The next (winter) edition comes out in the first week of December, just in time for Christmas, so I do hope that there will be lots of contributions on a festive theme for inclusion in this edition.

It can be anything - articles, short stories, photographs, poems, recipes, puzzles, jokes - the list just goes on.

So don’t hold back - let’s make this a bumper festive edition to cheer the spirit in the dark days of winter!

Ray Sellars It was with great sadness that the death of Ray Sellars on 5 July 2012, after a brief illness, was reported to Nettleham News.

Ray was a very well-known and respected resident of the village and our condolences go to his family. He will be sadly missed.

He contributed sterling service to the village over many years as County, District and Parish Councillor, together with his unstinting voluntary work for the Village Hall Committee.

The funeral service took place on Wednesday 18 July 2012 at All Saints Church, followed by a private commital at Lincoln Crematorium. A celebration of Ray’s life was subsequently held later the same day at the Black Horse public house in the village. His family would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kind and heartfelt condolences and also for their generous donations in remembrance of Ray to St Barnabas Hospice and Marie Curie Cancer Care (see Readers’ Letters page 9).

A colleague of Ray, West Lindsey District Councillor David Cotton, gave a moving eulogy at the service and this is reproduced in full on pages 44/45.

Nettleham Summer Events Both Nettleham Carnival and Nettleham Jubilee Street Party have taken place since the last edition. Despite the dire summer weather this year, both events were a great success and you can read all about them on pages 34/35 and 32, 36/37 respectively.

Coronation Souvenirs There is an interesting email from Marion Jones in Australia on page 9, where she recalls receiving a Coronation teaspoon whilst a child in Nettleham, as a souvenir of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She seems to remember that her sister received a coronation New Testament.

Personally speaking (and I was at Infant School at the time!) I received a hardback book with a navy blue linen cover with gold-embossed lettering containing text and photographs about the royal family, all printed in black and white then, of course! I must still have it somewhere (probably gathering dust in the attic!).

Nettleham Problems Nettleham residents may perhaps believe that problems and threats relating to the village today, for instance vehicle intrusion on The Green, potentially dangerous traffic, new building developments, etc, are of modern origin.

However, on page 64 a number of old press cuttings are reproduced which illustrate that this is not necessarily the case, some having actually been very contentious subjects in Nettleham for many years. Where known, the date and origin of each press cutting is given, but some remain unknown.

The cuttings were discovered amongst the effects of Kath Hesketh, a well-known village resident who sadly died last year.

I am very grateful to David Hammond, nephew of Kath, for enabling their publication in this magazine.

Nettleham Handbook and Directory Included in the centre of this autumn edition of Nettleham News magazine is an updated version of the annual Nettleham Handbook & Directory.

It provides comprehensive details about all kinds of clubs, societies, special interest groups and other organisations in and around the village, together with useful information about local amenities and community facilities.

All the update information received over the past year has been included, but if you find any errors or omissions, do please let me know and corrections will be published in the next (winter) 2012 edition of the magazine.

Many Thanks Ken Ken Harrison, who for many years has been Treasurer for Nettleham News has decided, for health reasons, to step down as Treasurer of the magazine.

I would like to extend my very sincere thanks for his invaluable assistance in the financial administration of this publication over the years.

Ken, together with his wife Ann, also assisted with the counting and distribution of the magazine. Ann will continue with this for the present time and the position of Treasurer will be very kindly taken over

by Patrick Donnelly, a retired neighbour of Ken, who was an accountant during his working life and will ensure that the financial administration of Nettleham News continues to remain well-organised into the future.

Parish Council News With a very variable summer now upon us, it’s hard to know what to expect in which season, but like life itself the Nettleham Parish Council quarterly report continues undeterred by the weather.

Speaking of Life...

It was with sadness and regret that we heard of the illness and subsequent passing of Ray Sellars, County and District Councillor and previously long-serving Parish Councillor.

At a very well-attended service many moving tributes were paid to Ray’s lifetime of work in the public eye, and there is no doubt that he will be missed right across the county and particularly in Nettleham.

Police Headquarters Proposals New Police Station At a packed Village Hall on 24 May 2012 an Extraordinary meeting of the Parish Council was held specifically to discuss these proposals. The Minutes of that meeting are on the Parish Council’s website, but in essence the police presented their case and proposals for the new police station, members of the public had an opportunity to comment on the many aspects of concern, and the Parish Council passed the following resolution: (1) The Parish Council requests that the Lincolnshire Police Authority defers further action in relation to this project until the new Police Commissioner has been appointed; (2) In any event, meaningful dialogue needs to be held with the Parish Council before any decision is taken to submit a planning application; and (3) In the meantime the Parish Council is opposed to the current proposals formulated by the Lincolnshire Police Authority.

Since then regular contact has been maintained with Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire Police Authority requesting the latest position, thereby maintaining the requirement for meaningful dialogue.

To date Lincs Police Authority has stated that no further progress has been made.

Residential Development Proposals Over the last few months informal exploratory meetings have been held with developers (at their request) interested in drawing up proposals for further residential development in the village. No firm proposals were put forward at this stage, and both developers were appraised of the way in which the Parish Council would deal with planning applications. Their attention was also drawn to the existing Village Design Statement and the current situation on the preparation of a Neighbourhood Plan.

Best Kept Village Competition We are now entering the third and final month of judging for this year’s competition.

At the time of writing we have just been informed that we have got through the first of the three rounds. The Council would like to thank everyone for all their efforts in making Nettleham so attractive and well kept.

Trees: Western Power and Replacements During late spring we were consulted at very short notice by contractors working for Western Power, the company responsible for the overhead power lines in the village. Many of these lines had become obstructed by tree growth, and it was necessary for the trees to be dealt with, to avoid potential accidents.

In consultation with the Council’s Honorary Tree Advisor, and responsible officers from the District and County Councils, agreement was reached on most of the proposed work.

We could not agree on some cases involving the felling of trees on the highway verge.

The County Council insisted on this. In many other cases the Parish Council’s suggestions as to trimming were accepted.

Western Power have offered replacement trees and this offer will be taken up once we have reached an agreement over positioning.

It appears at present that Lincs County Council’s current policy will not permit future tree planting underneath overhead cables, irrespective of tree variety.

Parking The ongoing question of how to deal with the parking problems in the village has been the subject of a number of meetings between the Parish Council and residents, businesses, the police and the County Council.

With regard to the village centre the position at the end of July is that the Parish Council is preparing suggestions to put to the County Council for additional yellow lines as follows: 5

A single yellow line would mean that vehicles would not be able to park for a prescribed time period, normally 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Saturday and a double yellow line would mean no parking at any time.

Also a suggestion will be put to the County Council to make Church Street and The Green a one-way system, whereby cars would enter these areas from the south and west via Vicarage Lane. The Council are aware that this idea has been investigated previously, but wanted to give Lincs County Council the various options available.

It was also suggested that the village centre have a 20mph speed limit.

There is no doubt that a full solution to this problem is probably not possible to the satisfaction of everyone, and that a compromise is the only possible result.

The Parish Council believes that the proposal as now formulated should help ease traffic problems, whilst retaining an adequate amount of parking near the village centre.

The outcome of the consultation with Lincs County Council’s Highways Dept will be discussed at a future Parish Council meeting.

At All Saints Lane a number of complaints have been received from residents in this area regarding the traffic and parking concerns during the Infant School arriving and leaving times. Further to consultation with Nettleham Infant School, Nettleham Neighbourhood Policing Team, Lincolnshire County Council’s Highways Dept, and Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, the following actions were agreed: 1. Contact the Nettleham Policing Team to request additional police presence at starting and leaving times, to get the message over about not parking in the Safety Zone and 2. To seek additional police presence to continued on page 7

enforce the incidents of parking too close to the various junctions and any observed obstructions of driveways.

3. Contact the Infant School requesting that the ‘Walk to School’ initiatives to reduce car use be integrated as soon as possible.

4. Contact LCC’s Highways Dept requesting they re-consider the re-instatement of the layby outside the Infant School and the creation of a further layby outside Linelands or Church View on All Saints Lane.

Skate Park The Skate Park Working Group continues to make progress in this project and the youngest member of the group, Tom Booth, has produced potential designs for a skate park. A proposal for locating a potential skate park on the football training area at Mulsanne Park will be presented to the Mulsanne Park User Committee in September.

Sudbrooke Parish Council also has a representative on the Working Group and it is anticipated that joint financial contributions will be sought towards the cost of a skate park, as well as funding applications.

Bishops Palace Thanks to the efforts of Parish Councillor John Evans a total of £31,000 in grant funding has now been obtained towards the

development of the Bishops Palace site (see article in the summer Nettleham News).

Details on the present situation on progress can be found on page 25.

Community Action Volunteer Fund The Parish Council is regularly asked about the availability of grants for various groups, and indeed the Council has its own small fund, publicised previously in Nettleham News. Residents, and members of volunteer groups in particular, may wish to know about the West Lindsey District Council’s Community Action Volunteer Fund, which can award a grant of up to £250 to be used for activities that bring the community together, for example setting up a residents group or gardening club, or carrying out small improvements to community assets and projects involving volunteers that promote community action. Details are on the WLDC website (search for Community Action Volunteer Fund).

Flower Tub Sponsorship The Parish Council is very grateful for the continued sponsorship of the tubs on the Church Street bridge by Rudies Roots.

We are also very pleased that Nettleham Gardeners’ Association have sponsored the summer planting of the tubs on Vicarage Lane outside the Co-op. The Association normally meets on the first Wednesday of each month in the Old School Hall.

From Margaret in Watford I loved ‘The Green Thing’ article in the summer edition of Nettleham News and it conjured up lots of past memories.

I remember how very important the ‘wireless’ was when I was growing up.

My first memory was when the Prince of Wales made his abdication speech. I was at school and the teacher brought a ‘wireless’ into the classroom for us to listen to.

Then the day war was declared in 1939 as we gathered round to hear the fatal words: “We are at war with Germany”.

My dear father was sad as he had fought in the awful 1914 war and knew that this would change our lives. Who could forget Churchill’s speeches? “We shall never surrender” still sends a shiver down my spine and King George’s wonderful news broadcast in 1945 when the war was over.

So with all the modern technology, I do not underestimate the power of the radio (as it’s called now).

In 1942 I acquired an American penfriend.

Her name was Ruth and she was born and still lived in New Orleans. During the war, she sent me some magical parcels: nylon stockings, Camel cigarettes, glossy film magazines and, in 1947 when I married, Ruth sent dried fruit for my wedding cake.

Coincidentally Ruth also married in 1947 and moved to Las Vegas.

Speed Awareness Via email Tuesday 15 May 2012 I would just like to say what a brilliant idea it was to put a speed awareness sign on Washdyke Lane recently.

It is a pity it isn’t a permanent fixture there with a camera attached, as it certainly slowed MOST vehicles down, although there were the odd few that still went through at over 40mph, but then I suppose, to some, a flashing number followed by a smiley/sad face bears no threat at all.

Warning Bell This year has been terrible for breeding birds many broods have died in their nests from the cold and wet.

However, cats are also very predatory.

We have taken down the bird table in our garden as a cat was climbing the wooden pole. We watched it one day hook at a bird which was on the table.

Could cat owners consider putting a bell on their cat’s collar? Chris Packham on Springwatch suggested this when talking about the decline in numbers of birds.

Thank you also for the many letters of condolence, sympathy cards and flowers sent to me during this difficult time.

Ray served on all the Councils and many organisations in the village, particularly Nettleham Village Hall, over many years.

It has been a real comfort for me to learn how many of you held my husband in such great esteem and appreciated what he was able to achieve doing the work he carried out in the village and the surrounding area.

From Marion in Australia I was born in Nettleham in 1951 and have recently visited the village from my home in Australia.

In 1997, the 50th anniversary for both of us, her four lovely daughters wrote and asked us to be ‘Special Guests’ in Las Vegas at Ruth’s celebration party. Ruth herself had no idea we would be there, so imagine her surprise when we arrived! We spent a week in Vegas and enjoyed American hospitality and meeting all her family, who had flown in from New Orleans for the occasion (what a lovely ‘drawl’ they have coming from the Deep South).

Fifty years later in 1992, my dear husband and I visited the USA for the first time. We had a coach holiday which included one day in Las Vegas! I was so excited - at last I was going to meet this wonderfully kind lady. We met, loved each other on sight and had a wonderful day at her home.

Sadly, in 2004, her daughters sent me the news that Ruth had passed away.

I have had her name added to the Book of Remembrance at my local Peace Hospice.

I will never forget the kindness of this lovely lady, whose friendship lasted from 1942 - 2004, quite a span and my tears are still falling as they have been all through writing this letter (my mascara has run and I now look like a clown - some might argue that it’s an improvement!)

We were able to join in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on the village green and were very impressed by the pristine village centre early the next day, after the busy list of events the previous day.

Planning The Future of Nettleham Have a say in the future shape of our village: do you want to have parking on The Green, do you want more employment, do you want more shops, do you want more homes? Things will change because needs change - the only constant in life is change! So we need you to tell us what you think needs to be done to make this an even better place to live in the future.

There have been important and very substantive changes made by Central Government to the planning system. The changes will affect how our community could possibly change through new development up until about 2031. New Government legislation places greater emphasis on input from residents at the local level into the future plans for new development in their communities. The Parish Council are keen for you to be at the forefront of this legislation as any future plans for Nettleham evolve.

We want plans for the village to be based on what the people of Nettleham say they need and want.

A Strategic Plan for Central Lincolnshire By way of explanation and to set the scene for the challenges ahead, we have outlined in a very basic form the current thinking for the Lincoln area. Central Government accepted a request from the City of Lincoln, West Lindsey District and North Kesteven District Councils that their new Development Plans for the period April 2011 - March 2031 should take the form of ONE document. It will be prepared by a body known as the Central Lincs Joint Strategic Planning Unit (CLJSPU).

This means, as one example, that in this new large planning area provision will have to be made for 42,800 new dwellings being built up until 2031. Of these 18,800 are to be allocated to the greater Lincoln Urban Area (to include for example North Hykeham), 10,000 to Gainsborough, 4,500 to Sleaford and the balance of 9,500 dwellings (20%) to the smaller towns of Market Rasen, Caistor and villages such as Nettleham where infrastructure already exists. No specific numbers have been allocated to these towns or larger villages, but it is highly likely that Nettleham will be chosen for some level of development.

The Government aims to involve the local community in the decision-making process about the locations for new development. To achieve this they have introduced a new form of document called a Neighbourhood Plan.

Under the new system communities can help the CLJSPU by deciding where they think any new development should be located within the village. By way of example, if the CLJSPU say perhaps that Nettleham needs to make provision for X new housing units, the Neighbourhood Plan MUST make provision

for this number (or MORE if it is thought appropriate) but it CANNOT make provision for LESS. Although at this stage no specific numbers have been mentioned for Nettleham, we anticipate that we will be expected to make some provision.

What’s Happening in Nettleham Your Parish Council have decided to prepare its own Neighbourhood Plan which will be amongst the first in the country. They have set up a specific Committee under the Chairmanship of Cllr John Evans to undertake the task.

Community views are an important part of the process and the Parish Council thought it appropriate to inform residents of this opportunity at a very early stage. We want to know what you like and don’t like about living here, and what changes you would like to see. If there is to be more housing, or employment land, allocated in the parish we want to know where you think they would be best sited and why. What parts should we preserve? You may recall we produced a Parish Plan some 5 years ago and that will help provide some good background data to this one. This time the document will become a statutory planning document, if adopted following a referendum of the whole village and gaining a 50% plus majority.

Listed below are some suggested subject matters which are by no means final or exhaustive. The Parish Council would welcome suggestions for other topics capable for inclusion in the final document.

These topics are only for guidance at this stage, as the Parish Council will not know for some time (probably 2013) the scale of developments which it must try and cater for in the next 20 years.

The subjects which we think should be considered in the Plan include: (a) Housing ● Location and means of access? (including access to main roads) ● Type: small, medium or large?

2, 3, 4 or 5 bedroom, or mixed? ● Number on each development? (either several smaller developments, or one or two larger ones?) ● Design? ● Tenure? (b) Employment Land Is additional land required? ● Should the unused and allocated employment land on Lodge Lane be replaced by another chosen location? ● Location of new land? ● Size? ● Type of users? ●

(c) Retail Does the village need new retail units? ● Where? What type? And selling what, or providing what service? ●

(d) Education ● Impact of new housing on existing schools? ● Capacity? ● Car parking at and for the schools? (e) Open Space/Recreational Facilities Are there enough in the village? ● If not, at what other locations should they be built? ● Funding by existing residents, or from any new build? ●

(f) Allotments ● Are there enough? ● If not, what location can you suggest for new ones? ● Funding? (g) Nettleham Conservation Area Does this need extending? ● Is more protection needed for it from new developments and alterations without planning permission? ●

(h) Public Footpaths ● Define all those already in the village? ● Future safeguards? (i) Car Parking ●

There is clearly a lot of work to be done by the Committee and other volunteers involved, but it is critical that we get your views so that the plan can reflect what you think is needed for the future of our community.

Nettleham Woodland Trust: The Next Five Years The Nettleham Woodland Trust was established in 2006 and celebrated its first five years in September 2011.

We have kept to our original aim of developing new woodland for the benefit of the community. PC Wood enabled the extension of the belt of trees and shrubs on the south and east of the Police HQ field and a major new nature reserve is developing at Ashing Lane in Dunholme, just about within walking distance of Nettleham. Over 25,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, and even a 125m lake created. These amenities are already being well used by you, the ‘general public’.

Looking ahead In the coming months, Nettleham Woodland Trust members will be involved in planting in the new community area in the east corner of the Bishops’ Palace site.

Also agreement has been reached with with the Lincoln Rugby Club about creating a new community woodland between the bridleway and the pitches on their new ground on Lodge Lane. We really would welcome newcomers to our team for both of these projects.

conceptualisation, fund-raising, completing application forms and liaison with landowners, through to the operational aspects of planting and maintenance.

Like so many groups in this village and across the UK, Nettleham Woodland Trust is a charity without any paid employees and depends on the goodwill of its supporters and activists.

And in the background, there is always the possibility of new opportunities for woodland development on small or even large sites around Nettleham, if land is made available. This could happen tomorrow, in five years, or a decade from now, but it is important for a group like NWT to be ready to respond.

The current committee is certainly not minded to take on another out-of-parish new project of the size of Monks Wood, because we simply don’t have the capacity.

Back in 2008 we agreed to do this because it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create something special. However, we are now determined to re-focus on the parish of Nettleham and the environs of the village itself. We would like to help everyone to be in the position to walk in woodland, however small, no more than a few minutes from their front door. Those readers who walk around the edges of the village for pleasure will almost certainly be aware of some small areas where more trees could enrich our community, but of course turning a wish-list into reality is rarely achieved very quickly!

Help will be needed With the exception of specialist tasks such as building a culvert, constructing thresholds, professional design, and some legal matters, all NWT’s work has been carried out by volunteers from the community. This includes everything from

None of us is getting any younger! As with any voluntary organisation, it is probable that some members of the current core group will choose to step down for a wide range of personal reasons in the next five years, and so we are hoping that others will step up to the plate for their turn in one of the most satisfying of occupations voluntary work in the community.

Ultimately, if NWT were to fold for lack of activists, the projects in which we are involved would become the responsibility of the landowners, as agreed in the leases.

We must emphasise that there is no crisis now, but responsible organisations must develop succession plans. Basically we need to broaden our pool of regular activists to ensure that we have the capacity to take advantage of the next small or large opportunity which arises to create more woods around Nettleham.

There are already many possibilities for Nettleham people who would like to get slightly more involved than in the occasional tree planting event and help us to make our community even better through developing and maintaining green areas. Here are a few suggestions for readers of all ages to consider: ● working on the new public community woodland next to the Rugby Club from the very start in Februry 2013 - from the marker-cane planting onwards ● acting as an unofficial warden by walking through it regularly ● liaison with the Parish Council over the Bishops’ Palace orchard, copses and hedges - once planted ● joining an annual working party, eg mowing in September, planting in November, etc ● forging links with various groups wanting to use woodland for nature study ● general committee work ● assistant secretaries ● assistant woodland adviser ● publicity officer ● walks organizer ● quartermaster ● etc If you would like to have a chat with one of the current committee, please get in touch through our website: www.nettlehamwoodlandtrust.co.uk/contact.htm Many hands make light work. Hello Nettleham New St Barnabas Day Therapy Service St Barnabas Hospice now has a new Day Therapy service, providing support, information and some practical help to people with life-limiting conditions and their carers. Its aim is to support them to improve their quality of life, manage their symptoms, achieve greater independence, and make informed choices about their future care.

The Day Therapy team consists of nurses, occupational and physiotherapists, support workers and volunteers including complementary therapists and chaplains.

Following an initial assessment, an individually tailored programme is agreed, which can be provided through one-to-one support, therapy sessions and groups.

The service also offers people a chance to meet others who may be facing similar situations, in a relaxed informal setting.

Anyone who feels they may benefit from the service, or wanting to know more about what help is available, can drop in to any of the Day Therapy Centres listed below. People can refer themselves and can also be referred by their own doctor, district nurse, or any health or social care professional.

We are very pleased to have this opportunity to introduce ourselves to you and tell you a little bit about ourselves.

Alan is a minister of the Methodist Church and will be serving the community of Nettleham from 1 September 2012, taking over from Rev Mark Lawrence.

We originate from the South Derbyshire/Leicestershire border. Alan worked for his father for many years repairing domestic appliances and then as a lorry driver whilst he trained for the Ministry. His first appointment was in Leeds, then we moved to Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, on the edge of the Cotswolds, where we have lived for the last five years.

Julie has done various things: working in a bank before having the children, then as a teaching assistant, a receptionist in a Catholic Conference Centre/Hotel and currently as an administrator in the office of a garden centre. We have a son Jonathan who is married to Emma, they have a 1-year old daughter, Daisy, and live in South Derbyshire. We also have a daughter, Catherine, who lives in Leeds.

We are really looking forward to the move and to living and working in the Lincoln area.

Where has this year gone?

Despite the wet summer the garden looks as beautiful as ever. We have grown our own potatoes and made a delicious potato salad with them, the carrots, onions, garlic and pumpkins are all growing nicely too.

We now have a little nature area in a quiet area of the garden, with a log pile for insects to live in and a small wildlife pond in which earlier in the year we had frog spawn. The ducks on the Beck, which runs alongside the pre-school, regularly brought their ducklings for us to see which caused much excitement amongst the children and staff!

In the run-up to the summer holidays, we made flags in preparation for the Nettleham Carnival, and hosted our very own Olympic Sports Day. Sadly, due to yet more rain, we were forced to hold the sports day inside, but this didn’t take any of the excitement from the event and the children once again had a lovely day.

The children’s races were followed by the obligatory parents’ race, which brought out the competitive side of many of the dads (and one or two mums!). After all the races were finished everyone was served with home-made scones with strawberries and cream - thanks must go to Sandra Smith for baking them for us!

Just before we broke up for the summer we had our Ofsted inspection, which went really well and we are pleased to announce that we were awarded with a ‘Good’ which is fantastic for a new setting to achieve. The inspector gave us lots of lovely feedback and some great ideas for improving the setting further.

Here are some of the inspector’s comments from our Ofsted report: “Strong leadership and management results in a motivated staff team who work well together and are committed to promoting positive outcomes for children.”

“Children’s independence is promoted as they access the food table of their own choice and they choose and prepare their own snack. They show a good awareness of safety as they use specialist knives to chop their own fruit up.” “... children plant and grow their own vegetables in the outdoor area. They excitedly dig up the potatoes during one activity, counting out how many they have got.”

“Children are enthusiastic and motivated to learn because staff skilfully question them during activities and their play.”

We had lots of lovely weather, so spent most of our time outside, either in our beautiful garden or at the park. When we were in our garden we were able to harvest some of our carrots to eat at snack time - they were delicious! Sometimes we went to the Co-op and were able to choose what we were going to eat for our tea - the older children used their numeracy skills really well to work out if they had enough money and how much 17

change they would get. We also had duck races in the Beck which was very funny, the real ducks wondered what was going on!

On the hot days we had the paddling pool out which was very refreshing and we always had lots of fantastic craft activities to do whatever the weather. Lots of imaginative paintings and models were created, impressing everyone who saw them.

There are limited places for our Holiday Club, so to register your interest or book a place call 07521 858450 and ask to speak to Vicki or Suzanne. The Holiday Club opens at 7.30am and finishes at 6.00pm and there are full and half days available.

Local Volunteer Group Contribute to Scouts On 19 May 2012 the local Scout troop held their popular annual ‘Breakfast on the Green’ (highly recommended!) to raise funds for their various activities.

As treasurer of the Nettleham Luncheon Club, I was delighted to be able to present Mark Lawrence (Deputy Scout Leader) with a cheque for £1,000.

The Luncheon Club celebrated its 30th Birthday this year and, to mark the occasion, our committee decided that it would be a nice gesture to make a donation to the Scouts; in other words a financial gift on behalf of the more elderly residents to the young people of the village.

Mark said that they would like to build a climbing-wall behind the Scout hut, which would provide a facility, not only for the Scouts and Cubs, but also for the Guides and Brownies as well.

I think this is a great idea as it means that our donation will be of benefit to even more youngsters than we had originally envisaged.

The Nettleham Luncheon Club meets on a Thursday in the Large Hall at the Old School and provides the

opportunity for our senior residents to chat and socialise over an excellent meal in a friendly atmosphere.

The meals are prepared and staffed entirely by volunteers on a rota basis and we are in need of extra help.

Replacing the Duck Race of the last three years, a Boat Race on The Beck between Jubilee Bridge and Vicarage Lane took place on Nettleham Carnival day, Saturday 14 July 2012.

Organised by Dianne Towler of Beckside Newsagents, assisted by Dawn Andrews, the event raised over £250 for the Under 15s Nettleham Football Club.

Dianne would like to thank all the local businesses and parents who kindly donated prizes for the event and also the Nettleham Scouts for their loan of the boats for the event.

Especially with the anti-virus scam, a person will telephone and persuade you to let them have access to your computer.

They claim to show you errors on your computer and then get you to log them in, so they can fix them. Several minutes into the telephone call and after showing you many false error reports on screen, they will ask for money to fix the errors for you.

This is to get your credit card details, to go with all the confidential data they have already stolen from your computer during the telephone call.

Once they have both, they will steal from you - taking the money you agreed to let them have - plus a lot more. They will also sell on your data and credit card details to other identity thieves.

If you become suspicious during the call and don’t give them your card details, it’s still too late - you have already let them into your system and they will introduce a virus to your PC so that they can still access your system time and time again, without even having to telephone you.

Don’t, under any circumstances, let anyone you don’t know share access to your computer!

The Alzheimer’s Society in Lincolnshire can now carry out Carer Assessments and Emergency Plans on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council Carers’ Team.

We have a telephone befriending service for people with Dementia and their carers, together with support groups for carers across the county.

There was a bit of confusion at the supermarket this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the female cashier said: “Strip down, facing me.”

When the hysterical shrieking finally subsided, I discovered that she was actually referring to my credit card.

Not surprisingly, I’ve been asked to shop elsewhere in the future.

A grandmother telephoned the hospital and timidly asked: “Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?”

The operator said: “Of course - what’s the name and ward of the patient?”

The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said: “Alice Jones, Ward 5.”

The operator replied: “Just hold whilst I check with the nurse’s station.”

After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said: “I have good news.

Her nurse just told me that Alice is doing well - her blood pressure is fine, her blood tests are normal and her physician has said she can be discharged tomorrow.”

The grandmother said: “Thank you. That’s wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.”

The operator replied” “You’re more than welcome. Is Alice your daughter?”

The grandmother said: “No, I’m Alice Jones in Ward 5. No one tells me anything!”

Smiffy’s racing snail was not winning races any more, so he decided to take its shell off to reduce its weight and make it more aerodynamic. It didn’t work though, if anything it became more sluggish!

Three friends want to get into the Olympics, but they haven’t any tickets.

So one picks up a manhole cover, tucks it under his arm and walks to the gate.

“McTavish, Scotland,” he says, “Discus” and in he walks.

The next picks up a length of scaffolding and slings it over his shoulder.

“Barrington-Smythe, England” he says, “Pole vault” and in he walks too.

The third looks around, picks up a roll of barbed wire and tucks it under his arm.

“O’Reilly, Ireland” he says, “Fencing.”

It has been reported that a number of door-to-door sales representatives are calling at homes in Nettleham.

Lincoln Cathedral Exhibition

Some residents, particularly elderly people, may be intimidated by the forceful and aggressive tactics of these callers and may be anxious about speaking to them.

Readers may be interested to know about the ‘Mixed Palette’ exhibition in Lincoln Cathedral in September, featuring pictures, calligraphy and stained glass.

I wonder if you could use this in your magazine. We moved here a little while ago and find Nettleham News so helpful for tradesmen and also general reading.

The message is clear - if you don’t recognise the person, you have every right to ignore them and not answer the door.

This year, 7 of the 9 exhibitors involved live in Nettleham, or adjacent villages.

What a delight last Saturday night a brass band to listen to at the village hall none of your tat: NO! Award-winning Market Rasen Brass Band: NO LESS! Music from the shows: FANTASTIC!

If you do answer the door (and it is a good idea to have a security chain fitted and in use), you have the right to request written identification of the person and the organisation which they purport to represent. If it is a bona fide representative, they will not mind this verification request it is quite normal these days.

Of course, it is all too easy now with home computers and high-resolution desktop printers to create very convincing, but completely spurious, personal identification documents, even containing a photo ID of the carrier, but don’t be fooled by an authentic-looking ID or business card - look for a telephone number and call this for additional confirmation of the caller’s ID. If they do not have identification, or if for any reason you are suspicious about their credentials and they persist in their aggressive sales pitch, then you should simply say “No thank you” and firmly close the door. It may go against a life-long habit of politeness, but don’t be persuaded to continue the conversation if you are not entirely happy to do so.

And whatever you do, don’t invite them into your home - it may be that they are evaluating your property for a future burglary - assessing the security features, mentally noting the contents, establishing the age of the residents, etc.

If you have received such a home visit, don’t hesitate to call the police - they want to hear about these people in order that they can be checked and if necessary ordered to desist from their activities.

Most of these callers come from outside the Lincoln area and work in groups in and around the city and surrounding villages.

It should be said that most companies and other organisations no longer use this form of customer canvassing and sales - it has rightly been the subject of bad press and reputable organisations would not wish to associate themselves with these dubious sales techniques.

Be safe - do not answer the door to strangers, unless you are sure who they are and what they want!

Street Party I organised, with help of friends, a ’Street Party’ on the 5 June in The Hawthorns, off Larch Avenue, for the Jubilee, it went very well with 30 adults and 10 children.

We even had one couple that came up from London especially to be here for the celebration, which was great.

Unfortunately it was chilly and windy, but we were lucky as it did not rain until late afternoon, when folks eventually started to leave.

My husband did wellie throwing - those that joined in really enjoyed it, we had a quiz with prizes, plus raffles. We had more food planned for later, but the weather changed, so a lot of it was given away so not wasted.

One of my good friends, Gill helped quite a bit, her daughter loaned us some fab bunting and games for the children, which they really enjoyed.

Towards the end we had more helpers, cooking the potatoes, sausages, jellies and trifles. We had a typical English meal sausages, mash, peas, plain and onion gravy. Then all different jellies and ice cream, trifles and some of the ladies kindly made cupcakes.

We ended raising £150.00 which was given to Frank Connell to help the Homeless in Lincoln.

But what a shame there were so many empty seats, as it had been advertised around the village. They are coming again in October and then again for their Christmas Concert in December, so remember Nettleham - show ‘em what you’re made of ...lets have a few more people supporting them.

Volunteers Needed The Lincoln & Lindsey Blind Society are urgently seeking new Volunteer Befrienders.

Could you help to take a visually impaired person on a shopping trip, or support them in a community-based activity or perhaps a walk in the park?

We are a local charity serving visually impaired people since 1921 and we urgently need people to provide this type of help in Lincoln and the surrounding villages in West Lindsey.

Full training, travel expenses and support will be given.

Nettleham Bishops’ Palace The necessary funding has now been secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund and WREN to enable the development of the Bishops’ Palace site in Nettleham to move forward.

Readers who may have walked in the field recently will have noticed that a regular mowing regime is being implemented to establish the footpaths around the site and also create a ‘meadow’ environment in the adjoining pastoral area.

It is anticipated that the planting of native trees and shrubs in the pastoral area, where there is no concern about disturbing any important underground archaeology, will commence probably in autumn 2013.

Consultations with Nettleham Woodland Trust are currently ongoing to establish the number and type of trees to plant.

WELCOME TO NETTLEHAM BISHOPS’ PALACE

The work to improve the ramp adjacent to the Methodist Chapel will be starting shortly and will create a shallower gradient to enable easier access.

There will also be a ‘kissing gate’ installed halfway up the ramp at the entrance to the Bishops’ Palace site, with a shingle roof resembling a traditional lych gate. This will enable pedestrians, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters access to the site, whilst deterring horse-riders, cyclists, motorbikes, etc, from gaining entry. It is suggested that this gate be called ‘Bishops’ Gate’ Installation of the new traditional-style Lincolnshire post and rail fencing around sections of the site perimeter will also commence. The plan of the site, which appeared on the centre pages of the summer 2012 edition of Nettleham News, shows the location of the special bespoke ‘threshold gateway’ between the Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) section of the site and the pastoral area.

It will closely resemble the main gateway which was installed at the entrance to Monks Wood at the Ashing Lane Nature Reserve at Dunholme, but without the integral seating.

Solid timber construction and wooden shingles on the roof will create an imposing entrance which will feature interpretation boards containing information about the history and heritage of this important site.

It is suggested that this gate be called Princes’ Gate, commemorating the original creation of the title ‘Prince of Wales’ by Edward I whilst staying here in Nettleham in the year 1301.

We have now been working with our new clinical computer system for over two months. Despite a few initial teething problems, the migration went very well and we now have everything up and running again. We would like to say thank you to all our patients for your patience and tolerance as we learned the new system during the first few days.

We are delighted to announce that our midwife, Miriam Hunt has recently received a Commendation from the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) for her support to women and their families empowering them in their choice of birth. Miriam was nominated by several of her patients at the practice.

Nettleham Library News By the time this edition of Nettleham News is published the summer will be all but over, so congratulations to all those children who managed to complete the Summer Reading Challenge. If you have finished, make sure you have collected your certificate from the library.

Although times and dates are not yet confirmed, we will be hosting a Family and Local History Course in the library, so if you are a beginner looking to get started, or are more experienced but have come to a standstill, do come in and speak to the staff for more information and to put your name down, as spaces will be limited.

We are also planning to host more craft activities for adults on a variety of themes during the autumn and hopefully for children in the half-term holidays. Again, more details in the library, or please see the posters.

Flu Vaccinations Programme Our flu campaign will commence on 29 September 2012. Following the success of our Saturday morning flu clinics, we shall again be running our flu clinics on various Saturday mornings throughout October at both Nettleham and Cherry

‘Jubilee Walk’ Planted at Monks Wood On 10 March 2012, sixty small-leaved limes were planted at Monks Wood on either side of the walk leading from the main entrance to and beyond the Monk Oak in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee.

They were sponsored and planted by a wide variety of people from across our community. Over the coming years, they will create a shady canopy walk on the way into the main wood. Despite the extraordinary weather of the last six months, most of the trees are continuing to grow well, but, if necessary, the less successful ones will be replaced at the end of the coming winter.

A commemorative plaque has now been placed in the new avenue (see photograph below) and the names of sponsors published on the NWT website: www.nettlehamwoodlandtrust.co.uk/jubilee.htm Her Majesty The Queen was informed of the commemorative planting by Lincolnshire’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Officer Robert Bell MVO, from whom Nettleham Woodland Trust received the following letter: My letter...outlining the work undertaken by the Nettleham Woodland Trust since 2006 has been shown to Her Majesty, who sends her best wishes and sincere thanks to all those who have planted or donated trees. The Queen was also pleased to learn about the planting of sixty small-leaved limes to line the central pathway from the entrance to Monks Wood into the wood in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee and that the pathway has been named ‘Jubilee Walk’.

The Lord Lieutenant has accepted an invitation to visit Monks Wood in the spring of 2013 to see Jubilee Walk and the Ashing Lane Nature Reserve.

HELP LIVES Carnival Day for Nettleham LIVES Saturday 14 July dawned fine, but rather greyish and the rain didn’t seem very far away. A group of LIVES volunteers met on the Green at 9.30am to begin to erect the pergola and set up the stall. We were back at midday to put the finishing touches in place and to start blowing up the balloons ready for the race.

Our ever-popular Teddy Bear Tombola was back, which delighted old and young alike.

We had some very generous donations of teddies and business was brisk throughout the afternoon, which kept Mavis and Mandy very busy. They were ably assisted throughout the afternoon by, Sue, Shelagh Maurice and Edward. Meanwhile, Alex, Andy, Brian, Chris, David, Gill, June and Stuart were kept busy on balloon duty.

We sold 345 balloons this year - slightly down on last year. However, we only arranged one pre-selling day outside the Co-op on the run-up to the Carnival, but managed to sell over 200 balloons on the day. Despite the very grey skies, there were occasional glimpses of blue sky and the sun put in an appearance on a reasonably regular basis, so there was a steady stream of visitors to the stall. David, Alex and Andy also spent time talking to visitors about the benefits of becoming actively involved with the Nettleham LIVES group.

As always Nettleham residents are very supportive of our fund-raising efforts, but we are constantly seeking potential new Responders to strengthen the team.

From the people we spoke to there is sometimes a misconception about what is actually involved in the duties of a First or Intermediate Responder and the public are often put off because they feel they would not be equipped to help, or would have to become involved in dealing with ‘blood and stuff’. This is definitely not the case, the duties of a Responder (after being trained at LIVES headquarters first) are to

provide basic life-saving support, for example administering Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Oxygen Administration and use of a defibrillator to help restore the heart’s natural rhythm during a heart attack. Sometimes it’s as simple as offering some support and comfort to the casualty and immediate family whilst they await the arrival of the ambulance teams or paramedics.

Alex is pictured right showing a young visitor to the stand the basics of CPR. As the saying goes: “Get them interested when they’re young.” Unfortunately, we don’t know the young man’s name, but after some initial instructions, he proved to be a bit of a natural at it. Could he be one of our future Responders?

Alex also sent the balloons on their way at a little after 4.00pm (with the aid of a fairly strong wind on that afternoon, they were restless to be released) from just outside the Co-op. Normally the balloons travel towards the Grimsby coastline or occasionally towards Mablethorpe or even Boston. This year they headed more inland towards Gainsborough and Doncaster, so who knows where they’ll end up?!

We’ve not had any cards returned yet hopefully this is because the balloons are still on their journey, perhaps crossing continents. You may remember that in 2010 the balloon which travelled the furthest journeyed to Sweden! We’ll let you know the winners in the next edition of Nettleham News. Although special thanks must go to all involved, I’d like to particularly thank Mandy and Mavis, our very hard-working fund-raisers, as well as everyone who helped out on the day, or behind the scenes.

SADS Awareness and Nettleham LIVES The ultimate aim of any fund-raising that we do is to provide benefits to the residents of Nettleham. One of our recent

initiatives is in respect of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS).

You may have heard a number of stories recently about the syndrome. It is a medical condition affecting people aged between 12 and 35 years, where apparently healthy young individuals are suddenly struck down by heart problems from which they and their families were unaware they were suffering. LIVES have decided to support this awareness campaign through the provision of debrifillators to our two local schools and to provide training and support in their use by staff and teachers.

Individuals trained to use a defibrillator and having easy access to a machine, could make a very important difference between a life lost and a life saved.

David Wright and Edward Rouse are currently consulting the head teachers about this initiative. Nettleham LIVES will also be providing the funds in order to buy the defibrillators.

I’ll finish with my regular request for volunteers to come and join us. Whilst we welcome interest from anybody living in or around the village, we are particularly keen to hear from individuals who have some time available during the day - so the active retired, those working part-time or from home, or anyone who has some time to spare during the day and is keen to give something back to our local community.

The Nettleham Diamond Jubilee Street Party A shining example of the truly wonderful community spirit in the village today The organisers of the Nettleham Jubilee Street Party share with you some thoughts and memories and how it all came about.

“It all started one cold winter’s night. I had been visiting Margaret Clawson and over a cup of tea she said: “Do you remember the Silver Jubilee party we had on Washdyke Lane? I’m thinking about putting an advertisement in Nettleham News to see if there is any interest in doing one for the Diamond Jubilee. You will help won’t you?”

So with that I became chief minute-taker and mailer! I did not appreciate then the scale of what we were about to embark on!

So after Christmas we sat in Margaret’s front room discussing ideas and what we could do to get people on board. It was quite a mix of different people and most of us did not know each other, but we had become good friends by the end.

We wanted to get all of the community involved - the schools, toddler groups, WI, Scouts, local businesses, as many of the local people as possible and agreed to contact them through our various connections.

The ladies suggested the children, in true tea-party style, should all sit down together.

The schools had put notices in all of the children’s bags and we thought that if we got 50-100 that would be great - we ended up with 160 children and had to scour the village for tables and chairs! We had to solve the logistics of electricity and water for the teas and stalls, then find even more tables and chairs as the numbers steadily grew.

My best memory of the day was seeing that fantastic sight through the balloon arch of all the children eating their tea, with the sun shining as we handed out the medals.

My aching feet at the end of the day after we had packed away the last of the chairs and the rubbish bags! Not a very glamorous final memory, but that first drink at the end of the exhausting day was definitely well deserved on that fine summer evening.”

Julia Bell “Ellie decided to get involved to represent the toddler group, which she helps to run at the Methodist Church on Wednesday mornings, and she suggested I came to a meeting. It was lovely to see people from lots of different groups working together and enjoying some of Margaret’s famous scones!

Ellie decided it would be a good idea to have something for little ones to do on the day. She thought of the crowns and we knew we had to keep the costs down. She made 160 basic crowns from shiny card and she ordered jewels from the internet which were described as ‘self-adhesive’. When they came they had separate sticky dots to stick onto each one! We knew that was too fiddly to leave for the actual event, so it was my job to

apply a sticky dot on the back of each jewel ready for the day. I estimate I did 2,000 jewels! It was worth it to see lots of children sit down and make some lovely crowns (and not all little children either!).

I loved the fact that families could enjoy a whole afternoon of fun without having to spend any money, just bring a contribution to the tea. The boat decorating, organised by Janet, was very busy all afternoon and like the crowns was free to do on the day.

My view of the day was limited because I didn’t leave the crowns and the lucky dip, but all afternoon everyone was saying what a lovely time they were having.

At the end of the afternoon when we were clearing up, Pete ‘the fish man’ was still singing. My little granddaughters were dancing under the trees on The Green to his music. They thought that was such fun.

I was delighted a few days later to learn how much money we had raised for St Barnabas.

I think Margaret deserves a medal, she worked so hard.”

Judith Douglas & Ellie Davison “I was so pleased that I saw the notice in Nettleham News saying that Margaret Clawson was intending to organize a ‘Jubilee Tea-Party’. It stirred me into action! I asked my daughter, Charlotte, if she would like to be involved in the event and when she agreed, I contacted Margaret.

We went along to a meeting at Margaret’s home, met some lovely people, and enjoyed a Pimms and a cream scone! The planning started, and gradually everything began to fall into place.

The most memorable image I have of that wonderful day is looking down at the long table, with over 160 children having a fantastic time, with the sun shining (finally) and our lovely church in the background.

I am so pleased that I was able to contribute to a day that will be part of the history of Nettleham, and also that I got to know a wonderful lady like Margaret.”

Stephanie & Charlotte Rouse “I heard about this via Nettleham Parish Council as part of Threshold’s monthly coffee mornings. We wanted to do something for the Jubilee and the council suggested we get in touch with Margaret. As I couldn’t be there on the day, the most memorable part for me was eating fab cake at the planning meetings. I enjoyed getting to know some new people and seeing how a group of relative strangers can pull together to make something work really well to benefit the community. My best memories were dashing around finding teddies, wondering if we had got it all right (or if we had missed anything!) and praying for good weather.”

“When I enquired if there would be any village celebrations to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, I was put in touch with Margaret Clawson, who always arranges a splendid annual Strawberry Tea to help raise funds for the local hospice.

At my first meeting in Margaret’s home I realised a lot of work had already been put into arranging for road closures; applying for grants; sending invitations to all the pupils at the Nettleham Schools and seeking sponsorship from local businesses.

As the weeks went by, the group of volunteers grew and we retreated to the larger space of the Black Horse! I so enjoyed meeting new faces from the village; the preparatory events such as the champagne launch of the QE3 (our first boat design) on the Beck and the wrapping of all the sweet parcels for the bran-tub, before the AMAZING afternoon itself.

A group of kind men had made sure that the bunting was put up and that all the tables and chairs were transported to and from Church Street for the 160 children to enjoy a celebratory tea with a special Jubilee box of goodies to take home. The strawberry tea and stalls, games, face-painting and music on Monday 4 June - many happy memories.”

A Dismal Summer It seems that the overcast skies and wet weather conditions of the past summer have dealt a serious blow to many of our butterfly species.

Timeout Club

This year I have not seen a single Small Tortoiseshell or Peacock butterfly in the garden where I live. A Brimstone was spotted very early in the year as usual, but since then only Whites, a single Blue and, most unusually, a Large Skipper.

Timeout Club has been supporting the local community for 9 years.

From September, the club will be run by Jo O’Neill, who has worked as a volunteer both in Nettleham and the sister club she originally set up in Welton.

The new team include Co-ordinator: Karen, Playworkers: Daisy and Enya and Activity Leaders: Oli and Jonny.

My vision for the club I understand how hard it is to find good quality childcare that is reliable and where you are happy to leave your child whilst you are at work or studying. The aim of Timeout Club is to provide: ●

A variety of activities to suit all ages and stages of development

A safe and reliable service

A close working relationship with the Infant and Junior Schools, Beckside Pre-School and the wider community, to ensure the sustainability of our small local business.

Activities that we offer We aim to offer an exciting range of activities to suit the children and will always seek to identify what each child enjoys or would like to try for the very first time.

Physical Play Our children will be encouraged to be active - taking children outside as much as possible.

Our two activity leaders specialise in encouraging children to take part in team games, especially for the over 8’s.

They will develop a range of activities including bushcraft, orienteering and den making, as well as traditional ball games, kite flying and skipping games.

Arts, Crafts and Cookery Skills A range of art and craft sessions will be run on a daily basis and local artists will encourage new and different skill development.

Cookery skills will be introduced for the over 8’s and our younger children will be encouraged to have fun mixing, decorating and sampling the results!

Our goal is to encourage healthy eating and aim to introduce a quarterly theme. called ‘What can you eat this season?’

We will draw the fruits and vegetables that have grown in the gardens during spring, summer, autumn and winter and aim to grow and cook up some delights by trying new and different recipes.

Music, Dance and Drama Children will be encouraged to get in the groove!

We aim to invite some 6th-form and college students to develop their skills in running drama and musical sessions.

We may even encourage some teen band members in the holidays, to inspire those budding rock stars!

We operate within our own shared premises in the infant school, and offer a flexible booking system to ensure you are able to keep your childcare costs as low as possible.

Our thanks go to Nicola Driffill and the team in Beckside Pre-School who have worked hard with us to ensure the premises both inside and out look refreshed and ready to welcome you.

The club offers Breakfast and After School Clubs during term time and full days in the holidays and teacher training days.

We guarantee to remain open, regardless of our numbers in the holidays, so you can feel confident to book with us. We will join forces with the Welton Club to offer trips and inter-club challenges.

More may be seen in the coming autumn months, providing the weather is warm, dry and sunny, but I fear that the numbers of these beautiful insects have decreased dramatically in 2012 and may take years to recover.

It makes you wonder what kind of winter lies ahead of us - I’ve been looking at the horse chestnut ‘conkers’ with a view to storing some away in my winter larder, but there aren’t that many around, so it seems I might be going hungry in the months ahead.

I might have to visit your garden, to see what you’ve put out on the bird table for my feathered friends!

Most of us have seen belly dancing before, perhaps on TV, but not often live and not that close, and the ladies gave us a fine demonstration of how it’s done, seemingly using all the muscles from the waist down, and probably good for us all, if only we could do it!

They were followed by the Inis Cara School of Irish Dancing, thanks to Collen Roberts, and once again Caroline Paing, Education we were captivated by how Co-ordinator of SENSE charity for deaf/blind people young they were and how good the girls looked with those gorgeous dresses and all that hair. This year we got some older boys doing very, very flash footwork!

Saturday 14 July 2012 The Carnival day weather was gloomy, but it didn’t rain until 5 o’clock, when the heavens opened, so that was success of a sort, although we had the feeling that fewer people attended this year.

The procession had no floats this year, so since two prizes were available for the procession, we decided to award first and second prizes for Walking Groups. Beckside Pre-school won 1st Prize and £25 donated

by Wecando, and the Waitrose Trophy, and Nettleham Scouts won 2nd Prize and £25 donated by Carr Financial, both Nettleham businesses. These were presented by Caroline Paing, Education Co-ordinator of SENSE, in the absence of a Waitrose representative.

At 1.30pm Caroline then opened the Carnival and spoke of the Charity SENSE, for deafblind people, which the Carnival supported this year; it’s difficult to imagine an affliction more severe than this, when you can neither see nor hear.

by Flowers by Design of Nettleham, and £10 each, donated by Nettleham Plastering. These were given by last year’s Queen and Princess, Kassidy Farnsworth and Lilly-May Smith, who led the procession in an Audi loaned by Lincoln Audi and driven by Karl Ackerman.

The Fancy Dress was judged by Caroline Paing, and 7 years and under was won by Emma Eastman who dressed as the Olympic Flame, and won £10 donated by RF Lincs, and Leah Rawlinson won the 8 - 11 years category, dressed as an Olympic Winner, and won a £10 voucher donated by David Burghardt Vision Care. Caroline spoke to all the entrants.

Last up was ‘Mind Your Head’ - a rock band who played stuff we all knew, played it well and got an encore. Nice stuff, chaps.

It was now time for the Raffle Draw, and the rain started. That was a pain since gazebos and stalls had to be taken down in the rain, but we managed it, as we always do, and The Green was cleared by 6.30pm.

You may have noticed that the Village Hall is slowly but surely being refurbished and soon will have a new kitchen and lounge, and the hall floor will be refurbished too.

The Raffle tickets always say that we support a charity and the hall restoration and this is I should mention that almost all of Nettleham where the money raised at the Carnival goes.

Did you know that the hall is in use every businesses give us prizes, without which the week of the year? If you’d like to be involved Carnival would be a pale imitation, and the and feel good about it, please contact me.

Then the belly dancers were back again for a second performance and danced to Bollywood tunes. They also invited the spectators to join in and many did, including some young lads from the audience!

Nettleham Jubil A Great Day out The QEII Diamond Jubilee Party Monday 4 June 2012 “When I told my family that I was thinking about organising a Diamond Jubilee party they all thought I was mad! I had thought we could perhaps combine it with the Strawberry Tea that I do every June as a fundraiser for the St Barnabas Hospice.

I decided to put an advertisement in Nettleham News seeking volunteers.

At the first meeting we were looking for ideas and we decided that it would be great if we could make it a free event for the children and perhaps get them a medal and some goodies to remember the day.

We were successful in getting grants from Threshold, The Co-op, Nettleham Parish Council, Nettleham Lottery Fund and West Lindsey District Council - thanks to Ray Sellars, he was star. All of a sudden it was becoming a possibility. We found another star in Pete Sellars - who delivers fish from Grimsby in the village, by night he is a 1950’s singer and he offered to provide the music!

The day started with the children’s fancy dress party and with the crowns they had made. Many people had dressed in red, white and blue; we had decorated mobility scooters, an art competition, crowns and a boat race. Many people met up with old friends they had not seen for years and the atmosphere was brilliant! The music was fabulous. It was lovely to see all the children enjoying themselves. The day went by so fast - we were unbelievably busy on all of the stalls.”

Beckside Pre-school So long, farewell It’s been another eventful year at Beckside Pre-school and once again we are saying goodbye to some of the children who will be starting school in September. We will miss you all and would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to parents and families for their support and friendship during their child’s time with us.

We have enjoyed working in partnership with you and sharing in your child’s achievements. We hope you will keep in touch by popping in to see us. We would like to hear how you are all getting on.

Come rain or shine We celebrated our achievements this year by holding our very own Mini Olympics to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics.

We had sack races, egg and spoon races, throwing games, an assault course and many more activities that the children enjoyed. Everyone got a medal for taking part in the event.

On wet days (most of the term!) the weather didn’t dampen our fun. We were still able to enjoy lots of outdoor play.

We just popped on our wellies and were ready to play! We made low rope bridges between the trees, to practise our balancing skills and had fun on tyre swings and ropes. We made potions using the herbs and plants in the sensory garden, explored the garden for mini-beasts, made ‘muddy faces’ on the trees using wet soil and collecting twigs, leaves and stones to create the features! And finally, we had great fun making dens to play in with our friends and used the outdoor space to explore, make a mess, run, jump, hide, shout, sing, create and explore the natural world! Birth to Five Services were so impressed with our outdoor provision that they asked if they could display some photographs of activities we provide at a conference to promote “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds.”

Surprisingly we had a dry day yet again for our annual Teddy Bears Picnic! It was lovely to see so many children and their families.

We all brought our teddy bears to the picnic and had fun playing games with our friends. We had ice creams, cakes and biscuits. A special thank you to Mrs Padley for making those delicious fairy cakes and biscuits, they were very much appreciated!

Nettleham carnival procession on the 14 July. We all looked fantastic in our togas and making 40 Olympic torches and laurel-leaf crowns was well worth the effort! Well done and a big thank you to everyone who supported us (see page 34).

On the last week of term some of us visited the library for Bookstart Bear’s 20th Birthday and we listened to the story about the Three Little Pigs. The wolf puppet made us jump and we found it very amusing when he burnt his bottom in the pot of boiling water! We sang songs and had our picture taken with Bookstart Bear, who was very friendly. He gave us cuddles and waved to us! Thank you to the library for inviting us along.

We are looking forward to the new term when we meet our newcomers and welcome back the children who will be returning to us for their final year at Beckside Pre-school.

‘The Place’ to be Since opening our doors almost 3 years ago, Sarah and I have loved welcoming hundreds of Nettleham residents to our venue in the corner of ‘The Quad’ (behind David Burghardt opticians). We always hoped the unit would be a hive of activity for young and old, full of fun, laughter and learning. Many readers will think of us as the place they play on the Nintendo Wii during the Nettleham Carnival, others will think of us as the place their children come to for Storybook Days events. Perhaps others have used our facilities for meetings or to attend training courses, workshops, seminars, guitar club or some of the WEA courses we have hosted.

When we explain where we are located lots of people say: “Oh, that’s the place...” which is why we are now launching the latest development in our business: ‘The Place’. This will now be the focus for all the different activities in which we are involved. Unit 5, 22 The Green, will be the place to learn, the place to equip, the place to create and the place to be.

In recent months we have been awarded a contract by Lincolnshire County Council to deliver Personal and Community Development Learning (PCDL) specifically for residents of Nettleham and the surrounding villages. We have put together an exciting and varied range of courses, to which we really hope readers will consider coming along. Not only will Sarah and I be delivering some of the courses, we will also have tutors from here in Nettleham, as well as some others from further afield.

Community Trigger Launched West Lindsey has gained a strong reputation for its commitment to supporting local community action, enabling and assisting local people help themselves and others.

The council recognises that in most cases local people are best placed to solve problems in their neighbourhoods, but in some instances the public agencies need to step in and help.

It is for this pro-active approach that West Lindsey District Council has been chosen by the Government to trial the new Community Trigger.

Together with Manchester and Brighton & Hove, West Lindsey District Council is leading the way in supporting communities to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB). The newly-developed Community Trigger pilot will last for six months and is a partnership with Lincolnshire Police.

The ‘trigger’ invites members of the public to contact us if they have reported ASB three times in the previous 12-month period and feel they have not received a satisfactory service.

The ‘trigger’ is one of the government’s new proposed ASB powers and is aimed at empowering communities and individuals to challenge agencies dealing with anti-social behaviour. The new Police and Crime Commissioners will oversee the ‘trigger’ process when it becomes mandatory under the new law.

West Lindsey Councillor, Alan Caine, sits on the West Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership; Councillor Caine said: “I believe this pilot reinforces our drive to deliver opportunities for community action and to improve community resilience. We at West Lindsey are passionate about working with communities to deliver ‘real’ community led services.”

For the Love of Weeds Love ‘em or loathe ‘em we have no choice but to live with weeds.

We can spray them, dig them out, or cut them off, but their resilience assures their existence in every nook and cranny. Disturb a patch of earth, or dig up an old concrete drive and within a very short time weeds will colonise the patch.

The most tenacious weed I have seen lately was a single bright red poppy blooming happily between the traffic bollard and the road by the Brown Cow. No soil to be seen!

I am going to say it: I am fascinated by weeds. What is a weed? It is a wild plant which is simply growing in the wrong place. Their history is longer than Man’s and their fossilised remains have been found in layers of the earth laid down before we walked on two feet and waged war on these so-called rogue plants.

They are incredibly tough and will flourish where other more cultivated plants will swiftly perish.

Whilst I admire the tenacity of weeds (or wild flowers) there are some that are unanimously considered to be a ‘weed too far’. A prime example of this is Japanese hogweed, dangerous to our flora and the scourge of many a river bank. How many gardeners in the village try in vain to rid their flower beds of ground elder? I wrestle with it because it undermines other plants’ root systems. Yet it is not a native to this country. It was supposedly introduced by the Romans and used as a poultice to ease the pain of gout. Its traditional name is goutweed. Botanists are also alarmed by the spread of the Spanish bluebell which threatens to ride roughshod over our more curved and elegant native one.

Centuries of international trade have assured us of a widespread variety of foreign plants. Indian balsam, beautiful but rampant, with its exploding seed pods, came from the Himalayas. We love to see butterflies on the buddleia bushes, but this plant originally came from China and seeds around prolifically.

Weeds were certainly the first crops harvested and definitely the basis for the early medicinal remedies, often according to their shape! For instance, the bladder shaped seed pod of shepherd’s purse was used for urinary disorders and the knobbly roots of celandine were used to treat piles.

Cowslips, shaking in the wind, were used to try and cure the tremors of Parkinson’s disease. Curious or humorous as these herbal remedies seem today, they were widely used long before the days of creams and antibiotics.

Self-heal (the cone shaped purple flower which grows on lawns) was a real money spinner for pedlars of herbal remedies in the Middle Ages. The roots are man shaped and were considered to be special.

Heathie, the local nurse about whom I wrote a while ago, was a great forager and used herbal remedies, often advising local mothers to use one of her soothing herbal remedies for a child’s bad throat or cough.

Weeds were gathered for food before the advent of crops such as wheat. Some people still forage a great deal for these highly nutritious plants. Because of their ability to grow in hostile places, vitamins A, D and B1 are highly concentrated.

Chickweed, dandelion and nettles are good examples - chickweed contains much more vitamin C than most vegetables!

Soldiers in World War I, often country boys, wrote home to tell their families of the weeds that were sprouting after the disturbance of the soil to dig the trenches.

One wrote home to his mother that there was ‘piled earth with groundsel and great flaming dandelions and chickweed and pimpernels running over it’. Of course, poppies became the emblem of fallen soldiers and carpeted the fields of the Battle of the Somme.

Fumitory, the weed whose leaves resemble smoke, is even mentioned in Shakespeare.

King Lear, in his madness, was crowned with ‘rank fumitor’. To elevate weeds to the position of being part of a crown was surely madness. His crown also contained cuckoo flowers, nettles and hemlock. In Midsummer Night’s Dream, Puck squeezed the juice of love-in-idleness (wild pansy) into the eyes of characters believing they would fall in love with the first person they saw on waking. (Don’t try this at home!)

Nettleham abounds with weeds, particularly down in the conservation area where stone walls and the river bank are ideal hosts. By the time this edition of the magazine goes to press, the rosebay willow herb will be covered in fluffy seed heads at the side of the pool in the Police HQ grounds. After the bombing and fires in the war, rosebay willow herb soon took over the derelict sites and became known as bombweed or fireweed. Sudbrooke Lane is also bordered on both sides with a profusion of wild plants.

I do not think there is a lovelier smell than that of meadowsweet which looks like cream. It was much favoured in bouquets. and used to sweeten beers and potions.

Brides now sometimes use cow parsley in their wedding flowers.

We know that weeds in crops have to be controlled or we would soon starve.

Farmers often leave wild strips around crops, and wild birds, often particular about the seeds they will eat, have prospered. Wild plants, thought long gone from an area, have reappeared.

Weeds are prolific, some producing many thousands of seeds. These are spread in many ways to ensure their survival including by wind or by water and everyone with a dog has struggled to remove the seed heads of goose grass from their pet’s ears! Other seeds are coated with a sticky film so that they stick to birds’ feet to be moved around.

My plea, finally, is to ask Nettleham gardeners to leave a little patch of wildness in a corner of your garden. I have a patch of nettles and chickweed. Wild birds will prosper from the seeds, as will insects.

Ray Sellars 24 February 1940 - 5 July 2012 A tribute given at the funeral service at All Saints Church on Wednesday 18 July 2012 by West Lindsey Disrict Councillor David J Cotton Who among us here today, until a few short weeks ago, would have expected to be here to say a last good-bye to Ray?

When they first went there apparently the RAF signs and décor was still in place and they were taught in rooms titled the ‘Officers’ Mess’ or the ‘Sergeants’ Rest Room’.

That, I think, is the really difficult thing to come to terms with in all this, that it is not many weeks since Ray said to me that he felt a little unwell, and now we are here gathered to pay tribute to a man who was so important to so many and in so many different ways.

But his devotion became Nettleham.

Ray really came to prominence in the village when in 1966, with Geoff Drury, Ray went into partnership to run the Nettleham butcher’s shop at 2 Church Street. It would prove to be a long and happy time and a good platform from which he was able to launch his career in local government.

Why are we here? To say good-bye yes, but also because Ray’s life touched ours in some way whether on a daily, weekly, or more infrequent basis, but nevertheless he is a part of our lives and we part of his.

For that we can all be very thankful to have known Ray and been blessed by his friendship, his love, his affection and his devotion.

While we have lost a friend and colleague, a fellow councillor, a dedicated man, and whilst we feel his passing and his loss deeply, we must never forget that June and the family have lost a husband, father, stepfather and grandfather. Not always what we think of perhaps when we think of Ray, but he was a dedicated family man, proud of his family and their achievements and we can only imagine in this period of time, short as it has been, what his family are going through.

Many of us were fortunate to have been able to visit Ray during his illness, and apart from the obvious changes in skin colour and his eyes, he remained on the surface the Ray we had always known and loved. His sense of humour, despite the difficulties he was going through, never diminished and never wavered. He knew what the outcome of this time would be and approached it with a stoical and brave attitude of what will be will have to be he knew there was little anyone could do, but to make his last weeks as comfortable as possible.

Yet while Ray approached this in such a courageous way it was, as is often the case, those around him who fell apart and waited for the ultimate conclusion with sadness and desolation and that sense of helplessness that there was nothing we

could do. Had there been, which of us wouldn’t have given anything to help.

Typical of Ray’s philosophy on this was one night when he had finally got a diagnosis and knew there was nothing to be done.

We were talking on the telephone and once he told me what the doctors had found, I said I didn’t know what to say.

His reply was to say that it would be better to go quickly than to spend ten or twenty years in a nursing home - look at it like that he said.

Ray was known to so many people in so many ways and he was a great servant of all and believed in doing whatever it was he was undertaking to the very best of his ability.

In many ways, Ray was Mr Nettleham and it’s certain that the village will feel his loss a great deal, and yet perhaps only come to realise that over time when many of those little things don’t get done, or someone else has to step up to the task. But Ray didn’t do what he did for thanks, he did it out of a sense of duty and service.

Ray was extremely proud that he had his roots in Welton and retained some links there. He was one of the first intake into the, then new, William Farr School, and it was a revelation to him and the other pupils going from small village schools to what then seemed like a massive school, though in reality it was only a small school in comparison with today’s William Farr.

In 1989 Ray took sole charge of the shop and continued to run it until 2000, when on the 24th of June 2000 he sold it to Andy Handford who had previously worked with him in the shop.

But that was not to be the end of Ray’s association with the shop and butchering in general, as he would often be found helping Andy out at holiday times and during the busy run-up to the Christmas season.

Every so often we would have Liberal Democrat fund-raising events with what Ray called a ‘Lincolnshire Foods Supper’.

Those many years spent in the trade really came to the fore then as Ray, ably assisted

by June and others, would prepare all the old Lincolnshire favourites: brawn and stuffed chine, together with properly cured hams, followed by plum bread and cheese, all a delight for the senses and all prepared

by Ray. As Ray became better known in Nettleham he decided to stand in local elections. He first stood on the 7th June 1973 for what was to become the new West Lindsey District Council, representing Nettleham along with the Rev George Herrington.

A life-long Liberal way before there was any thought of SDLP or Liberal Democrats, Ray was an old-fashioned Liberal, even in times when to be a Liberal was far from fashionable!

Yet if his politics might have been cast in the mould of proper old-fashioned Liberalism, his outlook on all things was right up to date.

Ray was re-elected to West Lindsey DC in 1976, and then decided not to stand in the election of 1979.

After a break, which robbed this district and village of his talents and wise counsel for far too long, Ray stood again in the election of 1999 where once again he took a proper and rightful place in the running of the district. Ray served from then for a period of five years, but then he decided not to stand again in 2004.

His reason not to stand was that in 2001 he was elected to serve the Nettleham and Saxilby Division on Lincolnshire County Council, following in the able footsteps of Sheila Turner. Ray wanted to concentrate on his County Council work and also to allow Malcolm Leaning and Alf Frith to stand in the District Elections.

In 2011 West Lindsey moved to an all-out election regime and Alf decided not to re-fight his seat for Nettleham and so Ray decided he would stand again and was successful in winning back his seat for what was, sadly, an all too brief period.

In addition to all this Ray had also served for many years as a Parish Councillor for Nettleham and as a member and Chairman of the Nettleham Village Hall Committee.

He was also very involved in helping to organise the Nettleham Carnival, not least on the day appearing with his candy-floss machine to delight children and adults alike. He even brought the machine to Saxilby and participated in fetes and galas there as well.

Even if all that wasn’t enough, Ray had also been serving on the Lincolnshire Police Authority as a County Councillor since 2009.

That is just a brief whistle-stop tour of his local service in very many ways over many many years.

You might almost say that any fool can get elected to a Council which in many ways is true, but Ray was no fool and while a fool might be elected, their contribution would be mediocre to say the least.

Not one of those who has to speak at any and every meeting, if Ray had something to say he would say it, and because of his judicious behaviour, if Ray spoke you knew it was something worth listening to.

Ray was also always concerned that he wasn’t doing enough, and so feeling that as County Councillor for Saxilby and Nettleham, and while living in Nettleham, he felt he wasn’t doing sufficient in Saxilby, or being available to people enough of the time.

So we began a surgery on a Saturday morning once a month in Saxilby. People were slow to come to begin with and weren’t quite sure why we were there, but over time more people came along to ask for something or seek problem solving and so Ray became almost as well-known in Saxilby as he was here in Nettleham.

His work for the respective Parish Councils and meetings across the Division is not something to be overlooked or forgotten either.

Here again his steadfast dedication and service to them all was so very gratefully received. The comments made in some of those parishes where I and others have attended since his passing, have been full testament to that, and whosoever follows Ray, of whatever political colour, has some very big shoes to fill.

It can also be said that his devotion and service was life-long, as even up to the last week of his life Ray was still doing what council work he could from home with telephone and some emails. The one thing he worried about, as if he didn’t have enough else to concern him, was letting down those people to whom he had promised help, not least those relying on him for some financial help from his Councillor Initiative Funds, both at West Lindsey DC and Lincolnshire County Council.

Not Ray - his contribution was one of steadfast dedication and service for Nettleham and Saxilby and wider as a County Councillor and member of the Police Authority, for the people of this county.

Typical of this was his instruction to me, when I next attended at a Burton Parish Council meeting, to obtain a form they had and bring it over to him so he could sign it to ensure the Parish Council get the money he had promised. He was still talking about the forthcoming development on the Police Headquarters site and wanted to play as big a part in that as he was able.

He was wise and considerate in how he conducted his time on any Council.

Ray didn’t do any of this for himself, but always from his sense of service and giving 45

something back to the community. I often wonder and think it’s more than likely that this sense of giving something back was based on a community which supported him in his business and he wanted to repay that in any way he could and so turned his undoubted talent to service. He didn’t want publicity and wasn’t keen on appearing in the local press or on the ‘telly’, just quietly doing what he did best.

But that is not quite the whole story.

Recently a young lady from Saxilby has been fortunate enough to be selected to play at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games. With a lot of travel to and from London and the associated costs, she approached Ray to see if he could help from his Councillors’ funds. A request for some funds was duly submitted, but as this didn’t meet the strict criteria for a grant, the officers had to reject the application.

So Ray made a donation, of not inconsiderable funds, out of his own pocket to help. That is not the only instance I know of where he has done something like that and, had he known I would tell you that story, he would have been embarrassed and not wanted you to know, but that was who Ray was a generous caring man.

Right at the beginning I said that we are all in sadness and sorrow not least because of the speed at which Ray’s passing happened.

But we have to ask ourselves: what would Ray want today to be about? Mourning and sadness, or a celebration and careful, thankful reflection of his life and work?

I think the latter.

There have been so many tributes to Ray from many Councillors and Officers both in comment and written in email and all speak of his warmth and generous nature.

Most also speak of his being a true gentleman, that being clearly manifest to all, at all times.

A great man has this way walked and we have been fortunate to have his life touch ours in however small that contact might have been and the world is a better place for Ray Sellars and all he was, is and stood for.

That and his family are his legacy and we celebrate him and offer humble thanks and gratitude for all that he has done.

both on the political scene as a Liberal Democrat, and among the village organisations to which he had devoted so much time and capability, with the encouragement of his wife, June.

Councillors Sellars, who was born in Welton, but who had lived in Nettleham for many years, was well known in the villages, both as County Councillor (for the Nettleham & Saxilby Division) and also as a West Lindsey District Councillor (for the Nettleham Ward) and as a member of the Lincolnshire Police Authority, offices which he held up to his death after a short illness.

Ray was a friend to all, who will be much missed by the communities that he served so well.

Ray was always a firm believer in improving attitudes in political life by example, for the Councillor Ray Sellars benefit of his residents.

However impressive their support for It was a pleasure to have worked closely him in terms of sizeable personal votes, with him over these past eleven years.

David, dearest beloved brother of Sheila Moule of Nettleham, died after a short illness.

He was well-known worldwide and especially in Lincolnshire, where he frequently gave talks and lectures to a variety of organisations.

His wit, humour and expertise on radio and the TV programmes Bargain Hunt, Flog it and The Antiques Road Trip, endeared him to millions.

He will be missed by so many but most of all by his family: his wife Janet and his sister Sheila, together with Graham (brother-in-law), nephew Adrian, Amanda Barby-Moule, niece Sarah and Christopher Pitt.

Lincolnshire Counselling: Helping you find your way Lincolnshire Counselling is a local charity and has been in existence for 16 years offering professional counselling services to people in need and covering such issues as anxiety, bereavement, depression, stress and many other personal matters.

Our counselling rooms are at The Citizens’ Advice Bureau in Lincoln. The Counsellors are all qualified to The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy standard. They give their time freely enabling the service to provide a high quality service at an affordable price.

The service has a paid manager, however volunteers help staff the reception and volunteer trustees oversee the charity as a whole. The centre opens on a Tuesday evening from 4.30pm to 8.30pm and on a Wednesday from 12.30pm to 7.30pm Due to a number of volunteer trustees and volunteer receptionists retiring, we find ourselves in dire need of volunteer 47

receptionists to meet and greet the clients and to manage telephone calls during that time. We also need a number of volunteer trustees to help support the manager and help the service continue to develop.

You Just Have to Laugh!

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband wielding a fly swatter.

A government warning said that anyone travelling in icy conditions should take:

“Have you got any?” she asked.

A shovel, blankets or sleeping bag, extra clothing including scarf, hat and gloves, as well as 24 hours’ supply of food and drink, a de-icer, 5kgs of rock salt, a torch or lantern (with spare batteries).

“Yep, three males and two females,” he replied.

Intrigued, she asked: “How can you tell them apart?”

He said: “Three were on a beer can, two were on the phone.”

Plus: road flares and reflective triangles, a tow rope, a 5-gallon jerrycan of fuel, a first aid kit and jump leads, etc.

I looked a complete prat on the bus this morning!

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me, and we all could probably use more calm in our lives.

I just got back from a pleasure trip.

I took my mother-in-law to the airport.

A doctor on television this morning said that the way to achieve ‘Inner Peace’ is to finish all the things you have started.

I’ve been in love with the same woman for 49 years! If my wife ever finds out, she’ll kill me!

So, I looked around my house to see things I’d started and hadn’t finished and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of shhhardonay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of vocka, a pock of Prunglies, tha mainder of bot Prozic and Valum scriptins, the res of the Chesescke an a box a choclets.

My credit card was stolen, but I won’t be reporting it - the thief spends less than my wife did.

A bloke starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks.

The first task is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds. As he’s doing this, a huge fish jumps up and bites him. In fury, he beats it to death with a spade.

Realizing his employer won’t be best pleased, he disposes of the dead fish by feeding it to the lions...they’ll eat anything.

Moving on to the second job of mucking out the chimp house, he is suddenly set upon by the chimps. He lashes out with his spade, killing two. What can he do?

Feed them to the lions, he says to himself, because lions eat anything...and he hurls the corpses into the lion enclosure.

He moves on to the last job which is to collect honey from the South American bee colony, but as soon as he starts he is attacked by the angry bees. He grabs the spade and smashes the bees to a pulp.

By now he knows what to do and shovels them into the lions cage because...lions eat anything.

My wife and I went back to the hotel where we spent our wedding night; this time I stayed in the bathroom and cried.

My wife was at the beauty parlour for two hours and that was just for the estimate.

She got a mudpack and looked great for two days - then the mud fell off.

The doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn’t pay his bill, so the doctor gave him another six months.

The private doctor called a patient saying, “Your cheque came back.” The patient replied, “So did my arthritis!”

Folk were attending the funeral of the owner of car clamping company.

As the coffin was being lowered into the ground, a voice from inside screams: “I’m not dead, I’m not dead! Let me out” The vicar smiles, leans forward sucking air through his teeth and mutters: “Too late pal, the paperwork’s already done.”

Junk is something you’ve kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it.

Dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo.

He wanders up to another lion and says: “What’s the food like here?”

A balanced diet is a chocolate biscuit in each hand.

The first lion replies: “Absolutely brilliant today we had fish and chimps with mushy bees.

Fundraising for Link Romania Once again it is time to launch the Shoebox Appeal and we hope to do this at a Coffee Morning in The Old School Room on Saturday 15 September from 10.00 - 12.00.

There will be the usual stalls, cakes, raffle, etc, and, of course, a supply of leaflets and shoeboxes. Admission by sweets or chocolate please.

This year Link Romania has produced two different leaflets, one the usual Family Shoebox leaflet, the other to be attached to a shoebox specially for an elderly person.

After delivering shoeboxes for 20 years, it has been realised that many folk now live alone and so the request has been made for boxes specially for the elderly. Please feel free to choose whichever leaflet you prefer and sign the Gift Aid form to generate more funds for the charity, at no extra cost to you.

RB Camera Club: Just when one thought that every aspect of photography had been catered for in the club’s current programme - digital, monochrome, low-light, scenic, portrait, still-life, practical instruction - and all the other topics of this wide-ranging hobby, along comes a member of the Club on a ‘Show and Tell’ evening with an entirely new aspect for the club to savour. Terry Maidens offered a brief glimpse of his work in the restoration of old photographs and the recording of parts of Gainsborough for the Gainsborough & District Heritage Association.

Fancy clicking away at gravestones? Terry was responsible for the recording in 2008 of about 1,100 images of all the graves in North Warren Cemetery as part of a survey.

These photographs and accompanying background information are now available on CD to people researching their family history.

A year later, 2009, the Society decided that the next big project would be to publish a book on the history of Rose Brothers of Gainsborough, a large engineering firm specialising in the manufacture of equipment for packaging and liquids.

Did you know that Rose Bros manufactured cars in the early 1900s? The detail displayed in the restored pictures was superb and made one realise the huge difference between working practices of those days and present-day mass production lines.

The variety and quality of the materials used to convert into prints have been a constant challenge to Terry - some glass plates have produced brilliant prints, while some severely damaged ones required considerable repair before printing could be undertaken. But after all the patient attention to detail, there is the fascination of discovery, as until the material has been converted to a digital image and restored, the subject details may not be visible.

Two of my interests for many years have been photography and industrial archaeology. About twelve years ago, one of my long-standing friends, asked me if I would photograph parts of Gainsborough for inclusion in booklets she was writing on behalf of the Gainsborough and District Heritage Association and I was happy to oblige.

As the Heritage Association’s projects have increased in ambition, I have become more and more involved with producing images and prints for

Terry joined RB Camera Club a few years ago as he felt that it would help to improve his photographic skills (he says it has!) and together with a sustained interest in industrial archaeology has produced enduring records of industrial and social history which will be of interest to many not least the club, and Terry has promised to show more of his work at a later date.

Retrieving the Past manufacture of equipment for packaging powders and liquids. As part of this project I was asked to copy a collection of photograph albums from Rose Brothers of Gainsborough held in the Museum of Lincolnshire Life of which little was known of the contents (about 1,500 images). These required a lot of editing as the lighting conditions in which they had to be taken was poor. The collection included photographs of their packaging machines, cars which they had built in the early 1900s, and their employees. Gainsborough still has many ex-employees living there and people with links to the firm who have been very generous with photographs, negatives, glass plates and memorabilia associated with the firm. This led to me being asked to produce prints from these. Some of these were of very high quality, but others were faded, torn, and stained. I therefore had to develop new skills in order to produce prints of acceptable quality.

The Heritage Association now has permanent premises for holding exhibitions, a research library and for storage of their collection. It is sited in the Old Post Office, North Street, Gainsborough, which is gradually being renovated and modernised.

It is open on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is dependent on grants, donations and sales for its income and viability. Other projects have been completed, eg Gainsborough Church Schools, and others are being pursued, eg Gainsborough buildings and the River Trent.

Swan Siesta

Garden Visitors I have a lot of hedgehogs who visit my garden every night, plus a beautiful cat which eats out of the same bowl at the same time as the hedgehogs, but as the hedgehogs like to sit in the middle of the food dish there isn’t much room left, so she does get her nose prickled a bit !

Has anyone noticed the lack of ducks and ducklings in the village these last few years? The village just isn’t the same any more! I used to have two or three families

visit every year, but have had none for three years. Methinks skullduggery is at hand. I’ve heard various explanations the latest being ‘treated’ grain to render them infertile.

Happy to say that this year I’ve had one duck with ten newly hatched ducklings who visit twice daily. Unfortunately the ducklings are down to six now, but less vulnerable as they’re developing quickly and growing their adult feathers.

I live in a flat on the south side of Lincoln, which is a ten-minute walk to the fields.

I often walk down to the River Witham and gaze into the shimmering water.

Coot and ducks paddle along searching for food, their strong webbed feet make short work of the strong current. Summer this year has been a disaster. With a drought in April followed by too much rain in June, the water level is currently high in the river.

I have been following a pair of swans.

I saw them one day, on the opposite bank of the river, as they collected twigs and straw to build a nest.

Swans mate for life, and are very protective over their cygnets.

Several weeks later I crept quietly down the bank and crouched behind a large bush. This concealed me and my camera from the sleeping birds.

Swans are such beautiful creatures, with snowy white feathers. I took this photograph around noon when the sun was hot, a gentle breeze whisked up waves across the water.

I cannot wait to see the new brood of cygnets, I will take another trip to the river bank soon, meanwhile the pair of swans are enjoying a siesta, as they wait patiently for their chicks to hatch.

NETTLEHAM SCOUT GROUP In true scouting spirit the ‘summer’ weather has undeterred us from getting out and about.

We celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with a ‘Royal Gala’ for our fete this year. Lots of games and activities to take part in and picnic-style refreshments to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who made cupcakes, they were delicious. A big thank you also to Stokes Café for providing the coffee and tea.

We all got together with the Guide sections to take part in a Jubilee Campfire at Sudbrooke Campsite.

It was a special evening with a chance to share songs and fun sketches.

The Lincolnshire Co-op very kindly provided everyone with a big Jubilee Cupcake to take home.

The Beavers enjoyed a great sleepover camp at Sudbrooke Campsite as ‘Nature Detectives’. They hiked to Scothern for a picnic in the rain, hunted for items in the woods and found lots of interesting creatures pond dipping in the lake. It was very exciting sleeping in the pop-up tents inside the large building at the campsite …a very late night …and a very early morning too! Great fun!

The Nettleham Community Market in June was another great success and raised £130.00 for the Scout Group.

If you have not yet visited the Community Market then make a date in your diary for the next one on Saturday 22 September, 10.00am to 12.00 noon. There are a variety of craft stalls to browse and home-made produce on sale: jams, chutney, cakes, biscuits, honey, etc, all provided by local people. Stokes coffee, tea and

home-made refreshments are also available. If there is anyone who has a surplus of home-grown vegetables or fruit they would like to sell at the next market, then please contact me to book a table.

Scouting in Nettleham continues to thrive, which is due in no small part to

the continued commitment of a few hardy volunteers and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone involved for their invaluable assistance in making it another truly great scouting year.

The Autumn Book Review When the Children Came Home: Stories of Wartime Evacuees

by Julie Summers This book tells of the huge exercise to evacuate children from endangered cities at the start of and during WWII. It is not a record of statistics only, but full of real stories told by the evacuees themselves, parents and the foster parents who took in the children.

It is easy to look at the situation and fondly imagine town children transformed as they romped through buttercup-laden fields.

The truth was far from this; often children were left damaged and traumatised by their experiences and found it hard to adjust to new schools. Children returning to their parents afterwards were often like strangers and found it difficult to form bonds again.

Some children from city slums found themselves with wealthy families in grand country houses with servants. Returning to their homes after the war was often painful and many of them, embarrassed and ashamed of their parents, did not settle again. There are tales of reluctance on behalf of the hosts and even abject cruelty to evacuees.

Means of communication that we take for granted today were non-existent. Children sent a short distance away could still see the bombing at night and did not know if their parents were even alive.

However, there are also stories of very successful evacuations. Some parents left also and joined their children in the country, making a life there after the war.

This is a thoughtful and compelling book.

Cider with Rosie

by Laurie Lee Laurie Lee wrote this book in 1959.

Laurie’s father had abandoned his family at the end of the First World War and Laurie’s mother rented a cottage in the Cotswold village of Slad.

There she took Laurie as a tiny boy along with his much-adored sisters.

Dreamy and distracted, but nevertheless much loved by her children, Laurie’s mother ran a chaotic household, leaving Laurie to explore the beautiful countryside and become familiar with local characters with nicknames such as Albert the Devil and Percy-from-Painswick.

He closely details all aspects of the village from the intimacies of his family and the cottage and school. Every day was an adventure to them. A day out in Weston-Super-Mare is anticipated for weeks and the children gorge themselves at the Parochial Church Tea. Then we meet Rosie and Laurie movingly describes his rite of passage.

Despite privations there seems to be no hankering after things they did not possess. Their life in the village seemed self-sufficient and full of love. They make do and mend and money is eked out.

However, at the end, Laurie sees the future. He refers to the village shrinking, distances becoming shorter and the arrival of the motor car and the bike and the introduction of bus routes.

This is a poignant book and as technology leaps ahead, it becomes even more of a contrast to our current lives.

Mortal Engines

by Philip Reeve This book (one of a quartet) was recommended to me

by Joan in the library and is suitable for readers aged 11 and over. It is a very clever book and at times very funny. Set in a totally messed-up world in a thousand years time, it tells of whole towns gobbling up other towns in order to survive.

Tom, one of the main characters, learns that people he trusts are not always what they seem.

This leads him to live in alien surroundings resulting in a very adventurous time for him and Hester. Modern-day situations are reflected in the future, in which there is still prejudice against people living on the edges of society.

Philip Reeve invents wonderful new words and phrases such as urbivore (a consumer of towns) and static settlement which we know today as a normal house.

Tom and his fellow main character, Hester, thrown off a fast-moving city, live on their wits, have many adventures and Tom has to come to terms with good and evil.

The book contains adventure, romance and page-turning experiences in this futuristic tale.

Some of the humour may be lost on younger readers, so I would also recommend this book to adults. However, there is much to enjoy by readers of all ages and from the opening sentence they will be hooked and want to read on.

The Invisible Dog

by Dick-King Smith Dick King-Smith was one of life’s eccentrics, who loved everything about animals from a very early age.

This love has been passed down in his wonderful stories, written in nearly 100 books. Sadly he died last year, but he left this wonderful legacy of animal stories.

It’s a book suitable for any parent to read to their child, particularly if that child has an imaginary friend or pet!

A simple, delightful tale about a little girl called Janie who really wants a dog of her own - she innocently tells people that she is leading a dog around the village even holding a collar and lead!

The book follows her adventures as she introduces her dog to various local people.

She is determined to have a dog of her own and I would say read it and find out if she succeeds in her quest.

It is a touching picture of family life and her efforts to own a dog. It does not have the rip-roaring adventures of Philip Reeve’s book, but it is ideal for a 7-10 year old.

It is beautifully illustrated throughout and it is easy to see that this book could be ideal for a child learning to read.

Dick King-Smith was a teacher at one time and certainly seemed to know what sort of stories children enjoy.

Nettleham Art Group Annual Exhibition Nettleham Art Group held its 8th Annual Art Exhibition and Sale of Paintings in the Old School from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 July 2012.

The Group, formed in September 2004, continues to thrive, with 40 members and a growing waiting list. The exhibition was visited by 400 people, the busiest period being the Saturday afternoon when Nettleham Carnival was also being held.

Thirty-two paintings were sold for a total of nearly £900.00, twice the amount taken for paintings last year. Dave Walton sold five, Ruth Ashworth and Iain Burdon three each. These were all original work, framed and ready for hanging.

This year at the exhibition we decided not to include for sale a variety of other art and craft items such as unframed pictures, greetings cards, craft work and art materials as we have at recent exhibitions.

Items such as these will now be for sale at our pre-Christmas Art & Craft Sale and Coffee Morning to be held on Saturday 10 November in the Old School (see page 3 for details).

At this summer exhibition only new paintings were displayed on the main stands, contributions coming from thirty-five of the Group’s members. Other framed pictures were displayed around the sides of the hall. The new layout seemed to meet with the approval of visitors.

Comments in the Visitors’ Book were very positive, such as: “wonderful exhibition, well set out”; “there is so much talent in this village, it has inspired me to start painting again”; “an interesting and beautiful collection of work” and “the standard of work just gets better”.

Watercolour remains the most popular medium used in members’ exhibition paintings (43% of the total), followed by acrylic (20%) and pastel (15%). Eighteen paintings were completed in pen and ink, pen and wash and pencil and twelve in oil, demonstrating the diversity of the work.

Members continue to paint without regular tuition, painting what they want, how they want and in any medium they want. Help, guidance and encouragement is always available from fellow members.

This year, painting demonstrations by professional artists Michael Webster, Ash Buckingham and Dave Woolass, in acrylic, watercolour and pastel respectively, have been much appreciated by members.

Ash Buckingham painted a delightful Nettleham street scene, viewed from The Green along Church Street towards All Saints’ Church.

Without the help of so many group members who assisted in assembling and dismantling the exhibition and acted as stewards over the three days of the exhibition, it would not be possible to hold this popular village event. Many thanks to all of them.

This year, Sense (the charity for deaf-blind people of all ages) was presented with £225 from the proceeds of the exhibition.

New DVD of Bygone Nettleham Nostalgic film footage of Nettleham in the 1960s and 70s can now be enjoyed on the new 90-minute Bygone Lincoln DVD 4, produced by Blow by Blow Productions in the village.

The footage, totalling more than 22 minutes, features numerous scenes of Nettleham in that period, including the Boxing Day Pram Race and two Village Carnivals, believed to be in the late 1960’s and 1974. Also featured is the All Saints parish church fire of 1969, when fire engines blocked Church Street and firemen climbed on to the church roof to try and prevent smoke damage.

The Nettleham films are: Nettleham People and Places 1960s and 70s (18 minutes) Filmed by the late Jim Brown, a cine enthusiast active in village life. Jim worked on the housing services team of the old Welton Rural District Council and took delight in filming local scenes and activities on his cine camera.

He also filmed work activities including a colleague climbing up to clear a council house chimney. Today’s Health & Safety experts will be very interested!

This item has been augmented by Andrew’s own footage of The Green on Millennium Night, and on October 10, 2010, when villagers gathered on the green at 10.00am to mark that unique date (see photograph below).

party, which was also filmed. This item is augmented by a number of amusing still photographs of the racers and their ‘babies’ taken outside the Brown Cow pub (see photograph above).

The Pram Race was originally filmed by the late James Cheves, who also filmed his drive through the Stonebow, then still open to traffic in 1960 - another item on the DVD. Andrew has transferred the films from cine and early video to modern digital format and added commentary and music for the first time.

He also wrote, narrated and edited the material, working on the DVD over a period of two years. He said: “It’s been quite a marathon, but very worthwhile.

I’m very pleased with the balance of material and I’ve had good responses from a viewing panel.

“I’m so grateful to the original cameramen and also to their families for allowing me access to the material.”

Andrew has also dissolved Victorian and Edwardian postcard scenes of the village into the same view today.

Other items on DVD4 include a trip with WW2 Radar veterans to RAF Digby Museum, the only remaining wartime Ops Room from where fighters were scrambled to meet enemy bombers.

On the wall in the museum is the only surviving Air Ministry telegram to RAF stations announcing war with Germany!

Andrew first became involved in reviving the film heritage of Lincoln and district in 1993 when his first ‘Bygone’ product (then on VHS tape) was produced for the Centenary of the Lincolnshire Echo.

He was lucky enough to have access to film taken by his own uncle, the late Ron Blow, in the 1930s.

All Saints Parish Church, Nettleham The Soggy Summer of Symbols turns to Autumn September, and almost all the events of this remarkable summer are now over.

While the political and financial world struggles with major problems, and unprecedented drought and then summer rain and floods engulf the country, we, the public, have been cheering ourselves up by enjoying celebrations of many kinds - the Queen’s Jubilee, European Football, ‘Andy Murray’ Wimbledon, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and holidays at home or abroad.

All around us we have seen many symbols bunting and flags galore, especially at the Thames Pageant on that sodden day in June, the Olympic torch winding its way around the nation and all the pageantry and excitement of the Olympic Games themselves, with athletes from all over the world following their respective flags and wearing appropriate costume and symbols.

One might add another symbolic moment when Queen Elizabeth II shook the hand of Martin McGuinness during her visit to Northern Ireland.

In our homes we all have belongings which are symbolic of our family’s lives and our achievements, some of which are on display. One house I visit has the daughter’s PhD certificate displayed; another has an award from the Queen; one has engraved glass given as a leaving gift; all have photographs of loved ones.

Then there are other gifts - from children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, bought or made and given with love and so worth a great deal to the recipient.

In my house I have a small wooden cross which has, for me, an interesting story.

About twenty years ago, the church where my parents were married, where I was baptised, which I attended as a boy and where my father and I were in the choir was burned to the ground. The remains had to be demolished and a completely new church was built, utterly unlike its predecessor.

It was a strange feeling to think that the church is no more and that I shall never again walk in and see all the familiar architecture, furniture and monuments which I saw day by day and year by year during my childhood and, since then, at occasional weddings and funerals. I cannot imagine the feelings of those who have seen their cities destroyed by war-time bombing and found not only their cities destroyed but their families killed, too.

From the salvaged wood of the choir stalls, a parishioner made small, wooden crosses which he sold to help to raise money to equip the new church. My mother bought two, one for us and one for herself. I have them both now and use one regularly when I visit Church View, St Luke’s Nursing Home at Scothern and when taking Holy Communion to sick parishioners.

So here, for me, is a powerful symbol: one that not only represents God’s great gift of his son Jesus, who gave his life for us on a cross, but also of my own childhood and the church where I began to learn about God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, to worship him and to sing his praises.

Parishioners in our group of churches are making great efforts to maintain their churches as symbols of the Christian faith in our communities. Not only does this cost a great deal of money but a great deal of effort to raise that money.

Maintenance is expensive (despite the Government’s u-turn on VAT and other minor concessions) but I’m sure, whatever the strength of their faith, most people would wish to see these village churches maintained in good condition as a symbol not only of the Christian faith, but also of the history and heritage of the communities in which they have been the focal point for many hundreds of years.

So let’s thank God for the dedicated groups who are working hard to maintain our churches for future generations and for those who have donated money towards their work. Let’s support them financially and celebrate their great achievements.

Many people reading this will have seen the previous articles in Nettleham News and be aware that the Community Lottery exists and may even have witnessed a draw at the Carnival, or in one of the other village locations. However, it may not be clear exactly why the Lottery was started and what it is for.

We appreciate that some people do not wish to attend church on a regular basis, if at all, but we do realise that they want it for those important events in family life, whether that be the Baptism of a child, a wedding, or the celebration of a loved one’s life. Also part of a village and its desirability as a place to live revolves around the amenities it provides - pubs, post office, shops, church, etc.

The Community Lottery was started at the beginning of this year by All Saints Church with two very distinct aims: To help maintain a Grade 1 listed building To contribute to projects, events and organisations that benefit the community.

Money raised from the lottery will be spent in three ways: a) Prizes b) The fabric of a Grade 1 listed building. c) Village projects, organisations and events.

It will not be spent on religious things such as the vicars’ expenses, communion wine, or the day-to-day expenses of heating, lighting, postage, etc.

Why have a Community Lottery?

All Saints Church has been in the village for over 1,000 years and whether you attend regularly, use it for ‘hatch, match and dispatch’, check your watch against the tower clock, or just like the look of it as you go past on your way to work or into town, you may imagine that it will be here for another millennium. But unless our village community takes action it will not.

Historically the Lord of the Manor donated very large sums to sustain the church. This of course no longer happens and we are unable to find a multi-millionaire who would be prepared to step in.

The church has just had its five-year inspection which has revealed the urgent work that needs completing in the next five years. This has come to a total of £26,000 for repairs to the tower roof and stonework, largely as a result of the recent severe winters.

The congregation of the church also believes that it has a mission to reach out into the community - to people above all else. We already do this through the Junior School and by helping organisations, both Christian and non-Christian, but we really want to do more for the whole community in Nettleham.

From these two strands the idea of the lottery was born. Currently around 20 Church of England churches close per year and we know that you would not wish that to happen here.

You may want to help support community projects. Through the Community Lottery we have already donated £200 to the Jubilee Street Party and will be donating to the refurbishment of the Village Hall.

This is where you come in. A lottery number will cost you just £27 a quarter which is less than £2 and a penny a week.

What do you get in return?

Maintain the value of your house by maintaining a Grade I listed building in the village.

Helping to provide more possibilities for the community within which you and your families live.

Nettleham Press Cuttings These historic press cuttings relating to the village of Nettleham were discovered amongst the effects of the late Mrs Kathleen Hesketh and kindly supplied by her nephew David Hammond

Daily Telegraph 14 September 1960

Historical press cuttings from both national and local newspapers, magazines and other publications frequently provide material of great interest to the local historian.

We sometimes think that the problems facing the village today are purely symptomatic of modern times, but all too often they have been contentious issues for many years, which have still not been satisfactorily resolved and perhaps never will be.

Discussion, debate and argument continue down the years from generation to generation with no one seemingly able to come up with an answer that meets everyone’s approval.

The source and date of these cuttings, dealing with very local issues, is not always certain, but it is believed that most probably originate with the Lincolnshire Echo or Lincolnshire Chronicle newspapers, although the one to the left comes from the Morning Telegraph and the one above comes from the Daily Telegraph.

Grants Available from All Saints Church for Further Education The funds from the sale of the Old School buildings in Nettleham were placed in trust, with income generated to be used to benefit education provided by Nettleham Church of England Aided Junior School.

The trustees are drawn from Nettleham All Saints Church and are currently the Vicar and the Church Wardens. Most recently financial support has been provided to allow the school to undertake significant building projects, which has included re-roofing and the installation of a ‘solar farm’ of photovoltaic panels.

In the coming year, following discussions with the school, the trustees would like to offer three bursaries of £400 each to young people under the age of 24 who have families resident in the parish of All Saints, Nettleham and who are former pupils of Nettleham Church of England Aided Junior School.

The aim of these bursaries is to support the continuation of education beyond traditional ‘compulsory’ schooling beyond the age of 18.

A New Service for Village Dog Owners To this end, she is embarking on a further education course lasting 2-5 years, culminating in the prestigious Higher Diploma in Dog Grooming - the highest qualification in the profession, which only the elite can achieve and which results in being admitted as a member of the Guild of Master Groomers.

Nettleham News readers who own a dog may be interested to know that a brand new dog-grooming boutique has recently opened for business in the village.

Michelle Major, the proprietor of new Major Groom, recently moved back to the village with her family as her husband grew up in the village and they have always considered it to be a beautiful location in which to raise their family.

Michelle said: “For many years I took my dogs to an excellent local groomer, but unfortunately the lady closed the business for health reasons. Since then, I have tried a number of different groomers in the area, but I was unable to find one that offered the exceptional and consistently high standards which I expect.

“An experienced professional hairdresser for many years, I decided to return to college and obtain a City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Grooming, which would enable me to open my own business offering dog owners not only the very best in grooming, but also knowledgable advice on animal health and welfare.”

Michelle has always been passionate about dogs, growing up in a family where there were always dogs around. NETTLEHAM CRICKET CLUB It is the end of July and at the height of the English summer, with two thirds of the cricket season completed, the main focus of this edition’s report is on the weather.

With the wettest June on record, following a wet April and May, and with no sign of the rain abating at the start of July, it is hardly surprising that the fixtures for all teams have been decimated.

The Mulsanne pitch has been constantly under water and it has only been thanks to the dedication of groundsmen John Dingley and Dave Ranshaw that any play has been possible during this period of almost continuous rain.

The U9 team in their first taste of club cricket managed by Martin Strawson, playing with a soft ball and 8 a side, played 8 matches, won 2 against Lindum & Hartsholme and lost 6.

The U10 team continuing at this level into their second season with the soft ball under manager Phil Brown, played 5 matches, winning 2 against Caythorpe and Sleaford.

The U11 team now playing with a hard cricket ball and 11 a side under manager Craig Cosgrove, played 7 matches, winning 4 against Sleaford, Owmby, Hartsholme and Bracebridge Heath.

The U13 team under manager James Marshall, have played 6 and won 4 matches against Sleaford, Collingham, Cherry Willingham and Marshalls, finishing 2nd in their league.

These conditions have also meant the postponement of the Club’s ‘Summer Ball’ rearranged (when hopefully we shall have an ‘Indian Summer’) for Saturday 29 September. Like all amateur sporting clubs we are very dependent on fund raising.

This year we have organised a Grand Draw with a top prize of £200, so hopefully many of our members will be selling tickets during August and September before the draw at our Annual Ball. Do please support your local cricket club.

With the sun finally making an appearance by the middle of July, a full programme of fixtures was finally possible and the cricket season was able to get into full swing.

Nettleham Cricket Club is holding a summer junior cricket coaching camp at Mulsanne Park from Monday 30 July to Thursday 2 August, and also hosts their regular county kwik cricket tournament on Friday 3 August, also at Mulsanne Park.

The Club’s family-friendly ‘Geoff Clarke’ cricket day is on Sunday 12 August at Mulsanne Park, when players of all ages and teams are welcome along with family and friends, to play a social kwik cricket competition, with refreshments available on the day.

In senior cricket the 1st XI playing in the Lincs Premier League under captain Russ Binnington, at the end of July sit top of the table having played 7 out of their 12 games, winning 6 and losing just 1.

With April’s entire league fixtures washed out due to the weather, their first match was on 7 May away against Messingham.

In cool but damp conditions Messingham made 170-9 off their allotted 50 overs, 69

with 5 wickets for Nettleham’s overseas player Juan Grobbelaar and 3 for Tom Dalton. In reply Nettleham made 174 for 9 in a close tight finish, Dave Manby top scoring with 68, to give Nettleham their first win in the last over of the game.

Their good run of form continued in May with wins against Scunthorpe by 27 runs with half centuries for Jack Curtis, Dave Manby and Tom Dalton, and 5 wickets for Jack Bayliss and four for James Pickering.

Also against Alkborough who only made 92 thanks to 4 wickets for Jack Bayliss and 3 for James Stevens. Nettleham made hard work of the chase, but scrambled to 93 for 8 thanks to 40 from Jack Curtis.

Their only loss of the season to date came against the then league leaders Barton, who were bowled out for 164 in only 34 overs thanks to 6 wickets from Juan Grobbelaar. Nettleham struggled in their reply with only 2 batsmen reaching double figures, opener Phil Brown 29 and James Stevens 36 as they were bowled out for 127 in 33 over’s, the damp pitch not helping either side. The rest of June was a washout, but July saw the return of the sun and the continued good run of form as they won at Broughton. Batting first, Nettleham made 186 for 9, with contributions from Dave Manby 55 and Russ Binnington 37. In reply Broughton could only muster 107 all out with 4 wickets for Juan Grobbelaar and James Pickering, and 2 for Tom Dalton completed an excellent team performance.

On another wet pitch not conducive to batting at Alford, they struggled to 77 all out, with Juan Grobbelaar taking 8 for 33 in 11 overs. In reply Nettleham made 81 for 8 to scrape a victory.

Their final match in July was against South Kelsey, and the adverse weather overnight delayed the start until 3.00pm as players tried to get the pitch and outfield fit for play. Reduced to a 36 overs a side match, Nettleham made 199 for 8 with contributions from Dave Lea 36, Russ Binnington 42 and Jack Curtis 42. South Kelsey were bowled out for 61 in just 15 overs as Juan Grobbelaar ripped through the heart of their batting taking 7 wickets.

This excellent spell of fast bowling takes him to the top of the league bowling averages taking 55 wickets at an average of 9.16 runs per wicket.

Report Back from your Local Councillor Ray Sellars Sadly Ray Sellars died on the 5 July 2012 after a short illness and a lifetime of public service. He was first elected to West Lindsey District Council in 1973, a year before the authority took over from the Welton Rural District Council, and helped create the new body. He was currently serving the Nettleham Ward for the third time on the District Council.

Ray has been the County Councillor for Nettleham & Saxilby since 2001.

Nettleham will miss a truly great Councillor who always did his best for our village and I will miss a true friend and colleague.

In his last weeks of life he was discussing with me the proposed police station and other village concerns and he felt it important for me to take him the necessary forms to sign, so that his allocation from the Councillor’s Fund could be spent in the village.

Proposed new Police Station on Deepdale Lane Cllr Malcolm Leaning is a member of West Lindsey’s Planning Committee and, as such, will consider and vote on any planning application made by the Police Authority for a new police station in Nettleham. He must not be seen to prejudge any application by making a favourable or unfavourable comment on any possible planning application before hearing all sides of the argument up to and at the planning meeting - if he does comment, he loses the right to vote on that application. He did attend the public meeting in Nettleham and listened to all the views expressed.

Grants and Councillors’ Fund Neither Councillor Sellars, nor myself, received any request for funds from local organisations after mentioning the cash available in the spring edition of Nettleham News. As the money had to be spent before the end of the year I have now allocated my fund towards: The hire of a portable Skate Board Park for one day - through Nettleham PC: £370 (Ray allocated £370 for another day) Safety matting for use under children’s play equipment - through Nettleham PC: £1,030 (Ray allocated £1,500) Refurbishing Nettleham village hall kitchen - through Nettleham V/H committee: £2,600 (Ray allocated £1,500 to the new lighting in the V/H lounge)

This is the total money available from this fund up to April 2013 and, after that date, any further requests for financial help can be considered.

The CAV Fund though is available now and can be used for activities that bring the community together - for example forming a residents’ group, helping a gardening club, or carrying out modest improvements to community assets, including painting community rooms and projects involving volunteers that promote community action.

West Lindsey covers 450 square miles with a wide mix of rural and urban areas.

To ensure the CAV Fund is evenly distributed, the council has split the district into six areas, which will all have an allocation of £40,000 each. Local district councillors in each area will sit on a panel to decide, along with community members, to agree on the applications.

The maximum grant available is £250 for each project. Applications will be assessed on a monthly basis by local area panels.

Panel decisions will be made during the last working week of each month and you will be notified of the outcome within 10 days.

Examples of grants already given include paying for an annual village garden show (Nettleham Gardeners Association already have an application form), bench repairs at Waddingham: £250, Willoughton Sunshine Club ‘Days Out Fund’: £250, Cherry Willingham PCC to update and refurbish the Church Hall: £250, Faldingworth Methodist Church for Chapel gutter repairs: £250 and Nettleham Cricket Club for improvements to the playing surface: £240.

West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) is looking to identify those areas of our district where broadband reception and transmission, even if available, is very slow.

Now we have extended the enquiry to include mobile ‘phone reception where, I believe, Nettleham does have areas of poor and non-existent service for some providers (eg Vodaphone, Orange, O2, etc) Please let me know of those areas of our village where you cannot get a good signal and which mobile service you are trying to use.

Green Bins in Winter Following the critical comments received (2 from Nettleham) and WLDC members’ comments about last year’s green bin collection finishing at the end of October the green bins will, this year, continue to be collected until the 3 December 2012.

Then, after no collections during the winter, WLDC will restart collecting them on the 25 March 2013.

A scheme for a special collection of a green bin on request and with a fee to cover the cost during the winter, is being discussed.

Last year WLDC offered home compost bins for sale at a competitive price. They sold 436 out of a total of 943 throughout all of Lincolnshire.

Best Place to Live!

In a recent report to the Challenge and Improvement Committee under the heading: ‘A Healthy District’, figures showed that in May 2012 Nettleham was the ‘least deprived’ ward in West Lindsey!

Flooding Recent heavy rain in Nettleham reminds us of the flooding in June 2007.

Work has been done since then on clearing the Beck downstream of our village and if the riparian owners on either bank continue to keep the stream clear, it is hoped that Nettleham village will avoid serious flooding for many years to come.

Along with Manchester and Brighton & Hove, West Lindsey District Council is leading the way on supporting communities tackle anti-social behavior (ASB). The newly-developed Community Trigger pilot will last for six months and is a partnership with Lincolnshire police.

The ‘trigger’ invites members of the public to contact us if they have reported ASB three times in the previous 12-month period and feel they have not received a satisfactory service.

The ‘trigger’ is one of the government’s new proposed ASB powers and is aimed at empowering communities and individuals to challenge the agencies dealing with anti-social behavior.

The soon-to-be-elected Police and Crime Commissioners will oversee the ‘trigger’ process when it becomes mandatory under the new law.

The main hall has the best reception for this service.

My interest in Lincoln Drill Hall began whilst researching Joseph Ruston for a history course.

Ruston provided the building, at a cost of over £10,000, for the Lincolnshire Volunteer Regiment in 1890. At the time I was carrying out this research (1997) the building was sadly neglected. I was delighted when it was refurbished and it metamorphosed into its current manifestation as a centre for the arts and entertainment.

I am also passionate about the re-use of redundant buildings, believing that historical buildings should have a purpose in order to be sustainable.

The Drill Hall is a flexible space, all seating in the large main auditorium is removable. Events also occur in the more intimate space of the ‘Room Upstairs’.

In general my interests are in folk music and plays. We are lucky in Lincoln to have several excellent amateur dramatics companies. So look out for Indulgence Theatre, Common Ground and the newer Out of the Box. In the last year I have seen one or other of these perform “Hobson’s Choice”, “The Graduate”, “Gigi”, “Closer” and “A Sonnet for Anne”.

This latter play is part of the current countrywide Shakespeare Festival and had its premier in Lincoln.

In addition I saw a play called “Me, myself and Miss Gibbs”, a one-woman performance with a fascinating mixture of mystery, historical research and mundane everyday life. This came as a result of the visit of the Hall’s director, Simon Hollingworth, to the Edinburgh Fringe.

My love of folk music has been amply satisfied in the last year by seeing Steve Knightly, Karine Polwart, the Unthanks, the Hooleys and Pennyless.

All of these were delightful in different ways. I also went to a performance by Ensemblebash, which was an eclectic mix of modern composition and traditional African music, played on an amazing range of instruments and everyday objects.

Another favourite at the Drill Hall is the literary lecture by Dr Jane Mackay held during the day on the last Friday of every month, often followed by a film of the book discussed. In recent months these have covered the books/plays: Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House”, Rattigan’s “The Deep Blue Sea”, J D Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” and Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities”.

These are just my interests, there are many lunchtime concerts - some free, some charged, music for all tastes and all ages, comedy nights, dance, discos (of many eras and for many ages) and the Bangers and Mash Ball, as well as the Lincoln Book Festival and the Lincoln Beer Festival.

This autumn there is a very full programme. Drama is represented by “Calendar Girls”, “The Full Monty” and some experimental dance drama (see Flux Theatre). The children (all ages 2-90+) are catered for by the Pantomime and visits from Garlic, Freehand and Birds’ Nest Theatre.

Classical music includes performances

by The Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Viva, Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra and Choir, Last Night of the Proms and the Chamber Music Festival. For jazz there is a visit by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and if you like Big Band, then the RAF Band is for you. If, like me, you like folk music then consider Jackie Oakes, Rita Payne, The Shee and Show of Hands.

In addition this season there are special evenings with Shirley Williams (politician), Gervase Phinn (ex school inspector with attitude) and Mark Beaumont (adventure junkie). For nostalgia/vintage comedy, there is one evening with a Joyce Grenfell tribute act and another with some lost Tony Hancock playlets.

Comedy is covered by the Red Herring Comedy nights, Lincoln Comedy Festival (October) and John Shuttleworth. There is something for most tastes, so give this local arts centre your support.

home when batting first Nettleham made 259 for7, with half-centuries for Simon Grocott and Jack Curtis. Keelby could only reply with 206 for 6 off their allotted 45 overs.

Nettleham took this good form into the Lincolnshire County Cup, with teams from all divisions in the Lincolnshire league playing for the George Marshall Trophy with matches played over 45 overs a side, each team using a minimum of 5 bowlers who can bowl a maximum of 9 overs each.

Nettleham 2nd XI competed in the Bob Welton Cup for all Lincolnshire League second teams, with similar rules to the 1st XI Cup, 45 overs a side with a minimum of 5 bowlers bowling a maximum of 9 over’s.

Drawn against another premier division team in Cleethorpes in the opening round, Nettleham won the toss and elected to bat making 231 for 8, runs for Jack Curtis 71, Phil Brown 29 and a cameo at the end of 37 from James Pickering. Despite a century from Inderjit Hayre, when he was out at 188-4, they lost their last 6 wickets for 39 runs to finish on 227 all out, with Juan Grobbelaar taking 6 wickets for 30 runs, enabling Nettleham to win a compelling match by just 4 runs.

Having drawn a bye in the first round, in the quarter-finals they were drawn against Broughton away, who batted first and were bowled out for 129 in the 35th over.

Pick of the bowlers were Danny Lea and Ben Pearce with 3 wickets apiece.

In reply Nettleham made light of the posted total, reaching their target of 130 for the loss of only 1 wicket, with contributions of 66no from Simon Grocott and 36no from Danny McCardle

The second round saw them drawn against another premier league side away at Messingham who batted first and made 132 for 9 with the wickets shared amongst the Nettleham bowlers. In reply opener Phil Brown top scored with 37 as Nettleham reached their target in the 36th over with 8 wickets down.

The quarter-final match again saw them drawn away against premier league team Alkborough. Put in to bat, Alkborough made 215 for 4, with Craig Ross making an unbeaten 125. This was a good target to get and Nettleham chased well with openers Phil Brown (29) and Russ Binnington (73) and Dave Manby batting at number 3 and scoring 58 giving Nettleham a solid start. Nettleham reached their target of 218 for the loss of 7 wickets and progressed into the semi-finals.

Here they met yet another premier league side Barton who batted first and made 218 for 8, having been 136 for 7 at one stage.

Unfortunately missing several players, and with several others suffering from celebrating the wedding of Dave Manby to Michelle Hall the previous day, Nettleham could only muster 130 for 9, thus ending their run in the cup at the semi-final stage.

The 2nd XI playing in the Lincolnshire County 2nd Division lie 4th in the league, but have been severely affected by the weather, playing only 4 out of 12 matches and tying 2.

Their first game was not until 19 May, where playing away at Caistor they bowled

them out for 91 with 8 wickets for James Pickering. In reply Nettleham made 92 for 4, captain Ben Pearce top scoring with 34no.

Their next match was not until June against Messingham where they made 141 for 9, Dave Hutchinson top scoring with 46. This exciting match was tied when Nettleham bowled them all out for 141 in the 43rd over, Simon Grocott taking 5 wickets. The following week saw their second win away at Washingborough, where they bowled them out for 105, 4 wickets apiece for Danny Lea and Simon Grocott. In reply Nettleham reached their target of 107 for 7 in the 42nd over.

The rest of June and the start of July was a washout and their next match was away at Owmby. Having reduced Owmby to 146 for 7, pick of the bowlers Martin Strawson with 3 wickets, Nettleham were reduced to 66 for 6 when the rain came and the match was tied. In the last week of July another victory came against Keelby at 72

The semi-final saw them drawn away at Outcasts, and put into bat first on a damp wicket they struggled to 136 for 7, mainly thanks to 31 from opener and captain Ben Pearce, and an 8th wicket partnership of 70 from Martin Strawson (32no) and Dave Lea (36no). In reply Outcasts reached their target of 138 for the loss of 8 wickets, pick of the Nettleham bowlers was Alex Willerton with 3 wickets.

In the Sunday Lincoln League the 1st XI, playing in the premier league, have played 6 out of their 9 allotted fixtures, losing them all. This is a high level of cricket for the young Nettleham players, often against teams with 5 or 6 ECB players in, and they have done well to compete in most matches.

The Sunday 2nd XI playing in the 3rd Division have played 8 out of their scheduled 11 matches, winning 2. This is the team through which juniors are fed into senior cricket, and play in a social less competitive atmosphere, allowing players to develop into the more senior teams.
