CPOWNY and Buffalo Zoo pair up to welcome giraffe calf

There is a new face at The Buffalo Zoo, and Community Papers of WNY Inc. is partnering with the Zoo to welcome its first Zoo-born baby in some time: A baby giraffe. The male calf arrived in the middle of the night on Oct. 24, to first-time parents A.J, 5, and Moke, 3.

Community Papers of WNY has planned a year of events and promotions, in conjunction with the Zoo, to welcome the newest addition to Western New York.

A formal press release will be released by the Zoo and CPOWNY on Dec. 15, announcing the still-anonymous

baby’s name, as well as the reasoning behind its new moniker.

The newspaper group and the Zoo are working together to host a series of events and contests, to coincide with the calf’s first year of life, and CPOWNY readers will be the first to know, and participate in, these promotions. Baby giraffes tend to remain with their parents until they are around about 22 months old, so the organization has plenty of time to spend with the new little one.

Special events will include a coloring contest, in which children in grades K-4 color a drawing of the baby giraffe and mother from a drawing template included in all community papers. A winner

will be selected from each of CPOWNY’s 25 community newspapers by random drawing and each winner will receive a family pass for the Buffalo Zoo; two parents and two children.

Next will be a contest for winning a named, baby giraffe plush animal, for sharpeyed readers. A series of eight billboards by Lamar of Buffalo are located throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area that feature the photo and name of the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe.

The first family from each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight route and cross-street billboard locations will receive the collectible baby giraffe.

According to CPOWNY Director of Marketing Dr. Janet Gane, the baby giraffe’s arrival will be heralded by a year-long calendar of events, distributed by the 25 papers, as well as WNY Health Magazine, with a article focused on conservation and preservation of the animals’ natural habitats.

“There’s a real concern about poaching of giraffes, and other animals are also in danger,” Gane explained, “So, we want to make sure our readers are aware of that, as well as the first to know about this precious little one.”

Students learn about culture

Jay and Theresa Clause, a Native American couple from the Tuscarora Reservation in Niagara County, paid a very special visit to Franklin Elementary School on Nov. 24, teaching students about Haudenosaunee culture and traditions.

Mr. Clause, who worked as a steelworker in Buffalo for many years, and Mrs. Clause, a member of the Turtle clan, have spent

years collecting a variety of Haudenosaunee artifacts such as Wampum belts, animal pelts, tools and drums, bringing many of these items for the students to see and interact with.

Mr. and Mrs. Clause began their presentation by reciting part of the Haudensaunee Thanksgiving Address, which students have read in class. They also told the story of the Great Peacemaker who, according

to tradition, brought together the Haudenosaunee, the Five Nations of the Iroquois League: the Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Seneca nations.

The presentation included history, stories, and many fun, hands-on activities.

Students even danced to the traditional music of the Haudenosaunee, which they really enjoyed, according to Franklin Elementary teacher Heidi Sorel.

The Oxygen Network is now casting men and women for their new docu-series “Finding My Father.”

Asylum Entertainment, the company involved in casting the new series, is not casting just anyone who falls into this category; they’re looking for men and women who have overcome the statistics of growing up without a father.

“We want people that are inspirational, people who are really doing something,” said Joey Gemelli, casting director.

According to the National Center for Fathering, children who grow up in fatherless homes are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, drop out of school, and become involved in crime and violent behaviors. This show will promote those who have worked hard throughout their lifetime to break through those statistics.

“We’re looking for people who are doing something, people who have turned a negative into a positive,” said Gemelli, an alumnus of SUNY Buffalo State’s Television Department. “We want to give them final closure by getting to meet their father and ask the questions they have been wanting to ask him. Every story will be different.”

Hairdresser by day, rock star by night

The only thing on Rob Burgio’s mind growing up was music. As a child, he visited his father, a hairdresser, at work and helped him sweep the floors. Though hair was in his blood, he fell in love with music and exchanged his broom for a guitar when he was 12 years old.

He joined his school’s band and found himself playing in bands with his friends during his spare time. After graduating high school, Burgio knew he wanted to continue in music, but didn’t know what he wanted to do for a professional career.

He enrolled at Buffalo State, taking pre-requisite and music courses. Though he did well in his music courses and loved performing in the school’s jazz ensemble, he found himself struggling in his pre-requisites. It was during this time he found out his parents were getting divorced, and his father was moving to California.

“I decided to spend the summer with my dad in California when I was 19 years old,” Burgio said. Just like his childhood, he joined his dad at the hair salon every day. He enjoyed the experience and realized what career path he wanted to pursue.

As soon as Burgio returned to Buffalo, he enrolled in beauty school and, to his surprise, began his journey as a full-time hairdresser.

One day while working at a salon, he was discussing ideas to open a new salon with fellow hairdresser, Dana. On

Salon La Moda, the official salon of the Buffalo Bandettes.

Nov. 4, 1996, the pair opened Salon La Moda on Delaware Avenue in the Village Kenmore.

As their salon grew larger, so did their love for one another. Burgio proposed to Dana, who said yes, and the salon moved to a larger location. The two are happily married and recently moved Salon La Moda to its third location, a brand-new stateof-the-art facility at 2180 Niagara Falls Blvd. in the Town of Tonawanda.

Salon La Moda, the official salon of the Buffalo Bandettes, provides services such as hair cutting, waxing, customized hair coloring, hair extensions, eyelash extensions, pedicures and manicures. Burgio, Dana and their employees also continue taking classes so they can give each client the best service possible.

Moving to a new location allowed Dana to add a feature to the salon most salons don’t offer: customized wig fitting.

“It started with having patients who were going through chemo treatments,” Burgio said. “We’re one of the only salons featuring that.”

Though owning and working at a salon takes up a lot of time, Burgio finds a way to continue his music career.

“I played bass guitar with Seven Day Faith,” Burgio said. “We had a few hit songs and played with Avril Lavigne. Hearing our songs on the airwaves was an amazing moment for me.”

He has played in many bands since Seven Day Faith and currently plays with Leah Erin in the country/soul duo Beautiful Remedy.

“We just put out a CD on

iTunes. We’re going to Nashville this summer to perform there and we’re working on signing a promotional deal out of AStar Promotions,” Burgio said.

Though being a hairdresser and a musician are two different personas, Burgio couldn’t imagine his life without either.

“Sometimes you need a different outlet other than what you’re doing on a regular basis,” he said. “They’re both so amazing and so different from each other. I would be miserable if I didn’t have both of them.”

‘Thank-A-Vet’ outreach draws student veterans

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs recently held a “Thank-A-Vet” outreach event at D’Youville College in Buffalo to issue discount cards to honorably discharged veterans who file their original discharge papers with the clerk’s office.

A number of student veterans registered in between classes for the clerk’s “Thank-A-Vet” discount card that can be used at over 1,000 participating local businesses that have agreed to honor the card with a discount on purchases or services.

“My office continues our effort to recognize the service and sacrifices made

by Erie County veterans through this important program, including post-9/11 veterans who have recently returned from active duty,” Jacobs stated. “Certainly we want to do our part to honor all veterans and encourage them to record their discharge paperwork with the Erie County Clerk’s Office,” he added.

For the veteran, filing discharge papers is free of charge and certified compli-

mentary copies of recorded discharges are made for veterans or their immediate families whenever needed.

Original discharge papers are proof of military service and can be used to establish eligibility for a variety of benefits including property tax exemptions and civil service credits.

Recently, Military Times Edge magazine ranked D’Youville College fourth in the nation as one of the best four-year colleges and universities for veterans.

D’Youville was recognized because it offers numerous benefits for their 250 student veterans, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill. In many cases, veterans’ spouses and children are also eligible for certain services and benefits as well. Kenmore East students hear from Holocaust survivor

At a presentation at Kenmore East High School on Nov. 25, Holocaust survivor Joe Diamond brought to life something many students have only learned about from textbooks, providing a first-hand account of what it was like to endure the concentration camps of Nazi Germany.

In this way, students learned about one of the most important periods in history from the perspective of someone who had lived through it, could talk about what transpired in harrowing detail, and explain why it is such an important subject and how it relates to the world today.

Diamond grew up in the former Czechoslovakia, the older of two boys. In his hour-long presentation, he recounted the heart-breaking story of how, at age 14, he, his family, and all people of the Jewish faith in his village were transported to Auschwitz by the Nazis.

Diamond was separated from his mother and sevenyear-old brother and sent to the work camp, soon learning that his mother and brother had been killed in the gas chambers. He and his father spent several months

his way to another part of the camp, narrowly avoiding detection. Shortly thereafter, with the Russians closing in, the Nazis abandoned Auschwitz, evacuating all detainees and forcing them on a death march to another concentration camp rather than allowing them to be liberated by the Allies.

Diamond survived and was ultimately liberated by American soldiers in the final days of World War II. He eventually made his way to

America, making Buffalo his home.

More than 100 students and staff were present for Diamond’s presentation.

Diamond, who was invited to the school by social studies teacher Nicole Pauly, is one of only a handful of Holocaust survivors in Western New York who work in conjunction with the Buffalo Holocaust Resource Center to speak to thousands of children every year.

2014-15 Basketball Preview St. Joe’s to lean on team-wide effort without lone stud

Depth and balance are what the St. Joe’s Marauders basketball team will be hanging its hat on in 2014-15.

Losing five players to graduation and another who transferred at the start of the season made it look as if it would be a work in progress for the Marauders. But coach Mark Simon said his team has shown an incredible work ethic and chemistry early on. And though the team doesn’t have that one breakout stud, the depth across the board is better.

“Our plan is to play maybe 10 a night,” Simon said.

“Use that depth and athletic ability to put some pressure

on people. We’re going to try to be defensively aggressive and try to play as up-tempo as much as possible.”

Simon said the plan is also to obviously remain as disciplined as possible on the offensive side of the game as well.

In a year in which teams lose a lot to graduation, it usually means a specific core of two or three players are expected to step up and be the leaders.

But again, Simon feels the depth from top to bottom will help to alleviate the pressure of leadership being placed on the shoulders of just a few guys.

“I think the luxury of this team is not one guy has to really (lead),” he said. “Last year, we were a team of a couple guys. This is going to truly be a team, family effort where we don’t need one of them to step up because they’re all good enough to score points. They’re experienced now so it’s going to be a team effort.”

ter that family-first mindset are seniors Matthew Fritz, Edward Tabone Jr., Jack Scaglione, Antonio Morreale and Marcell Davis “It’s good. Everyone works hard. Everyone’s trying to earn their spot,” Fritz said. “I think we’ve got a really good, hardworking group here. It makes us work harder and makes us better as a team, I think, without that one star.”

Fritz and sophomore Naseer Jackson will play point guard, junior Nick Motley returns and Grant Beyer, who transferred in from Williamsville South, should also be a nice addition.

Having a balanced roster will keep every player working hard because they all no there isn’t that one star who can bail them out. And with so much depth, guys know if they slack off they will drop on the depth chart.

“Honestly, I think it brings us together more,” said Fritz.

“It brings us a team more, as a family.

“That’s just what we preach everyday in practice. It’s defense, defense, defense,” said McCarthy. “We know that we have a lot of learning to do on the offensive end...It’s a lot of reading of offenses, reading your cuts. It’s gonna take some time for them to understand that. The further we get along the better they’ll get offensively, but it starts with defense for us.”

Leading the way is point guard Katie Meegan. A threesport stud who also plays soccer and lacrosse, Meegan sees the floor well and is a reliable court general.

Also back are Julie Fleming, Meighan Murphy, Olivia MacDonald, Cheyenne Freely, Adrianna Durkin and Natalie Short.

Fleming, another outstanding all-around athlete, is money from the free throw

line while Freely is strong in the paint.

Murphy also has a reliable scoring touch as she led the Thunder with 12 points in its 54-33 win over Nichols on Dec. 3.

Sophomore Kelly Burns will also be a big piece of the puzzle going forward and sophomore Molly Meegan is getting some on-the-job training serving as back up point guard to her big sister, Katie.

“I think it’s in the DNA, a little bit,” said McCarthy.

“They know how to handle the ball.”

The Thunder fell to Kenmore West, 29-28, in its season opener on Dec. 2.

“I love this team because we are so together and we understand what we want to do,” said Meighan Murphy.

“We want to improve, not just us, but we want to improve the whole program. I love that we’re all dedicated and we’re moving forward and we’re coming after everyone this year.”

2014-15 Basketball Preview Blanch glad to be back as Ken East girls bench boss

After an absence of three seasons, Jack Blanch is back at the helm of the Kenmore East Lady Bulldogs basketball team.

“It’s just great to be back in the gym and have a few of the girls in class,”said Blanch “It’s exciting. It’s a process. They have to get used to me, I have to get used to them a little bit.

I tell them it’s a process.

You have the preseason, the season, then you get ready for the playoffs.”

Leading the way for the Bulldogs will be sophomore guard Kendall Mills.

Arguably the best ball handler and passer in the Niagara Frontier League, Mills will be utilized at both guard spots.

Junior guard Kiaja O’Neil, who came into her

own last year, returns and will no doubt be another key weapon on both sides of the floor.

Six-foot center/forward Sarah McCarthy, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last December, also returns. She not only brings the presence of a true post player, she is also the team’s lone senior.

“I think we’re doing great together from the beginning,” said McCarthy. “We came in and we felt very connected. A lot of us have been playing with each other for a long time now.”

McCarthy said she feels the team has transitioned well to the coaching change and the girls have faith in Blanch’s message.

“I think everyone has adjusted super well to it,” she said. “We know the expectations that he has for us and the goals that we all have as a team.”

to the varsity life as she saw quality minutes as an eighth grader.

Five-foot-10 sophomore forward Alyssa Ghosen and freshman Katia Weeks also return.

Weeks is a 5-foot sparkplug who brings speed and has a flash of daring on the defensive side that allows her to pick up steals.

With seven players in that eighth to 10th grade range, the Bulldogs will be one of the youngest teams in the NFL. “There’s a lot of upside because they are so young and they’re getting better everyday,” said Blanch.

“And that’s what we tell them to do. Just get a little better everyday and we’ll get better as a team.”

The Bulldogs opened with a 60-20 win over McKinley, then fell to Sweet Home in the title game of their tip-off tournament.

Bulldogs coach happy with early-season teamwork, chemistry

Who needs a star when you have team work?

As the Kenmore East boys basketball team makes its way into the new season, it finds itself in an interesting state.

On paper, no one guy jumps off the page as a true star,

but that is ok with coach Jay Robbins, who said this unit is closer and more supportive of each other than last year’s team.

“So far I’ve been really happy with the way they’ve worked in practice,” said Robbins. “They’re more team-oriented, probably because there is no one guy who can just take over. You have to work as a team to get

those looks and they pass.

I won’t say we’re a great passing team, but they pass the ball to each other pretty well. So there’s really no ball hogs from what I can see.”

The Bulldogs will have some size on the floor as senior Andy Fields and Mike DeBenedetti both go 6-foot4, 200 pounds. Seniors Tom Vancuran, Conor Hoar, Ben Koford and Justin Haeick will

be counted on to do more.

Robbins also feels that the size and athletic gifts of sophomore Ryan Williams will be a plus for his team, while Amane Daniels can also help on the offensive end.

Robbins said that early on, he has been especially impressed by what he has seen from Vancuran, Fields and Koford.

“They look pretty good,

those three,” he said. “Those three look pretty solid as far as being complete basketball players. They can dribble a little bit, got some good size. They can shoot, they can drive.”

Touching on the fact that the players on his team are somewhat woven together by their ties to other Ken East sports teams, Robbins thinks their connection and relation-

ships built on other teams will pay off in basketball.

“They all bring good stuff,” said Robbins. “I’ve got a couple from football, a couple from soccer and a couple from volleyball.”

Knowing that the NFL will once again be stacked with good teams, Robbins said their goal is to try and be above .500 and get back to Buff State.

2014-15 Basketball Preview Ken West confident returning core can answer questions

As the Kenmore West Blue Devils enter the new season, they have a few questions that need answering. Losing four starters will do that.

But with the most athletic group he has ever had, head coach Mike Meetze believes the answers will come.

The Blue Devils lost point guard Alex Price, scoring machine Noah Whalen, Adam Fron and Tyler Grandits, who all helped West capture the 2013-14 Niagara Frontier League championship.

But with core returnees like junior Terrell Ford and 6-foot-2 senior Trent White ready to play a bigger role, the Blue Devils have the foundation for another successful year.

“Terrell will do a little bit of everything,” said Meetze. “He’s gonna be our ‘engine that could,’ like last year. It’s his third year as a varsity player, third year as a starter. We’d like to leave him on the wing or as a two-(guard). He’ll also be a point guard when need be. Hopefully he does everything because he is my most versatile kid and probably the smartest basketball player.”

With an influx of new faces, this year’s training camp was even more vital when it came to sorting out everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and determining the best roles for each player.

“We have a lot of even kids,” said Meetze. “Nobody is really, really a superstar. Everybody is fast.

Everybody is athletic. Everybody brings something different.”

Mark Taylor will handle the point and Jayson Taylor should bring that gritty style that Grandits brought. Jahlel St. John, DeAngelo Walker, and David Blumberg bring speed and athletic ability.

“I think our potential is definitely Buff State,” said Ford. “We’re definitely that good. When everything comes together we should be a lot better. I think we could do better than last season because I think we have a better team. If we gel together we’ll be good.”

Jon Lorenzo, Robert Kirisits, Will Morrow, Tyler Aquilina, Tim Stoerr, Aaron Tucker and Steve Philips complete the lineup.

Lady Blue Devils leaning on size, experience under new coach

It’s a fresh message coming from a familiar face.

As the Kenmore West Lady Blue Devils march into the 2014-15 season, there is a bit of a changing of the guard as Jeff Martin has taken over as head coach after a 28-season stint working side-by-side with former head coach, Mike Licata.

“They’ve been working extremely hard,” said Jeff Martin. “Tryouts were

very difficult, but we feel we selected the 12 best players for the varsity.”

The Blue Devils return the best one-two punch in the paint in senior Katie Proy (6-foot-1), who will play center, and junior Sam Britton, who is 6 feet tall.

Britton’s fiery competitive edge and Proy’s more calming approach are the perfect blend of qualities teams need from their leaders.

Senior point guard Destiny Catania also returns and will be the key to feeding the ball into the

team’s two big girls.

“We’re all really excited that (Martin) is our coach,” said Destiny Catania. “He pushes us as hard as he can. He makes us better.

He helps us become like a family. He’s the one stressing it. I’m really excited for this year with him because he’s such a good coach.”

Toughness and an unrelenting, in-your-face, defensive attack will continue to be the hallmark of the Blue Devils’ game.

In the past, there were times one might debate

that the Blue Devils’ aggressive defense sometimes left them too winded to be effective on the offensive side of the game.

Martin’s solution? Simple.

“Get in better shape,” he said. “I think the reputation that Mike Licata started way back with pressure man-to-man defense is the staple of this program and we need to keep it. We need to keep that intensity up on the defense and we’ll create a lot of our offense from our defense.”

Britton has been a perfect example of that.

Working tirelessly in the off season with a personal trainer, Britton comes into the new year in the best shape of her life.

“She’s in unbelievable shape,” said Martin. “She has worked extremely hard on her skills and her conditioning with a private trainer at UB. ...She’s in much better shape and she is a much better player because of it.”

Knowing what they can count on from their core three of Proy, Britton, and Catania, the key to success will be the supporting cast.

Can sophomores like Jess Phillips, Grace Ferguson, Anna Quinlan, and Rachel Sefried continue to grow and improve?

“They have to up their game and they have,” said Martin. “They are very hungry. They have worked extremely hard in the offseason in the summer to up their games, to step up as a starter. As contributors.”

The Blue Devils proved their resiliency with a 2928 win over Mt. St. Mary, then scored a 52-51 comefrom-behind win over Williamsville East.

School board finds continued trend of enrollment decreases

At Tuesday’s KenmoreTonawanda Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Robin Zymroz gave a PowerPoint presentation to the board and members of the public on a projected decline in enrollment for upcoming years, underscoring a trend that led the district to decide to close three of its schools in the 2016-17 year.

Zymroz told the board the total enrollment in KenTon schools has gone down by 10.53 percent across all grade levels, from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Additionally, there is a 2.33 percent decrease from the 2013-14 year to the 201415 school year. Zymroz said this also paves the way into a future discussion on how the findings will impact staffing.

In 2016-17, Hamilton Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary and Kenmore Middle Schools will be closing, as per the district’s consolidation plan.

In January, a select group of fifth-grade students at Hamilton and Edison will be offered an option letter to attend sixth grade at Franklin Middle instead of going to Hoover, because after 201617 when district restructuring

used two projection studies: a conservative one more suitable for budgeting, and a moderate one that is more suitable for facilities planning. Zymroz said in order to have a more accurate idea of future enrollment, the district chose to use the moderate one to give itself some additional flexibility.

“The historical trends that we have seen in the past include our decreasing kindergarten enrollment, our continuing decreasing enrollment in kindergarten through grade 12 enrollment, the losses between the graduating cohort and the incoming kindergarten and first grade cohorts, and the slight losses that are affected from year to year,” added Zymroz. The birth rates have continued to decline in Erie County, and fell from a total of 10,667 per year in 2002 to 9,612 in 2013.

According to Zymroz, the declining enrollment is due to declining birth rate and families moving out of the district, but in some cases, it is also due to parents transferring their children to private schools. Zymroz said the district provides exit surveys for parents of children who leave the district’s schools, but the majority of the parents who receive them do not return them to the district. In the future, Zymroz said she hopes the district will follow up more on these surveys.

We want to be aware, so we have the opportunity to address it.” The families of students who will be affected by closings or redistricting will be given a few weeks to make their choice.

Board President Bob Dana said one of the main complaints he receives from parents is that they do not receive letters with important information until just before school starts. Zymroz said there will be a transitional committee assigned to help those students who will have to transition to another school in the near future, and this also includes parent information nights.

Town board approves auto service facility permit, bond increase

At its regular meeting on Monday, the Tonawanda Town Board voted to approve a special use permit to R&M Towing, Inc., to move its services from its current location in the northeastern part of the town to a new one that will open at 2845 Elmwood Ave., in the Village of Kenmore.

Supervising Code Enforcement Officer Carl Heimiller spoke before the board members to explain that the property in question on Elmwood had “historically been an auto service facility,” but since it had been abandoned for six months, it required a special use permit for similar use. The board approved a resolution to grant this permit with 11 specified conditions for use.

“The applicant, R&M Towing, currently operates a facility at Eggert Road and Somerville Avenue in the town, and I believe their intent is to move their operation fully over here.

The planning board has made a recommendation that it be approved, with conditions,” Heimiller said.

The town also approved a bond increase of $1.25 million, from a previous $4.55 million, for a project to build a town road at the North Youngmann Commerce Center. Town Engineer Jim Jones said the

town already authorized a bond of $3.3 million, but needed to increase it as construction in that area continues. First Source, a food and beverage distributor formerly Wythe Will Tzetzo, LLC, bought one parcel of land, while insulation contractor Unifrax also plans to build there.

“At the time, that amount of money covered a certain length of road to be built. In the past year and a half, things have developed out there where we have sold about 52 acres so far. We have to extend the road further to accommodate those new buyers, and we’re going to extend the road another 820 feet,” Jones said. “We have to include additional grating and storm water management and extension of the road, and certain provisions for green infrastructure.”

Also on Monday, members of the board recognized the collective effort town workers put into helping neighboring communities with the recent winter storm, which occurred since the last Town Board meeting on Nov. 17.

Councilman Joseph Emminger said although the Town of Tonawanda did not get much snow then, a resident praised the town’s response.

Emminger thanked Highway Superintendent William Swanson and Michael Kessler, director of water resources.

“I had a resident come up to me last week. He said

he was traveling in an area he shouldn’t have been in, but that’s neither here nor there. When he got into this area in West Seneca and he was driving down the street, he sees these yellow trucks coming at him,” Emminger said. “He said, and this is a quote: ‘I’ve never been so proud to be a Town of Tonawanda resident, than when I saw those trucks from our town helping out.’”

Emminger said although the storm did not actually hit the town itself, the storm ended up costing the town over $200,000 for the aid they gave to other communities. “That’s the impact it had on our budget - hopefully we’ll get reimbursed,” Emminger said, chuckling. “But we did it because it had to be done.

It’s not about whether or not we get reimbursed.”

Similarly, Town Supervisor Anthony Caruana, who said he used to work in the Depew and Lancaster areas, added that some of that area’s residents sent him a thank-you letter.

“We had some of our police officers working, protecting the ramps onto the 290 and the 190. We also had firefighters, some of whom are town employees, who went down on their own to volunteer.

We’re glad it didn’t hit here, but we’re very happy and fortunate that we were able to assist those in the other communities.”

About the Job The Community Papers of WNY has immediate openings within its Cheektowaga office for part-time Classified Advertising Service Representatives to handle inbound and outbound calls, input advertising copy and to provide outstanding service to our Community Papers of WNY classified advertisers.
