OUR FEBRUARY edition begins with the 2025 Company Car & Van Awards. Challenging market conditions in 2024 didn’t prevent the motoring industry from bringing out plenty of new company-friendly models and solutions for SMEs as they switch to an electric future. You can read all about our winners from page 4.

Cars

First-up is our SUV Car of the Year, the Škoda Enyaq, which has been significantly face-lifted for 2025. We breakdown the updates, which include some model changes.

OMODA is a new Chinese car name that recently entered the UK market and in this edition we test the 5, the brand’s good-looking petrol SUV.

We also drive the BYD SEAL U DM-i, the first plug-in hybrid from the Chinese brand which is really taking the market by storm.

And Mazda’s new flagship the CX-80 breaks cover as a plug-in hybrid or Skyactiv diesel. It has best-in-class safety, says Euro NCAP.

Commercials

IVECO has completely revamped its Daily range for 2025 with a new interior, better safety and new infotainment in all panel vans and chassis cabs. We spent a day at Milbrook putting

it through its paces to discover just how much better it really is.

The eTERRON 9 pick-up is MAXUS’s latest electric vehicle and it really looks the business. We spent a day driving one and found it’s the best-built MAXUS yet, and another model that is set to shake up the pick-up sector in 2025.

Two years after it was announced, the new Gen 7 Volkswagen Transporter is finally available to order. We have a feature on the range inside and will be driving one later this month, so keep your eyes peeled for our review in April.

Finally, the large electric Mercedes-Benz eSprinter takes a bow. With a 271-mile range it’s primed to take you further, and comes in a myriad of versions to suit all business needs.

Introducing the Company Car & Van Car of the Year: Peugeot 3008

With electric, plug-in and hybrid powertrains, there’s a 3008 for everyone, but it’s the E-3008 that most impresses. We believe that a company car driver is most likely to want a long range on their EV over and above anything else, and on that count alone, the E-3008, with its class-leading 422-mile battery range, is a resounding success. It is by some distance the Company Car & Van Car of the Year for 2025.

Large Car of the Year: Peugeot 5008

The Peugeot 5008 seven-seater could be the cleverest car of the year as well as our Large Car of the Year. Coming with electric, plug-in and petrol drivetrains it ticks every box for style, comfort and roominess. Even better, the E-5008 comes with a 160kW charging speed and a range of up to 416 miles, so it’s a family car that will help customers transition to electric.

Fleet Manufacturer of the Year: BMW / MINI

With a vast choice of electric and plug-in hybrids, BMW and MINI really came of age in the EV sector in 2024, cementing their position as the most forward-thinking premium brand across all car sizes.

From the new electric Mini Cooper, Countryman and Aceman to the BMW iX2, i5, i7, updated i4, iX3 and plug-in 330e, they had every company car sector covered, leaving the competition trailing behind. It’s no surprise, then, that our Company Car & Van Fleet Manufacturer of the Year is BMW and MINI.

Medium Car of the Year: MINI Countryman

The winner of our Medium Car of the Year 2025 is the MINI Countryman. It’s the largest MINI yet, but don’t let that worry you because both petrol and electric versions are best-in-class to drive, while offering decent interior space and a useful boot.

Kudos too for the inclusion of the old-school central infotainment screen and toggle buttons, which really make the Countryman stand out. A car we’d happily drive every day.

Executive Car of the Year: BMW 5 Series

The 5 Series is still brilliant to drive, combining all of its on-board tech to make everyday journeys both fun and easy. The interior has the wow factor and in electric form, the i5 is probably the best all-around electric saloon out there. If we had to choose one executive car, then the 5 Series would be it.

Car to Watch: CUPRA Tavascan

CUPRA has had a fantastic couple of years in the fleet sector, and 2025 sees that growth set to continue, with the addition of two new models. One of these is our Car to Watch 2025, the CUPRA Tavascan.

It’s the brand’s most accessible EV yet, offering impressive ride comfort and excellent interior quality, all finished off with CUPRA’s fine attention to detail. We expect to see it on plenty of customers’ shopping lists.

Premium Car of the Year: Polestar 3

Sweden’s take on the premium electric SUV market is really rather good. The Polestar 3 is beautifully designed, with amazing attention to detail. It’s also packed with tech and safety, and it’s practical, too. Add in a 390-mile range, plenty of driving fun and this decidedly different SUV knocks back several bigger name rivals to land our Premium Car of the Year 2025 title.

Plug-In Car of the Year: MG HS

The new MG HS is now more grown up and delivers inside with a high-quality cabin and improved infotainment system. An electric range of 75 miles is more good news, as is the price, which is highly competitive. With most PHEVs, if they offer a 70+ mile driving range they charge you over 50k for the privilege, while pricing on the MG HS starts at £24,995. That makes it a welcome breath of fresh air, and deservedly our Plug-in Car of the Year 2025.

SUV Car of the Year: ŠKODA Enyaq

ŠKODA is a brand that keeps on delivering, in this case a much improved electric family SUV. The Enyaq oozes quality but won’t break the bank, and comes fitted out with on-trend tech and the latest safety features. For company car drivers the BIK benefits are almost impossible to ignore, as is the 348-mile range. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s a package that fully merits being named our SUV of the Year 2025.

Manufacturer of the Year: Renault

No other manufacturer launched as many new models in 2024… and what a line-up it was, from the class-leading Master van to the Scenic E-Tech, Symbioz and Rafale cars, with all-new electric Renault 4 and 5 models landing in 2025. Congratulations, Renault, you are the Company Car & Van Manufacturer of the Year 2025.

Renault has had a fantastic couple of years and Megane E-Tech is the model that started that renaissance. Despite a raft of small electric contenders launching during 2024, it’s still one of the best small electric cars to drive, and the interior oozes class. That’s why we have no hesitation in making it our Small Car of the Year for 2025.

Small Car of the Year: Renault Megane E-Tech

Van of the Year: Renault Master

Our Van of the Year 2025 is the Renault Master. Offered with diesel and electric powertrains, it’s an evolution for Renault and is now class-leading in the large van sector. The most impressive version is the full electric Master E-Tech which is priced like a diesel van, offers an excellent 285-mile driving range and comes with a payload of up to 1,625kg. A runaway winner.

Large Van of the Year: Renault Master

The Master is our Large Van of the Year for 2025.

It’s offered in a plethora of versions, with loadspaces of 11 to 14.8 cubic metres, a 40mm wider opening at the sliding side door and 100mm longer load length than the previous version Inside, you get premium-feel materials and a 25% increase in total cabin storage space. It also comes with lower CO2 , and with 20 driver assistance systems, it’s incredibly safe, too.

Van Leasing Company of the Year: Vanaways

When Chris Jakeways set up Vanaways in 2017, his vision was to offer a one-stop shop for LCV and pick-up leasing.

Free delivery and competitive rates was a start, but it’s the people at Vanaways who really make a difference. They offer expert industry knowledge and listen to the customer, where nothing is too much trouble.

Pick-Up of the Year: Isuzu D-Max

When a pick-up wins an award four years in a row, it must be doing something right – and the D-Max definitely is!

It’s available in a myriad of conversions and in a range of single, extended and double cab models to suit all customer needs.

It’ll do the rough stuff well while also tackling the urban jungle, too.

Act fast to secure D-Max BIK boost, says Isuzu

Isuzu UK has launched a campaign to urge buyers to secure their new Isuzu D-Max before April 2025, after which double cab pick-ups will be reclassified as cars for tax purposes.

The change was announced in the Autumn Budget 2024, when the Chancellor said that double cab pick-ups will no longer be classified as commercial vehicles for Benefit in Kind (BIK) and Capital Allowances (CA) purposes. Instead, they will be treated as cars, leading to increased tax liabilities for buyers and businesses alike.

In Isuzu’s campaign, a D-Max is seen sharing a thought bubble stating: ‘From 6th April 2025, I’ll identify as a car!’ The campaign serves as a reminder for businesses and buyers to act now and take advantage of the current tax benefits before the new rules come into force.

The new rules

What are the new changes, and how does this affect double cab pick-ups?

Benefit in Kind (BIK): From 6th April 2025, double cab pick-ups will be treated as cars for BIK purposes, shifting from the current flat rate of £3,960 to a variable rate based on CO2 emissions.

Capital Allowances (CA): From 1st April 2025, these vehicles will also be classified as cars for CA purposes, moving away from their prior status as ‘plant and machinery.’

However, double cab pick-ups purchased or ordered before 6th April 2025 for BIK purposes (and 1st April 2025 for CA purposes) will retain their commercial vehicle classification until the earlier of disposal,

lease expiry, or 5th April 2029.

Are single and extended cab pick-ups affected?

No. Single and extended cab pick-ups remain classified as commercial vehicles.

Does this impact VAT reclaim eligibility?

No. VAT treatment for double cab pick-ups remains unchanged.

Does this impact road tax?

No. Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), also known as road tax or car tax, remains unchanged for double cab pick-ups.

What happens if I purchase a double cab pick-up after April 2025?

Vehicles purchased after this date will be subject to the new tax treatment, leading to higher costs for buyers and businesses.

So act now!

ŠKODA builds on award-winning Enyaq’s success with new design and fresh styling

ŠKODA is set to broaden the appeal of its multi-award-winning Enyaq range with a fully updated new model that introduces a striking new design and multiple engineering enhancements.

Available in both SUV and Coupé forms, the new Enyaq will arrive in the second quarter of 2025 in the brand’s Modern Solid design language, blending robustness and functionality with a fresh take on Škoda styling. The design changes align the new Enyaq with the Elroq to give the brand’s all-electric offerings a powerful and unmistakeable new look.

The new line-up consists of four derivatives, all featuring more standard equipment than the variants they replace. Customers can choose from SE L, Edition and SportLine trim levels, and fine-tune their car with Design Selections and option packs.

Striking new look

The new Enyaq is distinguished by a new exterior design that full embraces Škoda’s acclaimed Modern Solid design language. At the front, the standout Tech-Deck Face, finished in glossy black, houses sensors for systems like the radar and front camera. Škoda lettering now replaces the badge on the bonnet while a bold, illuminated strip, called illuminated Teck-Deck face (standard from SportLine trim), links the upper LED Matrix headlights. Just below, horizontal LED modules below deliver a new interpretation of Škoda’s four-eyed SUV light signature.

Basic headlights are fully LED, while the Matrix units include animations tied to the Tech-Deck. At the rear, the signature C-shaped LED tail lights offer animated indicators (standard from Edition trim) and Coming Home/Leaving Home sequences.

The Enyaq SUV and Coupé also feature larger, aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches. A new Olive Green metallic joins the colour palette, complementing two solid and seven metallic paint options.

Inside, the Enyaq builds on the strengths of the original design and delivers exceptional practicality and a large boot. The updated model features a redesigned steering wheel that now features Škoda lettering in place of the brand logo.

A 5-inch Digital Cockpit and 13’’ Infotainment screen comes as standard, with a head-up display featuring augmented reality available (standard on SportLine).

Škoda has also improved the design and functionality of the MySkoda app, which allows owners to fine-tune the settings of their car and make use of connected services. For example, Powerpass is now seamlessly

integrated into the app, providing access to over 800,000 charging points across Europe.

Improved aerodynamic performance

The new Enyaq is more than just a pretty face. The new design elements deliver an improvement in aerodynamic performance. Thanks to a slimmer Tech-Deck Face, new wheel designs, revised air curtains and improved radiator and bumper integration, drag coefficient (Cd) is now just 0.245 for the Enyaq SUV, down from 0.264. The Coupé achieves a remarkable 0.229, making it the most aerodynamic model in Škoda’s line-up.

Longer range and faster charging

The refreshed Škoda Enyaq is available with two battery sizes and three powertrain options, catering to a wide range of driver needs. The new entry-level Enyaq 60 features a 63kWh (59kWh net) battery paired with a 204PS (150kW) rear-mounted electric motor, delivering 310Nm of torque and a top speed of 99mph.

For drivers requiring a longer driving range, the Enyaq 85 uses an 82kWh (77kWh net) battery and a more powerful 286PS (210kW) motor, offering 545Nm of torque and a higher top speed of 111mph.

And for those seeking all-wheel drive, the Enyaq 85x adds a second motor on the front axle. While power and torque remain the same as the rear-wheel drive Enyaq 85, the system enhances traction and stability,

dynamically adjusting front-wheel power to optimise efficiency.

The new Enyaq 60 has a WLTP combined driving range figure of up to 268 miles, while the Enyaq 85 offers up to 359 miles of WLTP range for the SUV model and up to 365 miles (WLTP) for the Coupé variant. All-wheeldrive 85x models deliver up to 332 miles of WLTP range for the SUV and up to 334 (WLTP) for the Coupé.

The Enyaq 60 supports charging rates of up to 165kW, replenishing its battery from 10 to 80 per cent in just 24 minutes at DC fast chargers. The larger-battery Enyaq 85x can handle up to 175kW, achieving a 10-80 per cent charge in 28 minutes. All variants support AC inputs at up to 11kW for home or workplace charging.

Specifications: Enyaq SE L 60

The entry-level Enyaq SE L 60 comes with a Loft interior Design Selection, LED front and rear lights, heated front seats and steering wheel and Tri-zone climate control. Despite being the entry level model in the new Enyaq range, the SE L also features Keyless entry, Predictive adaptive cruise control, Electric boot with Virtual pedal and rear-view camera with front and rear sensors.

Wireless charging with cooling and Drive mode select are also included as standard.

The Enyaq Edition 60, Edition 85 and Enyaq SportLine 85x all add to this. Edition variants come with Matrix LED headlights and animated indicators, electric driver’s seat with massage function, power adjustment lumbar support for the passenger seats.

As befits its sporty nature, the SportLine 85x comes with 20-inch Vega black alloy wheels, sports bumpers and gloss black styling details as standard. Inside, SportLine drivers benefit from a head-up display (HUD), front sports seats and steering wheel.

OMODA 5’s quality has its rivals rattled

The latest OMODA proves that China’s ability to introduce new names to the auto sector which quickly become major players shows no sign of abating. Andrew Walker got behind the wheel of its 5 model to see what the fuss is about

OWNED by Chery, OMODA is a new Chinese car name that’s landed in the UK. You might not have heard of them but this is no early day start-up; it employs 80,000 people and has over 12 million customers. It has launched two models in the UK: the OMODA E5 and the OMODA 5, the first an electric, the second a petrol SUV. We put the OMODA 5 through its paces and here’s what you need to know.

Model choice and price

As with its electric stablemate, the 5 will be offered in the UK in two trim levels: the Comfort, which costs from £25,235, and the Noble priced from £27,000.

Engine and performance

The Omoda 5 is powered by a 183bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that’s paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox .The engine offers decent performance and power with 187 PS torque of 275NM, a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 128mph.

Driving modes

There are three driving modes, Eco, Normal and Sport, and each does what you’d expect. Eco lowers power and increases range, Normal offers more power and Sport increases that difference again.

Fuel economy and CO2

On the combined cycle you can expect to achieve around 37.7 mpg. That comes at a cost of 170g/km of CO2 emissions

Exterior

The front features the brand’s name above a massive hexagon -shaped grille. The signature ‘X’ Shape slim LED headlights and horizontal blade daytime running lights complete the look. At the rear there’s a large roof spoiler, LED rear lights and the tailgate is slightly bulbous like a Qashqai, which adds some heft. The OMODA logo sits proudly in the centre between the light clusters. It’s unmistakably a medium SUV, currently the most popular sized car in the UK.

Inside

Chinese brands have in the past cut corners inside their cars, but not so at OMODA. Everything you can touch and see in the cabin is made of good quality plastics and the finish is impressive too, although the grey/black/chrome colour combo plays it safe.

Up front, the driver gets a nice high driving position, giving good all-around visibility. You can’t adjust the seats down, though, so if you’re tall you may find your head touches the headlining. The rear window is quite shallow and the C pillars are large, so the rear view is slightly compromised.

Infotainment

OMODA has done a good job here as the 5 is kitted out with twin 10.3” screens that flow across the top of the dashboard. The one in front of the driver displays speed, range and all the usual car information. In the centre sits the touchscreen, where you can access the car’s own SatNav, DAB radio, telephone, car settings and connect wirelessly in our case to CarPlay. It looks good and the icons and set-up are logical.

This isn’t surprising when you realise that it uses the Qualcomm 8155 ‘Snapdragon’ chip, which offers rapid responsiveness to user inputs and supports 4G connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot and over-the-air software updates.

Furthermore, OMODA has included a natural voice control using a virtual assistant which comes with an animal avatar.

Controls

Thankfully the 5 features some virtual and physical controls. A row of buttons for commonly used features, such as climate control, are integrated into the centre console. In front of the driver is a handy 7” head-up display, so you can keep an eye on your speed.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto feature with a 50W fan-cooled wireless charging pad for two phones, conveniently located in the centre binnacle for smartphone integration.

Safety

A raft of 17 ADAS aids come as standard. These include, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Brake and Door Open Warning.

Enhancing the body structure is a complement of 11 airbags, including a centre airbag to mitigate the effect of any collision between the driver and front seat passenger.

Practicality

The cabin offers some decent storage and usability. Good news is that there’s a line of short cut buttons behind the twin cup holders in the centre binnacle for the air con, the demisters, hazards, driving modes and to turn the infotainment screen on and off. So no fussing with the touchscreen, which we like.

Behind the buttons is a small cover cubby and you get an armrest with storage beneath, plus twin USBs, twin cup holders, a rear fold down armrest, decent sized door pockets and a mid-sized glove box.

The boot comes with a 380-litre luggage compartment, which extends to 1,075 litres with the rear seats folded, both competitive. Front seat passengers get good space, but in the rear if you’re 6 foot or above, head height isn’t fantastic, perhaps as result of the sloping roofline on the OMODA 5.

Chassis and suspension

From the outset, the OMODA 5 has been engineered to accommodate both electric powertrains and internal combustion engines. Everything from spring and damper rates, steering ratios, anti-roll bar stiffness, bush rates, summer and winter tyres, and brake pad materials have been developed to deliver the expected European ride, handling and agility.

Driving

On a series of tests routes close to CC&V HQ in Cheshire, we were able to put the OMODA 5 through its paces. The first thing to say is that it’s actually good to drive, thanks in the main to the 190hp engine, which offers decent performance in all situations. The suspension does a good job of handling poor road surfaces, and road and engine noise are well contained. All-in-all, a decent first effort

Driving on rural roads between Wilmslow and Knutsford we discovered that the E5 rides well, hiding the battery bulk, although there is some body lean in and out of tight corners. Progress is quiet enough and the dashboard layout and steering wheel controls become familiar quickly.

The gear lever has a tendency to accidentally slide into the manual setting by mistake and there’s an awful lot of power from the off so it takes a while to work out how softly to depress the accelerator pedal to avoid jerky progress.

We were following the car’s on-board SatNav via our iPhone, which was easy to do. The voice activation was on, so instructed us not only which way to go, but aided us in Google Maps by giving us the location of speed cameras and school zones, as well as informing us if we were breaking the speed limit.

A motorway section allowed the OMODA 5 to demonstrate its best qualities, namely as a comfortable motorway cruiser. With standard adaptive cruise control you can sit back and let the car do the work. Compared to many more expensive and smaller UK rivals the 5 really does offer a lot of bang for your buck. The on-board safety includes car visualisation, which shows the vehicles around you. It works really well and is definitely an impressive addition to this

low-priced car.

The multi-adjustable driver’s seat let me get comfortable in no time, with a reach and rake steering wheel also featuring. I found the front passenger seat a little high and although it adjusts it doesn’t go down as low as I’d have liked. The mirror too is a little odd, offering a slightly skewed view that includes the edge of the front seats, but we are being picky, especially when you consider the cost of the Noble model we were driving. And it’s the price coupled to the goodies that you get with the 5 that will really sell the OMODA, rather than how it drives or handles.

Pros

Incredibly well specified with excellent on-board tech and safety. Good looking from all angles. Drives well and handles our terrible roads with aplomb. It’s also very, very good value for money.

Cons

Fuel economy is distinctly average. The high driving position won’t suit all. It’s not as refined as most European petrol cars. The fact that it’s a new name to the market will always go against it for a while.

CC&V VERDICT

The electric E5 is more likely to appeal to the company car sector, and you’d be forgiven for writing the petrol 5 off as having high CO2 emissions and therefore costly company car tax. However, as salary sacrifice and opting out among company car drivers increases, we think that the 5 could hit the sweet spot for those customers who want a C-sector SUV at a B-sector price. Compared to most of the competition it’s incredibly well specified, with a suite of safety features. It’s a little vanilla inside and some may need a bit of time to buy into a new brand, but with pioneering Chinese marques such as MG and BYD already doing well, we see no reason for the OMODA 5 not succeed, too.

Mazda creates another marvel with stunning, versatile CX-80

MAZDA took the wraps off the all-new CX-80 SUV last spring, with models hitting the UK in the autumn.

It’s the latest model from Mazda’s Large Product Group, which includes the Mazda CX-60 and North American market CX-70 and CX-90 SUVs, and will be the manufacturer’s flagship model in Europe.

All cars from the design team share the same longitudinal front-engine rear-wheel drive mechanical layout.

Featuring three-row seating the CX-80 is the most spacious SUV ever offered by Mazda in Europe, and with its high-quality cabin, technically advanced drivetrains and elegant design is created to challenge established premium brands in the European market.

Powered by the same engines as the Mazda CX-60, there is a choice of plug-in hybrid - which combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery – or Mazda’s advanced in-line six-cylinder 254ps 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine.

Across both powertrain options, the Mazda CX-80 is exclusively matched to all-wheel drive.

Dimensionally, the CX-80 has a larger wheelbase by 250mm compared with the CX-60, allowing it to deliver the space needed for a practical three-row interior. Furthermore, to ensure passenger comfort, the CX-80 is 26mm taller than the CX-60. However, with an identical width to the CX-60, the CX-80 retains familiar styling and

nose on profile of its smaller sibling.

There are five grades available in the UK: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus. All are well specced, with option packs to allow customers to tailor their seat layouts and equipment. Pricing starts from £48,920.

seat, two captain’s seats with a walkthrough space, or two captain’s seats with a fixed centre console. The seven-seat layout with the middle row-bench are standard and is the biggest seller in the UK, while the two six-seat layout configurations are optional.

Crucially, thanks to the CX-80’s increased wheelbase, shoulder room, headroom, hip point spacing and front to second row couple distance measurements have all increased compared to the CX-60.

Comfort and tech highlights include Alexa in-car voice control of music, airconditioning, navigation and third-party apps.

sibling but it’s in profile where the expression of elegance has been refined by taking full advantage of the CX-80’s increased length to create an imposing and cohesive design. The extended side windows feature thicker surrounds that are straighter at the D pillar to emphasise the presence of the third-row of seating, while the seamlessly integrated roof rails further highlight the length of the CX-80’s cabin.

The CX-80 also sees the introduction of two new Mazda paint colours to the UK market: Artisan Red and Melting Copper. Like the ever-popular Soul Red Crystal colour, Artisan Red is another colour created with Mazda’s Takuminuri painting technology. In all, the Mazda CX-80 will be offered in nine body colours: Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Platinum Quartz, Arctic White, Rhodium White, Machine Grey, Soul Red Crystal, Artisan Red and Melting Copper.

Plug-in SEAL is a bold bid to mix it with the big boys

BYD recently launched its first non-EV, the SEAL U DM-i – it’s first plug-in hybrid. We got to spend sone time in one after some heavy snow, and here’s what we found out.

What is it?

It’s a five-door compact SUV powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol and e-motor. There’s also an AWD version which features two e-motors. Three trim levels are available: Boost, Comfort and Design. Boost is front-wheel drive only, as is the Comfort which features a larger 27kWh battery, while the Design combines a petrol engine with two electric motors. Pricing is competitive, starting at just over £30,000.

Exterior

The front features slim corner headlights and LEDs, with the BYD logo front and centre. The rear comes with a full width light strip and a narrow rear window.

Inside

The quality is excellent for a car at this price, with soft-touch materials on the dashboard, centre console and doors. The seats are finished in vegan faux leather and you even get a glass roof on all versions.

Equipment and tech

A customisable 12.3” TFT instrument cluster and head-up display are standard. The highlight is the rotating 15.6” touchscreen although CarPlay only works in landscape. The infotainment system is simple to use and features voice recognition, integrated Apps including Apple CarPlay, SatNav, DAB, Over the Air Updates, plus smartphone wireless charging. It also has shortcuts to some climate control adjustments, allowing you to adjust the temperature via buttons on the steering wheel.

Our test car, the Comfort, featured heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel, keyless start and entry, remote climate control and an electric tailgate.

Driving modes

Boost features four Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow, while Comfort adds Sand and Muddy. With us having to negotiate 15cm of snow on our road the Snow function was most welcome, adding some heft to the steering and reducing the car’s power to help on icy roads. Overall, though, there’s not a huge difference between each one.

Practicality

Standard fare comes in the form of a boot parcel shelf, a 12v socket, front centre armrest, two cup holders, large door pockets front and rear, a decent sized glove box and a fold down rear armrest with two cupholders within. The cabin is spacious with plenty of room for five adults. The glass roof make the cabin bright and airy.

The boot offers from 425-1,440 litres, which is lower than some competitors.

Performance and range

The all-wheel drive Design comes with 319bhp and just 5.9 seconds for 0-62mph. The 2WD versions offer a more sober 215bhp and a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds.

Entry-level Boost comes with a claimed range of up to 50 miles of electric driving, while the more powerful Design offers 43 miles. The mid-range Comfort has a larger 26.6kWh battery so is the best bet; it has a 77-mile electric range.

Combined economy is from 235 –313 mpg, but as with all figures of this nature, it’s not serious. Even if you plug-in every day and utilise the battery for local driving, any longer motorway journeys will see this drop to a much more likely 50mpg.

Charging

Plug-in at home on a 7.4kWh charger and the larger 26.6kWh battery will take four hours to fill. The smaller 18.3kWh battery fills in just under three hours.

Driving

Our test coincided with heavy snowfall so we were limited in our driving distance and time, but we travelled far enough to learn that the U DM-i is a perfectly good plug-in hybrid, and certainly no better or worse than more expensive competitors such as the Tiguan, Kuga and CX-60, while being priced closer to the MG HS PHEV.

It’s not a proper PHEV but a rangeextender, with the petrol engine driving the wheels and the electric motors doing all the work. Therefore it drives in most cases more like an EV than a plug-in. It’s quiet around town and on the motorway the engine is smooth and feels refined. Only on tighter undulating roads do you realise that there’s little steering feel or feedback, which means you get a bit of wallowing through the bends.

Pros

Very well screwed together, competitively priced, room for five adults in the cabin and 50mpg + guaranteed.

Cons

Vanilla looks, suffers from the SUV PHEV curse over poor road surfaces. 8% BIK will be going up in April.

CC&V VERDICT

BYD proves yet again that it can play with the big boys. The build quality is its best feature, and it’s very well priced. Company car drivers who still need a large plug-in could do worse than look at the U!

All-new Transporter delivers big gains in ride, load and versatility

VOLKSWAGEN Commercial Vehicles opened the order books on its all-new Transporter Panel Van in mid-January, with first deliveries from April. Prices start from £30,9951 for the TDI variant and £41,9651 for the BEV model, or just £399 per month on Business Contract Hire.

All customers will benefit from an enhanced warranty and service plan at no extra cost. Called the Volkswagen 5+ Promise it comprises five services, two MOTs, a five-year warranty, and five years’ roadside assistance.

While initially available only as a panel van, Kombi and Shuttle variants will follow in spring for orders, and double-cab variants to complete the line-up will arrive later in the year. All variants are available as either standard or long wheelbase, in a choice of three highly-specified trims – Commerce, Commerce Plus and Commerce Pro.

To celebrate order books opening, until March 31, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is offering a number of compelling finance offers. On Solutions Personal Contract Plan, the all-new Transporter is available with 6.9% APR Representative and a £2,500 deposit contribution on diesel derivatives. An innovative powertrain range

The all-new Transporter has a wider range of drive options than ever before. For the first time, you can choose between a plug-in hybrid (eHybrid), all-electric (eTransporter), or turbodiesel (TDI) engine.

Whether it’s the latest turbodiesel engines, available in three power levels – 110, 150, and 170 PS with 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic gearboxes – the all-electric drive with power outputs ranging

from 136 to 218 PS, or the new plug-in eHybrid option which combines a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a total of 230 PS (coming in 2026), the all-new Transporter delivers performance with versatility.

The e-Transporter and e-Caravelle launch with 100 kW (136 PS), 160 kW (218 PS) and 210 kW (286 PS). The capacity of their battery is 64 kWh (net).

All-electric models come with rear-wheel drive, with an all-wheel drive version available soon.

Diesel, hybrid and electric drive

The TDI engines deliver 81 kW (110 PS), 110 kW (150 PS) and 125 kW (170 PS). The 125 kW TDI is always combined with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is optionally available for the 110 kW TDI as an alternative to the 6-speed manual gearbox.

The TDI models from 110 kW can be ordered with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A system power of 171 kW (232 PS) characterises the plug-in hybrid drive combined with an automatic gearbox (eHybrid).

Safety first

Safety is at the forefront of the all-new Transporter. Standard equipment includes Autonomous Emergency Braking to detect potential collisions, Lane Assist to help keep you on track, and side curtain airbags to

provide additional protection in the event of a collision.

Other features include Dynamic Road Sign Display and Intelligent Speed Assist, ensuring your drivers are always aware of speed limits and road conditions. When it comes to manoeuvring in tight spaces, the standard front and rear parking sensors, along with a rear-view camera, will make parking easier and help reduce the risk of costly parking scrapes.

Maxus nails it as eTERRON 9 builds on T90’s success

IT’S ONLY been two years since Maxus launched its first electric pick-up, the T90. It has been and gone, though, to be replaced in double-quick time by a new model, the eTERRON 9. Andrew Walker spent an enjoyable morning in Liverpool putting one to the test.

What is it?

It’s the second electric pick-up from Maxus, replacing the T90 EV. Two versions are offered. The Luxury is priced from £53,000 while the Premium costs from £56,000.

Practicality

It may be an electric pick-up, meaning there’s a heavy battery fitted underneath the cab and load floor, but this doesn’t prevent it offering a 620kg payload and towing up to 3,500kg braked or 750kg unbraked. Looking at its length, width, height and load bed dimensions, they mirror a standard diesel pick-up, so it’s competitive.

Electric range and battery

The eTERRON 9 comes with a 265-mile range. This is courtesy of a 102.2kWh battery which produces 325kW of maximum power. The dual-motor set-up features an 170hp e-motor at the front and 272hp system at the rear axle, generating total output of 442hp.

Off road capability and performance

The eT9 is 4WD and features an All-Terrain System. Options include Normal, Mud, Tow and Sand. Customers can also configure steering, engine power and stability to their

personal preferences. It’s performance can best be described as brisk, as the 0-62mph takes just five seconds. Top speed is 118mph.

Exterior

The front features a massive Maxus logo across the front grille. There are vertical side LED light intakes while the rear load bed area is very similar to what you would find on most pick-ups. The tailgate is heavy and Maxus has included an automatic unlocking and push-power close to shut it, which is great. The bonnet can also be opened and closed this way.

There’s a large Maxus logo right across the rear, a high-mounted stop light and a step in the bumper to allow for easier access. You also get a slim light that runs across the width of the tailgate, finished off with two vertical light clusters on each corner. The sides feature black steps and a chrome low door protector. Front and rear bumpers are chunky and black. It looks more like a North American truck than a European pick-up.

Inside

At CC&V we’ve watched the growth of Maxus over the past few years with interest, and it’s the inside of the eT9 that illustrates just how far the company has come in such a short time. In effect, you’re sitting in a premium car cabin, with both the dashboard top, front and centre binnacle hewn from stone.

The highlight inside is a massive dual screen consisting of a 12.3” cluster and 12.3” central touch screen that stretches across the dashboard top. It reminded me of the

set-up in the latest Hyundai Santa Fe. There’s no gear lever; instead, you’re presented with a right side steering wheel stalk with a simple Reverse, Neutral, Park or Drive option. The steering wheel also features switches for cruise control on the left, and on the right they work the infotainment, hands-free phone, voice control and heated steering wheel.

Located between the front seats is a massive armrest-cum-wireless phone charger where the 4x4 switch is located. Here you can connect your Smartphone via Apple CarPlay, utilising the wireless charging pad. Or plug in via the two front and two rear Type-A or Type-C USB inputs. Separate climate controls are located underneath the screen with slim air vents above.

Look up and you’ll notice that the rear view mirror offers a streaming image via a rear external camera. With the typical limited view from a pick-up’s rear window, this is another big tick for the eT9.

Cabin practicality

There are 20 cabin storage spaces, including large door pockets, a glove box and space beneath the centre armrest. eTERRON 9 comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality as standard. There are 2.2kW sockets in the front trunk and on the pick-up bed, plus an external 6.6kW connection. This means you can connect power tools easily, where extension cables won’t go. Comfort

The front seats are electrically adjustable, with even a massage function on top-spec Premium. Luxury gets PVC seats, Premium models, leather.The driver and passenger are cocooned between the centre binnacle with loads of head and legroom and space in the rear is really good, so three adults should find it comfortable. Rear air con is also offered and the charging cable bag can be stored behind the rear seats or in the front trunk if preferred.

Safety

Both versions come with the latest safety features. These include a 360 degree camera, front/rear parking sensors, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Lane Keeping, Speed Limit information, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Collision Warning, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Intelligent High Beam control and driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags and front to rear curtain airbags.

Charging

The eTERRON 9’s large battery gives it an excellent range. The caveat, though, is that it will take longer to charge, approximately 12 hours from 5-100% on a 7kWh home charger with 11kW capacity fitted to both versions. That time suggests a DC charger capable of 115kW speeds is a better bet, as then a 20-80% charge will take only 45 minutes.

As usual, our advice is to get a home charger, plug-in overnight when electricity is cheaper and get some faster chargers at your workplace, too. Driving comfort

We drove the eTERRON 9 on the motorway and around Liverpool city centre. Apart from the electric whine when you first accelerate, it’s very quiet, eerily so when compared to a standard diesel pick-up.

Up front the ride is quite firm. We had no one sat in the rear but we’d guess that the heavy battery underneath the cabin floor will curb every pick-up’s biggest flaw, that they are a bit bouncy for rear passengers when unladen. The battery weight should deaden this nicely, which is one of the reasons why we reckon it’s very difficult to complain about anything that the ET9 does on road. The cabin

is quiet and comfortable, the dashboard and switches are easy to use and understand, and overall it’s a well-mannered ride.

Infotainment

The screen itself is clear and bright. Our only complaint is that the menus for driving styles, connection and the sound system are on the left, which is a bit of a reach for the driver.

The infotainment connections for Apple CarPlay were a little temperamental as you need to set yourself up on the system first, which we didn’t have time to do. Otherwise using the DAB radio was fine and the inclusion of eight speakers on our Premium model was another nice surprise.

On the road

On our drive around Liverpool city centre we were impressed. Despite being long and wide it never feels big, thanks to the light power steering. And with the standard driving modes of Eco, Normal and Sport, you’re never short of instant power to nip in and out of urban traffic.

On the motorway the eT9 cruises like a large saloon and over decent tarmac feels composed, even relaxing. As with pretty much all EVs, the vehicle weight shows itself on poor road surfaces, hardly surprising with

a CVW of 2,880kg. But it does not spoil the ride, and the eTERRON 9 feels more like a premium EV car than a diesel pick-up.

Pros

Currently the only 4WD electric pick-up you can buy in the UK. That’s a huge pro! Decent payload and load-bed area. Electric range and charging speeds are impressive. Very well equipped, quiet and surprisingly comfortable. Build quality is exceptional.

Cons

We’ve yet to take it off-road and perhaps the motor-battery combo may affect ground clearance and useability. Payload of 620kg is compromised by battery weight. At £53,000 + VAT it’s not cheap.

CC&V VERDICT

Maxus won the race to get an electric pick-up to market with the T90 – but it was not 4WD, which is a key in this sector. The new eTERRON puts that right, and then some. It’s frankly miles better and illustrates just how far Maxus has come in improving its vehicles. It’s expensive to buy outright, so leasing will be the best way to get into one, and the 620kg payload may put some off but not, we think, utility or road maintenance companies, who don’t usually require a 1,000kg carrying capacity. But the key has to be a lack of competition; no-one else will get an electric pick-up to the UK until 2026 at the earliest, so Maxus can make hay while the sun shines.

eSprinter races straight to the top of the CV class

2024 saw the arrival of an all-new eSprinter and Company Car & Van was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of one to find out what’s changed – and how it’s improved.

The latest model comes with almost three times the driving range of the Mk1 eSprinter it replaces, and there are a number of other improvements. Here’s what we found out.

What’s new?

With the addition of a 113kWh battery the eSprinter range is now as high as 271 miles. And there’s also another version powered by an 81kWh battery that’s good for 185 miles. There’s also a new brake regeneration system with an ‘auto’ mode and an updated MBUX infotainment system.

Model choice

The original eSprinter came in one spec, Progressive ,and one size, L2 H2. With eSprinter Mk 2, however, as well as two batteries there are also two vehicle choices, – panel van and chassis, two trim levels in PRO or SELECT, two vehicle lengths, L2 and L3, and two motors, 100kW or 150kW.

Specifications

There are plenty of driver-friendly features from the entry model, including the MBUX multimedia system with 10.25” touchscreen, DAB, Bluetooth, electric parking brake, air-con, a heated driver’s seat with armrest, a multifunction steering wheel and a double passenger seat. Double side doors open to 270 degrees, and there’s a full head bulkhead, loading bay wall lining, a wooden floor and a towing eye rear. SELECT adds a leather steering wheel, a comfort driver’s seat with lumbar support, a driver’s head restraint, twin cup holders, a lidded stowage compartment, high beam ASSIST, LED headlamps and a charging package dashboard.

Infotainment

Latest version runs the updated MBUX system with 10.25” touchscreen, AM/FM/ DAB radio, Bluetooth, voice control, over the air updates, a wi-fi hotspot and a multimedia interface with 3X USB C ports. With the £45 Smartphone Integration Package you also get wireless connected Apps for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Charging

Charging speeds have improved, with 11kW AC charging and 115kW DC charging offered. Charging times for the 113kWh model are from 0-100% in 11 hours on an 11kWh wall

box, and if using DC charging you can go from 10-80% in just 42 minutes at the maximum 115kW charging speed.

For the smaller 81kWh battery version, these times are reduced to 8 hours and 32 minutes respectively, with home charging on a 7.4kWh charger taking 12.3 hours.

As ever utilise an EV charging electricity tariff and plug-in as much as you can overnight when rates are cheaper.

Driving modes and brake recuperation

Normal, Eco and Max Range: Normal mode replicates normal driving conditions, so there’s no brake regen offered and travelling in this mode will use the battery up faster. Eco and Max Range extend battery life.

There are also four regen levels, activated by a paddle on the steering wheel.

Exterior and interior

Not much has changed outside, while inside, factor in a neat and tidily designed matt black interior, hard wearing seat fabric, a multi-adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel and the lovely clutter-free dashboard with the centre infotainment screen in the centre. The touchscreen and its functions do take a little getting used to, but they are not as complicated as on most modern cars.

Practicality

The big, heavy battery is a payload issue. Mercedes has classified all 115kWh versions with a 4.25 tonne gvw, and one 81kWh model, the 420 van L3 Pro, too. The smaller 81kWh battery versions come with either a 3.5 tonne or 4.15 tonne gvw.

Driving Drives amazingly well for a vehicle that’s nearly 4.5m long. Electrically assisted steering is a major plus, making urban driving super-easy. Very comfortable.

Performance and driving range

The L3 Select 414 panel van promised a 270-mile WLTP combined driving range. We drove 75 miles at an average of 3.2 miles per kW but used only 62 miles of range, taking advantage of the brake regen.

Pros

Massively improved battery range. Lovely comfortable ride and cabin. Packed with safety features and the latest connectivity.

Cons

For anyone who passed their driving test after 1997, the largest battery version can’t be driven on a normal licence. Compromised payload for some. It is expensive.

CC&V VERDICT

Excellent large electric van. By increasing the range Mercedes-Benz has solved the biggest problem with the eSprinter in a single blow. That heavy battery does cause problems for drivers born after 1980 who don’t have a higher class licence. It is expensive, but it is superb quality, and when compared with the Iveco eDaily and Ford E-Transit, it’s actually pretty competitive.

New Daily gains a hi-tech boost, and there’s payload increase, too

The IVECO Daily was given a comprehensive upgrade last year, and Company Car & Van spent a day at Millbrook taking a look at the new model. Here’s what we found out...

What’s new?

IVECO has made the Daily a much more competitive option for CV fleets. Improved connectivity is standard across the range and there are improved cabin ergonomics and upgraded on-board technology, as well as new connectivity-enabled services.

There’s also an increase to the vehicle’s payload, with new rear leafspring suspension enabling the vehicle to carry heavier loads with a performance comparable to the double-leaf suspension.

Model choice

You’d have to put this down in one word: extensive. Three wheelbases, five body lengths and three roof heights, and that’s before you decide whether to go for a panel van, chassis cab, box van or crew cab. Oh, and there’s a 4×4 model, too.

The Daily also comes with a separate chassis and body construction, meaning that it’s able to deal with heavier stuff than most of its competitors. Gross vehicle weights range from 3.5 to 7.2 tonnes and body lengths go up to 6.75m.

Engines

Leading with a 2.3-litre diesel engine that comes with three power offerings, 116, 136 or 156hp and a more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine with 160, 176 or 207hp options, plus electric and bio-CNG versions.

Model Range

Three specifications are offered: Business, Evolution and Connect.

Inside

Here’s where you’ll discover the biggest upgrades as IVECO gets the Daily up to speed with its competitors. There’s a new one-piece dashboard which features loads of useful open and closed storage spaces designed specifically to hold a phone, a tablet or your laptop. Four USB type A+C sockets and a new wireless charger also feature plus in front of the drivers is a really useful 10.25” configurable digital info cluster.

You also get a 10” colour display integrated into the central section of the dashboard. This will connect you to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as well as enable drivers to access Apps on the display.

In-cab functions such as lights, windows and climate can be controlled with voice commands through IVECO Driver Pal, which is now integrated into the system. Tom Tom Live advanced navigation services are available.

Quality is better with memory foamcovered seats and improved plastic finishes. You also get reach and rake steering, air-con and a DAB radio fitted as standard. Plus Keyless Entry and Go is an option.

Overall we found the cabin finishes practical and hard wearing, but they’re not class leading. Entry level Business is missing features such as adaptive cruise control, climate control, automatic lights and wipers, so customers may want to consider the Evolution or Connect versions.

Connectivity

Like competitors such as Ford, IVECO has introduced an extensive telematics offering on the Daily which is free for five years.

Through the Easy Daily App or through the IVECO ON portal, fleet managers can remotely check the status of the vehicle’s functions such as Eco Mode and lock them to ensure the vehicle maximises fuel efficiency.

This feature also enables them to remotely control a vehicle’s ADAS settings at any time, to ensure all the vehicles in their fleet are set up to support driver safety. Over the Air Updates also save on downtime.

For drivers who share vans in the fleet, the Profile Setting feature means they can save their preferred set-up, cluster and infotainment settings via their Easy Daily App. They will also be able to transfer their settings to another paired vehicle.

Safety

New legislation has forced IVECO’s hand here so the Daily now comes with the most up-to-date ADAS and Level 2 Autonomous Drive features. These include Traffic Jam Assist, Advanced Lane Centring, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Intelligent Speed Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Open Door Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Blind Spot Warning and City Brake are also offered.

Specifications

As stated earlier there are three specs available, but in addition IVECO offers various packs so customers can add functionality to their Daily.

As an example the 3.5t panel van we tested included a Driving Assistant Pack, which includes a leather steering wheel, adaptive cruise control and an electric parking brake. It also featured the Comfort Plus Pack which adds an air con compressor, heated electric mirrors, a driver suspended comfort seat with armrest and lumbar adjustment, automatic climate control, voice assistant, fog lights and a two-seat front bench with an extractable table.

The Delivery Pack features City Brake, Turn Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Assist, Door Opening Warning, a reversing camera and 270 degree rear doors.

Driveaway Programme

A special mention goes to IVECO’s Driveaway Programme which enables a one-stop shop for customers to create their very own specific Daily model. There are 13 models available, so choose from a myriad of diesel, electric, panel or chassis versions, all offered with four-year, 0% finance to help customers get into a model of their choice.

Driving

While the Daily may not be quite as refined on the road as some of its rivals, it is nonetheless a comfortable and practical vehicle. We got behind the wheel of the 3.5T Hi-Matic panel van and we’d definitely recommend the automatic version, with 66% of Daily sales being auto. Having an auto box

enables far easier progress and the Hi-Matic gearbox is a beauty, enabling drivers to be more relaxed at the wheel and make light work of city situations.

A quick burst on the M1 showed it’s a cinch to drive here as well, particularly with Adaptive Cruise Control engaged. Acceleration is decent and it’s a great place to utilise the onboard infotainment as well. Apple CarPlay was set up quickly and the cabin is nicely insulated against outside road noise, too.

The new safety features work well. We tried them out on a specially constructed safety test route at Millbrook Proving Ground and the pedestrian safety ones were particularly impressive and will undoubtedly benefit drivers and fleet managers alike.

The Daily comes with new electric power steering which makes light work of urban driving. Even unladen the Daily’s ride quality impressed, and with a second drive in another panel van, this time with a load on board, this improved as well.

The new dashboard is easy to live with and the four USB inputs, two on each side, means all front passengers can connect their phones as required.

Overall refinement isn’t quite up to the Sprinter or new Renault Master, and the fuel economy isn’t fantastic either, but the floating driver’s seat is a definite winner.

Pros

Massive choice of models. Strong line-up of engine choices. On-trend tech and safety now features on all versions. The Driveway Programme is a winner.

Cons

Iveco’s diesel engines aren’t the most refined. The cabin finishes are practical and hard wearing but don’t expect soft-touch plastics.

You’ll discover that fuel economy is 34.6mpg, at best.

CC&V VERDICT

Existing Daily customers will be very happy that their favourite van is now available with the latest tech. With so many versions offered, every customer’s needs are also covered. Slight tweaks to the Hi-Matic set-up mean it is better to drive than ever, and for longer motorway journeys improved safety such as adaptive cruise control and Blind Spot Monitoring make life easier.

IVECO’s Driveway Programme is a real plus as well.
