and Over the Air updates. Our Design model included a sixspeaker audio system as well as a wireless smartphone charger.

The switches for some functions are cylindrical, including the gear change, which is certainly novel if a bit fiddly. You also get steering wheel controls for the driver safety functions, including the cruise control and the infotainment and voice control.

Practicality

Interior space is good enough for four adults, with decent rear head and legroom. The usual glove box, sizeable front door pockets, twin drinks holders and under armrest storage all feature.

The boot comes with 345 litres of space and height adjustable/removable floor plus a bag for your charging cable. Fold down the rear seats and the space increases to 1,310 litres.

Charging

DC 88kW and AC 11kW 3 phase are offered, so a 30-80% charge will take as little as 29 minutes on a fast charger.

History made as Lookers BYD Sheffield showroom opens

Lookers BYD Sheffield hosted its official opening on Thursday, April 18, ahead of a weekend of activity to celebrate the launch of its new showroom in the city.

The state-of-the-art dealership, located on Savile St East in the north east of the city, is the first Lookers BYD site in the UK to hold its official opening event.

Other launches will follow at Lookers BYD dealerships in Middlesbrough and Belfast.

Groundbreaking Chinese EV brand BYD, (Build Your Dreams) was founded in 1995 and is currently taking the UK by storm, with its sleek design, innovative technology and affordable prices.

Ryan Smith, General Manager at Lookers BYD Sheffield, said: “It’s a really exciting time for BYD and we’re looking forward to sharing all the exciting things the brand has to offer with our customers.

“We’ve already have more than 80 vehicles on site, bringing in BYD’s three electric car models, the DOLPHIN, the SEAL and the ATTO 3, as well as BYD’s first EV van, the ETP3.”

Ryan added: “There are also plans in place

for more vehicle launches over the next two years.

“At the moment, all vehicles at Lookers BYD are new, but used vehicles will join our stock as time goes on.”

The new dealership, which has created five new jobs for Lookers and has more than 70 staff on site, opened to customers on January 31. At the end of April, the team sold its 400th vehicle. As well as supplying vehicles locally, Lookers BYD Sheffield also delivers nationwide.

Ryan said: “We’re delighted with the level of interest we’ve had so far as more and more customers engage with the BYD brand and the exciting possibilities of EV driving. We anticipate further expansion in the future in terms of stock and staff, with more models joining the range over the coming years.”

Lookers, one of the UK’s leading automotive and aftersales service groups, announced its partnership with Chinese car brand BYD last year, reflecting its

“BYD is now a serious contender in the electric car sector, offering industry-leading battery technology, fantastic design, value for money and excellent build quality across the range.”

commitment to being the UK’s number one choice for all-electric driving.

Offering full dealership facilities for retail, Motability, fleet, parts and servicing, visiting Lookers BYD Sheffield really is a great opportunity for customers to look and learn about the new EV vehicles in the BYD range and the cost savings available.

Lookers offers a number of methods for financing and is more than happy for customers to come and browse the range or organise a test-drive.

At home on a 7.4kWh wall box (https:// www.rolecserv.com/home-charging) and the larger battery will top-up from empty in approximately eight hours or overnight, which is handy.

Driving

We’re not damning with faint praise here but the Dolphin is as equally as good to drive as pretty much every other small electric car. With 310Nm of torque, acceleration is impressive, so 0-62mph is reached in just 7 seconds and in a straight line it’s good fun. Hit some winding roads as we did close to the Ribblehead Viaduct and it feels very much like a Scalextric car, hanging on well to the tarmac and moving in and out of the turns comfortably. The steering isn’t especially involving, but the suspension

handles poor road surfaces with aplomb. It pretty much does what it says on the tin and will make a very competent small family car.

Pros

Price. For a car this size, only the MG4 starts from a similar price as the BYD Dolphin. Two batteries means more choice, which is never a bad thing. Build quality, model specification, safety features and the BYD infotainment system are all impressive. Good warranty, too.

Cons

Even though you can choose from some funky colours – Coral Pink anyone – the Dolphin is quite vanilla to look at, certainly compared to the MG4. Furthermore, you won’t find it exciting to drive. Proficient yes, but exciting... no!

into view

CC&V VERDICT

We’ve said it before, what is really needed to get the average person into an EV is cheaper electric motoring, and the BYD Dolphin ticks that box. BIK for company car drivers is just 2%, making it an attractive proposition as well as for those considering salary sacrifice. Furthermore, it drives and handles at least as well as the majority of small electric cars, but is better built and better equipped than most costing more. Considering BYD has only just entered the UK car market it’s a really good effort, especially with it being offered at such a competitive price.

Striking bZ4X brings Toyota’s qualities to the electric sector

The bZ4X is Toyota’s first electric only vehicle. Andrew Walker reports...

What is it?

Size-wise, the bZ4X is slightly longer and lower than a RAV4. On the road it competes with the Skoda Enyaq, VW ID4, Nissan Ariya, Ford Mustang Mach E and Hyundai IONIQ 5, all of which are a similar size. In addition, it’s been co-developed with Subaru taking advantage of Subaru’s 4×4 expertise, making it, claims Toyota, “more of an off-roader” than its rivals.

Outside

Toyota doesn’t do boring and the bZ4X features plenty of angular edges . We particularly liked the front end profile, the aggressive high wheel arches and the slim LED lights front and rear. The back end also highlights the car’s aerodynamics, with a rear roof spoiler that’s split with a small wing on each side. There’s no rear wiper though.

Inside

As with the exterior, the interior contains some of Toyota’s quirky signatures. For starters, there isn’t a glove box and the dash front features a sofa-like cloth finish. More interestingly, the TFT panel and information display are set back, so as with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit, you have to look over the steering wheel to see the screen. It’s also surrounded by what looks like a running machine set-up, with two grab handles, one on each side. It’s certainly different!

Our test car featured a 12.3” touchscreen that uses the latest Toyota Smart Connect infotainment system, allowing access to connected Apps, the air-con and DAB. With four USBs, two up front, two in the rear, all passengers can connect their smart phones. Toyota’s graphics and touch reaction speed is excellent and frankly, is light years ahead of where the company was just 12 months ago. Below the touchscreen is the centre console. Here you will find the gear selector. Push down and twist right or left to engage. You’ll also find the electric handbrake, a covered phone charger as well as the main car function buttons, including those for Eco mode, the Camera and Brake Regeneration. Materials used are high quality.

Practicality

bZ4X comes with a roomy, light and airy cabin. Up front, there’s good leg and head

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

What’s the thinking behind the name, bZ4X? It’s not the catchiest of car names, but bZ stands for Beyond Zero, 4 for mid-size and X means crossover.

room, and rear passengers won’t complain either. The two front door pockets are generous, although the small ones in the rear aren’t that useful.

Up front you get two ‘C’ USBs, with two more in the rear. There are centre twin cup holders, a lift-up arm rest with space and a hidden storage cubby under the gear selector in lieu of a glove box. It all means that the BZ4X offers plenty of storage solutions.

There’s also a generous 452-litre boot, 60/40 split rear seats and a lightweight luggage cover. The boot floor lifts up with room below to store two charging cables and it’s flat so for easy loading or unloading.

Model range

Three specs are available: Pure, Motion and Vision, with a choice of a 2WD or an AWD model. The two-wheel drive model is powered by a single 204PS motor, while the AWD versions have a motor on each axle to producing up to 218PS.

Battery and charging

The charging port is on the front left-hand side of the car. The range features a 71kWh battery on the 2WD version, with a WLTP range of up to 317 miles. This falls to 286 miles for AWD models. Both versions come with a 150kW DC on-board charger, which means fast charging to 80% in 30 minutes at a suitable charge point.

All new 2023 models also have an onboard

11kWh on-board AC charger. Roadside charging is very expensive, so get yourself on a specialist EV electricity tariff, plug-in at home between 00.30 and 04.30 am for rates as low as 7.5p a kWh. We were adding 30kWh per night at a cost of £2.10 a pop.

On the road

The model on test was the AWD model, which features hill-descent control, lowspeed crawl control and a 500mm wade depth. Despite a wet January week, however, we didn’t face anything more challenging other than a few flooded roads, which is most likely to be all your bZ4X has to tackle.

Start up and the bZ4X is quiet and smooth from the get-go. This is aided by thicker glass in the side windows and a wider gap between the external door mirrors and front threequarter panel, which reduces wind noise.

The steering is well weighted and you don’t notice the car’s heavy battery, which is always a good thing.

Acceleration is very good, with a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds. It feels quicker with 337Nm’s of torque on offer. The bZ’s low centre of gravity, coupled with its excellent suspension set up, make for very enjoyable driving.

On the motorway the usual suite of ADAS aids, including autonomous driving and cruise control, encourage stress-free progress. We found that when travelling at 70mph in the wet, the 18” wheels and tyres did let some road noise in, otherwise it’s business as usual, with the large, heavy, bZ4X handling broken road surfaces with aplomb.

Real world range

As most readers will know, real world electric range and claimed can often be as far apart as John O’ Groats and Land’s End. On a

TOYOTA bZ4x
36 | June 2024 | Company Car & Van www.companycarandvan.co.uk

cold January, that difference is usually amplified – and here the bZ4X is no different from its rivals.

When fully charged the 160kW Motion AWD offered a range of 182 miles. Turn the heating off and this goes up to 238 miles – a big difference. The problem is, of course, that turning off the climate is fine in April, but not so great in January – or in summer. A couple of 80-mile motorway round trips saw the battery range reduce by 100 miles each time, so from 182 to 82, about a 20% loss.

Charging up at night on our Rolec Smart Charger was cheap enough – 30kWh per night cost just £2.10 – but, with only a 182-mile range unless the heating is off, any journeys of more than 150 miles would make me decidedly nervous.

Overall we achieved 2.8 miles a kWh, some way shy of the 4-4.4 miles claimed by Toyota. As ever, if you want to get decent range in any electric car, drive under 70mph in Eco mode, utilise the regeneration where offered and be selective with the climate control.

Pros

Very different inside and out from its competitors. It’s electric so only 2% BIK. Comfortable and practical. Quick and great fun to drive.

Cons Our AWD model would set you back

£51,410, so far better to lease. Real world range in winter is likely to be up to 20% lower than claimed. In torrential rain we missed having a rear wiper.

Conclusion

Forget about the bZ4X being electric, first and foremost it’s the best Toyota car yet! Toyota has always lagged behind for infotainment but the system on board the bZ4X is up there with the best. The ride is excellent, with handling that makes you smile, and four adults get loads of room to relax within the spacious cabin.

On the downside, as with all BEVs, real world range takes a hit in winter, and the AWD versions are expensive. Better to look at an

entry level 2WD which loses the large infotainment screen and AWD capabilities, but at £42,860 for the Pure model, is the cheapest way into the range. Is it a challenger? We think so, especially when you add in Toyota’s famed reliability.

CC&V VERDICT

This is a great first electric car from Toyota. On drive, ride and handling alone it gets our vote – though the range makes it imperative you think about the type of journeys you make

Volkswagen in warning to business fleets as race to Net Zero hots up

There’s no time to waste in transitioning your fleet to electric despite Government pushback

Leasing company, Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS) Fleet is warning businesses not to delay transitioning LCV fleets, despite government net zero target pushbacks.

The leading leasing company says businesses need to consider specific operational challenges and how to overcome these, sooner rather than later, to ensure a smooth transition ahead of sustainability deadlines.

Despite the Government’s decision last year to delay the ban of the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030 to 2035, businesses are still under pressure to improve

fleet sustainability. The Department for Transport has confirmed its zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) mandate will still be going ahead as planned. This means automotive manufacturers must ensure 70% of all new vans sold in the UK by 2030 carry zero emissions. As a result, the availability of petrol and diesel vans will steadily decline until the 2035 deadline, with fewer new ICE LCVs available each year.

Paul Starkey, Product ManagerCommercial Vehicles at VWFS Fleet, commented: “Many businesses have this misconception that, with the delay on the 2030 ICE vehicle ban, they can slow down their EV transition.

“Unfortunately, they still don’t have as long as they might think to transition their commercial vehicles to electric alternatives.

“Depending on a company’s fleet

replacement policy they could have only a couple of replacement cycles before new ICE vehicles are not available to them. With the ZEV mandate, we’ll see fewer ICE vehicle options as manufacturers focus on electric vehicles.

“Companies should already be moving to electric vehicles where possible to ensure any change is well planned and managed, not a sudden sea change of their fleet.”

Top considerations for LCV fleets looking to switch to electric

To support businesses in making the switch, VWFS Fleet shares the top considerations that LCV fleet operators need to make:

Start collating LCV telematics data

“There’s definitely more operational knowledge needed,” shares Paul. “Even

though there are great environmental benefits to adopting an EV fleet, there are logistical challenges that need to be addressed beforehand, in order to prevent any bottlenecks for the business.”

Collating and analysing telematics data will give insight into an LCV’s daily mileage patterns, including distance covered and destinations/routes commonly taken. All of this data can feed into the company’s electric replacement strategy, ensuring businesses are selecting EVs that are suited to specific use cases.

Additionally, telematics data can also help to identify further potential cost savings associated with the switch to eLCVs. For example, for LCVs making frequent journeys to city centres, there may be cost savings on emissions or clean air zone fees when making the switch to electric.

Understand specific conversion needs

LCVs are adaptable to suit a whole range of business fleet needs. Many commercial vehicles will have specific conversion requirements, and some of these, such as tippers or vans transporting chilled items, rely on the vehicle’s fuel to power moving components.

When switching to eLCVs, these parts will then rely on the vehicle’s electric charge to operate, which will affect the vehicle’s overall range. As a result, fleet operators need to understand exactly how much power these components require to operate and then feed this into the eLCVs range requirements.

Additionally, businesses can also consider how else these components could be charged to further improve sustainability. For example, solar panels could potentially be fitted to a van’s roof to power its moving components, so their operation doesn’t affect the vehicle’s mileage capabilities from a single charge.

Speak to fleet experts

Getting in touch with eLCV fleet experts, such as VWFS Fleet, can help to highlight any unique considerations and challenges that individual fleets may need to overcome to ensure a successful transition. Getting ahead of the game is key.

“Companies should be looking at their data now to build a picture of which vehicles on which operations can be transitioned to electric. Look to move the easiest use cases first to gain experience, these easier use cases might not be vehicles which are due to be replaced soon so companies might need to move some vehicles around in their fleet, the important thing is to get electric vehicle experience as soon as possible.” adds Paul.

“There’s no reason why businesses shouldn’t be thinking about the logistical changes needed to adopt eLCVs today.

“The main misconception is that businesses now have plenty of time to adopt and transition to electric. However, not only does pressure remain on businesses to up their sustainability targets, but actually implementing them – especially when it comes to LCV conversions – can take a lot more planning than expected.

“That’s why it’s critical businesses with LCV fleets are thinking about transitioning to electric now, not in 2035,” concludes Paul.

Grab a slice of California sun

The VW California is the iconic camper van that makes people dream of long distance trips and far away adventure.

Now, after clocking up over 280,000 sales worldwide, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting a new generation: the New California. Based on the long version of the modern multivan, the California has been redesigned to make it more spacious, smarter, more sophisticated, more versatile and more sustainable. And yet it still follows in the design footsteps of its iconic predecessors, thus continuing one of the great automotive success stories.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has naturally kept key California details such as the pop-up roof and an interior that is carefully planned down to the smallest detail. And of course, the New California

is also the ideal VW bus for everyday use and – from one moment to the next – a camper van for life’s ultimate journeys.

All this is now achieved even more successfully with the latest powertrain, assist and infotainment systems and a new camper van architecture.

For the first time ever, all California vehicles will be equipped with two sliding doors as standard – opening up even more versatile options for use.

Another premiere in the New California is a plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive system. This means that the camper van temporarily becomes an electric vehicle, which at the same time allows long overall ranges.

Pre-sales for the New California and the future of the most successful camper van of all time start this month.

Going for gold

Brian Currie Volkswagen Van Centre in Milton Keynes has won the prestigious Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Gold Award, after being named as the number one performing Van Centre of 2023. In addition, the dealership was also named Used Van Centre of 2023. Paul Weedon, Head of Business, was overjoyed with the double win, firmly attributing to the “most fantastic team of people” at Milton Keynes. “The awards are a reflection of what we set our stalls out to achieve from the very start of 2023,” he said. “The cohesion and sheer desire to succeed and exceed from every member of the team has been the main driving force that has led us to this success. I am extremely proud of each and every person in our team, so let’s roll on with the rest of 2024 and succeed again!”

E-Transit Courier and range extender variant star for Ford

The all-electric Ford E-Transit Courier compact van made its public debut at the Commercial Vehicle Show.

Ford Pro Charging says an 11 kW AC overnight home charger can top it back up to full in 5.7 hours, and charging can be scheduled to take advantage of cheaper overnight energy using the in-vehicle touchscreen or depot charging software.

To support efficient public charging, the vehicle also offers DC fast charge capability up to 100kW, and Ford expects the system to add 54 miles of range in 10 minutes, and charge from 10-80 per cent in fewer than 35 minutes.

The E-Transit Courier also comes with a year of complimentary access to the BlueOval Charge Network, which is expected to include 500,000 public chargers by 2024.

Dimensions

Width between the rear wheel arches is 1,220mm, enabling the compact van to carry two Euro pallets for the first time, while maximum payload for the all-electric model is 700kg, with a maximum towing weight of 750kg.

In addition, customers will be able to order petrol- and diesel-engine Transit Courier models from summer 2023 for delivery before the end of the year.

Hans Schep, General Manager of Ford Pro, Europe said: “The E-Transit Courier moves its segment up a level with uncompromised EV performance, higher load capacity and fully connected support including end-to-end

charging solutions, Ford Pro E-Telematics and uptime-boosting FordLive.”

Also unveiled at the CV Show was the new extended-range E-Transit. This features an 89kWh battery, compared to the 68kWh pack in standard models, boosting range some 27% to 250 miles.

This enhanced capability makes the extended range E-Transit a compelling option for fleets that operate beyond city centres but still want to benefit from the accelerated productivity of electric, connected commercial vehicles. The powertrain will also complement converted vehicles with additional weight and auxiliary power needs.

Range is also boosted by a vapour-injected heat pump, similar to that seen on the E-Transit Custom and heating the cabin more efficiently in low temperatures to improve energy efficiency and optimise range in colder weather.

Ford engineers have significantly enhanced E-Transit’s charging performance for the extended range model. Maximum AC charge capability has been increased from 11kW to 22kW, meaning a full overnight charge is targeted to take under six hours. DC fast charging capability has been increased from 115kW to 180kW, so that a 10-minute charge can add up to 72 miles (116km) of driving range, and a 10-80 per cent charge takes approximately 28 minutes.

In addition, both standard and extended range E-Transit models from the 2024 line-up benefit from a new two-year/

unlimited distance service interval to help reduce service cost of ownership for businesses – double the current one-year interval.

They’re also supported by the Ford Pro ecosystem of charging, software, servicing and finance, which can deliver further uptime and efficiency benefits to boost productivity and reduce costs.

Hans Schep again: “The extended-range option for E-Transit is another example of the Ford Pro commitment to making high-productivity electric fleets a reality across Europe. Giving customers the option

to drive further between charges alongside a wide choice of body styles and support from Ford Pro’s connected ecosystem strengthens our position as their trusted partner for complete fleet solutions.”

The extended range E-Transit will be available globally and offered in a choice of up to 19 model variants. These include L3 and L4 lengths, van, double-cab-in-van and single chassis cab body styles, with GVMs from 3,500 kg to 4,250 kg. Maximum payload is up to 1,460kg for vans and 1,814kg for chassis cab variants, with towing weight up to 750kg for models with 3,500kg GVM.
