Crime in Nettleham We are fortunate that the crime rate in the village continues at a very low level.

However, it is reported that the city of Lincoln has seen a huge increase in the number of stolen bicycles recently and this trend could all too easily spread here.

So do make sure that your bicycle is security marked and whenever you leave it, ensure that you use a good quality bicycle lock so that it is still there when you return! (see also Police News on page 27) Unfortunately email scams, which originate abroad, continue to be reported. There is a very simple rule to be followed here: no reputable organisation (eg banks, building societies, charities, etc) will ever ask for your bank account details via email.

If a request for this information appears in an email which you receive, delete it immediately (or alternatively forward it to the relevant authority for investigation).

Scammers are known to frequently use well-known brand logos to give their emails a very realistic and authentic appearance, but under no circumstances should you ever divulge your bank account details to anyone via email, no matter how credible the request appears to be.

Nettleham Nature Notes On page 53 appears the first of a series of articles by Phyllis Maiden (also our book reviewer) on different aspects of wildlife in and around the village through the seasons of the year.

I know many readers enjoy hearing about the experiences of others in observing the wildlife which both resides in, and visits, Nettleham, so this should be of interest to all our ‘nature lovers’ out there.

Nettleham Summer Events By the time this edition of the magazine is delivered to your door, the Nettleham Diamond Jubilee Street Party on Monday 4 June will probably have already taken place on The Green.

I do hope the weather for this and also the Nettleham Carnival on 14 July is better than the weather we have experienced in what has turned out to be the wettest April on record!

I hope to be there at both events with my camera and reports should be included in the autumn edition of Nettleham News.

Gardeners too have been dismayed at the recent cold and wet conditions which have prevailed throughout April. This is one of the busiest months in the gardening year and I do hope it doesn’t result in fewer entries in the popular annual Nettleham Gardeners’ Association Show in the village hall on Saturday 1 September.

If you have never entered anything in this show, why not have a go this year - you never know, you could be walking away with one of the magnificent trophies which are presented in a wide range of different classes.

You don’t have to be a member of the Gardeners’ Association to enter and there are all sorts of different classes in which you can enter (see pages 49-51 for further information).

Nettleham Handbook and Directory It is anticipated that an updated version of this useful pull-out supplement will again be included in the centre of the autumn edition of Nettleham News magazine.

It provides comprehensive details about all kinds of clubs, societies, special interest groups and other organisations in and around the village, together with useful information about local amenities and facilities.

Is your special interest group represented within its pages? Is the information relating to your group, which appeared in the autumn 2011 edition, still correct?

A number of people have contected me over the course of the past year, the changes noted and the entries will be duly updated in the next edition.

The Bishops’Palace Site New developments at this important historical site in our village continue to make progress (see pages 27 and 36/37) and anyone who feels they would like to become involved in any way in this most interesting project would be most welcome.

Parish Council News The damp month of April has now moved into what we hope are sunnier days of summer when the village takes on its annual green and flowery appearance.

Before starting on specific topics, it’s worth mentioning what many residents will already know, that this year looks like being a significant one for the village in a number of ways, with several major proposals being floated which are likely to affect the area.

The Parish Council is, of course, at the forefront of this, generally being a consultee and often the catalyst in pulling local views together. Wherever possible we endeavour to strike a balance between residents’ views (which sometimes conflict) and District Council and Government policies, particularly on planning and the longer term development of the village and its environs. What Councillors recognise, and what is in fact inevitable, is that nothing stays the same forever and development of one sort or another is inevitable everywhere, and that the result is unlikely to please everyone.

Parish Council staff have as a result, been under increased pressure since the start of the year and it is inevitable that on occasions responses to emails and letters may take a little longer than usual. In respect of significant matters which need to be aired or publicised between meetings the Council’s website is usually the place to look, although we do use the Council noticeboards too for some matters.

This report concentrates mainly on the current major areas of interest and details the situation at the beginning of May. On some topics things will have moved on prior to the publication of this edition of our village magazine. For the reasons outlined above this report is unavoidably shorter than usual.

Police Headquarters Proposals Nettleham Parish Council was first notified of this proposal by the Lincolnshire Police Authority at the beginning of March 2012 and it was discussed at the Council meeting held on the 20 March. It was clear that a great deal more information and facts were required from the Police Authority, the police and G4S before we could comment on the proposals, and that the local community would need to be consulted beforehand.

By the time this edition is published, residents will have had the opportunity to view the proposals at an exhibition in the village, and to discuss and comment on the proposals at an Extraordinary Parish Council meeting. Only after that meeting (24 May) will the Parish Council comment

Council, and therefore any firm decision on this is some months away, and will be open to public representation via Lincolnshire County Council.

The Council decision will be reported in the Minutes (available on the Council website and a hard copy in the library) and an update will be included in the next Nettleham News.

On All Saints Lane there have been frequent complaints about parking at the start and end of the school day. Despite regular attendance by the police, considerable inconvenience is being caused to residents by indiscriminate parking, at times on private property.

The Parish Council has undertaken consultation with the police, Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, the Highways Dept at Lincolnshire County Council and the Infant School regarding this situation, to try to determine a way forward.

further; and it may be that further discussions and further public consultation will be necessary once the Police Authority, the police and G4S submit a planning application. The Parish Council will publicise any further discussions via the village noticeboards and the Council website.

Parking on the Village Green and All Saints Lane The parking situation on the village green has been a long-standing problem and one which does not have a solution which will satisfy everyone. A couple of years ago the Parish Council successfully lobbied for short stretches of double yellow lines to alleviate problems near the bus stop.

However regular complaints continue to be received from pedestrians and motorists about the difficulties caused around The Green with vehicles of all sizes blocking footways, precluding parking outside the Co-op and generally obstructing traffic.

A number of Councillors met with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and a representative from the Highways Dept at Lincolnshire County Council, as a result of which recommendations have been made and consultation is underway with the residents/commercial premises in the area.

Any decision made by the Parish Council can only be a recommendation to the Highways Dept at Lincolnshire County 5

The Skate Park Working Group met in April and examined possible locations, which have previously featured in Council reports.

Finance remains a key factor in any decision on the ultimate feasibility of the project and the Working Group is talking to various potential grant organisations.

Willow Trees at Watermill Lane This item is included as a brief update of the facts surrounding what was a contentious topic in March and April. Two willow trees were planted about 40 years ago adjacent to the Beck on Watermill Lane. Over the past 6 years the larger tree has been shedding an increasing amount of debris of varying sizes. The Parish Council has used their tree surgeon on several occasions to remove dead material and split branches from this tree.

The Council’s Honorary Tree Advisor (Cllr J Hill), accompanied by the PC’s tree surgeon, inspected the trees earlier this year and found that the larger tree was suffering from a form of terminal die-back of the higher branches. A second opinion was sought from the County Council’s principal tree surgeon, a man very experienced in the management of trees in our county. He confirmed the die-back that we had noticed and said that although he had seen it before, an explanation was difficult.

We then consulted WLDC’s officer with responsibility for the ‘Green Environment’.

She considers each individual case and when appropriate makes Tree Preservation Orders using a nationally accepted scheme to rate any application. The rating for these continued on page 7

trees, after a personal inspection, was 8 for the smaller willow and 10.5 for the larger one. A score of 15 is required to justify a Tree Preservation Order.

An additional factor brought to the PC’s attention was the continued difficulty with drains and drainage in this area and the close proximity of individual drains to these trees. The main sewer is only 6m away and the principal drain from the Kingsway development is 8m away. Tree roots, especially from willows, can be expected to extend underground for a distance of at least the height of the tree.

As a result of these consultations, Cllr Hill advised the Property Committee at their meeting on 1 February of all the possible actions that could be taken and their potential success, both short-term and long-term, together with the fiscal implications. They decided that the best long-term management solution was to fell the trees and replace them with more suitable specimen(s). Accordingly our tree surgeon was instructed to remove them.

Immediately before the planned action day we advertised the felling locally and as a result many individuals raised objections

and they subsequently attended the Property Meeting on 12 March. After this PC Property Committee, Cllr Hill consulted the County Council’s Aboricultural Officer, who was in agreement with the action proposed by the Parish Council. He was strongly opposed to pollarding of willows in this environment and thought that an alder would be a better long-term solution.

He did, however, think that these trees and the associated verge might be part of the Highway and therefore LCC’s responsibility and this turned out to be the case. This was reported at the Parish council meeting on 26 April, when it was agreed that the Parish Council would make representations to LCC Highways expressing the view that in the opinion on the Parish Council the trees should be pollarded per the advice of the Nettleham Woodland Trust’s Advisor and that Anglian Water be requested to investigate the correlation (if any) between the tree roots and their sewer.

Neighbourhood Plan The first meeting of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee has been held.

A draft Terms of Reference and Action Plan has been produced. Currently the

Committee were seeking a meeting with Mark Sturgess, Head of the Planning Department at West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) regarding how WLDC will be able to assist the Steering Committee in producing a Neighbourhood Plan.

Best Kept Village Competition The Parish Council has entered the village in this competition again this year. There are some slight changes to the judging process, principally that judges will visit the village in July, August and September (one month later than previously).

Hopefully the hosepipe ban will not preclude the usual wonderful displays around the village and we can once more get back into a prize-winning position.

Village Walks At a recent meeting of the Fieldpaths Advisory Committee it was agreed that two village walks would be organised.

The first on Saturday 30 June 2012 starting at 7.00pm commencing at Monks Wood, Dunholme and walking back to Nettleham via Scothern and the second on Sunday 7 October 2012 at 11.00am commencing on The Green.

Letters from Readers From Margaret in Watford I spent so much time, writing paper and soul-searching in trying to respond to “Becoming Older” (page 43 Nettleham News spring 2012 edition) that I have decided not to bother, because I suddenly realised that the writer could be male or female and indeed only 60 years of age!

As I, on the other hand, am old, I was looking at this article in a different light and felt the writer was living in an ‘idealistc bubble’!

For me, getting older means painful arthritis, misshapen hands and trying to open jars, do buttons up, etc, has become a nightmare.

I miss wearing high heels and trendy clothes and have vowed never to get grey hair! Most of all old age has meant I am now on my own - no friendly warm hugs when I’m sad, no ‘cuppa’ made especially for me, and coming home to an empty house makes me weep.

On a different subject - I read the article on ‘Dial-a-Ride’ (page 29 Nettleham News spring 2012 edition) and as a senior citizen here in Watford, I would simply hate to be without this service.

Being on my own since 2008, I have relied on this service and found it unbeatable.

I am picked up, taken to my destination and brought home at an arranged time.

The drivers are kind, courteous and, as I live in an upstairs maisonette, they bring my shopping up 14 stairs (it would take me all day now to do that!).

I would be shattered if this wonderful service, at a reasonable price, were to be discontinued.

Many thanks for your belated birthday wishes and thank you for publishing my letters - it does boost my morale.

Speed Kills!

I refer to the letter in the 2011 summer edition of Nettleham News about speeding in Nettleham.

We live on Washdyke Lane and have just had the fourth cat in five years killed outside our house. I would guess that most people speed in the morning and evening, in fact, most vehicles speed - and well in excess of 30mph.

After the last cat was killed a month ago I went to the Nettleham police station and asked about a radar trap from time to time, and the response was that it could be done if a radar gun was available, and if a charger was available to keep it charged.

The letter writer above suggested traffic calming. This is probably extremely expensive, and my suggestion to the police station was to drill about one hundred pot holes between The White Hart and the A46.

The police response was this would be dangerous. I said OK, fill the potholes with flowers so they were plainly visible. I was not making an impression!

Cats may not be everyone’s favourite pet, but we have had cats since we came to the village in 1965, and besides being free spirits they are affectionate and easy to keep. We cannot have another, as it will, given Washdyke Lane’s track record, last about twelve months, and something will again be taken from our lives.

I would like the police to give serious thought to speeding on Washdyke Lane. They used to, and my son and I have vivid memories of a motorist coming over the top of Washdyke Lane, by the pit, spotting the high-viz jackets and trying to brake and put his seat belt on at the same time. Priceless.

School kids gathering in the morning to catch the bus, and in the afternoon when they return to the village, can be in danger of speeding traffic. The letter writer above alludes to a serious accident waiting to happen. I hope he’s not right.

Via email 16 March 2012 I’m writing on behalf of my mum, Jean Clarke, who will be remembered by many older readers of Nettleham News.

Mum looked at the photograph sent in by Doreen Lane (spring 2012 edition of Nettleham News), and immediately set about finding her copy. Clearly written on the back is “Coronation 1953”, so obviously part of the village celebrations was to have a “Men v Women” football match. How appropriate to publish it in this Diamond Jubilee year!

She was able to name some of the participants as follows: Standing from the left: Bill Needham, Harvey Oakley, Geoff Clarke, - , - , Tom Lane, - , Fred Trott, - , John Bows (I think), Maurice Smith.

The venue is Bill Bailey’s Playing Field, which became Nettleham football pitch for home matches on Saturdays. No changing rooms or toilets in those days, of course!

Regarding the history of the White Hart I undertook quite a lot of research on the White Hart when we were living there.

Yes, it was the village Court House and occasional gaol - then for the Bishop’s Court (most of the village in the late 18th century was still under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Lincoln). It was built around 1790. I can still remember the old pub layout from my grandad’s day (known to everyone as Pop), with the beer barrels down the steps in the cellar, which had a ‘gate’ across (I believe this was where the occasional prisoners were kept originally).

If the new owners would like to get in touch with me direct (email address below) I would be more than happy to pass on what I know of the early history, and of the history during the tenancy of my grandparents and parents, which spanned over 40 years from the 1930s through to the 1970s.

Letters from Readers An Alternative View Dear Nettleham News May I congratulate you on another excellent edition for spring 2012. One piece, however, intrigued me as I was sure I had encountered the article before, so I was surprised it was neither attributed to its original source, nor was there an indication of who had submitted the piece to Nettleham News.

The piece in question was entitled “Food for Thought” on page 27. Whilst I would not describe myself as a Socialist, it seems fair to point out that the parable regarding the economics professor is regularly quoted in right-of-centre American websites as part of their anti-Obama propaganda. In a world where deregulation of banking and utilities industries could be argued to have been causal factors in the economic problems we face, it may be worthwhile publishing a counter-piece. I’m sure the piece published in Nettleham News was not intended as political dogma, and I am in no way lumping the contributor with the self-interested neo-cons who dominate the American right, however I would anticipate that the open-minded readers of Nettleham News would appreciate an alternative parable. A good example would be that penned by Ken Watts on The Daily Mull (see below).

The teacher was saddened at their closed-mindedness and narrowness of thought.

She considered long and hard how to get them to connect their thinking to the real world, which she knew was much more complex than their political theories.

Finally, she came up with a plan.

She walked into class one day, faced the students, and asked a question.

“Do you see any similarities between our country as a whole and this classroom?”

Jonathan Cooper Once upon a time there was an economics professor. She loved teaching almost as much as she loved her subject. Like most born teachers, she was much more interested in what her students learned than she was in establishing her authority in the classroom, or assigning grades. She knew that those things are necessary to the task of teaching, and to the system she taught in, but regarded them as tools to be used to increase learning.

One year she found herself teaching a class full of dyed-in-the-wool conservatives. They seemed unable to think beyond their ideology, and countered any evidence she presented with economic dogma, which they didn’t even seem to have thought through.

“Free markets can be trusted to solve all problems,” they said, “economic or otherwise.”

“Government regulation will predictably lead to economic collapse,” they said.

“Any attempt to introduce enforced ‘fairness’ into a system,” they said, “will only undermine the market forces which make the system work.”

“Yes. I know.”

“Aren’t you going to do anything about it?”

“What would you want me to do?”

“Disqualify their papers. Give them F’s. Give us the A’s.”

“But your papers aren’t as good as theirs. You’re asking for government regulation. We agreed to let market forces work this out.”

The students were silent at first, then one raised a timid hand. “Well, the country has citizens, and the classroom has students.”

The next grade was on a test. By now the class had begun to figure out how the new system was working, so it was no surprise that only the very best students took their own test.

“Very good,” the teacher replied. “So if you represent the citizens, who symbolizes the government?”

The richest students spent their inherited money to hire other professors from the economics department to sit in for them.

Another hand went up.

Some of these students were deeply disappointed, since it was mostly the more conservative professors who would agree that the deregulated approach was legitimate, and of course they had the same ideological blinkers on that the students did, so they didn’t do so well on a fact-based test.

“You do.”

“Exactly. And what would be the equivalent of currency?”

“Grades?”

“Very good. Would you be willing to undertake a little experiment, in order to test whether government regulation is a good thing or a bad thing, right here in this classroom?”

The students, being a bit cocky, readily agreed.

“But they cheated!”

“Here’s what I propose,” the professor said.

“I will grade the scheduled exams and papers just as I always have, and assign the grades as usual. However, from this moment forward, I will cease to regulate how you go about writing those papers or taking the tests.”

The students, blinded by their ideology, saw no problem with this.

The first paper was due the next week. Several of the top students turned in their usual excellent work, and were very surprised to get C’s when the grades were returned.

They might never have figured out what happened, except that one or two of the students who received A’s couldn’t resist bragging.

Those students, the others who had received A’s, and most of the ones who had received B’s, had simply gone to the library and found an article by a professional economist which fitted the assignment. They had then copied it, changed the name to their own, and turned it in.

The students who had worked very hard on their papers only to get C’s immediately went to the teacher and complained.

Some students who were less well off hired other students in the department, with mixed results Some of the better students in the class dropped out, in order to take exams for wealthier students.

But that was only one exam.

By the end of the course, the market had gotten a lot smarter. Fewer mistakes were made, and consequently students pretty much got the grades they had legitimately paid for.

The richest students formed a corporation and pooled their resources to hire a burglar, who stole the answers from the teacher’s office.

They got all the A’s.

The poorest students couldn’t compete, so they dropped out, taking F’s.

With a few exceptions, the students in between had grades which generally reflected how wealthy their parents were.

On the last day of class, the teacher asked the students what they thought of the experiment.

Oddly enough, the wealthiest students thought it had gone fine.

The students in the middle ranges, however, weren’t so sure. In general, the more competent they were, the less they thought of the system.

And, of course, the poorest students weren’t there anymore, and so had no voice.

Thank you Jonathan for offering an alternative view to that expressed in the ‘Food for Thought’ piece on page 27 of the spring 2012 edition and in the interests of balance it is published here for consideration by readers.

You are quite correct in assuming that the original piece came from the internet and was one of many I receive from a number of different sources who regularly send items which they think may be suitable for inclusion in the magazine. It is necessary to be very selective and use only those which may perhaps be of interest to readers of Nettleham News. Internet-sourced items frequently have no attribution to a specific author.

Prior to filling, the sticky clay made walking on the lake bed difficult !

The fourteen-foot hole confirms that the depth of natural clay on the site is substantial

Landscaping of the lake banks and walkways at the new Co-operative Wood at Ashing Lane Nature Reserve is now complete and the photographs here show the heavy clay soil in this part of the site, the main reason for choosing this location for a lake and wetland environment.

The above photograph shows a fourteen foot exploratory hole which was dug to determine the depth of clay, which extends all the way down. There was still no sign of water even at that depth, confirmation that ground water levels were at an unusually low point due to the drier than usual winter this year.

Excavating the lake bed and contouring the lakeside banks

By repeatedly tracking the JCB over the area, the clay is compacted and once this has been completed the saved top soil will be redistributed over the area ready to be seeded in early summer, together with some additional tree planting. This area will allow an interesting walking route around the wood side of the lake to be created, together with adequate space for a possible future wildlife-watching hide.

Further compaction (puddling) of the clay was carried out on the lake bed and sides in order to maximise the water retention properties of the natural clay.

The water to fill the lake comes from the nearby large drainage ditch which runs through Monks Wood, collecting water from the woodland area, and the fields beyond, through a series of underground land-drain systems.

The lake, being the lowest point in the local landscape fills naturally by gravity and the significant levels of rainfall in April enabled the filling process to be completed more quickly than anticipated.

It is hoped that this new feature will attract a wide range of different wildlife to the area in the future.

Mabel Briggs Memorial Luncheon Club 30th Anniversary On Thursday, 8 March 2012, the Mabel Briggs Memorial Luncheon Club celebrated its 30th Anniversary and the diners arrived in their best ‘bib and tucker’ to enjoy a gourmet meal with wine and champagne!

This was a wonderful achievement and our thanks must go to all the past and present helpers - who are all volunteers, from cooks to the washers up - and to the Briggs family for their generous bequest and, of course, to the late dear Muriel Newman - how she would have loved to celebrate with us. Without her tenacity and sense of purpose, the Luncheon Club would not have existed. So here’s to many more years and hopefully a 40th, or even 50th, birthday!

Later this year the Tuesday Coffee Morning will also celebrate - this time 37 years since they first opened the door to the elderly in Nettleham and surrounding villages to serve tea, coffee and biscuits and a chance to sit and natter over a cuppa.

To cap it all, it is now 40 years since Age Concern - as it was known in 1972 started to operate in Nettleham. Helpers took cakes, biscuits, chocolates and books to the residents in Linelands and Church View to bring some cheer into their lives as some were very lonely and longed for someone to chat with. Later, the Coffee Morning and Luncheon Club were added to the activities. Now 40 years later, some things have changed. Age Concern has changed its name to Age UK and sadly so many of the people who helped to shape and steer all the activities are no longer with us, but the present committee hope to be able to continue to care and serve the elderly in Nettleham for many years to come.

Maintenance Work in Vicars’ Wood On Tuesday 21 February 2012, amidst a carpet of newly-emerged snowdrops and winter aconites, a working party of local residents, under the watchful eye of Bill Ball, undertook some early maintenance work in Vicars’ Wood.

Small areas of overgrown scrub were cleared and holes dug in readiness for planting a number of additional trees and shrubs, including wild crab-apple and wild privet, at a later date.

Ivy, much evident in the wood, was also thinned and a mulch of wood chippings from previous work in the wood, was applied around the base of new tree saplings, to act both as a weed suppressant and to conserve precious moisture.

The media was already reporting the relatively dry winters we have experienced in recent years and of course this has since been confirmed recently by the imposition of a hosepipe ban over the eastern and southern counties of the country.

The lack of rainfall in recent months was confirmed by the dry condition of the soil in the wood so early in the year and unless we receive a significant amount of rain in the coming months, plants may suffer.

Chairman’s Annual Report 1 April 2011 - 31 March 2012 As Chairman of Nettleham Parish Council, I submit to the Parish Meeting for consideration my Annual Report for the period 1 April 2011 - 31 March 2012, being another extremely busy one for the Parish Council (yes, yet another one!).

I set out below a summary of the Council’s main areas of activity during that period.

A number of meetings of the Skate Park Steering Group have taken place and the Group is currently looking at the most suitable location and potential costings.

A site meeting is planned at Mulsanne Park at the end of April 2012.

1 Bishops Palace Site A 14-year lease was signed in February 2012 between the Church Commissioners and the Parish Council. A small group of local enthusiasts and organisations has been established by the Parish Council to produce a plan, which it is intended to enable the site to be opened up for public access. Initially there is some tidying up of the site required.

The Parish Council has been successful in its bid for grant funding from the Heritage Lottery and has been awarded £23,700 to complete the first phase of the project, which is to be spent over the next 2-3 years. The aim is to create a heritage focused amenity incorporating a discovery trail and interpretation points explaining the site’s history and interesting features.

We also plan to have other strong educational and environmental themes within the site; the Junior School and Nettleham Woodland Trust, as well as Nettleham Heritage Association, will have representation on the project steering group.

Future developments and actions for the site will be reported in the Parish Council’s quarterly article in Nettleham News.

2 Village Hall Re-Roofing Contract The Parish Council secured a loan from the Public Works Loans Board to partially fund the replacement of the Village Hall roofs.

The remaining funding came from the Village Hall Committee and Parish Council Reserves. Following a tendering process, the contractor, Johnson & Smith (Lincoln) Ltd of Branston Booths, was awarded the contract for the project. Originally work was due to commence in August 2011; however, due to some required technical alterations the contract commenced in September 2011 and concluded at the end of November 2011. Subsequent reports received from the users of the Village Hall have been very favourable and the general appearance of the Hall has been vastly improved.

A mobile skate park event was held in August 2011, sited on the Mulsanne Park car park, which was successful and well supported. This will be repeated in June and August this year.

4 Neighbourhood Plan

The Village Hall Committee has also undertaken a number of internal improvements to the hall and its facilities, including the refurbishment of the toilet areas and the installation of a new partition wall between the main hall and the lounge area.

The Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee have also agreed the basis for the setting up of a joint fund to accumulate capital for agreed areas of future major maintenance.

I should like to record, on behalf of the Council, our appreciation of the tremendous efforts that are made by the Village Hall Committee in managing this facility on behalf of the village.

3 Proposed Skate Park In the Spring of 2011, a lengthy discussion took place within the Council on the possibility of establishing a skate park in Nettleham, with Mulsanne Park being the then most suitable location, should the Council decide to proceed. A number of concerns were, however, raised about potential noise, the cost to the Council and the relatively small number of beneficiaries.

The Council was generally sympathetic of the need to provide youth facilities in the village, although it questioned whether a skate park was the optimum means of achieving that objective.

A Skate Park Steering Group was set up comprising two Councillors (Cllrs Joe Siddall and Mrs Susan Harland), Ward Councillor Ray Sellars and 3 residents.

Under the Localism Act 2011, Parishes have the opportunity to produce a Neighbourhood Plan (NP) in conjunction with their community. A NP may, for example, show where new homes or other buildings could be built, specify design criteria for any future development, or seek to protect a valued area of local green space. Alternatively, Parishes may decide to draw up a Neighbourhood Development Order (NDO) for a particular site, which grants automatic planning permission for building on that site, so long as it meets any specified conditions. However, before a NP or a NDO can come into force, they would need to be audited by an independent examiner to ensure that the documents conformed to relevant planning rules. In addition, the NP and NDO must gain support from a majority of local people voting in a Referendum.

At the Parish Council’s Budget Meeting in November 2011 it was decided that the Council should produce a Neighbourhood Plan for our village and a sum of £7,000 was allocated towards the cost of the work to be undertaken during 2012/13 on producing the same. Based on current Government estimates, it is anticipated that the work on producing a NP for the village will take between 2- 3 years and will cost in total some £20,000; the Council is exploring possible funding options towards, at least part of, this cost.

Chairman’s Annual Report 5 Linelands Care Home As residents will be aware from media coverage, Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) has now taken the decision to close Linelands on the 31 May 2012. Officers from LCC, West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) and Community Lincs (CL) attended the 20 February 2012 Parish Council meeting and outlined options for the future use of the site; these included possible use for housing for the elderly and affordable housing by a housing provider.

Indeed a need locally for elderly and affordable accommodation has been identified in a Housing Needs Survey carried out jointly by WLDC and CL. It was pointed out by the Council to the representatives of LCC, WLDC and CL that it was imperative that they provided assurances that any accommodation that may be provided on the site would be for local people and a mechanism needed to be built into any planning process to ensure this objective was achieved.

6 Lincoln Rugby Club The Parish Council has continued its positive dialogue with the Rugby Club to ensure that the ‘benefits’ to the village that were promised by them at the time of the submission of their planning application will be delivered. It is understood that, subject to weather conditions, the Rugby Club are hopeful of having the facility ready for use at the start of the 2012/13 season.

7 Planning At the time of the preparation of this Report, 39 planning applications had been received during the year (April 2011 March 2012) relating to all aspects of development in the village, but primarily extensions and improvements. The proposed development of the former Nettleham Garage site comprising 10 dwellings has been granted planning permission by WLDC. During that period there were 3 refusals of planning permission by WLDC. 8 Meetings of the Council (i) The Council met on 13 occasions during the past year; its Committees, namely the Property Committee met on 8 occasions plus 2 Village Inspections and the Fieldpaths Advisory Committee met on 2 occasions. In addition, 3 Council Members attended meetings of the Mulsanne Park Users Committee (MPUC), which met 5

times. The Planning Committee, which meets as and when required, continues to monitor all planning applications on behalf of the village. Attached at Appendix A is a schedule showing the attendance of Parish Councillors at all relevant Council and Committee meetings. (ii) The Parish Plan Action Committee, which is supported by the Council, met approximately bi-monthly. The Committee continued to follow up and pursue the issues that were highlighted in the Parish Plan that was published in September 2007. However, it was decided that this Committee had achieved the majority of the actions required in the Parish Plan and it was therefore recently disbanded.

9 The Old School The demand for hire of the Old School has increased with several new organisations now using it on a regular basis.

The continuing maintenance of this Grade II Listed building is of considerable importance to the Parish Council and in the last 12 months this has included external re-pointing of the building. The internal redecoration of both the large and small halls is imminent.

The Parish Council has agreed that the rates for hire of the halls at the Old School and the Mulsanne Park Pavilion will be increased from 1 April 2012. This is the first increase in three years. There will continue to be reduced prices for defined groups, such as those who are non-profit making and for those booking regular slots.

Football Club undertook this work and the stand was re-opened in November 2011.

The multi-purpose tennis courts have been cleaned and repainted. These two ‘public’ tennis courts are available to members of the public at a cost of £5.00 for a morning, afternoon or evening session; payment can be made to a Tennis Club representative or at the Parish Office. There has been increased usage and income, since the work was undertaken.

In an attempt to reduce the incidents of nuisance and vandalism at Mulsanne Park, the Parish Council has introduced security patrols comprising a security officer and dog. These patrols are usually carried out during the hours covered by the dusk to dawn curfew and have proved very effective in reducing the problems.

11 Parish Precept 2012/13 At the Parish Council’s Budget Meeting (1 November 2011), the Clerk submitted a proposed budget for 2012/13 with a zero increase on the Parish Precept (£111,886).

However, during the course of the meeting the allocation identified for the production of a Neighbourhood Plan (see item 4 above) was considered to be insufficient for the successful completion of this project. It was therefore decided that the Neighbourhood Plan allocation be increased by £3,000, which resulted in an increase in the Parish Precept to £114,886.

This equates in real terms to an increase of less than £2 per household per year or 4 pence per week based on 1,570 households in the Parish.

12 Village Facilities

10 Mulsanne Park The sports field continues to be extensively used by the football, tennis and cricket clubs and is maintained to a high standard.

The Sports Pavilion is used regularly by a Children’s After School Group who meets every weekday; it is also let for Art Classes during the week.

Regular visitors to Mulsanne Park may have noticed that the football stand had to be fenced off last summer for a period of time due to safety concerns. This followed a Health & Safety (H&S) inspection which, together with a structural survey, identified a number of areas that needed attention.

It was ascertained that removal of any damaged or dangerous seating, together with the replacement of one steel supporting strut and some minor works would address the H&S concerns. The 21

(i) Best Kept Village Competition 2011 Regrettably this year, after our three successive wins, the village didn’t get beyond the first round. The main areas we were marked down on were the appearance of the Village Hall and its adjoining noticeboard, the poor state of the planters at the entrances to the village and the lack of car parking at Bill Bailey’s Field! Hopefully those (with the obvious exception of the last) will have been addressed in time for the 2012 (50th Anniversary) competition, which runs this year from July to September. (ii) Memorial Benches Over the last year the Council has had one new bench donated, which replaced the bench installed in the cemetery. Chairman’s Annual Report (iii) Tree Maintenance The Parish Council’s annual tree maintenance programme has included some clearance work at Riverdale, where significant growth of ivy and trees were beginning to cause concerns as to the eventual stability of those trees and consequential blocking of the Beck.

This will ensure that the planting of hazel, thorn, wild rose and guilder roses will make better growth and ultimately result in a more attractive environment.

Unfortunately, some vandalised hazel, planted last year in Green Lane, has had to be replaced. The Council has sought to enhance the environmental planting in the amenity areas on the north side of Washdyke Lane and at the Old Quarry.

The two willow trees by the Beck in Watermill Lane were found to be showing signs of distress and are dying from the top downwards. It was decided in February 2012 by the Council’s Property Committee that the trees should be felled. Following representations received from local residents, the felling was, however, postponed. Simultaneously ownership of the trees was found to be vested in LCC Highways. The County Arborculturist agreed that the Parish Council’s assessment of the trees was correct and that the long term solution was the felling of the trees and their replacement with a more suitable specimen, eg alder. However at the time of writing this Report, it is understood that LCC, as an interim measure, is currently looking to remove the deadwood from the large willow tree only, pending further consideration of the matter. (iv) Larch Avenue Play Area Following the partial failure of some of the play surface tiles at Larch Avenue the Property Committee decided that the existing rubber tiles be overlaid with artificial grass-type matting, thereby maintaining its long-term viability. Some of the play equipment there has also been painted this year.

The replacement of the timber edging to the play equipment has already been undertaken as the first stage of this work. (vi) The Beck Wall behind the Old School Regular users of this footpath would have noticed that part of the wall developed a tilt towards the Beck. (ii) Traffic Issues on The Green area Discussions are currently taking place with LCC Highways and the Nettleham Neighbourhood Policing Team to seek a solution to the problems being experienced by residents regarding vehicles parking in the vicinity of the Village Green and Vicarage Lane. Further details on this matter will be reported at future Parish Council meetings and in Nettleham News.

At the Parish Council’s Budget meeting it was decided that the burial ground fees be increased from 1 April 2012. These fees have not been increased since 1 April 2009. A full list of the fees can be found on the Parish Council’s website or hard copies are available from the Parish Office.

The Parish Council would like to continue to commend the excellent quarterly publication of Nettleham News and in particular it’s Editor, Mr Nigel Kingston.

14. Donations The Council agreed to set up a Grant Application Scheme for the award of funding from the Council’s Section 137 monies. Grants have been given to various charitable and local organisations. Those include Nettleham LIVES (£175), Stepping Stones Playgroup (£100) to help with the construction of a vegetable garden, Nettleham Cricket Club (£300) towards a new digital scoring system and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Street Party (£100) towards the purchase of medals for the children attending the street party.

Applications for the 2012/13 Grant Scheme will be accepted between 1 April 2012 and 31 July 2012 and application forms are available from the Parish Office.

The Council also administrates the John Moss Charity and allocated £100 each to the Age Concern Coffee Morning and Linelands for their Christmas party.

15 Maintenance of Highways and Traffic Matters

Following the destruction in high winds of part of the fencing surrounding the Larch Avenue Play Area, a new metal fence was erected. This was funded from part of the money endowed to the Council by the original developers of the estate.

The Council agreed to continue to fund the publication of the Nettleham Handbook & Directory, the successor to Nettleham Now. The booklet provides information on local businesses, suppliers and organisations and is distributed free of charge to all households as a centre-page pull-out supplement in the autumn edition of Nettleham News.

17 Fieldpaths Advisory Committee The Fieldpaths Committee (Chair: Ms Sara Bright), which is an advisory committee of the Parish Council, organised successful spring/summer and autumn village walks and continues to monitor all aspects of the fieldpaths around the village.

18 Police Custody Suite In early March 2012 the Parish Council were notified by the Lincolnshire Police Authority of their intention (subject to the grant of planning permission) to build a brand new ‘Custody Suite’ at the Police HQ site on Deepdale Lane. At the Parish Council meeting on the 20 March 2012 it was decided that the police should be requested to hold an exhibition in the village in order to explain their proposals to residents and that this would be followed by a Public Meeting on the matter.

Chairman’s Annual Report particularly in view of the village hall re-roofing project, which Julia personally managed with distinction. (ii) Ian Gerrard, Facilities Manager, likewise continues to do a first-class job on behalf of the Council. He has been instrumental in the maintenance and improvement works being undertaken at Mulsanne Park and the Old School; he also co-ordinates the Council’s Property Committee and the Mulsanne Park Users’ Committee. Bishops Palace Site Progress Report April 2012 Although the site looks unchanged (apart from the initial grass cutting) a large amount of work has been going on in the background.

Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) Consent Before we can make any holes, or disturb the site surface in any way, we need approval from the Secretary of State. This will be subject to consultation and advice from English Heritage. We have therefore been in discussion with English Heritage (and Heritage Lincs) regarding our plans to ensure that they are completely happy and will recommend approval of the plans. We now have that assurance, the Church Commissioners (land owners) have been notified and the SAM consent form has been submitted.

Planned works on site We plan to remove the old barbed wire and erect a fence along the northern boundary adjacent to High Street and behind the Methodist Chapel, as well as following along the back of the gardens backing onto the site along the western boundary. This will be traditional three-bar post and rail Lincolnshire fencing. We also plan to put a similar fence between the SAM site and the adjacent pastoral area with a gateway to provide access between the two zones.

A discovery trail, formed initially by closely-mown grass, will wind its way round the site and small signs will be placed at key interest points along the route describing the significance of each individual location.

The access ramp in front of the Methodist Chapel has been redesigned with a less severe slope and a short ramp into the site, to enable easier access for disabled persons. As this will entail some disturbance of the SAM site it was particularly important that we got the ‘OK’ from English Heritage for the design. We are in a position to start work on these activities as soon as we secure the necessary consent.

We also have interest from a voluntary organization to rebuild the dry stone wall at the southern boundary of the site. This is about 220m long, so will take some time to totally reconstruct.

We think it’s probably best to make a start on the 60m section which is at the southern edge of the pastoral area, which will not require special permission from English Heritage.

Additional funding We have also applied for additional funding from WREN to cover various enhancements to the scheme including distinctive entrance gateways. We should hear whether we have been successful in July.

Tree Planting

Nettleham Library News Children’s Half Term Craft Activity: 7 June from 10.00 - 12.30. ‘Vikings Ahoy’ is the theme and there will be craft activities based around this theme for children of all ages. Just come along on that morning and see what you could make.

Summer is on the way (hopefully) and it may be the time to start a new interest.

We have copies of the Summer 2012 Adult Learning brochure in the library, so do pop in and pick one up, as there are loads of courses from which to choose.

We will again be running the Summer Reading Challenge this summer and will have more details nearer the time.

We plan to establish a small wood, or copse, of heritage trees, including apples, in the pastoral area and additional small woodland grants are being sought to help with this.

Nettleham Woodland Trust is closely involved in all planting activities, including hedge planting at various points around the site boundary.

Heritage Research is under way into the history of the site and this will lead to a leaflet which will take visitors along the discovery trail, indicating points of interest and explaining their individual significance. Graphics will need to be produced for both the leaflet and the site information display boards and signs, but this is a longer term aspect.

Publicity Following the publication in the last Nettleham News the article on this project was followed by a feature in the Lincolnshire Echo on 15 March in their ‘Nostalgia’ section. Finally there was a 5-minute piece on BBC Radio Lincolnshire at 8.50am on the 16 April about the site and what we are doing.

So the word is getting out there.

Kathleen Emily Hesketh (nee Mansford) from notes specially written for Nettleham News by David Hammond, nephew of Kathleen Hesketh Kathleen’s grandfather Alfred Mansford married Charlotte Richardson of Humberstone in 1872.

Her father Herbert Alfred Mansford married Edith Ellen Harrison in 1909.

The Harrison family came from Haven Bank near Boston. Their children were: 1. Alfred Herbert Mansford b 1911 2. Kathleen Emily Mansford b 1913 3. Margaret Edith Mansford b 1914 4. Harrison Charles Mansford b 1920 About 1900, Kathleen’s grandfather installed the first lamp post in the village on The Green, approximately where the village sign is located today. She thought it was a gas light, in which case it could have been fed from the gas lighting system in Red House (still on The Green).

She remembers helping Rands the gardener to wind up the weights on the gas-making plant.

Rands the gardener at Red House for many It seems that the years Mansford family originated from Norwell Woodhouse, just over the Lincolnshire county boundary in Nottinghamshire. They then farmed at both Marlborough Farm at Aubourn and Scotland Farm at Eagle for several

generations, before moving to Nettleham in the mid-1860s.

The post office was established in the Mansford shop in 1904. They employed a full-time telegraph delivery boy at the post office and the area he covered by bike went right over to Short Ferry, about seven miles from Nettleham.

She kept a diary when at Hunmanby Hall school in Filey (using the 1930 edition of the Girl Guide diary - she was in Swallow patrol). The diary gives an insight into the

lifestyle of her and her sister whilst at boarding school, covering lessons, sports (particularly tennis and cricket), free time and walks in the surrounding countryside.

She showed an early interest in the school gardens and her fondness and enthusiasm for plants continued throughout her life.

She recalled being in London for the VE day celebrations and missing the last train to Lincoln. She travelled up to Peterborough with a group of servicemen and spent the night at the station. When all the others had left, the station-master lit the fire in the waiting room for her until the first train for Lincoln arrived. She added that her father was not impressed, as he thought she should have stayed in London and travelled up later.

She also liked to recall the times she spent with her grandmother Emily Harrison (nee Lepper), who was the daughter of a master butcher in Maidstone. She married Seth Harrison in 1874. He had a house in Nettleham built to his own design in 1913 and called it Kenlin (after Kent where his wife came from and Lincolnshire where he came from). In later years Grandma Harrison was nearly blind, but she was still able to cook if someone gave her the ingredients which she weighed by feel.

There were always home-made boiled sweets kept in an old butter dish with which the girls were rewarded if they read or recited a poem.

Kathleen wrote several notes relating to her childhood of which she had a good recall, even when well into her 90s.

“Our nanny Annie Cargill came from Tumby Woodside near Coningsby. About 1918-19 we went to stay with my father’s cousins, the Drewry family, and father’s uncle Henry Richardson at Humberstone for two weeks summer holiday and spent our days on the beach. We did not realise how lucky we were as children that we always had two weeks holiday every summer, no doubt helped by the fact that both my father and grandfather Harrison had cars. I think father had his first car around 1900, but I’m not certain what make it was.

Soon after Charles was born, Alfred, Margaret and I got measles and Charles went to stay with a nurse in the village for a month until we had all recovered.

When we moved from the shop house to Red House Martha Dawson was the maid.

Alfred and Charles went to the village school to start with, but Margaret and I had a governess. I remember the local walks she took us on in the afternoons, if the weather was good.

After this we went to school in Lincoln.

We were usually taken there by car, but one day I remember we had to meet the milk cart from Welton at the top of Washdyke Lane to get a lift into the city.

Grandpa Mansford gave us all bicycles and when Margaret and I started going to a private school, Chestnut House in Lincoln, we cycled there. The school was in Spring Hill and we always had to leave our bicycles in the yard of a public house in Eastgate. We stayed at Chestnut House until we hoth went to Hunmanby Hall boarding school in Filey when it opened in 1928.”

Kathleen had a number of treasured items: ●

a Methodist hymn book, dated 1767, which belonged to her great uncle Thomas Richardson

●

a leather writing case, given to her in 1931 just before she started her training at the Babies Hotel in London by her great aunt Sarah, wife of Sir Arthur Newsholme: former Chief Medical Officer of England

●

a valentine’s card, dated 1784, from the Richardson side of the family

●

a letter written by Peter Mansford to his brother (Kathleen’s grandfather) in 1862, just before he left to start a new life in Australia.

During a trip to London in the 1990s, she recalled previous trips she made in the 1920s with the family. They would travel down in the car from Lincoln to Barnet via the Great North Road (A1) and stay overnight at a local hotel. In the morning her mother and the children went shopping and sight-seeing whilst her father would go on business, including exchanging the car for a newer model.

Apparently he only bought newish second-hand cars, including Standards and Armstrong Siddeleys which had been chauffeur-driven, as he felt these vehicles would have been well-maintained.

In 1931 she went to train as a children’s nurse at the Babies Hotel and Nursery Training School in London. After this she worked as a nanny with various families.

During the war she was a relief matron in the Yorkshire area moving round covering staff absences in homes for evacuated children, particularly from London.

When she returned to Nettleham to look after her parents she became involved in the life of the village, following in the footsteps of her father as a member of the Parish Council and Welton Rural District Council. She was also a great supporter of the Methodist chapel as her father and grandfather had been and succeeded her mother and grandmother as local secretary of the Methodist Missionary Society.

This post was held by members of the Mansford family for over 100 years.

She opened a nursery school at Beck House in 1954 for 12 children aged three to five years and later moved to Gardene, where the nursery continued until her retirement in the 1970s.

She greatly enjoyed travelling and often spoke about a trip to Belgium with her sister in the 1930s. After the death of her parents and before her marriage, she travelled alone to Norway, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. After being widowed, she regularly visited family in Canada, the most recent occasion being in 2008 at the age of 95!

Personal Memories by Kathleen My grandfather, Alfred Herbert Mansford, was born in 1846 at Eagle, where his father was a schoolmaster. When he was 14 he was apprenticed to Mr Bates of Ingham, a grocer and draper. When he had time off he walked home to Eagle.

In 1871 he bought Walnut Close at Nettleham and built a shop and a house (where the Co-op supermarket now stands).

In 1872 he married Charlotte Richardson of Humberston and they opened the shop the same year. By 1892 grandfather advertised himself as a draper, boot and shoe dealer, clothier, grocer, and corn and flour store.

By 1906 he had extended the shop to include the Post Office. He delivered to other villages by horse and cart and dray.

My father, Herbert Alfred Mansford, was born in 1876. He went to a Methodist school in Yorkshire and afterwards was apprenticed to a firm in Doncaster.

When time allowed, he cycled home to Nettleham. He later worked for a firm in Newark before joining his father. In 1909 he married Edith Harrison of Lincoln and my grandparents moved to Red House, on The Green. Like my brothers Alfred and Charles and my sister Margaret, I was born at the shop house.

I have been told that horses were stabled in the Yard between 1914 and 1918. Sir Julius Cohen, who I believe was Master of the Burton Hunt, rented the Yard for a short time in the 1920s and installed electricity in all the buildings. The Yard contained three cottages and a barn that was let to Mr Trott to garage his bus (now flats for the elderly). The Yard also contained a large garage, let to Mr Lusby for his lorry, a blacksmith and joinery shop, about 30 stables, the Ride and its looseboxes (stables), and paddocks.

The Ride was about a quarter of a mile in circumference, with a wooden roof and a peat-moss floor on which to exercise the horses, and with allotments in the open centre. The Ride collapsed in the winter of 1947, due to the weight of snow and ice on the roof. Between 1941 and 1950, six stables were let to the District Council for use by the Home Guard No.13 Platoon, as a salvage depot for sorting paper and as a mortuary. By 1952, about 20 stables had been made into lock-up garages and the rest pulled down.

In 1920 we moved to Red House and my father sold the shop. I believe my father bought the Stable Yard in the early twenties. Red House had a large scullery, which he made into two rooms. Later, when the house was sold to a doctor, these became the waiting room and surgery. We were one of the few houses in the village with a bathroom, but I remember it was much more fun to bath in front of the kitchen range. The coach house was our playroom, with coconut matting that my father took off the walls of the harness room of the Stable Yard.

As village children we made our own enjoyment. Each winter, we in the Methodist Sunday School enjoyed preparing for a concert. The first Sunday in June was the Sunday School Anniversary and we all gave a recitation on the Sunday afternoon. Then on Monday we met at the Chapel at 8.30am to go off singing round the farms. Small children travelled in a waggonette and older children, choir and organ (!) in carts. We returned to The Green by 12 o’clock to go home for lunch.

At 2.00pm we went round the village singing. On our return to The Green, mother gave us a halfpenny chocolate bar.

service, and games on the field. My father was Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years.

In 1928, my sister and I went away to Hunmanby Hall boarding school for girls.

Then I went away to college in London to train for my work with children. During the war years, I worked on the Mobile Staff, in homes looking after children evacuated from London. I returned to Nettleham in 1950, by which time my parents had sold Red House to a doctor and moved into Beck House. My grandfather had taken the

thatch off Beck House, the oldest house in the village, in 1906.

In 1954, I started my nursery school, which had 12 places for 3 to 5 year olds.

Later, in 1965, I married Bert Hesketh, who had been a grocer in Codnor, Derbyshire.

We sold Beck House and built a bungalow behind it. I ran the nursery school there until it closed in 1977. When Bert died in 1990, he had been a Methodist Local Preacher for over 60 years.

My elder brother Alfred was a schoolteacher. He taught in Lincoln before moving to Northern in North Devon with his wife Doreen and children Ian and Kirsteen.

On leaving school, my sister Margaret went to agricultural college and in the 1930s, after working at a poultry farm, started her own poultry farm in Nettleham. She used the yard, paddocks, the field over the Beck and the field behind the council houses (now Highfields).

One of her incubators was for 1,000 chicks, which was considered large at the time. In 1943, Margaret married the Rev Harold Hammond, a Methodist Minister, and moved away from Nettleham. They had three children, David, Elizabeth and Stephen.

My younger brother Charles became an accountant and lives at Silkerston Common near Barnsley.

I followed my grandfather and father as a trustee of Nettleham Methodist Church and as a member of the Parish and District Councils. My father had been a Justice of the Peace for 33 years. In the 1920s, my mother started a Women’s Meeting at the Methodist Chapel and I am now President of that Meeting.

Looking back at village life years ago, I remember that most homes kept a pig for food. The last one we had was killed in the 1950s. This was a busy time in the kitchen, with pork pies, sausages, brawn and haslet to be made, and fat to be melted and turned into lard. Also hams, flitches and chines to be salted. A plate of fry was sent to friends and neighbours and the empty plate was traditionally returned unwashed, in order that the ‘good luck’ wasn’t inadvertently washed away!

Footnote: Kathy was for many years the guardian of a magnificent Neolithic axehead, believed to be up to 6,000 years old, discovered on her property in in The Rookery. It is hoped that this important historical artefact may eventually be returned to the village as part of its long and illustrious heritage.

Beckside Pre-school “I Can Do It!”

Staff News

We have been celebrating achievements at Beckside pre-school. The children have been showing us how independent they can be when putting on their own coats, shoes or wellies, organising themselves at lunch or at snack time, managing developmentally appropriate tasks and enjoying self-chosen activities.

Claire Evans will be embarking on the Foundation Degree in Applied Studies (Early Childhood) which she will begin in September this year. Claire was recently nominated as a finalist in the Lincolnshire and Rutland Skills Award after completing her Level 3 Diploma in Children’s and Young People’s Workforce. We were very proud of Claire when she came in the top 3 of her category. Claire was nominated for bringing discipline and commitment that gained her significant A level success to her chosen Apprenticeship.

We have created an area where achievement is valued and children’s self esteem is boosted. The children hang their achievement on our ‘achievement tree’ or it is acknowledged on an “I can do it” certificate, which is then put on the wall for them to see and take pride in what they can do. The children have also been showing us how they can ‘care and share’ with their peers. We have seen some lovely examples of this when they help each other to put their coat or apron on, fetch a tissue for someone, share a toy, or show concern if a friend has hurt themselves.

Helen Hancock, who is also studying for the Foundation Degree, will be entering her 3rd year in September. We wish Claire and Helen all the best in their studies.

All our staff continue to attend regular courses during the year to enhance their continuous professional development and to keep up to date with good practice.

This term we will be continuing our ‘Growing’ theme by planting vegetables in our tractor tyres and herbs in our ‘smelly wellies’. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association for the compost that they kindly donated to us and for their help and expert advice with our vegetable planting and revamping our sensory garden.

We have lots planned over the coming weeks including our annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic, our own Mini-Olympics Day, taking part in the Nettleham Carnival and of course our special Pre-school Leavers’ Get Together.

We will be making use of our outdoor area as much as possible to give opportunities for investigations of the natural world.

The children have been spotting ladybirds and other mini-beasts in the garden, using magnifiers and bug viewers to look at them more closely. To build on this interest in living things, we will be looking at the lifecycle of butterflies and frogs using pictures, reading stories and singing action songs and rhymes to help the children understand and sequence these processes and to learn about living things in our environment.

As well as planning for children’s particular interests, our focus will also be on the transition to school. This is an important and exciting time for our pre-school leavers and we will be supporting them to help make the transition an easy and confident one over the next few weeks.

Young Nettleham Photographer Young Nettleham photographer William Lee, 15, has been taking photographs for the last five years.

Last year he entered ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’ and won two sections of the youth class with photographs taken in and around Nettleham.

This follows on from the previous year when he succeeded in the same competition. His work was then exhibited at the National Theatre in London and included in the Collection Albums published in 2010 and 2011.

Most of his work is taken with a digital camera, but William has taken some photographs recently using different formats including 35mm, infrared and large format film. These are developed at home in his own darkroom, where he has experimented with techniques he has researched on the internet, including a developing fluid made with instant coffee!

Proposed Development of the Bishops’ Identified by residents as an important village amenity in the public consultation for the Community Profile and Action Plan in 2007, a recent successful bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund has now enabled the project to commence.

The focus is to develop better awareness and understanding of this Scheduled Ancient Monument site located in the heart of our community and also to create a valuable heritage amenity for the future.

It will also produce an attractive and informative venue for all ages to enjoy, including walkers, historical and archaeological students, schoolchildren, wildlife enthusiasts, etc.

A series of mown footpaths are to be created in the longer grass, to avoid the possibility of damage to any important archaeological features which may be located below ground level. A number of small interpretation boards at strategic locations around the site will enhance the experience of visitors.

The Bishops’ Palace site is also seen as an important educational facility, enabling a wide range of different outdoor activities by different age groups and children’s organisations. In addition, the site will provide opportunities for participation in traditional crafts including dry stone walling, hedge laying, etc, and will also encourage a greater diversity of wildlife species in the village.

Please note that the mown grass footpaths and planting diagram shown on the plan on the facing page are only conceptual and may be subject to later revision according to specific site limitations and the established locations of the major archaeological features of the site.

Carrying the Flame

A Man of Words The sudden death of Tom on 17 February 2012 has left a void in my life and indeed in the lives of our two daughters Lucy and Susan and granddaughter Rose.

Many readers will have met us on our walks in and around the village - Tom on his scooter (he suffered a stroke ten years ago which left him unable to walk).

Luckily for Tom, his keen intellect and memory was not wholly destroyed and certainly his cheerful disposition, always ready for a joke, was still intact.

Tom was born in Liverpool in 1938, but spent the war years at ‘Freshfield’ convent with the sisters, where his ashes will be scattered. After the war, he and his brothers and sister returned to an alien Liverpool and a father he did not know, as he served in the Royal Navy.

After his school days, being taught by the Jesuits at St Francis Saviour’s School (now Hope University) he left at 15 years of age and went to work at Dunlop and later Bird’s Eye, studying chemistry at night-school.

He came to Grimsby and worked for Findus in the labs and met me there. We married and Tom later secured a job with Union International in George, South Africa, where we spent over five happy years together - our two daughters being born there.

Whilst there, Tom studied for a BA with the Open University of South Africa, his subjects being English Literature and Greek Culture & Philosophy - his lifelong love.

After returning home in 1973, Tom went back to the frozen food industry and worked in Milton Kynes for Bejam, becoming the factory manager. But this was not enough for him, so he went to Cranfield and achieved an MBA in 1980 and afterwards secured a lectureship at Portsmouth Polytechnic where his learning and business acumen were just what they needed in the Business School.

He continued studying and achieved a doctorate from ‘Cranfield’ - he always said the years at Portsmouth were the happiest of his working life.

He retired from Portsmouth in 1996 and took a professorship at Pietermaritzburg for three years, where he developed the Business School. It was always too hot for me there, so, me being a country girl born and bred in rural Old Waltham, we came back to Lincolnshire and settled in Nettleham, where we have spent 14 good years together. Tom wrote his book Managing Values and Beliefs in Organisations (still in print with Pitmans) when he returned home.

I cannot finish my tribute to Tom without offering my grateful thanks to all the carers including Phyl, Sally, Janet and others at Linelands for lightening my load over the years, for the doctors and nurses at the Nettleham Medical Centre and also the daily carers from the Sue Ryder Foundation for all their efforts.

My grateful thanks and appreciation to all of you (Tom always had a penchant for the ladies who looked after him!).

I nominated my daughter to be a torchbearer through the London 2012 Organising Committee ‘Moment to Shine’ campaign last June, as I felt that she was giving so much of her time to help others, whilst juggling her own commitments.

At the young age of just 18 she has completed her D of E Bronze, Silver and Gold Award and her A Level studies.

In addition to this, her great love of netball led her to become a Level C Netball Umpire and Level 1 Netball Coach. She gives her time freely to umpiring matches across Lincolnshire and to coach younger children in netball skills, as well as playing at regional standard herself.

Natalie has also been involved in a number of projects abroad. She helped to renovate a school in Nepal, carried out volunteer work in India at a school for deaf children and last August spent two weeks coaching netball to adults in Zimbabwe.

Tens of thousands of exceptional nominations were received between May and June 2011. Those short-listed were put forward to selection panels across the UK, which judged each story anonymously.

With the standard so high, there were difficult decisions to be made as to who would be one of the 8,000 people carrying the flame. Nominees had around a 1 in 11 chance of being a torchbearer!

Natalie found out just before Christmas that she was one of the lucky ones and during March 2012 she was confirmed as an Official Torch Bearer. She will be ‘Carrying the Flame’ through Grimsby on 26 June 2012, with her proud family cheering her on!

Nettleham Medical Practice and Cherry Willingham Branch Surgery New Clinical Computer System The move to the new clinical computer system was completed on 23 May 2012.

Due to the volume of data that needs transferring and to ensure that everything was fully functioning, the practice closed at 1.00pm on 23 May. A number of the practice’s services may experience some unavoidable interruptions whilst we are in the transitional period: Online booking of appointments and online ordering of prescriptions will be unavailable from 7 May until 11 June.

Appointments and prescriptions can still be obtained in person or by telephone.

The results line will not be available from 16 May until 22 May. Where possible please allow longer for repeat prescriptions which are ordered between 23 May - 8 June.

Whilst we shall try and make the migration as smooth as possible, there will inevitably be some disruption whilst staff and GPs become fully trained in the new system.

Please be patient with all departments and staff during the first few weeks as they become familiarised with the new system.

Green Issues The practice has been enthusiastically looking at ways to increase recycling and therefore reduce its carbon footprint.

We already have in place a company that securely shreds all of our waste paper and then recycles it. However, from April 2012, we are now also recycling as much of our other waste as we can.

You may have seen our sun tubes in use in the waiting room at Nettleham and, to complement these, we have also installed solar panels which produce electricity which is used by the practice during the week and any residual electricity is sent to the National Grid.

Patient Participation Group and Voluntary Driver Scheme Sadly we have recently said goodbye to one of our long-standing members of the PPG: Fred Thompson. On behalf of everyone at the practice we would like to say a huge thank you to Fred for all his hard work whilst he has been a PPG member.

Our first Local Participation Report is now available to read on our website. The results of the survey and the report have led to us changing our appointment system. A summary of the new system is below: The way we book routine appointments to see a doctor has changed from Wednesday 9 May 2012.

Currently, most appointments are offered on the same day, regardless of urgency.

Following our recent survey of over 300 patients, we have agreed to make the following changes: We will be offering more appointments a few days ahead of when you telephone.

This should make it easier to see a doctor of your choice for routine matters.

However, it will inevitably lead to fewer appointments being offered several weeks ahead (the survey indicated only 3% of patients require this facility).

You will no longer need to ring at 8.30am on the day to be seen for routine matters and there will be a greater choice of appointments online.

Hopefully these changes will assist us to use the existing appointments more efficiently in the future.

Drought Information Council helps save water during the hosepipe ban West Lindsey District Council is taking action to combat the effects of the drought. Anglian Water implemented a domestic hosepipe ban for all its customers, which came into force on 5 April and will remain in place for an indefinite period.

This was a direct response to the serious drought situation across the east of England. Everyone is being asked to take action to help safeguard water supplies for this year, 2013 and beyond.

Residents are urged to put their hosepipes away to help save millions of litres of water. They are being encouraged to use collected rain water to water garden plants and instead of washing the car, simply wipe down the lights and number plates (for safety reasons).

The council has agreed to support the ban and has agreed to only wash its fleet vehicles once a month, except for hygiene and safety reasons Chairman of the Prosperous Communities Committee, Cllr Malcolm Parish said: “Residents have been given a hosepipe ban. Although the council is classed as a business, we must also act responsibly to reduce our own water consumption. We have voluntarily agreed to reduce the frequency of washing our fleet vehicles to just once a month, depending on health and safety reasons. We would urge everyone in the area to think carefully about the volume of water they use.”

Farewell Nettleham - Hello South America!

After ten happy years living in this lovely village, it is now time for us to move on to pastures new - and they certainly will be new!

Carolyn and I have felt a call from God for several years to serve overseas.

It has been a fairly long process, which started a couple of years ago. Through the Methodist Church Overseas Division we have been assigned the task of serving the Lord in Guyana in South America.

It’s quite a challenging assignment and won’t be very much like Nettleham at all! Guyana is in the tropics and the average temperature is 27°C virtually all the year round with humidity at around 90%! We shall be living about 30 miles east of the capital (Georgetown) in a village called Mahaica. I shall be overseeing eight churches, hoping to set up Street Pastors, and involved with prison ministry. Carolyn will be involved with

working in local schools, chaplaincy and other educational training ventures. It looks like we’ll be quite busy! We’re moving out of the manse at the end of July and hope to embark on some cultural training in Trinidad sometime in September.

We expect to be abroad for up to about three years and then, if the Lord is willing, we hope to return to the UK and continue ministry elsewhere in England.

Why are we doing this?

The answer is simple: we want to be channels of God’s love where we are most needed. We want to be able to share the good news that Jesus changes lives, forgives people who turn to him and give them a new start.

We have seen him do amazing things here in Lincolnshire and are trusting him to continue the same wherever we are sent. We are conscious of his promise to us which is recorded at the end of Matthew’s gospel which says: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

May we take this opportunity to thank those in the village, especially at Nettleham Methodist Church, for supporting us, praying for us and travelling along with us over these ten years. We believe Nettleham is a very blessed place and pray that many more of the residents will come into a living relationship with Jesus.

A Fond Farewell from the Local Ministry Team It is with sadness that we say ‘Goodbye’ to Mark and Carolyn. They arrived ten years ago with their daughters Jo and Emily and made a home in The Chestnuts.

We watched the girls mature into two beautiful young women, and were delighted by their successes at school and university. We wish them every blessing in the years ahead.

Mark’s love of the Bible, and his desire to walk by its teachings, has been inspirational. He has led us by example, and his obedience to the directing of the Holy Spirit has taken him into challenging and fruitful areas. For a number of years he was Chaplain at Lincoln Prison, a role which he loved, and his caring ministry made a big impression.

Mark and Carolyn brought with them fun and laughter. They owned a vibrant and transparent faith and complemented one another in their ministries. The primary school children will know them well from their visits, along with Nettie the puppet, to their school assemblies. Carolyn was a teacher for five years at Nettleham Infants School, and, subsequently, at Scothern Primary. At both schools she introduced a successful after-school club: ‘Kingdom Kids’.

He also initiated, and joined the team which manned a Christian stall at the ‘Mind, Body and Spirit’ events at the Lincolnshire showground.

Both Mark and Carolyn were excellent communicators and teachers and we honour Mark for accepting the challenge to teach on the topic of ‘The End Times’ for one of his Circuit Teaching Courses a subject avoided by many, but ably presented over five weeks to packed houses!

He greatly enjoyed taking the ‘God Pod’ bus to William Farr and Cherry Willingham schools, where the pupils would gather at lunch-times for debate and discussion.

Mark had the heart of an evangelist and loved to share his faith with others.

He and Carolyn led numerous Alpha Courses, together with Parenting and Marriage courses. They longed to see family life strengthened and enriched.

During the summer school holidays, Carolyn, with the assistance of a gifted team, ran a series of children’s ‘Holiday Clubs’ at the Methodist Chapel, which were always packed out.

Mark also held a place on the Management Board of the Lincoln Street Pastors, providing care for the vulnerable on the city streets at night.

During his last two years, Mark took the role of Superintendent of the Lincoln North Circuit, which meant oversight of sixteen churches, so the amount of time he was able to spend in Nettleham was limited.

However, he still managed to bring comfort and support to the bereaved and visited the sick, frequently praying for their healing and anointing them with oil. Many recipients spoke of release, or of a speedy recovery.

Mark and Carolyn, may we take this opportunity to warmly thank you, publicly, for your contribution to the life of our village over the last ten years, specifically, for your input in Nettleham Methodist Church. As you move on now to take up very different challenges in Guyana, we wish you God’s richest blessing. The ‘Farewell Service’ in Nettleham will be at 10.00am on Sunday 29 July in Chapel.

We look forward to welcoming, in September, our new Minister: Rev Alan Swann and his wife Julie.

We’ve had another busy few weeks at Stepping Stones Pre-school.

Our garden is looking beautiful and the children have been busy planting, amongst other things, potatoes, carrots, onions, sweetpeas and herbs. The plum tree is covered in blossom, so we are hoping for another bumper crop this year to harvest and eat at snack time.

The children have also helped Julia plant some colourful flowers in the Rainbow Garden. Part of the garden has been left uncultivated so that the children have an area where they are free to dig for treasure, or make mud pies, which still seems to be a very popular pastime for the children in this technological age!

Dinosaurs is something else children never seem to tire of. Our dinosaur themed week became two weeks as the children just couldn’t get enough of them! We matched them, counted them, drew them, played with them in the obligatory mud, learnt some dinosaur names and imagined how they would have walked if they had come to pre-school and the noises they would have made - it was agreed by all the children that dinosaurs ROAR VERY LOUDLY! So much learning was gained from all of this fun and the children didn’t even realise.

This again all makes their move onto school a little easier for everyone, parents and carers, teachers and, most importantly, the child.

Finally, we are very excited to announce that this August we are launching the Stepping Stones Holiday Club. The Holiday Club is open for children aged between 2 years and 7 years of age, but there are limited places, so to register your interest, or book a place, telephone 07521 858450 and ask to speak to Vicki or Suzanne. We will open at 7.30am and finish at 6.00pm and there are full- and half-days available.

We are open from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 3.30pm and take children from 2 years old to school age. If you would like to come and have a look around, or to put your child’s name on the waiting list, please get in touch using one of the methods detailed alongside.

In the run-up to the summer holidays, we’ll be preparing for the Nettleham Carnival in July, having our very own Olympic Sports Day and by the time you read this we’ll have probably already celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a street party after making some beautiful bunting and crowns to wear.

During the summer term, the children who are going to move on to ‘big’ school will benefit from visits from the reception class teachers from their prospective schools. This is a lovely way for the teachers and children to get to know each other before September, paving the way for a smooth transition.

Police News Crime Prevention Now that the warmer weather is here and people are starting to tend to their gardens, please make sure that your front door is locked. Previously we have had incidents where people have been in their rear gardens and they have been burgled. Please don’t become a victim!

Bicycle Marking The Nettleham Policing Team has been holding a series of bicycle marking events across the patch. If you would like your bicycle to be security-marked, please contact one of the team.

Lincolnshire Police Priorities Bicycle thefts are still a police priority in Lincoln and the outlying villages.

Whenever possible, we recommend leaving your bicycle in a busy area and in view of CCTV cameras.

Metal thefts countywide are still on the increase. We encourage members of the public to telephone us to report any suspicious activity and vehicles.

The police check for Waste Carrier’s License, vehicle condition, vehicle insurance and driving documents and any stolen metals.

NETTLEHAM & DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB The Nettleham Club is part of a nationwide organisation with the simple aim of promoting Friendship and Fellowship among members.

The Club is open to professional and business men who have retired, or nearly retired, and who live in the Nettleham District.

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at Scothern Garden Centre for a coffee morning, where wives and partners are welcome, and for lunch at Hemswell Court every third Wednesday.

A small committee operates the club in line with a constitution agreed by the members and we currently have 42 members.

In July and December we also invite wives and partners to attend the Lunch. In addition, we occasionally organise outings to places of interest to members.

Nettleham Ladies Badminton Club The club has been in existence over 25 years and a small, happy group of ladies meet to play every Friday at 2.00 until around 4.00pm (excluding school holidays) in the village hall.

Currently numbers are now down to the absolute minimum and more ladies are urgently required.

Skill level is not important and the games are always doubles, so partners are mixed and matched.

At 56%, West Lindsey is the best district in Lincolnshire for recycling and in the top 20 authorities in the UK. It is good to know that we are recycling more at home than ever before and, for most residents in the district, recycling is now a way of life.

COMPETITION RULES

1 The Nettleham News Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems containing a total of between five and ten stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. (Please note that it is two different KINDS of plants. Two varieties of the same plant are NOT two kinds).

1 The Nettleham News Top Tray class is for a collection

2 The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split into: 25 points for the colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display, and 10 marks for the overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes.

Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of

3 Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only - no seed-heads or berries will be allowed.

4 The vase can be any shape, size and material, but must be in proportion to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase itself.

5 No accessories whatsoever, such as bows and additional foliage, will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to that stem, is allowed. Packing material including Oasis - to keep the stems in place, is allowed.

6 The winner of the Nettleham News Top Vase class will receive the Top Vase Gold Award (+£5).

The runner-up will receive the Silver Award (+£3) and the third place will receive the Bronze Award (+£2).

NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant.

The different kinds of plants need to be taken from different genera. For instance, pinks, carnations and sweet william (which are all dianthus) would not be classed as different kinds.

Only fresh, home-grown flowers can be used in the vase. No dried or silk flowers are allowed.

A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers and which is taller than it is wide at its widest point.

The Nettleham News Top Vase class is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display single species classes at shows.

Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Vase class, bearing in mind that the entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.

Judges and exhibitors should note that the display has to be viewed all round.

The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors’ cards.

Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to, and decided by, the show officials.

Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification

YOU DON’T HAVE TO RUN! Relay for Life 21/22 July 2012 Welton William Farr School Relay for Life - it’s not just for girls, you don’t have to wear pink and you don’t have to run! Any age, any ability can take part, it’s a non-athletic event and everyone is very welcome!

We are well under way with our plans for this year’s Relay for Life Lincolnshire.

So far, we have 32 teams registered for this year’s event. We will have music, food and refreshments, activities, displays, stalls and a wide variety of entertainment over the whole 24 hours, which starts at 12 noon on Saturday 21 July.

Many thanks to all those from Nettleham who have already become involved with Relay in some way, whether by entering a team, running an activity, having a stall, etc, on the day - it’s great to have to have you on board!

Alternatively you could come along over the 2 days and enjoy the wide range of activities and music, and the great family and community atmosphere that’s Relay.

HELP LIVES

SAVE LIVES All live in the village and give their time freely to provide cover, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Nettleham LIVES celebrated a significant milestone - 4 March 2012 this being the 10th anniversary of the First Responders team being called out to medical emergencies around the village.

Although we haven’t got exact figures for the early years, we average around 100 call-outs per year. During 2009 we had 119, in 2010 there were 106 and in 2011 there were 89 call-outs. So I suspect that we have already responded to over a thousand emergencies around the village.

The First Responders group formed in late 2000 and became fully operational on 4 March 2002, once volunteers had been recruited, trained and sufficient funds raised to buy the necessary equipment.

Pictured below are most of the team at one of our monthly meetings. We are planning a social evening, ten pin bowing, in March to celebrate our anniversary.

Today, we have 12 First Responders, 1 Intermediate Responder and 7 fund raisers and helpers, with several more people just about to complete their initial Responder training.

We’re a great bunch of people, who want to give something back to the community in which we live. Although we work hard together, we also enjoy the fun and camaraderie.

Over the course of the last ten years we’ve had a total of twenty-five Responders in the Nettleham group.

Nettleham Nature Notes Around Easter, on a day preceded by a heavy downpour after many dry weeks, I decided to take a bike ride around the village to have a look at the wildlife and flowers. It was a bright day and everything looked washed and colourful. After a mild winter, everything was much earlier and more prolific than usual.

I set off past the school and the church.

The rooks, flying backwards and forwards were calling and busy setting up their nests for the new season. As the leaves on their trees were scarce, they could be seen on the nests while their mates hovered and flew around. What would the village be like without these raucous callers? Much maligned, they are extremely intelligent and the subject of a great deal of study.

The magnificent chestnut tree, surely one of the major landmarks of the village, was bursting into leaf.

Around the White Hart, I saw the jackdaws which seem to be growing in numbers every year. I love their grey ‘balaclavas’ and beady eyes. They seem to be looking at you directly as you go by. They are messy nest builders and cottagers have to be careful these cheeky birds don’t build their nests in a chimney!

All around me blackbirds were darting around and the males were singing as they marked their territories ready for the breeding soon to come. Some spar with each other for their ‘patch’. They often fly low in front of cars as they dart across the roads - the reason why they are frequently seen dead at the roadside.

I cycled up Greetwell Lane. To my left and right I could hear skylarks singing. These are evocative birds and can be heard all year round. They nest on the ground and their numbers have dropped alarmingly owing to loss of habitat. Farmers who leave borders around their fields are to be praised as they have helped these brave little birds to make a small comeback.

Their song always makes me think of warm meadows and blue skies, even if I hear them in winter!

Over Danby Hill from where the Cathedral can be seen, a great deal of white dead nettle is flowering. This is the non-stinging variety and will flower for many months.

I was surprised to learn recently that nettles are part of the mint family. I have yet to try nettle soup, but can understand ancient peoples, after a hard winter, needing and wanting something green and fresh to eat. Wood pigeons seemed to be everywhere - they are tough birds and will survive even the hardest winters.

At the other end of the track, I turned right on to the old A46. Gorse is blooming very early around old telegraph posts and there were carpets of ground ivy with its purplish-blue flowers. Only two weeks previously I had stopped and watched a weasel down here darting in and out of a small hole, its black beady eyes spying me every time he surfaced and keeping him alert. They are beautiful little creatures, but despite their small size they can kill a rabbit with one sharp bite to its throat.

Past the Brown Cow and then down to the ‘Police Park’. All of the cherry trees were starting to blossom very early with their beautiful flowers.

On the right, as I entered the park, there was a blanket of dog violets under the trees which looked like a carpet. As I approached to take a photograph I noticed several bees buzzing around the flowers.

By the pool in the park, I watched as a lone coot walked across the grass and plopped gently into the water. There were two last year, but one had a damaged leg. I fear it may have been taken by a fox.

A heron has been seen by this pool and on one occasion two or three years ago, a cormorant. On the far side of the pool are some moorhens. The coots have a white blaze down their faces and the moorhen has long red legs and enormous feet!

At the end of the pool the real treat of my ride appeared. On a piece of land slightly set back from the path an abundance of flowers were blooming. I was overcome by their sheer beauty. There were cowslips, the tallest I had seen for years, snowy white wood anenomes, purple and white snakeshead fritillaries, daffodils and many more violets. The fritillaries are unique because no other flower exists with its chequer-board pattern on the petals.

On the other side were forget-me-nots and alkanet. The latter belong to the forget-me-not family, but are darker in colour and bigger. There was also some lungwort with its large spotted leaves.

I met a lady walking who told me that some of the flowers had been planted by children from the school. Their effort is paying off and much appreciated.

Under a chorus of bird song, I walked slowly through the wood. I can think of nothing lovelier than the chorus of birdsong early in spring. Blue tits, blackbirds, robins and pigeons sang to their hearts’ content as the breeze blew through the trees. Sheer magic as Mother Nature takes a deep breath and serenades us with her beauty after the dark days of the winter.

The path through the wood is now well shaded with leaves, particularly hawthorn.

The early shoots of this native plant can be eaten raw and I can never resist trying some when it is so young and fresh.

We used to call it ‘bread and cheese’ when we were children.

I love the wildlife in the village and every week brings new delights. We have a hedgehog in a box in the garden and a wren sings lustily on the fence each morning before he goes through the pots of pansies looking for insects. These tiny birds are fragile and hard winters often wipe out large numbers of them. The mild winter seems to have helped them as I have heard many more this spring. We have collared doves visiting the bird table, along with various tits and goldfinches feasting on the Niger seed.

Nettleham Village Sign Readers who are perhaps new to the village may be interested to know the rationale behind the images which appear on our familiar village sign on The Green (from an article believed to have appeared in Lincolnshire Life magazine - date unknown)

The design of the sign is based on ideas submitted to a committee in 1979 by Claire Hill (then aged 11), Fiona Hill (then aged 7) and John Horner. The committee was formed by Kay Horner who, as President of Nettleham Women’s Institute in 1979, first suggested the idea of a sign to the Parish Council on behalf of the WI members. Constructed of English oak, the sign was carved and painted by Graham Stringer from Radcliffe on Trent, near Nottingham.

The main picture panel depicts a 13th century Bishop in his garments of the time, followed closely by a Bishop of the 14th century with a mitre which is narrower and taller. In the centre background is Nettleham Parish Church of All Saints as it might have been in the 16th century.

To the left of the panel, on a hill amongst the trees, is the spired Lincoln Cathedral dating from the 14th century. It was the Bishops of Lincoln who established the Manor House, or Bishops’ Palace, in Nettleham as their home from about 1209 up until 1590, after which it fell into disuse before being demolished in 1630. It is believed that some of the stone from the former Palace was used to build

houses in the High Street, and probably the watermill in Mill Lane.

Below the Cathedral is an emblem indicating other historical associations of the village. It is set against a background of blue and silver wavy lines symbolising water, as a reminder that the Romans piped their water to Lincoln from the Great Beck, or ‘Roaring Meg’ as it is known, which runs through Nettleham. The emblem itself shows a martlet (or dove) and a cross from the reputed arms of Edward the Confessor, whose widow, Editha, gave the church to an abbey in Normandy. Then it came into the ownership of William the Conqueror and his successors, indicated by two Royal Lions. In 1101, Henry I and his wife, Maud, gave the village to the Bishops of Lincoln, indicated by the Bishop’s mitre. Finally there are the Princes of Wales’ feathers.

The carvings on the spandrels below the name show, on the left, the crest of Bishop Hugh of Wells who in 1209 was consecrated Bishop of Lincoln.

It was he who built the Manor House in Nettleham, the site of which is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Bishop Hugh of Wells was named in the Magna Carta (1215), and it was he 55

who rebuilt the Parish Church about 1219. His sculptured portrait can be seen at the top of one of the nave pillars in the church.

The right hand spandrel depicts the crest of Bishop John Dalderby who became Bishop of Lincoln in 1300, and who in 1301 gave hospitality to Edward I at the Manor House whilst the King attended the Parliament held in the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral.

The King stayed at Nettleham from 20th January to 12th February, and it was during this visit, on 7th February 1301, that he made his son, Edward of Caernarvon, then aged 16 years, the first English Prince of Wales.

On the other side of the main panel is an early morning rural scene set around the old watermill at the ford in Mill Lane, with the miller loading sacks of grain onto his cart.

The spandrels on the second side depict, on the left, Lincolnshire County Council represented in Nettleham by Lincolnshire Police whose new headquarters were opened in 1980, and on the right the crest of the Womens’ Institute, the initial sponsors of this village sign.

The Value of Your Local Library I have always loved libraries. They are welcoming and friendly. If you can’t find a book, it can usually be reserved and today you can even receive an email when it’s available!

During the First World War nearly six million horses were killed. They were taken from all over the country and sent to the front to pull artillery, help with hospital vehicles and carry cavalry soldiers.

As a young person I was a foster-child and I used to escape to a wonderful Victorian-built library in North Birmingham where I could sit in the peace and quiet and read to my heart’s content. Even now I can still hear the squeaking polished wooden floor! I think libraries should be cherished and used.

This story, suitable for teenagers and adults alike, is based on the true story of Joey, a horse taken by the army to the front. It is written through the eyes of Joey himself and I think this works. Albert, his owner, stricken with grief when Joey has gone, signs up as an under-age soldier to search for his beloved animal.

I have written book reviews of four books obtained from the library in Nettleham and hope to encourage children and adults to call in, have a browse and maybe even reserve my recommendations, if they are not on the shelf.

Horrid Henry’s Underpants Horrid Henry’s Nits

by Francesca Simon Francesca Simon has written many Horrid Henry books. Henry surely is the little boy we do not want living next-door to us!

These books, suitable for children between the ages of five and ten (and adults!) are very, very funny and portray Henry, the boy who always seems to be in trouble.

I do not want to give away the ending.

This story will stay with you for a very long time, highlighting as it does the futility of war, the bond between humans and animals and the need to be kind to each other, particularly in times of adversity.

A German, caring for Joey and another horse, said to them: “You two are the only rational creatures I’ve met in this stupid war”.

I don’t think you will be dry-eyed when you have finished this book, but, despite the horror of the lives of the horses, it is an uplifting and courageous story.

The Olive Tree

by Carol Drinkwater

They are just as good if they are read out loud first. I doubt that there would be many children who would not want to read them again and again.

This book was suggested to me by a lady I met in the library.

I confess I had avoided Carol Drinkwater’s books, expecting them to be lightweight.

I had remembered her from her actress days in All Creatures Great and Small. From page one I was drawn into this travelogue.

Even as an adult I found these books laugh-out-loud funny. Henry is a reminder of Just William and Roald Dahl stories for younger children. They are wonderfully illustrated by Tony Ross.

It is apparent that she is totally besotted with olive trees. She owns an olive farm in Southern France and is genuinely concerned about the fate of this amazing old tree, her love for it shining through on every page.

Nearly twenty have been written, so there are many to choose from in the library.

She leaves her home and travels alone for months around the Western Mediterranean searching for ancient olive trees. Her research is meticulous and her knowledge of the history of the various countries is fascinating. She travels to Spain, Morocco, Algiers, Sicily and Italy.

Algiers is particularly dangerous and she can only cross it with the aid of the country’s beekeepers.

Each of these books contains four stories covering such topics as Henry’s nits, his great idea for making money writing his friends’ thank-you letters and the tale of the ghastly underpants he received for his birthday. The tales are not long and are suitable for bedtime.

War Horse

by Michael Morpurgo Michael Morpurgo, considered by many to be the children’s champion, has again written a wonderful book based on a true story and the subject of a Steven Spielberg film.

Along the way she learns of the crazy bureaucracy of the EU, the irrigation of olives in Spain which is depleting the water table and the heavy-handed use of 57

pesticides, leading her to despair of the future of this noble tree.

She brilliantly describes the people she meets, their kindnesses to her, sharing their meagre resources and giving her overnight accommodation. She also witnesses abject poverty of people living at subsistence levels.

She is a skilled wordsmith and I am pleased that I took up the lady’s suggestion and read this book.

A Fine Balance

by Rohinton Mistry I have to say that this is the finest fiction book I have read for many years. I was introduced to this novel when I gave out books on World Book Night last year.

It remained on my shelf until the autumn and one day I picked it up. That was it I could not put it down.

The author, Rohinton Mistry, was born in Bombay in 1952. In 1975, at the height of the troubles in India, he moved to Canada.

He had a degree in mathematics and then gained a second degree in philosophy and English.

He wrote much before this book and has won many literary prizes. He wrote this book in 1996 and yet it seems that only recently people are taking notice of it.

It is a sweeping story of India, set between the years of 1975 and 1984, covering the lives of four main characters in the political upheavals. We are taken through their fight for survival and attempts to rise above the caste system.

There is a widow trying to make it on her own, a student furthering his education and two members of the caste of untouchables breaking away. Their lives become intertwined and reflect the effects of the caste system, the poverty and survival against all the odds in this epic novel. A government, corrupt and at times cruel, seems to treat the lower orders with utter contempt.

Nettleham Cricket Club After the unseasonal warm weather of March, mid-April welcomed in the start of the cricket season, together with heavy showers and the hosepipe ban; this must be the wettest drought in history! So to no one’s great surprise, the two opening weekends of the cricket season were cancelled, due to water-logged pitches.

Winter nets have now finished at Minster School with an excellent turnout from both junior and senior members, and training has now moved up to the club at Mulsanne Park.

Senior sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm, and juniors on Friday evening, with registration at 6.15pm for training between 6.30pm 8.00pm. Anyone is welcome to join our sessions, as we pride ourselves as a club which can offer cricket to all abilities.

During the winter the committee have been busy preparing for the forthcoming playing season.

The Club continues to improve its facilities and we have recently replaced our old electronic scoring system which had been in use for at least the last 25 years. The new digital system (see photograph below) is clearer, smarter and will enable the Club to develop a new online scoring service.

It’s anticipated that the senior leagues in the county will require all clubs to move to this system over the next few years. A substantial amount of fund-raising during the last five years has taken place to enable the system to be purchased. Chris Brown, our previous Chairman, organised a number of events, notably Summer Balls, which contributed substantially to the project fund. Thanks to all those who have helped in this venture and in particular the Parish Council for providing a small grant last year.

In addition we have been able the replace the practice nets, providing a safer environment for the juniors and seniors to hone their skills.

We have also been able to replace the heavy old sightscreen with new much more movable ones, which our groundsmen John Dingley and Dave Ranshaw are very pleased about. Finally the canvas on the three covers has been replaced after several years of service (see photograph above).

Our thanks go to West Lindsey District Council, Councillor Ray Sellars, who kindly allocated some monies from his ‘Local Councillor funds’ and the ECB for a small grant towards the replacement of the above equipment. The costs of running a large cricket club like Nettleham are substantial

The Saturday 1st Team playing in the Lincolnshire Premier League will be captained

by Russ Binnington. This is his second time at captaincy and will be overseeing a rebuilding of this team, giving players that have progressed through the club’s youth teams and gained experience last year their chance to prove themselves. He is taking over from Dave Manby who has stepped down this season as he is getting married to Michelle Hall, and everyone at the club sends their warmest wishes.

The club’s overseas player for this season is 27-year old Juan Grobbelaar from Cape Town in South Africa who plays for Northerns Goodwood in his home country. He is an opening bowler who also has the ability to bat, as well as being a Level 1 Coach.

Friday 13 April saw the Junior Open Evening at Mulsanne. This was a chance for all junior members to meet their managers for the forthcoming season, purchase club kit and for parents to find out more about how the junior section of the club is run. Joint junior cricket co-ordinator Dave Lea explained that junior cricket is the lifeblood of the club and it is fiercely proud of its reputation for providing both coaching and competition for young people in the area.

All coaching is delivered by fully qualified coaches who are in receipt of their English Cricket Board Coaching Awards which include first aid training and full screening of their suitability for working with young people.

Nettleham Cricket Club is an ECB Focus Club, which is awarded to cricket clubs by the England & Wales Cricket Board when the cricket club is able to demonstrate that it meets the ECB Clubmark criteria in duty of care and safeguarding children; the cricket programme the club offers; Sports Equity, Ethics and Club management. The club’s Child Welfare Officer is Trudy Connor who welcomes any enquiries from parents or children.

The club is also boosted by the arrival of several players from Carholme Cricket Club, which unfortunately closed at the end of last season, and they will play in the club’s senior teams this year.

The Saturday 2nd Team captain for this season is Ben Pearse and his team will be playing in the Lincolnshire League Division 2 and will consist of a team of youth and experienced players aiming for promotion to Division 1.

The Sunday 1st XI have a new captain in Danny McCardle and will be playing in the highly competitive Lincoln Sunday Premiere League.

The Sunday 2nd XI is again captained by Chris Dobbs and shows a more recreational style of cricket in Division 3 of the Lincoln Sunday League. This gives the ideal opportunity for juniors to experience their first taste of senior cricket.

The Other Lincolnshire

by Frances J Frank (of Toronto) from an article which appeared in Lincolnshire Life in October 1966 The ambition of all visitors to Canada is to see the Niagara Falls. This trip holds a surprise for those whose home happens to be in Lincolnshire - for about thirty miles from Niagara a highway sign leaps out to announce that one is entering Lincoln County!

A few yards further on is a lay-by where one can study a huge bill-board displaying a map of the County of Lincoln. Such places as Grimsby, Louth, Caistor and Grantham are but a few miles away and one immediately feels at home.

It was in 1792 that Lord Simcoe, the First Governor General of Upper Canada, called the area west of the Niagara River “Lincoln and Welland County.” Sixty-four years later, Welland County separated off and the north-western part of the area is the modern Lincoln County. No doubt the sharp cliff of the Niagara Escarpment, interrupting the naturally fertile plains, reminded Lord Simcoe of the Lincoln Edge traversing the flat farmlands of Lincolnshire in the old country.

LOGICAL BASIS It followed as a matter of course, that the settIements being formed were named after Lincolnshire towns. Here again the choice of name apparently had a logical basis. For example, Grimsby had a waterfront on Lake Ontario; Wainfleet had a swamp, long since drained; Caistor was well wooded; Gainsborough even had its own eagre - from time to time, south-westerly winds would cause water from Lake Erie to back up the Welland River and reverse tides of one to two feet were recorded.

The first permanent settlers of Lincoln and Welland County were United Empire Loyalists who fled from the United States in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Some of them were given lands by the Canadian Government, some of them bought ‘wild land’ for as little as 1/3d an acre.

All of them had left secure farmsteads so as to remain loyal to Britain, and all faced severe hardships because of this decision. For them, banishment to the United States was a punishment

second only to hanging, and dreaded even more than death!

After they had obtained land, their first task was the erection of a house this took about two days. Neighbours came and held a ‘raising bee’ cutting down trees and trimming logs. The result was a shelter of sorts - a very draughty one-room home which could later on be made more comfortable by filling the crevices with clay and bark and placing logs on the ground to form a floor.

URGENT TASKS But first there were more urgent tasks.

The rest of the land had to be cleared of trees and bushes; wheat, barley and oats had to be sown; potatoes and other vegetables had to be planted. The whole family was involved in this work. Later on, flax and hemp were added to the list of crops and were used to make cloth.

Meanwhile the women learned from the Indians how to treat the skins of wild animals so as to make clothes and shoes.

Natural disasters, such as the drought of 1787 and the hurricane of 1796, were foIlowed by the War of 1812 in which the County became a sort of ‘No Man’s Land.’ The unswerving loyalty of the settlers to the Crown resulted in their decisive victories at Stoney Creek and Lewiston. The ‘LincoIns’ played a gallant part in both these battles. Peace was signed in 1814 and at last the settlers could feel secure.

They continued to develop their farms, adding the raising of cattle to the growing of crops. The land responded to their care and it was not long before crops were larger than the needs of the local community. They began to trade with the rest of Upper Canada and the United States, with whom they were now on friendly terms.

Increasing prosperity allowed them to concern themselves with cultural matters and one-room schoolhouses were built. School was held only in the winter months; during the summer the children helped on the farm. Some families had to walk miles to attend school and in many cases the only pay of the teacher was to have free lodging for the winter.

However, a history book, written ninety years ago, states proudly that: “Citizens of Lincoln and Welland have a school system which is second to none in the Dominion and will compare favorably with all.”

Today, Lincoln County is still primarily an agricultuial region - the garden of Ontario. In the springtime visitors travel for miles to see the orchards in blossom; in June there is an influx of pickers for the cherry crop; in July for the strawberries; in August for the peaches; in September for the apple, plum and tobacco crops.

Subsidiary industries for the packing, canning and freezing of fruits and vegetables exist, but in the main the people are farmers, as proud of their heritage as any farmer in Lincolnshire.

All Saints Parish Church, Nettleham An Exciting Summer Ahead We’re looking forward to an exciting summer - in June we celebrate with Queen Elizabeth II 60 years on the throne and in July we throw ourselves into the Olympics (or maybe for most of us, we throw ourselves onto the sofa in front of the TV for two weeks of vicarious activity) then a couple of weeks to recover before we are off again with the Paralympics.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee sets us up for a summer of celebration. Here in Nettleham, and in each of the villages I serve, we are holding special events - a ‘street’ party on the village green, lighting a beacon, special Jubilee lunches, teas and parties - jubilee food, and everything red white and blue!

So what is a Jubilee, and why do we celebrate it? The idea of Jubilee is found in the book of Leviticus. It is an exceptional time, which comes round for the people of Israel every 50 years, celebrated to allow inequalities and imbalances within the community to be addressed. It stems from the idea that all we have, all that we enjoy, comes as a blessing from God. So in a Jubilee year, debts would be released, slaves set free, property returned. A year of liberation, of rebalancing the community, of rediscovering God-given relationships through generosity and care, particularly for those who were vulnerable, in need or had fallen on hard times. Those who had gained much from God’s generosity to them over the years were asked to be generous towards those who hadn’t enjoyed the same success.

In Israel, the Jubilee year was proclaimed with the blowing of a ram’s horn trumpet the word Jubilee derives from the Hebrew word for trumpet. Whilst I don’t expect to hear many ram’s horns sounding across the villages, I do hope that we will all take the time to shout about the many blessings that God gives us here in these lovely villages, pause in the celebrations to thank him for his generosity, and allow the Jubilee to be a time for each of our communities to come together in a celebration which everyone can share, perhaps finding an opportunity to address inequalities and injustices, and be generous to each other just as God our heavenly Father is generous to us.

The Church of England has provided a rather lovely grace for use at street parties, lunches, teas, etc, as we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. You may like to consider using this grace: O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, we give you thanks for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; for her steadfast faith and for her royal service to this nation and all the peoples of the Commonwealth.

Bless the food before us and the people beside us; may the sharing of this meal strengthen our communities, and nurture the bonds between us of friendship, hope and trust.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ who reigns as servant of all. Amen.

Summer is now well under way - let’s hope the rain that fell continuously in April has well and truly gone!

This year Lincoln District Scouts are celebrating 100 years in Lincoln. A special ‘100 year birthday’ St George’s Day parade was celebrated this year with balloons and banners decorating the cathedral and a special centenary cake given to each of the groups in the District.

Carrying on with celebrations we shall be taking part in several events surrounding the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee - our special ‘Royal Gala’ Scout and Guide Fete; the Nettleham Street Party and a fabulous Jubilee Campfire at Sudbrooke Campsite with the Guiding sections. Great fun!

The most recent Nettleham Community Market was held in March and again was a lovely morning sharing coffee, cakes and crafts. It was unseasonably warm weather for the time of year - the sun shone and we even had some tables outside!

The next Community Market will be on Saturday 23 June from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. Why not pop along and enjoy a lovely cup of Stokes’ Coffee.

Nettleham Twinning Association one of these ships before it is welded to its neighbour is daunting, as is the task of manipulating it accurately into place to ensure perfect welds.

MULSANNE 2012 This year was our turn to visit. After a long but comfortable day in our coach we got to Mulsanne on Easter Saturday evening to a warm welcome from our hosts who had planned a busy five days for us.

The following morning twinners, English and French, attended Easter Day Mass in the parish church where a special welcome was extended to the English visitors and two English hymns included in the order of service, ably led by a small choir of Nettleham Methodist Church members.

At the end of the Mass, at his family’s request, Terry Herrick’s last message to his friends, which had been read out by his son at Terry’s recent funeral in Nettleham, was read for his French friends, of which he had many. A poignant moment.

Our major outing was an all-day trip to St Nazaire to visit the shipyard where they build giant cruise liners (Queen Mary 2 amongst them) and also the Airbus Industries assembly plant.

Both plants are located around the WW2 Nazi U-boat pens, which remain, virtually undamaged by British bombing, within a huge reinforced concrete blockhouse whose demolition is unaffordable. It will continue to remain as an ugly reminder of less happy days.

Both the ship and aircraft production facilities were hugely impressive. The sheer size of every module or building block of

The Airbus Industries plant was no less impressive. Indoors, in virtually clinically clean conditions, working with far lighter and thinner materials, there was nevertheless a similarity, as the aircraft is built up from modular sections which have to match up with other modules to great accuracy in final assembly. This is done at Toulouse where the St Nazaire modules meet different modules from other EU plants (all the wings come from the UK).

Our final day visit for the whole Nettleham team was to the terminus, workshops and control centre of the Le Mans Tramway, which are on the outskirts of Mulsanne another fascinating visit which showed what lies behind Le Mans’ elegant new tramway system; elegant especially for its neatly trimmed grass between and alongside the rails, making it an attractive feature of the town.

I haven’t mentioned the many ‘aperitifs’, other outings, lunches and dinners which filled our programme. Our hosts were, as usual, generous to a fault. The visit passed very quickly and it seemed no time at all before we were back in the care of PC Coaches en route to Nettleham.

My lasting memory is of the contrast between the brutal, lowering architecture of the St Nazaire Blockhouse with its U-boat pens, still dominating the town, and the elegant shapes of the ships and planes being built at St Nazaire. Not quite swords to ploughshares, but close.

STOP PRESS NEWS On 16 June, the Association will once again be presenting the Scothern Players, this time in their Festival production of two one-act plays by Scothern playwright Gillian Plowman. The plays will be put on at the Village Hall at 7.30pm and light refreshments will be included in the ticket price (see Nettleham Noticeboard on page 3).

RB Camera Club Saturday 2 June should see Nettleham village awash with cameras as families take to the streets to party as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

In addition, on the Sunday, three groups of Holiday Fellowship walkers will be finishing at The Old School House and participating in an ‘Indoor Street Party’ - at least they won’t have to be taking the weather into consideration!

And, whilst on the subject of cameras, the judge of the recent ‘People’ Competition, Ray Brightman, in the process of judging nearly 100 images (black and white, coloured and digital) made the following observations as part of his judging commentary: a) “The eyes have it” - a rear view might be all that’s available at the time, but it’s the eyes of the subject that reveal the character and the emotion; b) Bend down (get down on your knees if necessary) and find the lower view point; c) If attempting a more formal picture of say a party-goer, take care where their hands are placed - sometimes they can look completely divorced from their owner!

These are just a few thoughts on which to reflect - but at the end of the day you can’t beat a bit of frantic flag-waving, nor the ‘grab-shot’ of spontaneous delight - enjoy!

Meanwhile, no restraints were imposed on the continuing search for the source of Nettleham Beck and it was with sadness of heart that the explorers finally had to depart from the welcoming historic parish of Nettleham. Fearlessly crossing the parish border, before ultimately emerging into neighbouring Riseholme parish, their conjecture converted to fact on seeing the word Beck Cottage we were on the right track!

The intention was to proceed without further delay on to the source - but so beguiling did our cameraman find the magnificent Riseholme Hall, that he couldn’t be shifted!

Here’s hoping he’s moved on before the next edition of Nettleham News!

So we seem to have deluded these creatures Encouraged them to feel welcome and safe But how could we know that others would abuse this?

The Green Thing Whilst checking out at the supermarket till, the young cashier suggested to the elderly woman that she should bring her own shopping bags, because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

The woman apologised and explained: “We didn’t have this green thing back in my earlier days.”

The cashier responded: “That’s just the problem, your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.”

She was right - our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk, pop and beer bottles and they were sent back to the plant to be washed, sterilised and refilled, so the same bottles were used over and over again - they really were recycled.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen every time, and we replaced razor blades when they became dull instead of throwing away the whole ‘disposable’ razor.

But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator or lift in every shop and office building. We walked to the grocery shop and didn’t climb into a car every time we wanted to go a short distance.

But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed babies’ nappies because we didn’t have the disposable kind. We dried clothes on a washing line, not in an energy-gobbling machine wind and solar power really did dry our clothes. Kids got hand-me-downs from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that young lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one television or radio in the house, not one in every room. And

the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?).

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand, because we didn’t have electric gadgets to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we scrunched old newspapers to cushion the item, not styrofoam beads or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn’t burn petrol or electricity to cut the lawn - we used a push mower that ran on human power.

We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right. We didn’t have the green thing back then.

We drank water from a drinking fountain or a tap when we were thirsty instead of a plastic bottle flown in from another country. We accepted that a lot of food was seasonal and didn’t expect it to be flown thousands of air miles around the world. We actually cooked food that didn’t come out of a packet, tin or plastic wrap and we could even grow and wash our own vegetables and chop our own salad.

But then we didn’t have the green thing back in those days.

Back then, people took the tram or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of using their mothers as a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not a bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerised gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites miles out in space to find the nearest takeaway.

But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

Remember: Don’t make old people mad!

We don’t much like being old in the first place, so it doesn’t take much to p**s us off!

Hedge and Small Woodland Grants Readers may be interested to know that Lincolnshire County Council offer a Hedge and Small Woodland Grant with a 50% contribution towards the cost of trees and rabbit protection used to plant new hedges and small areas of woodland.

The grant is available to farmers and small landowners, but not for domestic gardens.

During the winter of 2011, 12.5km of new hedge and 1 hectare of new woodland was planted using this grant.

We are able to provide a free advisory visit to all applicants to help formulate planting designs and work out the number and varieties of trees required.

The Bookworm’s Delight To settle down in a comfortable armchair with a good book, is one of life’s great pleasures. As you turn the pages and join the character on their adventures, an hour can pass you by without any effort. Much can be learned from reading books, not to mention improving your spelling and punctuation.

Each book has a character of its own, with a colourful cover and short introduction on the inside, to give you an idea what the story will be about. They come in all shapes and sizes, my bookcase is crammed with different titles. I have books dating back to my childhood, with battered brown pages, and of great sentimental value.

I can remember tucking a book into my school satchel to read at dinner time.

Friends and family often give me books that they no longer need, which I put by to read later.

I received a Kindle reader as a present.

Lightweight, with a clear screen, this is a superb piece of technology. The font size can be increased, which is a bonus as I am short-sighted. If you create an account with an online book store, and choose a title, with one click of the mouse, the book arrives on your Kindle reader, and you can settle down to enjoy the story.

Recently I was reading a book on my Kindle, and the orange light flashed warning of low battery. I had to switch off and recharge the battery for an hour, and I lost the gist of my story.

I found myself comparing a Kindle reader to a real book. I can tuck a book-mark between the real pages, and have a large collection of titles on my bookshelf. A new paperback book today would cost around £8, whereas you can find the same title in a charity shop for £2 and in good condition.

Our local Heart Foundation charity shop, dedicates a large area at the rear of the store for books, set out in alphabetical order of authors, all in good condition.

With our excellent library service and good second-hand books in the charity shops, at least some of us on a low income can continue to read a book and not hanker for expensive new gadgets.

FUNDRAISING FOR SIGHT SAVERS Thank you all so much for your generous response to the EGGSTRA SPECIAL COFFEE MORNING, sales of Easter chicks and bunnies, and donations in so many ways in aid of Sight Savers.

The glorious sunshine we had enjoyed early in March had deserted us by the time we held the Eggstra Special Coffee Morning on the 31st. However, before that date Angela at the ‘The Tea Cosy’ had generously provided a voucher as the prize for the ‘Guess the Lucky Plate’ competition which is always so popular. Thank you for that Angie.

Then the ladies of the Threshold Group, who always hold a Coffee Morning on the last Saturday of the month, kindly suggested that Sight Savers would benefit from their Coffee Morning held on the same day. That resulted in a fantastic donation of £60.00. Thank you so much ladies.

The Eggstra Special Coffee Morning was great fun, although there was plenty of room for more of you to come. However, knowing that both Coffee Mornings were in aid of Sight Savers, it was a great boost when folk made their way between the two events. Thank you to all who sent raffle prizes and gifts for the cake stall we know you have all received our thanks.

The knitted chicks and bunnies from Doris Colman were so popular and thank you Doris for all your help. By the end of the morning, including the generous donation from Threshold, we had raised over £200.00. A special thank you to all ladies and a very special gent who ran the stalls.

It’s a Small World!

Glynis had kindly agreed that chicks and bunnies could be on sale once again at the salon and this meant a fantastic £50.86 was handed over for Sight Savers. A very big thank you Glynis to you, your staff and customers for such generosity.

Pauline also sold chicks, bunnies and knitted toys at her salon in Lincoln again and the grand sum of £51.50 was raised for Sight Savers. Thank you Pauline and please pass on our thanks to your customers for their support.

Win Rollin then sold more chicks and bunnies in Dunholme and all these raised more precious pennies. Thank you for your help Win. Donations continued to be received you all know in which way you supported our efforts. On behalf of all those folk who will now be protected from river blindness (just 30p per family per year) or those who can now receive a sight-restoring cataract operation (cost £17.00), I can only say a most sincere THANK YOU for the £500 I have been able to send to Sight Savers.

It’s so wonderful to be even a small part of such generosity.

To continue our fundraising we will be having a stall at Nettleham Cares on Saturday 20 October in the Village Hall.

On a recent holiday cruise, going all the way around Australia, before each port of call, the destination lecturer on board gave a talk on the next port we would visit (eg Sydney, Darwin, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, etc) including the history of the settlement and what sights we should look out for as we explored the area.

He said in passing that he was from the ‘Lincoln’ area of England and when I spoke to Commander Frank Feest BSc RN I discovered that he had lived in Nettleham for over 20 years!

He said that this would perhaps explain his occasional absence to his neighbours!

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. She laid her pet on the table and the vet took his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, “I’m sorry, but your duck, Cuddles, has passed away.”

The distressed woman wailed, “Are you sure?”

FUNDRAISING FOR LINK ROMANIA Thank you all for your support of the Link Romania Coffee Morning held at Church View on 2 March which raised £261.00.

Of course our thanks must go in the first instance to the Scheme Manager for allowing us the use of the lounge and to all those kind souls who ‘manned’ the stalls and made us delicious tea and coffee.

It was a grand morning of fun and fellowship and a most sincere thank you to all who brought or sent cakes, gifts, raffle prizes and knitted toys. It was so generous of you all.

Since the Coffee Morning, the ‘Thank You’ poster has now been received once again saying “A big thank you to Nettleham Friends of Link Romania for helping us to deliver Christmas Shoeboxes to some of the poorest people in Eastern Europe 41,877 family and elderly shoeboxes”.

Isn’t that a wonderful total! Apparently Link Romania has now realised that many folk live alone these days and appealed in

the Worthing area for shoeboxes for the elderly. It was so successful that this year they are issuing two leaflets - one for the usual family shoeboxes and the other for boxes for the elderly. We hope to have a selection of both leaflets to enable you to choose the kind of box you wish to send.

Thank you again for the wonderful response to the 2011 Shoebox Appeal.

We know that many of you are busily knitting and buying for shoeboxes, indeed we have already received more than 100 hats of all sizes - each one so very precious. Knitted squares for blankets, jumpers, etc, are also in the process of being made. Wonderful - thank you.

We hope to launch the 2012 Shoebox Appeal in September as usual. No details to hand at the moment, but please look out for posters later in the year.

“Yes, I’m quite sure. Your duck is dead,” replied the vet.

“How can you be sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing or anything on him.”

The vet left the room and returned with a black Labrador Retriever. The dog sniffed the duck from top to bottom, then looked up at the vet and shook its head.

The vet then wentout again and returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot and shook its head.

The vet looked at the woman and said, “Look, I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely a 100% certifiably dead duck.”

The vet then turned to his computer, tapped a few keys and produced a bill, which he presented to the woman. Still in shock, she took the bill. “£100!” she cried, “£100 just to tell me my duck is dead!”

The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been £30, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now £100."

‘Lincoln Water 100’ helps Madagascan poor Money raised at celebrations of Lincoln’s Water Centenary last October will enable 1,700 people in Madagascar to get piped drinking water for the first time. £10,000 was raised for the charity Water Aid as Lincoln marked 100 years of continuous safe water supplies from the boreholes at Elkesley, Nottinghamshire.

Now the ‘Lincoln Water 100’ committee, representing organisers The Rotary Club of Lincoln and Anglian Water, are taking steps to multiply the total by 350% through the international Rotary Foundation. Total funding of around £35,000 will enable Water Aid to install two gravity-flow water systems, fed by hill springs, to supply tap points in two rural communities of Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest countries.

1,700 people, including 150 students, in the Analamanga region will get their first access to clean piped water and 900 people will benefit from newly-built latrines. The tripled Lincoln donation will also result in the training of six technicians and hygiene education initiatives for villagers and schools.

Barry Dean, chairman of the ‘Lincoln Water 100’ committee, said: ”Our forefathers in Lincoln suffered from unsafe water in the devastating typhoid epidemic of 1905 which led directly to the creation of the Elkesley supply.

Water Aid, who have been working in Madagascar since 1999, said: ”The blend of community engagement and construction work has been successful and is contributing to the targets set locally to help Madagascar achieve the Millennium Development goals.”

First they dug a hole at Elkesley, More than twenty miles from Lincoln.

Down the hole they sent a beer can, Tied with many a yard of blind cord, And it came back full of water.

Then the borough engineer, Mr Neil Mc Kechnie Barron Yelled “Eureka I have found it!

This is really Laughing Water; Come and have a drink you Johnnies.”

After many years of labour, Through a pipe they brought the water Unto Lincoln’s gates they brought it, And they made great jubilation.

First they went by car to Elkesley, Fifty motors went like billy-ho!

And they saw the great big engines, Heard the grunting of the pistons, Heard the sobbing of the slide valves,

Heard the quarrel of th’ eccentrics, Grumbling at the work before them, Doomed to everlasting labour, Ever pumping Lincoln’s water, All along the road to Lincoln.

Then the merry people wandered To the tent where tea was serving, (And some got some and some didn’t, Those that didn’t went without it).

Then the Mayoress took a bottle Full of champagne bright and bubbly, Threw it at the upright stanchion, Busted it right well and truly, And the people said “How wasteful!

Ten-and-sixpence gone to blazes!”

After that we all went homeward, Waiting anxious for the ‘morrow When we were to have a blow-out.

(Rather coarse expression, I think, But it seems to fit in nicely.)

In the morning to the Minster Marched in order Lincoln’s townsmen, Mayor, and Clerk, and City magnates, Men and maidens, boys and women, Thanks to give for this great blessing.

Later, in the Arboretum After many lengthy speeches, More or less unnecessary, Councillor Newsum, Mayor of Lincoln,

Turned the magic water stop-cock, And the fountain sent a jet up And maroons were fired immediately, And the Church bells rang their hardest, And the people cheered their loudest, And the rain came down in torrents.

And the Lincoln Corporation Made its very longest speeches, While the people stood and listened While their collars all went sloppy, While my feet got cold as mutton And I think I’ve got pneumonia, For I stood for quite two hours In the very finest mud pool That I think I’ve ever stood in.

Still they talked, and still the rain rained, For I think the clouds were jealous, Jealous of that mighty fountain, And they did their best to beat it.

I went home a sloppy scarecrow, Someone put me through the mangle, And I came out right as ninepence.

But my hat was good as ruined (Four and sixpence in the High-street!)

I could write like this for hours, But I will have mercy on you, And if you’re not tired, I am!
