Summer wasn’t quite as good as last year, although we did get glimpses of it. We also got quite a bit of rain as well in parts, so it was back to a good old unpredictable British summer.

The weekend coincides with Macmillan’s Coffee Day and the event will support Macmillan with profits from the sale of handmade Christmas cards and a range of open cards, showing paintings of local scenes (which are mounted, ready to be converted to pictures), as well as their 2020 Calendar, made from original artwork. A perfect opportunity to start your Christmas Shopping!

In addition to this, a variety of pre-loved art materials and books will be on sale at bargain prices and children will be invited to make a daisy to add to the Art Group’s Daisy Chain, which will be exhibited in the Hall.

All in all, something for everyone and entry is FREE. Refreshments will be available from the Village Hall including a coffee morning followed by afternoon tea on the Friday, in aid of Macmillan.

A NEW DEFIB IN TOWN As you can see from the picture the fund raising efforts to buy and install a New defibrillator at Kiveton Park infants school were a success.

WELL DONE TO ALL INVOLVED A fabulous piece of equipment that we hope never has to be used.

The Saxon Golf Society The first major competition of the year the Ryder cup took place in May at Forest Park Golf Club near York.

The event splits the members into two teams with the older members taking on the younger members. The mornings singles matches are played over 9 holes followed in the afternoon with the doubles over 18 holes and for the third year running the trophy went to the younger team running out winners 6 1/4 points to 3 1/4 point, which equals the 6 times won by the seniors. So all to play for next year then!

The next big event of this years calendar is later in September .

“The Annual Captains Day” Wayne Calvert is our 2019 Captain and the day will be contested over 27 holes at Oulton Hall near Leeds. .

Wales High School A Level Results 2019 A vintage year.

Champagne corks are popping early for Year 13 students of Wales High School, beginning the celebrations of the school’s 50th birthday year with some of the school’s most outstanding results.

Appropriately almost 50% of the grades awarded at A level were grades A*-B, a tremendous achievement for students and staff alike, tripling the amount of A*’s from last year’s performance, with 84%

securing their first choice university.

Our students will be heading off in all directions on the next stage of their life journey with approximately a third attending such prestigious Russell Group Universities as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Durham, Edinburgh, York and Cardiff, and studying all manner of subjects including medicine and paramedicine, dentistry, physics,

spanish, and economics. Others are undertaking different challenges with higher apprenticeships in engineering and accountancy, whilst others are beginning courses in nursing and teaching. A bumper year!

The nervous wait for staff and students was finally over as youngsters arrived at school to pick up their GCSE results.

It was fantastic news for many as they begin to set out their future aspirations.

The number of pupils achieving a standard and strong pass at Mathematics and English has been improved and the school is particularly pleased by the number of top grades attained by students in a wide range of subjects.

There were some excellent individual performances with several students achieving a clean sweep of A* grades.

Thomas Shah achieved 7 9s, 3 As and an A* with distinction in Further Maths with Alexander gaining 4 9s, 2 8s and 1 7.

English Schools Championship bronze Medal winning hurdler Melissa Coxen achieved 4 9s, 3 8s and 1 7.

Other notable successes include Madison Bonsall who was awarded 4 9s, 2 8s and 1 7 and Joseph John who achieved 4 9s, 2 8s and 2 7s.

Headteacher Pepe Di’iasio said ‘What a fantastic achievement by all our students and I take great pleasure in the knowledge that, here at Wales, our young adults are equipped to take on the world and its challenges.‘ RotherhamCouncil currently manage 20,500 properties and have plans to maintain the amount of homes that they own and manage, in a period where the majority of councils are losing parts of their existing stock through Picture courtesy of the History Society the Right to Buy policy.

This year marks 100 years of Council Kiveton Park has a proud history of housing in Rotherham and indeed Council housing. Kiveton currently has nationally since The Housing Act of 375 Council homes, the majority of 1919, often referred to as The Addison which are 2-bed bungalows or 3-bed Act or Homes Fit for Heroes which gave houses. The very first Council estate in Local Authorities the power to build the village was the Limetree Ave/Maple their own houses for the first time on a Road/Chestnut Avenue/Storth Lane large scale. This included housing the estate built in around 1920/21. The vast majority of local families will at some point have lived in a Council house and it is only right that we celebrate this 100 years on from our very first Council housing estate.

Before the Right to Buy policy was introduced in the early 1980’s the vast majority of houses in the village were Council houses or those owned by the Coal Board.

Council housing is woven into the fabric of our community and is part of our proud history. There is still a huge demand for housing provided by the Council and I think we all support efforts to increase this provision.

As we look to the future Rotherham Council are investing over £50million building over 370 new Council houses across Rotherham. Twelve are being delivered in Kiveton on the Redmile development near the old ‘White City’. 9 two-bed houses and 3 twobed bungalows. Although this is very welcomed, keeping pace with replacing those homes lost through the Right to Buy is difficult in the current funding environment but it is good to see the Council is doing what it can.

CELEBRATING THE FIRST 10 YEARS With four years of planning and build, Kiveton Park & Wales Village Hall was officially opened on 26 November 2008 by HRH the Duke of Kent; the new village hall replacing the former Festival Hall.

The land is now held in trust by the village hall’s board of trustees for and on behalf of the community. It cannot be bought, sold or rented and can only be used for its original purpose – ‘recreational means’.

Filled with excitement, anticipation and hope it was finally to become a reality. This was not just another village hall but a village hall like no other. Green technology was at the forefront of its design incorporating ground source heating; rain water harvesting; photovoltaics panels for energy conservation and, to capture all natural light sun pipes, windows from floor to ceiling and skylights were used. In fact, Kiveton Park & Wales Village Hall received two awards for its technology.

The first four years of business were very turbulent; the untimely death of three prominent trustees; the contractors going into liquidation; a list of creditors growing; the threat of court action and a catalogue of outstanding work which was never completed by the contractor. The snagging list still remains today work being completed as and when funds are available. Our main priority is to keep the village hall open and to pay off the loan.

Not all went to plan. The build went over budget requiring the village hall to take out a loan with the Charity Bank for £150,000.00, to be repaid over a period of fifteen years. If business continues at its present rate, we are hopeful the loan will be paid off by 2021.

The village hall is a registered charity; selffunding and managed by a board of unpaid trustees.

It relies heavily on a group of committed members, volunteers and a small band of employees who deserve all of our thanks.

The loan could not be drawn down until the ownership of the land had been addressed. After public consultation, this was resolved by way of a scheme and was formally endorsed by solicitors representing the village hall, parish council and the Festival Hall together with the Land Registry and the Charity Commission.

We are governed by Charity Commission and our Articles of Association. We uphold its original principles to provide a village hall for the inhabitants of Kiveton Park and Wales and the surrounding areas without prejudice of political or

The Lamp & Pony Lounge became the village hall’s trading arm in September 2008. This was managed consecutively by two salaried managers until February 2015, by which time the lounge was struggling financially and near to closure. The trustees made the decision that the lounge would be managed by its four unpaid directors. Doing this has enabled the Lamp & Pony Lounge to refurbish, replace equipment and offer quality brands at affordable prices.

For the people How is our village hall funded? from room hire, fundraising and the Lamp & Pony Lounge.

A wide variety of classes are held regularly at the village hall, a list can be found at the back of ‘Community Matters’. These groups meet the needs of all ages and interests.

The village hall is also a venue for community and health groups – groups such as the police who hold a weekly surgery; Neighbourhood Watch who have meetings on a quarterly basis; ambulance service seminars; diabetes management classes; the Memory Café which meets once a month; Indian culture nights and vocal recital groups.

Our annual events include family discos at Easter, Back to school, Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas – New Year’s Eve is for the adults. Charity events are also held to support the local community and charities by negotiating room hire charges. New to us this year will be the Country Music Showcase.

With the aid of grants from funding it has enable us to replace:• The heating system with more efficient ground source heating • Lights to LED to reduce costs • CCTV with a digital system for secure monitoring There were grants towards the inspection and testing of the electrics; emergency lighting; equipement for

the kitchen and main hall; painting and maintenance of the gardens and seating areas.

It is a flat site so it is easy to walk around if you aren’t sturdy on your feet, it is wheelchair friendly, child friendly and dog friendly. Due to much consultation locally many suggestions have been taken into account even down to a play area for the kids and having somewhere to tie up your dog safely while you visit the facilities.

HS2 Review

He’s Back After nearly twelve months out, Andy Bower is back playing walking football.

You may remember some months ago how we reported Andy had suffered a massive heart attack whilst playing football one night last year at the Kiveton Community Sports Park. Fortunately the quick response of players that night and the emergency services all contributed to saving Andy’s life.

Campaigners as well as local politicians have welcomed

the review into HS2 that was recently announced by the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. A decision on the project to connect London, the Midlands and the North is expected to be made by the end of the year. The proposed HS2 route would cut through villages including Wales and neighbouring Aston.

The review will examine the costs and benefits of HS2 and Mr Shapps refused to rule out scrapping it entirely.

Rotherham Council does not support its current route and leader Cllr Chris Read welcomed the review.

After a month in hospital and a heart bypass operation, followed by months and months of rest and recuperation Andy has decided with the help of his doctor to give it a go once more at playing the game he loves.

All of his team mates were thrilled to see him back playing.

Autumn Issue - Sept 2019

Chairman’s Note Social media is a wonderful thing. Anyone can go onto it and write any unsubstantiated drivel they want. The fortunate thing is that others can correct it. The latest tripe is that we parish councillors are paid and get other benefits for being a councillor. My thanks go to current councillors, retired councillors and members of the public for debunking this myth.

Rotherham Borough ward councillors get about £11,500 a year for representing you, holding surgeries, attending council meetings. They can also claim travel and subsistence allowances but many don’t. Extra “wages” are paid to cabinet members, chairs of committees and the leader.

Parish councillors do have some perks such as being rung up on New Year’s Day to find out who owns a piece of land that has a hole in it and their dog nearly fell in it, or my best one where a man complained that a street light was out on Station Road. My response was that there would be a number on the lamp post and if he rang 01709 336003 (Streetpride) it would be fixed. His answer was, “It’s your effing job, why should I do it?” I don’t respond to foul language so he may be still in the dark.

Station Road must have been the worst road in south Rotherham for a dozen years but constant prods by us has brought it to the top of the list for repair. However, Mrs Lott and her best friend Mona have complained to me in the Co-op about the way it’s being done, the diversion and the buses. The perks of being an elected volunteer!

We should like to thank the customers of Tesco who voted to give us £1000 from the Tesco community grants fund towards the refurbishment of the tennis courts. The money will go towards buying new tennis nets, rackets and balls for the adult and mini-tennis courts. And also towards netball posts and equipment as the newly resurfaced courts will also be marked out for netball. With the support of such community-minded people, we are confident the facility will be a great success.

PUBLIC FOOTPATHS Good news and not so good news.

The good news is that the surface of the footpath from Queen’s Avenue to Stockwell Avenue and the cemetery was recently surfaced with aggregate courtesy of Redmile Homes, the three ward councillors, Cllrs Dominic Beck, Gordon Watson and Jenny Whysall, and us. The brainchild of this project was our own footpaths representative, Colin Savage. Redmile gave us a very competitive price to do the work and the ward councillors shared the cost with us, using monies from their personal community leadership fund budgets. The resurfaced path has received universal approval and will be a boon for visitors to the cemetery, wheelchair and mobility users and mums and dads with prams and pushchairs.

Those of you who enjoy walking the parish highways and byways may have noticed that maintenance has not been as good on some of the paths this year. For some years we have had an arrangement with Rotherham Borough Council

and the South Yo r k s h i r e Community Rehabilitation Company for offenders on community payback orders to maintain the paths under Colin’s direction.

But this year there are not enough offenders on the company’s books and those they have are concentrating on maintenance of churchyards and cemeteries.

RBC said that they would cut the paths we listed as priority paths and Colin gave them a list of the most used paths. But with all the sun and rain we have experienced this summer, it’s been hard to stay on top of them.

We decided therefore to buy a grass trimmer that could be used to cut paths that are particularly important to users.

Colin suggested the footpath from Trent Villas off Colliery Road to the woodland site, which can be used with mobility scooters,

as a path that is valued by walkers and our staff, Glen Westwood and Paul Brookes, recently did an excellent job of cutting it and also removed some overhanging branches. Paul and Glen’s main work is at the recreation ground but they will endeavour to cut key footpaths when they have the capacity to do so. With the extra police officers the new prime minister has promised, there might even be a bigger pool of offenders on community payback orders next year ready and willing to cut our footpaths for us!

BOXING BOOT CAMP On 7 and 8 August, during the school holidays, Olivier Tsemo, who many of you will know as the man behind Kiveton Boxing Club and a qualified boxing coach, ran free sessions from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on the double tennis courts area of the recreation ground for teenagers.

Although we had a number of calls from youngsters who wanted to sign up for the sessions, in the event only three young lads, Matt Barley, Logan Kelly and Thomas Pass, and Ollie’s marvellous family turned up for training. Nevertheless, they had a great time and it was a pleasure to see them all enjoying themselves.

VICTORY IN EUROPE 75 STREET PARTY

On 8 May 2020 seventy-five years will have passed since the cessation of hostilities in Europe.

As part of the national commemoration of the end of the war in Europe, we are putting on a street party on the recreation ground on the afternoon of Saturday 9 May 2020. We have already begun work on preparations for the day and aim to make it a party to remember.

It will have a 1940s theme with music and entertainment provided by artistes who specialise in the period. There will be tables and chairs in a marquee for residents who bring their own food and an area for picnickers if the weather is kind, military vehicles, stalls selling food, drink and goods, etc. Let us know if you have any ideas. It should be great fun!

We should like to hold an exhibition in the meeting room of the council building of your memorabilia from the period, family heirlooms passed from generation to generation because of their significance to the war or a lost loved one. In particular, we should like to hear from family, friends or associates of the servicemen listed on the memorial in The Square who did not return from the Second World War (see list of names below). It would be good to bring their names to life, learn something about them and their families and the part they played in the conflict. BONFIRE NIGHT Hard to believe but it’s only a couple of months to bonfire night! This year the event is set for Friday 1 November. The bonfire will be lit at 6.00pm and the musical fireworks will start at 6.30pm prompt.

by Force Fusion and the usual food, drink and funfair entertainment on the recreation ground car park.

SUPERFAST SOUTH YORKSHIRE – FIBRE BROADBAND IS HERE! Superfast South Yorkshire is a partnership of the four South Yorkshire local authorities: Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

The partnership works with BT and Openreach to fill the gaps in connectivity that have been left by the commercial market. They don’t sell broadband but are focused on helping local residents and businesses to access fibre broadband. How can you get started?

1. First check your postcode The postcode checker on the Superfast South Yorkshire website, www.superfastsouthyorkshire.co.uk, will show you which postcodes are live and able to receive fibre broadband, either through its programme or the commercial market (Openreach & Virgin).

2. Check with your broadband provider If fibre broadband is available, you can upgrade directly with your current provider. If you’re not in a minimum contract period, you can switch to a different provider without penalty.

3. Do your research There are many comparison websites that allow you to compare packages.

Look for average speeds over 30Mbps, check contract lengths and any download limits.

History Makers Our newly formed ladies team have been accepted into the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s League Second Division this season, and recently played six preparatory friendlies their first games EVER! The first of which was a trip to play First Division side Worksop Town Juniors, the side started well but soon lost their momentum and headed into the break 0-7 down.

Rather than letting their heads drop however, the ladies continued to work hard, and in the second half they scored

their first ever goal courtesy of Rachel Fletcher, and a penalty save from goalkeeper Steph Sargent was enough to keep the second half score line all square. A 1-8 defeat, but a terrific effort

from all in what was for many a first taste of competitive football, and lots of positives to take into the start of the season.

This

summer the club hosted its Junior Football Tournaments. Over the course of two weekends (boys and girls tournaments), we have hosted 58 teams, over 350 players and a handful of young referees taking the whistle for the very first time.

We must thank each and every one of the players, coaches, parents and referees who ensured games were played in the right spirit, and congratulate them on a fantastic tournament which saw some fantastic football played.

We must also thank every one of our volunteers for ensuring the tournament ran smoothly.

The tournament has shown that people care greatly for our fantastic community club and we hope those who took pride in lending a hand feel inclined to continue doing so as we seek to further develop a club that provides a superb recreational outlet for the area's young people.

TAK is a non profitable organisation with the aim of rescuing, rehabilitating and re homing ponies, relying entirley on generous donations and the work of dedicated volunteers.

We currently have 28 boys, girls, babies and a beautiful 20yr old donkey. All my boys are gelded, all with passports and up to date with teeth, wormers and farriars. As we head towards the back end of the year I have just taken delivery of 80 bales of hay in readiness for winter all of which has taken a tremendous toll on my funds.

The 1st team which now includes players from last season 2nd team got off to a poor start to the season but have put a run of wins together which has taken them to mid table and hopefully they will remain in Div2.

The 2nd team decimated with last season players moving to the 1st team have found it hard in Div 4 but credit to them for their attitude.

The Sunday Mansfield Div 2 North have had an excellent season and the League Title is in their own hands going in to the final 3 games of the season.

The new practice area pitch and bowling machine have certainly had an effect with practice nights being well attended.

The Rotherham Last Man Standing League has been using our ground 2/3 times a week and this 8 aside game is proving very popular.

The only downside to the season has been the amount of rain which has caused many cancellations in all leagues and it is a credit to our old and new volunteer ground men who have put in many hours to try and get games on.

In the Old Colliery Offices where the Luncheon club is, We have dinner there and sometimes a quiz.

We have a really nice meal, It’s value for money, a very good deal.

We have meat and veg, and a sweet, And have a chat, with friends we meet.

After lunch a game of Bingo, we can play, So it’s eyes down folk, to end the day.

We don’t win much, but it doesn’t matter, It’s just nice to join in, and have a good old natter.

But lets say thank you to the cook, for the meals, That she does make, and not forgetting the helpers for the time you give us, You are just great.

The Wales and Kiveton Park Neighbourhood Watch has been very sssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssuccessful over the past couple of years in establishing more street h Watches, getting our messages out to the local community and have e even secured funding to support us with this work in the future.

But, the fact is that unless we get more members attending our meetings, helping with the events and supporting our activities, then there will not be a NHW anymore in our area. Due to a lack of active Co-­‐ordinators we have been unable to run stalls at events that we normally attend during 2019, including the Harthill Carnival. Just a couple of hours of support over the year would make a big difference.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? To have a Neighbourhood Watch on a road you need at least 20% of the street’s residents to complete application forms. These are then collected by one person who volunteers to be the ‘Co-­‐ordinator’. They will also be asked to pass on messages where necessary and to attend the four yearly meetings, and that’s it! Come along to one of our quarterly meetings to find out more, meet our other friendly local street Co-­‐ordinators and find out how you can help.

NEWS FROM OUR JUNE MEETING We were delighted to welcome Co-­‐ordinators and other local residents to our recent meeting.

Minutes have been circulated to all those who attended.

Following antisocial behaviour by a group of young people outside the venue at the last meeting, the PCSOs in attendance were able to obtain pictures of the offenders from CCTV. These were then used to identify the perpetrators in conjunction with the High School, following which parents and carers were visited by the Police and official proceedings put in place. Further reports of antisocial behaviour by the named persons will result in further arrests and prosecution.

Another success has been that there has been a marked decrease in the number of incidents being reported in our local area. The local Police Officers and PCSOs have been working very hard to support our community after the recent spike and we would like to pass on our thanks. However, as wonderful as this is, the stats do not necessary tally fully with what is reported to Co-­‐ordinators and on social media. We still encourage residents to report any incidents, every time that they occur. To do this phone 101 or you can also report online at reportingcrime.uk. The website is a quick and easy way to submit issues to the Police, and there is a facility to attach pictures or video footage too.

Discovering Kiveton Community Woodland

It’s a park, a nature reserve, and a part of our history. Kiveton Community Woodland is a great place to explore. It’s also a large area to maintain, and it couldn’t be done without our amazing crew of volunteers.

In this Q&A the volunteers guide us through their experience of the woodland.

Do you have a favourite place on the community woodland?

“Love the woods.”

“Love all of the park.”

“The mature woodland on the west side of the site.”

“The view from the top of the park on a lovely day is as good as any.”

Which volunteer tasks have you enjoyed the most this year?

“The creation and maintenance of the nature area has been enjoyable, as has fence removal where you can see immediate impacts.”

“Taking out fences – very satisfying

physical work – feels as though you have let the woodland breath and opened it up for easy access.”

“Creating the path through the woodlands and hoping to see wild animals, although my dog can spoil the peace!”

Have you seen any interesting wildlife so far this year?

“We have seen a slow-worm and several birds of prey – would like to see a deer.”

“I hope to see if snakes have taken residence in the home we created for them.”

“It would be nice to see a deer on the park.”

Has the community woodland changed at all during your time as a volunteer?

“Since I’ve been living here it has changed considerably. More woodland spaces and larger trees.”

“Yes, the removal of the protective fencing in a number of places has encouraged the woodland vegetation to flourish.”

“It’s great to see the difference we make each time we come.”

Would you encourage others to visit?

“YES.” “Certainly.”

“I would recommend for people to come and see for themselves.”

“I would definitely encourage those who are interested in the environment, but anyone can enjoy a walk around the site.”

“Yes, definitely. It’s an amazing resource on our doorstep.”

As we say goodbye to many of our children and families, we also welcome many new families too. We look forward to another fun and exciting term ahead, with endless learning opportunities for our children, to prepare them not only for school but for life.

Nursery: Here at Wales Childcare Partnership we offer a range of sessions to choose from between 8:00am and 6:00pm (dependent upon availability), for 2, 3 & 4 year olds. (8:00-6:00, 9:00-3:05, 9:00-12:00, 12:05-3:05, 8:0012:00, 8:00-3:05, 8:00-4:30, 9:00-4:30, 12:05-6:00, 12:05-4:30). We offer a hot dinner service or the option to bring along a packed lunch. Fresh fruit, milk and water are available throughout every session.

(Including FREE early education funded places for 3 & 4 year olds and eligible 2 year olds).

Breakfast Club and After School Club: Both clubs are very popular with our Nursery children and children attending Wales Primary school. Breakfast club begins at 8:00am and After School Club finishes at 6:00pm.

Holiday Club: Our holiday club is all about having as much fun as every child could possibly imagine. And we don’t even have to look far…… within the grounds of Wales Childcare Partnership and Wales Primary School we have a park, a woodland, playing field, huge outdoor area with climbing frame, willow domes and trees for den building, along with a huge range of resources, games and activities! We offer a flexible system to make holiday periods as cheap as possible!

This summer has been a huge hit with many children attending to join in the fun.

Sessions to choose from: 9:00am-3:30pm = £20.00 9:00am-4:30pm = £23.00 (Includes tea) 8:00am-3:30pm = £23.00 (Includes breakfast) 8:00am-6:00pm = £28.00 (Includes breakfast and tea) Snacks, milk and water are also provided throughout the day, however children are required to bring a packed lunch when attending holiday club.

By Andrea Bennett Many people ask, what is Mothers’ Union, who are you and what do you do ? Hopefully the following will answer some of those questions Mothers’ Union is an International Christian charity that seeks to support families world-wide.

Members represent parents, men, widows, single people and grandparents.

Its main aim is to promote and support married life, especially through times of adversity. Encourage parents in their

role to develop faith of their children. To promote conditions within a society that is favourable to support stable family life and the protection of children.

Its a voluntary organisation, that works with people of all faiths and those of no faith. There are 4 million members of MU in 83 countries improving the lives of families in their communities. There are 1,500 members in the Sheffield area.

The Mothers’ Union at St John’s, has 18 members. We have 10 meetings a year which are a mixture of planned activities, from speakers, to social events and craft evenings.

We often mention the need for helpers (and we still need additional helpers) at Music Tots, which is held every Thursday morning 9:30am – 11:30am at St John’s Room, term time only. But we never mention that this group is open for all people with young children, so please come along for a sing song and a cuppa.

If you are interested in joining MU then please come along to our next meeting on Monday 14th October, at 7pm in St Johns Rooms. Please come along for a chat, a listen to what we do and most of all Friendship.

Please give generously and help us continue to support the homeless in Sheffield. Your donations help feed over 60 people a day with breakfast, lunch and enable us to give out food parcels. This keeps these vulnerable people healthy and clean. To help us meet the needs of this group, we need the items listed below, however, all your gifts are very welcome.

Anna works in Lima supporting the inmates in a female prison. We receive her newsletter regularly and pray for her work.

THE YORKSHIRE LANCASHIRES FROM CORNWALL

Frances Anne Shorthouse, my mother, composed memories of her family during her 85th year and was born in Kiveton Park in 1917, offspring of families drawn here by the sinking of its pit. Her family was brought together from Peggs Green, Leicestershire on her father’s side and Camborne, Cornwall on her mother’s.

Her mother was Elizabeth Ellen Annetta Lancashire (known as “Nettie”) and lived at 77 Little Rows as a child and was one of three daughters of Samuel Lancashire born in Staffordshire in 1864. His first address in the village was simply “94 Kiveton Park” before he moved to Fir Vale, Harthill.

On February 4th, 1888, Samuel married Frances Philippa Roberts, born in Camborne in 1861. She had travelled over 370 miles to Yorkshire as a member of General Booth’s salvation Army Crusaders, setting up camp here to bring religion to Kiveton Park pitmen. In 1901, Samuel and Frances had set up home at 76 Little Rows with daughters Nettie and Ruby and son Joseph. By 1911 they had moved to 47 Wales Road by which time another daughter, Edith Pearl had been born.

Samuel was a corporal at the pit and when he died on Bonfire Night, 1938, he was residing at 16 Waverley Avenue.

Granddaughter, Frances, preferring to go by the name “Ann,” was with mum, Nettie, Dad, John Shorthouse and brother Gordon at 91 Station Road, a house built for her father on fields known as “Scotch Farm.” In 1942, Miss Shorthouse married Tommy Tomlinson from 36 Wales Road, where he worked with his father, Herbert Tomlinson, running the motor garage and general stores. After the war, during which Tommy served for three years with the Military Police in Palestine, he and Ann moved to 41 Storth Lane with son Robert, born in 1942. A daughter, Clare was born in 1959 and Ann died in 2008, aged 91, seven years after Tommy’s death and six years after she penned her memories whilst living in sheltered accommodation in Thames

Ditton, Surrey. Nettie’s sister, Ruby Alrina, remained single.

She ran a tiny sweet shop from the front room of 74 Station Road and she died in sheltered accommodation in Wales in 1972. The remaining Lancashire sister, Edith Pearl, married Albert Jenkins in 1927 and lived at 9 Chantrey Place. They had four children, including a son, Hugh, who died from drowning, aged 8. in 1939. Pearl passed away in, 1975, aged 73 and their older brother, Joseph Roberts Lancashire saw service in the Royal Flying Corps, later the RAF, in WW1. A printer by trade, he lived for sme years at Crowgate, Anston and died in 1970 aged 82.
