A Delightful Surprise In response to a request from Nettleham Parish Council, I went along to the Annual Parish Meeting held at Mulsanne Park on Thursday 23 April in order to take a photograph of the 2015 presentation of the annual Ray Sellars Community Award.

Sitting there ready with my camera in the seats provided for members of the general public, I looked around the people present and wondered who was going to be the recipient of this prestigious award.

Then at 7.30pm, Terry Williams, Chairman of the Parish Council, duly announced the winner and to my complete and utter astonishment my name was spoken!

I was completely overwhelmed by the kind and complimentary words said about my long association with Nettleham News and other village projects in which I have been involved over the years.

I am simply delighted to be presented with this award, which is accepted not just by me personally, but on behalf of the entire Nettleham News team, which of course includes all those who assist so willingly and gladly behind the scenes in its administration and distribution.

The smaller replica award trophy will take pride of place on the mantelpiece and I would like sincerely to thank those who nominated and voted for me to receive the award from the nominations which were received this year.

There is a photograph of the presentation on page 13 and I trust that my shock and surprise at finding myself on the other side of the camera lens is not too apparent!

Once again many thanks for bestowing this honour, which is deeply appreciated.

The front Cover The front cover photograph features Bishop’s Meadow in all its glory in summer last year. It will be interesting to see if the truly awesome display of 2014 will be repeated this year.

In theory, the nutrient levels in the soil, which resulted in such prolific growth last year, will now have been significantly reduced by the rampant growth and whilst there should still be a multitude of wild flowers from last year’s naturally dispersed seeds, it is anticipated that top growth will progressively diminish over subsequent years as the natural minerals and nutrients contained in the soil become depleted.

Where the spent top growth has up to now been mowed and removed, this may eventually be left to naturally decompose and return the organic nutrients to the soil, thus maintaining a natural balance.

Nettleham Gardeners’ Annual Show In order to keep this traditional village event alive and well, it is vital that as many exhibits as possible are entered in the show. There is a wide variety of different classes in which to enter, including fruit, vegetables, art, crafts, baking, flower arranging, wine-making and special classes for children too.

The show schedule appears on pages 48/49 of this edition, so decide which classes you would like to enter this year and then get growing (or baking or sewing or painting or embriodering or wine-making, etc, etc).

Come on - have a go this year, it’s fun and it keeps this popular annual village event thriving.

Photographic Competition

Past Editions A reader has asked me if I know of anyone who has a full set of Nettleham News magazines, from the first edition published in spring 1983.

I would remind readers that the closing date for the photographic competition featuring the Bishop’s Palace site is 1 October 2015.

If you, or someone you know in the village can help, do please let me know and I will arrange for someone to come and collect them. Thank you.

Since the first announcement of the competition on page 35 of the autumn 2014 edition of Nettleham News, I’m sure keen photographers by now will have acquired the autumn, winter and spring photographs, so now all you need is the summer one to complete your set of four images, representing the four seasons at this delightful village amenity.

Further news about the judging will appear in the autumn edition of the magazine and it is anticipated that the final results and winning entry, together with a selection of other entries, will be published in the winter/Christmas edition of Nettleham News at the end of the year.

The active and popular RB Camera Club in Nettleham should ensure some stunning images (see pages 32/33).

And finally...

My sincere thanks to all the regular contributors of items for publication they are greatly appreciated by everyone.

If you have never sent anything for publication, make 2015 the year you do!

If you decide to send something, instead of creating the text using separate software, simply key the text into the body of the email and send. This eliminates the need for a separate document attachment and also makes it much easier and quicker for me to transfer to the magazine.

Photographs to accompany the text should preferably be sent as separate .jpg attachments (and don’t forget to also include caption wording, to clearly identify what, who, where and when).

Parish Council News Welcome to the latest update on Parish Council business Parish Council At the time of going to press, we await the results of the first contested Parish Council election in many years. With the exception of Mr Alf Frith, all existing Parish Councillors have put themselves forward for re-election and there are 14 candidates standing to fill 12 places, so we await the outcome with interest.

We would like to express our deep appreciation to Alf Frith who has stood down from the Council after an extraordinary 50 years! This is a considerable achievement and represents an enormous contribution to our community - what changes he will have seen in the village over that time!

Extraordinary Parish Council Meeting: 2 June 2015 An Extraordinary Parish Council meeting has been organised for Tuesday 2 June 2015 in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. The meeting will discuss a Planning Application for up to 200 dwellings on land off Larch Avenue, Nettleham. All residents are welcome to attend.

Annual Report The Chairman’s Annual Report was presented at the Annual Parish Meeting on 23 April and appears on pages 68-71.

Ray Sellars Community Award At the Annual Parish Meeting in April, the Parish Council was delighted to announce Nigel Kingston as the worthy winner of the Ray Sellars Community Award. This was in recognition for his significant contribution to the village, over many years, in producing our superb Nettleham News magazine and also for much other work he has undertaken on our behalf, such as the excellent information panels at Bishop’s Palace. Members of Ray’s family were pleased to present the award to a stunned Nigel and a picture of the occasion appears on page 7.

There are a number of commemorative benches around the village and in order to keep our records up to date we would be grateful if the family or friends who dealt with the commemorative bench would let the Parish Office have their contact details, so that if necessary we can contact them regarding anything affecting the bench.

Parish Office Relocation The lease for the Police Office has now been signed and quotations, etc, are currently being obtained for the necessary works. It is anticipated that the Parish Office will move into the old Police Office in July/August.

Parish Council Change of Website and Email Address

Parish Office Open Monday - Thursday 9.00am - 11.00am Curfews May we politely remind residents that dusk to dawn curfews are in place for Mulsanne Park, Bill Bailey’s Playing Field, Cemetery and Bishop’s Palace. These curfews are necessary in order to try and prevent anti-social behaviour occurring at the sites. This does not apply to Mulsanne Park if official sporting activities are taking place.

Mini-Skate Park This additional sporting facility for village youngsters has now been completed and a separate article and photographs appears on page 56.

Letters from Readers Traffic & Parking in the Village Via email 1 March 2015

Advertising Works in Nettleham News

Reading other residents’ comments about traffic and parking in the village prompts me to write in agreement and comment further on a related aspect regarding the disruption drivers can unwittingly cause.

Perhaps drawing attention to this behaviour in Nettleham News may bring about awareness and improvement of the situation.

I refer to the sizeable minority of drivers who park their vehicles and then leave their engines running for several minutes whilst their passengers, or in some cases they themselves, go shopping, eat their lunch or simply wait for their children to leave school.

This causes unnecessary environmental pollution in the village, whilst the noise in our case at least, is also disruptive.

There is an increasing realisation that modern diesel engines in particular, as fitted to the majority of cars, pose real health risks, with many councils now taking measures to minimise the danger for residents and pedestrians supported by Road Traffic law.

Leaving a vehicle engine idling for more than two minutes is actually a Road Traffic offence, so the appropriate authorities do have the powers to deal with these matters if they choose to do so.

With the Co-op now open until 10.00pm the problem is getting worse, especially as the large Co-op car park is not fully used by customers.

Perhaps Nettleham News could help by publicising the legal requirement for drivers and, perhaps more importantly, how fuel inefficient and unnecessary it is to leave a modern car engine idling irrespective of the danger, discomfort and disruption to others which this can cause.

I suspect engines left running whilst the vehicle is stationary for a long period of time is to either keep the heater going in cold weather, or to keep the air conditioning going in hot weather. ‘Log-Dog” Stolen!

It was with great dismay and not a little anger that I returned home from shopping at 8.15am on Saturday 21 March to find that the ‘Log-Dog’ which I had only recently purchased and placed outside my front door had been stolen!

I had only been gone a few minutes, but in that time someone had sneaked off with it.

I bought a number of these items, some for friends and one for myself. Rob T, who makes these attractive and decorative wooden dogs, sells them to raise funds for local charities and I endeavour to support his efforts.

It’s a crying shame!

The War Memorial Via email 14 February 2015 Further to the Editor’s recent comments about the village war memorial, how many of us pass it each day without giving it a second thought?

A public meeting on the evening of Thursday 20 February 1919, decided to erect a monument on the village green and elected a memorial committee accordingly.

A design for an eleven-foot obelisk, surmounted by a small cross made from Hoptonwood stone was chosen and Mr Arthur Howson of Tentercroft Street, Lincoln, was duly appointed to carry out the work.

The unveiling ceremony took place on the afternoon of Saturday 10 April 1920 following a specially-arranged service in All Saints parish church conducted by Rev Charles King Watkins MA. At 3.00pm the congregation gathered on The Green, where the proceedings opened with a hymn: All People that on Earth Do Dwell accompanied by an organist playing from the top of a farm wagon. After the prayers, Col Joseph Ruston JP gave a short address followed by Cllr John Clarke Chairman of Nettleham Parish Council and Mr H A Mansford representing the free churches.

O God Our Help in Ages Past was sung before Mr Charles Wilson of Riseholme Hall pulled the cord to unveil the memorial and acknowledged that of the 124 men of Nettleham who had enlisted, 30 had not returned. Parishioners were thanked for their contributions towards the memorial and the National Anthem and Last Post were finally played by Drummer Hayes of ‘A’ Company Lincolnshire Regiment.

From ‘Down Under’ As Wimbledon approaches, I thought I would write and let you know about a Nettleham girl’s connection to an Australian tennis legend.

I work as a volunteer at The Australian Tennis Museum at Olympic Park, Sydney.

Ken Rosewall is our patron and is a regular visitor when The Sydney International takes place each January.

Every May we organise a fund-raising luncheon and Ken brings along a special guest to talk. In the past few years we have had Pat Rafter, Margaret Court, Evonne Cawley, Tony Roche and Todd Woodbridge. Being a volunteer has given me opportunities to meet and chat with tennis greats, both past and present.

Ken Rosewall recently turned 80 and although he appeared in four finals, he never won a Wimbledon singles title.

A Pleasant Surprise for All

My Sincere Thanks Dear Residents,

She had three sons, one of whom, Lloyd, was her carer for several years. During the weeks after the funeral, I received a call from Mr Ronald Edwards telling me that Lloyd had shown him a banner he had designed and made, the theme of which is Jesus: Son of God.

I am writing this letter before 1 May, to catch the Nettleham News deadline, and before voting took place on 7 May when you may have noticed my name was not included on the ballot paper for the District Council election for the first time in many years.

Lloyd showed the banner to me and I took it to church. The Rector, Father Richard Crossland, suggested we should display it at the 9.30am Sung Eucharist on the Feast of Christ the King, on Sunday 23 November 2014, which was attended by Lloyd and Ronald.

Everyone liked the banner and it has remained in All Saints church since then. Coincidentally, it was Lloyd’s last day living in Nettleham before he moved to Branston. The church was well attended as usual, and it was a festive, happy occasion.

As a result, through the generosity of those people from the Nettleham community who bought the products, a total of £945.00 was raised for the hospice. Since then under a similar fundraising plan, an additional £500 has been raised, which will be divided equally between Cancer Research UK (CRUK), St Barnabas and the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (L&NAA).

Accordingly, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all those who kindly gave their support. Special thanks also, to Bill and Maureen Ball of the Corner House, who volunteered to help co-ordinate the sales process.

I was first elected nearly 34 years ago, at a by-election on the 9 July 1981, to represent you as one of Nettleham’s District Councillors on West Lindsey District Council.

You have continued to elect me to represent you on 8 out of the 9 elections since then, twice without any opposition, and I must thank you for your continuing confidence in me for that privilege.

May I also thank the team of workers who have helped distribute my leaflets, not only at election time, but also my reports back to our community during my terms of office.

Among my many duties I was elected to Chair the District Council in 1991/92 and also chaired the Planning Committee for 6 of my many years on it.

Recently I have represented WLDC on the Lincolnshire Health Scrutiny Committee, the 3rd Witham Drainage Board and been the representative of all the Lincolnshire Districts on the Lincolnshire County Council Pension Fund committee (looking after approximately £1.5 billion on behalf of pensioners both past and future).

It has increasingly become hard work to drive to Gainsborough for most meetings, particularly in the winter months, and I have decided this year not to stand for possible re-election to the District Council but, if you are willing, to continue as a Nettleham Parish Councillor. I joined the Parish Council in 1966.

Thank you for allowing me to represent you and be involved in the decision-making at West Lindsey District Council on your behalf for 29 of the past 34 years.

From Your County Councillor There is no doubt in my mind that the work done on the Neighbourhood Plan in Nettleham is of a standard that will be difficult to match anywhere in the country. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but it is a stunningly good piece of work and will help to protect the village and residents from inappropriate development for years to come. It doesn’t aim to stop development, but its careful consideration of village life means that progress and change should now be managed in a suitable manner. Those Parish Councillors and residents who gave up countless hours of their free time to undertake this work should be recognised as the unselfish and generous-hearted people they are. If you are aware of the problems being experienced by other Lincolnshire villages, you will know just how lucky we are to have people with both the ability and willingness to do this work.

The state of the roads in Nettleham is something which bothers me enormously and Cllr Richard Davies, the Executive Councillor in charge of Highways for the County, feels the

same way. I recently drove him around the village and pointed out the ridiculously bad state of the road at the bottom of Deepdale Lane, as well as elsewhere. You will know that, some time ago, Highways agreed to do an emergency repair on Washdyke Lane and, to my delight, they did a very good job which seems to be holding up. We need the same quality of work on Deepdale Lane and Cllr Davies is very unhappy about the fact that the surface of the road is now very deeply rutted. I haven’t yet got any dates from him but he did make calls in my hearing to ask for assessments. Cllr Davies is one of those people who is willing to ‘tell it as it is’ and he doesn’t make empty promises. He’s warned me that the County is only able to spend about forty-five million pounds on roads when it needs to spend nearer sixty million every year, which means that some things won’t get done. Alright, I can understand that, but we must still fight our corner and Cllr Davies has agreed that we should report every rut and every pothole, so that at least some of the work can be done.

One of the main functions of committees at the County Council is to scrutinize decisions and to challenge plans before they’re put into

action. For more than a year I’ve been complaining that some councillors take their places on the committees and then say absolutely nothing during their meetings.

What use is that to us? Scrutiny is vitally important and we should be prepared to rip into any and all proposals affecting our residents, so that we can obtain the best outcomes. Another councillor and I recently took the very serious step of voting against part of the council’s budget in a scrutiny committee, because we were far from satisfied that the proposals being made were robust. That action caused interest because the two of us are Conservatives and we voted against a Conservative proposal. Now, you could argue for party loyalty, which I can understand, but surely the first loyalty should be to one’s residents? Anyway, I’m pleased to report we were listened to very carefully and the assurances we requested were put in place before a decision was taken.

In fact, the whole of the council’s scrutiny function is now being examined carefully to improve the work that councillors do in this area and I’m to be closely involved in that in the coming months. I’m going to be working with councillors from all parties and that’s an exciting opportunity which I’m very much looking forward to.

The Nettleham Schnauzer Walk You may have noticed the large number of Miniature Schnauzers in the village (approximately 12 at the last count).

For the past three years I have organised for us all to get together for a walk in September. It is wonderful to see the same breed playing and interacting with each other, and for us owners to get to know each other as well!

The get-together is not limited exclusively to Schnauzers from Nettleham, so if you know of anyone out of the village who may be interested, please let them know.

In previous walks, the dogs have enjoyed exploring Monks Wood, Dunholme, and for a change this year, we have decided to change the venue to Whisby Nature Reserve. Everybody with a Schnauzer is very welcome to meet us outside the visitor centre at Whisby at 2.00pm on Sunday 13 September 2015.

Recruiting for Nettleham LIVES Dear Fellow Villagers, Sadly, our recruitment day in January failed to generate any new members, so we promised to try again in the warmer weather. We’ve decided to join forces with the Scouts for the ‘Breakfast on the Green’ event on Saturday 16 May, where we’ll be trying to speak to as many people as possible, all helped along with a hearty freshly-cooked meal.

Diane Evans and Marcus Jones ‘First Responders’

Why did you become involved in LIVES? For both Diane and Marcus it was a case of wanting to embrace village life and to contribute to the community. Also, Diane’s father had recently died and whilst the emergency services had talked Diane through the process of CPR, she wanted to develop these skills, so that if she were faced with a similar situation, she would have the confidence to take a more active role. Marcus went on to comment that they had known a few people in the immediate vicinity of their Lincoln home, but wanted to get to know the people of Nettleham and to make a contribution.

What previous training and experience did you have?

We didn’t have any previous training, but Brian Wallis was the Nettleham group trainer and helped to impart the necessary skills and to build our confidence before we went to LIVES Headquarters for the formal training. We completed the various elements and became LIVES Responders on 1 September 2009.

Historic Newspaper Cuttings of Nettleham The incised lettering on the small memorial gravestone to Thomas Gardiner, which is located beneath the huge Horse Chestnut tree in the graveyard of All Saints parish church is, like every other exterior stone, subject to erosion by the weather.

Over many years, this may eventually render the words on the stone illegible and to preserve them for future generations, it was considered necessary to re-cut the letters from time to time, in order to maintain their definition and legibility.

This photograph, in a newspaper cutting from 1961, shows this skilful task being carried out. Unfortunately, the newspaper (unknown) managed to get the date on the stone wrong in the caption to the photograph, which reads: ‘Monumental sculptor, Mr. John Ivory, of the Lindum Stone Company, busy re-cutting an inscription on the headstone of Lincoln Post Boy, Thomas Gardiner, who was murdered in 1782 by Isaac and Thomas Hallam. The stone, removed from Nettleham churchyard, was returned at the week-end’.

To gain a little experience, we decided to ‘shadow’ another responder and our first ‘call’ was to Beckside Newsagents, where a gentleman was dizzy and short of breath.

We sat him down, reassured him and waited with him until an ambulance came.

What was your first call-out like?

Diane and Marcus moved to the village in April 2009, after a fairly lengthy stint in the centre of Lincoln. They were soon recruited to the LIVES group. Even though they had not been June’s original ‘target’ they were happy to get involved, not long after they had finished their unpacking. Diane and Marcus both work full-time and are engineers by profession.

The first call was to a lady. Again, our role was mainly one of reassurance, making sure she was warm and not too distressed and waiting with her until the ambulance arrived. We’ve since been able to use our CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) skills a few times and used the defibrillator once. Whilst we mainly respond as a couple, we are equally as happy to cover duties on our own.

The Lazy Gardener ... in Pursuit of a Bargain I love a bargain, don’t you? I have rescued many a drooping plant from the reduced section at the garden centre. It is a joy to see it blossom into life again with only a drop of water and the right window sill.

That joy is multiplied by the fact I didn’t pay a fortune for them.

However, there was one exception: The Parsley Incident.

I rescued a few pots of the curly green herb from near death on the supermarket shelves. Total outlay: 50p; a decided bargain. I planted them, rather randomly, around in the garden. I expected them to flourish briefly, but to be finished off by the first frosts. The parsley had other ideas and promptly went feral.

The next spring there was no part of the garden that was parsley-free. Even the bog garden had its share. If the parsley could have evolved quickly enough into an aquatic form, I’ve no doubt it would have colonised even the very bottom of the garden pond! Its success had transformed it into that most despised of garden creatures. It had become a weed.

True, as weeds go, it’s not the worst kind.

A small, visiting child or pet who ate it would hardly suffer too badly from the upsurge of vitamins in their system, but really, there’s only so much parsley butter, parsley sauce and plain parsley you can consume. I still have an entire freezer drawer full of the stuff. However, it did give me a money-saving idea. If parsley could run wild in the rose beds, what other supermarket cast offs could be let loose in the garden?

The obvious answer lay in salad, or more precisely the over-priced bag of salad leaves that was turning rapidly to compost in the bottom of the fridge. Here surely was a money-saving opportunity, so I bought some of those trays of rooted leaf salad from the supermarket. I ate the salad and planted out the decapitated remains in the vegetable plot. Yes, it did grow and grow. It even survived a winter covered by a cloche. It provided three full harvests.

Best of all, it was well-behaved and didn’t run riot; a truly successful bargain.

Somehow that success was not enough for me - I’d become obsessed. How big a bargain could I grow? What was the most expensive supermarket item I could cultivate in my garden? I like Indian and Middle Eastern food. I had the answer: saffron, worth more than its weight in

gold. I calculated that in a square metre, at supermarket prices, I could grow £385.56 worth of the precious stuff in a single year.

Saffron spice comes from the flower of the little saffron crocus, native to Greece and Asia. However, they were grown in England in the Middle Ages. A run of good summers had convinced me that I could recreate the southerly conditions required to get the bulbs to flower really well.

A little research on the internet showed that saffron production was returning to Saffron Walden in Essex after a gap of 200 years. Best of all, they take about fifteen minutes to plant and pretty much look after themselves. That decided it.

I ordered some saffron bulbs from a farm in France. I recycled some old shelves into a raised bed to create the sharp drainage required. As advised, I put it in the sunniest and most sheltered part of the garden.

I knew I had succeeded in finding just the right spot, because the cat immediately took to sleeping on my newly planted bulbs. Then I waited.

I’m still waiting. The bulbs grew well and seemed just on the point of producing their first flowers last year when winter arrived. So now, as the days lengthen and temperatures rise, I’m hoping for a scorching summer. That way I can enjoy my garden and maybe even make my spicy fortune too.

Nettleham Age UK Tuesday Coffee Morning: 40th Anniversary Party On Tuesday 14 April 2015, a party to celebrate 40 years of the Nettleham Age UK Coffee Morning was held in the Old School.

Our regulars were joined by a few guests and a cake, made and decorated by a friend, Jackie Le Guyan was cut by the longest-serving helper, Joyce Chappell.

The regular Tuesday morning is supported by a loyal group and conversation covers many subjects. We hope this will continue for many more years to come.

Oak Apples Visitors to Bishop’s Meadow may perhaps be curious as to what the rather sinister-looking growths are on the Prince’s Oak.

They are known as Oak Apples, although in fact they are not fruits at all, but galls caused by the tiny grub of a small wasp Biorhiza pallida.

The life cycle of this insect is rather unusual in that the tiny adult wasps emerge from the galls in June/July, mate, then drop to the ground where the females inject the eggs into the roots of the oak.

Only wingless female wasps hatch the following spring and crawl up the the tree to find a new leaf or leaf-bud into which an egg is injected. The larva eating the leaf tissue causes a chemical reaction, which results in the leaf distorting and forming the gall, which protects the larva from most potential predators.

The larva eventually pupates and remains in the gall until it emerges as an adult the following year and the cycle begins again.

The galls do not do any long-term damage, eventually falling to the ground.

There is much folklore surrounding the contents of a gall - if a single larva is found on Michaelmas Day* then the year will be pleasant and unexceptional. If a spider is found, then it will be a bad year with crop shortages. If a wasp is found, it will be a moderate season. However, if nothing is found, serious disease will occur throughout the year! *The feast of St Michael the Archangel 29 September - generally regarded as the first day of autumn in England.

Magna Carta 800th Year Anniversary The 2015 General Election was one of the most unpredictable elections in British history, with the polls showing no clear favourite. This makes it quite appropriate that we celebrate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta; a document that helped lay the foundations for British, and world, democracy.

Issued in 1215 by King John of England to keep rebel barons at bay, Magna Carta has become the world’s best-known historical document.

It established that for the first time all people, including the King, were subject to the law and allowed all people the right to a fair trial.

Many of the clauses first issued have since been amended, or erased, as King John died in 1216; the core values remain key elements of British Democracy. Elements of Magna Carta have been transferred internationally.

The American Bill of Rights (1791), European Convention on Human Rights (1950) and Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) have all used Magna Carta as inspiration.

There are only four remaining copies of Magna Carta, and we are blessed to have one of them in Lincoln, and it’s quite right that we celebrate such an important document.

Celebrations have taken place throughout the year including the reopening of Lincoln Castle after renovations on 1 April, locally known as Lincoln Castle Revealed, and a ‘Magna Carta Conference’ at the University of Lincoln. A series of lectures have, and still are, taking place. Special guests, including Lord Williams of Oystermouth (Dr Rowan Williams, previous Archbishop of Canterbury) have spoken about different aspects of the Magna Carta and its importance. The renovation and reopening of the castle was the biggest aspect of Magna Carta celebrations. It has taken 10 years and £22 million in order to renovate Lincoln’s castle. The poor

quality of the stone in the walls meant specialists had to replace each stone, sourced from Lincolnshire, one by one.

This was the most expensive part of the renovation, but was crucial to the safety of Lincoln Castle. The walk around the castle walls has been extended and you can now do a full circuit instead of just a small section of the wall, and this offers more beautiful views of the city.

Renovating the prison has delivered a more realistic experience to tourists, including a 180˚ cinema of what life was like for inmates. During the renovations, 10 skeletons were discovered from the Saxon era. One of these was buried in a sarcophagus, together with a pair of leather boots, indicating they were someone of importance - efforts to identify the skeleton are still ongoing.

The centrepiece of the renovation was the building of the David P J Ross Vault, which houses Lincoln’s Magna Carta. David Ross generously donated £1.5 million towards the project. This vault contains a small cinema screen, which shows short films on the history and the international importance of Magna Carta. This vault isn’t just any vault, due to the fragility of the sheepskin document, the lighting and temperature of the vault has to be specially conditioned to preserve Magna Carta. To celebrate the actual anniversary on the 13 June there will be celebrations in the castle, including a performance from the dance group and Britain’s Got Talent winners ‘Diversity’ as well as a special VIP, who, at the time of writing, has not yet been announced.

Lincoln’s Magna Carta went on a World Tour, further displaying the international significance of the document. Between July and September 2014 it was displayed in Boston (USA) Museum of Fine Arts, where it stood beside a copy of America’s Declaration of Independence.

It then moved to Law Library of Congress in Washington DC between November 2014 and January 2015.

Not only did this celebrate the 800th anniversary, but also the 75th anniversary of Lincoln’s Magna Carta being stored in the library during World War Two, where it was kept until 1947.

After its American tour, it moved back to Britain and was placed at the British Library, where, for the very first time, all four surviving Magna Carta manuscripts were at the same place at a 3-day event on the 2 - 4 February.

Celebrating Magna Carta has also promoted Lincoln as a city and it is hoped that this will increase tourism, Lincoln’s second biggest industry there has already been a significant increase in visitors to the castle.

It is safe to say the 800th anniversary will be celebrated in a fitting way for such an internationally important and historic document and Lincoln is proud to be at the forefront of these celebrations. It is important we remember Magna Carta as a hugely significant part of not only British, but also world, history.

Letters from Readers Jean Clarke

Parish Council News

I’m sure there will still be people in Nettleham who remember Mum and Dad: Jean and Geoff Clarke, from the White Hart, Cricket Club, Gardening Club and of course Nettleham News.

The quarterly update on Parish Council business in each edition of Nettleham News is always very informative and well written, the spring edition being no exception.

Mum has recently moved to a residential home close to me, with beautiful views out over Dartmoor, which she loves looking at.

On this occasion, however, I was concerned to read about two issues of a financial nature, especially given my background as a retired public sector accountant.

Mum remembers her life in Nettleham very clearly, and still looks forward to receiving her Nettleham News every quarter. She enjoys reading it, with me alongside, giving us a happy time together.

For a 91-year-old she is doing pretty well, still enjoying trips out to places like Rosemoor Gardens and Castle Drogo, although she will now concede that if she accepts sitting in a wheelchair whilst we go around, she will see more of the gardens! Still, she can move remarkably briskly with her walking frame when she wants to!

So please keep Nettleham News coming to the new address, it is much appreciated.

Jennie Dunse (nee Clarke) Editor Readers will, I’m sure, be very pleased to learn that Jean continues to stay well and enjoy an active life in Devon.

It is also good to know that Jean still enjoys reading Nettleham News, with all its news and views about the village and this is made possible through the magazine’s postal subscription service, whereby those people who have left our community, for one reason or another, are still able to keep up with what’s happening back in their favourite Lincolnshire village.

Firstly: The “Parish Council Precept 2015/16”. We are all aware of the financial austerity measures adopted over the last 5 years, whereby County and District Councils have had their annual rates severely curtailed, indeed West Lindsey have levied a zero% increase in four of the last five years.

Furthermore, for Councils other than Parishes any proposed increase above 2% now requires a referendum.

Against this backdrop our Parish has agreed an increase of 3.6% and over the last five years has levied increases totalling 22.1%! Whilst in financial terms any Parish increase may not be that great, on a matter of principle I do not think it wise that our Parish Council should seemingly disregard what is happening elsewhere and levy increases beyond the limits imposed on other Councils.

Secondly: The “Parish Office Relocation”. Given the amount of property the Parish Council already owns, I felt that a different solution could be found to the problem stated and that it was not necessary to rent another property with additional costs, especially given my thoughts on the precept increase. Whilst the property has seemingly been attained at a ‘peppercorn’ rent there will be other running costs, eg fitting-out costs, rates, maintenance, etc. I attended the recent Annual Meeting and asked for an explanation of the need for such action, but unfortunately the answer given did not convince me.

Like most residents of Nettleham l am very proud of our village, which is in no small part due to the endeavours of our Parish Council, who should be applauded in this regard, but they must be ever mindful of the financial constraints of the moment.

Senior Ramblings I was in a shop that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. An attractive young lady walked over and asked: ”What brings you in today?”. I said: “I’m interested in buying a fridge”.

She appeared to be a little confused.

Am I getting to be that age?

I was thinking about what a status symbol those trendy mobile phones are that everyone has clipped onto their belts. I can’t afford one, so I’m wearing my garage door opener.

I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call ‘blue teeth’, I think.

You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn’t like me anyway.

I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age and call it ‘Pumping Rust’.

I’ve got that dreaded old furniture ailment when your chest is falling into your drawers!

When people see a cat’s litter tray they always say: “Oh, have you got a cat?”

Just once I want to say, “No, it’s for the use of visitors!”

If you’re faced with filling in a form which asks “Who is to be called in case of an emergency”. I think you should write: ‘An ambulance’.

I was thinking about how people seem to read the bible a lot more as they get older. Then it suddenly dawned on me - they’re cramming for their finals!

Nettleham Medical Practice Dr Baker’s Retirement Dr Simon Baker is retiring in the middle of April after over 15 years at the practice. He will be sorely missed by staff and patients, but we all wish him a happy and healthy retirement.

If Dr Baker was listed as your usual GP, your records have been updated and Dr Elmer Molave will now be your usual GP. Friends and Family Test December 2014 was our first month for patients to submit a Friends and Family Test (FFT) comment about the practice either online via our website, or by completing one of the postcards located in the waiting rooms at both practice sites.

In December we had 26 responses.

Full details of the responses can be found on our website, or on posters displayed in the practices.

The practice wants to hear from you, so please take the time to complete a form, or submit a response online.

Missed Appointments The practice continues to experience a high number of appointments which patients do not attend (called ‘DNAs’ for short). During January, over 12 hours of doctor time and 79 hours of nursing time were lost due to DNAs, and in February 14 hours of doctor time and 46 hours of nursing time.

If you are unable for any reason to attend an appointment that you have booked, do please contact the practice and cancel, so that it can be allocated to someone else.

We are now able to send SMS text reminders to patients to remind them of their appointments. If you would like to receive SMS reminders, please let the receptionist know when booking the appointment and they will be able to activate this for you.

We thank you for your help in trying to reduce the number of DNA appointments in 2015.

Online Services From the beginning of February 2015, patients who have registered for online access to book or cancel appointments, or order repeat prescriptions are now also able to view their complete medication records and their allergies online.

If you do not currently have access to this facility, please call in at either practice site with some photographic ID and the receptionist will be happy to create your unique login details.

Electronic Transfer of Prescriptions From the middle of May 2015, the practice is planning to implement the use of the electronic prescription service.

What does this mean for you?

If you collect your repeat prescriptions from a pharmacy, you will not have to visit the GP practice to pick up your paper prescription. Instead, your GP will send it electronically to the pharmacy you’ve chosen, saving you time.

You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because your chosen pharmacy can be near to where you live, work or shop, or even a registered online pharmacy.

You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy, as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be made ready before you arrive.

More information will be available as we get closer to the implementation date in mid-May 2015.

NETTLEHAM SCOUT GROUP

This year is the Nettleham Scout Group 70th Anniversary. It is believed that the group in some form has been going a lot longer than this, but according to the records kept at the National Scout Centre at Gilwell Park, Nettleham was first registered on 26 July 1945, so: “Happy 70th Birthday Nettleham Scout Group!”

We have recently taken part in the FROGS (Friends of Nettleham Guides and Scouts) bi-annual Gang Show together with the various guiding units in Nettleham.

The theme was “Around the World in 80 Minutes” and the units produced a variety of songs and dances from different countries. These ranged from the beavers performing a song from the Lion King (Africa), the brownies visiting Holland with ‘Tulips from Amsterdam’ and ‘I Saw a Mouse’, the two guide groups doing a montage of songs and the leaders performing a Morris Dance, with various other wonderful songs and sketches in between. As always the children put their heart and soul into the event and the fantastic amount of £1,800 was raised by the Hut Committee.

As the longer nights and warmer weather approach, we will be taking part in many outdoor activities. Our very popular ‘Breakfast on the Green’ will take place on Saturday 16 May on the village green did you come and enjoy one of our famous cooked breakfasts?

With the 70th anniversary in mind we are running a big Group Camp as part of our celebrations in July at Walesby Forest Scout Camp. The leaders, scouts, cubs and even the beavers will be camping over a weekend and taking part in lots of great activities. There will also be a Family Celebration at Sudbrooke Campsite with BBQ, games and the traditional campfire.

The children have also been asked to enter a competition to design a special celebration badge which hopefully will be worn on the back of our group neckers.

Stepping Stones Pre-school Well done to Early Years Practitioner Katie Trutwein for completing her Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Childcare, and hopefully by the time you read this Elaine Jenkinson will also have finished hers.

Hello and welcome to the latest news from Stepping Stones Pre-school.

During the summer term the children who are going to move on to ‘big’ school will benefit from visits from the reception class teachers from their prospective schools.

This is a lovely way for the teachers and children to get to know each other before September, paving the way for a smooth transition. All of our children are encouraged to be as independent as they can be, whether it is putting on their own coat, or managing their lunch box at lunch time. This again all makes their move onto school a little easier for everyone, parents and carers, teachers and most importantly the children.

We had visits from lots of different animals and other creatures during the last few weeks. First we had a visit from Zoolab who brought in different creatures for us to meet, including two pretty rats, a pink corn snake called Sophie, a giant millipede and Tracy the tarantula. The children were able to hold and stroke all the creatures if they wished. All, that is, except Tracy, we just looked at her!

Later in the term, Samantha, a really old tortoise and Sally, the Giant African Land Snail, came in to see us and we learnt that they had just come out of their hibernation when they’d had a really long sleep.

We watched in amazement as our frog spawn turned into tadpoles and at the time of writing they had started to sprout little back legs. Once they have developed into froglets we shall release them into our wildlife garden.

All of our staff have Paediatric First Aid and four also have Adult First Aid. In addition, most staff have also received extra training in the use of an Epipen and Inhalers, should these ever be needed.

We also had a jar of stick insects, but we couldn’t really see them once we put them into the jar with lots of leaves and twigs!

Finally we had a little chicken called Baby come and see us, she was very soft.

We explored the differences between raw eggs and hard boiled eggs - who’d have thought eggs could be so much fun?

The children learnt about how important it is to wash hands after handling eggs and animals, and how we use quiet voices and gentle hands around the animals, so as not to scare or hurt them.

In the garden the children emptied the compost bin that we’ve been filling since last spring. All the lovely rotted-down compost was carefully transported over to our vegetable patch and dug in. The children found lots of small millipedes and worms that were living in it, and Julia (our Head Gardener) explained how they help to make the compost. We’ve now got potatoes, garlic, carrots and lettuce all growing in the vegetable plot. The children are also eagerly awaiting the strawberries, currants and plums to grow and ripen, so that we can eat them at snack time. Some of the Acorn children have been busy planting flowers in old wellies to brighten up our garden and they also planted some cress, which they took home to wait for it to grow.

The children (and staff) watched in amazement the solar eclipse, and all were very good at wearing their special eye protection.

We spend lots of time in the garden and, as well as our lovely vegetable and flower plots that the children maintain, we have a large sand pit, two growing willow structures to sit in and think, a small area for nature and a very popular mud kitchen.

Nettleham Cricket Club: Spring 2015 Weather over the winter was kind to the cricket club, and under the supervision of Dave Ranshaw and John Dingley the cricket square has responded well to their ground and grass treatment in readiness for another season of cricket.

Winter nets for both the junior and senior players also went well and were well-attended, training being given by the club’s qualified ECB coaches In addition to the club nets, the U13 team competed in the Lincoln U13 Indoor League under their manager Neil Bromfield.

This is a pilot event organised by the Lincolnshire Cricket Board and the league comprises Nettleham, Hartsholme, Bracebridge Heath A, Bracebridge Heath B and Lindum.

The new covers will be wider, with better drainage and thanks must go to David Wheatley for all the effort he has put in on behalf of the club.

However, the covers will cost in region of £4K, so if you are able to help with sponsorship or donations towards the shortfall, please contact the club, as this facility aids all the junior and senior teams.

The league was played over several months with each team playing each other twice.

Out of 8 games Nettleham won 5 and lost 3, the losses coming against Bracebridge Heath A and Hartsholme twice.

A large squad of players was used to fulfil the fixtures: Charlie Elliott, Haydn Bromfield, Dan Hopkirk, Ed Sharrock, Oliver Ward, Will Ward, Lewis Jones, Reece Jones, Elise Keyworth, Will Beckett, Alex Howes, Guy Hinchliffe, Pranav Pothula, Cameron West, Harry Attfield, Harry Thornton and Sandeep Reddy.

Everyone seemed to enjoy playing and hopefully they will carry on their good form into the outdoor season.

Also over the winter, U15 Captain Lewis Bromfield, has recently returned from a cricket tour of Sri Lanka with the Lincolnshire County Cricket squad. This was a great cricketing experience which will stay with him forever. Lewis played 5 matches at various grounds including an international ground The committee continues to work hard off the field and the club is delighted to have been awarded a £2.5K grant from the ECB towards the purchase of new covers for

The opening games of the season started the following day in warm April sunshine, the Saturday 1st XI playing at home to Scunthorpe in Division 1 of the Lincolnshire League. Scunthorpe made 203 all out in 47 of their allowed 50 overs, 4 wickets for 50 runs for Rhett Bridgens, 2 wickets apiece for Danny Lea and Tom Dalton, and 1 each for Adi Sreedharan and Matt Smith.

In reply, Nettleham’s top order struggled and they were at one stage 96 - 6 before a record 7th wicket partnership of 110 between captain Jack Curtis 79no and Adi Sreedharan 63no gave victory to Nettleham by 4 wickets.

Each game was played with a team of 8 in a pairs format, with each pair batting for 3 overs each. An innings consisted of 12 overs with a bowler being able to bowl a maximum of 3 overs. Runs were scored by running between the wickets as well as hitting the back and side walls. In addition there were also ‘double runs’ scoring zones where a player could double their runs by hitting the ball into these areas.

Nettleham played very well in all of their games and on the occasions they lost, they were close matches, where the result could have gone either way.

Afterwards a well-supported family Race Night was organised by social committee member Danny McCardell.

Overseas player Rhett Bridgens

The club is glad to welcome back overseas player Rhett Bridgens from South Africa for his second season at the club. As well as helping with coaching within the club, Rhett will also be coaching at Nettleham Junior School this summer. He will be coaching on Mondays (9.00am - 4.30pm) for a period of 12 weeks (the summer term) highlighting how the benefits of an overseas player can help the local community.

The following day, the Sunday 1stXI opened their season in Lincoln League Division 1 when they hosted neighbours Cherry Willingham at Mulsanne. Batting first, on another glorious day, Nettleham were 192 all out, top scorer and continuing his good batting form, was Adi Sreedharan with 50 runs. Cherry Willingham could only reach 162 for 8 wickets in their 40 overs, so Nettleham won by 30 runs. The bowlers shared the wickets, with 2 apiece for Martin Strawson, James White, Alex Willerton and Adi Sreedharan.

Junior coaching started at Mulsanne on Friday 17 April from 6.30pm - 8.00pm and will run throughout the summer term.

It was also the junior signing-on night, where parents could find out about how the club was run, junior teams and their fixtures, club kit, as well as about coaching, the club status as an ECB ‘Focus Club’ and the ‘Child Protection’ Policy.

The club have a comprehensive junior league schedule this year and are running 2 x U9 teams, U10 team, U11 team, 2 x U13 teams and U15 team. Each team will play each other home and away this year, a change to the recent format, so this will mean not only commitment from junior players, but also their managers and coaches, as well as a lot of work for John and Dave with the extra groundwork.

All Change for Summer atNettleham Methodist Church During the month of August there will be an alteration in the time of our regular Sunday Morning Worship services. Instead of services at 9.00am and 10.45am, the congregations will come together in a united service each week.

Then, in September, we will be back to our regular choice of service styles each week with a 9.00am traditional Sunday Worship and a 10.45am service, a more contemporary Worship service.

Our Harvest Celebration this year, on 27 September, will begin with coffee served from 10.15am. The service, starting at 10.45am, will bring together both congregations in this special celebration of God’s generous provision for us, followed by a shared lunch afterwards.

205-5. Chasing the game for time and batting points, Nettleham had reached 160-7, a 50 for opener Dave Manby, when the heavens opened and ended the game early.

Fortunately the weather had improved enough the following day for the Sunday 2ndXI’s opening game of the season against Carholme 1stXI in Division 4 of the Lincoln league.

Batting first, Carholme were dismissed for 83, wickets shared between the bowlers, but the pick was Haydn Bromfield with 3 for 21 runs. In reply Nettleham made 84-5, an innings held together by 44 runs from Sam McCardell.

Overall, a successful opening two weekends for the senior teams of the club, the junior teams start their midweek fixtures this week.

This is a 4-day coaching week where you will be able to enhance your cricket skills and knowledge of the game.

Nettleham CAP Debt Centre is a Year Old The Nettleham CAP (Christians Against Poverty) Debt Centre has been open for a year now, with our first visit on 28 April 2014.

Since then we have seen 25 clients, for a total of 54 visits, and we are helping, or have helped, 49 family members. No debt is too large or too small for CAP to be able to have a solution. The majority of clients live in North Lincoln, but we have seen clients from as far afield as Middle Rasen, Saxilby and Hemswell Cliff.

We have used 16 Foodbank/Community Larder vouchers, and have done two emergency food shops. We have also sourced a second-hand cooker for one family, to replace a broken one.

The vast majority of clients are managing to budget well and pay into their ‘CAP Plan’ to pay off their debts; in fact one family have actually managed to accrue over £150 in savings, a great difference from the situation we found them in.

Two clients are already debt-free, and we expect another family to be completely debt-free through repayment very soon.

In January, we had a Client Party, with 7 clients attending, to have fun, food and also watch a DVD. Even on the first visit with a client, you can see a change in their outlook. Our first ever client said at the end of our visit: “I can’t believe that I am actually smiling”. They know that we, as the CAP debt centre, but 27

also as individuals, have the desire to help them get out of debt and also support them during the journey. The first thing I tell them on the first visit, after saying congratulations on calling for our help, is that God loves them, and that is why we are doing this, to show that love.

All the volunteers (16 of them) are really positive about how the Debt Centre can help clients, and are really ‘blown away’ by the CAP system. Our church, and those in the Methodist circuit in North Lincoln, can see that we are making a difference in the local community.

Starting at the end of March, in rotation with the Lincoln Debt Centre at Alive, we have a morning ‘surgery’ every week, within the Lincoln Jobcentre Plus, with the staff being able to refer suitable potential clients.

The centre continues to be financially secure, thanks to support from individuals, Nettleham Methodist Church, Lincoln North Circuit, the Lincolnshire Methodist District, and two grants, from Tearfund and a local Trust Fund.

To finish, I would like to thank all those who support the Debt Centre, whether it be visiting, praying, helping practically, or with finances; plus the encouragement of you all. God is doing great things through this ministry.

Nettleham Community of Blessing It is now over two years since we started meeting as: “Christians Together”, firstly as a prayer group, and then arranging occasional events, such as: “Candles on the Green” and, more recently: “Prayer for the Nation” during the election period.

Over time we have evolved into a community across the church denominations. We have a booklet of Daily Prayers to encourage a holy life-style, which includes mid-day prayers for the nation, and a weekly Friday Prayer for Nettleham and the surrounding villages.

We have also established four “Core Values” to give us direction: 1) To seek unity (not uniformity) so fulfilling Christ’s prayer before his crucifixion.

2) To be a praying community.

3) To be a community of blessing to bless the Lord in united worship, and, through word and action, all whom we meet.

4) To be a community which is seeking ways to serve God in unity, so furthering the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

Our Community of Blessing meets on the last Saturday of each month at 10.00am - l2 noon in the Nettleham Old Schoolrooms. It continues to evolve, as each new arrival brings another element to enhance and enrich our lives together. Perhaps you might like to join us?

Who’s a Clever Boy Then?

A butcher is shooing a dog from his shop when he sees £10 and a note in the dog’s mouth. He grabs the note which reads: “10 lamb chops, please.”

Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog’s mouth and quickly closes the shop. He follows the dog and watches him wait for a green light at the pedestrian crossing, look both ways, then trot across the road to a bus stop. The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench.

When a bus arrives, the dog walks around to the front,checks the route number, then boards the bus.

Dumbstruck the butcher follows the dog onto the bus. As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog is gazing out of the window taking in the scenery. After a while he stands on his back paws to push the ‘stop’ bell and when he gets off the butcher follows.

The dog runs along the street to a house, opens the gate and runs up the path to the door where he drops his bag on the step and barks repeatedly.

There is no answer, so he goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself (thud!) against the door. He does this again and again.

There is still no response, so he jumps up onto a wall and from there onto a window-ledge, where he taps on the window with his tail, barking repeatedly again, jumps off and waits at the front door.

Eventually, a little old man opens it and seeing the dog sitting there, starts cursing and shouting loudly at it.

The butcher runs up and screams at him: “What are you doing? This dog’s a genius!”

The owner responds: “Genius, my foot. It’s the second time this week he’s forgotten his key!”

Fundraising for Link to Hope

One Night in a Onesie

For the past 25 years, our small, friendly group of ladies have been meeting on the second Monday afternoon of each month in the Small Room at the Old School.

Thank you so much to all who supported our Coffee Morning at Church View on Friday 20 March.

We enjoy a varied and interesting programme of speakers and demonstrators and also have the opportunity to participate in county and national activities. This year there are many special events celebrating the “100 Years of the Women’s Institute”.

It was so kind of the Scheme Manager to allow us the use of the lounge, making it easy for the ladies who live there to join us.

Thank you also to all those kind folk who looked after the stalls, gave raffle prizes and baked us cakes. It all helped towards a glorious morning of fun and fellowship

Ladies, come and attend any of our meetings - visitors are always welcome.

It was so good to share the photographs of the 2014 Shoebox delivery, see the smiles that our boxes had generated and also to learn that 34,000 shoeboxes had been safely delivered. It was also a great opportunity to discuss the contents of the boxes, particularly the gifts which had been sent to the elderly. The event raised £244.00 which is now safely in the bank.

The coins and even notes placed in the jar amounted to £50.00 and this was sent to Worthing to enable them to meet requests for financial help.

The Truth Will Out! Today, our teacher asked what my favourite animal was, and I said fried chicken.

She said I wasn’t funny, but she can’t have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me always to tell the truth and I did. Fried chicken is my favourite animal.

I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of the RSPCA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too especially chicken, pork and beef.

Anyway, my teacher sent me to the headteacher’s office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favourite live animal was.

I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.

She sent me back to the headteacher’s office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don’t understand. My parents taught me always to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most.

I told her: “Colonel Sanders.”

Guess where I am now!

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice is inviting the local community to join them for their historical Moonlight Walk, which is set to take place in Lincoln on Saturday 6 June, setting off from Yarborough Leisure Centre.

Due to the county-wide popularity of last year’s walks, the local charity has decided to return with ‘One Night in a Onesie’ as the theme for the second consecutive year.

The walk is held at night, attracts hundreds of supporters of all ages, both men and women, and is a sponsored event.

The walk will begin and end at Yarborough Leisure Centre and will be approximately 10K in length. Registration is from 9.00pm and the walk will start promptly at 10.00pm.

Registration fee includes a drawstring bag to carry everything on the night, a onesie walker number, refreshments for when the walk is finished and a commemorative gift after you cross the finish line.

Please note that entrants must be over 11 years of age on the date of the event.

Participants aged between 11 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

To continue our fundraising, a stall has been booked at ‘Nettleham Cares’ to be held on Saturday 17 October in the Village Hall.

Partial Solar Eclipse The Editor

I trust all of our readers witnessed the partial solar eclipse which occurred around 9.30am on Friday 20 March this year, when approximately 90% of the sun’s disc was obscured by the moon. The dusk-like effect of the dimmed daylight was very eerie and although I took several photographs, they appeared to be under-exposed and faulty images!

It is quite a rare astronomical event and the next one isn’t until 2026, then a very long wait until 2090. It’s a sobering thought when you realise that most of the people now alive and well on this planet will be dead and gone by the time the second one comes around (me included)! In the time frame of the universe however, it is merely the blink of an eye!

Why I Joined and Remain In early 2009 the Parish Council were preparing the Nettleham Design Guide for which we needed several photographs of the many aspects of Nettleham village which we wanted to record and preserve.

I was asked to contact RB Camera Club, which meets every Friday evening in Nettleham village hall, for their assistance.

I went to the next Club meeting and requested a contribution of images of Nettleham from members (which they subsequently provided and were used), liked what I saw, enjoyed the Club meeting and have remained a member ever since.

What does the Club offer from its full year of meetings? ● A chance to meet and converse with photographers of all styles and abilities. ● Opportunities to see ‘new’ styles and techniques: for example at one of my first meetings the Chairman explained, and showed to those members who didn’t know, how to create one large panoramic image from several photographs taken in an arc. I then created a panoramic image of the Trent Valley, from the public viewing point near Scampton and entered it in a Club ‘Panoramic Image’ competition.

● Practical evenings where you bring your own camera and, with guidance, if needed, photograph interesting people modelling for us using the Club’s flash equipment. ● Club photographic competitions: some using your digital images projected on a screen and some using your colour and black and white prints. The subject matters are widely varied and some categories are chosen each year by members at their AGM in November.

For example this year they included ones on ‘Altered Reality’, ‘People’, ‘Scapes’ (to include Landscapes, Seascapes and Cityscapes) and Street Photography, together with the subjects included every year entitled ‘Flora and Fauna’, ‘Mini POTY’ (featuring three images on a theme - POTY stands for Photographer of the Year), ‘The Print of the Year’ and ‘The Projected Image of the Year’.

Members may enter up to four photographs in each section of every competition if they wish - all of which are constructively commented on by the judge for that evening. ● We also have ‘Show and Tell’ evenings where Club members can present their own work. ● Outside visits - last year, for example, we went to Scampton RAF station. ● Outside speakers visiting the Club give us shows of their photographs taken all over the world and of a variety of subjects, including birds and animals, together with information on how they took them. In addition this year, for example, we had a presentation of images from a Lincoln astronomer and a London celebrity and paparazzo photographer. ● DVD’s on a variety of subjects, including tutorials, are available for members to borrow and view at home. ● The Club is in regular contact with a photography club in Lincoln, Nebraska, and we exchange and judge each other’s images annually.

There is a full and varied programme each year which both the expert and the beginner in photography can equally enjoy and participate in.

Finally Finished!

Regular visitors to the Bishop’s Palace site, and Bishop’s Meadow in particular, will have watched with interest as renovation of the dry stone wall has progressed over the course of the last two years.

This photograph, taken at Bishop’s Meadow on Thursday 9 April 2015, shows the full team having just completed this challenging and time-consuming, but very worthwhile and rewarding project.

Everyone agrees how much the wall enhances other work done on the creation of Bishop’s Meadow and how it provides a splendid new addition to the village scene and a useful refuge for small wildlife.

The team from The Conservation Volunteers (TVC) who assisted in the construction of the traditional dry stone wall and whose enthusiasm and commitment, over many months, come rain or shine, has enabled such a magnificent southern boundary wall to be built at Bishop’s Meadow

Bishop’s Palace Site: The Final Phase Bishop’s Palace Site Update We have now reached the final chapter in the development of this site with the completion of the dry stone wall along the southern boundary of Bishop’s Meadow.

The Lincolnshire Echo was on hand to record the event.

Over the past 3 months the residue of the grant money (totalling over £46,000) received for this project from Corytrust, Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), WREN and WLDC Councillor Initiative Fund, has been spent. The activities included 1. Completion of dry stone wall - £9,750 fully funded by Corytrust.

2. Laying a crushed Derbyshire limestone footpath from the cemetery to the Prince’s Gate (between the meadow and the SAM).

- £2,094 jointly funded by HLF and Councilor Initiative Fund.

3. A final report has been sent off to HLF to enable the final 10% of funds to be released. Invoices attributed to HLF totalled £23,718. A copy of the final report is included and will be put on the Parish Council website.

4. Planting of 7 memorial trees in the Bishop’s Meadow between Prince’s Gate and the Royal Oak (see pages 36/37) 5. A site maintenance plan has been produced to help guide the preservation of this site.

The Future The Steering Group have now completed the conversion of what was once a disused and overgrown field into a valued village heritage amenity and now feel that it is appropriate to hand it over to the Parish Council Property committee to oversee the maintenance after 1 April 2015.

It is anticipated that the Steering Group may meet from time to time to propose activities and improvements to the site, but will only be involved in any enhancements at the request of the Property Committee.

Memorial Tree Planting Despite the dull, cloudy day and bitterly cold wind, spirits were high as folk who had previously purchased a memorial tree for Bishop’s Meadow came to the site on the morning of Saturday 21 March 2015 to plant their trees, which form a small copse in the north-west corner of the site.

Two members of Nettleham Woodland Trust: Chris Williams and Rod Newborough were present to offer expert advice on the planting of the young trees. The bare-root saplings of British native trees, specially supplied by British Hardwood Tree Nursery Limited of Snitterby, were very small, but this is intentional as this would give the saplings the best chance of ‘taking’, whereas transplanted larger trees may not take root so readily.

The next development in the evolution of Bishop’s Meadow will be the installation of a number of memorial benches around the site and to minimise future maintenance costs these will probably be made from recycled plastic materials and are virtually indistinguishable from natural wood.

Any individual or group interested in perhaps donating a bench should contact the parish office (details on page 5).

An Undiscovered Talent - Discovered The D’Arcy family, on the father’s side, are original inhabitants of Nettleham. The children were born here and attended junior school, in the fine Old School buildings: which was connected with ‘All Souls’ church across the road on the other side of the Beck; where the children attended the Sunday school on Sunday afternoons.

During recent years a familiar scene in Nettleham has been that of Lloyd, wheeling his aged mother in her wheel-chair into the village from time to time: quietly, unostentatiously, not even aware of being noticed. She attained the grand age of 95; but sadly that is now a chapter closed, and she awaits the call of the Life-Giver.

But duty done is its own reward. Subsequently Lloyd was in the process of unearthing various items of his own, in anticipation of having to move:

which he since has done, very happily be it said, to quiet Branston, not so far away.

About 20 years ago Lloyd had designed a banner: which displays unquestionable natural artistic skill; which he had since kept, carefully rolled up, among his possessions, where he lived with his mother.

It came to light and Lloyd was pondering what to do with it, when it was suggested, it might be appreciated by the parish church, with which he has had such close connections all his life.

The offer was eagerly accepted; and Lloyd was present at its instatement, quiet and unassuming among the congregation. When it was publicly announced, that Sunday morning, by the Rev Richard Thornton, together with the Rector, Richard Crossland, on ‘The Festival of Christ the King’, (how appropriate to the banner’s title:

‘Jesus Son of God’), that Lloyd was both the designer and the donor of that majestic piece of work: the entire congregation burst out into spontaneous applause and appreciation.

The banner, bequeathed to his old church, now adorns one lovely corner of the sanctuary: a perpetual memento, in a place of security, to Lloyd and the D’Arcy family. But more, one trusts: a pointer to our gracious Saviour. You can see it if you just drop by and look (the church is open every day during daylight hours).

One is bound to wonder: how many other talents, of unnumbered individuals, are yet undiscovered, or lie dormant and unexpressed. What can you do, that has not yet been put to use?

Police News Dear Resident, In the coming months I understand that yellow lines, signs and designated parking bays are anticipated being placed around the village centre including Vicarage Lane and The Green.

In recent months your Neighbourhood Policing Team has been approached by local residents concerned about parking in the village. In response to this we are keen to work closely with both residents and visitors to the village in order that traffic flow, noise and pollution are managed in a responsible fashion.

Parking I would like to take this opportunity to remind every vehicle user of their responsibilities when parking or waiting and include the following notes: 1.You MUST NOT wait or park on yellow lines during the times of operation shown on nearby time plates 2. Double yellow lines indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time, even if there are no upright signs. You MUST NOT wait or park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers.

3. Use off-street parking areas, or bays marked out with white lines on the road as parking places, wherever possible.

If you have to stop on the roadside: 4. Do not park facing against the traffic flow.

5. Stop as close as you can to the side.

can be seen by observing car parking habits around us, many people park too close on a daily basis.

Although there isn’t a law that specifically prohibits motorists from parking close to a junction, you may still find your vehicle ticketed on your return. A non-endorsable (no penalty points added to your driving licence) Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) under the offence of unnecessary obstruction will see you fined and this can be issued by a Police Officer only since the decriminalisation of parking enforcement.

How far should I park from a junction?

It’s more of a question of common sense rather than the need to get out your tape measure every time you park. As a guide (not law), the Highway Code states 10 metres from a junction and not to park opposite. Many drivers do, of course, park close to a junction, so before doing so, see if it’s possible to avoid it. If you do park a little close, take into account larger vehicles such as buses, delivery vans, lorries, ambulances and vehicles with trailers. Can they access the area and if so, can they do so without the need to mount pavements? Are you obstructing pedestrian access anywhere, potentially affecting the vulnerable in our community?

Obstructing dropped kerbs or driveways?

If the answer is no to all, then you’re probably good to go.

What do Civil Parking Enforcement Officers deal with?

The exhaust emissions from running engines unnecessarily add to increased noise and pollution.

These powers were introduced by the Road Traffic Act 1991 (amended by the Traffic Management Act 2004) and local authorities have to apply to central government to take on the powers and responsibility for parking enforcement.

So what powers have the police retained?

The police will NOT be responsible for enforcing any waiting, loading or parking restrictions. We will carry on issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for parking on pedestrian crossing zigzags, as this offence also carries penalty points. We will also continue to deal with obstruction and all moving traffic offences.

Another concern raised is with regard to vehicle users parking and leaving their engine running whilst stationary. This leads to unnecessary noise and pollution and is an offence under what we term as Construction and Use Regulations - please remember to switch your engine off when stopped!

Over the coming months my team and I will be working closely with the Co-op and local Parish Council to support them with the introduction of the new proposed regulations. This will include some new signage, patrols by members of the local policing team and enforcement by Police Officers and Civil Parking Enforcement Officers, should the need arise.

As you have probably gathered, Traffic Law and Parking Regulations can be quite a dry subject, but regulations are enacted to provide a safe environment for both vehicle users and local residents.

If you’ve managed to read through this article, then thank you for your time and attention, it’s probably time to put the kettle on and reflect on how we can all be as considerate as possible when parking and using the village centre.

FUNDRAISING FOR SIGHT SAVERS Thank you all for your support of the Eggstra Special Coffee Morning held on Saturday 28 March in aid of Sight Savers.

It turned out to be a very busy morning in the village, with several coffee mornings being held. Thank you so much to all who came, some for a second cup of coffee, having already enjoyed one elsewhere and others who couldn’t possibly manage the coffee, but called in to support the cause.

A very big thank you also to all those kind folk who looked after the various stalls and made us such delicious coffee. It was a great morning of fun and fellowship and we raised the grand sum of £173.00.

Doris Colman and Win Rollin had been busy making chicks and bunnies and sales of these at the Salon by Glynis and her staff had raised a further £20.00. Similar sales of these goodies at Lincoln Hospital added £66.00 to our funds.

Many folk gave donations and so it was that the grand sum of £315.00 has now been sent to Sight Savers. Wonderful generosity from you all so, on behalf of all those folk who will now have improved eye care, I send a very big THANK YOU. To continue our fundraising, I have booked a stall at Nettleham Cares (see above) so look forward to seeing you there. Thank you all again.

Nettleham Neighbourhood Consultation Process As stated in the previous edition of Nettleham News, we concluded our Regulation 14 Statutory Consultation on the Plan on 31 January 2015.

In addition to consulting with residents, we also contacted 42 other bodies, notifying them of the Draft Plan and asking for comments.

Details of the responses have now been analysed and a summary is provided here. In addition, the Parish Council website (the Neighbourhood Plan section) contains a more detailed report on the responses.

It was very gratifying for the Committee to see that we had over 95% of residents agreeing with the Plan, although this figure did include a number of residents with minor reservations, most notably relating to bridleways and footpaths.

The responses we received from the statutory consultees were generally supportive of the Plan, but there were comments on the wording of some policies. Some responses did identify alternative development locations and housing numbers, although these had already been assessed using the various assessment criteria employed in the process and evidence gathered from local consultations and found to be less suitable than the sites proposed in the Plan.

Expert Support To help us ensure that the Plan had been written in a satisfactory manner, we retained the services of a past President of the Royal Institute of Town Planners (and Neighbourhood Plan Examiner). This person also reviewed the representations for us and provided us with guidance on the appropriateness of the representations made. We managed to obtain a grant to fund this expert support.

There were no major problems found with our Plan, although some of the justifications for the policies did need to be beefed up and policies reworded a little. As a result, a Submission version of the Draft Plan is now being completed. No substantial changes are being made to the Plan, so it won’t have to go out again for consultation.

The Next Stage The next stage is to produce a Submission copy of the Neighbourhood Plan to West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) as our Local Planning Authority. This document will need to be accompanied by the Strategic Environmental Report, a Basic Conditions Statement and a Consultation Statement, all of which are, necessarily, very lengthy documents, reflecting just a part of the enormous amount of work involved in our Neighbourhood Plan.

The Basic Conditions Statement must show how our Plan meets all the basic requirements of the legislation, including compliance with the national Planning Policy Framework and Local Plans.

In addition, a Consultation Statement is required which shows how the Plan has been influenced by representations made at the draft stage.

On submission of these documents to the Local Planning Authority (WLDC) the LPA will publicize the documents for 6 weeks prior to submitting them to external planning inspection.

The Planning Examiner will check that the Plan is compliant in every way with the law and make recommendations to WLDC. WLDC is the body which will ‘make the Plan’ so they will satisfy themselves that the Plan is indeed satisfactory, or discuss with us modifications prior to it going out to a local referendum of Nettleham residents. Due to the prescribed length of the various stages involved, we would expect the referendum to occur at the end of this year. Assuming a majority of voters agree, then the Plan will be adopted.

The really good news is that the Nettleham Neighbourhood Plan can carry weight for consideration of local planning issues throughout the process from Reg 14 consultation to the referendum, and the further along the process we are, the more weight is carried by our Plan.

A Message from the Rector of Nettleham By the end of the currency of this magazine, I will have been your Rector for more than a year. Margaret and I are very happy here we love the village and the people. The church is beautiful and full of really nice, supportive, imaginative and flexible folk.

After working for the first few months on the principle of watching and listening, tweaking things only slightly, and providing some ‘normal service’ for people to settle down.

Then we had the parish vision day last November, and then we wrote an extremely ambitious development plan, and everyone said yes, and we are now embarking on a major programme of development. It is a four-fold plan: 1. Deepening the faith and commitment of those in the church community, through teaching, courses, house groups, prayer, more frequent services, trips away and reading.

2. Bringing more people into the family of the church, as fellow travellers and pilgrims, through diverse worship opportunities, more outreach, better links with schools and young people, by being thoroughly inclusive, and by marketing (above and below the line) the experience of belonging to All Saints.

3. Making a greater impact on the community, the village and the world. We are starting giving to mission and charity again, planning to make All Saints an important centre for music, heritage tourism, and many social and cultural functions. Care for the elderly is a major challenge in Nettleham and All Saints wants to take some initiatives to help tackle it.

4. Creating a Parish Centre next to the church to meet our growing needs as a church and providing resources for the whole community. Building on or near the church is the only way to deal with this, so watch out for details of our possible £2m scheme.

We want to refresh the church interior as well. And make some facilities that have a real WOW factor.

The response has been great, and we have significantly increased the number of people at a service, by nearly 140% across the board, nearly doubling numbers at Christmas and Easter. We are appointing an administrator, and looking for an extra minister to work part time with young people and families.

Our 6.00am Easter Rockets are not the only talking point - we are picking up a sense across the community that something interesting is happening at All Saints.

As a result of all this activity, I get asked an increasing number of questions, so I thought I’d answer a few.

All Saints Parish

Isn’t the church a bit out of date?

Won’t the church be embarrassingly empty?

Just because the church in general has been around for over 2,000 years, doesn’t mean it cannot move with the times. Indeed it must.

I believe that the teaching of the church, including the bible itself, needs to be re-discovered, re-worked and re-interpreted for each generation. Our new pattern of worship tries to offer something for those who value the traditional type of service, and likewise for those who run our Breakfast Church.

No, at some of our services it will be pretty full - partly why we want to complement our church with some new buildings.

Isn’t the church more interested in itself than it is in the wider world and contemporary issues?

Yes, we can be a bit of a club. Churches often spend too much time on repairs and on activities for those already in the ship. Come and take a look, and see if we don’t make an increasing priority of helping others especially the young, the elderly and those struggling, or on the edge of society.

How would I fit in in a church service when I am not as holy as the others?

Well, don’t make assumptions about others.

We all find faith a struggle sometimes, and live with doubt. We all fall short of what God wants us to be. We are surrounded by temptations, we easily find ourselves lazy in prayer or service of others, and we are all in serious need of forgiveness. If this describes you, welcome to All Saints.

Should I worry that I don’t know enough about the faith and don’t know the jargon?

You don’t go to a café because you are feeling full! You go because you are hungry.

All Saints is developing all kinds of programmes to teach and add to the knowledge of those that come to church, but want to know much more. We are really aware of the risk of using two much ‘God-language!’. All our services, except for one of the weekday services, use contemporary language, and all our ministers have a relaxed attitude to leading worship.

How should I dress?

Please come as you are. You don’t need to dress up formally. Be comfortable - that is our maxim.

Will I be asked for money and pushed to volunteer?

No. We currently have collections at the 10.00am service and before the 8.00am.

It is up to you to decide whether and what to give. A church like All Saints provides lots of opportunities for joining in, and we hope you will want to get involved and just ‘attend’ but only when you are ready, and how you like.

Won’t my friends think I’m a bit of a nerd going to church?

What we aim to do through becoming followers of Jesus Christ, is to do mercy, seek justice and walk humbly with our God. Why is it nerdy to work to make the world a better place? To bring peace and prosperity?

To provide for the needs of those who have nothing? To stand up against injustice?

To confront bigotry? To seek to understand the purpose of our creator? And at All Saints we don’t do naïve church We don’t do shallow. We don’t do holier than thou. We don’t shy away from big questions or accept glib answers. We don’t wear polo-necks, play the guitar and sing trite songs.

Won’t I be the youngest person by decades?

Yes, there are quite a lot of older people in our church, but they are unusually vibrant and active, amazingly open-minded and enjoy helping others. If a mum of 30 wants to explore what following Jesus has to offer, or even just fancies a bit of a social on a Sunday with some great stories and a jolly song for her two very young children, then we’ve started Breakfast Church for her. She doesn’t need to worry if her kids will be quiet - please don’t be quiet! She will meet people of a similar age on a similar journey. Then, when we are all settled down we may try and put things together once in a while.

What if I can’t find what I need in service books and sheets?

At our Traditional Services, all the words you need on a Sunday morning, hymns and all, are in one special booklet just for that day.

At Breakfast Church, the words are on a screen so you just follow and join in.

I do hope you will come and explore All Saints, meet people, find how many others are in just the same position as you when it comes to faith. And I hope you will want to join in and help us make this a really vibrant, caring, creative, joyful, and, of course, faithful church at the heart of this village.

Whether you do or you don’t, we will continue to work and pray for all who live, work or attend school in this village. And we will keep your church open as a house of prayer. And be there to help you, support you, baptise your children, marry you and, in the fullness of time, bury you.

Church, Nettleham New-look Sundays at All Saints Since May, Sunday at All Saints Church in Nettleham has a new look, and a new pattern of worship. Five different slots - five different styles of worship.

It is all part of our new Parish Plan, and the idea is that people have different preferences for styles of worship and as a Parish Church we have a duty to cater for people with different tastes, and with different needs on their journey of faith and life. So if you like a simple spoken service, or a traditional service with well-known hymns, plenty for our excellent choir to do, formal liturgy and thought-provoking preaching, or a quiet, meditative service with gentle music and space to think and pray, or if you are looking for a fun family gathering with breakfast, games, lively music and stories that grab the attention of young kids; if you want a lively, alternative praise service with contemporary music styles, video and really challenging teaching, we have something for you.

Of course these different styles of worship, attracting different people, are joined together by the great atmosphere, friendly people and beautiful setting. They share our questioning, open-minded teaching.

They share our belief that the church, like God’s love, is for everyone, regardless of who they are: young or old, male or female, gay or straight, black or white, seasoned in the Christian faith or just beginning to explore, saint or sinner (we are all a bit of both, which is why we need the church!). They are united by their warmth, respect, sense of fun, strong mutual support, and search for God. They share a commitment to follow the way of Jesus Christ, who died to enable us to become the people God made us to be.

0800 Simple Church A quiet service of Holy Communion with prayers and a short talk, but no hymns or music. It lasts about 40 to 45 minutes. You can join in the words in the service book. Handy if you have other commitments later in the day 0915 Lively Church A really informal gathering, mostly in the Old School building. Ideal for families with young children. Older

children go with leaders to a separate hall for activities more suitable for their age-group. Best of all, there is a proper breakfast. It starts at about 0900, but you can go on helping yourself throughout the service to tea, coffee, chocolate and juice, cereals, toast and other goodies. Once a month we share in a simple service of Holy Communion.

Lasts no more than 45 minutes.

1030 Traditional Church A more orderly kind of service, with a choir which leads us in singing parts of the service and in both old and contemporary hymns. It is a Eucharist, when we all gather, like the early disciples, to encounter the risen Jesus Christ in the breaking of bread and sharing of wine. We carefully reflect the seasons of the year, and there are bible readings and special prayers about the things that concern us here and now, and a sermon - a talk which we try to make fun, challenging, instructive and thought-provoking. If you want to bring children, you are welcome to do so, and there is a slightly secluded space to be with them, with a good supply of toys for the very young. Afterwards there is tea and coffee and a chance to relax, meet people, ask questions and share ideas. Lasts 65-75 minutes.

1700 Meditative Church Not every week (see notice board and website), but the slot in which we do quiet and creative worship and give ourselves space to think, pray, listen out for God and centre ourselves. The 3rd Sunday is a Celtic-style service with prayer for Wholeness and Healing.

Others include services of reflection, of teaching and of spiritual exercises.

We even do Choral Evensong! Generally these services last 40-50 minutes

1900 Contemporary Church Very occasional and very informal - a time of fellowship, learning and praise, which may appeal to a younger crowd.

Good live contemporary-style worship music (live when we can get our music together). We are trying to create atmosphere with sound and light, with videos, and with engaging teaching.

There is coffee, etc, for half an hour before we start and these events often end with some form of communion.

The services can easily last 90 minutes.

COMPETITION RULES

1 The Nettleham News Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems containing a total of between five and ten stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. (Please note that it is two different KINDS of plants. Two varieties of the same plant are NOT two kinds).

1 The Nettleham News Top Tray class is for a collection

2 The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split into: 25 points for the colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display, and 10 marks for the overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes.

Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of

3 Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only - no seed-heads or berries will be allowed.

4 The vase can be any shape, size and material, but must be in proportion to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase itself.

5 No accessories whatsoever, such as bows and additional foliage, will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to that stem, is allowed. Packing material including Oasis - to keep the stems in place, is allowed.

6 The winner of the Nettleham News Top Vase class will receive the Top Vase Gold Award (+£5).

The runner-up will receive the Silver Award (+£3) and the third place will receive the Bronze Award (+£2).

NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant.

The different kinds of plants need to be taken from different genera. For instance, pinks, carnations and sweet william (which are all dianthus) would not be classed as different kinds.

Only fresh, home-grown flowers can be used in the vase. No dried or silk flowers are allowed.

A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers and which is taller than it is wide at its widest point.

The Nettleham News Top Vase class is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display single species classes at shows.

Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Vase class, bearing in mind that the entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.

Judges and exhibitors should note that the display has to be viewed all round.

The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors’ cards.

Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to, and decided by, the show officials.

Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification

of three types of vegetables taken from the following list of eight (the quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets): Carrots (3), Cauliflowers (2), Onions (3), Parsnips (3), Peas (6 pods), Potatoes (3), Runner Beans (6 pods), Tomatoes (6).

Where a tray has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurements that must not exceed 45cm x 60cm (18” x 24”).

3 A black cloth is permitted and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sand, rings, etc, will be allowed. Onion tops may be tied, or whipped using raffia or string.

4 The winner of the Nettleham News Top Tray class will receive the Gold Award (+£5). The runner-up will receive the Silver Award (+£3) and the third place will receive the Bronze Award (+£2).

NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES

Wine bottles should be clean and shiny with sparkling clear wine that is in the correct class. (See special rules for Group 12).

All exhibit numbers must be placed on rear of item.

PLEASE NOTE All flowers, vegetables, fruit, produce and wine left on the tables will be auctioned for Association funds.

Please support the raffles and tombola in aid of Association funds.

Carrots and parsnips must have foliage trimmed back to 7.5cm (3”).

Peas and beans must be displayed with some stalk attached.

Tomatoes must be displayed with calyces still attached (the green flower-bud case).

Judges may handle exhibits, open pods, etc, to check for quality.

The tray, board or staging must not be cut or mutilated in any way at all - such as cutting holes for standing onions in.

Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Tray class, remembering that entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.

Fare Well A short story by T M Lewis “I wish to confess”, she uttered the words to the priest in the closeted confessional.

“I have revenge in my soul. I wish someone dead”. She ranted on, her voice persistent, agitated. She dug her fingers into the palms of her hands drawing blood. “Hate fills my being. How am I to get rid of the burning in my soul?” She waited for the priest’s answer.

“My child! My child!” he admonished her.

He felt discomforted by the tone of her voice - how many times had he heard the same rantings from unbalanced people.

“You must blot out these thoughts for your soul’s redemption” his thick bass voice droned on. “You must restrict food and wine for a week, no red meat and say three hail Mary’s every day until you come to see me again”.

The priest sighed, his thoughts turned to his port and cigars which he enjoyed every evening. “Go now my child and do as I tell you. Bless you”. He made the sign of the cross and closed the shutter of the box with relief.

She watched him leave the confessonial box with a swirl of his velvet cape. He knelt down in front of the altar and bowed his head in prayer. He didn’t notice her slim pale-faced figure leave the church.

She left the church, her heart still full of devouring fire, her past like icicles in her soul, her waking days black with revenge.

She remembered the orphanage where she had been dragged after her parents had died in a fatal accident.

The Catholic nuns, dark and forbidding, were kind at first - especially the young nuns, but they were frightened of the older nuns and chose to ignore the complaints of the children in their care, the main complaint being the Matron.

A shudder ran through her as she remembered the fat, sallow-skinned, ferocious-eyed Matron. The cruelty started on the second day, when she had refused to give up her cloth doll to the Matron.

She had watched as the Matron threw the doll into the fire and had screamed and kicked her. Her punishiment was severe.

She was beaten with a stick, her hair roughly shorn, her fingers bent backwards to the smile on the Matron’s face.

“I’ll work and beat the Devil out of you my girl”, the Matron expounded at length.

The other girls, silent, with white faces, watched this ritual - they all had been subjected to the same treatment.

Her pillow, wet with tears, she descended into darkness and prayed to God to help her misery, but there was only silence.

The years slowly passed. She had grown into a pretty, but subdued, young woman.

The teachings of the nuns did nothing to halt her fears of the outside world.

The Matron still induced fear in them all.

Oh yes! She could read and write, but religion was her biggest fear.

When it was time to leave the orphanage she was just seventeen years of age.

She said tearful goodbyes to her friends, friends like herself, knowing she was unlikely to ever see them again. She left without a backward glance.

The nuns provided her with a job: assistant to the local school for infants. It consisted of filing papers, sweeping dusty floors, soothing crying children. She thought there must be more to life than this and soon left the school and the cries of the children followed her as she left quietly, her worn suitcase tied up with string.

She slunk away like a thief in the night.

She found a job as a waitress. It was hard work, but she felt free for the first time in her young life. She met many men, but her sexual encounters with them couldn’t remove the coldness in her soul. They thought she was frigid and no one fell in love with her. She felt the rejection deeply and blamed the orphanage for her lost feelings.

The idea came to her one lonely night: revenge! She bought two cans of petrol, before her visit to the priest.

Having cleansed her soul, she made her plans. Watching in the darkness, she waited and waited, the cold and dampness gave her a sort of crowning satisfaction.

She was suffering for the good of her being, wasn’t that the favourite expression of the nuns?

The morning dawned bright and the sun came out warming the place where she was hidden. She watched furtively as the young orphans were packed into coaches, for their day’s outing - a yearly trip to the seaside. “Big deal” she murmured to herself.

The Matron didn’t like the sand and the screaming joyous children running like the wind in their one day of freedom. She preferred to stay in her comfortable room listening to her records and smoking a forbidden cigarette.

She crept to the large house standing silent and dismal and quietly crept up the long stairs that seemed to stretch into heaven. Flushed with the exertion, she rested for a moment, then crept to the Matron’s door. Placing her ear against the frame, she heard the music issuing from the record player. She knelt and spread the petrol over the outside carpet and the painted door and lit it, watching the flames run up the doorway. The burning carpet gave out a lot of smoke, so she covered her nose and mouth and listened to the Matron’s screams. She laughed to herself - the Matron’s room was on the third floor and there was no way out, unless she fell out of the window!

Running down the long stairs it seemed an eternity until she reached the bottom.

She ran outside - the flames by now had spread along the hallways and soon all the upper rooms were alight.

The children would have to be rehoused and she was content with that thought.

She had saved them - now for her confession to the priest.

The priest was horrified at her confession.

He pleaded with her to give herself up to the police, but she knew he would not give her away. The impunity of the church would hide her - at long last the church would save her and she thought this was rather ironic.

With a clear mind, her soul in repose, she left the town she had always hated.

She settled herself into the worn train seat, her shabby suitcase above her head. The compartment was empty and she smiled with contentment as she watched ducks disport themselves on village ponds as the train rushed past.

The newspapers ran a headline the next day about the horrific train crash - many dead and wounded. A smaller news item about an orphanage burning down appeared somwhere on the third page the single death of a Matron was considered insignificant.

The young girl was buried near to where she had lived in the orphanage, her soul peaceful at last.

The priest kept silent, his vows chained him in irons. He spoke a few words to himself at the altar...

Nettleham Windmill: Looking at the old photograph of the windmill on page 46 in the spring 2015 edition of Nettleham News, I wondered whether readers might be interested in some of the ‘finds’ Gilly and I have made since living at ‘Mill House’.

20 years ago we moved in and, over a period of time, developed the garden during which we discovered some very interesting pieces!

The corn grinding wheel from the windmill stands at the entrance to the property and one of the two massive weight stones is located about 6 inches further down the garden - it would have been much further, but we nearly burned the clutch out trying to move it!

The second was buried with only a small area showing above ground. Gilly thought it would make a great addition to the rockery she was planning (for me) to build.

As she cleared the earth away, it became increasingly obvious that it was a little larger than expected. She buried it again!

However, that was not to be the last I heard of it ...

As you can see in the photograph on the facing page, I have fixed them to the outside brick wall of the bakehouse, now a barn for storage.

The original workers’ tea room of the bakehouse has some rather historic pictures of partially-clothed ‘girly’ newspaper cuttings pasted to the ceiling (not for reproduction in Nettleham News, of course!) but I did not feel I could remove them. (Gilly just says: “Hmmm!”).

Work continues, as you would expect of a house built in 1820.

There were a couple of old cypress trees that needed to come out. It was suggested diplomatically to me that a digger would be far more expedient than me at removing them … and whilst he was here he could also dig out that big stone ... … and scoop a bucket or two of earth out, so that I could create a pond in the front garden. Digger man came to find me, “You’d better come and have a look at this mate. There are two big slabs of stone and I think I know what they’re covering!”

It was the well that had supplied the windmill with water.

We found an experienced builder who built the outside of the well and created the slate roof for it. When I saw how deep it was, I contacted the Lincolnshire Police Diving Unit to ask if they would be interested to dive down our well on one of their training days. They took this unusual opportunity to experience entering a narrow space with all the equipment they have to wear (rather them than me!).

In the old photograph of the windmill, the building that can be seen in front of the tower and still visible today from Bishop’s Meadow, was the old bakery.

The ovens, although rusted, were still intact. As the end of the barn was being restored, I had to take out the old ovens but, wanting to maintain the history of the building, kept the main oven doors which I sent off to be shot blasted and powder coated.

The Summer Book Review Phyllis Maiden La Suite Francaise Irene Nemirovsky It is said that the first casualty of war is the truth. Despite this, I found this book to be brutally honest in its depiction of human failings and honour in enemy occupation.

The author herself (Russian born) lived in occupied France and wrote this during that time, leaving the manuscript for others to find. She died in a concentration camp just before her husband met the same fate.

Her children survived and it was her daughter who found the manuscript and took it to a publisher.

This is a family that enjoys every minute of life and everything to Pop is just ‘perfick’.

He treats everyone the same, be they civil servants, lords or vicars.

With their large family in the rambling Kent farmhouse, Pop and Ma drink from life to the full. Ma, according to H E Bates, ‘was almost two yards wide’.

They love their large brood of children passionately and despite his roguish ways, Pa has a heart of gold and always supports the underdog. You know that he will get out of every scrape and even people with prior prejudices will take pleasure from meeting him. He takes Charley the tax inspector into the bosom of his large, noisy family and nurtures him like everyone else.

As they say, this is a jolly good read.

The Garbage King

It portrays the terror and privations of several classes of the population fleeing occupied Paris and their fate. Some are selfish, some show their disdain for people beneath them and the fact they have to mix. The book is divided into two parts: ‘Storm in June’ telling of the initial evacuation and ‘Dolce’ telling of their lives in a village.

The shocking part is the way the German bombers fired on fleeing innocent citizens.

I first read this about ten years ago and picked it up again because a film has been recently released. The book also contains appendices which are best read first as they contain correspondence from the author at the time and her notes.

The Pop Larkin Chronicles including The Darling Buds of May

H E Bates Love him or hate him, Pop Larkin is a survivor and a wheeler and dealer. The Darling Buds of May was very well produced on television a long time ago, but I found the books laugh-out-loud funny.

Elizabeth Laird This award-winning author has spent many years living in Africa and speaks from first-hand experience.

Illustrated by Yosef Kebede, this book is suitable for older children and adults alike.

I found an extremely tatty copy in a second-hand book box in a Post Office, but it is available from the library.

It is a novel based on the true lives of two of Africa’s children. One boy is from the slums and the other is a runaway rich child, afraid of his bullying father. Dani, the other child, is sold to a farmer who is cruel and he manages to escape to the streets of Addis Abbaba.

They join up when hiding. A street gang takes them in and the book relates their survival methods.

They live on the edge of destitution and can only take each day as it comes, dodging the police and scavenging for food on garbage dumps and at the back of restaurants. They also find solace in finding and rearing a stray puppy.

Despite their harsh existence, they do find a level of warmth and companionship in the gang.

It made me realise how vulnerable are the street children of the world and what a fine way to show our children what their life is really like.

The story of these two boys stayed in my mind for a long time after I had finished the book.

The Secret Garden Frances Hodgson Burnett This is an old children’s classic, but still loved by adults and the young alike today.

It was first published in 1911.

Mary Lennox is sent home from India because she has lost her parents to cholera and is sent to her uncle’s house in the wilds of Yorkshire. Her uncle travels and she never meets him; instead she is looked after by a maid.

The story tells of her friendship with Dickon, the son of a servant, and their eventual entry to the secret garden.

The story is part fantasy with a robin even seeming to co-operate with her and helping her.

Despite being initially unhappy in her new home, Mary warms to the more lowly people in her life such as the gardener and the servant, Martha. She also comes to love nature and being outside.

This is a tale of triumph over adversity, particularly when she discovers the disabled boy, Colin. In those days, children with disabilities were frequently hidden away and there were very strange medical ideas about them.

With Mary’s help Colin thrives and... no, I won’t disclose the ending!

Even now, after many years, if I see a wooden door in a wall I wonder if there is a secret garden behind it …

Nettleham Mini Skate Park

At long last, the Mini Skate Park located at Mulsanne Park, Nettleham, is nearing completion. There is still work to do: safety fencing to separate users from the car park, finishing off the edges surrounding the base, erection of signage and possibly a bench for those merely watching the youngsters in action.

However, the major work is now complete and the equipment is already in use. None

of this would have been possible without real teamwork. The Parish Council kindly made the old (and long disused), Boules Court available and major funding was obtained from Veolia with some funding also coming from our District Councillors.

However, you, the residents also contributed mightily, thanks to the sterling efforts of Cheryl Tate and family. A huge THANK YOU to all who helped with this project - and there are many unsung

heroes - for having faith and helping to provide what we are certain will be a well-used additional outdoor facility for our village youngsters.

We are hoping to have a formal opening in June that will encompass all three of our recently installed facilities: the Mini Skate Park, the MUGA and the Basketball Court.

Beckside Pre-School We would like to share some photographs of the children and parents of our pre-school as we went on a Spring Walk earlier this year.

The children had fun spotting new growth and watching the ducks on the village Beck. We listened carefully to the birds as they were active in the trees and we spotted horse hoof-prints in the mud!

We collected sticks, feathers, tree bark and leaves that we took back to pre-school to make a raft and to help create a book about our walk.

Some of the children demonstrated an awareness of road safety by listening carefully for vehicles when we needed to cross the road. When we got back to pre-school, we helped to make bird fat-cakes to encourage the birds to come to our gardens.

Beckside Goes Live!

We have gone online at Beckside, adapting an educational software system called Tapestry which enables us to record a child’s progress, creating records of observations instantly, adding notes and images, linking to EYFS assessments and having them immediately available to parents. Parents can then view and comment on new entries and even add their own, keeping them involved in a partnership as their child develops.

This is working really well and parents are telling us how much they enjoy using the new system and how it is an excellent tool to link pre-school and home.

New Facilities at Nettleham Bowls Club At Nettleham Bowls Club we have put up with poor quality toilets for several years and now, at long last, we can wash our hands in a brand spanking new facility.

The project was made possible in part by members’ fundraising efforts, but also by virtue of a magnificent £1,080.00 donated by the Local Councillor Initiative Fund, courtesy of Cllr Malcolm Leaning and Cllr Giles McNeill.

Local builder Paul Maplethorpe and his team did a fantastic job in demolishing and rebuilding walls and refitting new basins, pans and urinals in a short time, with no inconvenience to the club.

The new window blinds were very kindly donated by local company Butterfly Blinds.

These new facilities will come into their own during the coming season, when we host the Lincolnshire County Bowls Finals, Saturday and Sunday 18 and 19 July 2015.

There will be bowling both days, all day,

Prestigious Award for Local Care Home Nettleham News is always pleased to learn of successes achieved by the businesses which advertise in its pages and here, Willan House residential care home at Stainfied is featured (advertisement page 12) A local care home, dedicated to providing the best possible care for all of its residents right up until the end of their lives, has been recognised with a major national award.

Willan House, Stainfield was among 15 homes from across the UK to achieve the success in winning a Quality Hallmark Award from the National Gold Standards Framework (GSF) Centre, the UK’s largest provider of training in end of life care. Staff from the home received the award at special ceremony at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in London. Willan House is one of only two residential care homes in the county of Lincolnshire to be accredited for their End of Life Care.

For everyone at Willan House this is great recognition for the efforts all the staff have put in to ensure that all residents receive dignified and person-centred care right up to the end of their life.

Willan House is a small, privately owned rural residential home and to achieve the ‘Commend’ status at the first attempt is a credit to the staff.

The Hub: A Brand New Concept So far this is what we have envisioned…

The Vision The vision for The Hub is to create a space that provides a service in Nettleham for ‘all’ ages to visit. It is a central location in the ‘heart’ of the village that enhances access to a wide range of facilities and services. It will become a thriving centre of activity and interest.

My name is Jaime Oliver and I have some very exciting news to share with Nettleham News readers. Since September 2014, I have been working with Lincoln County Council to find ways to bring a Community Hub to the village.

This has been my dream for the last 6 years. Nettleham is such a friendly, welcoming place with so many amenities, wouldn’t it be lovely if we could just knit all of Nettleham’s attributes together into one main Hub, which everyone could access?

Seven weeks ago, I put in an application to save the library and this week it has been accepted. This is very exciting news for Nettleham - not only do we get to keep our library, but we get to find ways to make the building multi-functional.

The Hub will aim to provide a viable and sustainable income that can be fed back into projects that benefit the community. It will also become a place to educate people to become more sustainable, focus on the environment, and improve their health and welfare.

The aim is to work in partnership with all existing amenities in Nettleham and bring them together. The premises will have a minimal impact on the environment, be sustainable and also accommodate outdoor and indoor pursuits.

Phase One Café and Healthy Eating: Alongside the library, a café will offer comfort and relaxation during open hours.

This will be a place where family and friends can gather to enhance their library experience in a safe and comfortable space. The Hub is to work in partnership with all local amenities and will be renting out space to the local Tea Cosy café. The Hub will work to promote well-being and health, educating its customers to eat more healthily, in a fun and exciting way.

The Hub will take over the building in October 2015 and it will be run by volunteers. I will be co-ordinator for The Hub and if anyone would like to be involved, my contact details are at the end of this article.

A questionnaire was sent out to Nettleham residents in December 2014. The response we got back indicated what was needed in the village and so a proposal was put in place for the library building.

Meetings have taken place in the library to see how we could move forward with these ideas and a committee has been formed.

Toddler Morning: The aim is to provide a toddler morning session every morning, with the exception of Wednesdays, when a toddler session is already provided at the Methodist church. The café will be accessible during these times.

Seasonal Activities: A variety of different pilot activities will also be provided throughout the year to encourage people through the door and to widen their understanding of the world and the environment in which they live.

Breakfast Meetings: The Hub is to open alongside other businesses, activities and pursuits in and around Nettleham. To strengthen partnership working, monthly coffee/breakfast mornings will be held in The Hub with other businesses and organisations,

for the Village of Nettleham to help provide an improved service for the community. There will be an opportunity to set up membership for a ‘Local Exchange Trading System’ where The Hub and other local businesses could benefit from a range of free services.

to encourage and build confidence so that older people start to mix with the younger generation through volunteering, and experiment with different ways to interactively share their knowledge, wisdom and life experiences and vice versa.

also mixing with this age group and vice versa, learning key skills such as mutual respect.

This trading system would be about local businesses sharing their trade with The Hub and others, eg if I need a painter and decorator I can ask them to do painting for us free of charge and in return we could offer free advertising. In this way a strong interactive social network will be established over a period of time.

Working with Schools: It would be great to find creative ways to work in partnership with the local schools.

These may include:

Art and Music: The Hub will be used as a base for exhibitions and displays once a month by local artists.

These artists will be funded to provide projects for the villagers. There is also scope to provide a setting for local, young talented musicians to play in the coffee/library area as family entertainment whilst having a coffee during evening hours.

Office Space: To improve the financial viability of The Hub, there is scope for the three extra offices to be rented out to local businesses, the aim being that these businesses follow the ethos of The Hub and assist in generating additional income.

Hub Co-ordinator: The Hub will have one paid member of staff, who will co-ordinate activities, organise fundraising events and dedicate time to The Hub project as a whole.

The committee/trustees/directors will oversee the strategic running of The Hub and, with other volunteers, will help to run activities on the ground.

In the previous year, 90 volunteers stepped forward to put their names down to help save Nettleham library.

I would be very interested for those people to email me with their contact details if they would like to volunteer again (my email address is at the end of this article).

Intergenerational Projects: The number of older people in Nettleham is relatively high (60% over 45 years; 40% over the age of 60 years).

Working with this large section of the village community, it would be great

Phase Two Charity/Community Shop: This will help to generate an income for The Hub. Also villagers who have no source of income, ie lone parents, parents looking after children at home, school gap year, etc, can come and participate in creative crafts: making bags, weaving baskets, making flowers and jewellery, etc, from recycled materials.

All quality items would be retailed in a charity shop. The trader will expect a 50% return profit and the other 50% will go back into The Hub. There is also potential scope to promote these goods through internet online forums to expand our potential customer base.

Recycling: As an environmentally friendly building, recycling would play a large role for the Community Hub. We would explore opportunities as to how we can generate a revenue from this, eg recycling batteries and printer cartridges, textiles, etc.

Village Events: Regular fundraising events will be co-ordinated through The Hub and its volunteers, generating revenue.

Phase Three The Youth Hub: In the consultation stage this was frequently flagged up, with a growing concern that the secondary school age group may get ‘lost’ in society and lose significance within the community.

Additional Ideas Other ideas will use the garage space as a youth facility. This will be similar to a youth club, but will offer services that will empower their status and get them involved in the community. It would be nice to see older volunteers

There are a number of other ideas that have been suggested that we will also explore to bring services and income into The Hub. ● Renting space out for conferences and meetings during low-peak times ● Introducing education, training and courses centred around biodiversity and green issues ● Education focussing on health, wellbeing, parenting and childcare ● General information portal which includes advice, guidance and signposting ● Creative ways to advertise other businesses and local groups through social media, hubs, website, etc, that could help generate an income for The Hub. I do hope you have found this article very informative and are now equally as excited about this new venture as I am!

The library will be open for a minimum of 6 hours a week starting October 2015 and we will eventually, through time, find ways to increase that to 7 days a week. However, this can only be achieved if we have enough volunteers.

Report Back from your local District Councillors “This will be my final contribution as your District Councillor” says Malcolm Leaning, “Thank you for allowing me to communicate in this way”.

Your Council Tax West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) has the responsibility of collecting ALL your Council Tax each year.

They then distribute most of the money collected to Lincolnshire County Council, The Lincolnshire Police Authority and Nettleham Parish Council - retaining only a portion for their own expenditure.

The capital programme is subject to a range of factors and subsequent business case and detailed approvals.

The decision means that from April, residents will continue to pay the 2013/14 rate, meaning Council Tax has been frozen in four out of five years.

The major capital investment programmes for 2015/16 include: ●

Each Authority precepts WLDC for the money they require and WLDC has no say on how much this is and must collect it from you on their behalf.

You will see what these sums are on your own Council Tax bill and the percentage that they have increased, or decreased, from last year.

●

WLDC Tax Freeze The amount you pay is to remain unchanged for residents from the West Lindsey part of your Council Tax this year. WLDC has announced it will again not increase its share of the Council Tax for 2015/16.

The freeze was announced in the council’s budget report, submitted to council on Monday 2 March 2015, which also included plans for more than £9 million of capital investment towards major projects.

Land and property: £1.55m Maximising our assets and investing in land and property to increase delivery for both capital and revenue returns.

Housing related schemes: £5.8m Working in partnership with other housing providers in meeting housing needs such as single person occupancy, reducing the number of empty homes, affordable housing and provision for the aging population.

E-accessibility: £735k Improving service efficiency and utilising new technologies to help people get on-line to access services and information.

Supporting communities: £355k Continuing support for community projects through our three funding stream, flood alleviation scheme, and supporting heritage schemes.

The council has managed to achieve £1.5 million of savings at a time when the budget allocation from central government is drastically reducing each year. However, the council is not complacent, as it still needs to find £2.5m over the next 4 years to achieve a sustainable budget position which is not reliant on a Government grant.

Purdah Purdah is a pre-election period in the United Kingdom, specifically the time between an announced election and the final election results. The time period prevents central and local 62

government from making any announcements about new or controversial government initiatives (such as modernisation initiatives or administrative and legislative changes) which could perhaps be seen to be advantageous to any candidates or parties in the forthcoming election.

For the 2015 General and local elections, purdah began on Monday 30 March 2015.

While this precludes any potentially controversial decision-making during purdah, one exception is ‘Planning’ and the WLDC planning committee continued to meet during this period to determine submitted planning applications.

While the composition of the planning committee reflects the elected political composition of the District Council, legally the 11 members meet as a ‘non-political’ ‘quasi judicial’ body to determine planning applications representing, not their wards, but the District Council.

Councillors serving on the committee, and any substitutes replacing them, have had to receive special training.

Nettleham has had both of its DC members on the planning committee for several years.

Elections WLDC’s 37 elected Councillors all reached the end of their 4-year term of office 3 days after 7 May 2015.

36 Councillors will have been elected on 7 May to represent the 20 wards in West Lindsey with newly-defined boundaries. Some wards will have 3 Councillors, some 2 Councillors and some 1 Councillor to represent them.

Editor On behalf of readers of Nettleham News magazine, I should like sincerely to thank Alf Frith for his long and faithful service to Nettleham Parish Council.

Alf is standing down this year, having served an amazing total of 50 years on Nettleham Parish Council, 22 years of which were in the role of Chairman.

A well-known and respected member of our community, I’m sure readers will join me in wishing Alf all the very best for the future.

Born in Bolton, Lancashire, in 1937, his earliest ‘gardening’ memories are of his own childhood garden and especially the dahlias, chrysanthemums and roses that were grown by his father.

Interest in plants began by chance when, as a keen birdwatcher, Roy developed an eye for native flora which soon became a passion, as he travelled by bicycle, bus, train, and sometimes on foot around Lancashire and beyond. On leaving school at 15, he began his unplanned gardening career with Bolton Parks Department.

Both wild and cultivated plants came to dominate his life. Two years of national service took Roy to Malaya enriching his experience of tropical plants, and a plant collecting expedition to Nepal in 1971, strengthened his love for the world’s high places and their plants. He continues to travel at every opportunity, but never neglects his love for British gardens and our native flora.

Two years as a gardening student at the Cambridge Botanic Garden followed by 18 years with the Hillier Nurseries in Hampshire, gave him the perfect platform from which to further his career.

Roy’s professional freelance career began in 1980 and since then he has enjoyed gardens and wild places, as well as writing and lecturing on the subject and meeting people who enjoy gardening.

In 2011 the Institute of Horticulture awarded him The President’s Award.

“My own garden in Hampshire, is filled with plants of all kinds and is a perennial source of challenge, surprise, excitement and relaxation to me” he says.

Roy Lancaster has been a very active President of the Hardy Plant Society for many years and now is your chance to meet him here in Lincolnshire.

Brown Hares Hares, mysterious and often elusive, are beautiful creatures.

Their eyes often appear to be amber, depending on the light, and they have very supple, lithe bodies and huge back legs to aid them when they run, often at 70mph, when being chased.

They do not live in large groups like rabbits, but are often solitary and unlike rabbits they do not burrow and will sleep in a depression pressed into soil or grass, often lying out even in bad weather.

Unfortunately hares are persecuted and hunted. They were possibly brought to England by the Romans probably as food and have gained a hold in our countryside. I frequently used to see them in early morning light on the flat lands between Horncastle and Boston when I commuted. They just seem to appear on a ploughed field from nowhere and just as soon will disappear again.

I have to say I have never seen them around this area.

The pressures on these animals are enormous, particularly as farmers are allowed to shoot them if they pose a threat and become a nuisance.

This seems sad when their numbers have dropped so drastically. Heavy farm machinery can prove to be a hare’s downfall, particularly as the young ones tend to freeze in one spot when threatened.

The increasing use of plastic sheeting to cover the surface of fields also limits their food, as they are grassland animals.

Stewardship is improving on some farms and the number of hares is increasing. Some farmers are now beginning to think that hares should not be shot and are increasingly growing natural wildflower borders to their fields so that the vulnerable young hares (leverets) can find shelter from predators, such as raptors.

However, it is known that some farmers arrange hare shoots, when large numbers can unfortunately be shot for ‘sport’ in a single day.

Everyone knows about ‘boxing’ hares (see photograph right) and it is often mistakenly thought that it is two males boxing as rivals for a female, when it is in fact a male and a female. The fight can be very violent as the hares have spurs on their front legs and can tear at each other’s fur. The saying ‘mad March hare’ arose from the sight of a group of hares getting agitated over a female. A group of young bucks (males) will gather around a female (doe) at breeding time. Then they certainly do look totally ‘mad’ and will frantically circle her wrestling among themselves for her attention.

Possibly the worst threat to this animal is illegal hare coursing a barbaric sport perpetrated by organised gangs who often travel from a large city to the countryside. The hares are chased down by dogs and meet a horrible death. If hare coursers are caught, then at the moment there are no custodial sentences. This is being worked on and hopefully punishments will become more severe in future years. The number of convictions for hare coursing has gone up in the last few years.

Young hares (leverets) are different from rabbits in that they are born with their eyes fully open and are much stronger. Does can have up to three litters in a year and historically hares were often associated with fertility and believed to be the earthly incarnation of the goddess Eostre, the goddess of fertility - hence the word oestrogen.

In years gone by, hares could not be mentioned at sea, as superstitious sailors considered them to be very unlucky.

Witches were also said to be able to turn themselves into hares and take milk directly from the cows in the fields. Much of this must surely stem from the fact that hares can behave rather strangely and were frequently only seen at night.

Mary Webb’s famous book Precious Bane, is the story of Prue. She has a hare lip (hare shotten) and believes that her mother’s path was crossed by a hare when she was pregnant.

Poor Prue is considered by the village folk to be a witch because of her affliction.

Chinese and Japanese folklore tells us of the ‘hare in the moon’ and indeed the outline of a hare can be seen on the surface of the moon.

NETTLEHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Chairman’s Annual Report 1 April 2014 - 31 March 2015 age is apparently not a barrier to its use!), but this area will still need to be shared with the Tennis Club at times; the Parish Council no longer charges residents wanting to play tennis on the ‘public court’.

As Chairman of Nettleham Parish Council, I submit to the Parish Meeting for consideration my Annual Report for the period 1 April 2014 - 31 March 2015, being another very busy one for the Parish Council. I set out below a summary of the Council’s main areas of activity during that period.

1. Neighbourhood Plan The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee formalised the Draft Neighbourhood Plan and sought views from residents on the Strategy Plan proposed. To assist in the consultation with residents, a public consultation meeting/drop-in sessions were organised on 25 June and 4 & 5 July 2014 respectively at the Old School, Nettleham.

These sessions allowed residents to have face-to-face discussions with committee members on the planning policies proposed.

An Extraordinary Parish Council meeting was held on 2 October, when the draft of Nettleham’s Neighbourhood Plan was presented to the Parish Council for approval. The Plan had been in production for over two years and was ready to be sent out for a six-week statutory consultation period by Statutory Consultees and of course, residents.

Following the six-week consultation (which took place in December/January) some 50 responses had been received and over 80% of residents’ comments had been positive and supported the Neighbourhood Plan. Responses had also been received from Natural England, Anglian Water and West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) as statutory consultees. The Planning Consultant that was brought in by the Parish Council to undertaken a ‘Health Check’ on the Plan produced a report and was very complimentary, stating that the plan was well written and contained important policies relating to the development and use of land. The Ecological Strategy prepared by Nettleham Woodland Trust and the Strategic Environmental Assessment that accompanied the Plan were particularly commended.

The final draft of the plan is expected to be completed by the end of April 2015.

produced and submitted with the submission copy of the Plan to WLDC (by the end of May) for the Regulation 16 consultation stage of the process (ie a 2nd Round of Statutory Consultation at the instant of WLDC).

Fundraising for the proposed Mini Skate Park, to be sited on the old Boules Court at Mulsanne Park has been very successful.

We have received major grant funding from Veolia Environmental Trust, grants from our two WLDC Cllrs: Malcolm Leaning and Giles McNeill, plus excellent input from local fundraising, including a raffle at the Nettleham Carnival in July 2014 which raised a total of £423.50. The concrete base has recently been laid and the equipment will be installed in April/May 2015 (see page 56).

4. The Ray Sellars Community Award

The Neighbourhood Plan still has two major hurdles to jump before it is ready to be put to a Referendum (probably in February/March 2016), namely: (1) the Regulation 16 Consultation (see above) scheduled for June/July and (2) ‘Examination’ by an Independent Planning Inspector (in Autumn 2015), which may involve the holding of a Local Inquiry into certain aspects of the Plan, but that will be a matter for the Inspector. Nevertheless, we are very hopeful that the Plan will be in place within the next 12 months

This award was created to celebrate and acknowledge all the hard work undertaken

by Cllr Ray Sellars, who passed away in 2012. At the 2014 Annual Parish Meeting, the Chairman, together with Mrs June Sellars and family, were pleased to present the first recipient of the Award to Mr Phil McGuinness in recognition of his considerable contribution to the village with his work on the Carnival Committee as well as the Village Hall Committee.

Phil kept a replica of the Award for his mantelpiece and the original was inscribed and kept in the cabinet at the Old School.

2. Bishop’s Palace Site

5. Change of Parish Councillors

Work continued on the project during 2014/15. The planting of seven native commemorative trees in Bishop’s Meadow was undertaken on Saturday 21 March 2015 (see pages 36/37).

The Parish Council was saddened at the news of Cllr Allan Bonney’s death in October 2014. Allan took a keen interest in all aspects of Parish Council business and we appreciate his valuable contribution over the years.

The management of the Bishop’s Palace site will be passed to the Parish Council’s Property Committee from the 1 April 2015.

The Parish Council would like to formally thank the Bishop’s Palace Working Group, led by Cllr John Evans, for all their efforts on this project; they should be justifiably proud of their achievement.

3. Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and Mini Skate Park The new multi-use games area was installed on the multi-use/tennis court at Mulsanne Park and has proven to be popular. This is a much-needed facility for the young people of our village (although 68

Richard has demonstrated a willingness to become actively involved in various aspects of the Council’s business.

6. Nettleham Library Following the outcome of the Judicial Review in July, Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) undertook a further supplementary consultation calling for alternative proposals on how LCC can deliver a comprehensive and efficient library service, to comply with its statutory duty, which is affordable and within its budget of c£4M.

Responses were to be put to a meeting of the LCC Executive Committee for determination in February 2015.

Members of the Parish Council met with representatives of Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) in August and were impressed with their professionalism and experience in running library services in other areas of the country. GLL submitted a proposal to LCC to run all 45 libraries in Lincolnshire and the Parish Council agreed to support their bid as we consider that they could offer a very credible alternative to LCC’s preferred model, as outlined in their original consultation document.

However, LCC decided in February it would continue to seek voluntary groups to run the 30 libraries it no longer wishes to manage, but would continue to run and manage the 15 main libraries in the county.

7. Planning At the time of the preparation of this Report, 41 planning applications had been received during the year (April 2014 March 2015) relating to all aspects of development in the village, but primarily extensions and improvements. During that period there were 2 refusals of planning permission by WLDC. However, in this context the Parish Council’s attention has largely been focused on our Emerging Neighbourhood Plan (see paragraph 1 above) and in particular responding to various planning applications which are at variance with the Plan. An Extraordinary Parish Council meeting took place in October to discuss two planning applications submitted by Truelove Construction Ltd, which were at that time contrary to our aspirations for future development in the village.

These applications covered two sites in Nettleham, (off Scothern Road and Sudbrooke Lane), for a total of 158 new houses. The Sudbrooke Lane site was refused and the WLDC Planning Committee took our Emerging Neighbourhood Plan policies fully into account when making their decision. The planning application in respect of Scothern Road has subsequently been substantially revised and at our March meeting the Parish Council decided not to object to the same.

Beal Homes organised a drop-in session on 26 January at the Old School to advertise its potential plans to develop land off Larch Avenue, and as a consequence, some dismay and confusion has arisen.

The Parish Council made it clear that it had no prior notice of these plans and it had, in fact, had very little discussion with the parties involved, except in connection with the formulation of the Neighbourhood

Plan, when a smaller part of the area of land involved was identified as a possible site for approximately 50 dwellings, as opposed to the 200 outlined in Beal Homes proposals. The Council’s commitment to our Emerging Neighbourhood Plan has not changed in any way and the Council will strongly object to a planning application for some 200 houses of this site if it is submitted to WLDC. 8. Parish Office Relocation It has been felt for some time that the working conditions in the current Parish Office at the Old School are extremely cramped and inadequate for our purposes.

The Chief Constable, Mr Neil Rhodes, with the agreement of the Police & Crime Commissioner, very kindly offered the lease of the Police Office on Scothern Road and the Parish Council considered that this would be an ideal solution. The lease will be in place by April 2015 and the necessary alterations/improvements of the new Parish Office will be undertaken and it is anticipated that the Office will move to its new location in July. Space will still be made available for the local policing team as required.

9. Meetings of the Council The Council met on 13 occasions during the past year; its Committees, namely the Property Committee met on 7 occasions, plus 2 Village Inspections and the Fieldpaths Advisory Committee met on 2 occasions. In addition, 3 Council Members attended meetings of the Mulsanne Park Users Committee (MPUC), which met 4 times. The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee meets at regular intervals.

The Planning Liaison Committee, which meets as and when required, continues to monitor all planning applications on behalf of the village. Attached at Appendix A is a schedule showing the attendance of Parish Councillors at all relevant Council and Committee meetings.

10. The Old School The demand for hiring of the Old School rooms has increased, with several new organisations now using them on a regular basis and a number of wedding receptions were held there during the year.

The Hall floors were in need of some maintenance and were refurbished in December 2014. Also many of the chairs in the Large Hall were suffering from wear and tear and have been replaced. The new chairs are much lighter to move around and the fabric is more resilient.

11. Mulsanne Park The sports field continues to be extensively used by the football, tennis and cricket 69

clubs and is maintained to a high standard.

The sports pavilion is used regularly for art classes.

Safety concerns were raised regarding the football stand and it was considered necessary to remove the seats, as a number of them had been vandalised and were unsafe to use. However, boarding to the base of the seating areas was installed, which would allow supporters to continue to watch matches during inclement weather.

12. Bill Bailey’s Memorial Playing Field The playing field also continues to be extensively used and the Council seeks to maintain this facility to a high standard.

During the year the Council undertook maintenance works to the ‘Fort’ play equipment.

13. Rugby Club WLDC has approved an application from the Rugby Club for a temporary extension of its club opening hours on Fridays and Saturdays from 11.30pm to 1.00am; however this is to be reviewed after 12 months. An event management plan has to be produced by the club, detailing what measures will be put in place to reduce noise and nuisance from amplified music, etc, how the car park will be utilised and how complaints from neighbours will be addressed.

14. Annual Audit Return 2013/14 The Parish Council’s External Audit of the Annual Return for 2013/14 has been completed. A copy of the Accounting Statement is attached at Appendix B. 15. Parish Precept 2015/16 At the November Parish Council meeting, the Parish Precept for 2015/16 was set at £123,651 which is an increase of 3.6%.

The increase in the Precept of £4,300 would amount to approximately £2.50 per household per year, which the Council considers represents good value for money to residents.

16. Donations The Council agreed to set up a Grant Application Scheme for the award of funding from the Council’s Section 137 monies. Over the past year, grants have been given to various charitable and local organisations. These include Lincoln & Lindsey Blind Society (£100) and British Legion (Poppy Wreath).

Nettleham Parish Council: Chairman’s Annual Report 17. Village Facilities (i) Best Kept Village Competition: 2014 Sadly, Nettleham was unsuccessful in this year’s competition. We were entered in the Past Winners’ Category for the first time and were placed joint fourth with Freiston.

This is a tough section of the competition as large villages compete with much smaller communities, but we would like to thank everyone for their efforts in contributing to a cared-for and welcoming environment. We would also like to thank the local shops, pubs and businesses for their wonderful floral displays. (ii) Best Kept Village Competition: 50th Anniversary We are in the process of producing a plaque to mark Nettleham’s significant achievements in this competition over the last 50 years. The plaque will be sited at the Washdyke Lane entrance to the village under the Nettleham sign, to replace the existing out-of-date signage. (iii) Tree Maintenance The Parish Council’s annual tree maintenance programme has included the regular maintenance of all the sites under the Parish Council’s control. The Council also agreed to set aside a small budget for amenity and safety work to be carried out to trees and shrubbery on highway verges. (iv) Flower Tub Sponsorship The Parish Council is very grateful for the continued sponsorship of the tubs on the Church Street Bridge by Rudies Roots.

We were also very pleased to have received sponsorship for the flower tubs in Vicarage Lane. Many thanks to Nettleham Bowls Club and other anonymous donors for their generosity.

18. Maintenance of Highways & Traffic Matters (i) Traffic Management: Village Centre Some amendments have been made to the proposed parking restrictions in the centre of the village following consultation with residents. LCC’s Highways & Transportation Committee approved the Traffic Regulation Order in March 2015 and it is expected to come into force in the next six months. (ii) Community Speed Watch Initiative Regrettably, there have been some instances of speeding in the village; we have to share the use of a mobile Speed Indicator Device (SID) with at least six other villages, so our turn does not come round very often. The Parish Council was notified of a new initiative by Lincolnshire Road

Safety Partnership with regard to monitoring traffic speed. Consequently, we have requested Passive Speed Notices to be sited at appropriate points in the village these are highly visible signs to make drivers aware of the speed limit and the need to check their speed. (iii) Roads and Paths The Council is very conscious of the poor state of many of the roads and pavements in the village, but I am pleased to report that some repair work has taken place, including the top dressing to areas of part of Washdyke Lane and short lengths of pavement have been resurfaced.

The Council continues to press LCC Highways on these matters and regular reports are made at Parish Council meetings by our County Councillor, Cllr Mrs Jackie Brockway.

19. Fieldpaths Advisory Committee The Fieldpaths Committee (Chair: Sara Bright), is an advisory committee of the Parish Council and meets twice a year in February and September. The Committee discuss fieldpaths and bridleways within the parish and also organise a Christmas/ New Year Village Walk and continues to monitor all aspects of the various fieldpaths/bridleways around the village.

There was a good turnout for the village walk, which was a very pleasant ramble in the winter sunshine, followed by a welcome hot drink and mince pies at the Old School afterwards.

(iii) The Council wishes to formally thank Mr Peter (Pete) Malone (Facilities Assistant), Mr John Hardcastle (Village Handyman) and Mrs Louise Bromfield (Accounts Clerk & Secretary to the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee) for their continuing work on the Council’s behalf. Sadly, Pete has not been well since last November and naturally we wish him well and trust that he will soon see an improvement in his health.

22. Acknowledgements (i) I should like to record the Council’s appreciation for the valuable advice that it received during the year from Mr Roger Buttery, our Hon Finance Advisor.

I should also like to record the Council’s appreciation to Ms M Odell and Mrs K Locker for undertaking the role of Flood Wardens and Mr Bill Ball and his team of volunteers for all their work in maintaining and improving Vicar’s Wood. 20. Cllr Alf Frith It is timely for me to make reference to the fact that this year Cllr Alf Frith will have completed 50 years’ service on the Parish Council; this includes two periods as Chairman, totalling some 22 years. This is a tremendous achievement and I am certain that the whole village would wish to thank Alf for his enormous contribution to the life of our community over half a century.

Alf is stepping down from the Council after the forthcoming Election (7 May) and we wish him and Margaret a well-deserved retirement from Parish Council business.

21. Parish Council Staff (i) The Clerk, Miss Julia Finn, continues to do a first class job as our Clerk; she is very hard working, committed and professional.

It has been another busy year for the office. (ii) Mr Fred Stanford took on the role of Facilities Manager in August 2014 and has fitted into the role extremely well.

The Poetry Page Poetry Winner Following the announcement in the winter 2014 edition of Nettleham News and the subsequent article on page 44 of the spring 2015 edition, the result of the “Lincoln’s Great” poetry competition, organised by the Lincolnshire Live Poets’ Society has been declared.

The winner is Valerie Venables of Moulton, Lincolnshire and her poem appears below:

Lincoln’s Great!

From each approach, the soaring towers, the fabric of a fairy tale, the ancient masons’ miracle, and brave pilots’ guide.

Upon the hill of striking hours, Cathedral, Roman arch and castle.

Magna Carta, a pinnacle of progress and pride.

Below the hill of bells and choirs, shouting out yet another tale, the traffic’s hum and the footfalls, words, a swelling tide.

The bakeries and coffee bars, flower stalls in the market hall, Into the mind a million Sensations can slide.

Students carrying books, shoppers, businessfolk, visitors, one and all, sampling the atmosphere, and then finding Lincoln’s GREAT. Valerie Venables

A Children’s Poem

The Painted Horse The Painted Horse on the painted shelf.

Stood with the pixies and little elves.

He did’nt mind their jokes and jibes.

From them he had nought to hide.

High above the shelf he stood.

Haughty, proud, strong and good.

His painted gloss of black and white His saddle shining in the light.

The naughty elves and pixies tried.

Taking three steps backward.

I looked the man in the eye.

Craftily smiled, catching my hand.

Something sinister amid the sly.

Winged darkness a crying out.

Gasping for breath falling falling.

Down, down, I awoke startled.

I shivered sunlight filled the room.

Sighs, the world beckons still.
