The Essential Guide to Education 2025-26

4 Get into the right secondary school

Essential information for those starting secondary school next year

Open days are due to take place, but make sure you know what is what

Each year the challenge of deciding on which secondary school to apply to for your child remains one of the biggest education decisions for parents and carers...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

It is vital that you get the order of preferences right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. You may be tempted to name just one school on the online application as it is the only school you want for your child. However, there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To increase the chances of your child being offered a preferred school, we strongly advise you to list up to six preferences on their application.

There are various types of secondary schools to choose from including academies, voluntary aided, foundation, and free schools. And it is here where the oversubscription criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the oversubscription criteria and match them to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for places.

Schools arrange open days/evenings where you can find out more about what they offer - you are strongly advised to check each school’s website

for details on how and when they will be holding their open day/evening, as this may be subject to change at short notice.

Make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives - this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2026/27 brochure and the Starting secondary school in Lambeth 2026/27 booklet, as well as other boroughs.

The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that your child might not be offered a place at that school. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

Do use all six preferences - however, you need to be wary about only choosing schools which are heavily over-subscribed. You should name your first preference school on the application, but also list preferences where your child has a realistic chance of being offered a place.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital decision for your child’s future.

If your child is in Year 6 and currently attending one of Southwark’s or Lambeth’s primary schools, you will receive further information from your child’s school.

If you are a Southwark resident you must apply online at: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions or if you are a Lambeth resident you must apply online at www.lambeth.gov.uk/eadmissions

Alleyn’s

The online application process gets rid of the paperwork and is available to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The site allows users to save, continue or make changes to their application, right up until the closing date and your details are safe and secure. You will receive an email with a summary of your submitted application and you can also view the outcome online. The closing date to submit the online application is 31st October 2025 by 11.59pm.

You also need to ensure that you complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) for the schools that require these and submit it to the school by their individual deadline. These ask for further information, such as religious observance or regarding school specialisms. Where a school requires your child to sit an admissions banding test, it is vital that they sit the test. If you are applying to a secondary school that uses banding within its criteria, your child will be required to take a test. Please contact the school directly for further details on banding test arrangements. If you are thinking of applying to schools that test for ability/aptitude, you must ensure that you register your child for the ability/aptitude admission test before each school’s published deadline and you must also submit your child’s online admissions application by 31st October 2025. Failure to provide a SIF to the school by their deadline and your child sitting a banding test or an ability/aptitude test, where these are needed, may significantly reduce the chances of your child being offered a place at a school on your application.

Children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a different admissions process and parents and carers must contact the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team within their local authority for further advice.

Once you have made your preferences and submitted your online

Secondary Schools 5

application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions.org.uk) during the evening of 2 March 2026. You will also be sent an email in the evening of 2 March 2026 which will contain information on what to do next.

If it was not possible to offer a place at any of your preferred schools, then the School Admissions Team will allocate your child an alternative secondary school. This is likely to be the nearest school to your child’s home which has a vacancy. You also have the right to appeal against the decision not to offer your child a place at a preferred school. The email containing the outcome of your child’s application will include information about how to appeal.

If it has not been possible to offer a place at any schools named as a higher preference on your child’s application, your child’s name will automatically be added to the waiting lists of these schools. You may also ask for your child’s name to be added to the waiting list of any out of borough schools listed on your application. Please contact the local authority the school is located in for further information.

If your child has been offered a secondary school place, you have until 16 March 2026 to respond to this offer. For those who live in Southwark, if the School Admissions Team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and your child’s details forwarded to the allocated school. If you live in Lambeth, the School Admissions Team require all offers to be responded to, ie accepting these by 16 March 2026.

Only if you reject the offer and also provide details of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, will your child’s place be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

Graveney School’s open days events

Graveney School is holding an Open Event for Yr 7 pupils on Thursday 16th October from 8.45am-12.20pm & from 5pm-8pm. We will be offering the opportunity for families to book tours of the school.

Graveney’s Sixth Form Open Evening will take place on Tuesday 14th October from 5.30pm-8.30pm. The Sixth Form will also be offering the opportunity for current Yr11 students from other schools, accompanied by their parent/legal guardian, to book tours of the school for that evening. Further details regarding how to book these tours for prospective Yr7 pupils & 6th Form students will be available on our website in ‘Admissions’ section at the end of September. Graveney benefits from a beautiful, leafy campus, comprising eleven buildings including a former Georgian stately home, a Victorian school building, several architecturally interesting blocks built in the 1960s, a prizewinning new block which opened in 2016 and a second new block was completed in September 2019, which includes 10 humanities classrooms and an observatory. This state of the art Oppenheimer Observatory was awarded the New London Architectural Award in 2020. In 2025 we had our best ever GCSE results, 89% of our students achieved 4+ in English and Mathematics, 78% received 5+ in both and an incredible 52% of all grades were 7 or above. The school’s overall attainment score places it in the top 10% of schools in the country. Graveney has also been deemed ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted on six occasions.

Each year, Graveney’s results remain not just consistent but consistently exceptional, providing further evidence that our mantra of ‘Committed to Excellence’ is reflected in everything we do.

Graveney’s Yr7 pupils are drawn from a wide number of local schools, the vast majority of pupils living locally. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, a wide range of sports, musical and cultural extra-curricular activities are offered to ensure that pupils are well rounded and encouraged to excel in a variety of different walks of life. There is particular emphasis on outdoor education - the school is one of the largest Duke of Edinburgh centres in the country and all Year 7 Graveney pupils participate in a week-long trip to Wales. Both of these outdoor pursuits help students to build confidence, resilience and a tight-knit community within the school. Graveney Sixth Form students benefit from the collegiate feel of the campus, which provides a well-supported transition to University and into the world of work. Students

can choose from over thirty A Level subjects and a small range of vocational courses, all taught on the Graveney site. The Sixth Form attracts a diverse range of students, from its own Year 11, as well as from other schools, who quickly settle into a cohesive academic community where aspiration is nurtured and opportunity is celebrated. Students benefit from access to over 20 student run clubs and societies, as well as Sixth Form Sport and a Wider Enrichment Programme.

Students mainly progress to Higher Education, with a large proportion going on to Russell Group Universities (49% in 2025) or prestigious degree apprenticeships. The school has consistently remained in the top twenty schools in Inner London, and of these in the top ten state schools, for Oxbridge entry with 7 students gaining Oxbridge places in 2025. Additionally, 6 students were accepted into Medical School, 1 into Veterinary Medicine and 1 into Dentistry last year. Students make excellent progress and success is valued in all its forms. The Sixth Form provides a dynamic and positive experience, to enable all students to achieve their goals.

Graveney looks forward to welcoming you to the school’s Open events. They provide excellent opportunities for prospective pupils and their parents to have a tour of the school’s facilities, to visit subject departments and see our exciting approaches to teaching as well as to find out the answers to the many ‘frequently asked questions’.

James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) has been inspiring generations of young women for almost 300 years.

While renowned as London’s oldest independent girls’ school, it continues to set the standard with a forward-thinking education which celebrates diversity and access.

Central to its vision is an extensive and generous bursary scheme, allowing the school to continue attracting intellectually curious girls, regardless of their economic background.

Around 17% of Senior School students receive this transformational, life-changing bursary provision. JAGS offers financial assistance for up to 100% of the fees, as well as covering the costs of uniform, travel, school trips and lunches.

Students flourish in an environment which nurtures selfconfidence and independence, while feeling supported through outstanding pastoral care from dedicated members of staff and their peers.

Whether it be in the Junior School (ages 4-11) or Senior School (11-18), students balance their scholarly achievements with a dizzying array of enrichment opportunities. This is an environment where passionate individuals thrive in an atmosphere of compassionate challenge.

At GCSE and A Level, the school consistently achieves among the highest results in the country, particularly in STEM subjects, and students regularly go on to study at some of the world’s most prestigious universities.

The Sunday Times named JAGS as the London Independent Secondary School of the Year for 2024 in recognition of the energy and innovation that is embedded throughout all areas of school life. The school has also received national recognition for both its commitment to social mobility and its innovative approach to sustainability.

Far from resting on past accolades, the school is constantly

looking to evolve and improve. Its unrivalled and dynamic curriculum is continually reviewed by its passionate teaching staff, who are experts in their respective fields, allowing students to develop genuine interests in and around subjects amid an everchanging educational, digital and social future.

While academic excellence and success are important, they are only part of the equation. Staff also work to help students develop their creative, athletic, and social skills.

Students in Years 7 to 10 are enrolled in Curriculum Plus – a carefully curated series of courses which ensure students thrive at JAGS and leave the school as lifelong learners and change-makers ready to champion inclusivity, sustainability and social awareness.

The bespoke courses, which range from Public Speaking Mastery to Metacognition, are designed by specialist members of staff and enhance learning beyond the assessed curriculum in an evolving framework focusing on student independence and selfdetermination.

Outside the classroom, there are a myriad of co-curricular clubs and activities on offer which allow students to fully explore their interests and passions.

The 22 acres of stunning grounds house the school’s iconic Botany Gardens, as well as a state-of-the-art sports hall, complete with a 25-metre swimming pool, climbing wall and gym. Elsewhere, the school’s Prissian Theatre (which can be set up traditionally or in the round) offers the perfect arena for both lessons and stage shows.
