The world giraffe population is diminishing, with fewer than 80,000 in existence today. In WNY, we are fortunate to have the Buffalo Zoo, and their newest giraffe addition, baby Sampson. As a popular recreation spot for WNY families, the Zoo is able to bring attention to the larger issues of animal health, welfare, and conservation. And we need your help!

Currently, Sampson and his family have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the Zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade.

The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested

that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. The shade structure is one aspect of the Buffalo Zoo’s reaccreditation in 2016.

There will be plenty of opportunities to “spot” the Towne MINI Cooper throughout the year. Sampson’s MINI Cooper will also make appearances at the Buffalo Home & Garden Show, Erie County Fair, WNY Spring & Fall Health Expos, area shopping malls, and classic car shows. Inspired by the novel “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, students at Kenmore Middle School are determined to raise $5,000 by mid-February to build a water well in South Sudan, which is desperately in need of access to clean drinking water.

“Imagine a young child walking eight hours twice a day just to get water,” seventh graders Kaylee Karnyski, Stephanie Seyfang, Luke Bailey and Aaron Mendez wrote in a recent essay promoting the initiative.

“Nya, a fictional character from the novel ‘A Long Walk to Water,’ demonstrates the hardship of children walking great distances to get water. Nya is only an eleven-year-old and walks eight hours twice a day to get contaminated water for her family.”

Drawing inspiration from the book, Kenmore Middle School students are raising money for Water for South Sudan, an organization that drills water wells in the region. The organization was founded by Salva Dut, now a resident of Rochester who survived the Second Sudanese Civil War after being separated from his family at a young age. Dut is a character in “A Long Walk to Water.”

The ongoing fundraiser at the school includes loosechange donations, a movie day, a spirit week, and a canand-bottle drive. Students receive a drop of paper water g in:

with their name on it for donating. Donations are also being accepted at Kenmore Middle School basketball and wrestling events. The fundraiser will end Feb. 13 with a school-wide celebration assembly with the goal of raising $5,000, enough to construct one water well.

Students at Kenmore Middle School were not alone in drawing inspiration from the novel. After reading the book,, seventh-grade students at Franklin Middle School raised money for the Ugandan Water Project to bring filtration systems to villages in Uganda and walked around the school building carrying one-gallon water jugs to experience and demonstrate the plight of East African children who

must retrieve water daily for survival, like the character Nya. The Ugandan Water Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe access to clean drinking water and other resources to villages in Uganda. Students were even introduced to James Harrington, executive director of the Ugandan Water Project, during an interactive assembly and had the chance to ask questions about the project.

Samuel “Jerry” Starr, for whom the event is named, was its founder and a KenTon teacher for 34 years, having taught English, public speaking and drama classes at Kenmore West High School. Ash described his memories of Starr, and Starr’s impact on the community, as “wonderful.” “[He was] an A-plus, qualitDuring his lifetime, Starr had a “passion for helping out people in need,” Ash said. To this day, ETC has carried on Starr’s legacy, via the Ken-Ton tradition, since his death in 2011.

This weekend, teachers, students and parents of the Kenmore-Tonawanda School District will again be sleeping outside in winter for a cause. The 28th annual Jerry Starr Ken-Ton Schools’ Sleepout, named for a retired teacher who has since passed away, will take place 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, in the parking lot of the Hoover Middle School complex on Thorncliff Road.

The sleepout, which runs until 6 a.m. the following day, will involve all adult and older teen participants sleeping in refrigerator boxes to raise awareness of homelessness. Before and during the sleepout, monetary, food, clothing and personal care donations will benefit eight charitable organizations to help those who are less fortunate, and attendees have been generous.

Since the sleepout’s inception in 1988, Educators Totally Committed, a group

of current and retired KenTon teachers, have raised over $850,000. All of this has gone directly toward helping those who need assistance, particularly after the holiday season, when food banks and other organizations tend to see a sharp decline in the amount of donations they receive.

According to Stephen Ash, a retired teacher, event organizer and member of ETC, the cumulative figure includes only monetary donations and not material goods sleepout attendees and members of the community donate. The sleepout is always planned for the first Friday of February, and the turnout is generally strong, with many people donating but not necessarily sleeping out.

“I would say we had maybe 26 or 27 for last year,” Ash said, confirming the number included district parents, students of all ages, faculty members and staff.

“We welcome kids to come.

If they’re little kids, they can sleep right inside in the cafeteria.”

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has announced that two teachers from Franklin Middle School in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District were among only eight in Western New York to earn National Board Certification during the 2013-14 school year.

Kathleen Reiser, an eighth-grade ELA and academic intervention services teacher at Franklin Middle School, and Jeanette Yoder, a sixthgrade reading teacher at Franklin Middle School, successfully completed the year-long certification process, both on their first try, after initiating the process in September 2013. They each had

to design, implement and videotape lessons and submit detailed reflections on evidence that demonstrated their students’ learning. They also had to demonstrate their contributions to the community and teaching profession.

“It was a huge challenge, but I enjoyed working together with my students to improve my teaching,” Reiser said. “I also look forward to sharing what I have learned with other teachers, especially about meeting students’ learning needs.”

“The support of the Ken-Ton district and the Kenmore Teachers Association was critical to being able to achieve this milestone,” Yoder said. “I feel I am a stronger, more

reflective reading teacher.

The process renewed my commitment to impact student learning with positive and effective practices.”

In the spring, both teachers will be recognized and honored by the Kenmore Teachers Association for their achievement.

Forty-three percent of NBCTs have led efforts to implement the Common Core State Standards in their schools, districts and states, while the same percentage have been involved in leading the implementation of teacher evaluation systems through peer review or observation. More than three out of four NBCTs have led professional development efforts in their schools. In higher education, 234 NBCTs are serving as full-time faculty and 2,251 have served or are serving as adjunct faculty. On the state level, 116 are serving on a board of education.

The TMS production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” will take place 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, and 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at Tonawanda Alumni Auditorium. The classic 1957 film version of the “Cinderella” musical featured Julie Andrews in the title role and a range of numbers, including “Prince is Giving a Ball,” “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago” and “Stepsisters Lament.” The book and lyrics are by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Richard Rodgers, and the adaptation by Tom Briggs.

Tonawanda Middle art teacher and theater producer Daniel Lynch said on Monday this will be the first middle school production Tonawanda has had in six years.

“To continue building our growing program, we decided that adding a middle school show was the next step,” Lynch said.

“It will help students to become better prepared for the high school performances. We chose ‘Cinderella’ because it is a classic that families and our students love. We are very excited to bring this magical musical to the stage of Tonawanda.”

Lynch recalled how in the early days of the reboot of Tonawanda Middle’s theater program, the “excitement to have the opportunity to perform in a middle school musical was evident from day one.”

Lynch also recalled how students worked to memorize lines, songs, choreog-

raphy and staging under his lead, as well as that of Kelly Ersing, Vanessa Alaimo and student directors.

In addition to the middle school students, Tonawanda High School students will assist with “Cinderella” as well. High school students auditioned for the roles of student directors, and six students were chosen to serve as vocal directors, drama directors, choreographers and set designers. The younger actors will also get help from some veterans of Tonawanda’s theater program.

“High school students also could participate in stage crew,” Lynch commented. “Students that worked on crew for [the fall production of] ‘The Addams Family’ have been paired up with a middle school student. They have been working hard to teach them all they can about stage crew, and direct them in their first performance.

Tonawanda community’s response to “Cinderella” thus far, Lynch said parents and others are happy about the return of Tonawanda Middle’s musicals, calling it a “wonderful opportunity for the students of Tonawanda and a great way to continue growing our theater program.” He also said some parents have worked behind the scenes as well.

“I expect that Cinderella will be a great success.

The students and directors have worked very hard, and are very ready for their performance,” Lynch said Monday. “It is our hopes that by continuing with

a middle school musical each year, we will be able to produce more challenging, and more professional, high school musicals in the years to come.”

Lauren Seifert recently joined the faculty at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore as the Spanish teacher. Seifert comes from St. Francis of Assisi School in North Tonawanda where she previously taught for two years.

A graduate of Niagara University, she studied Spanish as an undergraduate and received her Master’s in English as a Second Language (ESL).

Seifert was excited to hear the position at St. John the Baptist School had opened after the previous teacher’s family accepted an unexpected out-of-town transfer.

Last Wednesday, Jan. 28, residents of the Town and City of Tonawanda, Kenmore, Buffalo and many neighboring communities heard the latest updates from the Clean Air Coalition on efforts to keep abreast of air pollution. The CAC, best known for leading a campaign against Tonawanda Coke several years ago, held a public forum at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church in the town.

CAC Director Erin Heaney, who introduced representatives of the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute at the Rochester In-

stitute of Technology, or P2I, said the goal of the meeting was to discuss P2I’s local work. Heaney said an Environmental Protection Agency grant will allow P2I to complete research and pollution prevention projects in the Town of Tonawanda. Heaney said after the CAC got its start by campaigning against Tonawanda Coke, activists wanted to continue working on projects.

Beth Meer of the Department of Environmental Conservation, a guest presenter at the meeting, said the local initiative is known as the “E3 initiative,” which stands for “economy, energy and the environment.” The E3 initiative is also in other areas, but the goal in Tonawanda was to

“improve the overall air and environmental quality of the town.” When the DEC came to Tonawanda in 2008, they found five chemicals - benzene, formaldehyde, 1,3-butadene, acetaldehyde and acrolein - in elevated quantities.

Patricia Donahue, Senior Pollution Prevention Engineer of P2I, said the company tried to “support the Tonawanda community in working with the manufacturing facilities that are here, so we can make a difference for all of you who are living in this general area.” P2I is based in Rochester, but also works with the State University of New York at Buffalo and Clarkson University in Potsdam.

“We thought this project

would really only take two years. We’ve actually asked for two extensions from the EPA to carry on this work, because we did have a struggle with trying to connect with manufacturers in the Tonawanda area,” Donahue said. “We’re working into our fourth year. We received $135,000 to support four projects with manufacturers.”

In 2011, the project was the first time the DEC and EPA have ever targeted pollution prevention assistance to a specific geographic area and specific companies, Meer said, and they screened 59 companies in Tonawanda.

They measured the air emissions each of the companies emitted while considering the companies’ overall con-

tributions to Tonawanda’s economy. The goal is also to help some of the smaller and medium-sized companies that may not have the necessary resources.

Anahita Williamson, director of the P2I, said when working with companies, P2I’s goal is not to get rid of waste once it has already been produced, but rather to work to reduce the waste that companies create in the first place. They have worked with over 200 companies in the state, and they provided direct assistance to the ones with whom they worked in Tonawanda.

“Our entire mission is to try and reduce environmental footprint and reduce costs, and it’s difficult because com-

panies these days are working within a very short payback period,” Williamson added.

“We have a vested interest to try to get these companies to move to implementation, and we try to do that by offering solutions that meet the economic payback periods.”

Once the assessments have been completed, P2I advises companies to follow through with the implementation, although they cannot force the companies to move forward with the recommended solutions, Donahue said. When the companies do make the changes, the P2I monitors them for three years to make sure that they are continuing on.

He has done one and is working towards the other.

As Argentieri, and his Kenmore West Blue Devil teammates, head into the Class Tournament Feb. 7 Lancaster High School, he will be riding a wave of momentum after capturing the 120-pound championship of the 29th Annual Ken-Ton Invitational Tournament.

Argentieri went a spotless 4-0 as he defeated Dominic Caruso of St. Joe’s to win the championship and be awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler.

When he first stepped onto the wrestling mat as a seventh grader, Richie Jones was just wondering if he would ever get his first varsity win.

Win No. 200 was the farthest thing from his mind.

Jones, a St.Joe’s senior, captured the 182-pound

“It made me feel real good because what I said in the beginning is, ‘I’m going to go out there and pin and tech everyone,’” said Argentieri.

“Just so I can prove to everyone that doubted me for going up to 120 that they were wrong.”

Now standing at 150 career wins, Argentieri is not only driven to return to the NYSPHSAA tournament; he is also defying the critics who told him that he should have stayed at 113 pounds instead of trying to bump up.

“He’s really stepped up his game in practice. He’s wrestling hard. We’ve got some very capable guys and he wrestles everybody. It doesn’t matter,” said KenWest coach Bill Hineman.

“A lot of days he does two practices. He comes to ours then he goes somewhere else to work out. He’s driven to prove us all wrong. Everybody is telling him he should

stay down at 115. He’s confident at 120 and he showed it at Ken-Ton with the guys he pinned there. He’s ready to go.”

Doing more Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling over the summer, Argentieri feels he has expanded his arsenal of moves.

“A lot of that foot work has helped me with some of the heavier guys this year,” Argentieri said. “Greco, upper body stuff, I was never good at tying up. This year, I’m tying up all over the place.

I’m throwing kids, getting double unders. Greco and freestyle have just helped me so much.”

Senior Paul Bavisotto went 3-1 at Ken-Ton, falling to Tonawanda’s Cody McGregor in the championship match of the 132 pound bracket.

“Mentally, I’ve been kicking it up a notch,” Bavisotto said. “I know it’s time to get

serious. Time to start training harder.”

Pushing himself harder at the gym than ever before, Bavisotto is ready to give his all in the final leg of his scholastic career. He also feels that the Ken-Ton Tournament served as a perfect primer for the postseason for every Blue Devil.

“Nothing else matters except from what happens after this,” said Bavisotto.

“And I think the Ken-Ton Tournament was a great tournament to end our regular season with.”

Hineman also feels that Mitch Currey (195), who placed fourth at Ken-Ton, Jakob Coad, who placed sixth at 145, Christian Bauman (120), Johnny Milks (145), Torey Turner (99) and Jason Vollmer are all geared up and ready for strong showings at Class. Bauman came within a whisker of beating Caruso in the semifinals at 120.

En route to the title, Jones picked up No. 200 in a career that began while he was a middle school student wrestling for Kenmore East. “ Ye a h , ” J o n e s s a i d .

“Nineteen and 18 as a seventh grader, it’s crazy.”

Jones, as of press time, has an overall record of 202 wins and 63 losses, going 52-33 during his career as a Bulldog.

The other 152 firmly established him as the Marauders’ all-time wins leader. Surpassing Travis

Berube’s mark of 134.

Not sure what to say about reaching the milestone of 200 victories, Jones modestly shrugged off any praise and simply said that his goal is to repeat as a Catholic state champion then go on to the Federation tournament and hopefully make his mark as a state champion there, too.

“I’ve never really worried about records or anything,” Jones said. “I’m focused on trying to be the best that I can be, working as hard as I can, go back to states and hopefully do better than I did last year (at Federation).”

Never being distracted by his win total is part of the reason why Jones has been able to stay focused and put up such lofty numbers.

When the time is right, after his career is over, Jones will allow himself the time to reflect on what he was able to do on the mat.

St. Joe’s coach Peter Kennedy said Jones’ success is a testament to his focus, hard work and dedication.

“For him, that’s probably going to be something that he’s going to look back on when he’s done wrestling,” Kennedy said. “He didn’t want to make a big deal out of it today, but it’s nice.

He’s been so amazingly consistent and injury-free for six years.”

Kennedy added that what makes Jones’ success rate even more impressive is that, unlike most seventh or eighth graders who slowly get acclimated to the varsity lifestyle by starting in the 99-pound class, Jones was thrown into the fire right away. He never wrestled at 99 and by eighth grade he was at 130 pounds.

As a whole, the Marauders did well at Ken-Ton as they scored 92.5 team points for an eighth-place finish out of the 18 teams that competed.

Dominic Caruso finished in second place at 120 pounds to eventual Most Outstanding Wrestler Anthony Argentieri of Kenmore West.

Derek Penman (second) and Garrett Baugher (third) also placed for St.Joe’s.

“This morning we talked about how today is like a dress rehearsal for the postseason,” Kennedy said.

“Make sure that we’re refining the things that we’re doing well. See if there’s any weaknesses that we need to correct over the next week and a half. Get out of here healthy and get ready for St. Francis on (Feb. 3).”

Ken West boys, girls best rival East in Battle of Ken-Ton part 2

By Dave Ricci Destiny Catania had 11 points and Terrell Ford poured in 24 as Kenmore West swept the second round of the Battle of Ken-Ton basketball double header that was played Feb. 3 at Kenmore West.

The Lady Blue Devils (9-1 NFL), after suffering a 53-52 loss to the Bulldogs last month, gained a measure of revenge with a 48-41 win that also avenges their only NFL loss of the season.

“It honestly feels so good.

It’s an amazing feeling,” Catania said. “It’s the best feeling, beating your rival.”

Catania’s layup marked Ken West’s first points of the night as the team raced to a 9-4 lead. But the Lady Bulldogs (6-4 NFL) answered the bell with an 8-0 run that was highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Emma Knab and Sarah McCarthy (11 points), with McCarthy’s coming at

the buzzer.

Ken East, looking for a repeat win over its rival, held the lead for almost the entire second quarter until Catania hit a pair of free throws, then another layup that put West up 23-21 with four seconds left in the half.

“I’m very happy for Destiny,” said coach Jeff Martin.

“She has upped her game tremendously the past five or six games. She has just been a true leader. She has had some great assists, some big buckets and plays great defense for us.”

The game proved to be one highlighted by physical play that saw both teams’ staters flirting with foul trouble. As they did in a recent win over Niagara-Wheatfield, the depth of the Blue Devils’bench made the difference asAnna Quinlan (six points) and Tiesha Rivera brought quality minutes off the bench.

“That was the difference in the game,” said Martin. “When we subbed it up, our bench played fantastic.”

“I think we’re stronger when he comes off the bench because he gives that instant energy,” said West coach Mike Meetze. “He’s a physical kid. He can play inside and out. Even though he’s playing forward, he can do guard skills. Tonight, when we needed some energy, he came into the game and really brought it.”

Taylor also had a couple deflections and won some loose ball battles that led to points by other teammates.

Buffalo Turners take second place The Buffalo Turners’ combined team of Level 7, 8 and 9 gymnasts took second place in the team competition at the seventh annual Jacquie Hirsch Memorial Buffalo Challenge Jan. 24-25 at the Greater Buffalo Gymnastics Center.

“It feels good,” Taylor said of the win. “We’ve been working hard all week in practice...We just came out and played hard.”

Mike DeBenadetti had eight points and showed flashes of the team ball East needs to play when he unselfishly dished the ball to Justin Haeick, whose better look at the basket made it 37-23 midway through the third.

Andy Fields had four 3-pointers among his teambest 20 points as the Bulldogs worked hard, but could not pull any closer than within 10 points.

“We got too far behind,” said East coach Jay Robbins.

“We’re not a high-scoring team. That’s probably the best second half we had all year.

We just get too far behind and you can’t catch up...

They had more jump in the beginning and we were more scrambled.”

East also lost Ryan Williams after he took a hard fall in the opening minute and did not return.
