Read Nettleham News online at: www.nettleham.info Welcome to Nettleham News Here we are at the start of another year and it doesn’t seem 30 years ago that the very first edition of our village magazine Nettleham News was published!

Yes, in spring 1983, the first edition, comprising 18 mostly typewritten pages and stapled together in the left-hand margin, was distributed in the village.

Having been part of the magazine since its inception, I am proud to have been associated with its development over the years into the magazine with which everyone is so familiar today.

I do hope you continue to find the contents interesting, informative and perhaps sometimes amusing. If there is anything you would like to see included this year, do let me know and if you feel like submitting something for publication, do send it in for consideration - news, articles, short stories, poems, opinions, reviews, photographs, cartoons, jokes the list is endless!

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the local businesses whose paid advertisements enable the production of our village magazine and I would urge readers to use their products and services whenever possible.

Please don’t forget to mention Nettleham News when responding to any of the advertisements - this way the businesses know that their advertisements work.

Best Kept Village Competition Last year saw a significant milestone in the history of this annual competition, which has now been running for 50 years.

As a winner in its category for a number of years over this period, Nettleham, together with Tealby, has been presented with a special commemorative bench to mark this notable achievement (see page 23).

Bishops’ Palace Site Work continues to develop this historic heritage site in the heart of Nettleham into an attractive amenity for the village and on Saturday 16 March, there is going to be a community tree planting event from 10.00am - 12 noon, when you can come along (with your spade of course!) and assist in planting the young trees in Bishops Meadow (see centre pages 36/37).

Do come along in warm clothing and wellies (it’s going to be muddy!) and take part in this community event.

You, your family, or perhaps even a special-interest group in the village to which you belong, may wish to plant a commemorative tree, or provide a commemorative bench in this attractive new village amenity.

If you think you may be interested, there is a special form on page 37 which should be completed and returned to the Parish Council office to register your interest now.

However, it should be noted that the planting of commemorative trees and installation of commemorative benches will not take place until later in the year and may even extend into future years.

This site is now developing into a delightful rural amenity which generations of future residents, together with visitors to the village, will be able to enjoy.

Concessionary Travel Pass Renewal For those readers who possess a WLDC Concessionary Travel Pass, these are due for renewal in March and April - so don’t forget to update yours! (see page 68).

Talking of public transport, in response to a request from a reader, timetables for buses which serve Nettleham are included in this edition of the magazine. I trust these are correct, but as you know, these things are rather subject to change at short notice! (see page 13).

New High Leas Distributor Many thanks to all those readers who contacted me following the appeal for a new distributor for the magazine in the High Leas area of the village.

The new distributor, Mrs Anne Jones, will now deliver Nettleham News in that neighbourhood and the names of other readers, who offered to deliver magazines, have been put on file for possible contact in the future.

Prize Puzzles There are two competitions in this edition for readers to enter and win a crisp ten-pound note if their entry is the first correct solution to be drawn.

The first is a traditional crossword on page 27 and the second is something a bit different - a code for you to crack in order to solve the puzzle on page 29.

So settle down in your favourite armchair with a cup of tea and a sharp pencil and have a go!

And finally...

I usually have great difficulty in squeezing in all the material sent in for publication, but for some strange reason, there were several small spaces left in this edition of the magazine.

I was quite pleased, as it has enabled me to rummage around in the ‘Humour’ folder and do a bit of early spring-cleaning amongst the plethora of humorous items which have accumulated over time.

Having discarded the rather more risqué items, I hope some of those which I have included here bring a smile or two.

Parish Council News As we anticipate the new shoots of spring, which are hopefully just around the corner and we are getting ready to put away our warm winter garments, the Parish Council quarterly news appears once more, totally unaffected by weather or climate.

The Bishops Palace Site By the time this article is published, the Lincolnshire fencing around the site will have been completed and the new gateway: the ‘Prince’s Gate’, will have been installed between the Scheduled Ancient Monument area and the pastoral area, now known as the Bishops Meadow. Work compiling and producing interpretation panels, which will be installed on both the ‘Bishops Gate’ lych gate to the High Street and the ‘Prince’s Gate’, is currently being undertaken.

A community tree planting morning has been organised for Saturday 16 March 2013 and anyone wishing to assist is asked to meet at the Junior School at 10.00am and please bring a spade and wear suitable footwear and clothing. A separate article has been produced regarding this matter (see pages 36/37).

Small Parish Council Grants The Council has been pleased to approve three grants under the Council’s scheme.

These were: to All Saints Church to help with the costs of a replacement part for the church clock, to Nettleham Twinning Association to assist in the hosting of an event during our twin town of Mulsanne’s visit to Nettleham in April 2013 and to Nettleham LIVES towards the costs of meetings and training sessions.

Potential Skate Park As residents will be aware, this project has been on-going for some time. A small working group was set up in 2011 to help in making progress on a potential suitable site and the necessary funding required.

An article and questionnaire were included in the winter edition of Nettleham News requesting residents’ feedback on this project, from which we received 13 responses (10 in support and 3 against).

We also received a 240-name petition supporting the project (organised by 11-year-old Ben Tate, whom we thank for his time and efforts). At the 22 January 2013 Parish Council meeting the project was discussed at length and details of the work undertaken by the Working Group, the identified sites and the results of the feedback questionnaire were given.

The Parish Council agreed that none of the identified sites were truly fit for purpose;

Parish Precept for 2012/13 At the Parish Council’s Budget Meeting (30 October 2012), the Clerk submitted a proposed budget for 2012/13 with a zero increase on the Parish Precept (£114,886).

However, during the course of the meeting it was felt that inflation needed to be taken into account regarding the Council’s ring-fenced capital reserves. It was resolved at that meeting (and ratified at the 19 December 2012 Council meeting) that the precept be increased by £1,750 to a total precept of £116,636. This represents an increase in the Precept of 1.5% compared with the current year, which equates to an extra £1.10 per household per year.

Village Boundary Planters The Council’s Property Committee had raised concerns regarding the maintenance and appearance of the boundary planters.

It was agreed that the planters would be removed and suitable spring/autumn bulbs be planted in place of the planters. The Council wished to thank Mr Terry Wigsell for all his efforts in organising the planters and for maintaining and watering the planters in the past; Mr Crowther for fabricating and donating the planters and Rudies Roots for providing and planting all the plants.

however, confirmation would be sought from the Rugby Club that an area of land would be set aside for a skate park in the future. In the meantime Cllr Siddall (Chair of the Skate Park Working Group) would investigate potential other alternatives for recreational facilities which would meet the needs of ‘teens’ of both sexes.

Flood Warden The Council currently has two Flood Wardens who monitor, report or clear, if possible, any obstructions to the culverts and weirs in the Beck. One of the Flood Wardens has now decided to resign and the Council is looking for volunteers to assist in this matter. (see page 11).

Neighbourhood Plan The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee has submitted and received approval from West Lindsey District Council for the defined area of the Neighbourhood Plan to include the whole parish boundary area. The Committee has organised two drop-in sessions at the Old School on Friday 8 March (Small Hall) and Saturday 9 March (Large Hall), between 10.00am and 5.00pm both days. By the time you read this article you should have received a questionnaire requesting your response on topics relating to the Neighbourhood Plan, which can either be attending one of the drop-in sessions or by leaving the completed questionnaire in boxes located at the Parish Office at the Old School, Nettleham Library, Troika Cards & Gifts, Nettleham Co-op Food store, Mulsanne Park Pavilion, Village Hall and Nettleham Medical Practice. Details of the drop-in sessions can be found on the Nettleham Noticeboard page 3 and also on page 15.

Best Kept Village Competition 50th Anniversary As residents will recall from the winter edition of Nettleham News, Nettleham came 2nd in the 2012 competition.

However, at the presentation ceremony in November, representatives from Nettleham were surprised and delighted to be awarded joint first place in ‘The Most Successful Communities from the Past 50 Years’ category, along with Tealby.

A commemorative framed certificate was received along with the prize of a 5ft wooden bench with an inscription plaque, donated by Pennell’s Garden Centre, one of the sponsors of the Competition (see page 23). The bench will be located on The Green and a ‘commissioning ceremony’ is anticipated to take place in April 2013 with Richard Pennell invited to formally present the bench. The finalised details of the bench ceremony will be publicised in due course.

The January Snows Unsurprisingly, the Parish Council received a number of comments and complaints about the uncleared pavements following the snow in January. The responsibility (and budget) for road and pavement clearance (or non-clearance) rests with the Highways Department of the Lincolnshire County Council. The Parish Council telephoned the County Council on a daily basis during the problem period, with both specific and general requests for clearance of dangerous situations.

The Parish Council is seeking volunteers to help with snow clearance in any future severe weather conditions. The Council is also requesting details of any elderly and vulnerable residents who may need assistance during times of severe weather.

These details would be made available to the relevant services and would be kept by the Parish Office and would only be made available to the appropriate services.

Nettleham Football Club and the Parish Council has agreed to remove the thorny shrubs and low-lying thorny branches.

They will be replaced with more suitable species of native shrubs such as hazel and field maple.

Roads, Paths and Street Lighting The Council is very conscious of the poor state of many of the roads and pavements in the village. Some patching has taken place over the summer, and short lengths of pavement have been resurfaced.

The Council continues to pressurise Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) on these matters and regular reports are made at Council meetings by the area’s County Councillor, Mrs Jackie Brockway. These updates on planned work are detailed in the Council Minutes, which can be seen at the Library, on the Council’s website or at the Parish Council office.

Now known as Bishops Meadow, this sounds as if this is going to be a really important addition to our village something which future generations can truly value and enjoy.

Apparently a lot of new young native British tree saplings and woodland shrubs are going to be planted there.

Of course, I won’t be around myself to enjoy these in their maturity, but my offspring will have a beautiful and peaceful haven in which to live.

This is something that our children will be able to look back on and say: “I planted that tree in 2013 when I was little” I understand that it will be necessary first to plough the area in order to deter perhaps to their own children, or the long, coarse grasses, which have even grandchildren! flourished and dominated this piece of land for countless years. From Margaret in Watford I received the winter 2012 edition of Nettleham News and was shocked to read the letter sent in by Karis Annette which told of her pregnant daughter collapsing on the pavement and five women walking past and not offering any help.

It is hard to imagine this happening in Watford where the pace of life is so fast, but for it to happen in Nettleham is very frightening.

I am as outraged as Karis Annette at this incident and offer my sincere regret that it happened. I can only hope that her daughter has now had the baby and, if so, I send her my congratulations!

On a lighter note - I read the article on page 27 on Harley Towler and badminton and it triggered a memory from the 1980’s. My late husband, Brian, was involved in a lot of sports: rugby at school, boxing in the RAF, archery and also badminton, which was a great favourite and he was part of a team.

On a cold, wet Sunday in March, dressed in shorts, shirt and pullover, racket at the ready, he drove to a venue on the outskirts of London. We had a gold-coloured Ford Capri car at that time (I loved that car!).

At 5.00pm, he telephoned me from a garage (no mobile phones then of course) and said that he and his partner in a doubles match had won a trophy. Then he dropped the bombshell! He went to get the car and it wasn’t there - our lovely Ford Capri had been stolen!

As it was Sunday, public transport was very limited and he finally arrived home, shorts, shirt and pullover soaking wet, racket in one hand and the trophy in the other - and he couldn’t understand why people on the train kept staring at him!

I still have the trophy and have to smile when I think of that day.

I was very disappointed to learn (from the internet), that the Parish Council has made a decision to remove the planters and their floral displays from the boundary signs in Nettleham.

The planters were placed in position to replace the meagre planting of daffodil bulbs, which provided flowers for only a limited time in the year.

The planters and their contents were provided free of charge by local suppliers, and many residents, both in Nettleham and other villages, considered them to be attractive additions on the approach roads to our village.

The planters have always been maintained and watered regularly to preserve their appearance, and at no cost to the Council.

It is therefore in my opinion, a great pity that the Parish Council has adopted a negative attitude to their presence, especially as the alternative bulb planting will be a step backwards, and will have a very limited period of blooming.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Crowther for making a really excellent job of the planters, and Rudies Roots, for providing the various ‘seasonal’ plantings during their lifespan.

A Sad Loss Having seen the Parish Council Property Committee minutes, it is most unfortunate and disappointing to read that the planters located beneath the village signs at the entrances to our village are to be removed.

In other villages like Welton, Scothern, etc, there are floral displays and to have nothing would so detract from the look of the village as one enters it.

In our view the planters have been a lovely addition to the many attractions of Nettleham and displays of some sort should be continued.

Thank You! I would like to thank the two First Responders who came to my aid on Saturday 13 October 2012, after I had fallen and broken my hip.

I was squashed between two doors in our small kitchen, making access extremely difficult. My husband Alan telephoned 999 and the First Responders arrived in a matter of minutes. They quickly assessed the situation, reassured me, administered painkillers and then called for an ambulance, which also arrived quickly.

With its arrival, there were now five people present in the cramped space of our kitchen, but somehow I was expertly and painlessly extricated and on my way to hospital.

I am very pleased to report that today (7 January 2013) it is ten weeks since my return home, after receiving excellent and sympathetic care at Lincoln County Hospital and now by my husband Alan.

Ordure of the Day! It seems a constant problem in England, not least in Nettleham, that some very inconsiderate dog owners continue to let their dogs poo wherever they like. That includes outside my bungalow and if I catch them I will take a photograph and send it to the council!

Not only do they let their dogs do their toilet outside my bungalow, but also in the alley by the electricity boxes which constantly has dog excrement on the pavement. It is about time something was done about this disgusting habit of inconsiderate owners of animals - it is bad enough the owners of horses leaving mess in the roads, but the dog owners should be picking up after their dogs!

Letters from Readers Flooding in Nettleham!

Dear Residents of Nettleham Particularly those of you who were living in our village during all, or part, of the second half of the 20th century!

I can remember the floods in Nettleham which followed the winter of 1947 when the Beck not only overflowed its banks, but also cut a new channel for itself near where the Scout & Guide Huts now stand on Vicarage Lane.

Can you remember these floods?

I have memories that in subsequent years the Beck occasionally overflowed onto High Street, but I cannot recall exactly which years this occurred.

Can you remember these incidents?

It would greatly help our Parish Council and Nettleham if any of you could confirm my memories and, if possible, but not essentially, supply dates.

Have you memories of any other flooding incidents between 1947 and the flood of 2007 in Nettleham?

Grant aid, which would allow us to endeavour to limit future flooding, is being refused based only on evidence of the 2007 flood, which is alleged to be a single isolated incident.

Could you please write to me with your memories, however fleeting, and with dates if possible?

Flood Warnings

A Host of Memories

I currently have a role as Flood Warden for Nettleham. Fortunately since 2007 I haven’t been called into action, but increasingly the Beck causes me concern as the water levels are now very quick to rise at times of wet weather and we had a couple of anxious moments at the end of last year, when the Beck threatened to breach at Vicarage Lane.

Having spent a career in advertising in one form or another, I find Nettleham News very interesting and expertly published.

The main problem is that the culverts of the bridges at Church Street, Vicarage Lane and Brookfield Avenue get blocked with vegetation and branches, which are carried along in the fast-flowing water.

The Parish Council’s Village Handyman and Facilities Assistant do their best to clear the blockages when they are available, but very often the situation can get critical out of their contracted hours. It would be a great help to be able to call on able-bodied volunteers to assist in clearing this debris when necessary - obviously from the safety of the bank - not in the water!

Most of the Beck runs hidden through private back gardens and it would also be helpful if a few such residents could be our ‘eyes’ and monitor the state/level of the Beck and let us know when there is cause for concern.

I am also looking for help in the role of Flood Warden as my colleague is standing down. This would need to be someone who doesn’t live in the flood risk zone and who therefore won’t be worrying about their own property at a time of crisis.

Whilst Nettleham Beck is an iconic feature of our village, very picturesque in the summer, it does have its darker side and with severe weather events on the increase it is important we do all we can to protect homes and businesses in the heart of the village - not just for their benefit, but because we are an award-winning village with a proudly-held reputation of community spirit.

The Parish Council is also looking at ways to mitigate the threat, but in the meantime offering your help to the community would be greatly appreciated.

I was born in Nettleham in 1928 and have a host of memories. I come to Nettleham every 20th September and sit quietly in the church at 11.00am - I was married there and enjoyed a wonderful life with my wife, married 57 years. Sadly, I lost her three years ago.

Nettleham Neighbourhood Plan Recent Government legislation has empowered communities to be able to shape their future with Neighbourhood Plans which will become enshrined in the county’s Local Development Plans for the next 20 years.

This is your opportunity to have your say on how you want to see the village of Nettleham develop over that time.

There has to be a mention of ash trees.

They are facing a very uncertain future with the threat of the ash dieback disease (chalara fraxinea). Sadly, the time will come when there will be swathes of woodland stripped of this mighty tree, equal to the oak in many ways. It has the benefit of being faster growing than oak, but is equally hard and versatile. Together with elm, ash often made up the forests on limestone; it thrives in non-acidic conditions. We have to hope that some will have a resistance which will enable scientists to find ways to re-introduce this fine tree to our woods again in time.

We are so fortunate in Nettleham to have the avenue of cherry trees on Lodge Lane which, for a short time in the spring, makes us all feel uplifted at their beauty and promise of the spring and summer to come.

At the other end of the cycle, in the autumn, I frequently notice the smell of cherry or apple burning on wood stoves or fires as I wander down by the church.

These two events have made me think about the way that wood has been so important through the millennia.

Whatever the weather, a few minutes in a broad-leafed wood is inspirational. Every tree has a different sound in wind. Some sound scratchy, such as holly; some sound like shingle on a beach; some hiss and others, denuded of leaves, will even creak.

After summer rain, the leaves glisten and shed sparkling droplets onto the ground.

Wood has helped industry, kept us warm, given us shelter, built great ships and wonderful timber-framed houses. It makes fences, gate posts and bears fruit in great abundance. A tree is also a great refuge for wildlife.

Man soon learned in ancient times that the woodland, which covered virtually all of the British Isles, could serve him well.

He learned coppicing, the oldest form of wood management. This meant that if he felled a tree, the stump would grow fresh wood for more use. Signs of coppiced woods such as ash, oak and lime have been found at Neolithic sites and coppicing was carried on until well into the twentieth century.

Later Neolithic man started to keep animals and felled trees to make areas for grazing.

However, they still coppiced wood for fencing, firewood and building.

The Bronze Age, about 3,500 years ago, saw the burning of wood creating charcoal used to melt tin. This melted tin was mixed with copper to produce bronze.

William the Conqueror, after 1066, built approximately 1,000 fortified wooden fortifications. Building became the biggest use of wood, mainly oak, for many hundreds of years.

Indeed during the Tudor period, oak wood was so heavily used for ships and houses it became short and Henry VIII enclosed woods after cutting for protection from animals. He even stipulated the number of trees to be left per hectare to be grown into mature timber.

I lived in an Elizabethan timber-framed farmhouse for part of my childhood.

It creaked itself to sleep every night and even as a child I was in awe of the huge beams and floorboards, blackened with age. We had one remaining wooden Elizabethan window and a wood-panelled wig cupboard in the corner of one room.

Maybe this explains my love of wood.

When renovations were carried out, huge oak tree trunks were left to ‘season’ outside for several years before use.

The chair that the Queen sat on for her Coronation was commissioned in the thirteenth century and is still in excellent condition, having been revamped recently.

The Romans made great use of woodland as they were the first people to mine on an industrial scale and used wood for kilns and heating. However, successive tribes soon rekindled the old ways of clearing and farming.

One of Nelsons’s ships carrying over 1,000 men and between 70 and 100 guns used the timber from around 3,500 standard oak trees in its construction. Multiply this by the number of ships - 128 at the time of the Battle of Trafalgar - and the figure becomes even more staggering.

After the Romans left, much cleared woodland was left to its own devices and reverted to wildwood again.

Over time oak has always been in demand by craftsmen such as wheelwrights, cabinetmakers, joiners and coopers (barrel 17

The word ‘bodger’ is so descriptive. Living in a ‘bodger’s hovel’ in a beech wood, a bodger would set up his workshop and he would mostly make beech chair legs.

I have linked one of this magazine’s book reviews (see page 57) to woodland. This is ‘The Woodlanders’ written by Thomas Hardy.

We are lucky in Nettleham that we have a wide variety of broad-leafed trees. Near to our bungalow are several silver birch trees which often host to chattering magpies and crows happily arguing amongst themselves. Often derided, silver birch is a very useful tree, fast growing, wonderful for firewood and in history used for bowls and cradles. In the Industrial Revolution, in the Lancashire cotton mills, birch was used for bobbins.

Wood is irresistible. We all love to stroke old wooden furniture and slide our hands up and down banisters. Wooden benches adorn Nettleham in a variety of ages and colours. Even on a cold winters’ day wood feels warm.

Animals, in the heat of a baking summer day, love to shelter under a huge canopied tree such as a chestnut.

Let’s hear it for trees, their variety and beauty and their ability to lift the spirits.

I think the term ‘tree hugger’ can sometimes be used in a derogatory and unkind way. There is nothing wrong at all in wanting to touch and connect with something that has been at the heart of man’s progress for so many thousands of years.

Nettleham Twinning Association 2013 will be the 35th year when the Nettleham twinners will be meeting with their French twinners from Mulsanne near Le Mans, here in Nettleham.

Travelling overnight on the 19 April, our French friends will arrive around midday on Saturday 20 April. They will be staying with us here in Nettleham and surrounding villages until their return on Wednesday 24 April.

For the first time for many years the French flag will be flying during their

visit on the (relatively new) flag pole at the Old School.

So in April, when you see the flag flying you might hear French being spoken in the village. Mrs Willshaw, who teaches French in the Junior School, will be welcoming the head teacher of the Paul Cezanne School in Mulsanne to stay with her and her family, when they will be hoping to set up a link between our pupils and the pupils in Mulsanne, possibly starting by writing letters to each other.

At the moment we have around 50 members in the twinning association and we always welcome new members especially families. With the beginnings of a friendship between the schools in Nettleham and Mulsanne, we hope there will be twinning between the pupils and their families.

Charles Shaw of Nettleham was named as the recipient of the Witham Area Champion Award for 2012 at the West Lindsey District Council’s Community Awards ceremony held at the Guildhall, Marshall’s Yard, Gainsborough on Monday 10 December 2012.

Charles, who is known as ‘The Man of Sport’ in Nettleham for all his hard work and commitment to sports at Mulsanne Park, said: “I’m very pleased to have received this award.”

Terry Williams, Chairman of Nettleham Parish Council, made a recommendation to members of the council that Charles might be a fitting recipient for the award and Cllr Alan Bonney, proceeded with a nomination.

Hopefully Nettleham will produce further winners in the future.

Time’s Up! Two 90-year-old men, Mike and Joe, have been friends all their lives, but now Joe is in hospital dying. Mike visits him and says, “Joe, we both loved rugby all our lives and we played on Saturdays together for many years. Please, when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s rugby there.”

Joe looks up at Mike from his death-bed, “If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favour for you.”

Shortly after that, Joe passes on.

A couple of nights later, Mike is awakened by a blinding flash of light and a voice calling out to him, “Mike - it’s me Joe. I have some really good news and a little bad news.”

“Tell me the good news first,” says Mike.

“The good news,” Joe says, “is that there is rugby in heaven. Better yet, all of our old friends who have already died are here, too, and we’re all young again and it’s always spring and it never rains or snows. And, best of all, we can play rugby all we want, and we never get tired.”

“Well that’s fantastic,” says Mike, “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news” “You’re in the team for this Saturday.”

From Your County Councillor The bouts of severe weather over the last couple of years have had quite a destructive effect on our roads and the Highways Department at Lincolnshire County Council is making a huge effort to keep up with repairs. I’m forever ringing Alan Brown, one of the County’s senior officers, to report issues with the roads and he always gets back to me quickly with loads of information, which is excellent.

The main roads in Lincolnshire are slightly better than elsewhere in the country, but our smaller roads, on which most of us depend, are less good and Alan wants to make sure that we keep these roads as sound as possible.

It’s important that ‘Highways’ knows about damage to roads, so that they can try to prevent things from getting worse, so if you see a pothole which is about three or more inches deep, or any other damage, please give them a call on: 01522 782070 and report it.

You can also report online at: www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/doitonline You may not know, but each District and County Councillor has access to a small sum of money for special projects in the community. This sum amounts to £4,000 per councillor every two years. We are not allowed to use this money ourselves, but we can support local events. We are often asked to provide small amounts for various clubs and events, but I’ve been thinking about doing something different with some of mine this year and I’d like to know what you think about this, please.

Greetwell residents have recently started having village get-togethers every couple of months. They go to a local venue and spend a couple of hours having light refreshments, quizzes, etc and the police come along to give a short talk on different aspects of community safety.

They even have a second-hand book stall to raise a few pounds for various causes.

Why don’t we use some of my 21

councillors’ fund to pay for a few similar events in Nettleham? We could try one to see how it goes and then develop and change it according to what people would like.

Perhaps we could have a session for older residents and another for anyone who’d like to attend. Perhaps I could approach the village schools to see if some of the children might like to help with the organisation. When West Lindsey District Council stopped posting council papers to councillors they saved tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money.

The figures are changing all the time but I know that a saving of £70,000 has been quoted recently.

The Parish Council, the District Councillors and I are trying very hard to get something done about flooding dangers in the village. Alan Brown, the County Council officer I mentioned earlier, is also involved in this, which is good for us because he’ll do everything he can to help us. He’s sent us a lot of useful information and he’s been trying to get funding for us for the last two years. He’s not giving up and the councillors are going to work together to do all we can to help him.

Fifty Years of the Best Kept Village Competition The Best Kept Villages and Small Towns Competition was introduced to Lincolnshire, in its present form, by the Lincolnshire Branch CPRE and Community Lincs in 1962.

The aim of the competition was to encourage residents in villages and small towns throughout the county to appreciate their surroundings and take pride in the communities in which they lived. In many areas the competition has helped to inspire a real sense of community spirit and has been the starting point for community action aimed at making improvements to the local environment and improving community cohesion.

Nettleham first entered this competition in 1967 as a Class 3 Village (based on a population of between 2,001 and 7,000), which the village won at its first attempt; however, it took some 15 years (1982) to repeat this feat. Following those successes, Nettleham won again in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1992, 2000, 2002 with three successive wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010, which are recorded on the village sign at Washdyke Lane.

Nettleham was also placed second: five times and third: twice.

Judges usually begin their judging in June or July and continue throughout the summer over three rounds, looking at a wide range of criteria in assessing the towns and villages, in accordance with their marking sheet. These include freedom from litter (also dog poo!) and unsightly refuse, this also applies to car parks, tidy church, chapel and school grounds, cemeteries and war memorials, bus shelters and telephone kiosks, well-kept gardens, verges, greens, well-maintained benches, public footpaths within the village boundary, ponds and streams, tidy village halls, etc, playing fields, play areas, businesses and informative and up-to-date notice boards (including notification of the BKV competition!) and signs.

It should be noted that not all villages have all the above facilities. In addition, in 2012 for example, provision for wildlife was added (such as bird nesting boxes and feeders, bat boxes and wild flowers).

Presentation to the winners of the competition is made in November, usually at different village halls throughout the county. This year, however, being the 50th year of the competition, the celebration was held on 21 November at The Showroom on Triton Road in Lincoln.

The bench will be sited shortly in the centre of the village and Richard Pennell will be formally invited to ‘open’ the bench. It is anticpated that this event will be featured in the summer edition of Nettleham News later in the year.

Information and photographs from the past 50 years were on display, which also included photographs of the 10 most successful villages in all classes, including Nettleham (the others being Coleby, Harlaxton, Holbeach, Horncastle, Mareham-le-Fen, Ropsley, Scopwick, Tealby and Timberland).

Guests were welcomed by the Chairman of Community Lincs and the presentation was narrated by the competition organiser: Teresa Palmer. Nettleham Parish Councillors Terry Williams, Janice Clayton and John Downs attended to receive the plaque for coming second in the 2012 Class 3 competition. However, as an Agenda for the evening had not been issued beforehand, they were unaware that the final presentation was to be made to ‘the most successful communities from the past 50 years’.

It was announced that as joint winners of this prestigious award, Nettleham and Tealby were each to receive the prize of a 5-foot wooden bench, together with inscription, from Richard Pennell of Pennell’s Garden Centre, one of the sponsors of the competition.

The Chairman of Nettleham Parish Council, Cllr Terry Williams, said on receiving the award, “Our success in the competition during its 50 years is a reflection of the tripartite effort on the part of residents, local businesses and

Nettleham Medical Practice and Cherry Willingham Branch Surgery Obtaining Results When you attend for a test of any kind you will be told approximately how long you should expect to wait for the results.

Please bear this in mind and only call the surgery after sufficient time has elapsed.

Please note that we have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection. We will only give out results to the person they relate to, unless that person has given prior permission for their release.

AAA Screening

Blood tests, urine and stool samples, swabs:

Allow 5 working days for routine tests (please note there are some specific blood tests which may take longer).

X-ray and CT/MRI scans:

10- 15 working days. We ask patients to telephone the surgery for their test results, although there may be times when the doctor may think it necessary to call you.

The results line is open 10.30am - 2.00pm, Monday to Friday and is available by telephone: 01522 751717 option 4.

All results are viewed by a doctor who will have commented on the result. Our results line staff are able to let you know the result and the doctor’s comment, but are not clinically qualified to advise you further about this. If you feel you would like to discuss the results with the doctor, please ask the receptionist to book you a telephone consultation.

We are delighted to inform patients that the practice has been selected as one of the sites in Lincolnshire which patients can attend for their Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening. This is a new screening service in Lincolnshire for men who are entering their 65th year.

Screening invitations are sent by the screening team at Pilgrim Hospital Boston.

SCOTHERN PLAYERS NEED YOU! Scothern Players are a well-established amateur dramatic group who put on two plays a year at Scothern Village Hall. We have a very loyal following and usually sell out all performances.

We are a very friendly group with a reputation for encouraging new members of all ages and abilities, not just to try their hand at acting, but also directing, producing, stage management, front-of-house, technical, etc.

We particularly need help with set building: because the hall is used by many local groups, we usually have to build our sets during weekdays, so have found that retired people fit the bill perfectly!

What Goes Around...

Skinny Dipping

The following text, taken from the internet and sent in to Nettleham News may shed some light, in simple terms, on the way in which debt can be manipulated

An elderly man in Florida had a large pond at the end of his garden around which he had tastefully arranged a picnic table and some orange and grapefruit trees.

Helga is the proprietor of a bar.

She realizes that virtually all of her customers are unemployed alcoholics and, as such, can no longer afford to patronize her bar.

To solve this problem, she comes up with a new marketing strategy that allows her customers to drink now, but pay later. She keeps a careful record of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby effectively granting the customers loans).

Word quickly gets around about Helga’s ‘drink now, pay later’ policy and, as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Helga’s bar. Very soon she has the largest sales volume for any bar in town.

By providing her customers freedom from immediate payment, Helga gets no resistance when, at regular intervals, she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most popular beverages.

Consequently, Helga’s gross sales volume increases massively. A young and dynamic manager at the local bank concludes that these customer debts constitute potential valuable future assets and so agrees to increase Helga’s borrowing limit.

He sees no reason for any undue concern, since he has the recorded debts of the unemployed alcoholics as collateral. At the bank’s corporate headquarters, expert traders figure a way to make huge commissions, and transform these customer loans into ‘Drinkbonds’. These ‘securities’ are then bundled and traded on international securities markets.

Naive investors don’t really understand that the securities being sold to them as ‘AA Secured Bonds’ are really the debts of unemployed alcoholics.

Nevertheless, the ‘Drinkbond’ price continuously climbs and the ‘securities’ soon become the hottest-selling items

for some of the nation’s leading brokerage houses.

One day, even though the ‘Drinkbond’ price is still climbing, a risk manager at the original local bank decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Helga’s bar. He informs Helga, who then duly demands payment from her alcoholic patrons, but of course, being unemployed alcoholics, they are unable to pay back their drinking debts.

Since Helga cannot fulfil her loan obligations, she is forced into bankruptcy. The bar closes and Helga’s 11 employees lose their jobs.

Overnight, ‘Drinkbond’ prices drop by 90%. The collapsed bond asset value destroys the bank’s liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans, effectively freezing credit and economic activity in the community.

The suppliers of Helga’s bar had granted her generous payment terms and invested their firm’s pension funds in the bond securities. They find they are now faced with having to write off her bad debt and with losing over 90% of the presumed value of the bonds.

Her wine supplier also declares bankruptcy, closing the doors on a family business that had endured for three generations. Her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local brewery and lays off 150 workers.

Fortunately, the bank, the brokerage houses and their respective executives are saved, being bailed out by a multibillion pound no-strings-attached cash infusion from the government.

The funds required for this massive bailout are duly obtained through swingeing government spending cuts supplemented by new taxes levied on employed, middle-class, non-drinkers who have never even been in Helga’s bar.

One evening he decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn’t been for a while and he took a large bucket with him to bring back some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a group of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He coughed to make the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, “We’re not coming out until you leave!”

The old man frowned, “I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim naked, or make you get out of the pond naked.”

Holding the bucket aloft he said, “I’m here to feed the alligator!”

Household Tip Always keep a few ‘Get Well Soon’ cards on the mantelpiece, so if visitors arrive unexpectedly they will think you have been poorly and unable to do any cleaning!

A Fairy Story A married couple in their early 60s were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.

Suddenly, a beautiful little fairy appeared on their table. She said, “For being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.”

The wife answered, “Oh, I would simply love to travel around the world with my darling husband. The fairy waved her magic wand and - hey presto! - two tickets for a first-class cruise on the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.

The husband thought for a moment, “Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again.

I’m really sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.

The wife and the fairy looked at each other, deeply disappointed, but then a wish is a wish.

So the fairy waved her magic wand and hey presto! the husband became 92 years old.

The moral of this story?

Men should remember fairies are female

NETTLEHAM INFANTS SCHOOL IS 40!

Life begins at forty, so some people say, and it is also a time when many reflect on their lives and make positive changes. The same can be said for Nettleham Infants school, which has entered its fortieth year by becoming an academy.

12 July 2013 is the fortieth anniversary of the school in its current location. Present Head Nicola Driffill is keen to celebrate this great event by capturing as many memories that past pupils and staff have of their time at the school. “I have only been headmistress for the past 6 years”, says Nicola, “so I am a relative newcomer.

Looking recently at photographs and log books written by past heads has been really interesting and I think it would be a really great opportunity for the children to capture some memories of previous pupils and staff as part of this celebration”.

If you attended the school over the last 40 years, why not share any memories or photographs you may have of your time at Nettleham Infants School. The idea is that we collect the memories and they become part of a commemorative book and display at the school.

Progress continues at the Bishops Palace site - come Readers will, I’m sure, have noticed that progress continues apace at the Bsihops Palace site in the village.

The lych (or kissing) gate at the entrance to the site from High Street, adjacent to the Methodist Church, has now been installed together with the new Lincolnshire post and rail fencing along the north boundary wall of the site adjacent to High Street.

Additional fencing has now also been installed to separate the Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) part of the site from the Bishops Meadow area - soon to be the subject of new planting, of trees, shrubs, etc (more about this later).

By the time this edition of our village magazine is published and distributed, the new ‘threshold’gateway, which is to be located in this new section of fencing, will have been installed and will present an impressive entrance portal into the SAM from the Bishops Meadow (see page 72).

Those of our readers who have enjoyed participating in local tree-planting events in the past, now have another opportunity to take part in a significant event - this time here in the heart of our village.

On Saturday 16 March 2013, from 10.00am to 12 noon, you are invited to come to the Bishops Palace site and plant the trees, comprising British native species, which have been ordered for this purpose.

Since the planting area is located at the south-eastern corner of the site, access is most easily gained via the burial ground extension and although visitors are encouraged to arrive on foot, parking is available on Nettleham Junior School playground and at the Old School.

Don’t forget to bring a spade with you and since this event will proceed whatever the weather is on the day - come dressed for the occasion in warm clothing and wellies!

The latter are particularly important as the area will have been previously ploughed in order to give the new young trees a fighting chance against the previous long-established coarse grassland and is likely to be very muddy indeed!

Colour-coded cane markers identifying the planting positions for all of the trees will have been previously inserted by children from Nettleham Junior School and it is anticipated that it will take around two hours to get all the trees into the ground.

So if you do come late - the work will already have been completed and you will have missed your chance!

A number of single commemorative trees will be available for planting by individuals, families or groups/organisations, but this will be carried out in future months and not at the communal tree planting on 16 March 2013 (see opposite page).

It is also intended to plant a small number of heritage fruit trees in a group on the site at a later date and more information about this will be published in future editions of Nettleham News.

Later this spring, when the footpaths around the site have been designated, wild flower seed mixtures will be sown in the verges and woodland margins to provide colour and interest in future years.

The paths will also be mown regularly in order to maintain a short sward and prevent the coarse grasses, which originally grew there, from regrowing. This will also provide a pleasant surface on which to stroll and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the site.

An increasing number of residents and visitors are already making use of this new village amenity to take a leisurely stroll and dog owners are respectfully requested to pick up after their pets just as they would on any other public footpath in the village.

Dog bins will be provided by the Parish Council in the near future for the disposal of any excrement.

Similarly, visitors are requested not to leave any litter or participate in any activity which could physically damage the site in any way. This is a brand new amenity for our village and it is up to us, the residents, to ensure that we take good care of it for future generations.

The six wooden pegs marking the location for the new threshold gateway between the Scheduled Ancient Monument and Bishops Meadow can be seen in the gap left for this purpose in the new traditional post and rail fencing across the field (see page 72)

Visitors should be reminded that the larger area on the west of the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and as such is protected from any kind of activities which may damage the underlying archaeology.

There is currently no closing date for applications to plant commemorative trees and unless there is an unprecedented demand at the outset, the application procedure will remain open for the foreseeable future. However, there is only a limited amount of room available for trees on this site and a limit may eventually have to be set.

Please note that the purchase of a commemorative tree will be limited to a single tree per household or group/organisation.

The choice of trees available, which will all be British native species, is not known for certain at the time of publishing this edition of the magazine, but those who do express an interest will be notified when this information becomes available.

The cost for each individual tree is £100.00 and this figure will include future maintenance and, should the young tree fail for any reason, replacement of the tree with a new specimen of the same species.

Commmorative trees may be planted by individuals, families or groups and planting will normally take place during the months of November and March each year, under the supervision of Nettleham Woodland Trust and the Parish Council.

In order to avoid the proliferation of a large number of individual commemorative plaques around the site, it is anticipated that a single discreet sign will be located at the entrance, displaying information relating to sponsorships, dedications, etc.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase a number of commemorative benches to be located in the Bishops Meadow area. The style, number, location and cost of these is yet to be determined, but if you may be interested, please indicate this on the application form alongside and you will be contacted again in the future when more information is available.

A New Service for Youngsters in the Village

For the last 3 years BabyBells has offered sensory classes from newborn to 3 years in three different age-related classes.

Threshold Church in Nettleham

It has been seen that we are not currently meeting as a congregation in Nettleham on Sunday mornings and concerned folk have wondered if the church has ceased to exist. Well, I’m happy to say that, no, it hasn’t, and it’s still going strong.

Since September 2011, the three congregations of the church who had previously met at Lincoln (Monks Road), Welton/Dunholme and Nettleham, have come together to worship as one congregation meeting at 10.30am on Sundays at William Farr School, Welton.

Due to the size of the one combined congregation we need a large hall, and William Farr fits the bill extremely well. By meeting together again we are able to build a strong core church that is able to sustain all our missional teams from Hemingby to Witham St Hughes, and Bardney to Ingham.

The Joy of Sharing An elderly married couple were sitting in a fast-food outlet in town. The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink.

He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.

He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them.

As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking, “That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.”

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man thanked him, but said they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything.

People closer to the table noticed that the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns with him in sipping the drink.

Again, the young man came over and offered to buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said “No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.”

Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the table napkin, the young man again came across to the little old lady, who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked, “What is it you are waiting for?”

She patiently answered: “The teeth.”

Bad Timing!

Three old golfers are walking down the fairway, or, in their case, riding down the fairway!

“Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the 60-year-old, “You always feel like you have to pee. And most of the time nothing happens.”

“Ah, that’s nothing,” said the 70-year-old.

“When you’re 70, you don’t have regular bowel movements anymore. You take laxatives, eat bran, you sit on the toilet all day and nothing happens.”

“Actually,” said the 80-year-old, “Eighty is the worst age of all.”

“Do you have trouble peeing too?” asked the 60-year-old.

“No, I go every morning at 6.00am, no problem at all.” replied the 80-year-old.

“So do you have trouble having a bowel movement?” asked the 70-year-old.

“No, I have one every morning at 6.30am.”

Puzzled by this the 60-year-old said, “So what’s so tough about being 80 then?” “...I don’t wake up until seven.”

Think On! Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die and Don’t worry too much about old age it doesn’t last that long!

HELP LIVES Open Evening for Nettleham LIVES Dear Fellow Villagers, You are cordially invited to visit the Nettleham LIVES group at our Open Afternoon/Evening on Thursday 4 April 2013 at the Guide & Scout Hut, Vicarage Lane, Nettleham, from 3.00pm to 7.30pm.

Nettleham First Responder group would like to attract new volunteers to the team and we’ll be taking the opportunity to discuss what is involved in being a Responder or Fund Raiser/Helper.

It will be our opportunity to dispel some of the myths surrounding the role and to show you in practical terms what is and is not expected. moving to Travis Perkins as Director of Business Development. He is now one of the Managing Directors at Travis Perkins, where in the last five years, he has concentrated on building up the Tool Station business arm and Tile Giant, who are about to open their 107th store in the UK. Although Andy has a very busy career, spending a lot of time travelling globally, he considers himself very much a people person. He has a very close family and decided to move to Nettleham to be near his parents and his older brother in Scunthorpe, as well as Sara’s parents, who live in Lincolnshire. In fact, Andy is so taken with village life in Nettleham that both sides of the family may eventually settle here too.

Why did you originally become involved in LIVES? “I got involved in a conversation with David Herbert at the 2011 Nettleham Carnival and decided to find out more about the group. I freely admit to being squeamish, but decided that this fear was a ‘dragon I wanted to slay’. I completed the necessary training in 2012 and have been fully qualified for about 5 months.

Typically, I do about 4 or 5 duties per month.

“I found the training at Horncastle was excellent and ensures that whatever I’m faced with, I have the skills to cope. I’ve been able to put those skills into practice on two occasions so far. The types of calls you are asked to attend are for specific problems, mainly chest pains or breathing difficulties. You are not required to attend road traffic accidents or anything like that and the way I see it, you’ve really done something to help before the emergency services arrive.”

What do you gain from being a First Responder?

Andy has been involved in the group for a little over a year, having moved to the village in July 2011, with his wife Sara and children Tom, Ben and Grace.

Originally from Scunthorpe, Andy has been involved in the retail trade for over 30 years. Over the years, he has worked his way up the corporate ladder, before

“I love being a First Responder and feel that you get back out of life what you put into it. To steal a quote from John Lennon: ‘Life is what happens whilst you are busy making other plans.’ Once you’ve been to a call-out, put your skills into practice and actually made a difference to someone’s life, I go away feeling ten feet tall. In fact 43

it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. On the odd occasion when I’ve had to leave early for work, Sara hands the LIVES kit over to the next on-call Responder on my behalf. This also helps Sara feel part of the community.”

Andy, we can see that you have a very busy career and family life, do you have time for any other hobbies or interests?

“I play golf and enjoy keeping fit at the gym and through swimming. We also have a family business in Turkey. We have one luxury villa and yacht and are having a second villa built, all of which are available for hire. This keeps both Sara and I very busy. At the moment, I’m also attending a yacht master’s class on a weekly basis to learn navigation skills.”

How would you encourage others to join LIVES? “As I’ve already said, I’m a great believer that you get out of life, what you put into it. Joining LIVES as a volunteer is very rewarding and I get to work with and socialise with some great people. The training at Horncastle prepares you very well for the role and it’s a very important life skill that can be used anywhere, on your children, grandchildren or for family and friends. I was listening to Chris Evans on Radio Two the other day and even he has committed to learning first aid this year.

“I would encourage as many people as possible in the village to get involved in LIVES - it’s this sort of community spirit that makes Great Britain, great. So whether it’s a New Year’s resolution to do something more this year, or whether you just want to get involved in our wonderful village, with some really great people, I would say please come along to our Open Afternoon/Evening to see what’s involved. After all, I’m the squeamish one and look at me!”

Report Back from your Parking enforcement is changing!

Parking enforcement in West Lindsey falls into two distinct areas: on-street parking and off-street car parks operated by private organisations, town or district councils.

On-street parking enforcement in Lincolnshire was previously operated by Lincolnshire Police, but is now the responsibility of Lincolnshire County Council.

It was hoped that all the cost of this service would be funded from the enforcement penalties raised, but a predicted shortfall of £174,000 will now have to be met by the councils which are taking part.

What is not permitted, by law, is for any council to use CPE as a ‘cash cow’ to boost income to the council.

The County Council have said that they expect enforcement to be rigorous and those who park where they are not supposed to will get a ticket!

The Core Strategy and Local Plan

Mind Where You Park!

(Civilian Parking Enforcement) For what seems like an age now, we have, in Lincolnshire, been working towards civilian parking enforcement (CPE).

This means that no longer will the police, police community support officers or traffic wardens deal with general day-to-day parking enforcement, when people don’t park according to the rules, either parking on yellow lines or at inappropriate places. The police will still have their powers to ask people to move away from areas where they are not to park such as junctions, pedestrian crossings and where a vehicle is causing an obstruction. Also the police will retain all their powers with regard to traffic offences in general.

When CPE was envisaged, it was going to be the District Councils which would enforce on-street parking. Now this has been taken on by the County Council.

Three district councils - WLDC, SKDC and NKDC - are sharing the County Council’s enforcement and ticket processing arrangements for their off-street car parks.

The County Council have completed a tendering exercise and a company called APCOA Parking (UK) Limited have won a contract to operate the service on behalf of the County Council.

Penalty tickets are also to be processed through Nottinghamshire County Council to further reduce costs as they already operate a CPE Scheme.

Depending on the nature of the parking contravention, the Parking Contravention Notices (PCNs) are either £70 or £50. This is reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days.

About three years ago the Districts of North Kesteven and West Lindsey, along with the Lincoln City Council and the County Council, formed a planning authority under statute. They formed this planning authority to create a Local Development Frame Work and a Local Plan for use during the next 15 to 20 years.

The Joint Plan will cost each authority approximately half of what it would have cost to create individual plans themselves.

The total Local Plan comprises three parts: the Core Strategy, the Issues and Allocations Document and the Local Infrastructure Delivery Plan.

‘The Core Strategy’ is the formulation of the policies which will govern the way planning policy is defined and operated within the authority area.

The actual allocation of numbers of houses and other development is decided and determined in the ‘Issues and Allocations’ document.

The policy document of the Core Strategy has been out for consultation and there have been various events through the whole of the area talking with parish and town councils and members of the public.

The next stage will be to decide if, as a result of that consultation, anything needs to be modified or altered in any way. It will then have a further consultation before eventually being placed before an inspector at a public enquiry.

Some areas within the Central Lincolnshire Area, including Nettleham, are also doing Neighbourhood Plans, which, unlike Parish Plans, can be used as supplemental planning guidance. These too have to go before a Planning Inspector and be subject to consultation and public enquiry.

Green Bins WLDC will restart the collection of green garden waste recycling bins on your first collection day after the 25 March 2013.

Potholes!

Lincolnshire County Council, as Highway Authority, is responsible for managing and maintaining the road network in Lincolnshire. If you know of any potholes log onto: www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/highways and report them. Most are filled within 2-3 working days.

Over the life-time of the plan the Central Lincolnshire Area has a housing allocation from Central Government of something approaching 45,000 houses to be built in our area.

Most of this will be by way of urban extensions to the main settlements of Gainsborough, Lincoln and Sleaford.

However, even when that is all taken into account, there will still be around 9,000 houses to be built in the remainder of the area.

The ‘Infrastructure Delivery Plan’ is that area of the Local Plan which deals with the infrastructure in terms of roads, railway, internet connections and other communications, as well as places of work, schools and doctors’ surgeries, etc.

Local Councillors Councillors approve local Council Tax support scheme On 28 January, Councillors approved a local Council Tax support scheme that will protect vulnerable residents, while encouraging owners of empty property to bring them back into use.

Changes in Government policy announced as part of the austerity measures mean that in order to avoid a funding gap in Council Tax benefit of more than £1 million (split between West Lindsey, Lincolnshire County Council and Lincolnshire Police Authority) West Lindsey District Council has had to look closely at how much financial support can be made available to people previously in receipt of Council Tax benefit.

Following an eight-week public consultation, West Lindsey District Councillors approved a proposal, at a full meeting of the council on Monday 28 January, for a Local Council Tax Support Scheme designed to protect the most vulnerable people throughout the district while also being fair to all tax-payers.

Leader of the council, Cllr Burt Keimach, said: “In order to protect the most vulnerable residents of our district, the decision was taken to change some of the reductions currently available to those who own empty properties and to charge an additional amount of Council Tax on properties that have been empty for more than two years.

“There are currently more than 1,500 empty properties in West Lindsey, and more than a quarter of these will have been unoccupied for two years by 1 April 2013.

“We need to encourage owners of empty property to put these back into use to help provide much-needed housing and minimise homelessness.

“The new scheme must, by law, provide protection for pensioners, but by changing the empty homes reductions, we are also able to protect those who receive a war pension, a disability premium and those who receive a carer’s premium.”

Under the scheme, everyone of working age, unless they are in a vulnerable group, will be expected to contribute towards the Council Tax by paying 8.5 per cent of their Council Tax liability.

Second adult rebate will no longer exist for working age customers, all non-dependent deductions (where other adults live in the property who are not dependant on the claimant) will increase slightly and in order to receive the Council Tax support, weekly entitlement must be £2.50 or greater.

What is Celibacy?

The changes affecting empty properties will be: ● Any unfurnished property undergoing structural repair will receive a 25 per cent discount from the council tax for up to 12 months. ● Any unoccupied and unfurnished property will receive a discount of 100 per cent for two months followed by a full charge. ● Any property that has been unoccupied and unfurnished for two years or more will be liable for a premium of 50 per cent of the Council Tax, meaning the owner will pay 150 per cent. This latter change is to encourage owners of empty property to put them back into use quickly, thereby increasing the housing supply and helping to minimise homelessness.

There are currently 1,583 empty properties in West Lindsey, including 444 properties that will have been unoccupied for two years by 1 April 2013, when the changes to Council Tax benefit will come into effect.

Cllr Keimach added: “The council has been forced to make tough decisions regarding Council Tax support, but we believe we have reached the best solution given the circumstances. We are committed to protecting our vulnerable residents, and we will hopefully see more empty properties brought back into use for our communities.”

Whilst attending a Marriage Weekend, Frank and his wife Ann listened to the instructor declare, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.

He then addressed the men. “Can you name and describe your wife’s favourite flower?”

Frank leaned over, touched Ann’s arm gently and whispered, “Be-Ro self raising, isn’t it, love?”

And thus began Frank’s life of celibacy.

Grand Finale!

It was entertainment night at the senior citizens’ centre and after the community sing-song led by Joyce at the piano, it was time for the star of the evening: Claude the Hypnotist!

Claude explained that he was going to put the whole audience into a trance.

“Yes, each and every one of you and all at the same time,” said Claude.

The excited chatter gradually dropped to complete silence as Claude carefully withdrew a beautiful antique gold pocket watch and chain from his waistcoat pocket.

“I want you to keep your eyes on this watch” said Claude, holding the watch high for all to see. “It is a very special and valuable watch that has been in my family for six generations.”

He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting “Watch the watch... Watch the watch... Watch the watch...”

The audience became mesmerised as the watch swayed back and forth, it’s gleaming golden surfaces twinkling in the spotlight. A hundred and fifty pairs of eyes followed the movements of the gently swaying watch.

And then, quite suddenly, the chain broke and the beautiful watch fell to the stage and burst apart on impact.

“Sh*t” said Claude.

It took them three days to clean up the Senior Citizens’ Centre and Claude was never invited there again!

LINK ROMANIA I know you’ll be pleased to learn that the total number of shoeboxes received by Link Romania last year was 40,000.

Isn’t that wonderful? Our total eventually reached 382 boxes and it was great to realise that we were bringing joy to more than three hundred families at Christmas time. Of course there were many more happy families when the remaining boxes were delivered and so many beaming smiles, as well as tears of joy, as a result of the boxes. Thank you all once again for caring and sharing.

Many of you are already busily knitting hats, mitts, scarves, etc, for this year’s Shoebox Appeal. Knowing as we do now how low temperatures can get in the winter months, your help is invaluable.

It was so good to be able to stitch so many squares into blankets, of all sizes and thanks must go to the ladies of the Creativity Group, those in Avalon Court Lincoln, and many more ladies in the village for their kindness.

1st Nettleham 4th Lincoln Scout Group Winter is almost over and spring is in the air! What better way to celebrate than the Scout and Guide Gang Show. Yes we are all practicing hard to prepare for our bi-annual event. This year’s theme is ‘Time’.

Performances will take place on Saturday 23 March at 2.30pm and 7.00pm at Cherry Willingham Community School. Tickets will shortly be on sale at Beckside Newsagents at a cost of £5.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Look out for posters around the village!

You’re not just a ‘Relayer’ - you’re a LIFESAVER Imagine joining with families, friends, work colleagues and whole communities, being part of a unique and inspirational fundraising opportunity which culminates in a 24-hour celebration giving the people of Lincolnshire the chance to remember and celebrate the lives of those touched by cancer.

Over the year teams will register and hold various fund-raising activities from cake bakes, tombolas, table-top sales, treasure hunts and more. This is not a sponsored event!

Then we come together to raise awareness, remember and celebrate our achievements over the year in a truly memorable 24-hour event!

Relay For Life Lincoln is, as the name suggests, a walking Relay for teams - made up of families friends and work colleagues and will take part at Welton William Farr Secondary School on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July 2013.

The best part of Relay for Life Lincoln is that anybody can join in, regardless of age or fitness level - you don’t have to run, it’s not just for girls - any age and ability can take part and you don’t have to wear pink!

Whilst the event is in full swing, team members will take turns to walk around the track for the duration of the Relay.

One thing is clear, that with every step you take you are helping us to raise valuable funds for Cancer Research UK in the hope that one day we will beat cancer.

This event, now in its fourth year here in Lincolnshire, is organised by a group of local people and has over the last three

years raised £130,000 for Cancer Research UK which is amazing!

The event brings together whole communities and each person who shares the Relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are making a difference in the fight against this indiscriminate disease.

During the 24 hours we will have live music, food and refreshments, activities, arts and crafts, displays, stalls and a wide variety of entertainment, fireworks and perhaps a few surprises!

We have lots of individuals, teams and community groups from local communities already taking part in some way - it’s not too late for you to get involved too!

Heres how... you could start a team, you could have a stall, or provide an activity, or you could come along over the two days and enjoy the wide range of activities and music whilst soaking up the family and community atmosphere - that’s Relay.

Male Driver Scam!

Women drivers often receive warnings about protecting themselves at shopping centres, car parks, etc, but this is the first warning I have seen for men.

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Here’s how the scam works: having completed your shopping and returned to your parked car, two young ladies in very skimpy attire will come over as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They politely ask for a lift to McDonalds and, being kind, you agree. On the way there, one of them starts undressing to distract your attention, while the other one steals your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen January 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 17th and 29th. Also February 5th, twice on the 8th, 23rd and 27th and very likely again this coming weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful! What a terrible way to take advantage of us older men! Warn your friends to be vigilant!

Please, tell all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the look-out for this scam. The best times are just before lunch and around 4.30 in the afternoon. (Incidentally, supplies of wallets are usually available in the Pound Shop).

All Saints Parish Church, Nettleham Following Jesus to the Cross and Beyond Life is often described as a journey.

For some that journey is a happy one, for others it is a struggle. For some the destination is clear, for others it is a journey of surprises.

They slept or slipped away. We are invited to stay or give some time in church up to midnight to sit with him.

“Would you not watch me one brief hour?”, he asked.

The Christian message is that we do not travel alone. God gave us Jesus Christ to be a real person and a friend, someone who shares our humanity, shares our sorrow and joy, and shares our journey.

Through God’s love and the gift of Jesus, we have his support, guidance and comfort wherever our journey of life takes us.

Good Friday is the bleakest day of the church year. We follow the long painful journey that Jesus took to the hill where he was crucified, carrying his cross, receiving the taunts, the curiosity and the occasional aid of onlookers. Starting at 9.30 in Welton, we visit each of our five churches, ending with an extraordinary event in Nettleham at 2.00. The bare wood itself, in all its awfulness at the heart of the church; we share its pain, we give thanks for its sacrifice, and we bring all our fear and guilt and all our prayers to the foot of the cross. Then we go away quietly.

Then nothing.

Jesus himself went on a journey - the most important journey ever undertaken.

He travelled from the countryside into Jerusalem where he knew he would be attacked by the enemies of his gospel of love, peace, freedom and fairness.

He knew it would end with his trial and death - the cruellest and most humiliating possible death - death by nailing to a cross. He asked his disciples to travel that journey with him, and their love for him and their resolve to do his will was sorely tested. One of them betrayed him, others dropped away as the intelligence services that surrounded the political machine in Jerusalem closed in on him. In the end it was only his mother and very closest friends who were with him when he died.

During the week before he died, he was swept into the city by a crowd of ordinary folk from the villages, a shocking contrast to the Messiah everyone expected. No triumphant warrior on a horse with an army. That was not the kind of kingdom Jesus was proclaiming. A man condemned to die, riding a donkey, cheered on by society’s no-hopers. A man not proclaiming vengeance but forgiveness. Not proclaiming political, military or financial power, but peace, love and simplicity.

During the week, he sat with his disciples and gave to them, in the sharing of bread and wine, the way by which they and we could continue to meet him alive after his death. Then the crucifixion, and for three bleak days he vanished and all seemed lost. And then people started encountering him again.

This is the resurrection, the triumph of life over death, which those who travel with him share, and which makes him as

alive for us in our difficult and needy world as he was in theirs.

At the end of this month we relive this extraordinary journey in the churches of Nettleham, Riseholme, Welton, Dunholme and Scothern, as in all churches around the world. Starting on Palm Sunday, 24 March, we stand with him as he enters into Jerusalem.

Nettleham (9.30) and Welton (11.00) both have a telling of the whole Passion story, a procession with a donkey, palms and loud ‘hosannas’. Drama and real life meet in this popular service. There is something to do, somewhere to pray every day during this last week - baroque music with candles and darkness at Nettleham on Monday, a musical meditation at Scothern on Tuesday and following the ‘way of the cross’ at Dunholme on Wednesday, all at 7.30pm.

The climax of the journey, and the part we are specifically asked by our Lord to follow with him, is the last part of the week. Maundy Thursday, at Nettleham, celebrates the last supper, the gospel event that created our Communion Service, our Eucharist or Mass. We recreate the gathering of the disciples in the upper room, our Lord washing their feet as an act of love and service, the first taking, giving thanks, breaking and sharing of the bread, and then, in some of the most moving and imaginative drama, the church is stripped of all ornament, and darkness and silence remain. Jesus went to the garden to pray before his conviction and crucifixion, and asked his disciples to pray with him.

Of course we know, as Jesus knew, that this is not the end. We have Easter and the Resurrection. On Saturday evening at 8.00pm in Nettleham and at 11.00pm in Welton, we gather to relive the shock and life-changing experience of the empty tomb. We read of the history of God’s care for us and continual actions to save us, we create new fire outside the church (and much more at Welton!), bless the Easter candle and renew the promises made at our Baptism.

We proclaim the good news of Christ’s triumph over death in which we all can share through the gospel and through baptism and the Eucharist. “He is risen”, we all shout. Then on Easter Morning all churches have communion services with hymns, hats, and hurrahs, even chocolate eggs!

What a journey! Please consider joining in this journey, this great drama, this greatest story ever. You can come to a little or a lot. Travelling a little of the way with someone is the best way to get to know them, and so it is with us and Jesus. Just as there was a place for each of the disciples on that great journey into darkness and out into light again, there is a place for each one of us.

Christ will be with you on your journey of life - will you be with him on his?

Old Nettlehamites will recognise some good old Nettleham names there!

As such a feat was rare in those days, the present ringers felt that we wanted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this ringing.

Since none of the present Nettleham band of ringers feel up to ringing and concentrating non-stop - for nearly three hours, we have decided to attempt a quarter-peal on the actual anniversary, so listen out for the bells on Friday 19 April for around 45 minutes, starting at 6.00pm.

We are also arranging for friends from the neighbouring churches to come and ring a full peal on our bells the following day - Saturday 20 April, starting at 2.00pm. During this time there will be a display in the church for those interested in the history and practice of ‘campanology’ and, of course, there will be tea/coffee and cakes. There might even be a birthday cake as well!

Do come and celebrate with us!

We hope any donations at this time will help towards the cost of repairs that are currently needed to the fabric of the tower.

Incidentally, 1813 seems to be a significant date here - the small

‘calling bell’ that we recently acquired second-hand during the Millennium restoration of the ringing peal co-incidentally has the date 1813 inscribed on it!

We know that there has been a ring of 3 bells at Nettleham since 1724, which were augmented to a peal of 6 bells in 1740, but apart from records of when they were restored, we have no idea of who actually rang them until 1930.

Suffice to say that we, the ringers of All Saints, follow in an ancient tradition of ringing each week to call people to worship. We hope to be able to continue this for many years to come - but to be able to do this we need to constantly teach new members this fascinating art.

Anyone interested will be given training at their own pace, and we are a happy, friendly bunch who would love to welcome you in our midst.

There will be opportunity to enrol on 20 April - or call me on 01522 753412 and I will arrange for you to be shown ‘up stairs’ to actually see us ringing and to start your training.

Once upon a time...

“The subject of the source of Nettleham Beck is as problematical as the source of the Thames, in its own small way.

On the Lincoln Edge, on the border between North and South Carlton, a spring emerges in what is now the Lincolnshire Showground. With such a small beginning, in a much reworked piece of ground, during a drought, who can tell for sure?

But our picture, showing a simple pipe and a dry bed, at least hints at some identity and ambition. This channel curves around what is now an angling lake and runs under the A15 at Watering Dyke Houses before running, as little more than an ambitious field ditch, through Grange de Lings and into the woodland at the north end of Riseholme Park.

Thanks to works carried out by students over recent years, what we can now call Riseholme Beck runs south to achieve a well-defined, but soggy, transition into the northern end of Riseholme Top lake not far from the ‘tax college’ of Lawress Hall.

From there the bigger Riseholme Lake, created from an old mill pond in the stately home age, makes the perfect foil for Riseholme Hall and Park, described for centuries as ‘the pet place of Lincoln’.

Channels of lake outflow reconstitute Riseholme Beck as it flows out of the park, beside the aptly named Beck Cottage, and through farmland near the college equestrian area.

When the beck babbles under Riseholme Lane close to the hunt kennels, it has already crossed the parish boundary and become Nettleham Beck. Bordering a farm field, the beck makes its way to the A46 where it crosses into the built-up area near the Brown Cow. Local streams have such history and contribute so much to wildlife and landscape, we can only applaud Nettleham News for giving us the opportunity to open a window onto this often glimpsed, but perhaps seldom explored, natural heritage.”

NETTLEHAM ART GROUP

Christmas Art & Craft Sale Nettleham Art Group held its 6th annual pre-Christmas Art & Craft Sale in the Old School on Saturday 10 November at the Old chool in Nettleham.

Unlike the July Exhibition, which displays new paintings completed during the previous year, this November sale is an opportunity for members to sell any of their paintings and prints, birthday and Christmas cards, craft work, art books and materials. Admission is free and refreshments are served during the course of the morning.

The event was again very successful, with well over one hundred visitors between 10.00am and 1.00pm, and with sales considerably higher than last year.

Unframed paintings and prints, cards and art materials all sold well, also craft items such as festive Christmas decorations, jewellery and decorative mobiles. The refreshments proved as popular as ever with visitors to the sale!

Profits from the event enabled the Group to donate £100.00 to Sense, the charity for deaf-blind people of all ages. The Lincolnshire office of the charity, based in Louth, has used the donation to purchase switches and a switch-adapted dog to help deaf-blind people to communicate.

Many thanks as always to all those members and friends who helped on the day to make it such a successful event.

The popular Nettleham Art Group, now in its ninth year and with a total of 40 members, will be holding its annual exhibition in the Old School in July, from Friday the 12th to Sunday 14th. The Spring Book Review Phyllis Maiden

The Woodlanders

by Thomas Hardy Little Hintock is deep in woodland and peopled by workers who make their living from wood, be it planting trees, cutting them down, making hurdles, charcoal and thatching spars.

The railways were coming and yet this village for the moment is bypassed and communications were difficult.

Maybe Hardy realised that the end of an era was coming and wanted to write about it.

This novel, Hardy’s favourite, is probably one of his most descriptive particularly trees and their importance to the villagers. He does not talk about a ‘week’. He writes: ‘the sunny, leafy week’. Another lovely description is: ‘The leaves over Hintock unrolled their creased tissues’.

This book is a tale of love, arrogance, deceit and humility. Marty South, in particular, is a gentle soul who is fully aware of her lowly place in society.

There is sadness in this book, but not to the extent of Hardy’s other books.

This is a true portrayal of woodland life at the end of the 19th century.

I have yet to find another wordsmith quite like Hardy.

Fathers and Sons

by Richard Madeley This book was a complete surprise, very enjoyable and a page-turner.

We all know Richard Madeley as one half of Richard and

Judy, over-confident and sometimes outspoken. Yet this book, with its tale of his grandfather’s trauma many years ago shows a completely different side to him.

The betrayal of his grandfather is heartbreaking and this action has repercussions through the years to come, even down to Richard’s father.

With a lot of help from his American mother whom he gently questioned, Richard managed to piece together the great mystery surrounding his family. In turn, Richard himself is left to doubt his own parenting abilities.

Of course in this book we also see Richard as we know him - ambitious and energetic. However, this is tempered by his determination to make a good job of looking after his own family to put to rest the ghosts of his past.

All in all, a good read.

Mr Stink

by David Walliams This was on the television during the Christmas period.

Like the Roald Dahl books, this is delightfully illustrated by Quentin Blake.

I may not be the only one who feels that Walliams even writes like Roald Dahl, and, like him, he knows what makes children laugh, even though to grown-ups some of his ideas might seem horrible.

This is a story of a tramp befriended by a young girl. She does not see what adults see - a scruffy man with terrible clothes. She seems to see straight into him in the way that often only children can. Without giving away the plot, she eventually takes him home and finds out why he has ended up homeless.

He is articulate, clever and down on his luck.

This book could be read by older children and read out loud to younger children. It contains lessons about not judging people by appearance and giving ourselves time to get to know them.

This is at times a laugh-out-loud book

Carrie’s War

by Nina Bawden Sadly, Nina Bawden has recently died and I sincerely hope that her delightful books will not be forgotten.

Carrie’s War has recently been on the London stage. It is a moving story of war and separation as Carrie and her brother are evacuated to the country during World War II. Nina Bawden herself was an evacuee and so has written with first-hand knowledge.

It must have been a very confusing time for these children, taken away in their thousands, put on a train with a small suitcase and a packed lunch and ending up in strange places and often with unwilling host families.

Carrie and Nick do their best to settle down, but it is not easy for them.

They are not greeted warmly by everyone, but they soon befriend some other evacuees and Carrie tries to understand the people around her.

It is a rite of passage for these children and they do a lot of growing up.

Carrie returns to the area when she is an adult and only then does she fully understand what has happened to them during the war.

A lovely winter evening read.

Nettleham Poppy Appeal 2012 It proved to be a difficult year for the Poppy Appeal in Nettleham in 2012 and for the first time we failed to reach the previous year’s total.

There were several reasons for this.

For a variety of different reasons we lost house-to-house collectors, but we were able to recruit two new additions to the group which softened the blow somewhat.

Additionally we lost Linelands Care Home and one hairdressing business, both of which were good sources of income.

As well as the loss of two business outlets, it also meant that large areas of our village were not fully covered.

Despite these difficulties we were still able to raise the wonderful total of £2,163.17, which says a great deal for the great generosity of Nettleham residents.

Our business outlets again proved just how valuable their support is with the sum of £936.88, whilst our house-to-house collectors did their usual sterling work to raise £1,634.26.

We also received a generous donation of £42.03 from the Infants School in addition to their usual contribution. This was the result of a project undertaken by the children themselves in which they decided to make their own poppies. Having seen the results of their work, I have to say that they did a brilliant job and should be very proud of their efforts - very many thanks to all concerned.

We do encounter problems each year, mainly in the area of house-to-house collections and these will continue.

As collectors get older and perhaps develop heart problems, it becomes much more difficult for them to carry out the work. Many of our collectors have been doing the job for a good number of years and clearly cannot go on forever.

We really do need extra help in this area if the appeal is to continue in future years. The business outlets remain sound and are in good shape for the forseeable future. However, we must never take their support for granted.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone concerned for a great effort under difficult circumstances. All our house-to-house collectors for their continued good work, including our two new recruits who did an excellent job. To our business outlets for their continued support and those who helped out at the money count - not an easy job!

Last, but certainly not least, our organising group, without whose help it could not happen. Trays of poppies have to be delivered and at the end of the period gathered in and the money counted it all takes time.

Anyone who feels that they would like to help us in any way can contact me on 01522 751370. I would be very happy to hear from you and will provide all the information. Young people would be especially welcome as they are the future but of course age is no barrier.

PROBUS CLUB

The Nettleham Club is part of a nationwide organisation with the simple aim of promoting friendship and fellowship among members.

To achieve this, we meet on the first Wednesday of every month at The Cherry Tree Café, Sudbrooke, for a coffee morning where wives and partners are welcome, and for lunch at Hemswell Court every third Wednesday. In July and December we also invite wives and partners to attend the lunch. In addition, we organise outings to places of interest to members.

The Club is open to professional and business men who have retired, or nearly retired, and who are resident in the Nettleham District.

A small committee operates the club in line with a constitution agreed by the members and we currently have 45 members.

You can attend up to three luncheons as a guest (you need to pay £15.50 for your meal) before deciding whether or not to join. Alternatively, just turn up at 10.00am for the coffee morning.

The Lincoln Skate School stories on more than one occasion, urged me to take them so they could see what their dad could do. So once again I found myself being met by the flashing lights, loud music and bodies rushing past in front of me.

It was a cold October evening when I first opened those large wooden doors and the sight I saw in front of me both excited me and made me feel nervous. A large hall, smelling slightly musty, loud music, flashing lights and the silhouettes of bodies flashing past in front of me.

This was the first time I had seen what had become known as a roller disco. The place was the Drill Hall, Broadgate, Lincoln and the year 1984. I spent the next few years learning to master these eight-wheeled things that were attached to the bottom of my feet. I gradually progressed from being able to stand up to being able to perform jumps spins and other moves - loving the feeling of freedom that came from skating to music.

During those early years I spent three nights a week at the Drill Hall and other times at North Kesteven and Yarborough sports centres. My skating took me as far as Bury St Edmunds and down the A46 to Derby. All through my college years I continued to skate, gradually honing my skills - I just loved the feeling of gliding round the rink feeling free as a bird.

Fifteen years passed and I found myself back in Lincoln, four children and working for a large bank. Then one day I heard that a new roller disco was operating in Lincoln.

Once I had my skates back on I felt like I had shot back in time - the excitement flooded back to me. I was shaky and it took a while to get back in to it, but soon I regained my confidence and once again was hooked. That was a or so year ago and from then to now the pace has really quickened up.

I began seriously to re-learn my artistic skills. Weekly trips once again to the roller disco and also I began to hire a local hall for my own practice sessions. I was accepted as a member of the Federation of Artistic Roller Skating (FARS is the governing body of artistic roller skating in the UK). Although there are no clubs in our area, I was soon working with the federation to help my skating, being in regular contact with coaches and other clubs. I regularly spent time in Great Yarmouth with a national coach and once again took my skating grades tests.

I also during that time became a member of the British Roller Skating Federation, the umbrella body for roller sports in the UK. Spending weekends at the University of Roehampton in London in order to complete a Level 2 National Coaching Certificate in roller skating. I managed to pass this qualification and at present I am one of the only two qualified roller skating coaches in Lincolnshire.

When I finally moved away to university in 1989, I chose a city that held one of the best skating rinks the UK had to offer at the time. Nottingham has recently become the home to a new state of the art rink: ‘Rollers’. This rink had a large maple floor and the best light and sound system a rink could offer. It was here that I was first introduced to the sport that is known as ‘artistic roller skating’. This is the roller skating equivalent to figure/free skating as seen on ice.

On successful completion of this certificate I was invited to be a member of the BRSF coaching committee. I also during this time formed Lincs Skate School, a sports club which teaches people to roller skate in a fun and safe environment. The forming of this club has taken me to local radio stations to promote the sport of roller skating in Lincolnshire.

I spent many Wednesday afternoons practicing flying spins, jumps and brushing up on my figures. I learned that artistic skating was made up of three disciplines: figures - tracing large circles with precision on patterns drawn on the floor, dance - set step routines to laid out dances and free interpreting music including set elements as in jumps, spins and step sequences.

I began to skate competitively within the freestyle category, securing a couple of titles. As I graduated from university I got married and moved away with work.

My skating gradually was pushed aside as family commitments came top of the list for me. I skated frequently, but always in my thoughts were those eight wheels and

It is many years since I first slipped my foot in to a pair of roller skates, but the excitement is still as intense as ever. That feeling of nearly flying - there is nothing that comes near to it!

Nurse Winifred Heath Regular readers may remember that in past editions of the magazine, a long-remembered and well-respected resident of Nettleham years ago, Nurse Winifred Heath, was featured in a number of articles.

Here are two more press articles from 1986 (origin unknown) which were kindly sent in by Christine Edison, whose mother, Nellie Kinder, sent them to her whilst Christine was living in Yorkshire and Northumberland.

The photographs are taken from the press cuttings and being from a newspaper are unfortunately rather indistinct as a result.

Tribute to a true trooper at 94!

Judy Rees meets the former midwife and missionary who is retiring from charity work...at 94!

It’s not every keen fund-raiser who gets a nature reserve named after them. But Winifred Heath, of Nettleham, certainly deserves it.

Since joining the Lincolnshire Trust for Nature Conservation when it was first formed more than 20 years ago, she has raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

This week she held her last sale for the Trust at her home. And among the white elephants, jars of pickles and jams, and Trust souvenirs, she was presented with an illuminated citation, and told about the wild flower meadow which would bear her name.

For instance, she never misses a Sunday at her local church, where she is a member of the choir.

There were no half measures for her when she was younger, either.

Orphaned by tuberculosis, she left Birmingham at the age of 17 to train as a nurse. Two years preliminary training in Manchester, and she was off to London to do three years training in general nursing, two years in midwifery and another year to become a Queen’s nurse. “Now they think they’re a nurse after two years.

But I did eight years, so I could call myself a trained nurse.

Lovely A year later she was calling herself a missionary, after going to Bible school.

Her ‘patch’ was the central provinces of India, where she stayed for seven years.

She learnt Hindi and Urdu, delivering babies and preached the gospel. “It was lovely there - very interesting.”

Her first job back in England was at Nettleham - and she kept it until she was 73, delivering several generations of babies in the village and surrounding areas.

Of course, the village has changed since she first arrived. Then, everyone worked on the land, and money was very tight.

Everybody had their babies at home, with Nurse Heath’s help - there were no hospitals. For years, she walked or cycled from house to house.

Benefits And she was roped into doing less pleasant jobs, such as putting pets to sleep when they fell ill, using lethal gas. ”People just couldn’t afford a vet,” she explained.

Nettleham is now home to commuters from Lincoln, and to pensioners who have benefits that simply weren’t available then - sheltered bungalows, and old people’s homes.

But it’s still a very friendly place, according to Nurse Heath. “People don’t want to leave, and if they do leave they often come back. And the church and the chapel are always full,” she said.

Peaceful Now almost completely retired, even from charity work, she is planning a peaceful life, shared with her constant companion, racing whippet “Red” more properly known as “Flying Beth.”

But according to her friends in the village - and she has made many during her years in Nettleham - we’ll be seeing more of Nurse Heath.

“She’s indestructible, She’ll live well past 100,” one told me.

The Trust is not the only charity to have benefitted from her enthusiasm.

She recently received a silver medal from the RSPCA for her work for them over the last 50 years. She has also supported the Children’s Society, the Donkey Sanctuary, Field Paths Association, the Council for the Protection of Rural England...and many more.

A remarkable record for a 94-year-old!

Her approach to such work is simple.

“If you belong to something you belong to it. You don’t just go when the mood takes you,” she told me.

Terms of Endearment

Heathie’s nature work reward Distinguished 94-year-old Miss Winifred Heath has now been honoured for her remarkable efforts to raise money for nature conservation in the county.

Winifred lives in Nettleham and is known as “Nurse Winifred” or “Heathie.”

She has raised thousands of pounds over the years for the Lincolnshire Trust for Nature Conservation by

having “sales” of pickled onions, jams and cakes.

She was honoured during her final sale and was presented with a framed illuminated scroll by Mr. Philip Newton, chairman of Lincolnshire County Council.

Winifred was surrounded by close friends and helpers, as well as her little whippet, Red.

An elderly lady was invited to an old friends home for dinner one evening.

She was very impressed by the way her lady friend preceded every request to her husband with endearing terms such as: my love, darling, sweetheart, etc.

The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love.

While the husband was in the kitchen, her lady friend leaned over to her hostess to say, “I think it’s wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your husband all those loving names.”

The elderly lady hung her head. “I have to tell you the truth”, she said, “his name slipped my mind about 10 years ago and I’m scared to death to ask the miserable old beggar what his name is.”

Medium Peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered the grave news: “There’s no easy way to tell you this, so I’ll just be blunt. Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death, later this year.”

Visibly shaken, Sarah stared at the woman’s lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself and to stop her mind racing. She simply had to know...

She met the fortune teller’s gaze, steadied her voice and asked, “Will I be acquitted?”

(For some reason, wives tend to like this joke)

Line of Command Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new Colonel was sitting at his desk when a private knocked on the door of the room.

Conscious of his new position, the Colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the private to enter, then said into the telephone, “Yes, General, I’ll be seeing him this afternoon and I’ll pass on your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir.”

St Barnabas is an independent, local charity caring for over 5,600 people who are living with a life-limiting illness in Lincolnshire.

It supports adult who have complex symptoms and pain which needs to be controlled by St Barnabas’ team of specialist health professionals.

St Barnabas offers the patient and their families hospice care and support via: in-patient unit, community ‘hospice at home’ service, day therapy and outpatient clinics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and complementary therapy, welfare advice and support and bereavement support.

All the services are free.

St Barnabas needs to raise over £3m a year to provide its support and care.

1,000 volunteers play a crucial role in the charity’s success.

Being concerned about our Nation; unemployment, financial crisis, unrest and many unresolved issues, we would like to invite our neighbours in Nettleham to get together, light a candle (if they so wish) and just stand with us, or pray silently for our families, homes, community, Nation and Churches during this time.

Give your Mug a Hug… A group of ladies from the Creative Fellowship, who meet each Wednesday afternoon at Nettleham Methodist Church, have been making Mug Hugs to raise awareness of Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight which runs this year from 25 February to 10 March.

We get together over a cup of tea (Fairtrade of course), share a short reading or poem and chat while doing our crafts.

The group (aka the Crafty Ladies) has been meeting for over 10 years now throughout the year to share their love of crafts and to learn new skills from each other.

Past projects include patchwork and sewing (do you remember the owl doorstops featured in a previous edition of Nettleham News?), knitting, crochet, card-making, papercraft and painting on paper and fabric.

We often make hand-made gifts to sell at the monthly coffee mornings which raises much needed extra cash for the Brazil Mission - look out for Easter treats at the March coffee morning: Saturday 9 March 10.00am - 12 noon at the Methodist Church.

By the time you read this we will be halfway through Lent and Easter will soon be upon us. This is a busy but exciting time of year when we reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus, dying on the cross, and celebrate His resurrection on Easter Sunday.

PRAYER

“Come look in the box” I said to the boy, I assemble the ragged ranks “What is it dad? Is it for me? Is it a toy?” of my limited experience, “Be careful” I say “he’s a tiny little thing” And offer up my spiritual being.

And I wouldn’t have belived the joy he would bring.

Concentrated, yet immaterial, My boy’s love for his dog grew stronger each day, It rises as I plumb the depths; How I loved to listen to the games they would play.

Laying bare my soul, Little yelps, excited screams,the giggles of joy, Facing stark reality, Made me smile inside for my happy little boy.

Drained and divested.

Now life can be cruel and love can be lost, Pain, heartache and confusion are just part of the cost.

Having donated my highest essence, On a cold November day, by the front door, Ultimately I am restored, The boy sees his playmate pinned to the floor.

As I unify with the ultimate.

He stands there shouting, screaming, but nothing could be done, I rediscover the joy and purpose of existence, As he watches the frantic efforts of his desperate mum.

And vitality vibrates But the neighbour’s dog was fierce and mad, through my resurrected form.

It killed our little dog and part of our little lad.

This all reminds me that our little dog is dead, In memory of Robin Southward As I watch my boy sleeping safe in his bed.

Bed and Dripping I have a wee story to tell you I hope it your minds will regale.

Please believe no offence is intended When I call it a ‘hospitale’.

Once you’ve fought the good fight with a trolley On some erstwhile shopping trip, You’ll soon understand if I tell you That’s nothing compared to a drip.

A drip is a devil incarnate Attached to the hand or the arm, A four wheeled contrivance invented To stop you maintaining your calm.

You think it’s conveniently sited On the handiest side of the bed But your next, most pressing, requirement Is on the reverse side instead.

The tricks to manoeuvre the monster Discreetly along to the end Where, to your chagrin, you discover The wheels simply lock round the bend.

Just trying to wash can be tricky.

First you detach from the mains, Zig-zag your way to the wash room And squeeze through the door with great pains.

How now to be rid of your jacket, The danger of splash to relieve?

You wriggle and squirm to no purpose The darn thing won’t fit through the sleeve!

I’ll leave out the goriest details One ends and another begins.

Whatever you try with each problem Be sure the machine always wins.

Yet, when the nurse finally freed me A moment so dear to my heart In a magical tide of ball bearings One wheel fell completely apart!

The two poems at the left came from an anthology at the end of a book titled ‘Bright Boots’ by Fred Gresswell.

He acknowledged most of the poems, but not these two. I don’t know if that was because he had written them, or because he did not know the author - it was not made clear.

I’m not sure that I agree with him on the subject of the best-ever bridge hand!

Nettleham Cricket As I write this report in January, with snow lying on the ground and sub-zero temperatures outside, the cricket season feels a long way off.

As with many clubs, the winter is used for preparation for the forthcoming season both on and off the field and November saw the conclusion of the 2012 season with the Senior Presentation Evening and meal held at Mulsanne. The awards were: Saturday 1st XI Batting Award Dave Manby Saturday 1st XI Bowling Award Juan Grobbelaar Saturday 2nd XI Batting Award Simon Grocott Saturday 2nd XI Bowling Award Alex Willerton Sunday 1st XI Batting Award Danny McCardell Sunday 1st XI Bowling Award Jack Bayliss Sunday 2nd XI Batting Award Danny McCardell Sunday 2nd XI Bowling Award Sam Toofony Fielder of the Year Tom Dalton All Rounder of the Year Alex Willerton Junior Clubman of the Year Tom Lea Senior Clubman of the Year Danny McCardell Presidents Award Chris Brown In a difficult season severely interrupted by the heavy rain, the ball ruled over the bat and Simon Grocott was the only Nettleham batsmen to come in the top 25 league averages, coming 23rd with an average of 30.23.

However, the bowlers faired a lot better where overseas player Juan Grobbelaar had an outstanding season for the Saturday 1st XI. He was the leading wicket taker in the Lincolnshire Premiere League bowling 222 overs, taking 76 wickets (45 bowled, 22 caught, 9 lbw) for 586 runs conceded at an average of only 7.71, topping the averages as well.

He was also top of the league highest wickets in an innings with figures of 8 wickets for 16 runs against South Kelsey and another haul of 8 wickets for 33 runs against Alford. In the George Marshall trophy he also returned the best bowling figures of the competition with another 7 wicket haul against South Kelsey for 16 runs, and a further 6 wickets for 30 runs against Cleethorpes.

Opening the bowling for Nettleham 1st XI from the other end to Juan was James Pickering, who finished 2nd in the Premier League bowling averages.

He bowled 192 overs and took 42 wickets (16 bowled, 18 caught, 8 lbw) for 639 runs conceded, at an average of 15.21 - an excellent return. His best figures were 8 wickets for 28 runs against Caistor.

Dave Manby won the batting averages keeping wicket for the 1stXI, coming 11th in the league fielding averages with a total of 12 catches and a stumping. Similarly, Danny McCardell won the Sunday batting awards whilst keeping wicket, coming 8th in the fielding averages with 14 catches.

Nettleham’s commitment to junior cricket is demonstrated in their development of young players into the senior teams, where Alex Willerton deservedly won the ‘All Rounder’ award. Not only did he win the 2nd XI bowling award, but has opened the batting for the U15 Lincolnshire Junior County side with a respectable average of 22.

Just as importantly, these awards are also presented to members who help make the cricket club run smoothly off the field, and whose work often goes unnoticed, but are a vital contribution to the club. Congratulations to Tom Lea, Danny McCardell and Chris Brown on their awards.

These need to be supported by all junior and senior teams, and are an excellent way of team building. It is doubtful that the club will be able to afford an overseas player next season unless a sponsor is found, and the increase in the ground rent and hire of the Mulsanne pavilion by the Parish Council will stretch finances even further.

The club must continue to develop its youth section, and senior players and coaches should assist to develop the club and maintain the standard and level of teams. Parent help is always appreciated and an U9 team admin manager will be needed next season, please contact a member of the committee if you are willing to help with this, or in any other capacity.

Club: Winter 2012 repairs to the cricket square and outfield. The pitch has grown well and has been spiked and fertiliser applied to feed it.

The new sightscreens obtained through grants and fund-raising have been taken down, stored and cleaned, and maintenance of the machinery has been carried out before being stored.

The area around and inside the nets needs approx £2.5k worth of work doing before the spring, and sponsors/grants will need to be obtained to ensure these practice nets are in good order for the coming season.

This year the indoor cricket winter nets will be held at Lincoln Christ Hospital School on Friday evenings for Juniors and Wednesday evening for seniors.

A small charge will be made to help cover the cost.

Commencing 18 January to 22 February, and 15 to 22 March the U9s & U10’s will be with a soft ball between 6.30pm and 8.00pm, and the U11’s & U13’s with a hard ball between 8.00pm and 9.30pm.

Senior nets will commence 23 January to 20 February, then 13 March to 27 March between 8.00pm and 10.00pm.

The junior signing-on night is on Friday 12 April at 7.30pm at Mulsanne, and junior training starts on Friday 19 April between 6.30pm and 8.00pm also at Mulsanne.

The junior kwik cricket tournament will be held on Friday 2 August, coinciding with the release of the balloons from the fund-raising event.
