Sign up for story time at the library By Debra Kelly

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

The staff at the Anna Reinstein Memorial Library is looking forward to starting their spring session of story time; registration is required, and will be starting soon. This spring’s theme will be Under the Sea, and

librarian Danielle White has a ton of fun stories, crafts, songs and activities planned for Cheektowaga’s youngest residents. Story hours will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays starting on January 28 and ending on May 13. Space is limited, so registration is required, but signing up before the semester starts

will register you for the entire series. For White, story hour is about much, much more than just reading with children at the library, although that certainly is a big part of it and she has an amazing selection of books and stories already lined up. For her, it’s about getting kids involved with

the stories with activities, crafts, games and even videos. All are designed to help capture imaginations and spark interests. “I really love doing story hour with the kids for a few different reasons,” she says. “I get to do all the planning, and be as creative as I want! I love coming up with crafts and finding games and other activities that I think the kids would like. I love working with them.” Each week, White will be presenting different stories and activities centered around a different sea theme, such as dolphins, whales, crabs, seahorses and sea turtles. She’ll

be introducing books like Out of the Ocean by Debra Frasier, The Jolly Steamship by Harry Rowohlt, and her favorite, The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. She also already has a series of crafts planned – kids will learn how to make their own ocean slime, paper bag whales, and stained glass dolphins. There will be a special focus on holidays like Valentine’s Day and Easter throughout the semester, all with specially selected crafts and games. For White, the opportunity to lead story hour at the library and see the same eager faces turn

up week after week is a truly amazing experience. “I aim to provide enjoyable and educational activities for the kids. I know that by doing so, I’m helping them grow socially and intellectually, and helping them to develop an appreciation for their library,” she says. “The kids and their parents are absolutely wonderful, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with.” Story hour at the Anna Reinstein Library is suitable for children between the ages of 3 and 5. To sign up, stop by the library at 2580 Harlem Road or call 892-8089.
