BLACK CULTURE MARKET, BRIXTON
 Black Culture Market is holding a Christmas special  Customers at Kiln Rooms

From Caribbean Shores to Catford: This Windrush inspired Panto is a “Purr-fect" spin on a classic tale

Joy Productions and Broadway Theatre, the award-winning Panto partnership behind last year’s Sleeping Beauty, winner of the prestigious OFF-WEST END AWARDS’ Best Production, return to present Dick Whittington and his Catford Cat, their newest festive family show coming to Lewisham’s glorious Art Deco Theatre.

This classic folk tale of London’s most famous mayor has been transformed into an elaborate musical extravaganza inspired by the Windrush Generation and marking 77 years since the HMT Empire Windrush arrived with its very first passengers. Packed full of joyful characters, slapstick humour, popular showtunes and dazzling dance routines from Lindy hop to hip hop, this year’s spectacular

production will open in the heart of South London from 9 – 31 December.

Written by legendary Panto playwright Susie Mckenna (Best Director at the British Pantomime Awards 2020), the show is a tribute to her wife actor Sharon D Clarke’s parents Viola & Vincent Clarke. McKenna has revamped the storyline, adding a local twist which transports Dick and his faithful cat from Jamaica to seek his fortune on the streets of Catford.

She says: “This panto is a love letter to the Windrush Generation and to everyone who has contributed to create this vibrant and multi-cultural country we live in today. I hope audiences in Lewisham and beyond will experience laughter and connection, all the while spreading

the message of joy and unity at this important time of the year.”

This year’s show includes a host of returning Lewisham-based West-End actors as well as Justin

Brett , a long-standing member of the Olivier award-winning Showstopper! - The Improvised Musical , who is cast as the larger-than-life Panto Dame in the shape of Sarah The Cook, serving up plenty of sass and flamboyance.

The Free Association, one of the UK’s leading improvised comedy schools, has opened its doors to its first permanent home in the Old Union Arches, after years of searching for a suitable venue.

The Free Association (FA) has secured a 10-year lease on their purposebuilt venue, home to a 104-seat theatre, a classroom, and a cafe and bar, which will also open to the public.

The FA are a leading improv acting school, founded by actor Graham Dickson and comedy duo Ivan Gonzalez and Max Olesker in 2014.

It has a 104-seat theatre, a classroom, a cafe and bar, which is open to the public

What began as a single improv comedy night above the De Beauvoir Arms in Dalston, snowballed into a powerhouse on the UK improv scene.

In just over a decade, the FA has taught thousands of students, including high profile alumni, such as Ambika Mod who starred in One Day, standup comedian Phil Wang and Tanya Reynolds from Sex Education.

Located just three minutes from Southwark tube station, the construction of the new venue was made possible through the support of the FA community, who helped raise £18,000 in a crowdfunding initiative.

The versatile theatre space will be used to host a variety of comedy and

Improvisers open new home

performing arts shows, whilst the classroom will be used to teach the FA’s renowned improv school, which welcomes anyone from experienced performers to complete beginners.

Graham Dickson, who founded the Free Association, delivered a moving monologue and spoke candidly about how the team have faced numerous barriers and “11 years of heartbreak” in

their search for a venue.

He said: “From rooms above pubs, to a second room above a pub, we must have had about 20 venues almost happen in the eleven years since I started the Free Association. That’s what makes this feel so special.”

It was opening night on Thursday 17 October, with two action-packed improv comedy shows taking to the stage.

The atmosphere inside the venue was euphoric, with FA students, alumni and improv-lovers all in attendance.

Two teams of six improvisers dove head first into a completely made up scenario to an audience of just over 100 people for half an hour.

The motif was supplied by an audience member, in the first group this was “a nice thing that has happened

to someone recently”. One audiencemember had just moved into her first place on her own, and the group spring boarded off each other in a display of comic brilliance.

The second group opted for a word from the audience, and someone shouted “robust”, prompting another half an hour of hilarious and chaotic storylines.

Jonny Collis-Scurll who co-owns The Free Association, added: “Our community of performers and students have long deserved a venue of this calibre, and I can’t wait to showcase them in our new home!”

Comedian and actress Liz Kingsman said: “It has been a privilege to be a part of The Free Association since they opened their doors over ten years ago.

“It is incredibly exciting to finally have a destination for the ever-growing improv community, and to safeguard the general public from the dangers of having improvisers on the streets.”

They offer a £20 taster class for 90 minutes of improv classes.

For an 8-week course, it’s £325 for three hours of improv per week. You can see the next course dates here: https:// www.thefreeassociation.co.uk/improvtraining-intro-to-long-form#alldates

Scent with love

Meet the duo behind Brixton Village's cult perfumery

My Signature Aroma

Nestled amongst Brixton Village's incense-filled alleyways lies My Signature Aroma, a bespoke perfumery inspired by individuality.

My Signature Aroma was created by Dionne Palmer and Frank Kennedy online in 2020, before the pair opened their first bricks-and-mortar site in October 2023, giving the brand a home in Brixton's cultural melting pot.

In between serving eager customers, Frank, 43, discussed the unique personalisation the company brings to perfume-making: “Our concept with the brand is ‘your ingredients, your blend, your creation’. You can figure out your own perfume blend and the percentages of each ingredient note that you will be using, so it’s something that you can call your own. We just wanted to bring a bit of luxury to the people of Brixton.”

The number of passersby who waved at Dionne, 38, as we spoke made it clear that the duo have built up a loyal clientele within the community, a factor which has helped them to expand My Signature Aroma’s range of products.

After taking perfumery classes online during the Covid-19 lockdowns, the duo started out by just making sprays, but have since progressed to body butters, beard oils, candles and diffusers too.

Their red pre-made scent bottles lined the shelves above us like Christmas nutcrackers as Dionne reminisced about falling in love with fragrance as a young girl in Brixton Hill.

“My mum would love Thursday night shopping at Selfridges in the West End, and at the time you could go to almost every perfume stand and get loads of samples, and I just loved it,” she says.

“I would go into my mum's perfume boxes and I would spray, spray, spray away. So I guess there's always been that passion, it's almost innate.”

Frank, who grew up in Clapham, similarly enthused about the important role scent plays in his life, saying: “Your scent is your aura; it represents you. When you walk into a room without saying anything, people are either going to gravitate to you or refrain from you based on your scent.”

Indeed, perfume drew the duo together, as Frank first met Dionne at a party where he asked her what scent she was wearing.

The co-founders have come a long way since then, having recently produced pop-up experiences

for brands like Barclays, Netflix and the Mayor of London that transformed office spaces into vibrant perfume labs for team-building events.

Handing me a ten millilitre vial, Frank encouraged me to take part in the experience too, visibly brimming with excitement to instruct a newcomer in the wonders of perfumery.

Piping a drop of their ‘Deep Night’ concentrate into the small bottle with diluting liquid, I inhaled notes of oud, sweet rose and musk.

The scent was actually developed by mistake when Frank tried to make another perfume and poured the wrong vial into the mixture – creating their accidental bestseller.

As I spritzed I could see why it was so popular. Frank noted my enjoyment, saying: “It’s put a smile on your face, that's good.”

Despite their lifelong love of perfume, the pair only recently left their salaried jobs to go full-time in the fragrance world.

Frank and Dionne previously worked in music management and rum-punch sales, and left their roles in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

Their passion for making accessible, high-quality perfume has now become their central focus, as they hope to bring ‘affordable luxury’ to people who aren't able to indulge in expensive fragrances.

“We never had the chance to buy these products,

“We just wanted to bring a bit of luxury to the people of Brixton”

so it left us no choice but to go into a rabbit hole online, trying to figure out how these perfumes are made and where they're sourced,” Frank explained.

“It was just me creating things that I couldn't afford for myself but then it led to sharing that freedom with others. To giving people the power to create their own.”

Dionne ended our conversation by emphasising how everyone deserved the confidence a well-made perfume like theirs provides, adding: “Everyone should walk away with pride when they have a My Signature Aroma product.”

Wakuda in Lewisham ―

The Christmas market showcasing black-owned brands

Wakuda Market is a free-to-enter Christmas market in Lewisham Shopping Centre, showcasing African and Caribbean brands offering food, gifts and crafts.

Back in 2020, Lewisham locals Nathaniel and Albert, had grown frustrated at the lack of authentic African and Caribbean products in mainstream retail.

Albert struggled to find a father's day card featuring a Black father and Nathaniel couldn't find a doll that looked like his daughter.

They both were aware of numerous Black-owned brands offering these types of products, but accessing them wasn't always easy.

From here, the idea behind Wakuda formed: a market bringing exclusively Africana and Caribbean artisans straight to the public, all in a place with high foot-fall. They are back in Lewisham Shopping Centre every weekend from Saturday 29 November to Sunday 22 December. They will also be staying two additional days on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 December.

Nathaniel and Albert launched Wakuda as a brand in the wake of the Black Lives Matter Movement in 2020, when many people wanted to support Black businesses.

From art, fashion and jewellery, to skincare, haircare and even food, Wakunda's selection of stalls makes for a Christmas shopping paradise. You can chat directly to the makers.

Nathaniel said: “Wakuda is about celebrating culture, supporting Black artisans, and making it easy for people to discover products that reflect culture and heritage."

Supporting small businesses has always been at the heart of the market, with independent sellers coming together to share their passion and produce. They have since grown to support over 500 businesses.

The feedback from vendors is overwhelmingly positive. Nathaniel said: “Our markets give small businesses visibility, footfall, and direct feedback from customers. We’ve seen businesses grow their audience, generate consistent sales, and gain confidence in expanding their brands.”

Albert looks back fondly on the vibe of the market during the Christmas season last year. He said: "It became a vibrant market, full of stories and products you won’t find anywhere else."

Outside of the Christmas season, Wakunda runs popup markets throughout the year across South London. They also have a website, where they list the items, describing them as "products you won't find on the high street."

Aside from the products, the pair say Wakuda is also about connection, not just commerce. They bring human interaction back to the shopping experience, with a range of personalised gift offerings on their website and

information about each seller.

A lot of the brands on offer may not have an online presence for their brand, so Wakuda not only gives them exposure, but also takes marketing time off the hands of the busy sellers.

Nathaniel and Albert were born and raised in Lewisham, so saw it as the perfect place to host the Christmas markets.

Nathaniel said: "It's such a diverse, creative community

that reflects the people and businesses we’re supporting. It felt like the perfect home for Wakuda.”

Albert had a career as a digital marketer and he helped major e-commerce brands like Amazon and Deliveroo acquire new customers, so he is positioned well to maximise Wakuda's business strategy.

Nathaniel's background is in engineering and marketplaces, giving him the practical skills to open Wakuda. However, he also has a passion for learning

and positive impact, which became the inspiration to co-found Wakuda.

"This year, I’m looking forward to seeing more talented artisans thrive and our community grow stronger," Nathaniel told us. "It’s exciting to watch everything come together.

"We want everyone who visits to leave inspired and excited to support these amazing businesses.”

Looking ahead, the pair want to branch out their pop-up offering to more locations across South London, promoting access to and awareness of their partner brands.

They also plan to expand the product categories on their website, introducing more experiences and opportunities to connect artisans and customers.

Unicorn dreams for honey-based brewer Gosnells

Rye Lane’s abuzz as Gosnells takes over John the Unicorn, promising ‘by Peckham, for Peckham’ ethos

Honey-based drinks brewers Gosnells have taken over Peckham’s John the Unicorn pub, bringing the beloved boozer under local ownership.

The vibrant two-floor pub in Rye Lane, which relaunches on November 20, is housed in what was once a decorator’s shop and has become a favourite for its laid-back vibes, neon cocktails, craft beers and stone-baked pizzas.

The new owners plan to extend the opening hours, operating as a café and lunch venue during the day with coffee, pastries and locally sourced lunches, alongside fast WiFi to attract those working from home.

Evenings will see an ‘exciting’ programme of events and activities including live music, with pizza on the menu alongside a range of cocktails, wine, beer, and Gosnells own Honey Nectars.

Tom Gosnell, who founded the brand in 2014, said: “We strongly believe in ‘by Peckham, for Peckham’ so there’s an extra layer of pride that we’re taking over such a storied space in our own backyard. And that we get to share it with the community who’s supported us from

the start.

“We want to lean into what makes John the Unicorn iconic and that feeling that you’ve stumbled into somewhere rare and prized.”

Gosnells has brewed honey nectars, ABV drinks inspired by the craft beer and mead scenes, in Peckham since 2014 and has a growing presence in South London, with canned and on draught drinks served in many local venues. John the Unicorn becomes the company’s second flagship site, joining their Bermondsey Bar – with Gosnells teasing more news to come in 2026.

The pub has been acquired from the Portobello Pub Company, where managing director Richard Stringer said: “We have loved our time with John the Unicorn, but it is exciting to see it gain a new lease of life with a truly locally rooted business.”

Under Gosnells’ ownership, existing JTU staff will be retained, and the venue’s name will not be changed.

‘A place of connection and healing’
How grief, love and lockdown spurred Stephanie’sfounder to create her Belair Park sanctuary

There used to be an old, derelict car park opposite West Dulwich Station. An unloved, unused patch of land, it was often covered in whatever junk fly tippers had left behind.

But in 2021, right in the middle of the pandemic, this neglected corner next to Belair Park underwent a remarkable transformation. It turned into something beautiful – and it was all the work of now 45-year-old Stephanie Morgan.

Stephanie’s, her much-loved cafe, started off as a tiny horsebox serving takeaway coffee during lockdown, and has since grown into a ‘little sanctuary’ with a loyal following; serving food and drink, hosting events and groups, and becoming a cornerstone of the West Dulwich community.

Becoming a cafe owner wasn’t, Stephanie tells us, part of any ‘grand plan’. A former singer once signed under Simon Cowell, Stephanie already had her own business – she launched Raw & Juicy, the UK’s first homedelivery juice cleanse brand, back in 2006 – but it was losing her father during those strange and lonely times that propelled her to create something new. And it was never about making profit, she says.

“My dad had been diagnosed with cancer, and as his illness progressed, lockdowns meant I couldn’t be with him,” Stephanie explains.

“Watching him go through treatment over

FaceTime, not knowing if I’d ever see him again, was unbearable.

“Clearing that overgrown patch of land became my lifeline. Each day, I’d go out with a shovel and secateurs, digging and building — not with a business plan, but with grief, love, and the need to create something living from something broken.

“It was a way to keep going, to process everything I couldn’t control.”

Over the years Stephanie has sunk a huge amount of her own savings into the passion project, but this year revealed she was facing possible bankruptcy after racking

up huge bills after being repeatedly targeted by thieves and vandals.

As her cafe is classed as a ‘non permanent structure’ none of the repairs, extra security measures or stock replacement – at one point thieves stole 50 ice creams – are covered by insurance, leaving Stephanie paying out of her own pocket. After 21 break-ins this year alone the situation has become unsustainable. But she is determined not to give up.

“My father passed away two years ago, and that loss still sits deeply with me,” she tells us.

“The café, though, carries so much of him in it — his

resilience, his humour, his quiet strength. Every fence post, every flower bed feels like a continuation of that love.”

Reluctantly she launched a Crowdfunder aiming to raise enough money to pay for new fences, a taller gate, and a more secure seating area. So far, £3,000 has been pledged.

“The community’s support has been incredible,” she told us. “I’m determined to keep it safe and welcoming for everyone who finds comfort here.”

The Curling Club is making a seasonal return to Vinegar Yard this winter, in their purpose-built arena located directly opposite London Bridge station.

Following last season’s success, the Curling Club is back for a second year and ready to bring an après-ski vibe to London Bridge, where you can try your hand at the unusual sport with friends or colleagues.

Vinegar Yard will be transformed, with curling lanes, festive decorations and food and drink vendors.

Curling is played on a long ice rink, where two teams slide a large granite stone down the ice towards a target, known as a ‘house’. Once all eight stones have been pushed, points are scored based on where the stones are left in relation to the target.

Don’t worry if you have never ‘curled’ before, the ice-free curling at Vinegar Yard is ideal for beginners. Members of the Curling Club team will also be on hand to provide tips and advice.

The event is suitable for all group sizes, from intimate gatherings of between 2-4 people to large corporate events. Each group is split into Red and Blue teams, with up to 10 players per rink.

Cherrie Keene, Managing Director at The Curling Club, said: “It’s fast, fun, and easy to get competitive –perfect for groups looking to challenge their friends, colleagues, or even make new friends, or connections on the ice.”

For smaller groups of 2-4, they offer ‘Pay and Play’, which includes 30 minutes of curling time on a private sheet and priced at £15 per person.

Their bespoke packages start from six people but they can accommodate much bigger parties, depending on needs. Prices for corporate packages start at £47.95 per person.

Curl up and try

Curling Club at Vinegar Yard

Their ‘House’ package provides a private area for four hours, a drink on arrival, a small plate from their street food traders, an hour of curling and a group photo to remember the day.

For those who are looking to tighten their curling skills, the ‘Curls of Wisdom’ package adds two additional drinks, a larger meal, an hour of curling with a coach, a tabletop curling game to keep and your own host, who will keep an eye on the action and score. For refreshments in the rink, there will be plenty of

seasonal cocktails on offer.

If you’re feeling peckish, a selection of fresh street food from local vendors will be available, with refreshments delivered straight to your curling rink.

These include indulgent burgers and sides from Nanny Bill’s, tacos from Taco Bills and fluffy bao buns from Nik’s Kitchen. There will also be fresh Japanese bites from Japanese Kitchen Shop, and slices from Bad Boy Pizza.

To bring the party atmosphere, there will be live

entertainment whilst groups are playing. On peak dates, like the weekend or celebrations, there’s a live DJ who spins downstairs and sets are streamed into the mezzanine upstairs.

Once the session wraps up, guests are welcome to stay in the arena, grab a drink and soak up the atmosphere, with social spaces designed for guests to linger and catch up.

This next season will run from 5 November until 28 February and will have three mini ‘seasons’ within that time frame.

Exploring, Creating, Discovering The Reggio Approach in Action

Step into a Reggio-inspired nursery and you’ll notice something different: children aren’t simply following instructions - they’re leading the way. The Reggio Emilia philosophy is built on a simple yet powerful idea: children are natural thinkers, full of curiosity and creativity, and capable of steering their own learning.

At 1st Place Educators act as co-creators and guides, a child’s question “Why do leaves change colour?” might spark a group investigation, leading to experiments, art projects, outings and stories that weave STEM and creativity together. Learning becomes a journey shaped by the child’s interests.

At 1st Place Nurseries, this approach is visible everywhere, from Forest School explorations to collaborative art projects in the Studio. The Atelierista, a specialist in creative learning, works alongside educators to enrich these experiences, ensuring that art and imagination flow naturally through daily life. This partnership helps children express ideas in multiple ways through painting, building, storytelling, and more. Documentation plays a key role. Educators capture moments of discovery through photos, notes, and children’s own words. These records don’t just show what was made— they reveal how thinking evolves,

giving families a window into their child’s learning process.

The Reggio approach values collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking—skills that last a lifetime. It’s not about rushing to the “right answer,” but about nurturing curiosity and confidence. When children

see their ideas explored and extended, they learn that learning is an active, meaningful process. Every day in our nurseries, you’ll find evidence of this philosophy in action: conversations that spark investigations, shared projects that grow from a single question, and

environments designed to inspire wonder. It’s a way of learning that invites children, educators, and families to journey together, where curiosity lights the path.

Oak Tree Day Nursery is dedicated to giving children the very best start!

At Oak Tree Day Nursery, we provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where every child is supported to reach their full potential. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and are equipped with state of the art ICT resources, including touchscreens and educational software designed to enhance children’s learning.

We offer a range of enriching extracurricular activities, such as French, Music and Movement, Yoga and Fun Sports. We also offer free settling-in sessions. Flexible 15-hour and 30-hour funded places are available for eligible children.

Our nursery features a dedicated sensory room and a spacious garden that encourages explora-

tion, imaginative play and hands on learning. Children also enjoy access to a natural outdoor area complete with a mud kitchen and vegetable planters. Outings to the local library, markets, parks, farms and the theatre further expand their learning experiences and connection to the community.

Mealtimes at Oak Tree Day Nursery are an important part of our healthy living ethos. Children enjoy delicious, balanced and nutritious meals, and we are proud to have consistently received a 5-star rating from Lambeth Council’s Food Standards and Health & Safety inspectors.

Ofsted recognises the warm, supportive environment we provide:

“Children feel secure in this homely nursery. Specialist teachers in French and Music visit the children regularly to teach language and music; this enriches the children’s learning.”
