The Clocks have altered, the mornings are getting lighter, the birds are chirping out their dawn chorus and the evenings are getting longer, so its all looking and sounding good. It’s only a few more weeks now until the schools break up for the summer, so lets hope we get some good weather for the holidays and of course good luck to anyone taking exams before the end of this school year.

In this our summer edition you can catch up with all the latest news from our parish council on pages 7 through to11. There are updates from the canal trust , our cricket and football clubs, plus a review of the History Society VE day exhibition.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE From the end of July and throughout the six week holidays, Kiveton Library will once again run its summer reading challenge. The challenge is for children from age 4 until 11 year to read six books throughout the holidays. The theme this year is record breakers.

Keep a Lookout as they will also be running other activities throughout the six weeks holidays.

Other events currently on at the Library are teatime scrabble club every Thursday from 5.00 pm all children and family welcome, a free event every week.

Friday mornings from 10.30 is scrabble coffee morning for adults come and have a game a chat and coffee .

Rhymtime every Monday from 10.30 for 0- 3 years, where we sing songs and play instruments.

Every Tuesday from10.30 for 0 – 5 years , sing songs and tell stories and Every Thursday afternoon from 2.00. These sessions continue even when children are on holiday from school and when they have the summer reading challenge.

1st Class delivery Police are hoping that a new initiative will be a first class delivery to communities in Rotherham and increase its visibility in the community.

After hearing concerns that old people were vulnerable to criminals when using post offices. The force hopes its new Adopt a Post Office scheme, launched on May 12th will give a boost to community safety and help its officers get closer to the public.

This new initiative means there will now be police points of contact for all Post Office branches across Rotherham and is about responding to concerns from the local community.

PCSOs and police officers will now attend post offices at regular times to meet the public and staff right across Rotherham as part of the Adopt a Post Office scheme.

UPDATE ON THE PROPOSED COLLIERY ROAD SPORTS FACILITY It is understandable that many of you will by now be wondering what is happening with this development.

And you would be correct in thinking such things as........

March 2014 - Business plan put in place along with architects plans.

Sept 2014 - Representatives from KIVETON PARK FC and major South Yorkshire community and schools sports provider ACTIVE REGEN Join with the trust to push forward the development.

October 2014 - Planning permission granted by Rotherham Borough Council for a new all weather 3G facility with a playing area that can be used as either 3 x 5 a side pitches or a 7 a side pitch.

A cross section survey of the community is completed with 90% responding in favour of the new development. With the overwhelming opinion being that to bring an all weather facility to the community would be an invaluable asset.

Further support in the form of endorsements were received from the Rotherham Health and Wellbeing Trust , The Rotherham Borough Council cabinet member for Business, Regeneration and Sports development and South Yorkshire police November 2014 - HARSCO Steel of Rotherham become involved with the development and offer a huge boost of £200k in kind support of work and materials.

December 2014 - STRATTA homes agreed to donate adjoining land between the current run down sports facility and the Trent Villas, giving us the opportunity to develop a slightly larger 9 a side facility to Football Association standards as opposed to the 7 a side facility and a park and ride facility for the nearby railway station.

April 2015 - SPORT ENGLAND ( Inspired facilities) offer £75K subject to the remainder of the funding being in place.

May 2015 - Bid sent to “POWER OF CHANGE” for the remainder (£275K) of funding still needed.

Sept 2015 - Building work will begin if the last piece of the funding jigsaw is in place.

So, even though things seem to have gone quiet, as you can see, we have been beavering away in the background because we are absolutely committed to make this happen because: It is not just about refurbishing a facility, it’s about improving people’s lives, it would be central in providing a place to develop confidence, teamwork, discipline, increasing opportunities, increasing access and improving people’s health and wellbeing.

The Kiveton womens Club was started by a group of ladies back in September 1969 and in just a few short years will be celebrating it’s fiftieth anniversary.

The main organizers at the time were Mrs Stephanie Bidwell, Mrs Mary Havard and Mrs Sylvia Swift.

At their first meeting there were about 78 ladies present, and a committee was formed comprising Mrs Stephanie Bidwell, Chair; Mary Havard, Secretary; Sylvia Swift, Treasurer; Wendy Harris, Social Secretary and Margaret Turner, Committee.

They first met in St John’s Rooms on Wales Road, before moving to the original village Festival Hall on Walesmoor Avenue, long before the present Hall was built. They now meet twice monthly in the Kiveton Park Cricket Club pavilion.

The club has many interesting speakers on such diverse subjects as Rotherham Samaritans to Steam Railways in different parts of England (MOST interesting!). A more recent speaker gave a talk on Norman Wisdom’s Life Story with many diverse and interesting facts not widely known about that popular comedian. Maggie Nunn, a games maker at the 2012 Paralympics also addressed the club in May They also have visits to (and from) other Women’s Clubs in the Association and attend the National Conference at different venues each year, meeting with friends from other Clubs and Associations In July the club will be celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the NAWC with lunch at Hassop Hall, nr Bakewell, which will be followed by their Summer Break Party.

The next social event will be their attendance at the Harthill Carnival in July where they will have their usual stall. There are many more events, visits and speakers to follow during the year which the members are looking forward to.

EMERGENCY ACCESS Firefighters have warned drivers about bad parking, after crews were recently held up on their way to a large fire in South Yorkshire A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said: “Firefighters are reminding residents to park vehicles responsibly to allow emergency vehicles to get through.“Vehicles parked on both sides of the road make it difficult for fire crews to gain access to a fire or accident site.”

This also applies to other emergency service vehicles such as ambulances.

KIVETON COMMUNITY WOODLAND As we head from spring into summer the woodland has been looking fantastic, with more wildflowers emerging to join and replace the early cowslips and with the trees now being in leaf. The species which have been hiding away for the winter are well and truly out again as well, with sightings of grass snakes around the woodland on the hotter days. They are not venomous and are harmless unless attacked - they are most likely to escape from people as quickly as they can as they are more scared of us! Look out for dragonflies and damselflies around the ponds in the coming weeks as they begin to emerge and start to explore and set up their territories. New willow tit habitat was created over the winter, but so far there are no reports of any nesting signs, but hopefully it will attract some pairs next year. Spring is also one of the times we enjoy having classes on from the nearby Kiveton Park Infants School in the woodland to find out about the creatures we get; pond dipping and sweep-netting are good favourites!

The Woodland Workout group has been continuing its great work, with the replacement of rotting posts and rails making a big difference to the amphitheatre, as well as removing some of the seemingly never-ending fencing! The work earlier in the year is paying dividends, with more wild flowers appearing in the nature area this year. Volunteers from Skillforce have also been helping with fencing, but in their case also repairing some that needs to stay up as well as taking down some which is no longer needed to protect the trees. A final group which has helped with “freeing trees” was a group of volunteers from the Environment Agency, who have an annual day on site to help out with tasks; a big thank you to all the volunteer groups who help to improve the woodland!

In the footsteps of Private Albert Lamb

Private Albert Lamb, a miner, left his home on Manor Road at Wales, on 22nd April 1915 for service with his regiment the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Just a few weeks later, he was on the front line and following an offensive at Hill 60, near Ypres, was reported ‘missing in action’. His body was never found. He was just 21.

Albert’s great nephew Major Kerry Hutchinson, 4th (Volunteer) Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment, will be re-tracing his steps from Kiveton Park to Hill 60 to mark 100 years since his death and raising money for Combat Stress. This charity need your support to continue to help veterans of the armed services.

Heading for a bright future

Whilst the 2015 season has not, as yet, brought the desired results on the field Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club are looking forward to a bright future after tireless work from members has given the club a new lease of life.

Over the past few months more and more players have returned to the club and numbers have swelled dramatically ensuring the club can field two Saturday teams and a Sunday side this season. With South African all-rounder Ari Karvelas added to the playing squad there is a real buzz about the place once more and a real sense of optimism for the future.

Despite all the positive vibes coming from the club more volunteers, members and players are always welcome at the ground which is situated at the bottom of Stoney Bank Drive.

A WINNING START As a Registered Charity Waleswood Sports Cricket Club has enjoyed a successful start to the new season with victories for our two Saturday teams and the Sunday 1st team.

In 2015 we are again running two Saturday teams in Div,s 4/7 of the Bassetlaw league and two Sunday teams in Div,s 4/7 of the Mansfield League.

Kiveton Park FC is continuing to go from strength to strength. Now the club has teams at all ages from 5-14 as well as a Mens Saturday team. The junior ages have enjoyed a very successful season with good progress in every team. The stand out performers have been the U11’s who have rounded off a league winning season with cup final success. Manager, Paul Brookes and Assistant Sam Jarvis have overseen a major transformation from a team that was struggling in its younger years. Many will point to the clubs new approach to how it is run as a reason for a good season. The club have placed greater emphasis on standards of coaching and looked to improve the all round experience the players receive while at the club. The coaches attend regular training days to help ensure kids are getting good coaching. The club host Soccer camps every school holidays that are well attended by children within the community. CHAIRMAN’S NOTE It’s all over for another five years – the election campaign was five weeks but to me it seemed like 50. Perhaps we can go back to having proper news on the wireless and television now.

Let’s thank our luck that we are not Americans – they have already started their campaigning and its eighteen months away in November 2016, they also have mid-term elections.

Locally the parish produced a 60.80% turnout but there were 182 spoilt papers with comments like, “I don’t know who these people are!” it has been suggested that we put photographs next to our contact details in the Community Matters magazine. This means that those of you with a coal fire could put the page on the mantelpiece to keep the children or grandchildren away from the fire.

Have a great summer and use the recreation grounds at Wales Bar, Stoney Bank and Kiveton and the equipment available – that’s what we as councillors are most pleased to see.

BLOOMIN’ LOVERLY! The crocus bulbs planted along the grass verges on Wales Road have received many plaudits, with comments such as, “They really brighten the village up” and “They make it an environment that you can be proud of”. Take a bow Steve Chambers, Tony Fowkes, Russell King and Glen Westwood of our Green Spaces Team and also of course Paul Deakin of Streetpride. They all work really hard to keep Kiveton and Wales looking clean and tidy and a pleasant place to live.

But it can be spoilt for the many by a few selfish people.

Who dumped all the tyres in Delves Lane and continues to dump rubbish there?

Who drops litter or throws it out of their car windows?

Who allows their dogs to defecate on our pavements and open spaces and can’t be bothered to pick it up?

Who is dumping rubbish at the rear of the houses on Station Road and by the snicket leading to Stoney Bank Drive?

These people are not only breaking the law, they are spoiling our village and it’s time we put a stop to it. If we all keep our eyes peeled and are willing to make a stand against such anti-social, obnoxious behaviour, together we can make a difference. NEW PARISH ROOMS

We are pleased to report that planning permission has been granted conditionally for the new building. The four local schools and the Kiveton Youth and Community Centre have been invited to submit designs based on three themes for the brickwork below the eaves and round the door frame to the side entrance, glazing stickers for the large glass areas and a new sign. The three themes are: (i) Wales Parish Council and the community; (ii) Kiveton Park & Wales past and present; and (iii) the school and the community. The designs will be judged in September by two councillors, a teacher from each of the schools and Howard Buckley, the senior architect from Rotherham Borough Council.

In making the decision to look at having a new building and move out of the village hall we considered a number of factors, including the need for more space and storage facilities, the requirement for new toilet facilities for the Recreation Ground, including toilets for disabled visitors, and the need to ensure the privacy of the clerk’s office so that confidential information is not disclosed and residents are assured that their affairs are treated in confidence. We have a target gross maximum price for the building of £145,000 but anticipate it costing less than this.

The proposed new building will be built of brick with a pitched roof, and will use the same materials where possible that were used to construct the village hall, in order to create a recognisable “community hub” for Wales. Being a relatively long building the main entrance will be at the side giving access to a small lobby from which visitors will be able to access the various rooms and toilets in the building. The internal layout will comprise of a lobby/display area, meeting room, store, communal kitchen, clerk’s office and toilets.

The meeting room will be a multi-use area with spacious windows and doors that will open on to the car park enabling the space to work in tandem with the external car park for markets and the like. Internally the kitchen will be to the rear of the building but will have a serving hatch into the meeting room. The clerk’s office will also be at the rear overlooking the tennis courts and there will be a rear entrance enabling access from the bowling green to the toilets in the building.

The meeting room will be bigger and we shall endeavour to have it utilised between council meetings. We shall be looking at revamping the outdoor market and car boot days on the Recreation Ground car park and using the meeting room for an indoor market in inclement weather and during the winter. No doubt there are lots of other uses to which it could be put and we would welcome your suggestions.

There will be an exhibition in the village hall, which will be publicised shortly,with a 3D computer model of the new building and other exhibits to give a flavour of the design. Given that the new building will last a considerable period of time if properly maintained and be the seat of local democracy in the parish, we hope that you can find the time to visit it and let us have your views. EASTER EGGCITEMENT A great time was had by all the children from St John’s Playgroup at their annual Easter Bonnet Parade. The children entertained Cllr Peter Blanksby and Cllr Sue Halfpenny with some “action” songs before putting on their Easter bonnets and parading round for them to choose the winner. The councillors called upon to be judges invariably find it really difficult to decide, as the hats are all extremely good and you cannot but appreciate the effort that has gone in to making them.

Madeleine Barton was chosen as the winner on Wednesday and Oliver Oldroyd was Thursday’s winner. Madeleine and Oliver’s prize was a lovely chocolate bunny each but all of the children went home with an Easter egg. We hope to include a photograph in the next edition.

GYM EQUIPMENT The new outdoor gym equipment at the Recreation Ground is proving very popular to all ages and sizes. The accompanying photographs illustrate the point. We tried to get Cllrs Fowkes and Carswell to show us some moves like the youngsters but they insisted on prolonged “gentle exercise” before attempting such manoeuvres. Never mind, we can wait…

MAYOR’S CHARITY Every year the Mayor of Rotherham has a charity raffle and Easter egg extravaganza. The money raised goes to good causes close to the Mayor’s heart. We usually make a grant of £25 to the Mayor’s charities. The charities that the current Mayor, Cllr John Foden, is championing are: The Rotherham Military Community Veterans’ Centre and Rush House.

The Rotherham Military Community Veterans Centre is a young and expanding organisation whose aim is to provide support to the ex-service community within Rotherham. The Centre’s aims are: to provide comradeship in the form of weekly meetings at Voluntary Action Rotherham each Friday; to act as a signposting service to experts for those in need; and to provide an outreach service using a specifically designed trailer that travels around Rotherham on a weekly basis. The centre also hopes to establish a befriending service in the near future as funds become available.

Rush House was established in 1981 for the purpose of providing a range of accommodation and support services, including advice and independent living skills training, to young people aged 16-25 in the Rotherham area. It caters for young people who are homeless, inappropriately housed or at risk in their current home. Rush House also provides support services and fully-furnished accommodation in four separate but integrated schemes, through a single point of referral, each offering different levels of independence.

Every young person is allocated their own key worker who works with them to set targets and help achieve their goals. A personal development team provides support with training education or employment, information, advice and guidance, group work and support with life skills, numeracy or literacy. Weekly healthy lifestyles sessions cover a variety of topics including fitness, healthy eating, sexual exploitation and staying safe, sexual health and substance misuse.

All young people who stay at Rush House are expected to make a positive contribution to society and to work with its personal development team.

CLIC SARGENT AND PACT In April we made a grant of £50 each to two charities that are dedicated to supporting children with cancer and their families. Ten children and young people are told each day that they have cancer.

CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. The charity was formed in 2005 and provides clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to children, young people and their families to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life. Clic Sargent’s staff are there to provide support from diagnosis onwards and aim to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement. Being diagnosed with cancer is a frightening experience and the emotional, practical and financial implications of treatment are intensely challenging for the whole family.

Parents And Children Together – PACT – has been building and strengthening families since 1911. It is one of the UK’s leading voluntary adoption agencies, placing children with secure and loving families and supporting them with specialist therapeutic support.

WATCH OUT, BURGLARS ABOUT! The police have told us that a gang of thieves from Sheffield is operating in the area and are targeting uPVC doors with the euro profile cylinder lock. The lock cylinder of early versions of this lock is easy to snap allowing easy access to the property.

You can’t tell from looking at the lock but if it has been in the door for 10 – 15 years or more it is likely to be the early version so get it checked out.

Lock snapping involves snapping the lock cylinder in two, by applying force, and removing the outside part to expose the lock mechanism, allowing the door to be unlocked.

The gang has gained entry to a number of properties in the village that had been secured with this lock using this technique.

The police recommend that all vulnerable doors using europrofile cylinders are upgraded to incorporate 'Break Secure' cylinders, which are found in TS007 3 star rated cylinder locks.

Look for the Sold Secure Diamond Grade logo, the Secure by Design logo and the British Kitemark logo. These locks are easy to remove and replace requiring no special tools or skill and will repay the outlay (around £40) with peace of mind.

Don’t forget if you see someone acting suspiciously contact your local Neighbourhood Watch warden, dial 101 or ring 999.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Family Fun Day We mentioned in the last edition having an inter-school family fun day on the Recreation Ground at the end of the summer term. The event has been set for Wednesday 24 June.

Hopefully the weather will be fine but if not we shall look to holding the event in the main hall of the village hall. We are looking to arrange for light refreshments for those who want them. It should be a great day. See you there!

Mega-Active Summer Camps This year’s summer camps are: Monday 3 August – Thursday 6 August and Monday 10 August – Thursday 13 August. The boys and girls at last year’s camp had a great time and we are looking forward to seeing them again this year. The charge per child for each morning or afternoon session will again be £1.00 (£2.00 for the day). Let the clerk know if there is anything you would like to see as part of the camps. Steam Rally The weekend of the steam rally is Saturday and Sunday 26 and 27 September. We are currently working on the programme and are confident that it will be a great event. We are aiming to have this as an annual fixture and look forward to seeing you all there.

CUP WINNERS AGAIN! Wales High School’s year 8 football team have just topped off another excellent season with a comprehensive win in the Rotherham Schools Cup final. The win saw the team retain the title they won last year.

The opposition in this year’s final came from a strong and formidable Dinnington High School team. But under the leadership of Captain Regan Millard, Wales controlled the majority of the first half and snuffed out any bad intentions the Dinnington lads had on the Wales’ goal. The lads worked hard as a team, a veritable microcosm of the school, and that inevitably lead to a wonderful goal from Sam Eccles, who hit the ball like a rocket into the Dinnington goal before the end of the first half.

We can only surmise but we think the lads from Dinnington must have had the equivalent of the Alex Ferguson hair dryer treatment in the dressing room because they came out fighting at the start of the second half and put some serious pressure on the Wales’ defence. At times it must have felt like the Rumble in the Jungle, where Muhammad Ali fought eight skilful defensive rounds to vanquish the fearsome George Foreman. The outcome on the pitch was much the same – once the Dinnington lads had grown weary and disillusioned from their futile efforts, the Wales lads shifted seamlessly from defence to attack. Administering the coup de grace naturally fell to Sam Eccles who put a further three goals into the back of the Dinnington net before the final whistle leaving the final score at 4.0. Just like the Rumble in the Jungle, the score sheet did not reflect the intensity of the battle. What a fantastic game of football, played by an outstanding group of students!

MEDAL WINNERS Not to be outdone by the boys, Wales High School Year 7 netball team had a highly successful season and fought their way through to the Rotherham Schools finals day.

After winning all four of their games they went on to beat Swinton 4-3 in a closely fought semi-final. The final then saw them take on Wath and at half-time the score was tied at 9-9. Despite battling hard, the girls narrowly missed out, losing 13-9. Nevertheless, having given their all, the team members were very happy with their runners-up medals and are already aiming to go one step better next season. Go for it and good luck, girls!

As the year speeds on towards Summer, we have had an interesting variety of speakers.

In March, we had Keep Fit using easy exercise, which has resulted in many members joining Carole’s classes at The Village Hall on Tuesday lunchtimes.. In April we had CAP - Christians Against Poverty, an organisation based in Swallownest, that help and support those with financial difficulties with free debt advice. At our last meeting in May the speakers were the Rotherham Street Pastors, volunteers who help revellers on the streets of Rotherham. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month, at 7.30pm, please come along for a chat, a listen to what we do and most of all Friendship. We try and arrange talks and meetings that are relevant to members. A reminder, St Johns Church has a food donation basket for New Hope Food Bank. They need on-going support to help members of our community who find themselves in great need.

Kiveton Park & Wales The 11thRotherham Scout group has been enjoying a wide range of activities over the past few months. The scouts (10.5 – 14 yrs) have been, shelter building, archery and a number of them recently took part in a backwoods skills training day. In July they are looking forward to joining other scouts from across the district in paint balling. Ouch!

The cub scouts (8-10.5yrs) have completed their athletics badge, their astronomy badge and their artist badge and enjoyed a hike along the Chesterfield canal. The older Cubs enjoyed an overnight training camp at North Anston, cooking on wood fires and experiencing the culinary delights of nettles! 20 of the Cubs enjoyed a sleep over at the National Emergency Services museum in Sheffield and learnt a lot about fire and personal safety. The Beaver Scouts (6-8yrs) made a lovely Maypole for the Wales Methodist Players May Queen celebration event – did you see it? They have also learnt about tracking and enjoyed a mini hike. An enjoyable evening was held at the Co-op when the Manager talked to them about the food chain and origins.

Most of the group took part in the St Georges Day parade in Rotherham along with 250 other scouting members from the Rotherham District.

Rev Gary Schofield led the service and our scout band did us proud along with the Sheffield Boy’s Brigade band.

Congratulations to the following people who have recently achieved their Chief Scouts Awards – the highest award in their section.Beavers – Bronze Award - Oliver Parker, Liam McCoy, David Andrew. Cubs – Silver Award -Alex Cocking, Joshua Lee, Cameron Rhodes, Robert Farrugia.

Scouts – Gold Award -Katie Lawrenson…and many Congratulations too to Steve Rhodes (Cub Scout Leader) who has recently been invested in to the group following a period of training. Welcome to the 11th Scout Group, Steve – we hope you enjoy many happy years in Scouting!

The canoe club has started back up for the summer months and we have enjoyed many nights canoeing and kayaking on the Chesterfield canal and at Rother Valley.

At the end of April the group and family members got together for a Beetle Drive which was great fun – an old family favourite, which was new to many parents!

In June we are looking forward to our family camp at Walesby where we get together with families and friends of Guiding and St John’s Church and enjoy lots of on site activities such as archery, climbing, body boarding and rifle shooting along with volleyball, rounders and lots of socializing too. At the end of June the group are going to Squirrel Wood campsite, near Doncaster when some of the Beavers will be camping for the first time.

July 25th – 29th is our Summer Camp, available to all scouting members 10 and over. We will be camping on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District. Enjoying the Outdoors will be the theme and we are really looking forward to a great camp, hiking, canoeing, exploring and gorge walking.

The local Explorer Scout unit (14-18yrs) meet on a Wednesday night. In recent weeks they have been mountain biking, hiking, canoeing and are looking forward to stream scrambling and windsurfing plus lots of other activities too. Expedition weekends have been taking place too for the DofE and Chief Scouts Awards. In July some of the Explorers are off to a 24 hour non stop event at Gilwell park, while others have a camp planned at a local site. Lots happening! WALES CHILD CARE PARTNERSHIP Summertime is approaching and, as ever, the children are in the swing with seasonal activities. Planting in the garden has begun with onions, strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes, runner beans, sweet peas, radishes, beetroot, flowers and more starting to burst into life! We have also built our very own ‘BUG HOTEL’. If you have not already seen it then please do check it out. It is definitely ‘The Ritz’ for bugs! The children have shown a great interest in the hotel which has led to ‘minibeast and bug hunting’, exploring their environment and the woods with their own checklists of things to discover, creating lots of conversations surrounding their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Not surprisingly for such a 5-star establishment we have already had quite a few bugs check in since it opened prompting lots of conversations throughout nursery as to who may be next to arrive! The children are provided with ‘free-flow’ play throughout each and every day, meaning that everyone gets plenty of fresh air and exercise building upon their physical skills and much more.

Giant Colour Rush obstacle course coming to Rother Valley park The event later this year organized by MyNextRun, is a combination of coloured powder runs and giant obstacles as seen on Television in shows such as Wipeout and Ninja Warriors. The organisers said: “There will be a pre-workout to start with just to ensure everyone is warmed up. Then the start is a push through foam and at the same time getting doused with colour powder before climbing up and down nets, making your way down giant slides, leaping through bouncy castles, crawling under inflatable beams, digging through a giant ball pit, and finally a huge party at the finish line as a reward for completing the Colour Rush.

The five kilometer course is a combination of 10 obstacles and nine colouring stations, so get set to be seriously coloured by the end. The event takes place on Saturday, September 12, from 9.30am until 12.45pm. For more details on how to enter visit www.colorobstaclerush.com

CHESTERFIELD CANAL TRUST NEWS. New Dawn, the Cuckoo boat that our volunteers have been building for 4 years at Shireoaks Marina, was launched at the end of April. It looks magnificent. It will be named officially at the Canal & River Trust event at the Lock Keeper pub in Worksop on Saturday, 6th June. We hope that it will be horse drawn, but this has not yet been confirmed. Our trip boat, Hugh Henshall, has had a successful start to its trips every Sunday from the Lock Keeper in Worksop. They cost £5, or £4.50 for concessions. No booking - just turn up. The pub offers 20% off food for anyone taking a trip. We will also be running the following trips: Cake and Cruise trips from Shireoaks through three locks each way (1½ hrs, £10) on 23rd May and 29th August. Booking essential.

Dear Friends That was a quote which a friend of mine shared on Facebook. Some of you will know that I was recently walking through the picturesque Falling Foss in the Yorkshire Dales. I was photographing a bridge at the side of a stream at the bottom of a woodland valley. I slipped, went up into the air, and landed back first on a rock with great force.

Thankfully a Good Samaritan was nearby and telephoned for an ambulance. The Scarborough and Ryedale mountain rescue team were quickly on the scene. I was carefully laid on a board, they placed a head and neck brace on and lifted me up extremely carefully. The rescue team, knelt on the rocks and in the stream because they also didn’t want to fall, and passed me from one to the other up the bank and to safety. Whilst in Scarborough Hospital after my Ascension Day accident I reflected on my experience and how God lifts us, how were are lifted by others and how we can lift those who are in need.

When was there a time in your life when you were knocked off your feet, flat out and at your lowest. When you were unable to move and help yourself. When you were completely reliant on an outstretched arm of love. Who was your Good Samaritan? A person who took time to stop and be with you when you needed someone. Who carried you when you felt unable to walk. Who raised you up when you were at your lowest? Maybe a stranger, relative, a friend or even God? Alternatively, when have you stood over someone who was brought low by events or illness or both. When did you stay with someone in their darkest hour or deepest need. When did you stretch out an arm of friendship and love to pick them up in a compassionate and gentle act of mercy. Who was it you helped and what was your motivation for doing so. Love of neighbour, love of God or just love of your ego?

Jesus Christ, through his crucifixion, resurrection and ascension stretches out arms of love to each and everyone of us. He saves us from our sins, picks us up from our lowly ashamed state and, at the last, brings us safely home to rest eternally with him in his glory.

Just for the record I was taken slowly by road to Scarborough General Hospital. A CT scan revealed I have two fractures of the vertebrae. Since that day I have been singing the praises of the services who came to my aid. From the air and land ambulance crews to the mountain rescue team and not forgetting the hospital staff. I just want to let everyone know how thankful I was for their efficient teamwork, compassion and care whilst lifting me up.

Thank you on my Re-election I would just like to take this opportunity to say how honoured I am to be able to continue to serve and stand up for the local community after my successful re-election in the local elections held at the beginning of May. I will continue to do my best by residents and the local area amid what will be difficult and challenging times for local services in the next few years. I will be continuing to represent the community on the Wales High School Governing Body, the Kiveton & Wales Community Development Trust Board and I will always remain accessible by holding regular advice surgeries. One of my most recent activities was supporting the VE Day commemorations at the Kiveton & Wales Village Hall on 16th May along with my colleagues Gordon Watson and Jenny Whysall. I think it is important that we never forget those who gave of their lives then,for our democracy and freedom today.

Blessed William Richardson Catholic Church Station Rd, Kiveton Park Blessed William Richardson ( 1572 -1603) Was a sixteenth – Century Roman Catholic English martyr.

Richardson was born in the village of Wales, South Yorkshire. He studied for the Roman Catholic priesthood at seminaries in Valladolid and Seville, both in Spain. He was ordained sometime between 1594 and 1600. William was then sent back to England, where he used the alias William Anderson. Soon after arriving in England, he was betrayed by a trusted person, arrested in London’s Gray’s Inn ( an inn of court ), and imprisoned. He was tried and convicted within a week and hanged, drawn and quartered. His was the final martyrdom to take place during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I as she was to die herself within a month.

His feast day is celebrated on 7 February.

KIVETON PARK & WALES HISTORY SOCIETY After months of preparation, Saturday 16th May saw the society commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day in the Village Hall. Here are a few photographs from the exhibition and the evening dance of this memorable and enjoyable event. Would you like to help establish a Community Memory Café in our area?

As many readers will know the Rotherham Alzheimer’s Society operates a number of successful Memory Cafes across the Borough. They provide a popular form of informal encouragement, stimulation and support for both those with Dementia and those who care for them. They also act as a focal point for effective signposting and advice. Another result has been the growth of spin off groups set up by attendees themselves such as a holiday group and snooker group. In short they have a great track record of helping people with Dementia and their Carers to avoid social isolation and to stay living independently in their own community.

Currently there are no Memory Cafes in the south of the Borough – inevitably resources are always limited - so Rotherham Rotary Club is currently examining the possibility of helping to establish a new Community Memory Café in our area. That would be alongside the Alzheimer’s Society. I have been asked to find out if local groups or other organisations might also be interested in getting involved and Community Matters has kindly agreed to assist me in this search. So if your group or other organisation is potentially interested please can you contact me - preferably by Friday 10th July if at all possible.
