SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is set to lose £20 million over the next three years under government funding reforms, it has been estimated by the Lib Dems.

Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Stephanie Cryan, said in a council report dated December 2 that the funding changes will leave Southwark facing a financial black hole of between £60 million and £90 million over the next three years.

This is because the council spends more every year as demand for its services increases, particularly on temporary accommodation and adult social care, which will not be matched by revenue from council tax, business rates and grant funding.

The government began consulting on the changes to the council funding system, called the Fair Funding Review 2.0, in June.

They said the reforms were designed to rebalance funding so more money went to the areas with the greatest need.

Over the next three years Southwark will see its total Core Spending Power (CSP) – the money the council has to fund its services – increase by £38 million.

The council’s CSP includes revenue from council tax as well as government grants.

According to analysis by the Lib Dems, when council tax assumptions are removed from the overall projected spending power of the council, the £20 million cut is revealed.

Excluding council tax, Southwark’s CSP will drop from £318.2 million in 2025/2026 to £297.7 million in 2028/2029, a £20.5 million reduction.

Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats Victor Chamberlain accused the government of “cutting Southwark’s funding and trying to hide it by assuming big rises in council tax that aren’t realistic.

“When those numbers don’t stack up, the council is going to be forced to burn through reserves and slash services, and it’ll be residents who are left paying the price for Labour’s cuts.”

In a council report from December 2 outlining its budget for next year, Cllr Cryan said due to the new funding settlement Southwark would be “looking at a funding gap of £60m – £90m” over three years.

Cllr Cryan had warned back in July when the changes were first announced that they could

leave Southwark Council facing a smaller black hole of between £23 million- £68 million.

During a meeting of the Cabinet on July 7, a council officer said the £68 million figure in fact represented a “very understated scenario” and warned the actual figure would “definitely” be higher.

Over the summer, Southwark Council leader Sarah King joined other London council leaders in calling on the government to rethink the changes.

They said the proposals would “disproportionately impact already deprived urban neighbourhoods and vulnerable families” and called on the government to change the formula to give more weight to the cost of housing.

The government agreed to drop the controversial change to the deprivation index but the proposals do not address other concerns raised by London council leaders, including changes to the children’s services formula.

Reacting to the latest proposals Cllr Cryan said: “Too many people in our borough face deep inequality and hardship and it’s vital they get the help and services they need.

“Like many councils, we face increasing budget challenges, including rising need from local people for temporary accommodation and adult social care, at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living.

housing costs into consideration for the funding settlement and we’re pleased they listened. We will be asking the government to make further changes in the consultation for the funding settlement.

“We’ve published our proposals for a balanced budget for 2026 to 2027 and continue to invest in the frontline services to help our residents live good lives in our borough.”

Reacting to the funding announcement on Thursday, Cllr Claire Holland, the Chair of London Councils, said the funding reforms were a “step in the right direction” but that council finances in London remained “extremely challenging”.

“A combination of long-term structural underfunding, skyrocketing demand for services and spiralling costs have left town hall finances across the capital under enormous strain,” she said.

“We welcome the decision to use up-to-date council spending data to determine allocations and deprivation measures that factor in housing costs. This is a far more accurate approach to measuring deprivation and its impact on levels of need, not just in London but across the country.”

However, she added that “the outlook for council finances in London remains extremely challenging.

“We are grappling with a £1 billion budget shortfall this year and more and more boroughs are likely to require emergency borrowing to

plug the gap.”

London Councils have highlighted the funding pressures in the capital driven by homelessness, with around 210,000 Londoners living in temporary accommodation arranged by their borough.

However, despite the huge increase in housing costs, the amount the government pays councils through the welfare system to subsidise temporary accommodation has been frozen since 2011.

Research from the London School of Economics has suggested a £740 million annual shortfall across London boroughs due to the temporary accommodation subsidy gap.

Southwark’s temporary accommodation spend in 2025 was forecast at the start of this year to be £37.2 million, rising to £41 million in 2026.

Minister of State for Local Government and Homelessness, Alison McGovern, who before becoming an MP was a councillor in Southwark said: “Deprivation doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s the result of years of broken systems and wrong priorities. This settlement tackles that head-on by directing funding where it’s needed most.

“By fixing the link between funding and deprivation, we’re giving local areas the tools to create opportunities, support families and rebuild the services that hold communities together. This is how we deliver a fairer Britain where everyone has the chance to succeed.”

By Issy Clarke SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has spent the same amount on knocking down and rebuilding the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth since 2015 that it estimated refurbishment would cost 20 years ago.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by this newspaper shows that the council has spent £346,546,486 on the regeneration since 2015 - the amount the local authority predicted it would cost to refurbish the estate 20 years ago.

The Aylesbury Estate - famously visited by then new Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1997 when he spoke of ‘forgotten people’ - is one of Europe’s biggest estate renewal projects.

Forced to make a decision on the future of the 1970s estate back in 2005, councillors opted to knock down and rebuild the estate rather than refurbish, the cost of which at between £315-£350 million they said would be ‘excessive and would not produce an area significantly different from the existing estate’.

The then-Liberal Democrat led local authority pushed ahead with demolition, partly on the basis that rebuilding the estate with a mixture of social and market homes would be “broadly cost neutral” because the money generated by the private sale homes would offset the costs of the regeneration.

Ten years later, in 2015, Notting Hill Genesis was given planning permission to begin tearing down each block of the 2,800-home estate one by one.

So far 739 homes have been built in total and there are 321 more which are under construction.

The figure of the number of finished homes includes 122 on a site called Plot 18 which was finished this year. There are 36 homes in a bail hostel which is leased to the Ministry of Justice.

And there are 581 homes on a portion of the estate called the First Development Site which were purchased by the council in 2020 so they could be let out as council homes. There are also brand-new community facilities like the Una Marson Library, Harold Moody Health Centre and a new home for the Mentivity community centre.

Of all the homes built by NHG so far, 85 per cent are classed as affordable, with 3,575 homes due to be completed by 2036 of which 50 per cent will be affordable.

The council has stressed that it isn’t fair to compare the costs of the scheme today with 2005 estimates, given that £350 million in 2005 works out at around £625 million in today’s money when adjusted for inflation.

It also said that part of the reason councillors opted for demolition was that the old estate was largely built using Large Panel Blocks - pre-fabricated concrete panels which are known for being structurally unreliable and prone to gas explosions.

However, with the project not even a quarter of the way complete, and amid continued delays, the revelations raise questions around how much the council will have spent once the regeneration is finished.

It leaves open the possibility that the council could end up spending at least half a billion pounds when the regeneration is complete, which could be years if not several decades into the future, if it is ever finished at all; although the council has consistently said it remains committed to the renewal of the estate.

We have submitted further FOIs asking the council to give us a complete breakdown of exactly what is included in the £350 million figure - which we do

We have also asked for an update on how long the authority can now realistically expect the regeneration will take to complete, and the amount it expects the entire project will cost once finished.

Councillor Ketzia Harper, a resident of the estate who recently contacted us to share her concerns about the delays to the regeneration, said she was ‘shocked’ by the figure and renewed her calls for the local authority to end its partnership with NHG. However a spokesperson for NHG stressed it was now “awaiting the completion of the final stages of the planning process before we have all the legal permissions to move to the next phase of development” which had been ‘beyond its control’.

“Ever since we entered our partnership with Southwark Council in 2014, we’ve worked towards completing affordable and quality homes for the local community,” the spokesperson said.

Commenting on the financial spend, Harper questioned “the point at which the council will make the judgement that they can’t continue with it anymore because it just isn’t providing good value.

“We’re spending so much money propping up the regeneration, but at what point do they say this partnership isn’t worth it for us?

“I’m shocked that it has got to this point

while the council know how much it has cost.”

Harper added that, based on these figures, she “absolutely believed” the council should have retrofitted the estate back in 2005.

“Residents at the time were balloted and said they would have preferred that,” she said.

While the estate is doubling in size with the regeneration, Harper said that the “density increase does not benefit the council because most of the increase is not driven by council or social homes, so it will not reduce the size of waiting lists.”

Sam Foster, the leader of the Southwark Green Party and councillor for Faraday ward where the estate is located, said: “This project was embarked upon as a total demolition because of a prevailing prejudice against council estates. It should never have been done in that way, and thankfully such an approach has few advocates these days.

“It’s time for Southwark to grasp the nettle: end partnership with NHG, be open with residents about what hasn’t worked, and work with them to build a new way forwards to invest in and maintain the estate for the benefit of its residents, including through retrofitting.”

Aysen Dennis, a long-time Aylesbury resident who took the council to court in 2021 over the regeneration, said residents “had been clear they wanted refurbishment”, referring to a 2001 ballot where 70 per cent of residents voted against the regeneration.

She said: “Instead of using that money to improve the estate they have spent around £190 million on buying back council flats from the developer.”

Aysen, who was moved out of her old flat in the Wendover block - which is slated for demolition - three years ago into one of the new-builds, continued: “I’m now living in one of the new flats, but everything has been so cheaply done. I still miss my old flat every day.

“People are desperate for a place. That is why the council should realise that all of the empty flats can be refurbished and let out.”

Helen Dennis, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for New Homes & Sustainable Development, said: “All the new council homes on the Aylesbury Estate are built to a high standard, including high energy efficiency to help residents with energy bills; retrofitting old buildings on the estate could not achieve such high quality. We welcome reports of any issues in our council homes from tenants and we will investigate and put things right.”

The NHG spokesperson said the decision to “regenerate rather than refurbish has meant strong progress to develop a vibrant, thriving community with quality public realm, vital services and improved areas for play and relaxation.

“The regeneration has also meant we’re able to provide larger, family-sized homes addressing the growing demand for spacious housing.”

Another Aylesbury resident, Jackie

Sumersford, who is living in a block due to be demolished later on in the regeneration, said that, while she was reluctant to leave her home, she felt the council had no choice but to demolish the estate.

“A lot of residents at the time said no to demolition. But from what I can make of it the cost of retrofitting the flats would have been too high.

“The blocks are past their sell-by date.

They were only supposed to be up for so many years. Now you’ve got leaks everywhere - everything is going wrong.”

Ketzia Harper spoke out in October to express her concerns about the huge number of properties standing empty in buildings which were cleared of most of their residents at the start of 2023, claiming that there wasn’t a date for when they could be demolished. She said that in the meantime the empty properties were becoming magnets for squatting and drug-taking.

She submitted two questions to the local authority, ahead of the July and October full council meetings, both of which were not selected for discussion, asking how much had been spent on securing the estate and whether the council would look at ending the development partnership.

The council tried to exit the development partnership back in 2023, but was forced to scrap the plans amid a souring of economic conditions.

Seemingly admitting that the project was in a state of crisis, then-housing chief Stephanie Cryan recommended that once

phase 2b was complete the council should make significant changes and explore a ‘revised way forward for rebuilding the Aylesbury Estate, to provide more council homes and to make the estate greener, working hand in hand with Aylesbury Estate residents,” citing issues with poor

resident involvement and the council’s ‘over-reliance on a single developer’.

5:19 But in 2023 the plan fell through, with Cllr Helen Dennis suggesting that former Prime Minister Liz Truss’s mini-budget, which saw inflation sky-rocket, scuppered

the council’s plans.

Cllr Dennis said: “The devastating impact of the Government’s economic decisions led to rapid inflation and much higher interest rates, resulting in an extremely challenging context.”

The local authority has recently cracked down on squatting, clearing 700 squats over the summer and securing four of the mostly-empty buildings which are due to be demolished at some point as part of Phase 2 of the regeneration and deploying 24/7 security to police the empty parts of the estate.

Our FOI also revealed that the council has spent £643,711.59 on securing the estate since 2015, of which £582,373.56 is on 24-hour security, which the council expanded on the estate this summer.

We asked if it could also tell us how much had been spent on clearing the squats, but we were told that the council did not hold that data because of the number of departments which were involved in the process.

However, the FOI did reveal that the cost of securing the estate against squatting amid delays has entirely been borne by Southwark Council, with NHG not contributing financially because the development agreement “made no provision for Notting Hill Genesis to make contributions for security outside of the active development phases that they had an existing Building Lease for.”

NHG has said it only become responsible for security when it took on the lease for building plots, which only occurs once all conditions, including planning, vacant possession and viability, are met.

We also asked the council if it could provide documents detailing any discussions with the developer about ending the partnership since 2023, but

were told this would exceed the cost limit allocated to FOI responses.

The council told us this was because there were at least 13 monthly meetings in which the Aylesbury could have been discussed, adding up to 468 meetings across the entire three-year period suggesting not only council funds but also countless hours of officers’ time had been absorbed by the regeneration.

Compounding speculation over its ability to complete the project, last year Notting Hill Genesis recorded a £129 million financial shortfall, due to building safety work and cost-overruns on a scheme in Croydon, as reported by Building.co.uk.

The company, which will become the landlord of thousands of residents on the estate once the scheme is finished, was also slapped with a non-compliant ‘G3’ governance grade by the Regulator of Social Housing in November, over delays in carrying out fire safety improvements and a mounting repairs backlog.

Cllr Dennis added: “The Aylesbury Estate is one of Europe’s biggest estate renewals, which has already created more than 580 new council homes and brand-new community facilities like the Una Marson Library, Harold Moody Health Centre, a new home for Mentivity community centre and other estate improvements.

“We’re committed to the renewal of the Aylesbury Estate, including delivering hundreds more homes for social rent, alongside good new community facilities, in the months and years to come.

“The Aylesbury renewal is replacing old blocks, including many ageing Large Panel System (LPS) blocks, and also tackling design challenges on the original estate.

“The estate renewal was always planned

to take place over many years. However there have been delays that we know have affected residents. We’re sorry for the impact they have had and we’re doing all we can to help and support local people.”

A spokesperson for Notting Hill Genesis said: “We are very proud of the progress we have made in the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate, which will replace old, inefficient homes that are no longer fit for purpose with warm, safe, highquality housing that will benefit existing and future residents alike. So far we have delivered more than 700 new homes, of which 85% are affordable housing, alongside a beautiful new library and large health centre.

“Southwark Council’s decision to regenerate rather than refurbish has meant strong progress to develop a vibrant, thriving community with quality public realm, vital services and improved areas for play and relaxation.

The regeneration has also meant we’re able to provide larger, family-sized homes addressing the growing demand for spacious housing.

“We are awaiting the completion of the final stages of the planning process before we have all the legal permissions to move to the next phase of development. This has been beyond our control and we have done all we can to mitigate the effect on residents. Ever since we entered our partnership with Southwark Council in 2014, we’ve worked towards completing affordable and quality homes for the local community.

WWII BABY ABANDONED ON CHRISTMAS EVE REUNITES WITH HIS BROTHER AFTER 81 YEARS

By Evie Flynn A MAN who was abandoned as a baby on Christmas Eve in 1944 has reunited with his long lost brother, after finding out he lives less than a mile away in Kennington.

John Moore, 81, was abandoned as a baby in the midst of the London Blitz and was taken to St Thomas’ Hospital by a policeman, earning him the nickname ‘Bobby’ by nurses.

At four years old, John was adopted and had a ‘happy life’, but still wondered who his biological parents were.

Eight decades later, 70-year-old Lucas Borg from Kennington was given an at-home DNA test by his daughter Ella, which revealed a strong family match.

John’s had also done a DNA test with the same company and he reached out to Ella after she was revealed as being a close DNA match.

Further testing confirmed that John and Lucas are half-brothers and that their father was a Maltese immigrant who served in the British Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Lucas confirmed that their father never knew John existed.

John’s DNA test had revealed that he had close ties to Malta, but talking to Lucas he had no idea whether this was on his mother’s or father’s side.

The brothers met and were struck by their likeness and immediate bond and Lucas has given John a ring that their father wore every day of his life.

He sent the following message to John: “I have a ring that our father

“You can have this ring if you decide to wear it all the time and when you stop wearing it, it is returned back to

me. What do you think?”

MP LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE YOUTH SERVICES IN PECKHAM

By Issy Clarke MP MIATTA Fahnnbulleh has launched a campaign calling for youth services in Peckham to be extended, amid her concern that young people “are now the loneliest age group in Britain.”

The Peckham MP’s campaign, launched on December 12 in partnership with the Co-operative Party, aims to make sure there is a youth centre within a 10-minute walk of every child in Peckham.

To mark the launch Fahnbulleh met with leaders of youth services in Peckham Levels to identify where the new spaces could be created and which areas should be a priority.

The government recently announced plans to invest £500 million in improving youth services. It wants to build or refurbish 250 youth centres around the country and create 50 ‘Young Futures Hubs’ where young people can get career and mental health advice.

MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER OF WOMAN IN NORTH WALWORTH

A MAN has been charged with the murder of a 58-year-old woman on Rodney Road in North Walworth.

Julie Wilson, 58, was discovered dead at a property on Rodney Road on Sunday 14 December.

James Flanagan, 53, of Stead Street, was charged with her murder on Wednesday 17 December.

Police said they were called to a residential address on Rodney Road at 2:23 pm on Sunday, 14 December ‘following concerns for the welfare of a woman.’

They discovered a woman in her 50s dead who has now been named as Julie Wilson.

Her family are being supported by specialist officers.

Paying tribute to their Mum, Julie’s daughters said: “Julie Marie Wilson,

a beautiful loving soul and mother to three daughters. Someone who loved without limits, gave without asking, who had a smile and a laugh that could light up any room. We’re counting down the days to be reunited with our Mum again. We will be loving and missing you forever, Mum.” Flanagan was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and has now been charged with the crime.

Detective Inspector Mark Franklin, of the Met’s Specialist Crime South, said: “Our thoughts are with Julie’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“While a man has now been charged, our investigation continues, and we urge anyone with information who has not yet spoken to us to come forward.”

Is local Labour fighting funding cuts?

T

his week we reported on the new local government funding settlement, which will leave Southwark facing a financial black hole of between £60 million and £90 million over the next three years.

When the government first published the proposals, we were confused at first: they claimed Southwark’s spending power would be going up by £38 million over the next three years, but the Lib Dems told us Southwark would in fact face a £20 million cut.

They had noticed that the government’s figure included both the amount Southwark would be getting in government grants as well as revenue from council tax if increased by the maximum amount over the next three years. The cut is only revealed once council tax assumptions are removed.

The Lib Dems have been scathing about the impact of the reforms on Southwark’s finances, with Southwark group leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain accusing the government of placing the council in a position where it will have to burn through its reserves, and the local Labour administration of failing to stand up to them.

His criticism is not entirely fair; Sarah King was vocal over the summer in her opposition to the draft proposals when they were first published, taking particular issue with a plan to remove housing costs from the deprivation calculation used to allocate funding.

However, we probably have not seen the level of political criticism of the government for the funding settlement that we might have expected if the administration responsible for cutting the borough’s funding was the previous Conservative one.

This is the problem in London where every tier of government is controlled by one party: it means you often see councils and the Mayor anxious not to openly criticise the government or one another, even where their interests diverge, for fear of breaking ranks politically.

There are benefits to a council of having their party colleagues in government: it can make it easier for council leaders to develop a constructive dialogue with ministers, unimpeded by political or ideological differences.

But political loyalty can also block criticism between tiers of government, and opposition is a healthy and essential component of a functioning democracy.

Will we hear from our local Labour MPs about this loss of funding for their constituents? You have to hope they will have something to say the government reducing support for their borough.

IT’S THAT time of year again: Panto season! The busiest period for theatres up and down the country, as soap stars, reality TV personalities and… Jeremy Corbyn (?) prepare to take to the stages of

regional theatres and entertain crowds of screaming kids, parents and grandparents, writes Melina Block.

Cinderella is the pantomime of choice this year at Richmond Theatre, with a

delightfully eclectic cast ranging from Helen George of BBC’s Call The Midwife fame as the glitzy fairy godmother, to household name Basil Brush as Baron Basil, ruler of the land.

The perfect family showand carols for catastrophe AS SOON as you walk in you feel something, there is a buzz of anticipation, the set warmly overwhelms while the projected graphics slink off the stage and along the walls to bring the Savoy Theatre to life. There are just a few children at this evening performance because this is Paddington the Musical and his fans stretch right back to 1958, and it showed in the audience age range, writes Michael Holland.

The show opens in Mr Gruber’s shop of curiosities before transforming into a hectic station with people too busy to stop. Through the crowd emerges the bear the nation has come to love who is greeted by the house with a big, soft ‘Awwww’. He is lost and homeless. Awwww, again.

Much against the will of Henry Brown, his wife and children adopt the bear, naming him Paddington after the station and Brown after them. The Browns’ relationship is rocky and as it worsens over the coming days, Henry blames Paddington, forcing him to quietly

Set in the 1920s, the play follows two long-time friends whose comfortable but staid marriages are suddenly unsettled by a postcard from their former mutual lover Maurice Duclos — indicating his imminent arrival.

Janie Dee and Alexandra Gilbreath are superb as fiery friends Julia and Jane. At first, they try to flee the attractive Frenchman but “virtue is far easier to maintain before temptation sends a postcard.” So they settle into a drunken evening of waiting and contemplating the unthinkable. Will they betray their nice but predictable husbands and each other? A long, inebriated night stretches their friendship to breaking point with much hilarity along the way.

This play is a joyous romp with an exquisite set and beautiful costumes. It is a feast for the eyes and tonic for the weary preChristmas soul. If the two nonpantomime dames weren’t enough already enough fun, the icing on the cake comes in the form of maid Saunders. A precursor to Nessa from ‘Gavin and Stacey’, Saunders constantly upstages her employers with her skills and stories. A concert pianist, former Ballet Russes dancer and golfing expert, she knows she is wasted in the kitchen. The choreography of the whole play is tight, but Saunders gets the best of it and dazzles as she dances.

When ‘Fallen Angels’ premiered its scandal lay in the idea of two women having ‘sown their wild oats’ before marriage. A century on the transgression feels different.

It’s not the impropriety but the vitality — the frank desire, the refusal to retreat into matronly invisibility — that feels quietly radical.

including the endearing, goofy Buttons, in a performance from Charlie Stemp that perfectly balances the line between awkward sidekick and bubbly comic relief. The wicked stepsisters, portrayed brilliantly by Stephen Guarino and Jak Allen-Anderson, are another classic panto highlight, strutting around and bouncing off each other’s comedic timing effortlessly. Hope Dawe’s Cinderella is as butter-wouldn’t-melt sweet as one would hope, truly embodying the Disney princess archetype. Tom Major is equally dashing as Prince Charming, while his companion, Michael Lin’s Dandini, rounds out the main cast with another confident performance.

The ensemble performers, although not necessarily the stars of the show, do deserve a special mention. Their boundlessly energetic dancing is the backbone of the production, each of them seeming to actually beam with joy.

It’s easy to dismiss panto, but it would take a real Scrooge to not be at least a bit moved by the infectious joy of the ensemble cast.

Another key element when concocting the magic of pantomime is the costumes.

Courtesy of costume designer Teresa Nalton, every scene in Cinderella is amplified by sequins, glitter and petticoats.

The fairy Godmother’s gorgeous, shimmering gowns are particularly breathtaking, as are the outrageously over the top costumes worn by the wicked stepsisters.

Overall, Cinderella packs all the laughs and sparkles one could hope for from a pantomime, promising a reliably fun night out.

Meanwhile, Millicent Clyde, head of the Natural History Museum, needs a Peruvian Bear for her collection of stuffed endangered species! She is also the daughter of the explorer who Paddington seeks.

There is a lot to take in but with the help of bouncy Tom Fletcher songs to give the narrative legs it is not hard to follow who the Baddies and Goodies are among a huge cast where pretty much nobody is pushed upstage under the direction of Luke Sheppard.

And, yes, the Baddies do get to have more fun, although almost everyone gets a real chance to shine in this production: Bonnie Langford makes the most of Mrs Bird, the lodger the Browns can’t dislodge - even getting to do the splits and high-kicks along with hitting high notes; nerdy Mr Brown gets to rock out with his electric guitar to win the affections of his wife back; Amy Booth-Steel has us in hysterics as Chair of the

But even up against a cheeky Cockney pigeon called Hank, Paddington Bear will always be the star. Made real by Arti Shah inside and James Hameed remotely providing the voice and face movements, he drew the warmest audience reactions. We gave him the love he craved and made him feel wanted forever.

LORENZO DUNCAN bagged a sensational first-half hat-trick from left-back as Fisher fans enjoyed a festive feast in their

3-2 SCEFL Premier Division win against Erith & Belvedere at St Paul’s last weekend.

Duncan struck in the first, thirteenth and 45th minutes in Rotherhithe.

The Fish were 2-0 and 3-1 up before

holding on for their second successive win over Christmas.

Duncan scored the fifth in their 5-0 win against Rusthall the previous Saturday.

Ajay Ashanike’s side are up to ninth

in the table.

Fisher have four successive away games in January - including league, the FA Vase and the Kent Senior Trophy. They travel to Kennington in the league this Saturday (3pm).

Unbeaten Dubois (12-0-1) defended her WBC lightweight title with a dominant performance in Miami.

Despite all three judges scoring it 9990, Greenwich’s Dubois was still critical of her display.

“I felt like I could have done a little bit more - I give myself a B,” the 24-year-old said.

Dubois hadn’t fought since last March but looked sharp from the first bell, catching her opponent with an early right.

Italian Panatta (8-3-1) struggled to land on Dubois, who kept finding the target with right-handed jabs before following up with big lefts.

It felt inevitable that Dubois would eventually send Panatta to the canvas, and the moment arrived in the sixth round via a right hand from close in.

Panatta got back to her feet and survived the handful of seconds to the bell.

Trainer Shane McGuigan urged Dubois to go for the stoppage, but though it didn’t come, the result was never in doubt after ten rounds.

American Alycia Baumgardner, 31, who has lost once in nineteen bouts (with one no contest) called for a fight against Dubois after defending her WBO and IBF super-featherweight titles with a points win over Canadian Leila Beaudoin.

Surrey’s Championship victory over Hampshire. Albert has been part of the Surrey Talent Pathway since unde-9, playing in every age group along the way, and joined the academy in 2024.

Eighteen-year-old French was awarded his first professional contract at the start of the Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign, and took six wickets in four matches in the competition last season. A 6ft7ins tall right-arm fast bowler, French joined the Surrey pathway at the under-14 level and has been a part of the academy for the last two years.

Both Albert and French have been regularly featured for the England under-19s during this cycle. Albert

caught the eyes of many when he took ten wickets in the second Youth Test against India at Chelmsford, while French impressed with a best of 4/81 versus Sri Lanka in a Youth Test at Wormsley.

The Young Lions will be based in Zimbabwe and have been drawn in Group C of the sixteen-team tournament. They open their campaign against Pakistan in Harare on Friday, January 16, before matches against cohosts Zimbabwe and Scotland.

The top three nations from each of the four groups qualify for the ‘Super Six’ stage, with the final to be staged at the Harare Sports Club on Friday, February 6.

By Will Scott at The Den MILLWALL PLAYED out an enthralling Boxing Day draw with Ipswich Town at The Den.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock and snatch all three points, but stubborn defending in both boxes meant the points were shared.

The Lions had to dig in deep late on to protect that point, with Ipswich pouring on expensive replacements, but stood firm in what was one of their best performances of the season.

For the majority of the match, they went toe-to-toe with a side many had tipped for automatic promotion and came away with a credible draw and a real display of their play-off credentials.

Heading into the match, the Tractor Boys were near the top of the division in nearly every stat Opta measures: chances created, fewest chances conceded, possession, pressing metrics, yet did not outmatch Millwall until the closing stages, when legs started to tire.

It was an important response from the depleted Lions, who had suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season prior to the game.

Within the first minutes, it was clear the match would be an exciting, back-and-forth top-six encounter.

Ipswich nearly landed the first blow of the match. Leif Davies beat his marker for pace and put in a ball into the box that Azor Matusiwa badly miscued in a promising position, allowing Billy Mitchell to clear.

The Lions looked to hit back immediately - Alfie Doughty won the ball back and found Tristan Crama, who surged down the right past Camiel Neghli and put in a cross that took a deflection and was gathered by Christian Walton.

Neil’s side were finding a lot of joy down the flanks, and their next chance came from an unlikely source. Jake Cooper put in a crunching challenge to halt an Ipswich counter in its tracks and continued forwards, exchanging passes with Neghli before putting in a low cross that came to Ivanovic, whose first-time, sweeping effort had to be pushed wide by a sprawling Walton.

Millwall’s front six kept causing problems, and in the ninth minute, Aidomo Emakhu won a free kick on the edge of the box that Neghli put into the wall.

curled in a first-time cross that Ivanovic nodded goalwards, but it bounced straight into Walton’s hands.

The Lions’ spell of dominance continued.

Neghli put in a cross that was just about headed over the bar by an Ipswich defender, and from the resulting corner, Taylor connected powerfully with the ball and forced out a good save by Walton.

The match turned for the next ten minutes, with Ipswich on top as they attacked the away end.

Marcelino Nunez came alive and dictated proceedings, winning a free kick after beating a few players in the 18th minute, then hitting the wall with the resulting setpiece.

A minute later, he curled in a cross that Ivan Azon headed straight at Max Crocombe.

Ipswich had all of the ball and the pressure, but the best they could muster was a Leif Davis cross that neither Kasey

McAteer nor Azon could get proper contact on, and a Jens Cajuste long-range effort that went wide.

Nunez took another free kick in the 27th minute, but Crocombe easily gathered.

The match continued at a quick pace, with both sides looking to attack directly with pace, but dogged defending in both boxes denied either side from creating clear-cut chances - with Aidomo Emakhu earning the appreciation of The Den for sprinting back in transition to put in a challenge that prevented Ipswich from getting a shot off.

Neghli’s long-range effort was the sole shot either side had in the closing stage of the half, with the referee’s whistle bringing an end to an enthralling opening 45 minutes.

Ipswich had the brighter start to the second half, with Cedric Kipre having a shot blocked.

Millwall soon found some joy of their own, and in the 56th minute, Ivanovic forced out

a sprawling save from Walton with a volley from well outside the box.

A minute later, Ipswich were up the other end of the pitch, and McAteer fired it in for Azon, who could not sort his feet out from just yards out.

Both sides still had to mostly settle for long-range chances, with Philogene hitting one from range that bounced into Crocombe’s hands.

Millwall had a more clear-cut chance in the 65th minute, capitalising on their height advantage at set-pieces, with Cooper flicking a free kick on for Crama to chip into the box. It came to Emakhu at the back post, who volleyed just over the bar.

As had become the theme of the match, Ipswich responded quickly, with Philogene twisting and turning inside the box before forcing Crocombe into a sharp save.

As legs tired, and Ipswich introduced expensive reinforcements from the bench, they started to gain the upper hand in the

match.

Substitute Sindre Egeli flashed two efforts past the post, Nunez volleyed one over the bar, and Jack Clarke’s ball just evaded the stretching legs of Chuba Akpom.

Millwall had the ball in the net in the 81st minute after Caleb Taylor drove forward in transition and found Neghli, but the winger was well offside.

“We had one second half where Aidomo puts it over the bar, and then we have the goal in the second half that gets disallowed. He was probably half a step offside when it happens.

“The only one I can really remember of note where Max [Crocombe] makes a save is the one where [Jaden] Philogene cuts in on the right side in the second half and saves with his feet.

“All in all, for all the quality that Ipswich have got and for how stretched I think we are at the moment, having to take Billy [Mitchell] off again after 70 minutes to protect him, I thought the lads did extremely well. I was really pleased with the effort they put into the game.

“I didn’t think we deserved to lose the game by any stretch. I thought if anything, if we were going to nick it, it would’ve been us nicking it rather than them. Albeit they did control more of the ball in the second half.”

Neil was asked if he was pleased that his side held on for the draw.

“I think when you say held on, I think that’s a little bit of a disservice, albeit we did sort of concede the ball,” Neil said. “But

I don’t think we were getting peppered by any means. I didn’t think it was chance after chance. The only one I can remember, we actually clear it when it comes across the face of the goal, and Joe hooks it out for a corner.

“I thought we were good value. Keeping a clean sheet was important. The last couple of results away from home haven’t been great, and we needed to make sure we didn’t lose today. I think that’s important for the confidence of the team and the confidence of the fans, certainly at home. We’re playing against what I think we all know is one of the best teams in the league. For us to do what we did today with how many players we’ve got missing, I thought it was a good yardstick for us.”

By Will Scott at The Den MACAULAY LANGSTAFF scored a late winner as Millwall beat Bristol City 2-1 at The Den.

The Lions took an early lead when Camiel Neghli pounced on Rob Dickie’s error, but were nowhere near their best for the rest of the match as Bristol City mostly controlled proceedings.

The Robins deservedly pulled one back shortly after half-time when Adam Randell converted Ross McCrorie’s cut-back, but a lack of killer instinct and ruthlessness meant they were unable to put distance between themselves and the home side, and they were punished in the closing stages.

Neil made a double substitution with 20 minutes to go that shifted the momentum of the match, and a Millwall goal felt likely before Langstaff tapped in Danny McNamara’s cross for his second goal, and winner, of the season.

The win was the Lions’ first in five and has them back in the top six to end 2025 after a brief stint outside the play-off places.

It was expected to be a feisty encounter after the two sides engaged in a melee following the reverse fixture three weeks ago, and the tone of the match was set early on with another clash between the two head coaches.

Sinclair Armstrong went down clutching his head after losing an aerial battle with Jake Cooper, incensing Gerhard Struber, who claimed he was elbowed. Alex Neil vigorously came to Cooper’s defence and even exchanged words with Aniis Mehmeti as the striker remained on the floor.

The flashpoint further energised The Den, with Struber quickly taking on the role of pantomime villain on the touchline - every time he screamed for a decision, he was widely jeered.

The evident dislike between the sides and the two fanbases contributed to a testy affair, in which Millwall drew first blood.

Zak Sturge whipped the ball in the 16th minute, which Dickie attempted to clear but succeeded in only putting the ball on a plate for Neghli, who took a touch and fired in the opener.

However, the Lions surrendered all momentum for the rest of the half and were a distinct second-best, as Neil grew

Bristol City dominated the ball and territory, and had a few chances to equalise before the interval - the best of which came in the 33rd minute, when Ross McCrorie whipped it in, and Armstrong hit it first time, forcing out a save from Max Crocombe.

Millwall had ridden their luck for much of the opening 45 minutes, but found it quickly ran out upon resumption of the match.

Within four minutes of the restart, McCorie squared it for Randell, who fired it in at the near post.

The Lions looked shellshocked and nearly conceded another a minute later.

Armstrong beat Cooper and sprinted on

goal before hitting the sidenetting from a tight angle.

Despite Neil making three substitutions, the match continued in a similar manner to before - Bristol City controlling the ball and territory, but failing to convert that into consistent chances.

Substitute Emil Riis came closest to giving The Robins the lead in the 67th minute, getting on the end of a chipped ball over the top and racing on goal before being put off balance by the recovering Tristan Crama and Crocombe cleared.

The momentum of the match changed when Neil made his final two substitutions in the 73rd minute.

Thierno Ballo had an immediate impact,

playing a quick one-two with Mihailo Ivanovic before firing one in for Langstaff that the striker arrived at a moment too late.

The Austrian winger put in another dangerous ball a minute later, which bobbled around the box, but neither Neghli nor Langstaff could apply the finish.

Pressure was mounting, and eventually it broke in the Lions’ favour.

In the 81st minute, Neghli played a beautiful ball through to Ivanovic, who laid it off to Ballo. It didn’t quite sit up for the winger to hit, so he passed it on to McNamara to fire in. The cross took a deflection, and Langstaff twisted his body to flick it in.

Millwall saw the remaining ten minutes of

the game out, backed by a bouncing Den, to secure the double over their play-off rivals.

3 against a 3-4-box 3 at the top end of the pitch, what happens is if we land on it, our full-backs become spare. That’s where we got the goal from. You end up doubling up down the sides. They got the cross in, and we managed to score coming from the far side. Then, when they land on it, their wing-backs end up in your last line, and your wingers end up pinned back in, and you can’t get out.

“I thought the first half, 1-1 was pretty decent for us. They ended the first half better. The first two minutes of the second half, we actually started okay, and then they wrestled control of the game, and we found it difficult.

“They then got the goal, which was really disappointing. We gave the ball away, then we missed a tackle, and then

they end up scoring.

“Then from there, we’d spoke to the subs and we’d spoke to the players at half-time about changing the shape to a 3-5-2, because what ultimately happens is the spare player becomes in their back line, spare player becomes in our back line, and it makes it much more easy to deal with, shall we say, especially when they’re on top.

“The problem we had was we didn’t push our midfield players through to lock onto their two sixes, which meant every time they were building out from the back, we didn’t get enough pressure.

I think a lot of it was because our players were knackered. There wasn’t anything in their legs.

“I thought the game completely flipped

as soon as we brought [Thierno] Ballo in, because he went up, played against them, and he ran off the front, and it gave us an extra little bit of incentive in terms of attacking and getting forward.

“I thought there were some super performances across the pitch. There were 25 minutes where we really needed to dig in, and Bristol were better, which we did, but the last fifteen minutes of the game, we scored, we could’ve scored again. We had some good moments going forward. We had some really good breakaways.

“Camiel Neghli, the amount of ground that he covered was incredible. That’s regular for Camiel as well. I want to stress that in terms of high-speed running distance. How hard he works is

always in the top end of our team.

“We took Joe [Bryan] out because we were worried that if he started the game, he was going to break down. We took Macaulay [Langstaff] out because we were worried in case he started the game, he was gonna break down. But always with the intention of him coming on. Alfie [Doughty] was knackered.

Mihailo [Ivanovic] was knackered. I’d have loved to have taken him off if I could.

“We all know how depleted we are. We ended the game with [Ryan] Leonard, Ballo, and Camiel Neghli as a middle three. We still managed to win. What that tells you is everything about this team and their squad in terms of they just keep going.”

‘A FITTING END TO THE YEAR’

ALEX NEIL thought Millwall’s dramatic 2-1 win over Bristol City was a “really fitting” way to end the year.

The Lions marked their final match of 2025 by doing the double over their play-off rivals, with Macaulay Langstaff scoring an 81st-minute winner in front of Cold Blow Lane.

The result meant Millwall returned to the top six after momentarily dropping out of the play-off places, and are well poised to take their promotion challenge into the next year.

“I’m really pleased,” Neil said. “This was the last game of this year, and I thought it was a really fitting way to end it. The atmosphere was excellent.

Rowett was appointed a year ago and helped Oxford avoid relegation in their first season in the second tier for 25 years.

While the club searches for a replacement, ex-Lion Chris Hackett will help manage the first team alongside Craig Short and Lewis Price.

Rowett managed Millwall for four seasons between 2019 and 2023, coming close to guiding them to the play-offs in both 2020 and 2023.

“We wanted the game to be a high-octane game, so it’s tackles, it’s running, because when it becomes a little bit predictable and a little bit slow, they’ve got a full squad to choose from at the moment in terms of players that can play that way.

“At the moment, we’re a bit threadbare, which means we can make it a competitive, high-octane, running, fighting type game, and that suits us right now. When we get Casper and Billy back, we’ll be able to do both.”

The win was the Lions’ first in five games after another injury crisis depleted Neil’s squad, especially in midfield, where they are without six senior players.

“You can see in recent games that we’ve been stretched,” Neil said. “Hull springs to mind. I didn’t think Hull

were great in the game. I didn’t think they were brilliant to take it away from us. I thought we took it away from ourselves just by making stupid errors.

“Then, Derby, we conceded a late goal, which is unlike us as well. Then Ipswich, I thought that was a great point for us in terms of how the game was.

“I just think we needed to get a win.

Especially at home, because as we know, the fans are demanding here.

“They expect us to win the home games. That’s what they come for.

They want to be entertained. The game tonight ebbed and flowed. It was certainly entertaining. We managed to get the right side of the result.”

Neil was asked if it boded well that his side were able to grind out results like they did against the Robins.

“Football works in mysterious ways,

though,” Neil said.

“What happens is when you expect, ‘Oh, we’ve got a full squad, we’re going to be brilliant,’ you’ll turn up and get beaten 2-0, and you’ll be crap.

“Then, when you’ve got nobody left, and everybody thinks, “Oh, well, we’re not going to win this one,” you then rock up, and you win the game. It doesn’t work the way that you would think.

“But what I will say is, the players give everything they’ve got. We’ve had to juggle about the squad. We’ve had to change shape, and we’ve had to do that more often recently. Which is not something I really want to do, because if we can stick consistently to what we’re good at, I think we’ll yield good points across the season. But I think right now, it’s helping us plug those spaces and plug those gaps that we’ve got.”

ALEX NEIL explained why Billy Mitchell was withdrawn at half-time in Millwall’s 2-1 win over Bristol City.

Mitchell started the game but was replaced by Ryan Leonard during the interval, with the Lions 1-0 up.

Neil clarified the substitution after the game.

“He could only play 45 minutes,” Neil said. “So I can assure you, the last thing I wanted to do was take Billy Mitchell off at half-time. But that’s where we currently are.”

Mitchell returned from a hamstring tear against Blackburn Rovers on December 20 and was thrown straight into the starting eleven, playing 63 minutes as the Lions lost 2-0.

He then played 71 minutes against Ipswich Town on Boxing Day.
